Romans, Chapter 2.4: The final sanctification of Israel after the Return of Christ (9:1 - 11:36)

§Unique Introduction: Most Jews have rejected the Gospel, despite being stewards of the truth of God under the Old Covenant (9:1 - 13)

¶Opposite Paul wished that he could go to Hell so that his fellow Israelites according to the flesh could be saved (9:1 - 5)

¶Opposite The children of the Promise are the true seed of Israel, not the children of the flesh (9:6 - 13)

§Complement Body: God has elected a remnant of the Jews to be saved, even though the majority rejected the Gospel of Christ (9:14 - 10:21)

Introduction

Comments: We have already studied the doctrine of Election in previous studies from several different angles. However, I made a serious error in the previous studies by supporting the theory that God chose some people to go to Hell, so I want to focus on that theory in this study to correct the error.

I also erred by saying that the 3 theories were in the Bible, and that was only true for the first and third, not for the claim that God has chosen some to Eternal Damnation.

Calvinism claim: God has chosen some to Eternal Damnation

I can agree that the Bible supports the claim that God chose certain special individuals to be saved (Abraham, John the Baptist, Saul of Tarsus etc), because the Bible evidence is strong.

Luke 1:15: “for he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor alcohol; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.” John the Baptist

Acts 9:15-16: “But the Lord said to him, ‘Go your way: for HE IS A CHOSEN VESSEL TO ME, to carry my Name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel: for I will show him what great things he must suffer for my Name’s sake.’” Saul of Tarsus

But I cannot agree that God has chosen anyone to go to Hell. Previously I had supported the claim, because I relied on the traditional translation of Romans 9:22 as

“the vessels of wrath fitted for destruction”. (King James Version and most other English translations)

But I discovered that the original Greek word behind “fitted for destruction” has two possibilities for translation, not just one. And since this text is a main “proof text” for Calvinists for their claim that God elects certain individuals to go to Hell, and in this way, God prevents them from believing in Christ, a different translation calls into serious question whether the entire Calvinist claim is true. I explain this in detail below.

“Proof texts” can be very valuable to understand Bible doctrines, but only if there are a broad base of similar “proof texts” in more than one Bible document. Allow me to explain this further.

Good Doctrine is broadly based in the entire Bible

A good Bible-based doctrine will have at least two or more Bible texts, preferable more. The concept has been likened to a pyramid or a triangle, with a wide base and a narrow top. A shape like that will not fall over, because it has a wide base to keep it upright.

The assumption behind this concept is that all of the Bible is the inspired and inerrant Word of God, which it is!

For example, take the doctrine that we are saved by the atoning Blood of Jesus Christ that He shed on the cross for our sins: I can find numerous Bible texts that support this teaching that are clear and unambiguous.

Leviticus 17:11: “For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that makes an atonement for the soul.”

Romans 3:24-25: “being justified freely by his grace through the Redemption that is in Christ Jesus; whom God has displayed publicly, to be a propitiation [expiation or atonement] through faith in his blood”

1 Peter 1:18-19: “forasmuch as you know that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, such as silver and gold, from your vain conduct received by religious tradition from your fathers; but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a Lamb without blemish and without spot.”

And, based upon this solid foundation of Biblical truth that is very clear, we can read other texts and understand other aspects of the Blood of Christ that are not as clear:

Hebrews 9:13-14: “For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies to the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the Eternal Spirit offered himself without spot unto God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”

Ephesians 2:13: “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away were made near by the blood of Christ:”

Good doctrine is always harmonious with the rest of the Bible

Another characteristic of good Bible-based doctrine is harmony with the rest of the Bible!

For example, while the Way of salvation changed from animal sacrifices through the priesthood of Aaron in the Old Covenant to the Finished Atoning Work of Christ in the New Covenant, the basic theology did NOT change from Old Covenant to the New: the Way to be saved was always by faith (“Abraham “believed in [Jehovah]; and his faith was credited to him for righteousness.” (Romans 4:3b)); it was always through the blood of the sacrifice, and so on.

Bad Doctrine is narrowly based on one or two Bible texts at most

If the pyramid shape is upside down, with the point on the ground and the wide base overhead, then it is obviously very weak, and it can be tipped over easily.

For example, when you have a doctrine (such as the claim that God has chosen some to Eternal Damnation) that depends only on a single Bible text as the proof that it is true; and then you build a large structure of doctrines upon that single text, then you have an upside down pyramid or triangle, which is very weak. If there is any question about the correct translation of that single text that supports the upside down pyramid or triangle, then the entire structure will collapse.

This is how the cults such as Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Mormons, and others create false doctrine that leads sinners astray from the Bible: They focus all of the attention on a single Bible text as the “proof text” (which is taken out of context and the meaning is cleverly changed in some way); and then they build an upside down pyramid structure of false doctrines that are based on that single Bible text.

The doctrine of unconditional election to Hell in Calvinism is narrowly based on only one Bible text: Romans 9:22. This is a red flag that the doctrine is bad doctrine and should not be accepted.

Bad doctrine is not harmonious with the rest of the Bible

The doctrines of Calvinism in TULIP are not harmonious with the rest of the Bible in 4 of the 5 parts of TULIP!

The “U” in “TULIP” (unconditional election to Heaven or Hell) creates a contradiction with several very clear Bible texts:

2 Peter 3:9: “The Lord is not slow concerning the fulfillment of his promise (as some men count slackness); but is longsuffering toward us: not willing that ANY should perish, but that ALL should come to repentance.”

John 3:16: “For God so loved THE WORLD, that he gave his only begotten Son, that WHOSOEVER believes in him should not perish, but have Everlasting Life.”

1 John 2:2: “And he himself [Jesus Christ] is the propitiation [expiation or atonement] for our sins; and NOT FOR OURS ONLY, but also for the sins of THE WHOLE WORLD.”

If I believe something that contradicts what God clearly says in his Word, then I am wrong! You cannot have unconditional election to Hell and at the same time say that Jesus died for everyone, that God is not willing that ANY should perish, and that anyone who believes in Christ can be saved! Those things are absolutely incompatible with each other.

Whenever there appears to be a “contradiction” in the Bible, it can always be resolved with a broad view of the Bible and comparing scripture with scripture. It is not theologically safe to rely on only one text of the Bible to give you the full picture of any doctrine. In fact, this is always the tactic of the cults, such as the JWs and Mormons, who rely on your ignorance of the Bible, so that they can deceive you with quotes from the Bible that are taken out of context.

1 Corinthians 2:12-13: “Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God, that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak; not in the words which man’s wisdom teaches, but which the Holy Spirit teaches: comparing spiritual things with spiritual.”

True Bible doctrine incorporates all texts of the Bible that relate to a particular doctrine and brings them all together into a combined view, so that the apparent contradictions are resolved. This is not easy to do and requires years of diligent study and preparation.

Now let’s briefly examine Romans 9:14 - 33 in the light of this introduction.

§Complement Body: God has elected a remnant of the Jews to be saved, even though the majority rejected the Gospel of Christ (9:14 - 10:21)

¶Unique God has mercy on whom He will have mercy (9:14 - 18)

Opposite “What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God?

Opposite “Certainly not! For he says to Moses, ‘I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy; and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.’”

Complement “So then, election is not of him that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God that shows mercy.

Complement “For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, ‘Even for this same purpose have I raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my Name might be declared throughout all the earth.’

Unique “Therefore he has mercy on whom he will have mercy; and whom he chooses, he hardens.”

Comments:

Romans 9:14a: “What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? Certainly not!”

Never! God is always righteous in everything that He is and does.

I will say it again, that nowhere in the Bible does God say that He has chosen anyone to go to Hell! This text only says,

“whom he chooses, he hardens”

The Bible says only that God hardened Pharaoh’s heart, so that He might bring the nation of Israel out of Egypt with great Judgments upon Egypt and upon Pharaoh. The Bible never says that God elected Pharaoh or anyone else to go to Hell! But Calvinists use this text as if it is a “proof text”, and it is nothing of the sort.

We must be very careful not to read something into the Bible that is not really there; that is the method of the cults and many false teachers!

Remember that Pharaoh had been persecuting the children of Israel for a long time before the Bible says that Jehovah hardened his heart during the Judgments on Egypt and the Exodus! The heart of Pharaoh was already hard against Jehovah and his truth, long before the Exodus! But God wanted to use Pharaoh as an object lesson for the entire world, that it did not pay for rulers to oppose the one true God Jehovah: it could cost you your life and the destruction of your nation. It was a lesson in the Fear of the Lord!

And God wanted the entire world to know the special favor and love that Jehovah had for the chosen people of Israel; and woe to the nation that tried to prevent Jehovah from bringing Israel out of slavery into his Promised Land!

God used the unbelief and rebellion of Pharaoh, so that He might show his power in him, and that his Name might be declared throughout the entire Earth. But Pharaoh still had the power to repent and believe in Jehovah! He did not, because he was a fool; and he did not want to believe the sight of his own eyes of all of the great Judgments that Jehovah executed against Egypt and against Pharaoh.

I believe that God chose people who have already hardened their own heart against Him and his Word; and as punishment for their rebellion, God adds more hardness to their hearts so that they end up self-destructing. But this is not the same as choosing them for Hell, because they already chose to rebel against Jehovah!

In other words, these individuals prepared themselves for destruction, so God added to their unbelief and helped them on their way toward Hell; but He did not choose them for Hell! See my comments in the next paragraph on Romans 9:22.

Sin is like quicksand: once you decide to enter the quicksand, it becomes harder and harder to get out, until finally, it is impossible to escape and you are killed. So it is also with rebellion against God and his Word!

When we choose evil rather than good, we bring a curse of God upon ourselves; and Satan and his demons gain a foothold in our life; and then they begin their work of destroying us from within; and eventually, like a seed that has been planted, it grows until it is fully ripe for Judgment.

James 1:13-15: “Let no man say when he is tempted, ‘I am tempted by God’: for God cannot be tempted with evil; neither does he tempt any man. But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust has conceived, it births sin; and sin, when it is fully grown, brings forth death.”

Let that be a warning to every one of us! The same thing can happen to anyone, even a true Christian! The true born again believer in Christ cannot go to Hell, but he can destroy his own life with rebellion against the Lord Jesus!

Sin is our deadly enemy! We must repent of all sins and rely only on the Finished Atonement of Jesus Christ on the cross: first to save us, and then cleanse us from sins every day.

Unique “Then you will say to me, ‘Why does he still find fault? For who has resisted his will?’

Complement “No, but, O man, who are you to contradict God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, ‘Why have you made me this way?’

Complement “Does not the potter have power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel to honor, and another to dishonor?”

Opposite “What if God (determining to show his wrath, and to make his power known) endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath, having prepared themselves for destruction,

Opposite “so that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had before prepared unto glory, even us, whom he has called: not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?”

Comments: Romans 9:22 is usually translated this way in most Bible versions:

“What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction...” King James Version

But there is a translation issue here, because the Greek word underneath “fitted to destruction” is “κατηρτισμενα”: it is a perfect participle, middle or passive voice; which has two possible translations, because of the two possible voices:

1) “fitted for destruction” (passive voice): in other words, God formed and “fitted” these people for destruction without any choice of their own; and God made these people what they became.

2) “having prepared themselves for destruction” (middle voice); in other words, these people prepared themselves for destruction by their own bad choices.

Calvinism has chosen the passive voice to claim that God chooses certain people to go to Hell, and there is nothing they can do to change that.

But again, this is a contradiction with texts such as the following:

John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have Everlasting Life.”

Both Calvinism (TULIP) and the Bible cannot be true!

It makes no sense to say on one hand that God doesn’t want anyone to perish, but that all should come to repentance; and on the other hand to say that God chose some to perish in Hell. This is a contradiction. The explanation I heard in Bible college is that both are true, and they are like two rails of train track that go out into the distance but never meet as far as we can tell.

But this explanation was a very lame attempt to reconcile two things which cannot be reconciled!

Almost every Bible version translates this Greek word as the passive voice, so that it looks like God chooses some individuals to destruction; but the middle voice is almost never used in any Bible version that I can find. Why is this? I believe that the influence of Calvinist theology is very strong, even among liberal translators.

God knows whether the correct translation should be from the passive voice or the middle voice. My opinion is that the middle voice is correct, because this translation resolves the contradictions with such texts as 2 Peter 3:9 and John 3:16.

Romans 9:22-23: “What if God (determining to show his wrath, and to make his power known) endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath, having prepared themselves for destruction, so that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had before prepared unto glory, even us, whom he has called: not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?”

¶Complement God said through the Prophets that a remnant of Israel would be chosen by election (9:25 - 33)

Unique “As he says also in Hosea, “I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved. And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people’, there shall they be called the children of the living God.”

Complement “Isaiah also cries concerning Israel, “Though the number of the children of Israel are like the sand of the sea, only a remnant will be saved: for he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness; because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.”

Complement “And as Isaiah said before, “Unless the Lord of hosts had left us a seed, we would have been as Sodom, and been made like Gomorrah.”

Opposite “What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which did not follow after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.

Opposite “But Israel, which followed after the Law of righteousness, has not attained to the Law of righteousness. Why? Because they did not seek it through faith, but (as it were) through the works of the Law: for they stumbled at that Stumblingstone, as it is written, ‘Behold, I lay in Zion a Stumblingstone and Rock of offense; and whosoever believes on him shall not be ashamed.’”

Comments: The first three subparagraphs are citations from the prophets Hosea and Isaiah, which demonstrate that in spite of the unbelief of the Jews, God will save a certain number of them through election. Whether that is through the foreknowledge of God or through directly choosing them to be saved without any response required of them, this is known only to God; probably it is a combination of both.

Romans 9:30: “What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which did not follow after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.”

Notice that Paul was speaking in general terms, because obviously not all Gentiles believed in Christ and were saved.

“But Israel, which followed after the Law of righteousness, has not attained to the Law of righteousness. Why? Because they did not seek it through faith, but (as it were) through the works of the Law: for they stumbled at that Stumblingstone, as it is written, ‘Behold, I lay in Zion a Stumblingstone and Rock of offense; and whosoever believes on him shall not be ashamed.’”

And not all Jews stumbled at the Stumblingstone of Jesus Christ, since Paul and the other Apostles were Jewish and were also a born again Christians, along with many other Christian Jews.

Paul indicates that the Jews that did not believe in Christ stumbled when they were presented with Christ as their Messiah, because they were seeking righteousness through the Law of Moses, rather than by faith; so these Jews were false believers in Jehovah, just like many people who claim to be Christians are actually pagans in their hearts, who have never been born again.

Application

Now we can make an easy application here to many people who call themselves Christians today. Roman Catholics, Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, liberal Protestants, liberal Baptists, and even in conservative, Bible believing churches: in all of these, there are people who claim to be a “Christian”; and yet, if you asked them if they have been born again, they would not know how to answer you.

They might say things like: “I have been baptized”, “I have been a church member all my life”, “My daddy is a preacher”, “I sing in the choir”, “I don’t rob any banks, so I’m probably a Christian”, “I’m a good Catholic”, “I try to do good in my life”, “I hope that I will go to Heaven”, “I pray to Mary and the saints”, “I go to church every week”.

These are people who are seeking the righteousness of God through their good works rather than by repentance and faith through the Finished Work of Christ on the cross for our sins.

Sinners like the idea that God will let them into Heaven based on the good works that they have done, because it inflates their ego!

“Lord, look at all of wonderful things that I have done for you! I haven’t robbed any banks, so I’m no worse than anyone else!”

But the Lord Jesus said this:

Matthew 7:21-23: “Not every one that says to me, ‘Lord, Lord’, shall enter into the Kingdom of Heaven; but only he that does the will of my Father, who is in Heaven. Many will say to me in that day, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your Name? And in your Name, have we not cast out demons? And in your Name, have we not done many wonderful works?’ And then will I profess to them, ‘I NEVER KNEW YOU; depart from me, you that work iniquity.’

Countless millions of people who call themselves a “Christian” will find themselves in Hell when they die, because they failed to come to Jesus Christ through repentance and faith in his Finished Work of atonement on the cross for their sins and be saved and born again.

Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: NO MAN comes to the Father, but by me” John 14:6.

Not by being a good person, or doing all of the things people do in an attempt to make God happy; no, only through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ can anyone be saved and go to Heaven when they die! Amen.

Have you been born again? Do not trust your church membership, good works of any kind, or that your family are all Christians.

God will never judge you for what your family is or has done: He will judge you ONLY for what YOU have done and what you are!

Romans 3:23: “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God!”

No one will go to Heaven based on their works, because the only Way to God is by repentance from sin and faith in Jesus Christ.

Romans 3:27-28: “Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what Law? Of works? No, but by the Law of faith; therefore, we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the works of the Law.”

Romans 4:2-3: “For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to glory in. But not before God: for what does the Scripture say? Abraham “believed in [Jehovah]; and his faith was credited to him for righteousness.”

If you don’t come to Jesus by repentance and faith in his Finished Work of salvation on the cross for you, then (to be very forthright) you will absolutely go to Hell. That is your choice. Therefore, choose wisely, my friend! Choose to repent of your sins and to receive Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, today! Whosoever will may come! Amen.

Proverbs 1:20-32: “Wisdom cries outside; she utters her voice in the streets; she cries in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates in the city, she utters her words, saying, ‘How long, you naive ones, will you love gullibility? And the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? Turn at my reproof. Behold, I will pour out my Spirit to you; I will make known my words to you. Because I have called, but you refused; I have stretched out my hand, but no man cared; and you have disdained all my counsel, and wanted none of my reproof.

Therefore, I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear comes, when your fear comes as desolation, and your destruction comes as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish comes upon you. Then they shall call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but shall not find me, because they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of Jehovah. They wanted none of my counsel, and they despised all my reproof; therefore they shall eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. For the turning away of the naive shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them."

How to be saved!

The Bible says,

“that if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved: for with the heart, man believes into righteousness; and with the mouth, confession is made into salvation: for the Scripture says, “Whosoever believes on him shall not be ashamed.” For there is no difference between the Jew and the Gentile: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him: for it is written, “whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:9-13

Are you ready to do that? If so, then find a place to pray privately, and pray this prayer with all of your heart to the Lord Jesus Christ:

“Lord Jesus, I know that I have sinned against YOU. I am no good, and you are righteous! You are my only hope for salvation! I believe that you died on the cross for my sins, you were buried, and you rose again from the dead on the third day. I want you to come into my life and be my Lord and Savior. Please come into my heart right now. Forgive me for all my sins, and save my soul. In the mighty Name of Jesus, I pray, Amen!”

Romanos, Capítulo 2.4: La santificación final de Israel después del Regreso de Cristo (9:1 - 11:36)

Introducción

Comentarios: Ya hemos estudiado la doctrina de la elección en estudios anteriores desde varios ángulos diferentes. Sin embargo, cometí un grave error en los estudios anteriores al apoyar la teoría que Dios eligió a algunas personas para ir al infierno, así que quiero centrarme en esa teoría en este estudio para corregir el error.

También me equivoqué al decir que las 3 teorías estaban en la Biblia, y eso solo era cierto para la primera y la tercera, no para la afirmación que Dios ha elegido a algunas para la Condenación Eterna.

Afirmación del calvinismo: Dios ha elegido a algunos para la condenación eterna

Puedo estar de acuerdo en que la Biblia respalda la afirmación que Dios eligió a ciertos individuos especiales para ser salvados (Abraham, Juan el Bautista, Saulo de Tarso, etc.), porque la evidencia bíblica es sólida.

Lucas 1:15: ““porque él será grande en ojos de Jehová, y no beberá vino ni alcohol; y él será lleno del Espíritu Santo, incluso desde el vientre de su madre”. Juan el Bautista

Hechos 9:15-16: “Pero le dijo el Señor, ‘Sigue tu camino, porque él es un instrumento elegido para mí, para llevar mi nombre ante los gentiles, los reyes y los hijos de Israel: porque le mostraré a él las grandes cosas que debe sufrir por el bien de mi Nombre’”. Saulo de Tarso

Pero no puedo aceptar que Dios haya elegido a nadie para ir al infierno. Anteriormente había apoyado la afirmación, porque me basé en la traducción tradicional de Romanos 9:22 como

“the vessels of wrath fitted for destruction”. (King James Version and most other English translations)

“los vasos de ira preparados para destrucción” (Reina-Valera 1960, 1995, y otros).

Pero descubrí que la palabra griega original detrás de “preparados para la destrucción” tiene dos posibilidades de traducción, no solo una. Y dado que este texto es un “texto de prueba” principal para los calvinistas por su afirmación de que Dios elige a ciertos individuos para ir al infierno, y de esta manera, Dios les impide creer en Cristo, una traducción diferente pone en duda seriamente si toda la afirmación calvinista es cierta. Te lo explico en detalle a continuación.

Los “textos de prueba” pueden ser muy valiosos para comprender las doctrinas bíblicas, pero sólo si hay una base amplia de “textos de prueba” similares en más de un documento bíblico. Permítanme explicar esto más.

La buena doctrina tiene una amplia base en toda la Biblia

Una buena doctrina basada en la Biblia tendrá al menos dos o más textos bíblicos, preferiblemente más. El concepto se ha comparado con una pirámide o un triángulo, con una base ancha y una cima estrecha. Una forma como esa no se caerá porque tiene una base ancha para mantenerla en posición vertical.

La suposición detrás de este concepto es que toda la Biblia es la Palabra de Dios inspirada e inerrante, ¡y lo es!

Por ejemplo, tomemos la doctrina que somos salvadas por la Sangre expiatoria de Jesucristo que derramó en la cruz por nuestros pecados: Puedo encontrar numerosos textos bíblicos que apoyan esta enseñanza que son claros e inequívocos.

Levíticio 17:11: “Porque la vida de la carne está en la sangre; y yo os la he dado para expiar vuestras almas sobre el altar: porque es la sangre lo que hace expiación por el alma”.

Romanos 3:24-25: “siendo justificados gratuitamente por su gracia mediante la redención que es en Cristo Jesús; quien Dios ha exhibido públicamente, ser una propiciación” [expiación] a través de la fe en su sangre”.

1 Pedro 1:18-19: ““sabiendo que fuisteis redimidos de vuestra vana manera de vivir, la cual recibisteis por tradición de vuestros padres, no con cosas corruptibles, como oro o plata; sino con la sangre preciosa de Cristo, como de un cordero sin mancha y sin contaminación”.

Y, partiendo de este fundamento sólido de verdad bíblica que es muy clara, podemos leer otros textos y entender otros aspectos de la Sangre de Cristo que no son tan claros:

Hebreos 9:13-14: “Porque si la sangre de los toros y de las cabras, y las cenizas de una novilla espolvoreando a los contaminados, santifica para la purificación de la carne, ¿cuánto más la sangre de Cristo (quien a través del Espíritu Eterno se ofreció sin mancha hasta Dios) purgará vuestras conciencias desde las obras muertas para servir al Dios viviente?”.

Efesios 2:13: “Pero ahora en Cristo Jesús, ustedes quien en otro tiempo estabais lejos, habéis sido hechos cercanos por la sangre de Cristo”

La buena doctrina siempre está en armonía con el resto de la Biblia

¡Otra característica de una buena doctrina basada en la Biblia es la armonía con el resto de la Biblia!

Por ejemplo, mientras que el Camino de salvación cambió de los sacrificios de animales a través del sacerdocio de Aarón en el Antiguo Pacto, a la Obra Expiatoria Terminada de Cristo en el Nuevo Pacto, la teología básica NO cambió del Antiguo Pacto al Nuevo: el Camino para ser salvado siempre fue por la fe (“Abraham “creyó en [Jehová]; y su fe fue acreditada a él por justicia”.” (Romanos 4:3b)); siempre fue a través de la sangre del sacrificio, etc.

La mala doctrina se basa estrictamente en uno o dos textos bíblicos como máximo

Si la forma de la pirámide está al revés, con la punta en el suelo y la base ancha encima la cabeza, entonces obviamente es muy débil y puede volcarse fácilmente.

Por ejemplo, cuando tienes una doctrina (como la afirmación que Dios ha elegido a algunos para la Condenación Eterna) que depende sólo de un solo texto bíblico como prueba de que es verdadera; y luego construyes una gran estructura de doctrinas sobre ese único texto, entonces tienes una pirámide o triángulo invertido, lo cual es muy débil. Si hay alguna duda sobre la traducción correcta de ese único texto que sostiene la pirámide o el triángulo invertido, entonces toda la estructura colapsará.

Así es como las sectas como los testigos de Jehová, los mormones y otras crean doctrinas falsas que desvían a los pecadores de la Biblia: Centran toda la atención en un solo texto bíblico como “texto de prueba” (que se saca de contexto y el significado se cambia inteligentemente de alguna manera); y luego construyen una estructura piramidal invertida de falsas doctrinas que se basan en ese único texto bíblico.

La doctrina de la elección incondicional al infierno en el calvinismo se basa estrictamente en un solo texto bíblico: Romanos 9:22. Esta es una señal de alerta de que la doctrina es mala y no debe aceptarse.

La mala doctrina no está en armonía con el resto de la Biblia

¡Las doctrinas del calvinismo en TULIP no están en armonía con el resto de la Biblia en 4 de las 5 partes de TULIP!

La “U” en “TULIP” (elección incondicional al Cielo o al Infierno) crea una contradicción con varios textos bíblicos muy claros:

2 Pedro 3:9: “El Señor no es lento en relación con el cumplimiento de su promesa (como algunos hombres consideran la lentitud); pero es paciente para con nosotros: no dispuesto a que CUALQUIERA debería perecer, sino que TODO debería venir al arrepentimiento”.

Juan 3:16: “porque Dios amó tanto AL MUNDO, que él dio a su Hijo unigénito, que CUALQUIERA que cree en él no deberían perecer, sino tener Vida Eterna”.

1 Juan 2:2: “Y él mismo es la propiciación por nuestros pecados; y no sólo por los nuestros, sino también por los pecados de TODO EL MUNDO”.

Si creo algo que contradice lo que Dios dice claramente en su Palabra, ¡entonces estoy equivocado! ¡No se puede tener una elección incondicional al Infierno y al mismo tiempo decir que Jesús murió por todos, que Dios no está dispuesto a que NADIE perezca y que cualquiera que crea en Cristo puede ser salvado! Esas cosas son absolutamente incompatibles entre sí.

Siempre que parece haber una “contradicción” en la Biblia, siempre se puede resolver con una visión amplia de la Biblia y comparando escritura con escritura. No es teológicamente seguro confiar en un solo texto de la Biblia para darnos el cuadro completo de cualquier doctrina. De hecho, esta es siempre la táctica de las sectas, como los Testigos de Jehová y los mormones, quien confían en tu ignorancia de la Biblia, para poder engañarte con citas de la Biblia que están sacadas de contexto.

1 Corintios 2:12-13: “Ahora hemos recibido, no el espíritu del mundo, sino el Espíritu que es de Dios, para que conozcamos lo que Dios nos ha dado; lo cual también hablamos, no con palabras que enseña la humana sabiduría, sino con las que enseña el Espíritu Santo, comparando las cosas espirituales con las espirituales”.

La verdadera doctrina bíblica incorpora todos los textos de la Biblia que se relacionan con una doctrina particular y los reúne a todos en una visión combinada, para que se resuelvan las aparentes contradicciones. Esto no es fácil de hacer y requiere años de estudio diligente.

Ahora examinemos brevemente Romanos 9:14 - 33 a la luz de esta introducción.

Lo opuesto “¡Ciertamente no! Porque dice a Moisés, ‘Tendré misericordia de quien tendré misericordia; y tendré compasión de quien tendré compasión’”.

El complemento “Así entonces, la elección no es de él quien quiere, ni del que corre, sino de Dios que tiene misericordia:

El complemento “porque la Escritura dice a Faraón, ‘Incluso para este mismo propósito te he levantado, para que pueda mostrar mi poder en ti, y que mi nombre podría ser declarado a lo largo de toda la tierra’.

Único “Por lo tanto, tiene misericordia de quien él tendrá misericordia; y quien él elige, él endurece”.

Comentarios:

Romanos 9:14a: “¿Qué diremos entonces? ¿Hay injusticia con Dios?”.

¡Nunca! Dios siempre es justo en todo lo que Él es y hace.

¡Lo diré nuevamente, que en ninguna parte de la Biblia Dios dice que haya elegido a alguien para ir al infierno! Este texto dice,

“quien él elige, él endurece”.

La Biblia sólo dice que Dios endureció el corazón de Faraón, para poder sacar a la nación de Israel de Egipto con grandes juicios sobre Egipto y sobre Faraón. ¡La Biblia nunca dice que Dios eligió a Faraón o a cualquier otra persona para ir al infierno! Pero los calvinistas usan este texto como si fuera un “texto de prueba”, y no es nada de eso.

Debemos tener mucho cuidado de no leer algo en la Biblia que realmente no esté allí; ¡Ese es el método de las sectas y de muchos falsos maestros!

¡Recuerde que Faraón había estado persiguiendo a los hijos de Israel durante mucho tiempo antes de que la Biblia diga que Jehová endureció su corazón durante los Juicios sobre Egipto y el Éxodo! ¡El corazón de Faraón ya estaba duro contra Jehová y su verdad, mucho antes del Éxodo!

Pero Dios quería usar a Faraón como una lección objetiva para el mundo entero, de que no compensaba que los gobernantes se opusieran al único Dios verdadero Jehová: Podría costarte la vida y la destrucción de tu nación. ¡Fue una lección de Temor del Señor!

Y Dios quería que el mundo entero conociera el favor y amor especial que Jehová tenía para con el pueblo escogido de Israel; ¡Y ay de la nación que trató de impedir que Jehová desde sacar a Israel de la esclavitud a su Tierra Prometida! Dios usó la incredulidad y rebelión de Faraón, para mostrar su poder en él, y que su Nombre fuera declarado por toda la Tierra. ¡Pero Faraón todavía tenía el poder de arrepentirse y creer en Jehová! No lo hizo porque era un tonto; y no quiso creer lo que veían sus propios ojos de todos los grandes Juicios que Jehová ejecutó contra Egipto y contra Faraón.

Creo que Dios escogió personas que ya endurecieron su propio corazón contra Él y su Palabra; y como castigo por su rebelión, Dios añade más dureza a sus corazones para que acaben auto destruyéndose. ¡Pero esto no es lo mismo que elegirlos para el infierno, porque ya eligieron rebelarse contra Jehová!

En otras palabras, estos individuos se prepararon ellos mismos para la destrucción, por lo que Dios aumentó su incredulidad y los ayudó en su camino hacia el Infierno; ¡pero Él no los eligió para el infierno! Vea mis comentarios en el siguiente párrafo sobre Romanos 9:22.

El pecado es como las arenas movedizas: una vez que decides entrar en las arenas movedizas, se vuelve cada vez más difícil salir, hasta que finalmente, es imposible escapar y te matan. ¡Lo mismo ocurre también con la rebelión contra Dios y su Palabra!

Cuando elegimos el mal en lugar del bien, atraemos sobre nosotros una maldición de Dios; y Satanás y sus demonios ganan un punto de apoyo en nuestra vida; y entonces empiezan su labor de destruirnos desde dentro; y eventualmente, como una semilla que ha sido plantada, crece hasta que está completamente madura para el Juicio.

Jacobo 1:13-15: “Deja que ningún hombre diga cuando sea tentado, “Soy tentado por dios”: porque Dios no puede ser tentado por el mal; ni él tienta a nadie. Pero todo hombre es tentado, cuando es arrastrado por su propia lujuria, y seducido. Entonces cuando la lujuria ha concebido, ello da a luz el pecado; y el pecado, cuando es completamente crecido, engendra muerte”.

¡Que esto sea una advertencia para cada uno de nosotros! Lo mismo le puede pasar a cualquiera, ¡incluso a un verdadero cristiano! ¡El verdadero creyente en Cristo nacido de nuevo no puede ir al infierno, pero puede destruir su propia vida con rebelión contra el Señor Jesús!

¡El pecado es nuestro enemigo mortal! Debemos arrepentirnos de todos los pecados y confiar únicamente en la Expiación terminada de Jesucristo en la cruz: primero para salvarnos y luego limpiarnos de los pecados todos los días.

¶El complemento Dios tiene poder sobre su propia creación, para elegir hacer uno vasija para honrar y otra para deshonrar (9:19 - 24)

Único “Entonces me dirás, ‘¿Por qué él todavía encuentra fallas? Porque ¿quién se ha resistido a su voluntad?’.

El complemento “No, pero, Oh hombre, ¿quién eres tú para contradecir a Dios? ¿Dirá el que se forma al que lo formó: ‘¿Por qué me has hecho así?’.

El complemento “¿No tiene potestad el alfarero sobre el barro, de la misma masa para hacer uno vaso para honrar, y otro para deshonra?”.

Lo opuesto “¿Qué si Dios, determinado a mostrar su ira, y a hacer notorio su poder, soportó con mucha paciencia los vasos de ira, habiendo preparado ellos mismos para la destrucción,

Lo opuesto “para que él pudiere hacer conocido las riquezas de su gloria para con los vasos de misericordia que él preparó de antemano para gloria, incluso nosotros, a quien el ha llamado: no sólo de los judíos, sino también de los gentiles?”.

Comentarios: Romanos 9:22 generalmente se traduce de esta manera en la mayoría de las versiones de la Biblia:

“What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction...” King James Version

“¿Y qué, si Dios, queriendo mostrar su ira y hacer notorio su poder, soportó con mucha paciencia los vasos de ira preparados para destrucción...”. Reina-Valera 1960; (otras versiones en español son casi idénticas).

Pero aquí hay un problema de traducción, porque la palabra griega debajo de “preparados para destrucción” es “κατηρτισμενα”: es participio perfecto, voz media o pasiva; que tiene dos posibles traducciones, debido a las dos posibles voces:

1) “preparados para destrucción” (la voz pasiva): en otras palabras, Dios formó y “preparó” a estas personas para la destrucción sin ninguna elección propia.

2) “habiendo preparado ellos mismos para la destrucción,” (la voz media); en otras palabras, estas personas prepararon ellos mismos para la destrucción por sus propias malas decisiones.

El calvinismo ha elegido la voz pasiva para afirmar que Dios elige a ciertas personas para ir al infierno, y no hay nada que puedan hacer para cambiar eso.

Pero nuevamente, esto es una contradicción con textos como el siguiente:

2 Pedro 3:9: “El Señor no es lento en relación con el cumplimiento de su promesa (como algunos hombres consideran la lentitud); pero es paciente para con nosotros: no dispuesto a que cualquiera debería perecer, sino que todo debería venir al arrepentimiento”.

Juan 3:16: “porque Dios amó tanto al mundo, que él dio a su Hijo unigénito, que cualquiera que cree en él no deberían perecer, sino tener Vida Eterna”.

¡Tanto el calvinismo (TULIP) y la Biblia no pueden ser verdad!

No tiene sentido decir por un lado que Dios no quiere que nadie perezca, sino que todos procedan al arrepentimiento; y por otro lado decir que Dios escogió a algunos para perecer en el Infierno. Esta es una contradicción. La explicación que escuché en el instituto bíblico es que ambas son ciertas, y son como dos rieles de vías de tren paralelas que se alejan en la distancia pero nunca se encuentran hasta donde podemos ver.

¡Pero esta explicación fue un intento muy poco convincente de conciliar dos cosas que no pueden conciliarse!

Casi todas las versiones de la Biblia traducen esta palabra griega como voz pasiva, de modo que parece que Dios elige a algunos individuos para su destrucción; pero la voz media casi nunca se usa en ninguna versión de la Biblia que pueda encontrar. ¿Por qué es esto? Creo que la influencia de la teología calvinista es muy fuerte, incluso entre los traductores liberales.

Dios sabe si la traducción correcta debe ser de voz pasiva o de voz media, ¿verdad? Mi opinión es que la voz media es correcta, porque esta traducción resuelve las contradicciones con textos como 2 Pedro 3:9 y Juan 3:16.

Romanos 9:22-23: “¿Qué pasa si Dios, determinado a mostrar su ira, y a hacer notorio su poder, soportó con mucha paciencia los vasos, habiendo preparado ellos mismos para la destrucción, para que él pudiere hacer conocido las riquezas de su gloria para con los vasos de misericordia que él preparó de antemano para gloria, incluso nosotros, a quien el ha llamado: no sólo de los judíos, sino también de los gentiles?”.

¶El complemento Los Profetas profetizaron que un remanente de Israel sería elegido por elección (9:25 - 33)

Único “Como él dice también en Oseas, ‘Los llamaré mi pueblo, quien no eran mi pueblo; y su amado, que no fue amado. Y acontecerá que en el lugar donde fue dicho a ellos, ‘Ustedes no sois mi pueblo’, allí ellos serán llamados los hijos del Dios viviente’.

El complemento “Isaías también proclama acerca de Israel, ‘Aunque el número de los hijos de Israel sea como la arena del mar, sólo un remanente será salvado: porque él terminará la obra y la acortará en justicia: porque una obra corta hará el Señor sobre la tierra’.

El complemento “Y como dijo Isaías antes, ‘A menos que [Jehová] de los ejércitos nos hubiera dejado una simiente, hubiésemos sido como Sodoma, y sido hechos como Gomorra’”.

Lo opuesto “¿Qué diremos entonces? Que los gentiles, que no siguió después de la justicia, han alcanzado hasta la justicia, incluso la justicia que es de la fe.

Lo opuesto “Pero Israel, que siguió después de la Ley de la justicia, no ha alcanzado hasta la Ley de la justicia. ¿Por qué? Porque no lo buscaron a través de la fe, pero (por así decirlo) a través de las obras de la Ley; porque ellos tropezaron en esa Piedra de tropiezo, como está escrito, ‘He aquí pongo en Sión un Piedra de tropiezo, y Roca de ofensa; y cualquiera que en él creyere, no será avergonzado’”.

Comentarios: Los primeros tres subpárrafos son citas de los profetas Oseas e Isaías, lo que demuestra que a pesar de la incredulidad de los judíos, Dios salvará a un cierto número de ellos mediante la elección. Ya sea a través del conocimiento previo de Dios o al elegirlos directamente para ser salvados sin que se requiera ninguna respuesta de ellos, esto sólo lo sabe Dios; probablemente sea una combinación de ambos.

Romanos 9:30: “¿Qué diremos entonces? Que los gentiles, que no siguió después de la justicia, han alcanzado hasta la justicia, incluso la justicia que es de la fe.

Note que Pablo estaba hablando en términos generales, porque obviamente no todos los gentiles creyeron en Cristo y fueron salvados.

“Pero Israel, que siguió después de la Ley de la justicia, no ha alcanzado hasta la Ley de la justicia. ¿Por qué? Porque no lo buscaron a través de la fe, pero (por así decirlo) a través de las obras de la Ley; porque ellos tropezaron en esa Piedra de tropiezo, como está escrito, ‘He aquí pongo en Sión un Piedra de tropiezo, y Roca de ofensa; y cualquiera que en él creyere, no será avergonzado’”.

Y no todos los judíos tropezaron con la Piedra de Tropiezo de Jesucristo, ya que Pablo y los demás Apóstoles eran judíos y también eran cristianos nacidos de nuevo, junto con muchos otros judíos cristianos.

Pablo indica que los judíos que no creían en Cristo tropezaron cuando fueron presentados con Cristo como su Mesías, porque buscaban la justicia por la ley de Moisés, más que por la fe; entonces estos judíos eran falsos creyentes en Jehová, así como muchas personas que dicen ser cristianos son en realidad paganos en sus corazones, que nunca han nacido de nuevo.

La aplicación

Ahora podemos hacer una aplicación fácil aquí para muchas personas que hoy se llaman a sí mismos cristianos. Católicos romanos, mormones, testigos de Jehová, protestantes liberales, bautistas liberales e incluso en iglesias conservadoras que creen en la Biblia: en todos ellos hay personas que dicen ser “cristianas”; y sin embargo, si les preguntaras si ellos habían nacido de nuevo, no sabrían responderte.

Podrían decir cosas como: “He sido bautizado”, “He sido miembro de la iglesia toda mi vida”, “Mi papá es predicador”, “Canto en el coro”, “No robo ningún banco, entonces probablemente soy cristiano”, “soy un buen católico”, “Trato de hacer el bien en mi vida”, “Espero ir al Cielo”, “Rezo a María y a los santos”, “Voy a la iglesia todas las semanas”.

Estas son personas que buscan la justicia de Dios a través de sus buenas obras en lugar del arrepentimiento y la fe a través de la Obra Consumada de Cristo en la cruz por nuestros pecados.

Los pecadores les gusta a la idea que Dios les permitirá entrar al Cielo basándose en las buenas obras que han hecho, ¡porque infla su ego!

“¡Señor, mira todas las cosas maravillosas que he hecho por ti! ¡No he robado ningún banco, así que no soy peor que nadie!

Pero el Señor Jesús dijo esto:

Mateo 7:21-23: ““No todo el que me dice, ‘Señor, Señor’, entrará en el Reino del Cielo; sino el que hace la voluntad de mi Padre quien está en el Cielo. Muchos me dirán en aquel día, diciendo: ‘Señor, Señor, ¿no hemos profetizado en tu Nombre? Y en tu Nombre, ¿no hemos echado fuera demonios? Y en tu Nombre, ¿no hemos hecho muchas obras maravillosas?’. Y entonces yo profesaré a ellos, ‘NUNCA OS CONOCÍ; apartaos de mí, obradores de maldad’”.

Incontables millones de personas que se llaman a sí mismas “cristianas” se encontrarán en el infierno cuando mueran, porque no pudieron venir a Jesucristo mediante el arrepentimiento y la fe en su Obra Concluida de expiación en la cruz por sus pecados y ser salvados y nacer de nuevo.

Juan 14:6: “Jesús le dijo, ‘Soy el Camino, la Verdad y la Vida; nadie viene al Padre, sino por mí’”.

No siendo una buena persona, o haciendo todas las cosas que la gente hace en un intento de hacer feliz a Dios; no, ¡sólo a través del arrepentimiento y la fe en Jesucristo puede alguien ser salvado e ir al Cielo cuando muera! Amén.

¿Has nacido de nuevo? No confíes en la membresía de tu iglesia, en las buenas obras de ningún tipo o en que toda tu familia sea cristiana.

Dios nunca te juzgará por lo que tu familia es o ha hecho: ¡Él te juzgará SÓLO por lo que TÚ has hecho y lo que eres!

Romanos 3:23: “porque todos han pecado, y se han quedado cortos de la gloria de Dios”

Nadie irá al Cielo por sus obras, porque el único Camino a Dios es por el arrepentimiento del pecado y la fe en Jesucristo.

Romanos 3:27-28: “¿Dónde está entonces la jactancia? Es excluyó. ¿Por cuál Ley? ¿De las obras? No, pero por la Ley de la fe; por lo tanto, concluimos que el hombre es justificado por la fe aparte de las obras de la Ley”.

Romanos 4:2-3: “Porque si Abraham fue justificado por las obras, tiene algo de lo que gloriarse. Pero no delante Dios: porque ¿qué dice la Escritura? Abraham “creyó en [Jehová]; y su fe fue acreditada a él por justicia”.

Si no vienes a Jesús mediante el arrepentimiento y la fe en su obra terminado de salvación en la cruz para ti, entonces (para ser muy directo) irás absolutamente al infierno. Esa es tu elección.

¡Por lo tanto, elige sabiamente, amigo mío! ¡Elige arrepentirte de tus pecados y recibir a Jesucristo como tu Salvador personal hoy! ¡Cualquiera que quiera puede venir! Amén.

Proverbios 1:20-32: “La sabiduría clama afuera: ella da su voz en las calles; clama en el lugar principal de la concurrencia, en las aberturas de las puertas de la ciudad, ella pronuncia sus palabras, diciendo, ‘¿Cuánto tiempo, ustedes ingenuos, amarán la ingenuidad? Y ‘escarnecedores deleitarán en sus despreciando, y los necios odiarán el conocimiento? Volveos a mi reprensión. He aquí, os derramaré mi Espíritu; os daré a conocer mis palabras. Porque llamé, pero rechazasteis; yo he extendido mi mano, pero a nadie le importó; y desdeñasteis todo mi consejo, y no quisisteis ninguna de mis reprensión.

Como ser salvado!

La Biblia dice,

“que si confesarás con tu boca al Señor Jesús, y creerás en tu corazón que Dios le levantó de los muertos, tú serás salvado: porque con el corazón, el hombre cree para justicia, y con la boca, la confesión se hace para la salvación: porque la Escritura dice, “cualquiera que en él creyere, no será avergonzado”. Porque no hay diferencia entre el judio y el gentil: porque el mismo Señor sobre todo es rico a todos los que le invocan: porque está escrito, “Cualquiera que llamará sobre el Nombre del Señor será salvado”. Romanos 10:9-13

“Señor Jesús, sé que he pecado contra USTED. ¡No soy bueno y usted eres justo! Creo que moriste en la cruz por mis pecados, fuiste enterrado y resucitaste de entre los muertos al tercer día. Quiero que vengas a mi vida y seas mi Señor y Salvador. Por favor entra en mi corazón ahora mismo. Perdóname por todos mis pecados y salva mi alma. En el poderoso Nombre de Jesús, oro, ¡Amén!”
