Romans, Chapter 2.3: The daily sanctification of believers through the Holy Spirit (6:1 - 8:39)

Introduction: Yield your bodies in obedience to God to have victory over sin (6:1 - 23)

¶Opposite   After salvation, yield your bodies to be baptized by immersion, to walk in the likeness of his resurrection (6:1 - 7)

Body: The Holy Spirit gives life and peace to the believer and guarantees his resurrection to Eternal Life (7:1 - 8:27)

^6:1What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, so that grace may abound? ^6:2Certainly not; how shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer in it?

^6:3Do you not know, that as many of us as were baptized with reference to Jesus Christ were baptized as a sign of his death? ^6:4Therefore we were buried with him by baptism with reference to death, that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of Life.

^6:5For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall also walk in the likeness of his resurrection.

^6:6Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin:

^6:7for he that is dead has been freed from sin.

^6:8Now if we are dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him, ^6:9knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dies no more; death has no more dominion over him: ^6:10for in that he died, he died unto sin once; but in that he lives, he lives unto God. ^6:11Likewise consider yourselves also to be dead indeed to sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

^6:12Therefore, let not sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts; ^6:13neither yield your body parts as instruments of unrighteousness to sin ; but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your body parts as instruments of righteousness unto God. ^6:14For sin shall not rule over you: for you are not under the Law of Moses, but under grace.

^6:15What then? Shall we sin, because we are not under the Law, but under grace? Certainly not. ^6:16Do you not know, that to whom you yield yourselves servants to obey, you are his servants to whom you obey: whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? ^6:17But thanks to God, that you were the servants of sin; but you have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. ^6:18Being then made free from sin, you became the servants of righteousness.

^6:19I speak after the manner of men, because of the weakness of your flesh: for as you have yielded your body parts servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity, even so now yield your body parts as servants to righteousness unto holiness. ^6:20For when you were the servants of sin, you were free from righteousness.

^6:21What fruit then did you have in those things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. ^6:22But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, you have your fruit unto holiness, and the end Everlasting Life: ^6:23for the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is Eternal Life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

^7:1Do you not know, brethren (for I speak to them that know the Law), how that the Law rules over a man as long as he lives?

^7:2For the woman which has a husband is bound by the Law to her husband as long as he lives; but if the husband is dead, she is released from the Law of her husband.

^7:3So then if, while her husband is living, she is married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress; but if her husband is dead, she is free from that Law, so that she is no adulteress, although she is married to another man.

^7:4Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the Law by the body of Christ, that you should be married to another, even to him who was raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit to God: ^7:5for when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the Law, worked in our body parts to bring forth fruit unto death.

^7:6But now we have been delivered from the Law, that being dead in which we were held, that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

^7:7What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? Certainly not. I did not know sin, but through the Law: for I would not have known lust, except the Law had said, “You shall not covet.” ^7:8But sin, taking occasion by the Commandment, produced all manner of evil desire in me. For apart from the Law sin was dead: ^7:9for I was alive once as an infant apart from the Law; but when I learned the Commandment, sin revived, and I died spiritually. ^7:10And the Commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death: ^7:11for sin, taking occasion by the Commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me. ^7:12Therefore the Law is holy; and the Commandment is holy, and just, and good.

^7:13Was then that which is good made death to me? Certainly not; but sin, so that it might appear as sin, working death in me by that which is good, so that sin by the Commandment might become exceedingly sinful: ^7:14for we know that the Law is spiritual; but I am carnal, sold as a slave to sin. ^7:15For that which I do I do not understand: for what I wish to do, that is what I do not do; but what I hate, that is what I find myself doing. ^7:16If then I do that which I do not wish to do, I agree with the Law that it is good. ^7:17So then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwells in me. ^7:18For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh), dwells nothing good: for to will is present with me, but how to perform that which is good I do not find. ^7:19For the good that I want to do, I do not do it; but the evil that I do not wish to do, that is what I find myself doing. ^7:20So if I do that which I do not wish to do, it is no longer I that am doing it, but sin that dwells in me.

^7:21I find therefore concerning the Law, that when I desire to do good, evil is always present with me: ^7:22for I delight in the Law of God according to the inward man; ^7:23but I see another law in my body parts, making war against the Law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my body parts.

^7:24O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from this dead body? ^7:25I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

So then with the mind I myself serve the Law of God; but with the flesh I serve the law of sin.

^8:1There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit: ^8:2for the Law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the Law of sin and death: ^8:3for what the Law of Moses could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh, ^8:4so that the righteousness of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

^8:5For they that walk according to the flesh think about the things of the flesh; but they that walk according to the Spirit think about the things of the Spirit. ^8:6For having a carnal mind is death; but having a spiritual mind is life and peace.

^8:7Because the fleshly mind is hatred against God: for it is not subject to the Law of God; neither indeed can it be.

^8:8So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

^8:9But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if it is true that the Spirit of God dwells in you.

¶Complement   The Holy Spirit dwells in the body of the Believer in Jesus Christ to give Eternal Life before and after death (8:9b - 13)

Now if any man does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not of his children.

^8:10And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is Life because of righteousness.

^8:11But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwells in you.

^8:12Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, but not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh: ^8:13for if you live according to the flesh, you shall die;

but if, through the Spirit, you are constantly mortifying the deeds of the body, you shall live.

¶Unique   The Holy Spirit helps the Believer to pray in spite of his infirmities (8:14 - 27)

^8:14For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God: ^8:15for you have not received the spirit of slavery again to fear; but you have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, “Papa, Father!” ^8:16The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God; ^8:17and if we are children, then we are heirs: heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ (if it is true that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together).

^8:18For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us: ^8:19for the earnest expectation of the creation waits for the manifestation of the sons of God. ^8:20For the creation was made subject to vanity: not of its own will, but by reason of him who has subjected the same in hope, ^8:21because the creation itself also shall be delivered from the slavery of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

^8:22For we know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain together until now; ^8:23and not only the creation, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, namely, the redemption of our body.

^8:24For we were saved in hope; but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man sees, why does he still hope for it? ^8:25But if we hope for that which we do not see, then do we with patience wait for it.

^8:26Likewise the Spirit also helps our infirmities: for we do not know what we should pray for as we should; but the Spirit itself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. ^8:27And he that searches the hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because he makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

^8:31What shall we then say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

^8:32He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

^8:33Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect? It is God who declares us righteous.

^8:34Who is he that condemns? It is Christ who died for our sins; but more than that, was raised again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

^8:35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? ^8:36As it is written, “For your sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” ^8:37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us: ^8:38for I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,^8:39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

^6:15¿Qué, pues? ¿Pecaremos porque no estamos bajo la Ley, sino bajo la gracia? ¡Ciertamente no! ^6:16¿No sabéis que a quienes os sometéis mismos como siervos para obedecer, ustedes sois sus siervos a quienes obedecéis: ya sea del pecado hasta muerte, o de la obediencia hasta justicia? ^6:17Pero gracias hasta Dios, que ustedes erais los siervos del pecado; sino habéis obedecido desde corazón la forma de doctrina que os fue entregada. ^6:18Siendo entonces hechos libres del pecado, ustedes se convirtieron en los siervos de la justicia.

^6:19Hablo según la manera de los hombres, por causa de la debilidad de vuestra carne; porque como habéis entregado los miembros de vuestro cuerpo como siervos a la iniquidad hasta la iniquidad, aun así ahora sometáis los miembros de vuestro cuerpo como siervos a la justicia hasta la santidad: ^6:20porque cuando erais esclavos del pecado, fuisteis libres de la justicia.

^6:21¿Qué fruto entonces teníais en aquellas cosas de las que ahora os avergonzáis? Porque el fin de esas cosas es la muerte. ^6:22Pero ahora, siendo hecho libre desde el pecado y convertirse en siervos a Dios, tenéis vuestro fruto hasta la santidad, y el fin la Vida Eterna: ^6:23porque la paga del pecado es muerte; pero el don de Dios es Vida Eterna a través de Cristo Jesús Señor nuestro.

^7:4Así también ustedes mis hermanos, habéis muerto a la Ley por el cuerpo de Cristo; para que seáis de otro, de Aquél que resucitó de entre los muertos, a fin de que llevemos fruto para Dios: ^7:5porque cuando estábamos en la carne, la influencia del pecado, que era por la Ley, obraba en nuestros miembros llevando fruto para muerte.

^7:6Pero ahora hemos sido liberados desde la Ley, habiendo muerto a lo que nos tenía sujetos, para que sirvamos en novedad de espíritu, y no en lo antiguo de la letra.

Al contrario, yo no hubiera conocido el pecado a no ser por la Ley: porque no conociera la codicia si la Ley no dijera, “No codiciarás”. ^7:8Pero el pecado, tomando ocasión por el Mandamiento, produjo en mí toda codicia: porque sin la Ley el pecado estaba muerto. ^7:9Y antes yo vivía sin ley, pero cuando vino el Mandamiento, el pecado revivió y yo morí. ^7:10Y el Mandamiento que era para vida, yo encontré que era para muerte: ^7:11porque el pecado, tomando ocasión por el Mandamiento, me engañó, y por él me mató. ^7:12De manera que la Ley a la verdad es santa, y el Mandamiento es santo, y justo, y bueno.

^7:13¿Entonces lo que es bueno, vino a ser muerte para mí? ¡En ninguna manera! Pero el pecado, para mostrarse pecado, obró muerte en mí por lo que es bueno, a fin de que por el Mandamiento, el pecado llegase a ser sobremanera pecaminoso: ^7:14porque sabemos que la Ley es espiritual; pero soy carnal, vendido bajo pecado. ^7:15Pues lo que hago, no lo entiendo, pues no hago lo que quiero; sino lo que aborrezco, eso hago. ^7:16Y si lo que no quiero, eso hago, apruebo que la Ley es buena. ^7:17De manera que ya no soy yo quien lo hace, sino el pecado que mora en mí. ^7:18Y yo sé que en mí (esto es en mi carne) no mora el bien; pues el querer está en mí, pero el hacer el bien no: ^7:19porque no hago el bien que quiero, sino el mal que no quiero, éste hago. ^7:20Y si hago lo que no quiero, ya no soy yo quien lo hace, sino el pecado que mora en mí.

^7:21Encuentro, por lo tanto, con respecto a la Ley, que cuando deseo hacer el bien, el mal siempre está presente conmigo: ^7:22porque me deleito en la ley de Dios después del hombre interior; ^7:23pero veo otra ley en las partes de mi cuerpo, haciendo guerra contra la ley de mi mente, y llevándome en cautiverio a la ley del pecado que está en las partes de mi cuerpo.

^7:24¡Oh, miserable hombre que soy! ¿Quién me librará desde este cuerpo muerto? ^7:25Agradezco a Dios a través de Jesucristo nuestro Señor.

Así que, con la mente, yo mismo sirvo a la Ley de Dios; pero con la carne sirvo a la ley del pecado.

^8:5porque los que andan conforme a la carne, piensan acerca las cosas de la carne; pero los que andan conforme el Espíritu piensan acerca las cosas del Espíritu: ^8:6porque teniendo una mente carnal es la muerte, pero teniendo una mente espiritual es vida y paz.

^8:7Porque la mente carnal es enemistad contra Dios: porque no se sujeta a la Ley de Dios, ni tampoco puede.

^8:8Así que, los que están en la carne no pueden agradar a Dios.

^8:9Pero ustedes no estáis en la carne, sino en el Espíritu, si es que el Espíritu de Dios mora en ustedes.

¶El complemento   El Espíritu Santo habita en el cuerpo del Creyente en Jesucristo para garantizar su resurrección a la Vida Eterna (8:9b - 13)

Ahora bien, si alguno no tiene el Espíritu de Cristo, él no es de sus hijos.

^8:10Y si Cristo está en ustedes, el cuerpo está muerto por causa del pecado, pero el Espíritu es Vida por causa de la justicia.

^8:11Pero si el Espíritu de él quien resucitó a Jesús de entre los muertos habita en ustedes, el que levantó a Cristo desde los muertos también vivificará sus cuerpos mortales por su Espíritu que habita en ustedes.

^8:12Por lo tanto, hermanos, somos deudores, pero no para la carne, para vivir según la carne: ^8:13porque si vives según la carne, moriréis;

sino si, a través del Espíritu, estáis mortificando constantemente las obras de la carne, viviréis.

¶Único   El Espíritu Santo ayuda al creyente a orar a pesar de sus debilidades (8:14 - 27)

^8:14Porque tantos como son guiados por el Espíritu de Dios, son los hijos de dios: ^8:15porque no habéis recibido el espíritu de servidumbre para estar otra vez en temor, sino habéis recibido el Espíritu de adopción, por el cual clamamos, “¡Abba Padre!”. ^8:16El Espíritu mismo da testimonio a nuestro espíritu que somos hijos de Dios; ^8:17y si somos hijos, también somos herederos: herederos de Dios, y coherederos con Cristo (si es cierto que sufrimos con él, para que también podemos ser glorificados juntos).

^8:18Porque considero que los sufrimientos de este tiempo presente no son dignos ser comparados con la gloria que será revelada en nosotros: ^8:19porque la ferviente expectativa de la creación espera por la manifestación de los hijos de Dios. ^8:20Porque la creación fue sujetada a vanidad: no de su propia voluntad, sino por causa de Aquél quien ha sujetado lo mismo en esperanza, ^8:21porque la creación misma también será librada desde la esclavitud de la corrupción en a la gloriosa libertad de los hijos de Dios.

^8:22Porque sabemos que toda la creación gime a una, y está en dolores de parto hasta ahora; ^8:23y no sólo ella, sino que también nosotros que tenemos las primicias del Espíritu, nosotros también gemimos dentro de nosotros mismos, esperando la adopción, esto es, la redención de nuestro cuerpo.

^8:24Porque en esperanza somos salvos; pero la esperanza que se ve no es esperanza, pues lo que uno ve ¿por qué esperarlo aún? ^8:25Pero si lo que no vemos esperamos, con paciencia lo esperamos.

^8:26Y de la misma manera, también el Espíritu nos ayuda en nuestra debilidad; pues qué hemos de pedir como conviene, no lo sabemos; pero el Espíritu mismo intercede por nosotros con gemidos indecibles. ^8:27Y el que escudriña los corazones sabe cuál es la intención del Espíritu: porque conforme a la voluntad de Dios intercede por los santos.

^8:28Y sabemos que todas las cosas funcionan juntas para bien, a los que aman a Dios, a los quienes son llamados según su propósito.

^8:29Para aquellos a quienes él conocía de antemano, él también los predestinó ellos ser conformados a la imagen de su Hijo, que él sea el primogénito entre muchos hermanos.

^8:30Además, los quienes él predestinó, a ellos también él llamó;

y los quienes él llamó, a los quienes también él justificó;

y quienes él justificó, a ellos también él glorificó.

¶El complemento   Nada en este mundo puede separar al creyente desde el amor de Cristo (8:31 - 39)

^8:31¿Qué, pues, diremos a esto? Si Dios por nosotros, ¿quién contra nosotros?

^8:32El que no escatimó ni a su propio Hijo, sino que lo entregó por todos nosotros, ¿cómo no nos dará también con él todas las cosas?

^8:33¿Quién acusará a los escogidos de Dios? Dios es el que justifica.

^8:34¿Quién es el que condenará? Cristo es el que murió, y más aun, el que también resucitó, el que además está a la diestra de Dios, el que también intercede por nosotros.

^8:35¿Quién nos separará del amor de Cristo? ¿Tribulación, o angustia, o persecución, o hambre, o desnudez, o peligro, o espada? ^8:36Como está escrito, “Por causa de ti somos muertos todo el tiempo; somos contados como ovejas de matadero”. ^8:37Antes, en todas estas cosas somos más que vencedores por medio de Aquél que nos amó: ^8:38por lo cual estoy seguro que ni la muerte, ni la vida, ni ángeles, ni principados, ni potestades, ni lo presente, ni lo por venir, ^8:39ni lo alto, ni lo profundo, ni ninguna otra criatura nos podrá separar del amor de Dios que es en Cristo Jesús Señor nuestro.
