You have blessed the work of his hands; and his substance is increased in the land. ^1:11But now put forth your hand, and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face.” ^1:12And Jehovah said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not put forth your hand upon himself.” So Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah.

^1:13And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house; ^1:14and a messenger came to Job, and said, “The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys feeding beside them; ^1:15and the Sabeans attacked us, and took them away; moreover, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and only I have escaped alone to tell you.” ^1:16While he was still speaking, another also came, and said, “The fire of God has fallen from heaven, and burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; and only I have escaped alone to tell you.” ^1:17While he was still speaking, another also came, and said, “The Chaldeans formed three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away; moreover, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and only I have escaped alone to tell you.” ^1:18While he was still speaking, another also came, and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house; ^1:19and, behold, a great wind came from the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house; and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and only I have escaped alone to tell you.” ^1:20Then Job arose, and tore his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshiped. ^1:21And he said, “Naked I came out of my mother’s womb; and naked shall I return there. Jehovah gave, and Jehovah has taken away. Blessed is the Name of Jehovah.” ^1:22In all this Job did not sin, nor did he charge God foolishly.

^2:1Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah; and Satan also came among them to present himself before Jehovah. ^2:2And Jehovah said to Satan, “Where do you come from?” And Satan answered Jehovah, and said, “From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.” ^2:3And Jehovah said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is no one like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man: one that fears God, and shuns evil? And still he holds fast his integrity, although you moved me against him, to destroy him without cause.” ^2:4And Satan answered Jehovah, and said, “Skin for skin; moreover, all that a man has will he give for his life. ^2:5But put forth your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh; and he will curse you to your face.” ^2:6And Jehovah said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand, but spare his life.”

^2:7So Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah, and struck Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot to his crown. ^2:8And he took a potsherd to scrape himself with it; and he sat down among the ashes. ^2:9Then his wife said to him, “Do you still retain your integrity? Curse God, and die!” ^2:10But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. What? Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

^2:11Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that had come upon him, they came every one from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him. ^2:12And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and did not know him, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they tore every one his mantle; and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven. ^2:13So they sat down upon the ground with him seven days and seven nights; and no one spoke a word to him: for they saw that his grief was very great.

^3:1After this Job opened his mouth, and cursed his day; ^3:2and Job spoke, and said, ^3:3“Let the day perish in which I was born, and the night in which it was said, ‘A man child is conceived.’ ^3:4Let that day be darkness; let God not regard it from above; neither let the light shine upon it. ^3:5Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it. ^3:6As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined to the days of the year: let it not come into the number of the months. ^3:7Lo, let that night be solitary; let no joyful voice come into it. ^3:8Let them curse it that curse the day, who are ready to raise up their mourning. ^3:9Let the stars of its twilight be dark; let it look for light, but have none; neither let it see the dawning of the day, ^3:10because it did not shut up the doors of my mother’s womb, nor did it hide sorrow from my eyes.

^3:11“Why did I not die from the womb? Why did I not give up the spirit when I came out of the belly? ^3:12Why did the knees receive me? Or why the breasts that I should suck? ^3:13For now I would have lain still and been quiet; I would have slept, and then I would have been at rest, ^3:14with kings and counselors of the earth, who built desolate places for themselves; ^3:15or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver; ^3:16or as a hidden untimely birth I would not have been: as infants which never saw light. ^3:17There the wicked cease from troubling, and there the weary are at rest. ^3:18There the prisoners rest together: they cannot hear the voice of the oppressor. ^3:19The small and great are there; and the servant is free from his master.”

^3:20“Why is light given to him that is in misery, and life to the bitter in soul; ^3:21who long for death, but it does not come; and dig for it more than for hidden treasures; ^3:22who rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?

^3:23“Why is light given to a man whose way is hidden, and whom God has hedged in? ^3:24For my sighing comes before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the water.

^3:25“For the thing which I greatly feared has come upon me, and that which I was afraid of has come to me. ^3:26I was not in safety; neither did I have rest; neither was I quiet, yet trouble came.”

¶Complement   Eliphaz: Surely you have sinned and God is punishing you (4:1 - 5:7)

^4:1Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said, ^4:2“If we try to commune with you, will you be grieved? But who can withhold himself from speaking?

^4:3“Behold, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened the weak hands. ^4:4Your words have upheld him that was falling, and you have strengthened the feeble knees.

^4:5“But now it has come upon you, and you faint; it touches you, and you are troubled. ^4:6Is not this a sign of your fear, your confidence, your hope, and the uprightness of your ways? ^4:7Please remember, who ever perished, being innocent? Or where were the righteous cut off? ^4:8Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity and sow wickedness, reap the same. ^4:9By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed. ^4:10The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken. ^4:11The old lion perishes for lack of prey, and the stout lion’s whelps are scattered abroad.”

^4:12“Now a thing was secretly brought to me, and my ear received a little of it. ^4:13In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, ^4:14fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones shake. ^4:15Then a spirit passed before my face, and the hair of my flesh stood up. ^4:16It stood still, but I could not discern its form; an image was before my eyes. There was silence, and then I heard a voice, saying, ^4:17‘Shall mortal man be more just than God? Shall a man be more pure than his Maker? ^4:18Behold, he put no trust in his servants, and his angels he charged with folly. ^4:19How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before the moth? ^4:20They are destroyed from morning until evening: they perish forever without anyone noticing. ^4:21Does not their excellence which is in them go away? They die, even without wisdom.’

^5:1“Call now, if there is anyone that will answer you. And to which of the saints will you turn? ^5:2For wrath kills the foolish man, and envy slays the silly one. ^5:3I have seen the foolish taking root, but suddenly I cursed his habitation. ^5:4His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate; neither is there anyone to deliver them. ^5:5Whose harvest the hungry eats up, and takes it even out of the thorns; and the robber swallows up their substance. ^5:6Although affliction does not come forth of the dust; neither does trouble spring out of the ground, ^5:7yet man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upward.”

^5:8“I would seek unto God; and unto God would I commit my cause, ^5:9who does great and unsearchable things, marvelous things without number; ^5:10who gives rain upon the earth, and sends water upon the fields, ^5:11to set up on high those that are low, so that those which mourn may be exalted to safety.

^5:12“He frustrates the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their schemes. ^5:13He takes the wise in their own craftiness; and the counsel of the perverse is carried headlong. ^5:14They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope in the noonday as in the night.

^5:15“But he saves the poor from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty. ^5:16So the poor has hope, and iniquity stops her mouth.”

^5:17“Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects; therefore despise not the discipline of the Almighty: ^5:18for he makes sore, and binds up; he wounds, and his hands make whole. ^5:19In six troubles he shall deliver you; moreover, in seven shall no evil touch you. ^5:20In famine shall he redeem you from death; and in war from the power of the sword. ^5:21You shall be hidden from the scourge of the tongue; neither shall you be afraid of destruction when it comes. ^5:22You shall laugh at destruction and famine; neither shall you be afraid of the beasts of the earth: ^5:23for you shall be in league with the stones of the field, and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with you. ^5:24And you shall know that your tabernacle shall be in peace; and you shall visit your habitation, and shall not sin. ^5:25Also you shall know that your seed shall be great, and your offspring as the grass of the earth. ^5:26You shall come to your grave in a full age, like a shock of grain comes in in his season.

^5:27“Behold this; we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know it for your own good.”

^6:1But Job answered and said, ^6:2“O that my grief were thoroughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together! ^6:3For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea; therefore my words are swallowed up: ^6:4for the arrows of the Almighty are within me; their poison drinks up my spirit, and the terrors of God set themselves in array against me.

^6:5“Does the wild donkey bray when he has grass? Or does the ox low over his fodder? ^6:6Can that which is tasteless be eaten without salt? Or is there any taste in the white of an egg? ^6:7The things that my soul refused to touch are as my sorrowful food. ^6:8Oh that I might have my request; and that God would grant me the thing that I long for! ^6:9Even that it would please God to destroy me, that he would release his hand, and cut me off!

^6:10“Then would I yet have comfort; moreover, I would harden myself in sorrow. Let him not spare: for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One. ^6:11What is my strength, that I should hope? And what is my end, that I should prolong my life? ^6:12Is my strength the strength of stones? Or is my flesh of bronze? ^6:13Is not my help in me? And is wisdom driven completely from me? ^6:14To him that is afflicted pity should be shown from his friend, but he forsakes the fear of the Almighty. ^6:15My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook; and they pass away as the stream of brooks, ^6:16which are blackish by reason of the ice, and where the snow is hidden. ^6:17When they grow warm, they vanish; when it is hot, they are consumed out of their place. ^6:18The paths of their way are turned aside; they go to nothing, and perish. ^6:19The travelers of Tema looked, the companies of Sheba waited for them. ^6:20They were disgraced because they had hoped. They came there, and were ashamed: ^6:21for now you are nothing; you see my casting down, and are afraid. ^6:22Did I say, ‘Bring to me?’ Or, ‘Give a reward for me of your substance?’ ^6:23Or, ‘Deliver me from the enemy’s hand?’ Or, ‘Redeem me from the hand of the mighty?’ ^6:24Teach me, and I will hold my tongue; and cause me to understand where I have gone astray. ^6:25How forceful are right words! But what does your arguing reprove? ^6:26Do you imagine to reprove words, and the speeches of one who is desperate, which are as wind? ^6:27Yea, you overwhelm the fatherless, and dig a pit for your friend.”

^6:28“Now therefore be content; look upon me: for it is evident to you if I lie. ^6:29Return, please: let it not be iniquity; moreover, return again: my righteousness is in it. ^6:30Is there iniquity in my tongue? Cannot my taste discern perverse things? ^7:1Is there not an appointed time to man upon earth? Are not his days also like the days of a hired man? ^7:2As a servant earnestly desires the shadow, and as a hired man looks for pay for his work, ^7:3so am I made to possess months of vanity, and wearisome nights are appointed to me. ^7:4When I lie down, I say, ‘When shall I arise, and the night be gone?’ And I am full of tossing back and forth to the dawning of the day. ^7:5My flesh is clothed with worms and clods of dust; my skin is broken, and become loathsome. ^7:6My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, and are spent without hope. ^7:7O remember that my life is wind; my eye shall no longer see good. ^7:8The eye of him that has seen me shall see me no more; your eyes are upon me, and I am not. ^7:9As the cloud is consumed and vanishes away, so he that goes down to the grave shall not come up again. ^7:10He shall return no more to his house; neither shall his place know him anymore.

^7:11“Therefore I will not refrain my mouth. I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul. ^7:12Am I a sea, or a whale, that you set a watch over me? ^7:13When I say, ‘My bed shall comfort me; my couch shall ease my complaint’, ^7:14then you scare me with dreams, and terrify me through visions, ^7:15so that my soul chooses strangling, and death rather than my life. ^7:16I loath it. I do not wish to live forever. Let me alone: for my days are vanity. ^7:17What is man, that you should magnify him? And that you should set your heart upon him? ^7:18And that you should visit him every morning, and test him every moment? ^7:19How long will you not depart from me, nor let me alone until I swallow down my spit? ^7:20Have I sinned? What shall I do to you, O you preserver of men? Why have you set me as a mark against you, so that I am a burden to myself? ^7:21And why do you not pardon my transgression, and take away my iniquity? For now I shall sleep in the dust; and you shall seek me in the morning, but I shall not be.”

^8:1Then Bildad the Shuhite answered, and said, ^8:2“How long will you speak these things? And how long shall the words of your mouth be like a strong wind?

^8:3“Does God pervert judgment? Or does the Almighty pervert justice? ^8:4If your children have sinned against him, and he has cast them away for their transgression; ^8:5if you would seek to God earnestly, and make your supplication to the Almighty; ^8:6if you were pure and upright, surely now he would awake for you, and make the habitation of your righteousness prosperous. ^8:7Though your beginning was small, yet your latter end should greatly increase.”

^8:8“For please inquire of the former age, and prepare yourself to the search of their fathers ^8:9(for we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days upon earth are a shadow). ^8:10Shall they not teach you, and tell you, and utter words out of their heart? ^8:11Can the rush grow up without a marsh? Can the flag grow without water? ^8:12While it is still in his greenness and not cut down, it withers before any other herb.

^8:13“So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hypocrite’s hope shall perish, ^8:14whose hope shall be cut off, and whose trust shall be a spider’s web. ^8:15He shall lean upon his house, but it shall not stand; he shall hold it fast, but it shall not endure. ^8:16He is green before the sun, and his branch shoots forth in his garden. ^8:17His roots are wrapped around the heap, and sees the place of stones. ^8:18If he destroys him from his place, then it shall deny him, saying, ‘I have not seen you.’ ^8:19Behold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the earth shall others grow.

^8:20“Behold, God will not cast away a blameless man; neither will he help the evildoers, ^8:21until he fills your mouth with laughing, and your lips with rejoicing. ^8:22They that hate you shall be clothed with shame; and the dwelling place of the wicked shall come to nothing.”

^9:13“If God will not withdraw his anger, the allies of the proud lie prostrate under him. ^9:14How much less shall I answer him, and choose out my words to reason with him? ^9:15Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer, but I would make supplication to my Judge. ^9:16If I had called, and he had answered me, yet would I not believe that he had given heed to my voice: ^9:17for he breaks me with a tempest, and multiplies my wounds without cause. ^9:18He will not allow me to take my breath, but fills me with bitterness. ^9:19If I speak of strength, lo, he is strong; and if of judgment, who shall set me a time to plead? ^9:20If I justify myself, my own mouth shall condemn me. If I say, ‘I am perfect’, it also shall prove me perverse. ^9:21Though I was perfect, yet would I not know my own soul; I would despise my life.”

^9:22“This is one thing; therefore I said it, ‘He destroys both the blameless and the wicked.’ ^9:23If the scourge slays suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent. ^9:24The earth is given into the hand of the wicked. He covers the faces of its judges; if not, where, and who is he?

^9:25“Now my days are swifter than a foot messenger. They flee away; they see no good. ^9:26They have passed away as the swift ships; as the eagle that hurries to the prey. ^9:27If I say, ‘I will forget my complaint; I will leave off my heaviness, and comfort myself; ^9:28I am afraid of all my sorrows’, I know that you will not hold me innocent. ^9:29If I am wicked, why then do I labor in vain? ^9:30If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean, ^9:31yet you shall plunge me in the ditch, and my own clothes shall abhor me. ^9:32For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment; ^9:33neither is there any mediator between us, that might lay his hand upon us both. ^9:34Let him take his rod away from me, and let his fear not terrify me, ^9:35for then I would speak, and not fear him; but it is not so with me.

^10:1“My soul is weary of my life; I will leave my complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul. ^10:2I will say to God, ‘Do not condemn me; show me why you contend with me. ^10:3Is it good to you that you should oppress, that you should despise the work of your hands, and shine upon the counsel of the wicked? ^10:4Do you have eyes of flesh? Or do you see as man sees? ^10:5Are your days as the days of man; or your years as man’s days, ^10:6that you inquire after my iniquity, and search after my sin? ^10:7You know that I am not wicked; and there is no one that can deliver out of your hand. ^10:8Your hands have made me and fashioned me together round about, yet you are destroying me. ^10:9Please, remember that you have made me as the clay. And will you bring me into dust again? ^10:10Have you not poured me out as milk, and curdled me like cheese? ^10:11You have clothed me with skin and flesh, and have fenced me with bones and sinews. ^10:12You have granted me life and favor, and your visitation has preserved my spirit. ^10:13And these things you have hidden in your heart; I know that this is with you. ^10:14If I sin, then you mark me, and you will not acquit me from my iniquity. ^10:15If I am wicked, woe unto me; and if I am righteous, yet will I not lift up my head in pride. I am full of confusion; therefore see my affliction: ^10:16for it increases. You hunt me as a fierce lion; and again you show yourself marvelous upon me. ^10:17You renew your witnesses against me, and increase your indignation upon me; changes and war are against me. ^10:18Why then did you bring me forth out of the womb? Oh that I had given up the spirit, and no eye had seen me! ^10:19I should have been as though I had not been; I should have been carried from the womb to the grave. ^10:20Are not my days few? Cease, let me alone, that I may take comfort a little, ^10:21before I go where I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death: ^10:22a land of darkness, as darkness itself; and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is like darkness.’”

^11:5“But O that God would speak, and open his lips against you; ^11:6and that he would show you the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacts of you less than your iniquity deserves.”

^11:7“Can you by searching find out God? Can you find out the Almighty to perfection? ^11:8It is as high as Heaven. What can you do? It is deeper than Hell. What can you know? ^11:9Its measure is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea. ^11:10If he cuts off, and shuts up, or gathers together, then who can hinder him? ^11:11For he knows vain men; he also sees wickedness. Will he not then consider it? ^11:12For vain man wishes to be wise, though man is born like a wild donkey’s colt.

^1:4E iban sus hijos y hacían banquetes en sus casas, cada uno en su día; y enviaban a llamar a sus tres hermanas, para que comiesen y bebiesen con ellos.

^1:5Y acontecía que habiendo pasado en turno los días del convite, Job enviaba y los santificaba, y se levantaba de mañana y ofrecía holocaustos conforme al número de todos ellos: porque decía Job, “Quizá habrán pecado mis hijos, y habrán blasfemado a Dios en sus corazones”. De esta manera hacía todos los días.

^1:6Y un día vinieron los hijos de Dios a presentarse delante de Jehová, entre los cuales vino también Satanás. ^1:7Y dijo Jehová a Satanás, “¿De dónde vienes?”. Y respondiendo Satanás a Jehová, dijo, “De rodear la tierra y de andar por ella”. ^1:8Y Jehová dijo a Satanás, “¿No has considerado a mi siervo Job, que no hay otro como él en la tierra, varón perfecto y recto, temeroso de Dios y apartado del mal?”. ^1:9Y respondiendo Satanás a Jehová, dijo, “¿Teme Job a Dios de balde? ^1:10¿No le has tú cercado a él, y a su casa, y a todo lo que tiene en derredor? ^1:13Y aconteció un día que sus hijos e hijas estaban comiendo y bebiendo vino en casa de su hermano el primogénito, ^1:14y vino un mensajero a Job, y le dijo, “Estaban arando los bueyes, y las asnas paciendo cerca de ellos, ^1:15y acometieron los sabeos y los tomaron, y mataron a los criados a filo de espada; solamente escapé yo para traerte la noticia”. ^1:16Aún estaba éste hablando, y vino otro que dijo, “Fuego de Dios cayó del cielo, que quemó las ovejas y los criados, y los consumió; solamente escapé yo para traerte la noticia”. ^1:17Todavía estaba éste hablando, y vino otro que dijo, “Los caldeos hicieron tres escuadrones, y dieron sobre los camellos, y los tomaron, y mataron a los criados a filo de espada; solamente escapé yo para traerte la noticia”. ^1:18Entre tanto que éste hablaba, vino otro que dijo, “Tus hijos y tus hijas estaban comiendo y bebiendo vino en casa de su hermano el primogénito; ^1:19y he aquí un gran viento que vino del lado del desierto, y azotó las cuatro esquinas de la casa, y cayó sobre los jóvenes, y murieron; solamente escapé yo para traerte la noticia”. ^1:20Entonces Job se levantó, y rasgó su manto, y rasuró su cabeza, y cayendo en tierra adoró; ^1:21y dijo, “Desnudo salí del vientre de mi madre, y desnudo volveré allá. Jehová dio, y Jehová quitó; sea el Nombre de Jehová bendito”. ^1:22En todo esto no pecó Job, ni atribuyó a Dios despropósito alguno.

^2:1Y otro día aconteció que vinieron los hijos de Dios para presentarse delante de Jehová, y Satanás vino también entre ellos para presentarse delante de Jehová. ^2:2Y dijo Jehová a Satanás, “¿De dónde vienes?”. Respondió Satanás a Jehová, y dijo, “De rodear la tierra, y de andar por ella”. ^2:3Y Jehová dijo a Satanás, “¿No has considerado a mi siervo Job, que no hay otro como él en la tierra, varón perfecto y recto, temeroso de Dios y apartado del mal, y que aún retiene su integridad, a pesar de que tú me incitaste contra él para que lo arruinara sin causa?”. ^2:4Y respondiendo Satanás dijo a Jehová, “Piel por piel, todo lo que el hombre tiene dará por su vida. ^2:5Pero extiende ahora tu mano, y toca su hueso y su carne, y verás si no te maldice en tu rostro”. ^2:6Y Jehová dijo a Satanás, “He aquí, él está en tu mano; pero guarda su vida”.

^2:7Y salió Satanás de delante de Jehová, e hirió a Job de unas llagas malignas desde la planta de su pie hasta la coronilla de su cabeza. ^2:8Y tomó Job un tiesto para rascarse con él, y se sentó en medio de ceniza. ^2:9Entonces su esposa le dijo, “¿Aún retienes tu integridad? ¡Maldice a Dios, y muérete!”. ^2:10Y él le dijo, “Como suele hablar cualquiera de las mujeres fatuas, has hablado. ¿Qué? ¿Recibiremos de Dios el bien, y el mal no lo recibiremos?”. En todo esto no pecó Job con sus labios.

^2:11Y tres amigos de Job, Elifaz el temanita, Bildad el suhita, y Zofar el naamatita, luego que oyeron todo este mal que le había sobrevenido, vinieron cada uno de su lugar: porque habían concertado de venir juntos para condolerse de él y para consolarle. ^2:12Y cuando alzaron los ojos desde lejos y no lo conocieron, alzaron su voz, y lloraron; y cada uno de ellos rasgó su manto, y esparcieron polvo hacia el cielo sobre sus cabezas. ^2:13Así se sentaron con él en tierra por siete días y siete noches, y ninguno le hablaba palabra: porque veían que su dolor era muy grande.

^3:1Después de esto abrió Job su boca, y maldijo su día. ^3:2Y exclamó Job, y dijo, ^3:3“Perezca el día en que yo nací, y la noche en que se dijo, ‘Varón es concebido’. ^3:4Sea aquel día sombrío, y no cuide de él Dios desde arriba, ni claridad sobre él resplandezca. ^3:5Aféenlo tinieblas y sombra de muerte; repose sobre él nublado, que lo haga horrible como día caliginoso. ^3:6Ocupe la oscuridad aquella noche; no sea contada entre los días del año, ni venga en el número de los meses. ^3:7¡Oh, que fuera aquella noche solitaria, que no viniera canción alguna en ella! ^3:8Maldíganla los que maldicen el día, los que se aprestan para levantar su llanto. ^3:9Oscurézcanse las estrellas de su alba; espere la luz, y no venga, ni vea los párpados de la mañana, ^3:10por cuanto no cerró las puertas del vientre de mi madre, ni escondió de mis ojos la miseria.

^3:11“¿Por qué no morí yo en la matriz, o entregué el espíritu al salir del vientre? ^3:12¿Por qué me recibieron las rodillas? ¿Y para qué los pechos para que mamase? ^3:13Pues ahora yacería yo, y reposaría; dormiría, y entonces tendría reposo, ^3:14con los reyes y con los consejeros de la tierra, que edifican para sí lugares desolados; ^3:15o con los príncipes que poseían el oro, que llenaban sus casas de plata. ^3:16O ¿por qué no fui escondido como abortado, como los pequeñitos que nunca vieron la luz? ^3:17Allí los impíos dejan de perturbar, y allí descansan los de agotadas fuerzas. ^3:18Allí reposan juntos los cautivos; no oyen la voz del opresor. ^3:19Allí están el chico y el grande; y el siervo es libre de su señor”.

^3:20“¿Para qué se da luz al trabajado, y vida al amargado de alma, ^3:21que esperan la muerte, y ella no llega, aunque la buscan más que a tesoros enterrados; ^3:22que se alegran sobremanera, y se gozan, cuando hallan el sepulcro?

^3:23“¿Para qué se da luz al hombre que no sabe por dónde va, y al cual Dios ha acorralado? ^3:24Pues antes que mi pan viene mi suspiro; y mis gemidos corren como aguas.

^3:25“Porque el temor que me espantaba me ha venido, y me ha acontecido lo que yo temía. ^3:26No he tenido paz, no me aseguré, ni estuve reposado; no obstante me vino turbación”.

¶El complemento    Elifaz: Seguramente has pecado y Dios te está castigando (4:1 - 5:7)

^4:1Y respondió Elifaz el temanita, y dijo, ^4:2“Si probáremos a hablarte, te será molesto; pero, ¿quién podrá detener las palabras?

^4:3“He aquí, tú enseñabas a muchos, y las manos débiles corroborabas. ^4:4Al que tropezaba, enderezaban tus palabras, y esforzabas las rodillas que decaían.

^4:5“Pero ahora que el mal ha venido sobre ti, te desalientas; y cuando ha llegado hasta ti, te turbas. ^4:6¿Es éste tu temor, tu confianza, tu esperanza, y la integridad de tus caminos? ^4:7Recapacita ahora, ¿quién siendo inocente pereció? Y ¿en dónde los rectos fueron cortados? ^4:8Como yo he visto, los que aran iniquidad y siembran injuria, la siegan. ^4:9Perecen por el aliento de Dios, y por el soplo de su furor son consumidos. ^4:10El rugido del león, y la voz del león, y los dientes de los leoncillos son quebrantados. ^4:11El león viejo perece por falta de presa, y los hijos del león son dispersados”.

^4:12“El asunto también me era a mí oculto; pero mi oído ha percibido algo de ello. ^4:13En imaginaciones de visiones nocturnas, cuando el sueño cae sobre los hombres, ^4:14me sobrevino un espanto y un temblor, que estremeció todos mis huesos; ^4:15y un espíritu pasó por delante de mí, que hizo se erizara el pelo de mi carne. ^4:16Se paró un fantasma delante de mis ojos, cuyo rostro yo no conocí, y quedo, oí que decía, ^4:17‘¿Será el mortal más justo que Dios? ¿Será el hombre más puro que su Hacedor? ^4:18He aquí que en sus siervos no confía, y notó necedad en sus ángeles. ^4:19¡Cuánto más en los que habitan en casas de barro, cuyo fundamento está en el polvo, y que serán quebrantados por la polilla! ^4:20De la mañana a la tarde son destruidos, y se pierden para siempre, sin haber quien lo considere. ^4:21Su hermosura, ¿no se pierde con ellos mismos? Mueren, aun sin sabiduría’.

^5:1“Ahora, pues, da voces, si habrá quien te responda; ¿Y a cuál de los santos te volverás? ^5:2Es cierto que al necio lo mata la ira, y al codicioso lo consume la envidia. ^5:3Yo he visto al necio que echaba raíces, y en la misma hora maldije su habitación. ^5:4Sus hijos están lejos de la seguridad, en la puerta son quebrantados, y no hay quien los libre. ^5:5Su mies comen los hambrientos, y la sacan de entre los espinos, y el atracador devora su hacienda. ^5:6Porque la aflicción no sale del polvo, ni la molestia brota de la tierra. ^5:7Pero como las chispas se levantan para volar por el aire, así el hombre nace para la aflicción”.

¶El complemento    Elifaz: Usted debe arrepentirse y tener razón con Dios (5:8 - 27)

^5:8“Ciertamente yo buscaría a Dios, y encomendaría a él mi causa, ^5:9el cual hace cosas grandes e inescrutables, y maravillas sin número. ^5:10Que da la lluvia sobre la faz de la tierra, y envía las aguas sobre los campos; ^5:11que pone a los humildes en altura, y a los enlutados levanta a seguridad.

^5:12“Él frustra los pensamientos de los astutos, para que sus manos no hagan nada; ^5:13él prende a los sabios en la astucia de ellos, y entontece el consejo de los perversos; ^5:14de día tropiezan con tinieblas, y a medio día andan a tientas como de noche.

^5:15“Pero él libra de la espada al pobre, de la boca de los impíos, y de la mano violenta; ^5:16por tanto, el menesteroso tiene esperanza, y la iniquidad cierra su boca”.

^5:17“He aquí, bienaventurado es el hombre a quien Dios castiga; por tanto, no menosprecies la corrección del Todopoderoso: ^5:18porque él es quien hace la llaga, y él la vendará; él hiere, y sus manos curan. ^5:19En seis tribulaciones te librará, y en la séptima no te tocará el mal. ^5:20En el hambre te redimirá de la muerte, y en la guerra, del poder de la espada. ^5:21Del azote de la lengua serás encubierto; no temerás de la destrucción cuando viniere. ^5:22De la destrucción y del hambre te reirás, y no temerás de las fieras del campo; ^5:23pues aun con las piedras del campo tendrás alianza, y las fieras del campo tendrán paz contigo. ^5:24Y sabrás que hay paz en tu tienda; y visitarás tu morada, y no pecarás. ^5:25Asimismo echarás de ver que tu descendencia será numerosa, y tu prole como la hierba de la tierra. ^5:26Vendrás en la vejez a tu sepultura, como la gavilla de trigo que se recoge a su tiempo.

^5:27“He aquí lo que hemos inquirido, lo cual es así; óyelo, y conócelo tú para tu bien”.

^6:1Y respondió Job y dijo, ^6:2“¡Oh, que pudiesen pesar justamente mi sufrimiento, y lo pusiesen en balanza junto con mi calamidad! ^6:3Porque pesarían ahora más que la arena del mar; por tanto, mis palabras han sido precipitadas: ^6:4porque las saetas del Todopoderoso están en mí, cuyo veneno bebe mi espíritu; y terrores de Dios me combaten.

^6:5“¿Acaso gime el asno montés junto a la hierba? ¿Muge el buey junto a su pasto? ^6:6¿Se comerá lo desabrido sin sal? ¿O habrá gusto en la clara del huevo? ^6:7Las cosas que mi alma no quería tocar, son ahora mi triste alimento. ^6:8¡Quién me diera que viniese mi petición, y que me otorgase Dios lo que anhelo; ^6:9y que agradara a Dios destruirme; que desatara su mano, y acabara conmigo!

^6:10“Y sería aún mi consuelo, si me asaltase con dolor sin dar más tregua, que yo no he escondido las palabras del Santo. ^6:11¿Cuál es mi fuerza para esperar aún? ^6:12¿Y cuál mi fin para prolongar mi vida? ¿Es mi fuerza la de las piedras, o es mi carne de bronce? ^6:13¿No me ayudo a mí mismo, y el poder me falta del todo? ^6:14El atribulado ha de ser consolado por su compañero; pero se ha abandonado el temor del Omnipotente. ^6:15Mis hermanos han sido traicioneros cual arroyo; pasan como corrientes impetuosas, ^6:16que están escondidas por la helada, y encubiertas con nieve; ^6:17que al tiempo del calor son deshechas, y al calentarse, desaparecen de su lugar; ^6:18se apartan de la senda de su rumbo, van menguando y se pierden. ^6:19Miraron los caminantes de Tema, los caminantes de Seba esperaron en ellas. ^6:20Pero fueron avergonzados por su esperanza: porque vinieron hasta ellas, y se hallaron confusos. ^6:21Ahora ciertamente como ellas sois ustedes; pues habéis visto mi infortunio, y teméis. ^6:22¿Acaso yo os he dicho: ‘Traedme’, y ‘Pagad por mí de vuestra hacienda’; ^6:23‘Libradme de la mano del opresor’, y ‘Redimidme del poder de los violentos’? ^6:24Enseñadme, y yo callaré; y hacedme entender en qué he errado. ^6:25¡Cuán fuertes son las palabras rectas! Pero, ¿qué reprende vuestra censura? ^6:26¿Pensáis censurar las palabras, y los discursos de un desesperado, que son como el viento? ^6:27También os arrojáis sobre el huérfano, y caváis un hoyo para vuestro amigo”.

^6:28“Ahora, pues, si queréis, miradme, y ved si miento delante de ustedes. ^6:29Tornad ahora, y no haya iniquidad; volved aún a considerar mi justicia en esto. ^6:30¿Hay iniquidad en mi lengua? ¿No puede mi paladar discernir las cosas depravadas? ^7:1¿Acaso no hay un tiempo determinado para el hombre sobre la tierra? ¿No son sus días como los días del jornalero? ^7:2Como el siervo anhela la sombra, y como el jornalero espera la paga de su trabajo, ^7:3así he tenido que poseer meses de vanidad, y noches de congoja me fueron asignadas. ^7:4Cuando estoy acostado, digo, ‘¿Cuándo me levantaré, y se acabará la noche?’. Y estoy lleno de devaneos hasta el alba. ^7:5Mi carne está vestida de gusanos, y de costras de polvo; mi piel hendida y abominable. ^7:6Y mis días fueron más ligeros que la lanzadera del tejedor, y fenecieron sin esperanza. ^7:7Acuérdate que mi vida es un soplo, y que mis ojos no volverán a ver el bien. ^7:8Los ojos de los que me ven, no me verán más; fijarás en mí tus ojos, y dejaré de ser. ^7:9Como la nube se desvanece, y se va; así el que desciende al sepulcro ya no subirá; ^7:10no volverá más a su casa, ni su lugar le conocerá más.

^7:11“Por tanto yo no refrenaré mi boca; hablaré en la angustia de mi espíritu, y me quejaré con la amargura de mi alma. ^7:12¿Soy yo el mar, o ballena, para que me pongas guarda? ^7:13Cuando digo, ‘Me consolará mi cama, mi lecho atenuará mis quejas’, ^7:14entonces me aterras con sueños, y me turbas con visiones. ^7:15Y así mi alma tuvo por mejor el estrangulamiento y la muerte, más que la vida. ^7:16Desvanezco; no he de vivir para siempre; déjame, pues mis días son vanidad. ^7:17¿Qué es el hombre, para que lo engrandezcas, y para que pongas sobre él tu corazón, ^7:18y lo visites todas las mañanas, y a cada momento lo pruebes? ^7:19¿Hasta cuándo no te apartarás de mí, y no me soltarás ni siquiera para que trague mi saliva? ^7:20Pequé, ¿qué te hago yo, oh Guarda de los hombres? ¿Por qué me has puesto como blanco tuyo, de modo que soy una carga para mí mismo? ^7:21¿Y por qué no perdonas mi rebelión, y quitas mi iniquidad? Porque ahora dormiré en el polvo, y si me buscares de mañana, ya no estaré”.

^8:1Y respondió Bildad el suhita, y dijo, ^8:2“¿Hasta cuándo hablarás tales cosas, y las palabras de tu boca serán como un viento impetuoso?

^8:3“¿Acaso pervertirá Dios el derecho, o el Todopoderoso pervertirá la justicia? ^8:4Si tus hijos pecaron contra él, él los echó en el lugar de su pecado. ^8:5Si tú de mañana buscares a Dios, y suplicares al Todopoderoso; ^8:6si fueres limpio y recto, ciertamente luego se despertará por ti, y hará próspera la morada de tu justicia. ^8:7Aunque tu principio haya sido pequeño, tu postrimería será muy grande”.

^8:8“Porque pregunta ahora a la edad pasada, y disponte a inquirir de los padres de ellos: ^8:9porque nosotros somos de ayer y nada sabemos, pues nuestros días sobre la tierra son como una sombra. ^8:10¿No te enseñarán ellos, te hablarán, y de su corazón sacarán palabras? ^8:11¿Crece el junco sin lodo? ¿Crece el prado sin agua? ^8:12Aun en su verdor, y sin ser cortado, se seca antes que toda hierba.

^8:13“Tales son los caminos de todos los que se olvidan de Dios; y la esperanza del impío perecerá: ^8:14porque su esperanza será cortada, y aquello en que confía será tela de araña. ^8:15Se apoyará él sobre su casa, pero no permanecerá; se asirá de ella, pero no resistirá. ^8:16A manera de un árbol, está verde delante del sol, y sus renuevos salen sobre su huerto; ^8:17sus raíces se entretejen junto a una fuente, y se enlazan hasta un lugar pedregoso. ^8:18Si le arrancaren de su lugar, éste le negará entonces, diciendo, ‘Nunca te vi’. ^8:19He aquí éste es el gozo de su camino; y de la tierra brotarán otros.

^8:20“He aquí, Dios no desechará al perfecto, ni tampoco ayudará a los malhechores. ^8:21Aún llenará tu boca de risa, y tus labios de júbilo. ^8:22Los que te aborrecen, serán vestidos de vergüenza; y la habitación de los impíos perecerá”.

^9:13“Si Dios no retira su ira, los ayudadores soberbios serán abatidos debajo de él. ^9:14¿Cuánto menos le responderé yo, y hablaré con él palabras escogidas? ^9:15Aunque fuese yo justo, no respondería; antes habría de rogar a mi Juez. ^9:16Que si yo le invocara, y él me respondiese, aún no creeré que haya escuchado mi voz: ^9:17porque me ha quebrantado con tempestad, y sin causa ha aumentado mis heridas. ^9:18No me ha concedido que tome aliento, sino que me ha llenado de amarguras. ^9:19Si yo hablare de poder, he aquí él es poderoso; si de juicio, ¿quién me emplazará? ^9:20Si yo me justificare, me condenaría mi boca; si me dijere perfecto, esto me haría inicuo. ^9:21Bien que yo fuese íntegro, no conocería mi alma; despreciaría mi vida”.

^9:22“Una cosa resta que yo diga, ‘Al perfecto y al impío él los consume’. ^9:23Si el azote mata de repente, se ríe del sufrimiento de los inocentes. ^9:24La tierra es entregada en manos de los impíos, y él cubre el rostro de sus jueces. Si no es él, ¿quién es? ¿Dónde está?

^9:25“Mis días son más ligeros que un correo; Huyen, y no ven el bien. ^9:26Pasan cual naves veloces: como el águila que se lanza sobre su presa. ^9:27Si digo, ‘Olvidaré mi queja, dejaré mi triste semblante y me esforzaré; ^9:28entonces me turban todos mis dolores’, sé que no me tendrás por inocente. ^9:29Si soy impío, ¿Para qué, pues, trabajaré en vano? ^9:30Aunque me lave con aguas de nieve, y limpie mis manos con la limpieza misma, ^9:31aún me hundirás en el hoyo, y mis propias vestiduras me abominarán: ^9:32porque él no es hombre igual que yo, para que yo le responda, y vengamos juntamente a juicio. ^9:33Ni hay entre nosotros árbitro, que ponga su mano sobre ambos. ^9:34Quite de sobre mí su vara, y su terror no me espante. ^9:35Entonces yo hablaría, y no le temería; pero no es así conmigo.

^10:1“Mi alma está hastiada de mi vida; daré yo rienda suelta a mi queja sobre mí; hablaré en la amargura de mi alma. ^10:2Diré a Dios, ‘No me condenes; hazme entender por qué contiendes conmigo. ^10:3¿Te parece bien que oprimas, que deseches la obra de tus manos, y que resplandezcas sobre el consejo de los impíos? ^10:4¿Acaso tienes tú ojos de carne? ¿Ves tú como ve el hombre? ^10:5¿Son tus días como los días del hombre, o tus años como los tiempos humanos, ^10:6para que inquieras mi iniquidad, y busques mi pecado? ^10:7Tú sabes que no soy impío, y que no hay quien libre de tu mano. ^10:8Tus manos me hicieron y me formaron, ¿y luego te vuelves y me deshaces? ^10:9Acuérdate ahora que como a barro me diste forma. ¿Y en polvo me has de tornar? ^10:10¿No me vaciaste como leche, y como queso me cuajaste? ^10:11Me vestiste de piel y carne, y me rodeaste de huesos y nervios. ^10:12Vida y misericordia me concediste, y tu cuidado guardó mi espíritu. ^10:13Estas cosas has guardado en tu corazón; yo sé que están cerca de ti. ^10:14Si peco, tú me observas, y no me tienes por limpio de mi iniquidad. ^10:15Si fuere malo, ¡ay de mí! Y si fuere justo, no levantaré mi cabeza. Estoy hastiado de afrenta, por tanto, mira tú mi aflicción. ^10:16Si levanto mi cabeza, me cazas como a león, y vuelves a mostrarte maravilloso sobre mí. ^10:17Renuevas contra mí tus pruebas, y aumentas conmigo tu furor como tropas de relevo. ^10:18¿Por qué me sacaste de la matriz? Hubiera yo entregado el espíritu, y ningún ojo me habría visto. ^10:19Fuera como si nunca hubiera existido, llevado del vientre a la sepultura. ^10:20¿No son pocos mis días? Cesa, pues, y déjame, para que me conforte un poco. ^10:21Antes que vaya para no volver, a la tierra de tinieblas y de sombra de muerte; ^10:22tierra de oscuridad, lóbrega como sombra de muerte, sin orden, donde la luz es como la oscuridad misma’”.

¶El complemento    Zofar: Dios es tan grande que conoce los pecados en tu vida que tú no (11:1 - 20)

^11:1Y respondió Zofar el naamatita, y dijo, ^11:2“¿Las muchas palabras no han de tener respuesta? ¿Y el hombre que habla mucho será justificado? ^11:3¿Harán tus falacias callar a los hombres? ¿Y harás escarnio, y no habrá quien te avergüence? ^11:4Tú dices, ‘Mi doctrina es pura, y soy limpio delante de tus ojos’.

^11:5“Pero ¡oh quién diera que Dios hablara, y abriera sus labios contra ti, ^11:6y que te declarara los secretos de la sabiduría, que son de doble valor que las riquezas! Conocerías entonces que Dios te ha castigado menos de lo que tu iniquidad merece”.

^11:7“Si escudriñas, ¿podrás entender a Dios? ¿Llegarás tú a la perfección del Todopoderoso? ^11:8Es más alta que los Cielos. ¿Qué harás? Es más profunda que el Infierno. ¿Cómo la conocerás? ^11:9Su dimensión es más extensa que la tierra, y más ancha que el mar. ^11:10Si él corta, o aprisiona, o si congrega, ¿quién podrá contrarrestarle? ^11:11Porque él conoce a los hombres vanos; ve asimismo la iniquidad, ¿y no hará caso? ^11:12El hombre vano se hará entendido, aunque nazca como el pollino del asno montés.

^11:13“Si tú apercibieres tu corazón, y extendieres a él tus manos; ^11:14si alguna iniquidad hubiere en tu mano, y la echares de ti, y no consintieres que more maldad en tus habitaciones; ^11:15entonces levantarás tu rostro limpio de mancha, y serás fuerte, y no temerás; ^11:16y olvidarás tu miseria, o te acordarás de ella como de aguas que pasaron; ^11:17y tu existencia será más clara que el mediodía; resplandecerás, y serás como la mañana; ^11:18estarás confiado: porque hay esperanza; mirarás alrededor, y dormirás seguro. ^11:19Te acostarás, y no habrá quien te espante; y muchos implorarán tu favor.

^11:20“Pero los ojos de los malos se consumirán, y no tendrán refugio; y su esperanza será como el dar el último suspiro”.
