§Unique Introduction: God opened the door for Nehemiah to travel to Jerusalem to repair the walls of the city (1:1 - 2:8)

¶Opposite Nehemiah learned of the terrible condition of the city of Jerusalem and prayed for God to help him do something about it (1:1 - 11)

^1:1The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. And it came to pass in the month Chisleu, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace, ^1:2that Hanani, one of my brothers, came, he and certain men of Judah.

And I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.

^1:3And they said to me, “The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach; also the wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are burned with fire.”

^1:4And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned a number of days, and fasted; and I prayed before the God of Heaven, ^1:5and said, “Please, O Jehovah God of Heaven, the great and dreadful God, that keeps Covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his Commandments: ^1:6let your ear now be attentive, and your eyes open, that you may hear the prayer of your servant, which I pray before you now, day and night, for the children of Israel your servants; and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against you; both I and my father’s house have sinned. ^1:7We have dealt very corruptly against you, and have not kept the Commandments, nor the Statutes, nor the Judgments, which you commanded your servant Moses. ^1:8Please, remember the Word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations; ^1:9but if you turn to me, and keep my Commandments and do them, though there were any of you cast out to the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from there, and will bring them to the place that I have chosen to set my Name there.’

^1:10Now these are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power, and by your strong hand. ^1:11O Lord, please, let your ear now be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants, who desire to fear your Name; and please prosper your servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man” (for I was the king’s cupbearer).

¶Opposite King Artaxerxes granted Nehemiah’s request to rebuild the walls of the city of Jerusalem (2:1 - 8)

^2:1And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him; and I took up the wine, and gave it to the king. Now I had not been sad in his presence previously; ^2:2therefore the king said to me, “Why is your countenance sad, seeing you are not sick? This is nothing but sorrow of heart.”

Then I was terrified; ^2:3and I said to the king, “Let the king live forever. Why should my countenance not be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ tombs, lies waste, and its gates are consumed with fire?”

^2:4Then the king said to me, “For what do you make request?” So I prayed to the God of Heaven; ^2:5and I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, I ask that you would send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers’ tombs, that I may build it.”

^2:6And the king said to me (the queen also sitting by him), “For how long shall your journey be? And when will you return?” So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.

^2:7Moreover I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the Euphrates river, that they may convey me over until I come into Judah; ^2:8and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which pertained to the House, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I will enter into.” And so the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.

§Complement Body: Nehemiah led the Jews to rebuild the wall and purify the corrupt priesthood (2:9 - 13:14)

¶Opposite Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem and led the people to rebuild the wall of the city (2:9 - 4:23)

Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me. ^2:10When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of this, it grieved them exceedingly that a man had come to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.

^2:11So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days. ^2:12And I arose in the night, I and a few men with me; neither did I tell any man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem; neither was there any beast with me, except the beast that I rode upon. ^2:13And I went out by night by the Valley Gate, even before the dragon well, and to the dung port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and its gates were consumed with fire. ^2:14Then I went on to the Fountain Gate, and to the king’s pool; but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass. ^2:15Then I went up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the Valley Gate, and so returned. ^2:16And the rulers did not know where I went, nor what I did; neither had I as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that did the work. ^2:17Then I said to them, “You see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire; come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, so that we are no longer a reproach.” ^2:18Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me, as also the king’s words that he had spoken to me. And they said, “Let us rise up and build.” So they strengthened their hands for this good work.

^2:19But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard of this, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, “What is this thing that you do? Will you rebel against the king?” ^2:20Then I answered them, and said to them, “The God of Heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build; but you have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.”

Malchijah the son of Harim, and Hashub the son of Pahath-moab, repaired the other piece, and the tower of the furnaces. ^3:12And next to him repaired Shallum the son of Halohesh, the ruler of the half part of Jerusalem, he and his daughters. ^3:13Hanun and the inhabitants of Zanoah repaired the Valley Gate; they built it, and set up its doors, its locks, and its bars; and one thousand cubits on the wall unto the Dung Gate. ^3:14But Malchiah the son of Rechab, the ruler of part of Beth-haccerem, repaired the Dung Gate; he built it, and set up its doors, locks, and bars. ^3:15But Shallun the son of Col-hozeh, the ruler of part of Mizpah, repaired the Fountain Gate; he built it, and covered it, and set up its doors, its locks, and its bars, and the wall of the pool of Siloam by the king’s garden, and unto the stairs that go down from the city of David. ^3:16After him repaired Nehemiah the son of Azbuk, the ruler of the half part of Beth-zur, unto the place over before the tombs of David, and to the pool that was made, and to the house of the mighty. ^3:17After him repaired the Levites, Rehum the son of Bani. Next to him repaired Hashabiah, the ruler of the half part of Keilah, in his part. ^3:18After him repaired their brethren, Bavai the son of Henadad, the ruler of the half part of Keilah. ^3:19And next to him repaired Ezer the son of Jeshua, the ruler of Mizpah, another piece next to the going up to the armory at the turning of the wall. ^3:20After him Baruch the son of Zabbai earnestly repaired the other piece, from the turning of the wall to the door of the house of Eliashib the high priest. ^3:21After him repaired Meremoth the son of Urijah the son of Koz another piece, from the door of the house of Eliashib even unto the end of the house of Eliashib. ^3:22And after him repaired the priests, the men of the plain. ^3:23After him repaired Benjamin and Hashub next to their house. After him repaired Azariah the son of Maaseiah the son of Ananiah by his house. ^3:24After him repaired Binnui the son of Henadad another piece, from the house of Azariah unto the turning of the wall, even to the corner. ^3:25Palal the son of Uzai repaired, next to the turning of the wall, and the tower which lies out from the king’s high house, that was by the court of the prison. After him repaired Pedaiah the son of Parosh. ^3:26Moreover the Nethinims dwelt in Ophel, unto the place next to the Water Gate toward the east, and the tower that lies out. ^3:27After them the Tekoites repaired another piece, next to the great tower that lies out, even unto the wall of Ophel. ^3:28From above the Horse Gate repaired the priests, everyone next to his house. ^3:29After them repaired Zadok the son of Immer next to his house. After him repaired also Shemaiah the son of Shechaniah, the keeper of the East Gate. ^3:30After him repaired Hananiah the son of Shelemiah, and Hanun the sixth son of Zalaph, another piece. After him repaired Meshullam the son of Berechiah next to his chamber. ^3:31After him repaired Malchiah the goldsmith’s son to the place of the Nethinims, and of the merchants, next to the Gate Miphkad, and unto the going up of the corner. ^3:32And between the going up of the corner unto the Sheep Gate repaired the goldsmiths and the merchants.

^4:1But it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we built the wall, he was furious, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews. ^4:2And he spoke before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they fortify themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they make an end in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the debris that are burned?” ^4:3Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, “Even that which they build, if a fox goes up on it, he shall even break down their little stone wall.” ^4:4“Hear, O our God: for we are despised; and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a plunder in the land of captivity; ^4:5and do not cover their iniquity, and let their sin not be blotted out from before you: for they have provoked you to anger before the builders.” ^4:6So we built the wall; and all the wall was joined together to the half of it: for the people had a mind to work. ^4:7But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, Tobiah, and the Arabians, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very angry, ^4:8and all of them conspired together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it. ^4:9Nevertheless we made our prayer to our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them. ^4:10And Judah said, “The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed; and there is much debris, so that we are not able to build the wall.” ^4:11And our adversaries said, “They shall not know; neither see, until we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.” ^4:12And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said to us ten times, “From all places where you shall return to us they will be upon you.” ^4:13Therefore I set in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, even I set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows. ^4:14And I looked, and rose up, and said to the nobles, to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, “Do not be afraid of them; remember the Lord, which is great and dreadful; and fight for your brethren, your sons and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.” ^4:15And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known to us, and God had brought their counsel to nothing, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one to his work. ^4:16And it came to pass from that time forth, that half of my servants labored in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows; and they wore the coats of mail; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah. ^4:17They which built on the wall, and they that carried burdens, with those that loaded: every one with one of his hands worked in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon: ^4:18for the builders, everyone had his sword girded by his side, and so they built. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me; ^4:19and I said to the nobles, to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, “The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another. ^4:20Therefore in what place you hear the sound of the trumpet, resort to us there. Our God shall fight for us.” ^4:21So we labored in the work; and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning until the stars appeared. ^4:22Likewise at the same time I said to the people, “Let everyone with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labor on the day.” ^4:23So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, except that everyone put them off for washing.

¶Opposite Nehemiah finished rebuilding the wall in spite of last-minute schemes by his enemies (5:1 - 6:19)

^5:1And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews: ^5:2for there were some that said, “We, our sons, and our daughters, are many; therefore we take up grain for them, that we may eat, and live.” ^5:3Also there were some that said, “We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might buy grain, because of the famine.” ^5:4There were also some that said, “We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards. ^5:5Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children; and, look, we bring into slavery our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought into slavery already; neither is it in our power to redeem them: for other men have our lands and vineyards.” ^5:6And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words. ^5:7Then I considered it; and I rebuked the nobles and the ruler; and said to them, “You take usury, everyone of his brother!” And I set a great assembly against them; ^5:8and I said to them, “We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold to the heathen. And will you even sell your brethren? Or shall they be sold to us?” Then they held their peace, and found nothing to answer. ^5:9Also I said, “It is not good, that which you do. Should you not walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies? ^5:10I likewise, and my brethren, and my servants, lend them money and grain; please, let us leave off this usury. ^5:11Please restore to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their olive yards, and their houses; also the hundredth part of the money, and of the grain, the wine, and the oil, that you demand of them.” ^5:12Then they said, “We will restore them, and will require nothing of them, so will we do as you say.” Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise. ^5:13Also I shook my lap, and said, “So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labor, that does not perform this promise: even thus be he shaken out, and emptied.” And all the congregation said, “Amen”, and praised Jehovah. And the people did according to this promise.

^5:14Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even to the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren had not eaten the bread of the governor. ^5:15But the former governors that had been before me were burdensome to the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, besides forty shekels of silver; moreover, even their servants ruled over the people; but I did not do so, because of the fear of God. ^5:16Moreover, I also continued in the work of this wall; neither did we buy any land; and all my servants were gathered there to the work. ^5:17Moreover there were at my table a hundred and fifty of the Jews and rulers, beside those that came to us from among the heathen that were round about us. ^5:18Now that which was prepared for me daily was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine; yet for all this I did not require the bread of the governor, because the slavery of Persia was heavy upon this people. ^5:19“Think upon me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.”

^6:1Now it came to pass, when Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had built the wall, and that there was no breach left in it (though at that time I had not yet set up the doors upon the gates), ^6:2that Sanballat and Geshem sent a message to me, saying, “Come, let us meet together in one of the villages in the plain of Ono.” But they thought to do me mischief. ^6:3And I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. Why should the work cease, while I leave it, and come down to you?” ^6:4Yet they sent to me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner. ^6:5Then Sanballat sent his servant to me in a similar manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand, ^6:6in which was written, “It is reported among the heathen (and Gashmu says it), that you and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause you build the wall, so that you may be their king, according to these words. ^6:7And you have also appointed prophets to preach of you at Jerusalem, saying, ‘There is a king in Judah.’ And now it shall be reported to the king of Persia according to these words. Therefore come now, and let us take counsel together.” ^6:8Then I sent to him, saying, “There are no such things done as you say, but you feign them out of your own heart.” ^6:9For they made us all afraid, saying, “Their hands shall be weakened from the work, so that it is not completed.” “Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.”

^6:10Afterward I came to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, “Let us meet together in the House of God, within the Temple; and let us shut the doors of the Temple: for they will come to slay you; moreover, in the night they will come to kill you.” ^6:11And I said, “Should such a man as I flee? And who is there, that, being as I am, would go into the Temple to save his life? I will not go in.” ^6:12And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he had pronounced this prophecy against me: for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. ^6:13Therefore he was hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin; and then they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me. ^6:14“My God, think upon Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works; and on the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.”

^6:15So the wall was finished in the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty-two days. ^6:16And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard of it, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was done by our God. ^6:17Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came to them: ^6:18for there were many in Judah sworn to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah. ^6:19Also they reported his good deeds before me, and uttered my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.

¶Complement Ezra led a large group of Jews from Persia to Jerusalem and they came together to worship on the seventh month (7:1 - 8:18)

^7:1So it came to pass, when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the gatekeepers and the singers and the Levites were appointed, ^7:2that I gave my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the ruler of the palace, authority over Jerusalem: for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many. ^7:3And I said to them, “Let the gates of Jerusalem not be opened until the sun is hot; and while they stand by, let them shut the doors, and bar them. And appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, everyone in his watch, and everyone to be over before his own house.”

^7:4Now the city was large and great, but the people were few in it, and the houses were not built. ^7:5And my God put into my heart to gather together the nobles, the rulers, and the people, that they might be reckoned by genealogy. And I found a register of the genealogy of them which came up at the first, and found written in it: ^7:6“These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, everyone to his city, ^7:7who came with Zerubbabel: Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah. ^7:66The entire congregation in total was forty-two thousand, three hundred and sixty, ^7:67beside their men servants and their maidservants, of whom there were seven thousand, three hundred and thirty-seven; and they had two hundred and forty-five singing men and singing women. ^7:68Their horses: seven hundred and thirty-six; their mules: two hundred and forty-five; ^7:69their camels: four hundred and thirty-five; and six thousand, seven hundred and twenty donkeys. ^7:70And some of the chief of the fathers gave to the work: the Governor gave to the treasure one thousand drams of gold, fifty cups, five hundred and thirty priests’ garments; ^7:71and some of the chief of the fathers gave to the treasury of the work twenty thousand drams of gold, and two thousand and two hundred mina of silver; ^7:72and that which the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand drams of gold, and two thousand mina of silver, and sixty-seven priests’ garments.”

And all the people answered, “Amen, Amen”, with lifting up of their hands; and they bowed their heads, and worshipped Jehovah with their faces to the ground. ^8:7Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the Law; and the people stood in their place. ^8:8So they read in the Book in the Law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading. ^8:9And Nehemiah (who was the Governor), and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said to all the people, “This day is holy to Jehovah your God; do not mourn, nor weep.” For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the Law. ^8:10Then he said to them, “Go your way: eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy to our Lord; neither be sorry, because the joy of Jehovah is your strength.” ^8:11So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, “Hold your peace: for the day is holy; neither be grieved.” ^8:12And all the people went their way to eat, to drink, to send portions, and to make great merriment, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.

You have made heaven, the Heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all things that are in it, and the seas and all that is in it; and you preserve them all; and the host of Heaven worships you. ^9:7You are Jehovah the true God, who chose Abram, and brought him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gave him the name of Abraham; ^9:8and you found his heart faithful before you, and made a Covenant with him to give him the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, and the Girgashites: to give it to his seed; and you have performed your words: for you are righteous. ^9:9And you saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heard their cry by the Red sea; ^9:10and showed signs and wonders upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land: for you knew that they dealt proudly against them. And many times you delivered them according to your mercies; ^9:29and you testified against them, that you might bring them again to your Law; yet they dealt proudly, and did not give heed to your Commandments, but sinned against your Judgments (which if a man does them, he shall live in them), and withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear. ^9:30Yet many years did you forbear them, and testified against them by your Spirit in your prophets, yet they would not listen; therefore you gave them into the hand of the people of the lands. ^9:31Nevertheless for your great mercies’ sake you did not utterly consume them, nor forsake them: for you are a gracious and merciful God. ^9:32Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the dreadful God, who keeps Covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before you, that has come upon us: on our kings, on our princes, on our priests, on our prophets, on our fathers, and on all your people, since the time of the kings of Assyria until this day. ^9:33Nevertheless you are just in all that has been brought upon us: for you have done right; but we have done wickedly; ^9:34neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept your Law, nor have they given heed to your Commandments and your Testimonies, with which you testified against them: ^9:35for they have not served you in their kingdom, and in your great goodness that you gave them, and in the large and fat land which you gave before them; neither did they turn from their wicked works. ^9:36Behold, we are servants this day, and for the land that you gave to our fathers to eat its fruit and its good, behold, we are servants in it; ^9:37and it yields much increase to the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins; also they have dominion over our bodies and over our cattle, at their pleasure; and we are in great distress. ^9:38And because of all this we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, Levites, and priests, seal to it.”

^5:14También desde el día que me mandó el rey que fuese gobernador de ellos en la tierra de Judá, desde el año veinte del rey Artajerjes hasta el año treinta y dos, doce años, ni yo ni mis hermanos comimos el pan del gobernador. ^5:15Pero los primeros gobernadores que fueron antes de mí, cargaron al pueblo, y tomaron de ellos por el pan y por el vino sobre cuarenta siclos de plata; a más de esto, sus criados se enseñoreaban sobre el pueblo; pero yo no hice así, a causa del temor de Dios. ^5:16También continué en la obra de restauración de este muro, y no compramos heredad; y todos mis criados juntos estaban allí en la obra. ^5:17Además ciento cincuenta hombres de los judíos y magistrados, y los que venían a nosotros de las naciones que están en nuestros alrededores. ^5:18Y lo que se aderezaba para cada día era un buey, seis ovejas escogidas, y aves también se aparejaban para mí, y cada diez días vino en toda abundancia; y con todo esto nunca requerí el pan del gobernador: porque la servidumbre de este pueblo era grave. ^5:19“Acuérdate de mí para bien, Dios mío, y de todo lo que hice por este pueblo”.

^6:1Y aconteció que habiendo oído Sanbalat, y Tobías, y Gesem el árabe, y el resto de nuestros enemigos, que yo había edificado el muro, y que no quedaba en él portillo (aunque hasta aquel tiempo no había puesto las hojas en las puertas), ^6:2Sanbalat y Gesem enviaron a decirme, “Ven y reunámonos juntos en alguna de las aldeas en el campo de Ono”. Pero ellos habían pensado hacerme mal. ^6:3Y les envié mensajeros, diciendo, “Yo hago una gran obra, y no puedo ir: porque cesaría la obra, dejándola yo para ir a ustedes”. ^6:4Y enviaron a mí con el mismo asunto por cuatro veces, y yo les respondí de la misma manera. ^6:5Envió entonces Sanbalat a mí su criado, a decir lo mismo por quinta vez, con una carta abierta en su mano, ^6:6en la cual estaba escrito, “Se ha oído entre las naciones (y Gasmu lo dice), que tú y los judíos pensáis rebelaros; y que por eso edificas tú el muro, con la mira, según estas palabras, de ser tú su rey; ^6:7y que has puesto profetas que prediquen de ti en Jerusalén, diciendo, ‘¡Hay rey en Judá!’ Y ahora serán oídas del rey las tales palabras; ven por tanto, y consultemos juntos”. ^6:8Entonces envié yo a decirles, “No hay tal cosa como dices, sino que de tu corazón tú lo inventas”. ^6:9Porque todos ellos nos intimidaban, diciendo, “Se debilitarán las manos de ellos en la obra, y no será hecha”. “Ahora, pues, oh Dios, fortalece mis manos”.

^6:10Vine luego a casa de Semaías hijo de Delaías, hijo de Mehetabel: porque él estaba encerrado; el cual me dijo, “Reunámonos en la Casa de Dios dentro del templo, y cerremos las puertas del templo: porque vienen para matarte; sí, esta noche vendrán a matarte”. ^6:11Entonces dije, “¿Un hombre como yo ha de huir? ¿Y quién, que fuera como yo, entraría al templo para salvar su vida? ¡No entraré!”. ^6:12Y entendí que Dios no lo había enviado, sino que hablaba aquella profecía contra mí: porque Tobías y Sanbalat le habían alquilado por salario. ^6:13Porque fue sobornado para que yo fuese intimidado e hiciese así, y que pecase, y les sirviese de mal nombre con que fuera yo infamado. ^6:14“Acuérdate, Dios mío, de Tobías y de Sanbalat, conforme a estas sus obras, y también de Noadías profetisa, y de los otros profetas que trataban de intimidarme”.

^6:15Así que el muro fue terminado el veinticinco del mes de Elul, en cincuenta y dos días. ^6:16Y sucedió que cuando lo oyeron todos nuestros enemigos, temieron todas las naciones que estaban en nuestros alrededores, y se sintieron muy humillados ante sus propios ojos, y conocieron que esta obra había sido hecha por nuestro Dios. ^6:17Asimismo en aquellos días iban muchas cartas de los nobles de Judá a Tobías, y las de Tobías venían a ellos: ^6:18porque muchos en Judá se habían conjurado con él: porque era yerno de Secanías hijo de Ara; y Johanán su hijo había tomado la hija de Mesulam, hijo de Berequías. ^6:19También contaban delante de mí las buenas obras de él, y a él le referían mis palabras. Y Tobías enviaba cartas para atemorizarme.

¶El complemento Esdras llevó un gran grupo de judíos desde Persia a Jerusalén y ellos se reunieron para adorar en el séptimo mes (7:1 - 8:18)

Y señalé guardas de los moradores de Jerusalén, cada cual en su guardia, y cada uno delante de su casa”.

Y venido el mes séptimo, los hijos de Israel estaban en sus ciudades. ^8:1Y se juntó todo el pueblo como un solo hombre en la plaza que está delante de la puerta de las Aguas. Y dijeron al escriba Esdras que trajese el Libro de la Ley de Moisés, que Jehová mandó a Israel. ^8:2Y Esdras el sacerdote, trajo la Ley delante de la congregación, así de hombres como de mujeres, y de todo entendido para escuchar, el primer día del mes séptimo. ^8:3Y leyó en el Libro delante de la plaza que está delante de la puerta de las Aguas, desde el alba hasta el mediodía, en presencia de hombres y mujeres y entendidos; y los oídos de todo el pueblo estaban atentos al Libro de la Ley. ^8:4Y Esdras el escriba estaba sobre un púlpito de madera, que habían hecho para ello; y junto a él, a su mano derecha, estaban Matatías, Sema, Anaías, Urías, Hilcías y Maasías; y a su mano izquierda, Pedaías, Misael, Malquías, Hasum, Hasbadana, Zacarías y Mesulam. ^8:5Abrió, pues, Esdras el Libro a ojos de todo el pueblo (porque estaba más alto que todo el pueblo); y como lo abrió, todo el pueblo estuvo atento. ^8:6Bendijo entonces Esdras a Jehová, Dios grande. Y todo el pueblo respondió, “¡Amén! ¡Amén!”. Alzando sus manos; y se humillaron, y adoraron a Jehová con el rostro a tierra. ^8:7Y Jesúa, Bani, Serebías, Jamín, Acub, Sabetai, Odías, Maasías, Kelita, Azarías, Jozabad, Hanán y Pelaías, levitas, hacían entender al pueblo la Ley; y el pueblo estaba en su lugar. ^8:8Y leían en el Libro de la Ley de Dios claramente, y ponían el sentido, de modo que entendiesen la lectura. ^8:9Y Nehemías el Tirsata, y el sacerdote Esdras, escriba, y los levitas que hacían entender al pueblo, dijeron a todo el pueblo, “Día santo es a Jehová nuestro Dios; no os entristezcáis, ni lloréis”. Porque todo el pueblo lloraba oyendo las palabras de la Ley. ^8:10Luego les dijo, “Id, comed grosuras, y bebed vino dulce, y enviad porciones a los que no tienen nada preparado: porque día santo es a nuestro Señor; y no os entristezcáis: porque el gozo de Jehová es vuestra fortaleza”. ^8:11Los levitas, pues, hacían callar a todo el pueblo, diciendo, “Callad, que es día santo, y no os entristezcáis”. ^8:12Y todo el pueblo se fue a comer y a beber, y a enviar porciones, y a gozar de grande alegría: porque habían entendido las palabras que les habían enseñado.

^8:13Y al día siguiente se reunieron los príncipes de las familias de todo el pueblo, sacerdotes, y levitas, a Esdras escriba, para entender las palabras de la Ley. ^8:14Y hallaron escrito en la Ley que Jehová había mandado por mano de Moisés, que habitasen los hijos de Israel en cabañas en la fiesta solemne del mes séptimo; ^8:15y que hiciesen saber, y pasar pregón por todas sus ciudades y por Jerusalén, diciendo, “Salid al monte, y traed ramas de olivo, y ramas de pino, y ramas de arrayán, y ramas de palmas, y ramas de todo árbol frondoso, para hacer cabañas como está escrito”. ^8:16Salió, pues, el pueblo, y trajeron, y se hicieron cabañas, cada uno sobre su terrado, y en sus patios, y en los patios de la Casa de Dios, y en la plaza de la puerta de las Aguas, y en la plaza de la puerta de Efraín. ^8:17Y toda la congregación que volvió de la cautividad hicieron tabernáculos, y en tabernáculos habitaron: porque desde los días de Josué hijo de Nun hasta aquel día, no habían hecho así los hijos de Israel. Y hubo alegría muy grande. ^8:18Y leyó Esdras en el Libro de la Ley de Dios cada día, desde el primer día hasta el postrero; y celebraron la fiesta por siete días, y el octavo día fue de solemne asamblea, según lo establecido.

¶El complemento Los Judíos confesaron sus pecados contra Jehová y renovaron su pacto con Él (9:1 - 11:36)

^9:1Y el día veinticuatro del mismo mes se reunieron los hijos de Israel en ayuno, y con cilicio y tierra sobre sí. ^9:2Y la simiente de Israel ya se había apartado de todos los extranjeros; y estando en pie, confesaron sus pecados, y las iniquidades de sus padres. ^9:3Y puestos de pie en su lugar, leyeron en el Libro de la Ley de Jehová su Dios la cuarta parte del día, y la cuarta parte confesaron y adoraron a Jehová su Dios. ^9:4Luego se levantaron sobre la grada de los levitas, Jesúa y Bani, Cadmiel, Sebanías, Buni, Serebías, Bani y Quenani, y clamaron en voz alta a Jehová su Dios. ^9:5Entonces los levitas (Jesúa y Cadmiel, Bani, Hasabnías, Serebías, Odías, Sebanías y Petaías) dijeron, “¡Levantaos, bendecid a Jehová vuestro Dios desde la eternidad hasta la eternidad! Bendito sea tu glorioso Nombre, el cual es exaltado sobre toda bendición y alabanza. ^9:6Tú, sólo tú, oh Jehová; tú hiciste el cielo, y el Cielo de los cielos, y todo su ejército, la tierra y todo lo que está en ella, los mares y todo lo que hay en ellos; y tú has preservado todas estas cosas, y el ejército del Cielo te adora. ^9:7Tú, eres oh Jehová, el Dios que escogiste a Abram, y lo sacaste de Ur de los caldeos, y le pusiste el nombre Abraham; ^9:8y hallaste fiel su corazón delante de ti, e hiciste pacto con él para darle la tierra del cananeo, del heteo, y del amorreo, y del ferezeo, y del jebuseo, y del Gergeseo, para darla a su simiente; y cumpliste tu palabra: porque eres justo. ^9:9Y miraste la aflicción de nuestros padres en Egipto, y oíste el clamor de ellos en el Mar Rojo; ^9:10y diste señales y maravillas en Faraón, y en todos sus siervos, y en todo el pueblo de su tierra: porque sabías que habían hecho soberbiamente contra ellos; y te hiciste Nombre grande, como en este día. ^9:11Y dividiste el mar delante de ellos, y así pasaron por medio de él en seco; y a sus perseguidores echaste en las profundidades, como una piedra en turbulentas aguas. ^9:12Y con columna de nube los guiaste de día, y con columna de fuego de noche, para alumbrarles el camino por donde habían de ir. ^9:13Y sobre el monte de Sinaí descendiste, y hablaste con ellos desde el Cielo, y les diste Juicios rectos, Leyes verdaderas, y Estatutos y Mandamientos buenos; ^9:14y les hiciste conocer tu santo Sábado, y por mano de Moisés tu siervo les prescribiste Mandamientos, Estatutos, y Leyes. ^9:15Y les diste pan del Cielo en su hambre; y en su sed les sacaste aguas de la roca; y les prometiste que entrarían a poseer la tierra, por la cual alzaste tu mano y juraste que se la darías. ^9:16Pero ellos y nuestros padres hicieron soberbiamente, y endurecieron su cerviz, y no escucharon tus Mandamientos. ^9:17No quisieron obedecer, ni se acordaron de tus maravillas que habías hecho con ellos; antes endurecieron su cerviz, y en su rebelión pensaron poner caudillo para volverse a su servidumbre. Pero tú que eres Dios perdonador, clemente y piadoso, tardo para la ira, y grande en misericordia, no los abandonaste. ^9:18Además, cuando hicieron para sí becerro de fundición, y dijeron, ‘Éste es tu Dios que te hizo subir de Egipto’; y cometieron grandes abominaciones; ^9:19tú, con todo, por tus muchas misericordias no los abandonaste en el desierto. La columna de nube no se apartó de ellos de día, para guiarlos por el camino, ni la columna de fuego de noche, para alumbrarles el camino por el cual habían de ir. ^9:20Y diste tu buen Espíritu para enseñarles, y no retiraste tu maná de su boca, y agua les diste en su sed. ^9:21Y los sustentaste cuarenta años en el desierto; de ninguna cosa tuvieron necesidad; sus ropas no se envejecieron, ni se hincharon sus pies. ^9:22Les diste reinos y pueblos, y los distribuiste por regiones; y poseyeron la tierra de Sehón, la tierra del rey de Hesbón, y la tierra de Og rey de Basán. ^9:23Y multiplicaste sus hijos como las estrellas del cielo, y los metiste en la tierra, de la cual habías dicho a sus padres que habían de entrar a poseerla. ^9:24Y los hijos vinieron y poseyeron la tierra, y humillaste delante de ellos a los moradores del país, a los cananeos, los cuales entregaste en su mano, y a sus reyes, y a los pueblos de la tierra, para que hiciesen de ellos a su voluntad. ^9:25Y tomaron ciudades fortificadas y tierra fértil, y heredaron casas llenas de todo bien, cisternas hechas, viñas y olivares, y muchos árboles de comer; y comieron y se saciaron, se engordaron y se deleitaron en tu gran bondad. ^9:26Pero fueron desobedientes y se rebelaron contra ti, y echaron tu Ley tras sus espaldas, y mataron a tus Profetas que protestaban contra ellos para convertirlos a ti; e hicieron grandes abominaciones. ^9:27Y los entregaste en mano de sus enemigos, los cuales los afligieron. Pero en el tiempo de su tribulación clamaron a ti, y tú desde los Cielo los oíste; y según tus muchas misericordias les diste libertadores para que los librasen de mano de sus enemigos. ^9:28Pero una vez que tenían reposo, volvían a hacer lo malo delante de ti; por lo cual los abandonaste en mano de sus enemigos, que se enseñorearon de ellos; pero cuando se volvían y clamaban otra vez a ti, tú desde los Cielo los oías, y muchas veces los libraste según tus misericordias. ^9:29Y los amonestaste para que volviesen a tu Ley; pero fueron soberbios, y no oyeron tus Mandamientos, sino que pecaron contra tus Juicios (los cuales si el hombre hiciere, en ellos vivirá). Pero dieron la espalda, y endurecieron su cerviz, y no escucharon. ^9:30Los soportaste muchos años, y les amonestaste con tu Espíritu por medio de tus Profetas, pero no escucharon; por lo cual los entregaste en mano de los pueblos de la tierra. ^9:31Pero por tus muchas misericordias no los consumiste, ni los desamparaste: porque eres Dios clemente y misericordioso. ^9:32Ahora, pues, Dios nuestro, Dios grande, fuerte, terrible, que guardas el pacto y la misericordia, no sea tenida en poco delante de ti toda la aflicción que nos ha alcanzando a nuestros reyes, a nuestros príncipes, a nuestros sacerdotes, y a nuestros Profetas, y a nuestros padres, y a todo tu pueblo, desde los días de los reyes de Asiria hasta este día. ^9:33Pero tú eres justo en todo lo que ha venido sobre nosotros: porque rectamente has hecho, pero nosotros hemos hecho lo malo. ^9:34Y nuestros reyes, nuestros príncipes, nuestros sacerdotes, y nuestros padres, no pusieron por obra tu Ley, ni atendieron a tus Mandamientos y a tus Testimonios, con que les amonestabas. ^9:35Y ellos en su reino y en tu mucho bien que les diste, y en la tierra espaciosa y fértil que entregaste delante de ellos, no te sirvieron, ni se convirtieron de sus malas obras. ^9:36He aquí que hoy somos siervos, henos aquí, siervos en la tierra que diste a nuestros padres para que comiesen su fruto y su bien. ^9:37Y se multiplica su fruto para los reyes que has puesto sobre nosotros por nuestros pecados, quienes se enseñorean sobre nuestros cuerpos, y sobre nuestras bestias, conforme a su voluntad, y estamos en grande angustia. ^9:38A causa, pues, de todo eso nosotros hacemos fiel pacto, y lo escribimos, signado de nuestros príncipes, de nuestros levitas, y de nuestros sacerdotes”.

^10:28Y el resto del pueblo, los sacerdotes, levitas, porteros, y cantores, sirvientes del templo y todos los que se habían apartado de los pueblos de las tierras a la Ley de Dios, sus esposas, y sus hijos y sus hijas, todos los que podían comprender y discernir, ^10:29se adhirieron a sus hermanos y sus principales, y entraron en protesta y juramento de que andarían en la Ley de Dios, que fue dada por medio de Moisés siervo de Dios, y que guardarían y cumplirían todos los Mandamientos de Jehová nuestro Señor, y sus Juicios y sus Estatutos. ^10:30Y que no daríamos nuestras hijas a los pueblos de la tierra, ni tomaríamos sus hijas para nuestros hijos. ^10:31Asimismo, que si los pueblos de la tierra trajesen a vender mercaderías y comestibles en día de Sábado, nada tomaríamos de ellos en Sábado, ni en día santo; y que el año séptimo dejaríamos reposar la tierra, y perdonaríamos toda deuda. ^10:32Nos impusimos además por ley el cargo de contribuir cada año con la tercera parte de un siclo, para la obra de la Casa de nuestro Dios; ^10:33para el pan de la proposición, y para la ofrenda continua, y para el holocausto continuo, de los Sábados, y de las nuevas lunas, y de las festividades, y para las santificaciones y sacrificios por el pecado para expiar a Israel, y para toda la obra de la Casa de nuestro Dios. ^10:34Echamos también las suertes, los sacerdotes, los levitas, y el pueblo, acerca de la ofrenda de la leña, para traerla a la Casa de nuestro Dios, según las casas de nuestros padres, en los tiempos determinados cada un año, para quemar sobre el altar de Jehová nuestro Dios, como está escrito en la Ley. ^10:35Y que cada año traeríamos las primicias de nuestra tierra, y las primicias de todo fruto de todo árbol, a la Casa de Jehová. ^10:36Asimismo los primogénitos de nuestros hijos y de nuestras bestias, como está escrito en la Ley; y que traeríamos los primogénitos de nuestras vacas y de nuestras ovejas a la Casa de nuestro Dios, a los sacerdotes que ministran en la Casa de nuestro Dios; ^10:37que traeríamos también las primicias de nuestras masas, y nuestras ofrendas, y del fruto de todo árbol, del vino y del aceite, a los sacerdotes, a las cámaras de la Casa de nuestro Dios, y el diezmo de nuestra tierra a los levitas; y que los levitas recibirían los diezmos de nuestras labores en todas las ciudades; ^10:38y que estaría el sacerdote hijo de Aarón con los levitas, cuando los levitas recibirían el diezmo; y que los levitas llevarían el diezmo del diezmo a la Casa de nuestro Dios, a las cámaras en la casa del tesoro: ^10:39porque a las cámaras han de llevar los hijos de Israel y los hijos de Leví la ofrenda del grano, del vino, y del aceite; y allí estarán los vasos del santuario, y los sacerdotes que ministran, y los porteros, y los cantores; y no abandonaremos la Casa de nuestro Dios.

Y habitaron desde Beerseba hasta el valle de Hinom. ^11:31Y los hijos de Benjamín desde Geba habitaron en Micmas, y Hai, y en Betel y sus aldeas; ^11:32en Anatot, Nob, Ananías; ^11:33Hazor, Ramá, Gitaim; ^11:34Hadid, Zeboim, Nebalat; ^11:35Lod, y Ono, valle de los artífices. ^11:36Y algunos de los levitas, en los repartimientos de Judá y de Benjamín.

Éstos eran los príncipes de los sacerdotes y sus hermanos en los días de Jesúa. ^12:8Y los levitas: Jesúa, Binúi, Cadmiel, Serebías, Judá, y Matanías, que con sus hermanos oficiaba en los himnos. ^12:9Y Bacbucías y Uni, sus hermanos, cada cual en su ministerio. ^12:10Y Jesúa engendró a Joiacim, y Joiacim engendró a Eliasib y Eliasib engendró a Joiada, ^12:11y Joiada engendró a Jonatán, y Jonatán engendró a Jadúa. ^12:12Y en los días de Joiacim los sacerdotes cabezas de familias fueron: de Seraías, Meraías; de Jeremías, Hananías; ^12:13de Esdras, Mesulam; de Amarías, Johanán; ^12:14de Maluc, Jonatán; de Sebanías, José; ^12:15de Harim, Adna; de Meraiot, Helcai; ^12:16de Iddo, Zacarías; de Ginetón, Mesulam; ^12:17de Abías, Zicri; de Miniamín, de Moadías, Piltai; ^12:18de Bilga, Samúa; de Semaías, Jonatán; ^12:19de Joiarib, Matenai; de Jedaías, Uzi; ^12:20de Salai, Calai; de Amoc, Heber; ^12:21de Hilcías, Hasabías; de Jedaías, Natanael. ^12:22Los levitas en días de Eliasib, de Joiada, y de Johanán y Jadúa, fueron escritos por cabezas de familias; también los sacerdotes, hasta el reinado de Darío el persa. ^12:23Los hijos de Leví, cabezas de familias, fueron escritos en el libro de las Crónicas hasta los días de Johanán, hijo de Eliasib. ^12:24Y los principales de los levitas: Hasabías, Serebías, y Jesúa hijo de Cadmiel, y sus hermanos delante de ellos, para alabar y dar gracias, conforme al estatuto de David varón de Dios, guardando su turno. ^12:25Matanías, y Bacbucías, Abdías, Mesulam, Talmón, Acub, guardas, eran porteros para la guardia a las entradas de las puertas. ^12:26Éstos fueron en los días de Joiacim, hijo de Jesúa, hijo de Josadac, y en los días del gobernador Nehemías, y del sacerdote Esdras, escriba.

^12:27Y para la dedicación del muro de Jerusalén buscaron a los levitas de todos los lugares, para traerlos a Jerusalén, para hacer la dedicación y la fiesta con alabanzas y con cánticos, con címbalos, salterios y cítaras. ^12:28Y fueron reunidos los hijos de los cantores, así de la región de alrededor de Jerusalén como de las aldeas de Netofati; ^12:29y de la casa de Gilgal, y de los campos de Geba, y de Azmavet: porque los cantores se habían edificado aldeas alrededor de Jerusalén. ^12:30Y se purificaron los sacerdotes y los levitas; y purificaron al pueblo, y las puertas, y el muro. ^12:31Hice luego subir a los príncipes de Judá sobre el muro, y puse dos coros grandes que daban gracias; el uno a la mano derecha sobre el muro hacia la puerta del Muladar. ^12:32E iba tras de ellos Osaías, y la mitad de los príncipes de Judá, ^12:33y Azarías, Esdras y Mesulam, ^12:34Judá y Benjamín, y Semaías y Jeremías. ^12:35Y de los hijos de los sacerdotes iban con trompetas, Zacarías hijo de Jonatán, hijo de Semaías, hijo de Matanías, hijo de Micaías, hijo de Zacur, hijo de Asaf; ^12:36y sus hermanos Semaías, y Azareel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Natanael, Judá y Hanani, con los instrumentos musicales de David varón de Dios; y Esdras escriba, delante de ellos. ^12:37Y a la puerta de la Fuente, en derecho delante de ellos, subieron por las gradas de la ciudad de David, por la subida del muro, desde la casa de David hasta la puerta de las Aguas al oriente. ^12:38Y el segundo coro iba del lado opuesto, y yo en pos de él, con la mitad del pueblo sobre el muro, desde la torre de los Hornos hasta el muro ancho; ^12:39y desde la puerta de Efraín hasta la puerta Antigua, y a la puerta del Pescado, y la torre de Hananeel, y la torre de Meah, hasta la puerta de las Ovejas; y pararon en la puerta de la Cárcel. ^12:40Pararon luego los dos coros en la Casa de Dios; y yo, y la mitad de los magistrados conmigo; ^12:41y los sacerdotes, Eliaquim, Maasías, Miniamín, Micaías, Elioenai, Zacarías, y Hananías, con trompetas; ^12:42y Maasías, y Semaías, y Eleazar, y Uzi, y Johanán, y Malquías, y Elam, y Ezer. Y los cantores cantaban alto, e Izrahías era el prefecto. ^12:43Y sacrificaron aquel día grandes víctimas, e hicieron alegrías: porque Dios los había recreado con grande contentamiento; se alegraron también las mujeres y los niños; y el alborozo de Jerusalén fue oído desde lejos.

^12:44Y en aquel día fueron puestos varones sobres las cámaras de los tesoros, de las ofrendas, de las primicias, y de los diezmos, para juntar en ellas de los campos de las ciudades las porciones legales para los sacerdotes y levitas: porque era grande el gozo de Judá con respecto a los sacerdotes y levitas que servían. ^12:45Y los cantores y los porteros guardaron la ordenanza de su Dios y la ordenanza de la expiación conforme al estatuto de David y de Salomón su hijo: ^12:46porque desde el tiempo de David y de Asaf, ya de antiguo, había príncipes de cantores, y cántico y alabanza, y acción de gracias a Dios. ^12:47Y todo Israel en días de Zorobabel, y en días de Nehemías, daba raciones a los cantores y a los porteros, cada cosa en su día; consagraban asimismo sus porciones a los levitas, y los levitas consagraban parte a los hijos de Aarón. ^13:1Aquel día se leyó en el Libro de Moisés oyéndolo el pueblo, y fue hallado escrito en él que los amonitas y moabitas no debían entrar jamás en la congregación de Dios; ^13:2por cuanto no salieron a recibir a los hijos de Israel con pan y agua, antes alquilaron a Balaam contra ellos, para que los maldijese; pero nuestro Dios volvió la maldición en bendición. ^13:3Y aconteció que cuando oyeron la Ley, apartaron de Israel a todos los mezclados con extranjeros.

^13:4Y antes de esto, Eliasib sacerdote, siendo superintendente de la cámara de la Casa de nuestro Dios, había emparentado con Tobías, ^13:5y le había hecho una grande cámara, en la cual guardaban antes las ofrendas, y el perfume, y los vasos, y el diezmo del grano, y del vino y del aceite, que estaba mandado darse a los levitas, a los cantores, y a los porteros, y la ofrenda de los sacerdotes. ^13:6Pero a todo esto, yo no estaba en Jerusalén: porque el año treinta y dos de Artajerjes rey de Babilonia, vine al rey; y al cabo de días obtuve permiso del rey. ^13:7Y vine a Jerusalén, entendí el mal que había hecho Eliasib en atención a Tobías, haciendo para él cámara en los patios de la Casa de Dios. ^13:8Y me dolió en gran manera; y eché todos los enseres de la casa de Tobías fuera de la cámara; ^13:9y dije que limpiasen las cámaras, e hice volver allí los utensilios de la Casa de Dios, las ofrendas y el perfume.

^13:10Entendí asimismo que las porciones de los levitas no les habían sido dadas; y que los levitas y cantores que hacían el servicio se habían huido cada uno a su heredad. ^13:11Y reprendí a los magistrados, y dije, “¡¿Por qué está la Casa de Dios abandonada?!”. Y los junté, y los puse en su lugar. ^13:12Y todo Judá trajo el diezmo del grano, del vino y del aceite, a los almacenes. ^13:13Y puse por mayordomos de ellos a Selemías sacerdote, y a Sadoc escriba, y de los levitas, a Pedaías; y a mano de ellos Hanán hijo de Zacur, hijo de Matanías; pues ellos eran tenidos por fieles, y de ellos eran el repartir a sus hermanos. ^13:14“Acuérdate de mí, oh Dios, en orden a esto, y no borres mis misericordias que hice en la casa de mi Dios, y en el servicio en ella”.

^13:19Sucedió, pues, que cuando iba oscureciendo a las puertas de Jerusalén antes del Sábado, dije que se cerrasen las puertas, y ordené que no las abriesen hasta después del Sábado; y puse a las puertas algunos de mis criados, para que en día de Sábado no introdujesen carga.

^13:20Y se quedaron fuera de Jerusalén una y dos veces los negociantes, y los que vendían toda especie de mercancía. ^13:21Y les amonesté y les dije, “¿Por qué os quedáis ustedes delante del muro? ¡Si lo hacéis otra vez, os echaré mano!”. Desde entonces no vinieron en Sábado. ^13:22Y dije a los levitas que se purificasen, y viniesen a guardar las puertas, para santificar el día del Sábado.

Bien que en muchas naciones no hubo rey como él, que era amado de su Dios y Dios lo había puesto por rey sobre todo Israel; y aun a él le hicieron pecar las esposas extranjeras. ^13:27¿Y obedeceremos a ustedes para cometer todo este mal tan grande de prevaricar contra nuestro Dios, tomando esposas extranjeras?”.
