What do you understand, which is not in us? ^15:10With us are both the gray-headed and very ancient men, much older than your father.

^15:11“Are the consolations of God small with you? Is there any secret thing with you? ^15:12Why does your heart carry you away? And what do your eyes wink at, ^15:13that you turn your spirit against God, and let such words go out of your mouth?”

^15:14“What is man, that he should be clean? And he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous? ^15:15Behold, he puts no trust in his saints; moreover, the heavens are not clean in his sight. ^15:16How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinks iniquity like water?

^15:17“I will show you, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare, ^15:18which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hidden it; ^15:19to whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them. ^15:20The wicked man travails with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor. ^15:21A dreadful sound is in his ears; in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him. ^15:22He does not believe that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword. ^15:23He wanders abroad for bread, saying, ‘Where is it?’ He knows that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. ^15:24Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle: ^15:25for he stretches out his hand against God, and strengthens himself against the Almighty. ^15:26He runs upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his shields, ^15:27because he covers his face with his fatness, and makes rolls of fat on his waist. ^15:28And he dwells in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabits, which are ready to become heaps. ^15:29He shall not be rich; neither shall his substance continue; neither shall he prolong its perfection upon the earth. ^15:30He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches; and by the breath of his mouth he shall go away. ^15:31Let him that is deceived not trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his reward. ^15:32It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green. ^15:33He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive. ^15:34For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery. ^15:35They conceive mischief, and give birth to vanity, and their belly prepares deceit.”

And though I forbear, how am I soothed? ^16:7But now he has made me weary; you have made desolate all my company. ^16:8And you have filled me with wrinkles, which is a witness against me; and my leanness rising up in me bears witness to my face.

^16:9“He tears me in his wrath, who hates me; he gnashes upon me with his teeth. My enemy sharpens his eyes upon me. ^16:10They have gaped upon me with their mouth; they have smitten me upon the cheek reproachfully; they have gathered themselves together against me. ^16:11God has delivered me to the ungodly, and turned me over to the hands of the wicked. ^16:12I was at ease, but he has broken me in pieces; also he has taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his target. ^16:13His archers surround me; he cuts my reins in pieces, and does not spare; he pours out my gall upon the ground. ^16:14He breaks me with breach upon breach; he runs upon me like a giant.

^16:15“I have sewn sackcloth upon my skin, and defiled my horn in the dust. ^16:16My face is foul with weeping, and on my eyelids are the shadow of death; ^16:17but not for any injustice in my hands; also my prayer is pure. ^16:18O earth, cover not my blood, and let my cry have no place. ^16:19Also now, behold, my witness is in Heaven, and my record is on high. ^16:20My friends scorn me, but my eye pours out tears to God.”

^16:21“Oh that one might plead for a man with God, as a man pleads for his friend! ^16:22When a few years have come, then I shall go the way where I shall not return. ^17:1My breath is corrupt; my days are extinguished; the graves are ready for me. ^17:2Are there not mockers with me? And does not my eye continue in their provocation? ^17:3Lay down now, put me in a pledge with you. ^13:1“He aquí que todas estas cosas han visto mis ojos, y oído y entendido mis oídos. ^13:2Como ustedes lo sabéis, lo sé yo; no soy menos que ustedes. ^13:3Pero yo hablaría con el Todopoderoso, y querría razonar con Dios. ^13:4Porque ciertamente ustedes sois fraguadores de mentira; todos ustedes sois médicos nulos. ^13:5¡Oh que callarais del todo! Y os sería sabiduría.

^13:6“Oíd ahora mi razonamiento, y estad atentos a los argumentos de mis labios. ^13:7¿Habéis de hablar iniquidad por Dios? ¿Habéis de hablar por él engaño? ^13:8¿Haréis acepción de su persona? ¿Contenderéis ustedes por Dios? ^13:9¿Sería bueno que él os escudriñase? ¿Os burlaréis de él como quien se burla de algún hombre?”.

^13:10“Él os reprochará de seguro, si solapadamente hacéis acepción de personas. ^13:11¿No debiera espantaros su majestad, y caer su pavor sobre ustedes? ^13:12Vuestras memorias serán comparadas a la ceniza, y vuestros cuerpos como cuerpos de barro.

^13:13“Callaos, dejadme y hablaré yo, y que venga sobre mí lo que viniere. ^13:14¿Por qué quitaré yo mi carne con mis dientes, y pondré mi alma en mi mano?

^13:15“He aquí, aunque él me matare, en él esperaré; pero sostendré delante de él mis caminos. ^13:16Y él mismo será mi salvación: porque no entrará en su presencia el hipócrita”.

¶Lo opuesto    Job a Dios: Muéstrame dónde he pecado (13:17 - 14:12)

^13:17“Oíd con atención mi razonamiento, y mi declaración con vuestros oídos. ^13:18He aquí ahora, yo he preparado mi causa, y sé que seré justificado. ^13:19¿Quién es el que contenderá conmigo? Porque si ahora yo callara, moriría.

^13:20“A lo menos dos cosas no hagas conmigo; entonces no me esconderé de tu rostro. ^13:21Aparta de mí tu mano, y no me asombre tu terror. ^13:22Llama luego, y yo responderé; o yo hablaré, y respóndeme tú.

^13:23“¿Cuántas iniquidades y pecados tengo yo? Hazme entender mi transgresión y mi pecado. ^13:24¿Por qué escondes tu rostro, y me cuentas por tu enemigo? ^13:25¿A la hoja arrebatada has de quebrantar? ¿Y a una paja seca has de perseguir? ^13:26¿Por qué escribes contra mí amarguras, y me haces cargo de los pecados de mi juventud? ^13:27Pones además mis pies en el cepo, y vigilas todos mis caminos, imprimes marcas en las plantas de mis pies. ^13:28Y el cuerpo mío se va gastando como de carcoma, como vestido que es comido de polilla”.

^14:1“El hombre nacido de mujer, corto de días, y harto de sinsabores. ^14:2Que sale como una flor y es cortado; y huye como la sombra, y no permanece. ^14:3¿Y sobre éste abres tus ojos, y me traes a juicio contigo? ^14:4¿Quién podrá sacar algo limpio de lo inmundo? Nadie. ^14:5Ciertamente sus días están determinados, y el número de sus meses está cerca de ti, Tú le pusiste límites, los cuales no pasará.

^14:6“Apártate de él, y que descanse hasta que, cual jornalero, haya cumplido su día: ^14:7porque si el árbol fuere cortado, aún queda de él esperanza; retoñará aún, y sus renuevos no faltarán. ^14:8Si se envejeciere en la tierra su raíz, y su tronco fuere muerto en el polvo, ^14:9al percibir el agua reverdecerá, y echará renuevos como planta nueva. ^14:10Pero el hombre muere, y es cortado; Perece el hombre, ¿y dónde está él? ^14:11Como las aguas se van del mar, y el río se agota y se seca. ^14:12Así el hombre yace, y no vuelve a levantarse; hasta que no haya cielo no despertarán, ni se levantarán de su sueño”.

¶Lo opuesto    Job a Dios: Tu cuentas mis pasos y vigilas mi pecado (14:13 - 22)

^14:13“¡Oh quién me diera que me escondieses en el sepulcro, que me encubrieras hasta apaciguarse tu ira, que me pusieses plazo, y de mí te acordaras!

^14:14“Si el hombre muriere, ¿volverá a vivir? Todos los días de mi edad esperaré, hasta que venga mi transformación. ^14:15Tú llamarás, y te responderé yo; tendrás placer en la obra de tus manos”.

^14:16“Pero ahora me cuentas los pasos, y no das tregua a mi pecado. ^14:17Sellada está en saco mi transgresión, y tienes cosida mi iniquidad.

^14:18“Y ciertamente el monte que cae se deshace, y las peñas son traspasadas de su lugar; ^14:19las piedras son desgastadas con el agua impetuosa, que se lleva el polvo de la tierra; de igual manera haces tú perecer la esperanza del hombre. ^14:20Para siempre serás más fuerte que él, y él se va; demudarás su rostro, y lo despedirás. ^14:21Sus hijos alcanzan honor, y él no lo sabe; o son humillados, y no entiende de ellos.

^14:22“Pero su carne sobre él se dolerá, y se entristecerá en él su alma”.

¶El complemento    Elifaz a Job: ¿Qué te hace pensar que eres más sabio que nosotros? (15:1 - 35)

^15:1Entonces respondió Elifaz el temanita, y dijo, ^15:2“¿Proferirá el sabio vana sabiduría, y llenará su vientre de viento solano? ^15:3¿Disputará con palabras inútiles, y con razones sin provecho? ^15:4Tú también disipas el temor, y menosprecias la oración delante de Dios: ^15:5porque tu boca declaró tu iniquidad, pues has escogido el hablar de los astutos. ^15:6Tu boca te condenará, y no yo; y tus labios testificarán contra ti.

^15:7“¿Naciste tú primero que Adán? ¿O fuiste formado antes que los collados? ^15:8¿Oíste tú el secreto de Dios, que detienes en ti solo la sabiduría? ^15:9¿Qué sabes tú que no sepamos? ¿Qué entiendes que no se halle en nosotros? ^15:10Entre nosotros también hay cabezas canas y hombres viejos, mucho más ancianos que tu padre.

^15:11“¿En tan poco tienes las consolaciones de Dios? ¿Tienes acaso alguna cosa oculta cerca de ti? ^15:12¿Por qué te aleja tu corazón, y por qué guiñan tus ojos, ^15:13para que vuelvas tu espíritu contra Dios, y saques tales palabras de tu boca?”.

^15:14“¿Qué es el hombre para que sea limpio, y el nacido de mujer, para que sea justo? ^15:15He aquí que en sus santos no confía, y ni aun los cielos son limpios delante de sus ojos. ^15:16¿Cuánto menos el hombre abominable y vil, que bebe la iniquidad como agua?

^15:17“Escúchame; yo te mostraré, y te contaré lo que he visto; ^15:18lo que los sabios nos contaron de sus padres, y no lo encubrieron; ^15:19a los cuales solamente fue dada la tierra, y no pasó extraño por medio de ellos; ^15:20todos sus días, el impío es atormentado de dolor, y el número de años es escondido al violento. ^15:21Estruendos espantosos hay en sus oídos; en la prosperidad el destructor vendrá sobre él. ^15:22Él no creerá que ha de volver de las tinieblas, y descubierto está para la espada. ^15:23Vaga alrededor tras del pan, diciendo, ‘¿Dónde está?’. Sabe que le está preparado día de tinieblas, a la mano. ^15:24Tribulación y angustia le aterrarán, y se esforzarán contra él como un rey dispuesto para la batalla. ^15:25Por cuanto él extendió su mano contra Dios, y se ensoberbeció contra el Todopoderoso, ^15:26él le acometerá en la cerviz, en lo grueso de las hombreras de sus escudos: ^15:27porque cubrió su rostro con su gordura, e hizo pliegues sobre sus ijares; ^15:28y habitó las ciudades asoladas, las casas inhabitadas, que estaban puestas en ruinas. ^15:29No se enriquecerá, ni sus bienes perdurarán, ni extenderá por la tierra su hermosura. ^15:30No escapará de las tinieblas; la llama secará sus ramas, y con el aliento de su boca perecerá. ^15:31No confíe el iluso en la vanidad: porque ella será su recompensa. ^15:32Él será cortado antes de su tiempo, y sus renuevos no reverdecerán. ^15:33Él perderá su agraz como la vid, y derramará su flor como el olivo: ^15:34porque la congregación de los hipócritas será asolada, y fuego consumirá las tiendas de soborno. ^15:35Conciben maldad, y dan a luz iniquidad; y sus entrañas traman engaño”.

¶El complemento    Job a Elifaz: Dios me ha entregado a los impíos (16:1 - 17:16)

^16:1Entonces respondió Job, y dijo, ^16:2“Muchas veces he oído cosas como éstas; consoladores molestos sois todos ustedes. ^16:3¿Tendrán fin las palabras vanas? ¿O qué te anima a responder? ^16:4También yo hablaría como ustedes. Si vuestra alma estuviera en lugar de la mía, yo podría hilvanar palabras contra ustedes, y sobre ustedes movería mi cabeza. ^16:5Pero yo os alentaría con mis palabras, y la consolación de mis labios apaciguaría el dolor vuestro. ^16:6Si hablo, mi dolor no cesa; y si dejo de hablar, no se aparta de mí. ^16:7Pero ahora me ha fatigado; has tú asolado toda mi compañía. ^16:8Tú me has llenado de arrugas; testigo es mi flacura, que se levanta contra mí para testificar en mi rostro.

^16:9“Su furor me despedazó, y me ha sido contrario; crujió sus dientes contra mí; contra mí aguzó sus ojos mi enemigo. ^16:10Abrieron contra mí su boca; hirieron mis mejillas con afrenta; contra mí se juntaron todos. ^16:11Me ha entregado Dios al mentiroso, y en las manos de los impíos me hizo estremecer. ^16:12Próspero estaba, y me desmenuzó; y me arrebató por la cerviz y me despedazó, y me puso por blanco suyo. ^16:13Me rodearon sus arqueros, partió mis riñones, y no perdonó; mi hiel derramó por tierra. ^16:14Me quebrantó de quebranto sobre quebranto; corrió contra mí como un gigante.

^16:15“Yo cosí cilicio sobre mi piel, y hundí mi cabeza en el polvo. ^16:16Mi rostro está hinchado con el lloro, y mis párpados entenebrecidos; ^16:17a pesar de no haber iniquidad en mis manos, y de haber sido mi oración pura. ^16:18¡Oh tierra! no cubras mi sangre, y no haya lugar a mi clamor. ^16:19Pero he aquí que en los Cielo está mi testigo, y mi testimonio en las alturas. ^16:20Mis amigos me escarnecen; mis ojos derramarán lágrimas ante Dios”.

^16:21“¡Oh que alguien intercediera por el hombre ante Dios, como el hombre intercede por su prójimo! ^16:22Pero los años contados vendrán, y yo iré por el camino de donde no volveré. ^17:1Mi aliento está corrompido, mis días se extinguen, y me está preparado el sepulcro. ^17:2No hay conmigo sino escarnecedores, en cuya amargura se detienen mis ojos. ^17:3Determina ahora, dame fianza para contigo. ¿Quién es aquél que querría ser mi fiador? ^17:4Porque has escondido de su corazón la inteligencia; por tanto, no los exaltarás. ^17:5El que habla lisonjas a sus amigos, aun los ojos de sus hijos desfallecerán. ^17:6Él me ha puesto por refrán de pueblos, y delante de ellos he sido como tamboril. ^17:7Y mis ojos se oscurecieron por causa del dolor, y mis pensamientos todos son como sombra. ^17:8Los rectos se maravillarán de esto, y el inocente se levantará contra el hipócrita. ^17:9No obstante, proseguirá el justo su camino, y el limpio de manos aumentará la fuerza. ^17:10Pero volved todos ustedes, y venid ahora, pues no hallo sabio entre ustedes.

^17:11“Pasaron mis días, fueron deshechos mis planes, los designios de mi corazón. ^17:12Pusieron la noche por día, y la luz se acorta delante de las tinieblas. ^17:13Si yo espero, el sepulcro es mi casa; haré mi cama en las tinieblas. ^17:14A la corrupción he dicho, ‘Mi padre eres tú’; a los gusanos, ‘Mi madre y mi hermana’. ^17:15¿Dónde está ahora mi esperanza? Y mi esperanza ¿quién la verá? ^17:16Ellos descenderán a la profundidad de la fosa, cuando nosotros descansaremos juntos en el polvo”.

¶Único    Bildad a Job: Los malvados serán maldecidos y expulsados del mundo (18:1 - 21)

^18:1Entonces respondió Bildad el suhita, y dijo, ^18:2“¿Cuándo pondréis fin a las palabras? Entended, y después hablemos.

^18:3“¿Por qué somos tenidos por bestias, y a vuestros ojos somos viles? ^18:4Oh tú, que te despedazas con tu furor, ¿Será abandonada la tierra por tu causa, y serán traspasadas de su lugar las peñas?”.

^18:5“Ciertamente la luz de los impíos será apagada, y no resplandecerá la centella de su fuego. ^18:6La luz se oscurecerá en su tienda, y se apagará sobre él su lámpara. ^18:7Los pasos de su vigor serán acortados, y lo precipitará su propio consejo: ^18:8porque red será echada a sus pies, y sobre mallas andará. ^18:9Lazo prenderá su calcañar; se afirmará la trampa contra él. ^18:10Su cuerda está escondida en la tierra, y hay una trampa para él en la senda.

^18:11“De todas partes lo asombrarán temores, y le harán huir desconcertado. ^18:12Su fuerza será azotada por el hambre, y a su lado estará preparado quebrantamiento. ^18:13El primogénito de la muerte devorará la fuerza de su piel, y devorará sus miembros. ^18:14Su confianza será arrancada de su tienda, y le conducirá esto, al rey de los espantos. ^18:15En su tienda morará como si no fuese suya; piedra azufre será esparcida sobre su morada. ^18:16Abajo se secarán sus raíces, y arriba serán cortadas sus ramas. ^18:17Su memoria perecerá de la tierra, y no tendrá nombre por las calles. ^18:18De la luz será lanzado a las tinieblas, y echado fuera del mundo. ^18:19No tendrá hijo ni nieto en su pueblo, ni quien le suceda en sus moradas. ^18:20Los que vengan a él, ese día se espantarán, como fueron espantados los que vinieron antes.

^18:21“Ciertamente tales son las moradas del impío, y éste será el lugar del que no conoció a Dios”.

§El complemento   Conclusión: Job: Sé que mi Redentor vive; Zofar: La porción de un hombre malvado de Dios es la destrucción total, como tú, Job (19:1 - 20:29)

¶El complemento    Job a Bildad: Sé que mi Redentor vive (19:1 - 29)

^19:1Entonces respondió Job, y dijo, ^19:2“¿Hasta cuándo angustiaréis mi alma, y me moleréis con palabras? ^19:3Ya me habéis vituperado diez veces. ¿No os avergonzáis de injuriarme? ^19:4Y si en verdad he errado, conmigo se quedará mi error.

^19:5“Pero si ustedes os engrandecéis contra mí, y contra mí invocáis mi oprobio, ^19:6sabed ahora que Dios me ha derribado, y me ha envuelto en su red. ^19:7He aquí yo clamo agravio, y no soy oído; doy voces, y no hay juicio. ^19:8Cercó de vallado mi camino, y no pasaré; y sobre mis veredas puso tinieblas. ^19:9Me ha despojado de mi gloria, y ha quitado la corona de mi cabeza. ^19:10Me arruinó por todos lados, y perezco; y ha hecho pasar mi esperanza como árbol arrancado. ^19:11También encendió contra mí su furor, y me contó para sí entre sus enemigos. ^19:12Vinieron sus ejércitos a una, y atrincheraron contra mí su camino, y acamparon en derredor de mi tienda. ^19:13Hizo alejar de mí a mis hermanos, y del todo se extrañaron de mí mis conocidos. ^19:14Mis parientes se detuvieron, y mis conocidos se olvidaron de mí. ^19:15Los moradores de mi casa y mis criadas me tuvieron por extraño; forastero fui yo a sus ojos. ^19:16Llamé a mi siervo, y no respondió; de mi propia boca le suplicaba. ^19:17Mi aliento vino a ser extraño a mi esposa, aunque por los hijos de mis entrañas le rogaba. ^19:18Aun los muchachos me menospreciaron; al levantarme, hablaban contra mí. ^19:19Todos mis amigos íntimos me aborrecieron; y los que yo amaba, se volvieron contra mí. ^19:20Mi piel y mi carne se pegaron a mis huesos; y he escapado con sólo la piel de mis dientes”.

^19:21“Oh, ustedes mis amigos, tened compasión de mí, tened compasión de mí: porque la mano de Dios me ha tocado. ^19:22¿Por qué me perseguís como Dios, y no os hartáis de mi carne?

^19:23“¡Quién diese ahora que mis palabras fuesen escritas! ¡Quién diese que se escribiesen en un libro! ^19:24¡Que con cincel de hierro y con plomo fuesen en piedra esculpidas para siempre! ^19:25Yo sé que mi Redentor vive, y en el Día Final se levantará sobre la tierra; ^19:26y después de deshecha esta mi piel, en mi carne he de ver a Dios; ^19:27al cual he de ver por mí mismo, y mis ojos lo verán, y no otro, aunque mis entrañas se consuman dentro de mí.

^19:28“Pero debierais decir, ‘¿Por qué lo perseguimos? Ya que la raíz del asunto se halla en mí’. ^19:29Temed ustedes delante de la espada: porque la ira trae el castigo de la espada, para que sepáis que hay un Juicio”.

¶El complemento    Zofar a Job: La porción de un hombre malvado de Dios es la destrucción total, como tú, Job (20:1 - 29)

^20:1Respondió entonces Zofar el naamatita, y dijo, ^20:2“Por cierto mis pensamientos me hacen responder, y por tanto me apresuro. ^20:3La reprensión de mi censura he oído, y me hace responder el espíritu de mi inteligencia.

^20:4“¿No sabes esto, que desde la antigüedad, desde el tiempo que fue puesto el hombre sobre la tierra; ^20:5que la alegría de los impíos es breve, y el gozo del hipócrita sólo por un momento? ^20:6Aunque subiere su altivez hasta el cielo, y su cabeza tocare en las nubes, ^20:7como su estiércol perecerá para siempre; los que le hubieren visto, dirán, ‘¿Qué es de él?’. ^20:8Como sueño volará, y no será hallado; y se disipará como visión nocturna. ^20:9El ojo que le vio, nunca más le verá; ni su lugar le contemplará ya más. ^20:10Sus hijos buscarán el favor de los pobres; y sus manos devolverán lo que él robó”.

^20:11“Sus huesos están llenos del pecado de su juventud, yacerán con él en el polvo. ^20:12Si el mal se endulzó en su boca, si lo ocultaba debajo de su lengua; ^20:13si le parecía bien, y no lo dejaba, sino que lo detenía en su paladar; ^20:14su comida se mudará en sus entrañas, hiel de áspides será dentro de él. ^20:15Devoró riquezas, pero las vomitará; de su vientre las sacará Dios. ^20:16Veneno de áspides chupará; lo matará lengua de víbora. ^20:17No verá los arroyos, los ríos, los torrentes de miel y de leche. ^20:18Restituirá el trabajo conforme a los bienes que tomó; según su sustancia será la restitución, y no se gozará en ello.

^20:19“Por cuanto quebrantó y desamparó a los pobres, y robó casas que él no edificó. ^20:20Por tanto, no sentirá él sosiego en su vientre, ni salvará nada de lo que codiciaba. ^20:21No quedó nada que no comiese; por tanto, su bien no será duradero. ^20:22En la plenitud de su prosperidad, tendrá estrechez; la mano de todos los malvados vendrá sobre él. ^20:23Cuando se pusiere a llenar su vientre, Dios enviará sobre él el furor de su ira, y la hará llover sobre él y sobre su comida. ^20:24Huirá de las armas de hierro, pero el arco de acero le atravesará. ^20:25Saldrá la saeta por su espalda, relumbrante saldrá por su hiel; sobre él vendrán terrores. ^20:26Todas las tinieblas estarán guardadas en sus lugares secretos; fuego no atizado lo devorará, y consumirá al que quede en su tienda. ^20:27Los cielos descubrirán su iniquidad, y la tierra se levantará contra él. ^20:28Los frutos de su casa serán trasportados; serán esparcidos en el día de su furor.

^20:29“Ésta es la porción de Dios para el hombre impío, y la herencia que Dios le ha señalado”.
