We continue our study of the Letter to the Hebrews, with the first two paragraphs of the Body section of Chapter 1.2.
If you have been reading these studies since the beginning, you may skip down to the next section to save time. But if you are new to these studies, please continue.
The Letter to the Hebrews was written to a special group of Jews during the time after the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ (30 A.D) until the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D., a span of 40 years.
These Jews had been saved under the Old Covenant through their faith in the coming Messiah and the offering of the required sacrifices for their sins in the Temple in Jerusalem, using the services of the high priests of Aaron.
Before the cross of Christ, a Jew could become a child of God through faith, and have the assurance of Eternal Life using the required animal sacrifices through the priesthood of Aaron and his sons. The Way of Salvation under the Old Covenant was through faith in Jehovah and his coming Messiah through the animal sacrifices in the Temple in Jerusalem.
But, after Christ atoned for all sins on the cross through his Finished Work, never to be repeated, many of these Old Covenant Jews had a big problem: They had no way to connect with Jehovah their God spiritually, because the animal sacrifices were no longer acceptable to Jehovah; but at the same time, they did not yet believe in Jesus as their Messiah!
This was the entire purpose of this letter to the Hebrews: bring these children of God under the Old Covenant to faith in their Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ. And at the same time, to warn them that the judgment of God was certain if they refused to repent of their animal sacrifices in the Temple and turn to Christ, once and for all time.
There was a time limit of 40 years for these Jews:
Hebrews 3:7-11: “Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you will hear his voice: harden not your hearts, as in the rebellion, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: when your fathers tested me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. Therefore, I was grieved with that generation; and I said, ‘They always go astray in their heart; and they have not known my ways.’ So I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall not enter into my rest.’”
Just as the children of Israel did not believe the promises of God about the land of Canaan and decided to go back to Egypt, and they were condemned to wander for 40 years in the desert until they died: so these Jews also had 40 years: from 30 A.D. when Jesus atoned for all sins on the cross and rose from the dead, until 70 A.D., when the Roman army finally came and destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple, which resulted in the deaths of over 1 million Jews.
So in Hebrews, we are reading a letter whose audience has already died, and does not apply to us today; however, the letter is rich in spiritual truth for both Jews and Gentiles and wonderful lessons that we can apply to ourselves today.
This is NOT the message of the letter to the Romans, which is all about salvation (for both Jews and Gentiles today) under the New Covenant: “from saving faith to mature faith...” Romans 1:17.
I’m going to keep repeating this in every lesson of Hebrews, because the Bible study is reaching many new people who missed the earlier studies; and it is very helpful as well to remind us of the context of what we are reading.
Now, let’s take a closer look at Chapter 1.2 with the first two paragraphs of the Body section.
§Complement Body: Melchizedek received tithes from Abraham and Levi, so his Priesthood was superior to the priesthood of Aaron (5:11 - 7:17)
¶Opposite These Jews were immature believers who needed to move from animal sacrifices to the Finished Work of Christ (5:11 - 6:8)
¶Opposite The unconditional oath of God to Abraham gives us strong consolation to us, who have fled for refuge to Christ (6:9 - 20)
¶Complement Melchizedek was the priest of the most High God: the king of righteousness, and the king of peace (7:1 - 3)
¶Complement Melchizedek was so great that even Abraham paid tithes to him, and Levi implicitly did also (7:4 - 10)
¶Unique The Law of Moses has been changed to transfer the office of the High Priesthood from Aaron to Jesus Christ (7:11 - 17)
Comments: Remember how the Golden Ratio design of one unique, two complements, and two opposites (UCC-OO) works (or, the reverse, which is OO-CCU):
In this case, the Golden Ratio design of the paragraphs in the Body section is OO-CCU (two opposites, two complements, and one unique). The first two paragraphs have themes that oppose each other, and they are a sub-group to themselves; the next three paragraphs have the design of two complements and one unique; and they are a sub-group to themselves.
In this sub-group (the first two paragraphs), the themes are about the spiritual immaturity of these Jews who had been saved under the Old Covenant. They needed to grow up spiritually and move from animal sacrifices under the Old Covenant to the Finished Work of Christ under the New Covenant.

For every one that uses milk is unskilled in the Word of righteousness, because he is a spiritual baby; but solid food belongs to them that are spiritually mature, even those who by reason of habitual use have trained their senses to discern both good and evil.
Complement Therefore, leaving the basics of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on to completeness in the New Covenant: not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward [Jehovah] God; of the doctrine of washings, and of laying of hands on the animal sacrifice, and of resurrection of the dead, and of Eternal Judgment. And we will do this, if God permits.
Complement Because it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit; and have tasted the good Word of God, and the powers of the world to come: if they shall fall away, to renew them again to repentance: seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
Opposite For the earth which drinks in the rain that comes often upon it, and brings forth herbs useful for them by whom it is dressed, receives blessing from God;
Opposite but that which bears thorns and briers is rejected, and near to cursing, whose end is to be burned.
Comments:
Hebrews 5:11-14: “Of whom we have many things to say; but hard to explain, seeing you are hard of hearing. For when for the time you should be teachers, you need someone to teach you again which are the first principles of the Oracles of God. And you have become those that need milk, and not solid food. 1 Peter 2:1-2: “Therefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisy, and envy, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the Word, that you may grow thereby.”
1 Corinthians 3:1-3: “And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual believers, but as to carnal, even as to infants in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with solid food: for until now you were not able to bear it; neither yet now are you able: for you are still carnal.”
Could it be any more clear who the Apostle Paul was addressing in this letter? He was writing to Jews who were the children of God already, not lost people! Lost people cannot grow spiritually; lost people do not need “milk”: they need the Gospel of Jesus Christ to be saved first! But the Gospel is not the message here; instead, the message of Hebrews is for these Jews to grow in their faith and believe on Christ as their Messiah; and stop going to the Temple in Jerusalem to offer animal sacrifices, because that way to God [the Old Covenant] was closed when Christ died on the cross and atoned for all of our sins. That is the message.
Hebrews 6:1-3: “Therefore, leaving the basics of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on to completeness [in the New Covenant]: not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward [Jehovah] God; of the doctrine of washings, and of laying of hands [on the animal sacrifice], and of resurrection of the dead, and of Eternal Judgment. And we will do this, if God permits.”
In this text, these are references to the rituals of offering animal sacrifices in the Temple; of which, Paul urges these Jews of the first century to put behind them and go on to completeness in the New Covenant in Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 6:4-6: “Because it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit; and have tasted the good Word of God, and the powers of the world to come: if they shall fall away, to renew them again to repentance: seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.”
This is one place where the correct interpretation of Hebrews (see the first paragraph of this study and previous studies) is extremely helpful. If you are like most Christians, you have heard preaching that quotes Hebrews 6:4-6 and then it is applied to a lost person who hears the Gospel, but they reject it to the extent that they can no longer be saved, because God has rejected them utterly and finally to their own sins.
And actually, this application of the text is correct! But, it is not the correct INTERPRETATION. You see, there is only one interpretation which is correct for any given Scripture; but there are many applications that can be made.
The correct interpretation is to these Old Covenant Jews who were already saved(!); they were children of God already; however, they were immature in their faith and needed to move from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant in Christ, as I explained already.
The point that the Apostle Paul was making to these Jews was a warning: If you continue to reject Jesus Christ as your Messiah (“crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh”), then instead of the Holy Spirit continuing to draw you, you will become hardened against the truth and against the Holy Spirit to the point that God will no longer speak to you, so that you cannot come back to God in this life.
Hebrews 12:5-13: “And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to children, “My son, despise not the discipline of [Jehovah], nor faint when you are rebuked by him: for whom [Jehovah] loves he disciplines, and scourges every son whom he receives.”
If you endure discipline, God deals with you as with sons: for what son is he whom the father does not discipline? But if you are without discipline, whereof all are partakers, then you are illegitimate, and not truly sons of God.
Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence. Shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live? For they truly disciplined us for a few days after their own pleasure; but he for our spiritual good, that we might be partakers of his holiness.
Now, no discipline seems to be joyful for the moment, but painful; yet afterward, it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who experience it. Therefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; and make straight paths for your feet, so that the lame part cannot be dislocated; but rather can be healed.”
God the Holy Spirit was applying “the board of education to the seat of understanding” to these Jews to bring them to complete their faith in Jesus Christ their Messiah! But many of them were not listening, and they perished in the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D.
Hebrews 6:7-8: “For the earth which drinks in the rain that comes often upon it, and brings forth herbs useful for them by whom it is dressed, receives blessing from God; but that which bears thorns and briers is rejected, and near to cursing, whose end is to be burned.”
For a person who is saved and knows Jesus Christ as their Savior: can they become so hardened to the Word of God that God destroys them, even though they will go to Heaven when they die? The answer is absolutely yes!
We see at least two national examples in Scripture, and I will cite one personal example, although there are many more in the Bible:
1) The Jews became so addicted to idolatry that God sent the army of Nebuchadnezzar to Israel in 587 B.C.; and he completely destroyed the city and the Temple of Solomon and slew a large number of Jews.
2) God sent the army of Rome to Israel in 70 A.D.; and he completely destroyed the city and the Temple of Herod; and slew over a million Jews.
3) Solomon the son of David, king of Israel, became a rebel against God late in life; and God judged him and the nation of Israel by dividing it into two kingdoms, so that his sons lost control of most of the nation. On top of that, the sins of Solomon led to the destruction of everything that he had built: the Temple in Jerusalem, and the worship of Jehovah God in Israel, for a time.
I am sure that Solomon is in Heaven today; but I am also sure that if he could speak to you right now, he would beg you to be faithful to the Lord Jesus Christ forever, because there is a very heavy price to pay for refusing to follow Christ.
1 Corinthians 3:16-17: “Do you not know that all of you are a Temple of God, and the Spirit of God dwells in you? If any man defiles the Temple of God, him shall God destroy: for the Temple of God is holy, which Temple all of you are.”
Finally, someone might say,
"Isn't it true that a believer can always come back to his heavenly Father at any time? After all, God is his Father, and the believer is his child. For proof, look at Luke 15:11-32 with the Prodigal son parable."
I believe that that is true: a believer today potentially can return to his heavenly Father at any time, no matter how much he/she may have sinned against their Savior. However, that case is different than the case in this text, because while these Jews were believers, they were in a special situation with a time limit to obey.
Believers today have no time limit in Scripture to return to the Lord or be destroyed. God may patiently wait a lifetime or He may not. There are probably many situations where God did something different depending on the circumstances.
In any case, I would not tempt the Lord by testing his love and patience! You would be a fool if you tried. Amen.

Opposite But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we say this: for God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, which you have shown toward his Name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and are ministering now. And we desire that every one of you shows the same diligence, to the full assurance of hope unto the goal; that you be not lazy, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
Opposite For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he swore by himself, saying, “Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.” And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
--Complement For men truly swear by the greater; and an oath for confirmation is for them an end of all dispute.
Complement Therefore God, willing more abundantly to show to the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath; that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us.
Unique Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast; and which enters into that within the veil; where the forerunner has already entered for us, that is, Jesus, having become a High Priest into the Ages according to the order of Melchizedek.
Hebrews 6:11-12: “And we desire that every one of you shows the same diligence, to the full assurance of hope unto the goal; that you be not lazy, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.”
Who should these Jews of the first century follow so that they might inherit the promises? Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses and all the prophets mentioned in Chapter 1.4 of this letter (traditional references: 10:32 - 11:40).
The Apostle Paul was not talking about being saved or becoming a Christian: he was talking about inheriting the promises given to Abraham, which includes Eternal Life and a glorious future with Jehovah their God. These Jews were ALREADY saved! They only had to embrace the Lord Jesus Christ and the Finished Work that He provided on Calvary and put the Old Covenant behind them forever.
This is similar in a way to a Christian today: if you are saved, then you cannot work for your salvation, because you are already saved, and you will immediately go to Heaven when you die. The only question then is what kind of reward will you receive when you get there? Will it be wood, hay, and stubble that will immediately burn up and leave you with nothing in Heaven? Or will your reward be gold, silver, and precious stones that will endure the fire of God’s Judgment?
I Corinthians 3:12-15: “And if any man builds upon this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or stubble: every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the Day of Judgment shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire. And the fire shall test every man’s work of what sort it is: if any man’s work remains which he has built on it, he shall receive a reward; if any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved, yet so as by fire.”
This is not “Purgatory”! There is no such place as Purgatory; it was invented by the popes as a way to raise money for themselves through a lie; it is a scam on poor Roman Catholics!
Hebrews 6:17-20: “Therefore God, willing more abundantly to show to the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath; that by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us. Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast; and which enters into that within the veil; where the forerunner has already entered for us, that is, Jesus, having become a High Priest into the Ages according to the order of Melchizedek.”
I wonder, my friend: Have you fled for refuge to Jesus Christ to be saved?
You might say, “Why should I run to Jesus Christ for refuge? Refuge from what?” I will tell you: We need refuge from the wrath of God for our sins!
I often read social media; and I see many who claim that God is only “a sky wizard” or a fantasy of some kind who is not real.
My friend: you can deny that God exists; and you can claim that the Bible is only myths and legends, but that will not change the reality that the God of the Bible created all things: both the Universe and you and I. You are only fooling yourself; but you are not fooling God, and you cannot change reality with your denials of the truth!
We walk on God’s ground; we breathe God’s air; and we are alive, only because God has given us breath and life!
And more importantly, you and I will one day face our Creator, the Lord Jesus Christ as our Judge! The question is not IF it will happen, but WHEN; because we are mortal and cannot live forever in this flesh.
So the question is: Are you ready to meet the Lord Jesus Christ as your Judge? If you have been born again through repentance and faith in the Finished Work of Christ, then you will meet Jesus as your Judge at the Judgment Seat of Christ, who will judge your works and give you a reward based on those works (I Corinthians 3:12-15).
But if you are not born again when your body dies, then you will meet the Lord Jesus Christ as your Judge of your sins, who will then send you into the Lake of Fire to receive a punishment for eternity that is appropriate for your sins.
Why would you want to meet Jesus as the Judge of your sins?? Why? Repent of your sins and trust in Christ TODAY, so that you will be saved and inherit Eternal Life instead of Eternal Damnation!
2 Corinthians 6:2b: “Behold, now is the accepted time! Behold, now is the day of salvation!”
Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, who died for your sins on the cross almost 2,000 years ago and rose again from the dead, according to the Scriptures?
If so, then it is easy to be saved, if you are willing to admit that you are a sinner before God, and if you want to receive Jesus Christ as your personal Savior.
Here is a prayer that you can use to be saved:
“Lord Jesus, I know that I have sinned against YOU. I am no good, and you are righteous! You are my only hope for salvation! I believe that you died on the cross for my sins, you were buried, and you rose again from the dead on the third day. I want you to come into my life and be my Lord and Savior. Please come into my heart right now. Forgive me for all my sins, and save my soul. In the mighty Name of Jesus, I pray, Amen!”

Estos judíos habían sido salvados bajos el Antiguo Pacto a través de su fe en el Mesías venidero y la ofrenda de los sacrificios requeridos por sus pecados en el Templo de Jerusalén, utilizando los servicios de los sumos sacerdotes de Aarón.
Ante la cruz de Cristo, un judío podía convertirse en hijo de Dios a través de la fe y tener la seguridad de la Vida Eterna usando los sacrificios de animales requeridos a través del sacerdocio de Aarón y sus hijos. El Camino de la Salvación baja el Antiguo Pacto era a través de la fe en Jehová y su Mesías venidero a través de los sacrificios de animales en el Templo de Jerusalén.
Pero, después de que Cristo expió todos los pecados en la cruz a través de su Obra Terminada, nunca para ser repetido, muchos de estos judíos del Antiguo Pacto tenían un gran problema: No tenían manera de conectarse espiritualmente con Jehová su Dios, porque sus sacrificios de animales ya no eran aceptables para Jehová; pero al mismo tiempo, ¡todavía no creían en Jesús como su Mesías!
Este fue todo el propósito de esta carta a los Hebreos: llevar a estos hijos de Dios bajo el Antiguo Pacto a la fe en su Mesías, el Señor Jesucristo. Y al mismo tiempo, advertirles que el juicio de Dios era seguro si rehusaban arrepentirse de sus sacrificios de animales en el Templo y volverse a Cristo, de una vez por todas.
Había un límite de tiempo de 40 años para estos judíos:
Hebreos 3:7-11: “Por lo tanto, como dice el Espíritu Santo, “Hoy, si oyereis su voz: no endurezcáis vuestros corazones, como en la rebelión, en el día de la tentación en el desierto, donde vuestros padres me pusieron a prueba, me probaron y vieron mis obras cuarenta años. Por lo tanto, yo estaba afligido con esa generación, y dije, ‘Ellos siempre se extravían en su corazón, y no han conocido mis caminos.’ Así que juré en mi ira, ‘No entrarán en mi reposo.’”
Así como los hijos de Israel no creyeron en las promesas de Dios acerca de la tierra de Canaán y decidieron regresar a Egipto, y fueron condenados a vagar cuarenta años en el desierto hasta que murieran: así que estos judíos también tenían 40 años: desde el 30 d.C. cuando Jesús expió todos los pecados en la cruz y resucitó de entre los muertos, hasta el 70 d.C., cuando el ejército romano finalmente llegó y destruyó Jerusalén y el Templo, lo que resultó en la muerte de más de 1 millón de judíos.
Entonces, en Hebreos, estamos leyendo una carta cuya audiencia ya murió, y no se aplica a nosotros hoy; sin embargo, la carta es rica en verdad espiritual tanto para judíos como para gentiles y lecciones maravillosas que podemos aplicarnos a nosotros mismos hoy.
Este NO es el mensaje de la carta a los Romanos, que trata sobre la salvación (tanto para los judíos como para los gentiles hoy) bajo el Nuevo Pacto: “de la fe salvadora a la fe madura...” Romanos 1:17.
Voy a seguir repitiendo esto en cada lección de Hebreos, porque el estudio de la Biblia está llegando a muchas personas nuevas que se perdieron los estudios anteriores; y también es muy útil para recordarnos el contexto de lo que estamos leyendo.
§El complemento Cuerpo: Melquisedec recibió los diezmos de Abraham y Leví, por lo que su sacerdocio era superior al de Aarón (5:11 - 7:17)

Recuerde cómo funciona el diseño de la proporción áurea de uno único, dos complementarios y dos opuestos (UCC-OO) (o, al revés, cual es OO-CCU):
En este caso, el diseño de la Proporción Áurea de los párrafos en la sección Cuerpo es OO-CCU (dos opuestos, dos complementarios y uno único). Los primeros dos párrafos tienen temas que se oponen entre sí, y ellos son un subgrupo en sí mismos; los tres párrafos siguientes tienen el diseño de dos complementarios y uno único; y ellos son un subgrupo a sí mismos.
En este subgrupo (los dos primeros párrafos), los temas son sobre la inmadurez espiritual de estos judíos que habían sido salvados bajos el Antiguo Pacto. Necesitaban crecer espiritualmente y pasar de los sacrificios de animales bajos el Antiguo Pacto a la Obra Terminada de Cristo bajo el Nuevo Pacto.

El complemento Por tanto, dejando los basicos de la doctrina de Cristo, déjanos ir adelante a la completitud en el Nuevo Convenio; no otra vez estableciendo el fundamento del arrepentimiento desde obras muertas, y de la fe en [Jehová] Dios, de la doctrina de lavados, y de la imposición de manos sobre el sacrificio de animal, y de la resurrección de los muertos, y del Juicio Eterno. Y haremos esto, si Dios lo permite.
El complemento Porque es imposible para aquellos quien una vez fueron iluminados, y han probado el don celestial, y han sido hechos partícipes del Espíritu Santo; y han probado la buena Palabra de Dios y los poderes del mundo venidero: si ellos caerán lejos, para renovarlos nuevamente al arrepentimiento: viendo que crucifican el Hijo de Dios a sí mismos de nuevo, y le ponen a una vergüenza abierta.
Lo opuesto Porque la tierra que bebe en la lluvia que viene a menudo sobre ella, y produce hierbas útiles para aquellos por quienes está vestida, recibe la bendición de Dios;
Lo opuesto pero lo que lleva espinas y zarzas es rechazado, y cercano a maldiciendo, cuyo fin es ser quemado.
Comentarios:

1 Pedro 2:1-2: “Desechando, pues, toda malicia, y todo engaño, e hipocresía, y envidia, y toda maledicencia, como niños recién nacidos, buscad a la leche pura de la Palabra, así que podrías crecer por ello.”
1 Corinthians 3:1-3: “Y yo, hermanos, no pude hablaros como a creyentes espirituales, sino como a carnales, incluso como a infantes en Cristo. Os di a beber leche, y no carne: porque aún no podíais digerirla, ni aún ahora podéis: porque aún sois carnales.”
¿Podría ser más claro a quién se dirigía el apóstol Pablo en esta carta? ¡Estaba escribiendo a judíos que ya eran hijos de Dios, no a personas perdidas! Las personas perdidas no pueden crecer espiritualmente; los perdidos no necesitan “leche”: ¡necesitan primero el Evangelio de Jesucristo para ser salvados!
Pero el Evangelio no es el mensaje aquí; en cambio, el mensaje de Hebreos es que estos judíos crezcan en su fe y crean en Cristo como su Mesías; y dejar de ir al Templo de Jerusalén a ofrecer sacrificios de animales, porque ese camino a Dios [el Antiguo Pacto] quedó cerrado cuando Cristo murió en la cruz y expió todos nuestros pecados. Ese es el mensaje.
Hebreos 6:1-3: “Por tanto, dejando los basicos de la doctrina de Cristo, déjanos ir adelante a la completitud en el Nuevo Convenio; no otra vez estableciendo el fundamento del arrepentimiento desde obras muertas, y de la fe en [Jehová] Dios, de la doctrina de lavados, y de la imposición de manos sobre el sacrificio de animal, y de la resurrección de los muertos, y del Juicio Eterno. Y haremos esto, si Dios lo permite.”
En este texto, estas son referencias a los rituales de ofrecer sacrificios de animales en el Templo; de los cuales, Pablo instó a estos judíos del primer siglo a dejarlos atrás y avanzar a la finalización en el Nuevo Pacto en Jesucristo.
Hebreos 6:4-6: “Porque es imposible para aquellos quien una vez fueron iluminados, y han probado el don celestial, y han sido hechos partícipes del Espíritu Santo; y han probado la buena Palabra de Dios y los poderes del mundo venidero: si ellos caerán lejos, para renovarlos nuevamente al arrepentimiento: viendo que crucifican el Hijo de Dios a sí mismos de nuevo, y le ponen a una vergüenza abierta.”
Este es un lugar donde la interpretación correcta de Hebreos (ver el primer párrafo de este estudio y estudios previos) es extremadamente útil. Si usted es como la mayoría de los cristianos, ha escuchado predicaciones que citan Hebreos 6:4-6 y luego lo ellos aplican a una persona perdida que escucha el Evangelio, pero lo rechazan en la medida que ya no pueden ser salvados, porque Dios los ha rechazado total y finalmente a sus propios pecados.
¡Y de hecho, esta aplicación del texto es correcta! Pero, no es la INTERPRETACIÓN correcta. Verá, solo hay una interpretación que es correcta para cualquier Escritura dada; pero son muchas las aplicaciones que se pueden hacer.
La interpretación correcta es para estos judíos del Antiguo Pacto que ya eran salvados (!); ya eran hijos de Dios; sin embargo, eran inmaduros en su fe y necesitaban pasar del Antiguo Pacto al Nuevo Pacto en Cristo, como ya expliqué.
El punto que el Apóstol Pablo les estaba dando a estos judíos era una advertencia: Si continúa rechazando a Jesucristo como su Mesías (“crucifican el Hijo de Dios a sí mismos de nuevo”), entonces en lugar de que el Espíritu Santo continúe atrayéndote a Cristo, tú endurecerás contra la verdad y contra el Espíritu Santo al punto que Dios ya no te hablará más, para que no puedas volver a Dios en esta vida.
Hebreos 12:5-13: “Y ustedes ha olvidado la exhortación que habla a ustedes como a niños: “Hijo mío, no desprecies la disciplina de [Jehová], ni desmayes cuando seas reprendido por él: porque quien [Jehová] ama, él disciplina; y él azota a todo hijo que recibe.”
Si soportáis el castigo, Dios os trata como con hijos: porque ¿qué hijo es aquel a quien el padre no castiga? Pero si estáis sin castigo, del cual todos son hechos partícipes, entonces ustedes son ilegítimos, y no sois verdaderamente hijos de Dios.
Además, hemos tenido padres de nuestra carne que nos corrigieron; y les dimos reverencia. ¿No deberíamos, más bien, estar sujetos al Padre de los espíritus y vivir? Porque, verdaderamente, nos disciplinaron durante unos días después de su propio placer; pero él por nuestro bien espiritual, para que podamos ser partícipes de su santidad.
Ahora, ninguna disciplina parece ser gozosa por el momento, sino dolorosa; aún después, da fruto apacible de justicia a los que lo experimentan. Por lo tanto, levantad las manos que cuelgan bajo, y las rodillas débiles; y haced caminos rectos para vuestros pies, a fin de que la parte coja no se puede dislocar, sino que más bien puede ser sanado.””
¡Dios el Espíritu Santo estaba aplicando “la tabla de educación al asiento del entendimiento” a estos judíos para llevarlos a completar su fe en Jesucristo su Mesías! Pero muchos de ellos no estaban escuchando y ellos perecieron en la destrucción de Jerusalén en el año 70 d.C.
Hebreos 6:7-8: “Porque la tierra que bebe en la lluvia que viene a menudo sobre ella, y produce hierbas útiles para aquellos por quienes está vestida, recibe la bendición de Dios; pero lo que lleva espinas y zarzas es rechazado, y cercano a maldiciendo, cuyo fin es ser quemado.”
Para una persona que es salvada y conoce a Jesucristo como su Salvador: ¿pueden endurecerse tanto a la Palabra de Dios que Dios los destruya, aunque vayan al Cielo cuando mueran? ¡La respuesta es absolutamente sí!
Vemos al menos dos ejemplos nacionales en las Escrituras, y citaré un ejemplo personal, aunque hay muchos más en la Biblia:
1) Los judíos se volvieron tan adictos a la idolatría que Dios envió el ejército de Nabucodonosor a Israel en el año 587 a.C.; y destruyó por completo la ciudad y el Templo de Salomón y mató a un gran número de judíos.
2) Dios envió el ejército de Roma a Israel en el año 70 d.C.; y destruyó por completo la ciudad y el Templo de Herodes; y asesinó a más de un millón de judíos.
3) Salomón, hijo de David, rey de Israel, se rebeló contra Dios a una edad avanzada; y Dios lo juzgó a él ya la nación de Israel dividiéndola en dos reinos, de modo que sus hijos perdieron el control de la mayor parte de la nación. Además de eso, los pecados de Salomón llevaron a la destrucción de todo lo que había construido: el Templo en Jerusalén y la adoración de Jehová Dios en Israel, por un tiempo.
Estoy seguro que Salomón está hoy en el Cielo; pero también estoy seguro que si él pudiera hablarte ahora mismo, él te rogaría que seáis fieles al Señor Jesucristo para siempre, porque el precio que hay que pagar por negarse a seguir a Cristo es muy alto.
1 Corintios 3:16-17: “¿No sabéis que todos ustedes sois un Templo de Dios, y que el Espíritu de Dios mora en ustedes? Si alguno destruye el Templo de Dios, Dios le destruirá a él: porque el Templo de Dios, el cual todos ustedes son, santo es.”
Finalmente, alguien podría decir:
“¿No es cierto que un creyente siempre puede volver a su Padre celestial en cualquier momento? Después de todo, Dios es su Padre y el creyente es su niño. Como prueba, mire Lucas 15:11-32 con la parábola del hijo pródigo”.
Creo que eso es cierto: un creyente hoy potencialmente puede regresar a su Padre celestial en cualquier momento, sin importar cuánto haya pecado contra su Salvador. Sin embargo, ese caso es diferente al caso de este texto, porque mientras estos judíos eran creyentes, estaban en una situación especial con un límite de tiempo para obedecer.
Los creyentes de hoy ni tienen límite de tiempo en las Escrituras para regresar al Señor o ser destruidos. Dios puede esperar pacientemente toda la vida o puede que no. Probablemente hay muchas situaciones en las que Dios hizo algo diferente dependiendo de las circunstancias.
En cualquier caso, ¡no tentaría al Señor poniendo a prueba su amor y su paciencia! Serías un tonto si lo intentaras. Amén.
¶Lo opuesto El juramento incondicional de Dios a Abraham da un fuerte consuelo a los que han huido para refugiarse en Cristo (6:9 - 20)
Lo opuesto Pero en cuanto a ustedes, oh amados, estamos persuadidos de cosas mejores y que acompañan la salvación, aunque hablamos así: porque Dios no es injusto para olvidar vuestra obra y el trabajo de amor que habéis mostrado a su Nombre, habiendo ministrado a los santos y ministrándoles aún. Y deseamos que cada uno de ustedes muestre la misma diligencia hasta el fin para la plena certeza de la esperanza; que no os hagáis perezosos, sino que sigáis el ejemplo de aquellos que por la fe y la paciencia heredan las promesas.
Lo opuesto Porque cuando Dios hizo la promesa a Abraham, porque él no podía jurar por más grande, juró por sí mismo, diciendo, “Ciertamente bendiciendo te bendeciré, y multiplicando te multiplicaré.” Y así, Y así, después de haber soportado pacientemente, obtuvo la promesa.
El complemento Porque los hombres verdaderamente juran por el mayor; y un juramento de confirmación es para ellos el fin de toda controversia.
El complemento Por lo tanto, Dios, dispuesto más abundante-mente para mostrar a los herederos de la promesa la inmutabilidad de su consejo, lo confirmó con juramento; que por dos cosas inmutables, een el que era imposible que Dios mintiera, podríamos tener un fuerte consuelo, los que hemos huido para refugio para echar mano de la esperanza puesta delante de nosotros.
Único La cual esperanza tenemos como ancla del alma, ambos segura y firme, y cual entra en lo que está dentro del velo; donde el precursor ya ha entrado para nosotros, es decir, Jesús, habiendo llegado a ser Sumo Sacerdote para siempre según el orden de Melquisedec.
Hebrews 6:11-12: “Y deseamos que cada uno de ustedes muestre la misma diligencia hasta el fin para la plena certeza de la esperanza; que no os hagáis perezosos, sino que sigáis el ejemplo de aquellos que por la fe y la paciencia heredan las
promesas.”¿Quién debían seguir estos judíos del primer siglo para que pudieran heredar las promesas? Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moisés y todos los profetas mencionados en el Capítulo 1.4 de esta carta(referencias tradicionales: 10:32 - 11:40).
El Apóstol Pablo ni estaba hablando de ser salvado o convertirse en cristiano: estaba hablando de heredar las promesas dadas a Abrahán, que incluyen la vida eterna y un futuro glorioso con Jehová su Dios. ¡Estos judíos YA fueron salvados! Solo tenían que abrazar al Señor Jesucristo y la Obra Terminada que Él proveyó en el Calvario y dejar atrás el Antiguo Pacto para siempre.
Esto es similar en cierto modo a un cristiano de hoy: si has sido salvado, entonces no puedes trabajar para tu salvación, porque ya eres salvado, e inmediatamente irás al Cielo cuando mueras. La única pregunta entonces es ¿qué tipo de recompensa recibirás cuándo llegues allí? ¿Serán la madera, el heno y el rastrojo los que inmediatamente se quemarán y te dejarán sin nada en el Cielo? ¿O será su recompensa oro, plata y piedras preciosas que resistirán el fuego del Juicio de Dios?
I Corintios 3:12-15: “Y si algún hombre construye sobre esta fundación con oro, plata, piedras preciosas, madera, heno o rastrojo: la obra de todo hombre se hará manifiesta: porque el Día de Juicio la declarará: porque será revelado por fuego; y el fuego pondrá a prueba la obra de cada hombre de qué tipo ello es: Si el trabajo de cualquier hombre permanece, cual él ha construido sobre ella, él recibirá una recompensa; si el trabajo de cualquier hombre será quemado, sufrirá la pérdida; pero él mismo será salvado; sin embargo, como por fuego.”
¡Esto no es “Purgatorio”! No existe un lugar como el Purgatorio; fue inventado por los papas como una forma de recaudar dinero para sí mismos a través de una mentira; ¡Es una estafa para los católicos romanos pobres!
Hebrews 6:17-20: “Por lo tanto, Dios, dispuesto más abundante-mente para mostrar a los herederos de la promesa la inmutabilidad de su consejo, lo confirmó con juramento; que por dos cosas inmutables, een el que era imposible que Dios mintiera, podríamos tener un fuerte consuelo, los que hemos huido para refugio para echar mano de la esperanza puesta delante de nosotros. La cual esperanza tenemos como ancla del alma, ambos segura y firme, y cual entra en lo que está dentro del velo; donde el precursor ya ha entrado para nosotros, es decir, Jesús, habiendo llegado a ser Sumo Sacerdote para siempre según el orden de Melquisedec.”
Me pregunto, amigo: ¿Has huido para refugiarte en Jesucristo para ser salvado?
Podrías decir: “¿Por qué debo correr a Jesucristo en busca de refugio? ¿Refugio de qué? Te diré: ¡Necesitamos refugio desde la ira de Dios por nuestros pecados!
A menudo leo las redes sociales; y veo a muchos que afirman que Dios es solo “un mago del cielo” o una fantasía de algún tipo que no es real.
Amigo mío: puedes negar que Dios existe; y puedes afirmar que la Biblia es solo mitos y leyendas, pero eso no cambiará la realidad que el Dios de la Biblia creó todas las cosas: tanto el Universo como tú y yo. Sólo estás engañando a ti mismo; ¡pero no estás engañando a Dios, y no puedes cambiar la realidad con tus negaciones de la verdad!
Caminamos en el suelo de Dios; respiramos el aire de Dios; y estamos vivos, ¡solo porque Dios nos ha dado aliento y vida!
Y lo que es más importante, ¡usted y yo algún día nos enfrentaremos a nuestro Creador, el Señor Jesucristo como nuestro Juez! La pregunta no es SI sucederá, sino CUÁNDO; porque somos mortales y no podemos vivir para siempre en esta carne.
Entonces la pregunta es: ¿Estás listo para encontrarte con el Señor Jesucristo como tu Juez? Si ha nacido de nuevo a través del arrepentimiento y la fe en la obra consumada de Cristo, entonces conocerás a Jesús como su juez en el tribunal de Cristo, quien juzgará sus obras y le dará una recompensa basada en esas obras. (I Corintios 3:12-15).
Pero si no naciste de nuevo cuando tu cuerpo muera, entonces encontrarás al Señor Jesucristo como tu Juez de tus pecados, quien luego te enviará al Lago de Fuego para recibir un castigo por la eternidad que es apropiada para tus pecados.
¿Por qué querrías encontrarte con Jesús como el Juez de tus pecados? ¿Por qué? ¡Arrepiéntete de tus pecados y confía en Cristo HOY, para que seas salvado y heredes la Vida Eterna en lugar de la Condenación Eterna!
2 Corintios 6:2b: “¡He aquí, ahora es el tiempo aceptado! ¡He aquí, ahora es el día de salvación!”
¿Crees que Jesucristo es el Hijo de Dios, que murió por tus pecados en la cruz hace casi 2000 años y resucitó de entre los muertos, según las Escrituras?
Si es así, entonces es fácil ser salvado, si está dispuesto a admitir que es un pecador ante Dios, y si desea recibir a Jesucristo como su Salvador personal.
Aquí hay una oración que puedes usar para ser salvado:
“Señor Jesús, sé que he pecado contra TI. ¡No soy bueno y tú eres justo! Creo que moriste en la cruz por mis pecados, fuiste enterrado y resucitaste de entre los muertos al tercer día. Quiero que vengas a mi vida y seas mi Señor y Salvador. Por favor entra en mi corazón ahora mismo. Perdóname por todos mis pecados y salva mi alma. En el poderoso Nombre de Jesús, oro, ¡Amén!”
