Spiritual Maturity, Chapter 2.3: Keep a light hold on the things of this world (8:1 - 9:15)

Introduction: The Assemblies of Macedonia followed the example of the Lord in giving everything they had for the sake of others (8:1 - 9)

¶Opposite   The Assemblies of Macedonia begged Paul to allow them to contribute financial gifts to the Assembly in Jerusalem (8:1 - 7)

¶Opposite   Jesus willingly gave Himself to die on the cross and rise again from the dead, so that we through his poverty might be rich (8:8 - 9)

Body: Openness and honesty with money are important to establish trust among the saints of God (8:10 - 9:5)

¶Opposite   It would be beneficial for you to now give, as you were willing to do a year ago (8:10 - 12)

¶Opposite   Your abundance may be a supply for their need, and their abundance may be a supply for your need (8:13 - 15)

¶Complement   The Assemblies chose a trusted brother in Christ to accompany Titus with the financial gift to ensure openness and transparency in the sight of all (8:16 - 21)

¶Complement   Titus and the two trusted brothers in Christ are considered the messengers of the Assemblies and the glory of Christ (8:22 - 24)

¶Unique    I have sent these brethren to go before us, so that you will be prepared with the financial gift when we arrive (9:1 - 5)

Conclusion: Voluntary love offerings to other Assemblies brings glory to God and increases brotherly love among the saints of God (9:6 - 15)

^8:1Moreover, brethren, we make known to you the grace of God bestowed on the Assemblies of Macedonia: ^8:2how that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded to the riches of their generosity.

^8:3For according to their ability, I bear witness, indeed, even beyond their ability they were willing of themselves; ^8:4asking us with much urgency that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints.

^8:5And they did this, not as we expected, but they first gave their own selves to the Lord; and to us, by the will of God.

^8:6Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also finish in you the same grace also.

^8:7Therefore, as you abound in every thing: in faith, utterance, knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us; see that you abound in this grace also.

^8:8I speak not by command;

but by occasion of the eagerness of others, and to test the sincerity of your love.

^8:9For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich,

yet for your sakes he became poor,

that you, through his poverty, might be rich.

¶Opposite   It would be beneficial for you to now give, as you were willing to do a year ago (8:10 - 12)

^8:10And herein I give my advice: for this is beneficial for you, who have begun before;

not only to do,

but also to be willing to begin more than a year ago.

^8:11Now therefore perform the doing of it, that as there was a readiness to will, so there may be a performance also out of that which you have:

^8:12for if there is first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man has, and not according to what he does not have.

¶Opposite   Your abundance may be a supply for their need, and their abundance may be a supply for your need (8:13 - 15)

^8:13For I do not mean that other men be eased, and you burdened;

^8:14but by an equality:

that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their need;

that their abundance also may be a supply for your need;

that there may be equality: ^8:15as it is written, “He that had gathered much had nothing left over; and he that had gathered little had no lack.”

¶Complement   The Assemblies chose a trusted brother in Christ to accompany Titus with the financial gift to ensure openness and transparency in the sight of all (8:16 - 21)

^8:16But thanks to God, who put the same earnest care into the heart of Titus for you: ^8:17for indeed he accepted the exhortation; but being more eager, of his own accord he went to you.

^8:18And we have sent with him the brother, whose praise in the Gospel is known throughout all the Assemblies.

^8:19And not only that, but he was also chosen by the Assemblies to travel with us with this grace, which is administered by us to the glory of the same Lord, and declaration of your ready mind.

^8:20Avoiding this, that no man should blame us in this abundance which is administered by us;

^8:21providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.

¶Complement   Titus and the two trusted brothers in Christ are considered the messengers of the Assemblies and the glory of Christ (8:22 - 24)

^8:22And we have sent with them our brother, whom we have oftentimes proved diligent in many things, but now much more diligent upon the great confidence which I have in you.

^8:23If anyone inquires of Titus, he is my partner and fellow-helper concerning you;

or if our brethren are inquired of, they are the messengers of the Assemblies, and the glory of Christ.

^8:24Therefore show them, and before the Assemblies, the proof of your love;

and of our boasting on your behalf.

¶Unique   I have sent these brethren to go before us, so that you will be prepared with the financial gift when we arrive (9:1 - 5)

^9:1For as touching the ministering to the saints, it is needless for me to write to you:

^9:2for I know the eagerness of your mind, for which I boast of you to them of Macedonia, that Achaia was ready to give a year ago; and your zeal has inspired very many.

^9:3Yet I have sent the brethren, lest our boasting of you should be in vain in this behalf, that, as I said, you may be ready;

^9:4lest perhaps if they of Macedonia come with me, and find you unprepared, we (that we do not say, you) should be ashamed in this same confident boasting.

^9:5Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren, that they would go before to you, and make up beforehand your bounty, of which you had notice before; that the same might be ready, as a matter of bounty, and not as of covetousness.

^9:8And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, so that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: ^9:9as it is written, “He has dispersed abroad; he has given to the poor; his righteousness remains forever.”

^9:10Now he that ministers seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown; and increase the fruits of your righteousness: ^9:11being enriched in everything to all bountifulness;

which causes through us thanksgiving to God.

^9:12For the administration of this service not only supplies the need of the saints,

but is abundant also by many thanksgivings to God.

^9:13While by the experiment of this ministry, they glorify God for your professed subjection to the Gospel of Christ, and for your generous distribution to them, and to all; ^9:14and by their prayer for you, who long after you for the exceeding grace of God in you. ^9:15Thank God for his unspeakable gift.

^8:3Porque de su voluntad han dado conforme a sus fuerzas, yo testifico, y aun más allá de sus fuerzas; ^8:4pidiéndonos con muchos ruegos que aceptásemos la ofrenda y la comunicación del servicio para los santos.

^8:5Y esto hicieron, no como lo esperábamos, sino que primero se dieron a sí mismos al Señor, y a nosotros por la voluntad de Dios.

^8:6De manera que exhortamos a Tito, que como comenzó, así también acabe esta gracia entre ustedes también.

^8:7Por tanto, como en todo abundáis, en fe, y en palabra, y en ciencia, y en toda solicitud, y en vuestro amor para con nosotros, mirad que también abundéis en esta gracia.

^8:8No hablo como quien manda;

sino por causa de la diligencia de otros, y para probar la sinceridad de vuestro amor:

^8:9porque ya conocéis la gracia de nuestro Señor Jesús Cristo, que aunque era rico,

todavía para amor de ustedes se hizo pobre,

que ustedes, a través de la pobreza de él, podrías llegar a ser rico.

^8:12porque si primero hay la disposición, será acepta según lo que uno tiene, no según lo que no tiene.

¶Lo opuesto    Vuestra abundancia puede ser un suministro para las necesidades de ellos, y su abundancia puede ser un suministro para vuestras necesidades (8:13 - 15)

^8:13Pero no digo esto para que haya abundancia para otros, y para ustedes escasez;

^8:14que puede haber igualdad:

ahora en este tiempo, vuestra abundancia supla lo que a ellos falta,

para que también la abundancia de ellos supla lo que a ustedes falta;

que puede haber igualdad: ^8:15como está escrito, “El que recogió mucho, no tuvo más; y el que poco, no tuvo menos”.

¶El complemento    Las Asambleas eligieron un hermano en Cristo, en quien confiaba, para acompañar a Tito con el don financiero para garantizar la apertura y la transparencia a la vista de todos (8:16 - 21)

^8:16Pero gracias sean dadas a Dios, que puso en el corazón de Tito la misma solicitud por ustedes. ^8:17Pues a la verdad aceptó la exhortación; pero estando también muy solícito, de su voluntad partió para ir a ustedes.

^8:18Y enviamos juntamente con él al hermano cuya alabanza en el Evangelio es por todas las Asambleas.

^8:19Y no sólo esto, sino también fue escogido por las Asambleas para viajar con nosotros con esta gracia, que es administrada por nosotros para gloria del Señor mismo, y para demostrar vuestra buena disposición.

^8:20Evitando que nadie nos difame en esta abundancia que administramos;

^8:21procurando hacer lo honesto, no sólo delante del Señor, sino también delante de los hombres.

¶El complemento    Tito y los dos hermanos en Cristo son considerados los mensajeros de las Asambleas y la gloria de Cristo (8:22 - 24)

^8:22Y enviamos con ellos a nuestro hermano, la diligencia del cual hemos comprobado muchas veces en muchas cosas, y ahora mucho más diligente por la mucha confianza que tengo en ustedes.

^8:23Si alguno preguntare acerca de Tito, él es mi compañero y colaborador para con ustedes;

o acerca de nuestros hermanos; son mensajeros de las Asambleas, y la gloria de Cristo.

^8:24Mostrad, pues, para con ellos y ante las Asambleas la prueba de vuestro amor;

y de nuestro gloriarnos acerca de ustedes.

¶Único    Envié a estos hermanos para que nos precedieran, para que estén preparados con el regalo financiero cuando lleguemos (9:1 - 5)

^9:1Pero en cuanto a la suministración para los santos, por demás me es escribiros;

^9:2pues conozco vuestra buena disposición, de la cual me glorío entre los de Macedonia, que Acaya está preparada desde el año pasado; y vuestro celo ha estimulado a muchos.

^9:3Pero he enviado a los hermanos, para que nuestra gloria de ustedes no sea vana en esta parte; para que, como lo he dicho, estéis preparados;

^9:4no sea que si vinieren conmigo los de Macedonia, y os hallaren desprevenidos, nos avergoncemos nosotros, por no decir ustedes, de este firme gloriar.

^9:5Por lo tanto, tuve por necesario exhortar a los hermanos que fuesen primero a ustedes, y hacer de antemano su generosidad, de la que tenías antes de preaviso; que el mismo esté aparejada como de bendición, y no como de mezquindad.

§El complemento   Conclusión: Las ofrendas voluntarias de amor a otras Asambleas traen gloria a Dios y aumentan el amor fraternal entre los santos de Dios (9:6 - 15)

^9:8Y poderoso es Dios para hacer que abunde en ustedes toda gracia; a fin de que, teniendo siempre toda suficiencia en todas las cosas, abundéis para toda buena obra; ^9:9como está escrito, “Esparció, dio a los pobres; su justicia permanece para siempre”.

¶El complemento    Esta ofrenda de amor trae gloria a Dios y aumenta el amor fraternal entre los santos de Dios (9:10 - 15)

^9:10Y el que da semilla al que siembra, también dará pan para comer, y multiplicará vuestra sementera, y aumentará los frutos de vuestra justicia; ^9:11para que enriquecidos en todo abundéis en toda liberalidad,

la cual produce por medio de nosotros agradecimiento a Dios.

^9:12porque la suministración de este servicio, suple no sólo lo que a los santos falta,

sino también abunda en muchas acciones de gracias a Dios.

^9:13Pues por la experiencia de esta suministración glorifican a Dios por la obediencia que profesáis al Evangelio de Cristo, y por vuestra liberal contribución para ellos y para todos; ^9:14y por la oración de ellos a favor vuestro, los cuales os quieren a causa de la supereminente gracia de Dios en ustedes. ^9:15Gracias a Dios por su don inefable.
