Romans, Chapter 2.3: The daily sanctification of believers through the Holy Spirit (6:1 - 8:39)

§Unique Introduction: Yield your bodies in obedience to God to have victory over sin (6:1 - 23)

¶Opposite After salvation, yield your bodies to be baptized by immersion, to walk in the likeness of his resurrection (6:1 - 7)

Romans 6:1-2: “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, so that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we, who died to sin, live any longer in it?”

Comments: I want to cover another important topic which is directly related to the content of this chapter, although it doesn’t directly reference it in the text, which is the Fear of the Lord. The first subparagraph (quoted above) requires a discussion of the fear of the Lord, because some people claim that the “Once saved, always saved” teaching gives Christians a license to sin without limit. I will demonstrate from the Bible that this is not true.

Remember from previous studies in Chapter 2.2 of Romans that a believer in Jesus Christ was made eternally holy in their STANDING before God when they repented of their sins and turned in faith to the Finished Work of Jesus Christ on the cross, and they called on Him to save them.

Our salvation was eternally secured by the precious Blood of Jesus Christ in Heaven, and the Bible says that, because of our repentance and faith in the Finished Work of Christ on the cross, God will not impute any sins that we may commit to us.

Romans 4:4-8: “Now, to him that works, the reward is not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that does not work, but believes on him that justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited for righteousness. Even as David also describes the blessedness of the man, to whom God imputes righteousness without works, saying, “Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.”

After I have repented and received Jesus Christ as my personal Savior, and I have believed on his Finished Work on the cross to atone for my sins, then I am forever standing “IN Christ”; and I can never be removed from that standing of grace in the sight of God, no matter how many or what kind of sins that I may commit from that day forward.

Ephesians 1:1: “Paul, an Apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints who are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus”

Ephesians 2:4-7: “But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, has made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been permanently saved); and has raised us up together; and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the Ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.”

Ephesians 1:11-14: “In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who works all things after the counsel of his own will, that we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. In whom you also trusted, after that you heard the Word of Truth, the Gospel of your salvation; in whom also after you believed in Christ, you were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, which is the down-payment of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of his glory.”

“Once saved, always saved” is the teaching of the Word of God!

But many say,

“This doctrine is giving a Christian license to commit sins! After all, he can’t be lost no matter what kind of sins that he might commit, even murder! So once a person is saved, they can just go wild!”

Actually, no, the doctrine of Eternal Security does NOT give a Christian a license to sin; and the reason is very simple: the Fear of the Lord!

Proverbs 16:6: “By mercy and truth iniquity is purged; and by the fear of Jehovah, men depart from evil.”

When a sinner becomes a born again Christian, God moves them from the kingdom of Satan into the Kingdom of God.

John 3:3: “Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a man is born from above, he cannot see the Kingdom of God.’”

Also, the born again Christian has become a child of God!

1 John 3:2: “Beloved, we are now the children of God; and what we will be has not yet been revealed; but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him: for we shall see him as he is.”

Romans 8:9b: “Now if any man does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not one of his children.”

And, as a child of God who has God as my Father, that makes me subject to his discipline, when I go astray from his will!

Hebrews 12:5-13: “And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to children, “My son, despise not the discipline of [Jehovah], nor faint when you are rebuked by him: for whom [Jehovah] loves he disciplines, and scourges every son whom he receives.” If you endure discipline, God deals with you as with sons: for what son is he whom the father does not discipline? But if you are without discipline, whereof all are partakers, then you are illegitimate, and not truly sons of God.

Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence. Shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live? For they truly disciplined us for a few days after their own pleasure; but he for our spiritual good, that we might be partakers of his holiness.

Now, no discipline seems to be joyful for the moment, but painful; yet afterward, it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who experience it. Therefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; and make straight paths for your feet, so that the lame part cannot be dislocated; but rather can be healed.”

Why don’t I just go crazy with committing sins, getting drunk, and fornicating? Because of the Fear of the Lord! I am afraid of his righteous discipline!! Amen! Because it can be extremely painful!

A personal example of the discipline of the Lord

When I received Jesus Christ as my personal Savior in 1982, God gave me his Holy Spirit to dwell in my body, so that I had a personal relationship with Him!

John 20:22: “And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and says to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit right now.”

And with that personal relationship with God, also came THE DISCIPLINE of my Heavenly Father! Amen.

For example, immediately after I had prayed to receive Christ as my Savior, I went into my crew complex on my ship (I was in the Navy); and in the course of talking with other men, I began cursing and swearing. This sin was so normal to me that it was like breathing! So I was doing what I had been doing for many years as a habit.

But something happened at that moment that totally surprised me: I felt like a ton of bricks fell on my head! That was the hand of the Lord giving me a spiritual spanking for sinning against Him. I felt terrible!

But this had never happened to me, never in my entire life! So I asked my Christian friend who had led me to Jesus: “What’s wrong?” (I didn’t understand anything about these things; I was a brand new Christian!) He said to me something like, “Well, you sinned against God; so you need to pray and ask Jesus to forgive you for your sins.”

So I did what he said, and I found a private place to pray and repented and asked the Lord Jesus to forgive me for my cursing; and then I began to remember all of the other sins that I had committed over many years; and I began to confess those as well. And when I rose up from that prayer time, I knew that I was saved! Hallelujah! I knew that something dramatic had changed in my life, and I needed to learn more about the Bible and Jesus my Savior.

So, while, in theory, I COULD run wild with sinful acts, I avoid doing those things, because I fear the discipline of my Heavenly Father. And so should you, if you have been born again, and if you are wise.

Job 28:28: “And to man he said, ‘Behold, the fear of Jehovah, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.’”

Proverbs 1:7: “The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge; but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

Proverbs 8:13: “The fear of Jehovah is to hate evil; pride, arrogance, the evil way, and the perverse mouth, do I hate.”

Proverbios 9:10-12: “The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the holy is understanding: for by me, your days shall be multiplied, and the years of your life shall be increased. If you are wise, you shall be wise for yourself; but if you scorn, you alone shall bear it.’”

Proverbs 16:6: “By mercy and truth iniquity is purged; and by the fear of Jehovah, men depart from evil.”

Proverbs 14:26: “In the fear of Jehovah is strong confidence; and his children shall have a place of refuge.”

By the way, there is a trend among liberals and evangelical churches to change the words of the Bible and in hymns to say “the AWE of the Lord” or “the AWE of God” rather than “the Fear of the Lord”.

This is an error! I can be in awe of fireworks, but not be in fear of them. I can be in awe of the stars in the sky at night, but not fear them. “The fear of the Lord” is a very important term in the Bible! We need the fear of our Heavenly Father in our lives: knowing that He loves us so much that He will chastise us when we go astray from his Word and his will, because He wants us to be like Him! Amen.

King David learned the fear of Jehovah the hard way!

Because I have a personal relationship with my Heavenly Father, and He doesn’t want me to sin against Him anymore, God works in my life to keep me walking in his path of obedience and righteousness. If I fail and I go astray from his path, then chastisement is the result! And believe me, you do not want to receive his chastisement!

Read what king David wrote in the Psalms of his experiences with the chastisement of the Lord in his life! Why would you want to experience that?

Psalm 6:1-3: “O Jehovah, rebuke me not in your anger; neither discipline me in your hot displeasure. Have mercy upon me, O Jehovah: for I am weak. O Jehovah, heal me: for my bones tremble. My soul is also greatly afraid; but you, O Jehovah, how long?”

Psalm 88:1-9: “O Jehovah God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before you. Let my prayer come before you, and incline your ear to my cry: for my soul is full of troubles, and my life draws near to the grave. I am counted with them that go down into Hell; I am as a man that has no strength; adrift among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom you no longer remember; and they are cut off from your hand. You have laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps. Your wrath lies hard upon me, and you have afflicted me with all your waves. Selah. You have put away my acquaintance far from me; you have made me an abomination to them. I am shut up, and cannot come forth. My eye mourns by reason of affliction.”

If you are a born again Christian, then learn a lesson about sin from the life of king David! David committed adultery, and then murdered the woman’s husband; and then took her to be his wife. And he did this in spite of the fact that he loved Jehovah and had a reputation as a very godly man. First, God sent a prophet to David to denounce his sin to his face: “You are the man!!” David repented of his sins, but God had to punish David anyway, because of the extreme nature of his sins. God punished David with the deaths of three of his sons; and the last one tried to overthrow him as king of Israel.

David got what he wanted, but he lost what he had before. He lost the fear of the Lord in his life, because God promised that the Messiah would come through his sons. This promise made David arrogant; and it appears that he probably thought, “God needs me to bring the Messiah into the world, so I can do what I want and He won’t punish me.”

But David learned the hard way that God never ignores any sin, even the smallest. The fear of the Lord is a mix of reverence and respect and love. We love Him, because He first loved us! (1 John 4:19) Amen. We should also revere, respect, and OBEY Him for his righteous hatred of sin of any kind! God chastises his children, so that we might be partakers of his holiness (Hebrews 12:10). Amen.

And if you want to know how much God hates sin, look at Jesus Christ on the cross, who suffered in extreme agony for three hours to atone for your sins and mine! He did that for you and me, because He hates all sin, and also because He loves you and I; Amen!

A sinner has no fear of God in his eyes

Psalm 36:1-2: “The transgression of the wicked says within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes: for he flatters himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity is found to be hateful.”

Romans 3:10-18: “as it is written, “No one is righteous; no, not even one. There is no one that understands; there is no one that seeks after God; they have all gone out of the Way; they have together become unprofitable. There are none that do good; no, not even one. Their throat is an open tomb; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips, whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness; their feet are swift to shed blood. Destruction and misery are in their ways; and they have not known the Way of peace. There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

Hebrews 12:8: “But if you are without discipline, whereof all [of the children of God] are partakers, then you are illegitimate, and not truly sons of God.”

An example of the sin unto death

Romans 6:1-2: “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, so that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we, who died to sin, live any longer in it?”

Therefore, no, a born again Christian cannot continue in sin, so that grace might abound, because his Heavenly Father will not allow it; and if the born again Christian completely rebels against God and turns back to his sins and refuses to return to the Lord, an early death will be the result!

I John 5:16-17: “If any man sees his brother sin a sin which is not unto death: he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that do not sin unto death. There is a sin unto death; I do not say that he should pray for it. All unrighteousness is sin; and there is a sin not unto death.”

When a true born again Christian sins a sin unto death, then you can pray for him, but God will not hear your prayer for him. I believe that the “sin unto death” is what I just described: a condition in which the born again Believer goes into complete and obstinate rebellion against his Heavenly Father, and refuses to return, no matter how bad his chastisement becomes.

I have seen at least one man in this situation. I knew a man in the early 1990s that I was working with. He was an odd fellow, because he was constantly swearing and cursing! I mean that it was almost constantly a stream of filthy words coming out of his mouth. This was very unlike most sinners that I knew, who certainly used profanity, but not like that.

However, I also noticed that he was under extreme conviction of his sins! His face looked like he was being tormented in his soul! It was very obvious to me; it was like the Lord showed it to me. So I suspected that he was a born again Christian, even though he did not look or sound like one!

After we became friends, he confided in me that he was a Christian, but he had shot and killed five men in Chicago over a drug deal some time before that; and he had moved to Minneapolis to escape the police. His face was filled with conviction of his sins by the Holy Spirit, and he was totally miserable!

After a series of discussions with him, I counseled him to immediately go to the police and turn himself in. And if he did not do that, then God was going to kill him, because he was sinning a sin unto death. God would not allow my friend to commit five murders and also escape justice! Not only did my friend need to repent and get right with God, he also needed to get right with the authorities whom God had placed over him:

Romans 13:1-4: “Let every soul be subject to the higher authorities: for there is no authority but of God; the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore, whosoever resists the authority, resists the ordinance of God; and they that resist shall receive condemnation to themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Will you, then, not be afraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you shall have praise of the same: for he is the minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid: for he does not carry the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, an avenger to execute wrath upon him that does evil.”

Unfortunately, my friend refused, because he didn’t want to go to prison. I warned him that the alternative was being killed by his Heavenly Father; but that did not change his mind.

The last I heard, he was in the hospital for severe physical problems. I believe that he died, unfortunately. I did report his confession to the Chicago police; but I have a feeling that they did nothing about it. I do not know for sure.

I do believe that my friend was saved; however, he got involved in wickedness (drug dealing and only God knows what else), and this led to his sins of murdering five men. He was way over his head in sin; however, I believe that he could have repented and gotten right with God if he had turned himself into the police and confessed to his crimes. Sadly, he did not.

Conclusion

My born-again Christian friend, have you gone deep into sin since you first repented and received Christ as your Savior? Repent now, before you get so far away from God, that there is no turning back from death!

God is truly long-suffering and patient; however, his patience will not last forever.

If you have truly been born again, then you are subject to the discipline of your Heavenly Father! God will NEVER allow you to get away with even the slightest sin against Him.

And if you have committed crimes against others, then you need to go to them and/or the police, and make things right with them! Amen.

Matthew 5:23-26: “Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar and remember there that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are in the way with him, lest at any time the adversary delivers you to the judge, and the judge delivers you to the officer, and you are cast into prison. Truly I say to you, that you shall never come out from there, until you have paid the uttermost kodrantes coin.”

How to be saved!

Are you truly born again? Make sure that you are, right now!

Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, and died on the cross to atone for your sins? And that He was buried, and that Jesus rose up from the dead on the third day?

The Bible says that if we believe these things, we can be saved, if we repent of our sins and receive Jesus Christ as our personal Savior:

Romans 10:8-13: “But what does it say? “The Word is near you, even in your mouth, and in your heart”; that is to say, the Word of faith (which we preach), that if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved: for with the heart, man believes into righteousness; and with the mouth, confession is made into salvation: for the Scripture says, “Whosoever believes on him shall not be ashamed.” For there is no difference between the Jew and the Gentile: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him: for it is written, “whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you are ready to be saved, then you can use the following prayer to repent and receive the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Savior:

“Lord Jesus, I know that I have sinned against YOU. I am no good, and you are righteous! You are my only hope for salvation! I believe that you died on the cross for my sins, you were buried, and you rose again from the dead on the third day. I want you to come into my life and be my Lord and Savior. Please come into my heart right now. Forgive me for all my sins, and save my soul. In the mighty Name of Jesus, I pray, Amen!”

Comentarios: Quiero cubrir otro tema importante que está directamente relacionado con el contenido de este capítulo, aunque no hace referencia directa a él en el texto, que es el Temor de Jehová. El primer subpárrafo (citado anteriormente) requiere una discusión sobre el temor del Señor, porque algunas personas afirman que la enseñanza “Una vez salvado, siempre salvado” da a los cristianos una licencia para pecar sin límite. Demostraré con la Biblia que esto no es cierta.

Recuerde de estudios anteriores en el Capítulo 2.2 de Romanos que un creyente en Jesucristo fue hecho eternamente santo en su POSICIÓN ante Dios cuando se arrepintieron de sus pecados y se volvieron con fe a la Obra terminada de Jesucristo en la cruz, y le invocaron para que los salvara.

Nuestra salvación fue asegurada eternamente por la preciosa Sangre de Jesucristo en el Cielo; y la Biblia dice que, debido a nuestro arrepentimiento y fe en la Obra Concluida de Cristo en la cruz, Dios no imputará a nosotros ningún pecado que podamos cometer.

Romanos 4:4-8: “Ahora bien, al que obra, la recompensa no se le cuenta de gracia, sino de deuda. Pero al que no trabaja, sino cree en Aquél que justifica al impío, su fe es acreditada por justicia. Como David también describe la bienaventuranza del hombre a quien Dios atribuye justicia sin las obras, diciendo, “Bienaventurados aquellos cuyas iniquidades son perdonadas, y cuyos pecados están cubiertos. Bienaventurado el varón a quien [Jehová] no imputará pecado”.

Después de haberme arrepentido y recibido a Jesucristo como mi Salvador personal, y he creído en su Obra Terminada en la cruz para expiar mis pecados, entonces estaré de pie para siempre “EN Cristo”; y nunca podré ser removido de esa posición de gracia ante los ojos de Dios, no importa cuántos o qué tipo de pecados pueda cometer a partir de ese día en adelante.

“¡Una vez salvado, salvado para siempre” es la enseñanza de la Palabra de Dios!

Pero muchos dicen,

“¡Esta doctrina está dando una licencia cristiana para cometer pecados! Después de todo, no puede perderse sin importar qué tipo de pecados pueda cometer, ¡incluso el asesinato! Entonces, una vez que una persona es salvada, ¡puede volverse loca!”

En realidad, no, la doctrina de la Seguridad Eterna NO le da al cristiano una licencia para pecar; y la razón es muy simple: ¡el Temor del Señor!

Proverbios 16:6: “Con la misericordia y la verdad se purga la iniquidad; y por el temor de Jehová, los hombres se apartan del mal”.

Cuando un pecador se convierte en un cristiano nacido de nuevo, Dios lo mueve del reino de Satanás dentro el Reino de Dios.

Juan 3:3: “Jesús respondió y le dijo, “En verdad, en verdad, te digo: a menos que un hombre nazca de arriba, no puede ver el Reino de Dios”.

Además, ¡el cristiano nacido de nuevo se ha convertido en un hijo de Dios!

1 Juan 3:2: “Amados, ahora somos los hijos de Dios; y aún no ha sido revelado lo que seremos; pero sabemos que cuando él se manifieste, seremos semejantes a él, porque le veremos tal como él es”.

Romanos 8:9b: “Ahora bien, si alguno no tiene el Espíritu de Cristo, no es uno de sus hijos”.

¡Y, como hijo de Dios que tiene a Dios como mi Padre, eso me hace sujeto a su disciplina, cuando me desvío de su voluntad!

Hebreos 12:5-13: “Y ustedes ha olvidado la exhortación que habla a ustedes como a niños: “Hijo mío, no desprecies la disciplina de [Jehová], ni desmayes cuando seas reprendido por él: porque quien [Jehová] ama, él disciplina; y él azota a todo hijo que recibe”. Si soportáis el castigo, Dios os trata como con hijos: porque ¿qué hijo es aquel a quien el padre no castiga? Pero si seáis sin el castigo, del cual todos son hechos partícipes, entonces ustedes son ilegítimos, y no sois verdaderamente hijos de Dios.

Además, hemos tenido padres de nuestra carne que nos corrigieron; y les dimos reverencia. ¿No deberíamos, más bien, estar sujetos al Padre de los espíritus y vivir? Porque, verdaderamente, nos disciplinaron durante unos días después de su propio placer; pero él por nuestro bien espiritual, para que podamos ser partícipes de su santidad.

Ahora, ninguna disciplina parece ser gozosa por el momento, sino dolorosa; aún después, da fruto apacible de justicia a los que lo experimentan. Por lo tanto, levantad las manos que cuelgan bajo, y las rodillas débiles; y haced caminos rectos para vuestros pies, a fin de que la parte coja no se puede dislocar, sino que más bien puede ser sanado”.

¿Por qué no me vuelvo loco cometiendo pecados, emborrachándome y fornicando? ¡Con motivo del temor del Señor! ¡¡Tengo miedo de la justa disciplina de Jesús!! ¡Amén! ¡Porque puede ser extremadamente doloroso!

Un ejemplo personal de la disciplina del Señor

Cuando recibí a Jesucristo como mi Salvador personal en 1982, Dios me dio su Espíritu Santo para que habitara en mi cuerpo, ¡para que tuviera una relación personal con Él!

Juan 20:22: “Y habiendo dicho esto, sopló sobre ellos, y les dijo, “Recibid el Espíritu Santo ahora mismo”.

¡Y con esa relación personal con Dios, también vino LA DISCIPLINA de mi Padre Celestial! Amén.

Por ejemplo, inmediatamente después de que yo había orado para recibir a Cristo como mi Salvador, Entré al complejo de tripulación de mi barco (estaba en la Marina); y mientras hablaba con otros hombres, comencé a maldecir y a usar malas palabras. ¡Este pecado era tan normal para mí que era como respirar! Entonces estaba haciendo lo que había estado haciendo durante muchos años como un hábito.

Pero en ese momento pasó algo que me sorprendió totalmente: ¡sentí como si me cayera una tonelada de ladrillos en la cabeza! Esa fue la mano del Señor dándome un azote espiritual por pecar contra Él. ¡Me sentí terrible!

¡Pero esto nunca me había pasado a mí, nunca en toda mi vida! Entonces le pregunté a mi amigo cristiano que me había llevado a Jesús: “¿Qué pasa?” (No entendía nada acerca de estas cosas; ¡Yo era un cristiano completamente nuevo!) Dijo algo como: “Bueno, pecaste contra Dios; entonces necesitas orar y pedirle a Jesús que te perdone por tus pecados”.

Entonces hice lo que me dijo, y encontré un lugar privado para orar y me arrepentí y le pedí al Señor Jesús que me perdonara por mis malas palabras; y luego comencé a recordar todos los demás pecados que había cometido durante muchos años; y comencé a confesarlos también. Y cuando me levanté de ese tiempo de oración, ¡supe que era salvado! ¡Aleluya! Sabía que algo dramático había cambiado en mi vida y necesitaba aprender más sobre la Biblia y Jesús mi Salvador.

Entonces, si bien, en teoría, PODRÍA volverme loco con actos pecaminosos, evito hacer esas cosas, porque temo la disciplina de mi Padre Celestial. Y tú también deberías hacerlo, si has nacido de nuevo y si eres sabio.

Job 28:28: “Y al hombre dijo: ‘He aquí, el temor de Jehová, eso es sabiduría; y apartarse del mal es entendimiento’”.

Proverbios 1:7: “El temor de Jehová es el principio del conocimiento; pero los necios desprecian la sabiduría y la instrucción.”

Proverbios 8:13: “El temor de Jehová es odiar el mal; la soberbia, la arrogancia, el mal camino y la boca perversa, aborrezco”.

Proverbios 9:10-12: “El temor de Jehová es el principio de la sabiduría, y el conocimiento de lo santo es el entendimiento: porque por mí se multiplicarán tus días, y se aumentarán los años de tu vida. Si eres sabio, serás sabio para ti mismo; pero si lo desprecias, sólo tú lo soportarás”.

Proverbios 16:6“Con la misericordia y la verdad se purga la iniquidad; y por el temor de Jehová los hombres se apartan del mal.”

Proverbios 14:26: “En el temor de Jehová hay confianza fuerte; y sus hijos tendrán un lugar de refugio.”

Por cierto, existe una tendencia entre los liberales y las iglesias evangélicas a cambiar las palabras de la Biblia y en los himnos a decir “el asombro del Señor” o “el asombro de Dios” en vez de “El temor del Señor”.

¡Esto es un error! Puedo sentir asombro por los fuegos artificiales, pero no tenerles miedo. Puedo sentir asombro por las estrellas en el cielo por la noche, pero no temerlas. ¡“El temor del Señor” es un término muy importante en la Biblia! Necesitamos el temor de nuestro Padre Celestial en nuestras vidas: sabiendo que Él nos ama tanto que nos Él castigará cuando nos desviemos de su Palabra y de su voluntad, ¡porque Él quiere que seamos como Él! Amén.

¡El rey David aprendió el temor de Jehová el camino difícil!

Porque tengo una relación personal con mi Padre Celestial y Él no quiere que peque más contra Él, Dios obra en mi vida para mantenerme caminando en su camino de obediencia y justicia. Si fallo y me desvío de su camino, ¡el resultado será el castigo! Y créeme, ¡tú no quieres recibir su castigo!

¡Lea lo que el rey David escribió en los Salmos sobre sus experiencias con el castigo del Señor en su vida! ¿Por qué querrías experimentar eso?

Salmo 6:1-3: “Oh Jehová, no me reprendas en tu ira; ni me castigues en tu ardiente desplacer. Ten misericordia de mí, oh Jehová, porque soy débil. Oh Jehová, cúrame, porque tiemblan mis huesos. También mi alma tiene mucho miedo; pero tú, oh Jehová, ¿hasta cuándo?”.

Salmo 88:1-9: “Oh Jehová Dios de mi salvación, día y noche he clamado delante de ti. Llegue ante ti mi oración, e inclina tu oído a mi clamor; porque mi alma está llena de angustias, y mi vida se acerca al sepulcro. Estoy contado con ellos que descienden al Infierno; soy como un hombre que no tiene fuerzas; a la deriva entre los muertos, como los muertos que yacen en la tumba, de quienes ya no recuerdas; y están cortados de tu mano. Me pusiste en el hoyo más profundo, en la oscuridad, en lo profundo. Sobre mí está tu ira, y me has afligido con todas tus olas. Selah. Has alejado de mí a mis conocidos; me has hecho abominación para ellos. Estoy encerrado y no puedo salir. Mis ojos lloran a causa de la aflicción”.

Si eres un cristiano nacido de nuevo, ¡aprende una lección sobre el pecado de la vida del rey David! David cometió adulterio y luego asesinó al marido de la mujer; y luego la tomó como esposa. Y lo hizo a pesar de que amaba a Jehová y tenía reputación de hombre muy piadoso.

Primero, Dios envió un profeta a David para denunciarle su pecado en la cara: “¡¡Tú eres el hombre!!” David se arrepintió de sus pecados, pero Dios tuvo que castigarle de todos modos, debido a la naturaleza extrema de sus pecados. Dios castigó a David con la muerte de tres de sus hijos; y el último intentó derrocarlo como rey de Israel.

David obtuvo lo que quería, pero perdió lo que tenía antes. Perdió el temor del Señor en su vida, porque Dios prometió que el Mesías vendría a través de sus hijos. Esa promesa hizo a David arrogante; y parece que probablemente pensó, “Dios necesita que yo traiga al Mesías al mundo, para que pueda hacer lo que quiera y Él no me castigue”. Pero David aprendió por las malas que Dios nunca ignora ningún pecado, ni siquiera el más pequeño.

El temor del Señor es una mezcla de reverencia, respeto y amor. ¡Lo amamos porque Él nos amó primero! (1 Juan 4:19) Amén. ¡También debemos reverenciarlo, respetarlo y OBEDECERLO por su justo odio hacia el pecado de cualquier tipo! Dios castiga a sus hijos, para que seamos partícipes de su santidad (Hebreos 12:10). Amén.

Y si quieres saber cuánto odia Dios el pecado, mira a Jesucristo en la cruz, ¡Quien sufrió en extrema agonía durante tres horas para expiar tus pecados y los míos! Él hizo eso por ti y por mí, porque odia todo pecado, y también porque te ama a ti y a mí; ¡Amén!

Un pecador no tiene temor de Dios en sus ojos

Salmo 36:1-2: “TLa transgresión del impío dice dentro de mi corazón, que no hay temor de Dios ante los ojos de él: porque se lisonjea ante sus propios ojos, hasta su iniquidad es hallada ser aborrecible.”

Romanos 3:10-18: “como está escrito, “Nadie es justo; no, ni siquiera uno. No hay quien entienda; no hay quien busque después de Dios. Todos se han desviado del Camino; juntos se han vuelto no rentables. No hay quien haga el bien; no, ni siquiera uno. La garganta de ellos es una tumba abierta; con la lengua, ellos han usado engaño; el veneno de las áspides está debajo de sus labios, cuya boca está llena de maldiciones y amarguras; los pies de ellos son veloces para derramar sangre. Destrucción y miseria están en sus caminos; y no han conocido el Camino de la paz. No hay temor de Dios delante de sus ojos”.

Hebreos 12:8: “Pero si seáis sin el castigo, del cual todos son hechos partícipes, entonces ustedes son ilegítimos, y no sois verdaderamente hijos de Dios”.

Un ejemplo del pecado hasta muerte

Por lo tanto, no, un cristiano nacido de nuevo no puede continuar en pecado, para que la gracia abunde, porque su Padre Celestial no lo permitirá; y si el cristiano nacido de nuevo se rebela completamente contra Dios y vuelve a sus pecados y se niega a regresar al Señor, ¡el resultado será una muerte temprana!

I Juan 5:16-17: “Si alguno ve a su hermano cometer pecado no hasta muerte: pedirá y él le dará vida por los que no pecan hasta la muerte. Hay pecado hasta la muerte; no digo que él deba rezar por ello. Toda injusticia es pecado; y hay un pecado que no es hasta la muerte”.

Cuando un verdadero cristiano nacido de nuevo comete un pecado de muerte, entonces puedes orar por él, pero Dios no escuchará tu oración por él. Creo que el “pecado de muerte” es lo que acabo de describir: una condición en la que el creyente nacido de nuevo entra en completa y obstinada rebelión contra su Padre Celestial, y se niega a regresar, sin importar cuán malo sea su castigo.

He visto al menos a un hombre en esta situación. Conocí a un hombre a principios de la década de 1990 con quien estaba trabajando. ¡Era un tipo extraño porque constantemente juraba y maldecía! Quiero decir que casi constantemente salía de su boca un torrente de palabras obscenas. Esto era muy diferente a la mayoría de los pecadores que conocía, quienes ciertamente usaban malas palabras, pero no así.

Sin embargo, ¡también noté que estaba bajo una convicción extrema de sus pecados! ¡Su rostro parecía como si él estuviera siendo atormentado en su alma! Fue muy obvio para mí; fue como si el Señor me lo mostrara. Así que yo sospechaba que él era un cristiano nacido de nuevo, ¡aunque no parecía ni sonaba como tal!

Después de que nos hicimos amigos, él me confió que era cristiano, pero algún tiempo antes había matado a tiros a cinco hombres en Chicago por un negocio de drogas; y se había mudado a Minneapolis para escapar de la policía. Su rostro estaba lleno de convicción de sus pecados por el Espíritu Santo, ¡y se sentía totalmente miserable!

Después de una serie de conversaciones con él, le aconsejé que fuera inmediatamente a la policía y se entregara. Y si no hacía eso, entonces Dios lo iba a matar, porque estaba pecando un pecado hasta muerte. ¡Dios no permitiría que mi amigo cometiera cinco asesinatos y además escapara de la justicia! Mi amigo no sólo necesitaba arrepentirse y estar bien con Dios, sino que también necesitaba estar bien con las autoridades que Dios había puesto sobre él:

Romanos 13:1-4: “Deja que cada alma esté sujeta a las autoridades superiores: porque no hay autoridad pero de Dios; las autoridades que existen son nombradas por Dios. Por lo tanto, cualquiera que resiste a la autoridad, resiste a la ordenanza de Dios; y los que resistan, recibirán condenación para sí mismos. Porque los gobernantes no son terror para las buenas obras, sino para las malas. Entonces, ¿no tendrás miedo de la autoridad? Haz lo bueno, y tendrás alabanza de ella: porque él es el ministro de Dios para ti para bien. Pero si usted haces lo malo, teme: porque no lleva la espada en vano: porque él es el ministro de Dios, un vengador para ejecutar la ira sobre el que hace el mal”.

Desafortunadamente, mi amigo se negó porque no quería ir a la prisión. Le advertí que la alternativa era ser asesinado por su Padre Celestial; pero eso no le hizo cambiar de opinión.

Lo último que supe es que estaba en el hospital por problemas físicos graves. Creo que murió, lamentablemente. Informé su confesión a la policía de Chicago; pero tengo la sensación de que no hicieron nada al respecto. No lo sé con certeza.

Yo sí creo que mi amigo fue salvado; sin embargo, se involucró en la maldad (tráfico de drogas y solo Dios sabe qué más), y esto lo llevó a cometer pecados de asesinar a cinco hombres. Estaba muy por encima de su cabeza en pecado; sin embargo, creo que pudo haberse arrepentido y estar bien con Dios si se hubiera entregado a la policía y confesado sus crímenes. Lamentablemente, no lo hizo.

Conclusión

Mi amigo cristiano nacido de nuevo, ¿te has metido profundamente en el pecado desde que te arrepentiste por primera vez y recibiste a Cristo como tu Salvador? ¡Arrepiéntete ahora, antes de que te alejes tanto de Dios, que no haya vuelta atrás ante la muerte!

Dios es verdaderamente largo-sufrido y paciente; sin embargo, su paciencia no durará para siempre.

Si realmente has nacido de nuevo, entonces estás sujeto a la disciplina de tu Padre Celestial! Dios NUNCA permitirá que usted se salga con la suya ni siquiera con el más mínimo pecado contra Él.

Y si has cometido crímenes contra otros, entonces necesitas acudir a ellos y/o a la policía, ¡y haz las cosas bien con ellos!

Mateo 5:23-26: “Por tanto, si trajeres tu ofrenda al altar, y allí te acordares que tu hermano tiene algo contra ti: deja allí tu ofrenda delante del altar, y ve, reconcíliate primero con tu hermano, y entonces ven y presenta tu ofrenda. Acuerda con tu adversario rápidamente, mientras estás en el camino con él, no sea que en cualquier momento el adversario te entregue al juez, y el juez te entrega al oficial, y eres encarcelado. De cierto te digo, que nunca saldrás de allí hasta que hayas pagado el último monedar”.

¡Cómo ser salvado!

¿Realmente has nacido de nuevo? ¡Asegúrate de estarlo ahora mismo!

¿Crees que Jesucristo es el Hijo de Dios que nació de una virgen, vivió una vida sin pecado y murió en la cruz para expiar tus pecados? ¿Y que fue sepultado y que Jesús resucitó de entre los muertos al tercer día?

La Biblia dice que si creemos estas cosas, podemos ser salvados, si nos arrepentimos de nuestros pecados y recibimos a Jesucristo como nuestro Salvador personal:

Romanos 10:8-13: “Pero ¿qué dice? “La Palabra está cerca de ti, incluso en tu boca y en tu corazón”, es decir, la Palabra de fe (que predicamos), que si confesarás con tu boca al Señor Jesús, y creerás en tu corazón que Dios le levantó de los muertos, tú serás salvado: porque con el corazón, el hombre cree para justicia, y con la boca, la confesión se hace para la salvación: porque la Escritura dice, “cualquiera que en él creyere, no será avergonzado”. Porque no hay diferencia entre el judio y el gentil: porque el mismo Señor sobre todo es rico a todos los que le invocan: porque [está escrito], “Cualquiera que llamará sobre el Nombre del Señor será salvado”.

Si estás listo para ser salvado, entonces puedes usar la siguiente oración para arrepentirte y recibir al Señor Jesucristo como tu Salvador personal:

“Señor Jesús, sé que he pecado contra USTED. ¡No soy bueno y usted eres justo! Creo que moriste en la cruz por mis pecados, fuiste enterrado y resucitaste de entre los muertos al tercer día. Quiero que vengas a mi vida y seas mi Señor y Salvador. Por favor entra en mi corazón ahora mismo. Perdóname por todos mis pecados y salva mi alma. En el poderoso Nombre de Jesús, oro, ¡Amén!”
