John, Chapter 2.5: The Lord of Life arose from the dead and gave his disciples the indwelling Holy Spirit (19:28 - 21:25)

Introduction: Jesus fulfilled the Law and the Prophets at his death on Calvary (19:28 - 37)

^19:30Therefore when Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, “It has been fulfilled!”

And he bowed his head, and gave up the spirit.

^19:31Therefore the Jews, because it was the preparation, so that the bodies would not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath day (for that Sabbath day was a high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

^19:32Then the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first; and of the other who was crucified with him.

^19:33But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs; ^19:34but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and immediately blood and water came out.

^19:35And he that saw it bore testimony, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he says true, that you might believe.

^19:36For these things were done, that the Scripture would be fulfilled, “A bone of him shall not be broken.” ^19:37And again another Scripture says, “They shall look on him whom they pierced.”

§Complement    Body: Jesus appeared to his disciples and showed them the proof of his resurrection from the dead (19:38 - 20:31)

^19:38And after this, Joseph of Arimathaea (being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews) asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission.

Therefore he came, and took the body of Jesus.

^19:39And Nicodemus also came, who at the first came to Jesus by night; and he brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds.

^19:40Then they took the body of Jesus, and they wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

^19:41Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new tomb, in which no man had ever been laid; ^19:42therefore they laid Jesus there because of the Jews’ preparation day, because the tomb was nearby.

¶Opposite    Peter and John investigated the empty tomb of Jesus (20:1 - 10)

^20:1Mary Magdalene came early the first day of the week, when it was yet dark, to the tomb, and sees the stone taken away from the tomb.

^20:2Then she runs, and comes to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved; and she says to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb; and we know not where they have laid him!”

^20:3Therefore Peter went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the tomb. ^20:4So they both ran together; and the other disciple outran Peter, and came first to the tomb. ^20:5And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet he did not go in.

^20:6Then following him Simon Peter comes, and went into the tomb, and sees the linen clothes lie; ^20:7and the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.

^20:8Then went in also that other disciple, who came first to the tomb; and he saw, and believed: ^20:9for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise again from the dead. ^20:10Then the disciples went away again to their own home.

^20:11But Mary stood outside at the tomb weeping; and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the tomb, ^20:12and sees two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. ^20:13And they say to her, “Woman, why do you weep?” She says to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.”

^20:14And when she had said this, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and did not know that it was Jesus. ^20:15Jesus says to her, “Woman, why do you weep? Who are you looking for?” She, supposing him to be the gardener, says to him, “Sir, if you have carried him from here, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.”

^20:16Jesus says to her, “Mary.” She turned herself, and says to him, “Rabboni!” (Which is to say, “Teacher.”)

^20:17Jesus says to her, “Touch me not: for I have not yet ascended to my Father; but go to my brethren, and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.’”

^20:18Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things to her.

¶Complement   The risen Christ appeared to his disciples, and showed them his hands and his side, but they did not touch Him (20:19 - 23)

^20:19Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and says to them, “Peace to you.”

^20:20And when he had so said, he showed them his hands and his side.

Then the disciples were glad, when they saw the Lord.

^20:21Then Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you; as my Father has sent me, even so send I you.”

^20:22And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and says to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit right now. ^20:23Whosoever sins you remit, they are remitted to them; and whosoever sins you retain, they are retained.”

¶Unique   The risen Christ commanded Thomas to put his fingers into the print of the nails and thrust his hand into his side (20:24 - 31)

^20:24But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came; ^20:25therefore the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “Unless I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

^20:26And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them; and Jesus came, the doors being shut; and he stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you.”

^20:27Then he says to Thomas, “Extend your finger, and behold my hands; and extend your hand, and thrust it into my side; and be not faithless, but believing.” ^20:28And Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” ^20:29Jesus says to him, “Thomas, because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.”

^20:30And truly many other signs Jesus did in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this Book; ^20:31but these have been written, that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you might have Life through his Name.

^21:1After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberius. And in this manner did he show himself: ^21:2there were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathaniel of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples. ^21:3Simon Peter says to them, “I am going fishing.” They say to him, “We are going with you also.” They went forth, and immediately entered into a boat; and that night they caught nothing.

^21:4But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. ^21:5Then Jesus says to them, “Children, do you have any food?” They answered him, “No.” ^21:6And he said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you shall find.” Therefore they cast it, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fish. ^21:7Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved says to Peter, “It is the Lord.”

Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his fisherman’s coat (for he was lightly clothed), and cast himself into the sea. ^21:8And the other disciples came in a little boat dragging the net with fish (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits).

^21:9As soon then as they came to land, they saw a fire of coals there; and fish laid on it, and bread. ^21:10Jesus says to them, “Bring of the fish which you have now caught.” ^21:11Simon Peter went up, and dragged the net to land full of great fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and for all there were so many, yet the net was not broken.

^21:12Jesus says to them, “Come and dine.” And none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” Knowing that it was the Lord. ^21:13Then Jesus comes, and takes bread, and gives to them, and fish likewise. ^21:14This is now the third time that Jesus showed himself to his disciples, after he had risen from the dead.

¶Complement   Jesus called Peter to follow Him regardless of what happened to John (21:15 - 25)

^21:15So when they had dined, Jesus says to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonas, do you selflessly love me more than these fish?” He says to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you like a brother.” He says to him, “Feed my lambs.” ^21:16He says to him again the second time, “Simon, son of Jonas, do you selflessly love me?” He says to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you like a brother.” He says to him, “Tend my sheep.” ^21:17He says to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonas, do you love me like a brother?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me like a brother?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you like a brother.” Jesus says to him, “Feed my sheep.

^21:18Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you girded yourself, and walked where you wanted to go; but when you shall be old, you shall stretch forth your hands, and another shall gird you, and carry you where you do not want to go.” ^21:19He spoke this, signifying by what death he would glorify God.

And when he had spoken this, he says to him, “Follow me.” ^21:20Then Peter, turning about, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, “Lord, who is he that betrays you?” ^21:21Peter seeing him says to Jesus, “Lord, and what shall this man do?” ^21:22Jesus says to him, “If I will that he remains until I come, what is that to you? You follow me.”

^21:23Then this saying went abroad among the brethren, that that disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him, “He shall not die”; but, “If I will that he remains until I come, what is that to you?” ^21:24This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true.

^21:25And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.

^19:35Y el que lo vio, da testimonio, y su testimonio es verdadero; y él sabe que dice verdad, para que ustedes creáis.

^19:36Porque estas cosas fueron hechas para que se cumpliese la Escritura, “Hueso suyo no será quebrado”. ^19:37Y también otra Escritura dice, “Mirarán a Aquél a quien traspasaron”.

¶Lo opuesto   Pedro y Juan investigaron la tumba vacía de Jesús (20:1 - 10)

^20:1Y el primer día de la semana, de mañana, siendo aún oscuro, María Magdalena vino al sepulcro, y vio quitada la piedra del sepulcro.

^20:2Entonces corrió, y vino a Simón Pedro, y al otro discípulo, a quien amaba Jesús, y les dijo, “¡Se han llevado del sepulcro al Señor, y no sabemos dónde le han puesto!”.

^20:3Pedro entonces salió, y el otro discípulo, y fueron al sepulcro. ^20:4Y corrían los dos juntos; pero el otro discípulo corrió más aprisa que Pedro, y llegó primero al sepulcro. ^20:5Y bajándose a mirar, vio los lienzos puestos allí; pero no entró.

^20:6Luego llegó Simón Pedro tras él, y entró en el sepulcro, y vio los lienzos puestos allí, ^20:7y el sudario que había estado sobre su cabeza, no puesto con los lienzos, sino envuelto en un lugar aparte.

^20:8Entonces entró también el otro discípulo, que había llegado primero al sepulcro, y vio, y creyó: ^20:9porque aún no habían entendido la Escritura, que era necesario que él resucitase de los muertos. ^20:10Entonces los discípulos se volvieron a sus casas.

^20:14Y habiendo dicho esto, volteó hacia atrás, y vio a Jesús que estaba allí; pero no sabía que era Jesús. ^20:15Jesús le dijo, “Mujer, ¿por qué lloras? ¿A quién buscas?”. Ella, pensando que era el hortelano, le dijo, “Señor, si tú le has llevado, dime dónde le has puesto, y yo lo llevaré”.

^20:16Jesús le dijo, “María”. Volviéndose ella, le dijo, “¡Raboni!”. (Que quiere decir, Maestro.)

^20:17Jesús le dijo, “No me toques: porque aún no he subido a mi Padre; pero ve a mis hermanos, y diles, ‘Subo a mi Padre y a vuestro Padre, a mi Dios y a vuestro Dios’”.

^20:18Vino María Magdalena dando las nuevas a los discípulos de que había visto al Señor, y que él le había dicho estas cosas.

^20:22Y habiendo dicho esto, sopló en ellos, y les dijo, “Recibid el Espíritu Santo ahora mismo; ^20:23a quienes remitiereis los pecados, les son remitidos; a quienes se los retuviereis, les son retenidos”.

^20:26Y ocho días después, estaban otra vez sus discípulos dentro, y con ellos Tomás. Entonces vino Jesús, estando las puertas cerradas, y poniéndose en medio, dijo, “Paz a ustedes”.

^20:27Entonces dijo a Tomás, “Extiende tu dedo y mira mis manos; y extiende tu mano, y lo empuja dentro de mi lado; y no seas incrédulo, sino creyente”. ^20:28Y Tomás respondió, y le dijo, “¡Señor mío, y Dios mío!”. ^20:29Jesús le dijo, “Tomás: porque me has visto, creíste; bienaventurados los que no vieron, y todavía ellos han creído”.

^20:30Y ciertamente muchas otras señales hizo Jesús en presencia de sus discípulos, las cuales no están escritas en este Libro. ^20:31Pero éstas se han escrito, para que creáis que Jesús es el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios; y para que creyendo, tengáis vida en su Nombre.

Le dijeron, “Nosotros también vamos contigo”. Fueron, y luego entraron en una barca; y aquella noche no pescaron nada.

^21:4Y al amanecer, Jesús se puso a la ribera; pero los discípulos no sabían que era Jesús. ^21:5Entonces Jesús les dijo, “Hijitos, ¿tenéis algo de comer?”. Le respondieron, “No”. ^21:6Y él les dijo, “Echad la red a la derecha de la barca, y hallaréis”. Entonces la echaron, y ya no la podían sacar por la multitud de peces. ^21:7Entonces aquel discípulo, a quien Jesús amaba, dijo a Pedro, “¡Es el Señor!”.

Ahora cuando Simón Pedro oyó que era el Señor, se ciñó su ropa (porque estaba desnudo), y se echó al mar. ^21:8Y los otros discípulos vinieron en una barca (porque no estaban lejos de tierra, sino como a doscientos codos), trayendo la red con los peces.

^21:9Y cuando llegaron a tierra, vieron brasas puestas, y un pez sobre ellas, y pan. ^21:10Jesús les dijo, “Traed de los peces que pescasteis ahora”. ^21:11Simón Pedro subió, y trajo la red a tierra, llena de grandes peces, ciento cincuenta y tres; y siendo tantos, la red no se rompió.

^21:12Jesús les dijo, “Venid y comed”. Y ninguno de los discípulos osaba preguntarle, “¿Quién eres?”: sabiendo que era el Señor. ^21:13Entonces vino Jesús, y tomó el pan y les dio; y asimismo del pez. ^21:14Ésta era ya la tercera vez que Jesús se manifestaba a sus discípulos, después de haber resucitado de los muertos.

^21:15Y cuando hubieron comido, Jesús dijo a Simón Pedro, “Simón, hijo de Jonás, ¿me amas más que éstos pez?”. Le respondió, “Sí Señor, tú sabes que te amo”. Él le dijo, “Apacienta mis corderos”. ^21:16Vuelve a decirle la segunda vez, “Simón, hijo de Jonás, ¿me amas?”. Le responde, “Sí, Señor; tú sabes que te amo”. Él le dijo, “Apacienta mis ovejas”. ^21:17Le dijo la tercera vez, “Simón, hijo de Jonás, ¿me amas como un hermano?”. Pedro, entristecido de que le dijese la tercera vez, “¿Me amas como un hermano?”. Le dijo, “Señor, tú sabes todas las cosas; tú sabes que te amo como un hermano”. Jesús le dijo, “Apacienta mis ovejas.

^21:18Verdaderamente, verdaderamente, te digo: cuando eras más joven, te ceñías e ibas a donde querías; pero cuando ya seas viejo, extenderás tus manos, y te ceñirá otro, y te llevará a donde no quieras”. ^21:19Esto dijo, dando a entender con qué muerte había de glorificar a Dios.

Y dicho esto, le dijo, “Sígueme”. ^21:20Entonces Pedro, volviéndose, ve a aquel discípulo al cual Jesús amaba, que los seguía, el que también se había recostado en su pecho en la cena, y le había dicho, “Señor, ¿quién es el que te va a entregar?”. ^21:21Cuando Pedro lo vio, dijo a Jesús, “Señor, ¿y éste qué?”. ^21:22Jesús le dijo, “Si quiero que él quede hasta que yo venga, ¿qué a ti? Tú sígueme”.

^21:23Salió entonces este dicho entre los hermanos, que aquel discípulo no moriría. Pero Jesús no le dijo, “No morirá”; sino, “Si quiero que él quede hasta que yo venga, ¿qué a ti?”. ^21:24Éste es el discípulo que da testimonio de estas cosas, y escribió estas cosas; y sabemos que su testimonio es verdadero.

^21:25Y hay también muchas otras cosas que Jesús hizo, las cuales si se escribiesen una por una, pienso que ni aun en el mundo cabrían los libros que se habrían de escribir. Amén.
