“This is the work of Jehovah! It is marvelous in our eyes.” Psalm 118:23

Acts, Chapter 1.1: Many Jews of the Diaspora believed the Gospel of Jesus Christ (1:1 - 2:47)

§Complement    Introduction: Jesus gave his Great Commission and the apostles chose a replacement for Judas Iscariot (1:1 - 26)

¶Opposite    The Lord gave his Great Commission to his first church (and all future churches) to take the Gospel to the entire Earth (1:1 - 8)

¶Opposite    The apostles cast lots to choose an apostle to replace Judas Iscariot (1:9 - 26)

§Complement    Peter preached the Gospel to foreign-born Jews and about 5,000 confessed Jesus as their Messiah (2:1 - 40)

¶Unique    God poured out his Holy Spirit upon the apostles; and this miracle brought many foreign-born Jews around them (2:1 - 13)

¶Complement    Peter preached that the miracle of speaking in foreign languages came from Jehovah, the God of Israel (2:14 - 21)

¶Complement    Peter preached that the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus was also from Jehovah, the God of Israel (2:22 - 28)

¶Opposite    Peter pointed to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit from Jehovah as proof of the resurrection of Jesus (2:29 - 36)

¶Opposite    Peter called the Jews to repent and turn to their Messiah; and be baptized as a sign of the forgiveness of their sins (2:37 - 40)

§Unique    The Assembly in Jerusalem began to expand rapidly with many new believers (2:41 - 47)

¶Complement    After baptism, the new converts continued in the teaching and fellowship of the apostles (2:41 - 43)

¶Complement    The spiritual growth of the new converts resulted in more souls being saved, which were added to the Assembly (2:44 - 47)

§Complement    Introduction: Jesus gave the apostles a promise to give them power, and the apostles chose a replacement for Judas Iscariot

¶Opposite    Jesus gave the apostles a promise to give them power to carry out his Great Commission

Unique    The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Spirit had given Commandments to the apostles whom he had chosen. To whom also he showed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen by them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.

Complement    And, being assembled together with the apostles, he commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem; but “wait for the promise of the Father, which you have heard from me:

Complement    “for John truly baptized in water, but you shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

Opposite    Therefore, when they came together, they asked him, saying, “Lord, will you at this time restore the Kingdom of Zion again to Israel?” And he said to them, “It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father has put in his own authority.

Opposite    “But you shall receive power, after the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria; and unto the uttermost part of the Earth.”

The Golden Ratio design of this paragraph (#1) is “UCC-OO” (one unique, two complements, and two opposites):

Unique    The events of the Life of Christ in his Gospel that Luke had written to Theophilus his student

Complement    Christ commanded his apostles to wait in Jerusalem to wait for the promise of the Father

Complement    For as John had baptized in water, they would also be baptized in the Holy Spirit

Opposite    Christ refused to tell his apostles when the Kingdom of Zion would be restored to Israel

Opposite    Christ promised his apostles (his first church/Assembly) the power of the Holy Spirit, to preach the Gospel unto the uttermost part of the Earth.

Comments: The Lord Jesus spent 40 days with his apostles (his first church or Assembly) after his resurrection, teaching and training them for their future missionary work of spreading the Gospel of Christ, starting in Jerusalem, unto the ends of the Earth.

Can you imagine forty days of intense Bible teaching, day after day, with the Lord Jesus Christ Himself as your Teacher? That must have been an incredible experience for the apostles.

But they would need every bit of this training, because they would soon be on their own, as it were, with the Lord Jesus in Heaven at the right hand of God the Father; and they would not have Jesus with them in Person to hold their hand and guide them each day.

They would need to proactively take time each day to pray, to seek the wisdom and knowledge of Christ through the Holy Spirit (who was always with them), and daily read their Bibles (at that time, they only had the Hebrew Scriptures) for strength and encouragement.

The apostles had graduated from “the Bible college of Jesus”, as their professor, their dean, their counselor, and their Pastor! Now it was time to go out and put their training into practice: “Go, win, train, and send”, with the Bible in their hands, and the Word of God in their hearts.

But first, they needed the POWER of the Holy Spirit to do what Christ had commanded them to do. The apostles had already trusted in Christ as their Savior. They had all been baptized, either by John the Baptist or by Christ Himself.

They had spent up to 3 years with the Lord Jesus as his first church, a mobile Assembly of people, who continuously followed Christ around the land of Israel as He preached the Gospel, healed, raised the dead, and fed the hungry.

They had the knowledge of the Scriptures, and the personal tutoring of the Lord Jesus, along with the perfect example of his sinless Life and faith in his Atoning death, burial, and resurrection.

But this was not enough! Knowledge of Christ and his Word alone are not enough to serve the Lord as his Ambassador to the Lost. You must be FILLED with the Holy Spirit, so that you will have the POWER to say what God wants you to say, and to do what God wants you to do.

Now the apostles had to wait until the Day of Pentecost to be FILLED with the Holy Spirit; but we cannot do that, since the Day of Pentecost belongs to the Jews, not to Gentiles; and because the event of the Holy Spirit being poured out on the first Assembly of Christians was a one-time event, never to be repeated. We will examine the Day of Pentecost in more detail when we get to that text.

In order to be filled with the Holy Spirit, we must do as the apostle Paul instructed us to do in his letter to the Ephesians 5:18-21:

“And be not drunk with wine (in which is excess), but be [continually] filled with the Spirit: speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; giving thanks always for all things to God and the Father in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ; submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.”

Notice that Paul said, “Be not drunk with wine,... but be filled with the Spirit”. I read this as “Don’t drink liquor, beer, wine, or any alcoholic beverage whatsoever.” Why? Alcohol is widely associated with sin and debauchery. Have you ever been in a bar and listened to the filthy conversations about adultery, fornication, and other acts of wickedness, the cursing and lying going on in there? Most of us have. No Christian should be associated with alcohol, period. Even if you believe that you are strong and can “handle it”, you are a stumblingblock for others, and a bad example to the Lost. They will not understand that you are a “strong Christian, and can handle it”; they will only interpret your drinking as hypocrisy, and they will reject anything that you say about the Bible from that point forward. They may praise you for your “broad-mindedness” and liberal attitude, but inwardly, they will despise you for being just another “Christian hypocrite”.

Please, for your sake, and the sake of all Christians and the Gospel of Jesus Christ, avoid alcoholic beverages at all costs. Let everyone know that you do not drink, and practice what you preach. They might not want to be your friend, but at least, you will be respected; and that is very important for the testimony of Jesus Christ and the Gospel.

The letter to the Ephesians gives a number of other things that are essential for Christians to do, in order to be filled with the Holy Spirit:

1) Put OFF the “old man” (your old sin nature): “But you have not so learned Christ, if it is true that you have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus, that you are to put off concerning the former behavior the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts.

2) And put ON the “new Man” of Christ in your heart:

“And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that you put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Therefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor: for we are members one of another. Be angry, but sin not; let not the sun go down upon your wrath; neither give an opportunity to the devil. Let him that stole steal no longer; but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing that is good, so that he may have a gift to share with the one having need. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of building up others, that it may minister grace to the hearers. And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, in which you were sealed until the Day of Redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind one to another, tenderhearted: forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake has forgiven you.” Ephesians 4:23 - 32

And it is not necessarily a series of things, one after the other, but all of them, day by day!

1) Put off the old man of sin

2) Put on the new Man of Christ in your heart: stop lying and speak the truth; be angry, but do not sin; don’t steal, but work to meet your needs; don’t curse, but speak graceful words; don’t grieve the Holy Spirit; be kind one to another, forgiving one another

3) Focus on the Word of God daily, sing hymns of praise to the Lord, give thanks always for all things to God in the Name of Christ, and submit yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

Pentecostals and Charismatics are teaching false doctrine in this area, because many of them claim that you must speak in tongues, or you are not filled with the Spirit. But this is not what the apostle Paul taught in Ephesians! There is no mention of the gift of tongues in Ephesians at all. Remember that the church at Ephesus was a strong, mature congregation of Believers:

“To the messenger of the Assembly of Ephesus write: ‘These things says he that holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks: ‘I know your works, and your labor; and your patience; and how you cannot bear them who are evil; and you have tested them who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars; and you have borne, and have patience, and for my Name’s sake have labored and have not fainted.” Revelation 2:1-3

But the church in Corinth was an immature church of squabbling, carnal Christians who were misusing and abusing the spiritual gift of tongues:

“Now some are proud, as though I would not come to you. But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will; and I will know, not the speech of them who are proud, but the power: for the Kingdom of God is not in word, but in power. What do you want? Shall I come to you with a rod; or in love, and the spirit of meekness?” I Corinthians 4:18-21

We should not be following the example of the carnal Corinthian Christians, but the example of the spiritually mature Ephesian Christians.

In summary, the way to be filled with the Spirit is as Paul, under the Inspiration of the Holy Spirit, instructed us to do in his letter to the Ephesians:

1) Put off the old man of sin

2) Put on the new Man of Christ in your heart: stop lying and speak the truth; be angry, but do not sin; don’t steal, but work to meet your needs; don’t curse, but speak graceful words; don’t grieve the Holy Spirit; be kind one to another, forgiving one another

3) Focus on the Word of God daily, sing hymns of praise to the Lord, give thanks always for all things to God in the Name of Christ, and submit yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

Being filled with the Holy Spirit has nothing whatsoever to do with speaking in tongues! Stay away from those who tell you to speak in tongues, and focus on the Word of God, and the things that Paul taught us in Ephesians; attend a Bible-believing, Bible-preaching church weekly, and you will please the Lord and do his will. Amen.

How to be saved

The Bible clearly states that salvation can only be obtained if we repent and believe in Jesus Christ in order to be saved.

Luke 13:3: “I say to you, no; but, unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

Romans 3:21-24: “But now, the righteousness of God apart from the Law is revealed (being testified by the Law and the Prophets), even the righteousness of God as it is through the faith of Jesus Christ to all and on all who believe: for there is no difference: for all have sinned, and have fallen short of the glory of God; being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”

It is impossible to keep the Law of Moses! The sole purpose of the Law of Moses (the Ten Commandments) is to make you understand that you are a sinner who has sinned against God. It cannot make you righteous in God’s eyes:

Romans 3:19-20: “And we know that whatever the Law says, it says to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be shut, and everyone may become guilty before God; therefore by the works of the Law no flesh shall be justified in His sight: for by the Law is the knowledge of sin.”

Sins can only be paid for by the finished atonement of Jesus Christ on the cross! We cannot pay for our own sins with our suffering, neither in this life nor in the fictitious place called “Purgatory”!

Romans 3:23-26: “For all have sinned, and have fallen short of the glory of God; being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus; whom God has publicly exhibited, to be a propitiation through faith in His blood, to declare His righteousness for the remission of past sins, through the patience of God; to declare, I say, at this time his justice; that God may be just, and the justifier of him who believes in Jesus.”

Here is how you can be truly saved TODAY, and know that you have Eternal Life, right now!

The Bible says,

“that if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved: for with the heart, man believes into righteousness; and with the mouth, confession is made into salvation: for the Scripture says, “Whosoever believes on him shall not be ashamed.” For there is no difference between the Jew and the Gentile: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him: for it is written, “whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:9-13

Are you ready to do that? If so, then find a place to pray privately, and pray this prayer with all of your heart to the Lord Jesus Christ:

“Lord Jesus, I know that I have sinned against YOU. I am no good, and you are righteous! You are my only hope for salvation! I believe that you died on the cross for my sins, you were buried, and you rose again from the dead on the third day. I want you to come into my life and be my Lord and Savior. Please come into my heart right now. Forgive me for all my sins, and save my soul. In the mighty Name of Jesus, I pray, Amen!”

If you have turned from your sins and accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and only Savior from sin, please message me through Facebook and let me know that you have done that, so that I can pray for you and rejoice with you in what God has done in your life. Amen.

¡No soy bueno y usted eres justo!
