^1:1How the city sits solitary that was once full of people! How has she become as a widow; she that was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces; how has she become tributary!

^1:2She weeps bitterly in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks. Among all her lovers she has no one to comfort her; all her friends have dealt treacherously with her; they have become her enemies.

^1:3Judah has gone into captivity because of affliction, and because of great servitude. She dwells among the heathen; she finds no rest; all her persecutors overtook her between the straits.

Complement  Zion is in distress (1:4 - 6)

^1:4The roads to Zion mourn, because no one comes to the solemn feasts. All her gates are desolate; her priests sigh, her virgins are afflicted, and she is in bitterness.

^1:5Her adversaries are the chief, and her enemies prosper: for Jehovah has afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions; her children have gone into captivity before the enemy.

^1:6And from the daughter of Zion all her beauty has departed; her princes have become like deer that find no pasture, and they are gone without strength before the pursuer.

^1:7Jerusalem remembered in the days of her affliction and of her miseries all her pleasant things that she had in the days of old, when her people fell into the hand of the enemy, and no one helped her; the adversaries saw her, and mocked at her Sabbaths.

^1:8Jerusalem has grievously sinned; therefore she has been removed. All that honored her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness; moreover, she sighs, and turns backward.

^1:9Her filthiness is in her skirts; she does not remember her last end; therefore she came down wonderfully; she had no comforter. O Jehovah, behold my affliction: for the enemy has magnified himself.

^1:10The adversary has spread out his hand upon all her pleasant things: for she has seen that the heathen entered into her Sanctuary, whom you commanded that they should not enter even into your congregation.

^1:11All her people sigh; they seek bread; they have given their pleasant things for food to relieve the soul. See, O Jehovah, and consider: for I have become vile.

¶Complement   Part 2: The City of Zion was judged by Jehovah (1:12 - 22)

Unique   Jehovah has delivered the people of the city of Zion to their enemies in anger (1:12 - 16)

^1:12Is it nothing to you, all you that pass by? Behold, and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow, which has been done to me, with which Jehovah has afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger.

^1:13From above he has sent fire into my bones, and it prevails against them; he has spread a net for my feet; he has turned me back; he has made me desolate and faint all day long.

^1:14The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand; they are wreathed, and come up upon my neck. He has made my strength to fall; the Lord has delivered me into their hands, and I am not able to rise up.

^1:15The Lord has trampled underfoot all my mighty men in the midst of me; he has called an assembly against me to crush my young men; the Lord has trampled the virgin, the daughter of Judah, as in a winepress.

^1:16For these things I weep; my eye, my eye runs down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me. My children are desolate, because the enemy has prevailed.

Complement  Jehovah has judged the city for rebelling against his Commandment (1:17 - 19)

^1:17Zion spreads forth her hands, and there is no one to comfort her. Jehovah has commanded concerning Jacob, that his adversaries should be round about him; Jerusalem is like a menstruous woman among them.

^1:18Jehovah is righteous: for I have rebelled against his Commandment. Please hear, all people, and behold my sorrow; my virgins and my young men have gone into captivity.

^1:19I called for my lovers, but they deceived me. My priests and my elders gave up the spirit in the city, while they sought their food to relieve their souls.

Complement  Jehovah will bring the Day of Jehovah upon the city’s enemies (1:20 - 22)

^1:20Behold, O Jehovah: for I am in distress; my bowels are troubled; my heart is turned within me: for I have grievously rebelled. Abroad the sword bereaves; at home it is like death.

^1:21They have heard that I sigh; there is no one to comfort me. All my enemies have heard of my trouble; they are glad that you have done it. You will bring the Day of Jehovah that you have proclaimed, and they shall be like me.

^1:22Let all their wickedness come before you; and do to them, as you have done to me for all my transgressions: for my sighs are many, and my heart is faint.

^2:1How has the Lord covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger, and cast down the beauty of Israel from Heaven to the earth, and did not remember his footstool in the day of his anger!

^2:2The Lord has swallowed up all the habitations of Jacob, and has not pitied; he has thrown down in his wrath the strongholds of the daughter of Judah; he has brought them down to the ground; he has polluted the kingdom and its princes.

^2:3He has cut off in his fierce anger all the horn of Israel; he has drawn back his right hand from before the enemy, and he burned against Jacob like a flaming fire, which devours round about.

^2:4He has bent his bow like an enemy; he stood with his right hand as an adversary, and slew all that were pleasant to the eye in the Tabernacle of the daughter of Zion; he poured out his fury like fire.

^2:5The Lord was like an enemy; he has swallowed up Israel, he has swallowed up all her palaces; he has destroyed his strongholds, and has increased mourning and lamentation in the daughter of Judah.

Complement   Jehovah has cast off his Tabernacle and the wall of the Daughter of Zion (2:6 - 8)

^2:6And he has violently taken away his Tabernacle as a garden; he has destroyed his places of the assembly; Jehovah has caused the solemn feasts and Sabbaths to be forgotten in Zion, and has despised in the indignation of his anger the king and the priest.

^2:7The Lord has cast off his altar, he has abhorred his Sanctuary, and he has given up into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces; they have made a noise in the House of Jehovah, as in the day of a solemn feast.

^2:8Jehovah has purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion; he has stretched out a line; he has not withdrawn his hand from destroying; therefore he made the rampart and the wall to lament; they languished together.

Complement   Jehovah has turned his back on the Daughter of Zion (2:9 - 11)

^2:9Her gates are sunk into the ground; he has destroyed and broken her bars; her king and her princes are among the Gentiles; the Law is no more; her prophets also find no vision from Jehovah.

^2:10The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground, and keep silence; they have cast up dust upon their heads; they have girded themselves with sackcloth; the virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground.

^2:11My eyes fail with tears, my bowels are troubled, and my liver is poured upon the earth for the destruction of the daughter of my people, because the children and the infants swoon in the streets of the city.

¶Complement   Part 2: The Daughter of Zion was mocked by everyone (2:12 - 22)

^2:12They say to their mothers, “Where is grain and wine?” When they swooned as the wounded in the streets of the city, when their soul was poured out into their mothers’ bosom.

^2:13What thing shall I take to witness for you? What thing shall I liken to you, O daughter of Jerusalem? What shall I equal to you, that I may comfort you, O virgin daughter of Zion? For your breach is great like the sea. Who can heal you?

^2:14Your prophets have seen vain and foolish things for you; and they have not discovered your iniquity, to turn away your captivity; but have seen for you false burdens and causes of banishment.

Complement   All her enemies laugh and rejoice at the Daughter of Jerusalem (2:15 - 17)

^2:15All that pass by clap their hands at you; they whistle and shake their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying, “Is this the city that they call ‘The perfection of beauty’, and ‘The joy of the whole earth’?”

^2:16All your enemies have opened their mouth against you; they whistle and gnash the teeth; they say, “We have swallowed her up; certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found; we have seen it.”

^2:17Jehovah has done that which he had devised; he has fulfilled his Word that he had commanded in the days of old; he has thrown down, and has not pitied; and he has caused your enemy to rejoice over you; he has set up the horn of your adversaries.

Unique   Please have mercy on the Daughter of Zion (2:18 - 22)

^2:18Their heart cried to the Lord, “O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night; give yourself no rest; let not the apple of your eye cease!”

^2:19Arise, cry out in the night; in the beginning of the watches pour out your heart like water before the face of the Lord; lift up your hands toward him for the life of your young children, that faint for hunger in the top of every street.

^2:20Behold, O Jehovah, and consider to whom you have done this. Shall the women eat their offspring, children that they have cuddled? Shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the Sanctuary of the Lord?

^2:21The young and the old lie on the ground in the streets; my virgins and my young men are fallen by the sword; you have slain them in the day of your anger; you have killed, and not pitied.

^2:22You have called as in a solemn day my terrors round about, so that in the Day of Jehovah’s anger no one escaped nor remained; those that I have swaddled and brought up has my enemy consumed.

§Complement   The Man of Zion (3:1 - 66)

¶Complement   Part 1: The Man of Zion has hope in Jehovah (3:1 - 33)

^3:1I am the man that has seen affliction by the rod of his wrath. ^3:2He has led me, and brought me into darkness, but not light. ^3:3Surely against me is he turned; he turns his hand against me all day long.

^3:4My flesh and my skin has he made old; he has broken my bones. ^3:5He has built against me, and surrounded me with gall and travail. ^3:6He has set me in dark places, as they that are dead of old.

^3:7He has hedged me about, so that I cannot get out; he has made my chain heavy. ^3:8Also when I cry and shout, he shuts out my prayer. ^3:9He has enclosed my ways with sawn stone, he has made my paths crooked.

^3:10He was to me like a bear lying in wait, and as a lion in secret places. ^3:11He has turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces; he has made me desolate. ^3:12He has bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.

^3:13He has caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins. ^3:14I was a derision to all my people; their song all day long. ^3:15He has filled me with bitterness; he has made me drunk with wormwood.

Complement   Jehovah’s compassions are new every morning (3:16 - 24)

^3:16He has also broken my teeth with gravel stones; he has covered me with ashes. ^3:17And you have removed my soul far off from peace; I forgot prosperity. ^3:18And I said, “My strength and my hope is perished from Jehovah.”

^3:19Remember my affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall. ^3:20My soul has them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me. ^3:21This I recall to my mind; therefore I have hope.

^3:22It is of Jehovah’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. ^3:23They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. ^3:24“Jehovah is my portion,” says my soul; therefore will I hope in him.

Complement   Jehovah will not cast off forever, but have compassion according to his many mercies (3:25 - 33)

^3:25Jehovah is good to them that wait for him, to the soul that seeks him. ^3:26It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the deliverance of Jehovah. ^3:27It is good for a man that he bears the yoke in his youth.

^3:28He sits alone and keeps silence, because he has borne it upon him. ^3:29He puts his mouth in the dust, if perhaps there may be hope. ^3:30He gives his cheek to him that smites him. He is filled full with reproach.

^3:31For the Lord will not cast off forever; ^3:32but though he causes grief, yet he will have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies: ^3:33for he does not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.

¶Complement   Part 2: The Man of Zion urges repentance (3:34 - 66)

Complement   Let us search and test our ways, and turn again to Jehovah (3:34 - 42)

^3:34To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth, ^3:35to turn aside the right of a man before the face of the most High, ^3:36to subvert a man in his cause, the Lord does not approve.

^3:37Who is he that says, and it comes to pass, when the Lord does not command it? ^3:38Does not both evil and good proceed out of the mouth of the most High? ^3:39Why does a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?

^3:40Let us search and test our ways, and turn again to Jehovah. ^3:41Let us lift up our heart with our hands to God in the heavens. ^3:42We have transgressed and have rebelled; you have not pardoned.

Complement   My eye trickles down with tears until Jehovah looks down from Heaven (3:43 - 51)

^3:43You have covered with anger, and persecuted us; you have slain, and you have not pitied. ^3:44You have covered yourself with a cloud, that our prayer should not pass through. ^3:45You have made us as the offscouring and refuse in the midst of the people.

^3:46All our enemies have opened their mouths against us. ^3:47Fear and a snare has come upon us: desolation and destruction. ^3:48My eye runs down with rivers of water for the destruction of the daughter of my people.

^3:49My eye trickles down, and ceases not, without any intermission, ^3:50until Jehovah looks down, and beholds from Heaven. ^3:51My eye affects my heart because of all the daughters of my city.

Unique   Repay our enemies with your curse (3:52 - 66)

^3:52My enemies hunted me down, like a bird, without cause. ^3:53They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and cast a stone upon me. ^3:54Waters flowed over my head; I said, “I am cut off.”

^3:55I called upon your Name, O Jehovah, out of the low dungeon. ^3:56You have heard my voice; do not hide your ear at my breathing, at my cry. ^3:57You drew near in the day that I called upon you; you said, “Fear not.”

^3:58O Lord, you have pleaded the causes of my soul; you have redeemed my life. ^3:59O Jehovah, you have seen my wrong; judge my cause. ^3:60You have seen all their vengeance and all their imaginations against me.

^3:61You have heard their reproach, O Jehovah, and all their imaginations against me, ^3:62the lips of those that rose up against me, and their device against me all the day. ^3:63Behold their sitting down, and their rising up; I am their music.

^3:64Render to them a recompense, O Jehovah, according to the work of their hands. ^3:65Give them sorrow of heart; your curse unto them. ^3:66Persecute and destroy them in anger from under the heavens of Jehovah!

^4:1How has the gold become dim! How has the most fine gold changed! The stones of the Sanctuary are poured out in the top of every street.

^4:2The precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold, how are they esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the potter!

^4:3Even the sea monsters draw out the breast; they nurse their young ones, but the daughter of my people has become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness.

^4:4The tongue of the nursing child cleaves to the roof of his mouth for thirst; the young children ask bread, and no man breaks it to them.

^4:5They that fed delicately are desolate in the streets; they that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills.

^4:6For the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of the sin of Sodom, that was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands helped her.

^4:7Her Nazarites were purer than snow; they were whiter than milk; they were redder in body than rubies; their polishing was of sapphire.

^4:8But now their visage is blacker than a coal; they are not known in the streets; their skin adheres to their bones; it is withered; it has become like a stick.

^4:9They that are slain with the sword are better than they that are slain with hunger: for these pine away, stricken through for want of the fruits of the field.

^4:11Jehovah has accomplished his fury; he has poured out his fierce anger, and has kindled a fire in Zion, and it has devoured its foundations.

^4:12The kings of the earth and all the inhabitants of the world would not have believed that the adversary and the enemy would have entered into the gates of Jerusalem.

^4:13Because of the sins of her prophets, and the iniquities of her priests, that have shed the blood of the just in the midst of her,

^4:14they have wandered as blind men in the streets; they have polluted themselves with blood, so that men could not touch their garments.

^4:15They cried to them, “Depart! It is unclean; depart, depart, touch it not.” When they fled away and wandered, they said among the heathen, “They shall not stay there anymore.”

^4:16The face of Jehovah has divided them; he will regard them no more. They respected not the persons of the priests; they favored not the elders.

^4:17As for us, our eyes as yet failed for our vain help; in our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save us.

^4:18They hunt our steps, so that we cannot go in our streets. Our end is near; our days are fulfilled: for our end has come.

^4:19Our persecutors are swifter than the eagles of the heaven; they pursued us upon the mountains, and they laid wait for us in the wilderness.

^4:20The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of Jehovah, was taken in their pits, of whom we said, “Under his shadow shall we live among the heathen.”

^4:21Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, that dwells in the land of Uz; the cup also shall pass through to you; you shall be drunk, and shall make yourself naked.

^4:22The punishment of your iniquity has been accomplished, O daughter of Zion; he will not carry you away into captivity anymore. He will visit your iniquity, O daughter of Edom; he will discover your sins.

§Unique   The People of Zion (5:1 - 22)

^1:1¡Cómo está sentada sola la ciudad populosa! La grande entre las naciones se ha vuelto como viuda; la princesa entre las provincias es hecha tributaria.

^1:2Amargamente llora en la noche, y sus lágrimas están en sus mejillas; no tiene quien la consuele de entre todos sus amantes; todos sus amigos la traicionaron, se le volvieron enemigos.

^1:3Judá ha ido en cautiverio, a causa de la aflicción y de la dura servidumbre; ella moró entre las gentes, y no halló descanso; todos sus perseguidores la alcanzaron entre las estrechuras.

El complemento  Sión está en angustia (1:4 - 6)

^1:4Los caminos hasta Sion lloran, porque nadie viene a las fiestas solemnes; todas sus puertas están asoladas, sus sacerdotes gimen, sus vírgenes afligidas, y ella tiene amargura.

^1:5Sus ene migos han sido hechos cabeza, sus enemigos fueron prosperados: porque Jehová la afligió por la multitud de sus rebeliones; sus niños fueron en cautividad delante del enemigo.

^1:6Se fue de la hija de Sión toda su hermosura; sus príncipes fueron como ciervos que no hallan pasto, y anduvieron sin fuerzas delante del perseguidor.

Único  Sión ha sido saqueado por sus enemigos (1:7 - 11)

^1:7Jerusalén, cuando cayó su pueblo en mano del enemigo y no hubo quien le ayudase, se acordó de los días de su aflicción, y de sus rebeliones, y de todas sus cosas deseables que tuvo desde los tiempos antiguos; la miraron los enemigos, y se burlaron de sus Sábados.

^1:8Pecado cometió Jerusalén; por lo cual ella ha sido removida. Todos los que la honraban la han menospreciado: porque vieron su vergüenza; y ella suspira, y se vuelve atrás.

^1:9Su inmundicia está en sus faldas; no se acordó de su postrimería; por tanto ella ha caído asombrosamente, no tiene consolador. Mira, oh Jehová, mi aflicción: porque el enemigo se ha engrandecido.

^1:10Extendió su mano el enemigo a todas sus cosas preciosas; ella ha visto entrar en su santuario las gentes, de las cuales mandaste que no entrasen en tu congregación.

^1:11Todo su pueblo buscó su pan suspirando; dieron por la comida todas sus cosas preciosas, para entretener la vida. Mira, oh Jehová, y ve que estoy abatida.

¶El complemento   Parte 2: La ciudad de Sión fue juzgado por Jehová (1:12 - 22)

Único   Jehová ha entregado el pueblo de la ciudad de Sión a sus enemigos en ira (1:12 - 16)

^1:12¿No os conmueve a cuantos pasáis por el camino? Mirad, y ved si hay dolor como mi dolor que me ha venido: porque Jehová me ha angustiado en el día de su ardiente furor.

^1:13Desde lo alto envió fuego en mis huesos, el cual prevaleció; ha extendido red a mis pies, me volvió atrás, me dejó desolada, y desfallezco todo el día.

^1:14El yugo de mis transgresiones está atado por su mano; ataduras han subido sobre mi cerviz. Ha hecho que falten mis fuerzas; me ha entregado el Señor en manos contra las cuales no podré levantarme.

^1:15El Señor ha hollado a todos mis hombres fuertes en medio de mí; convocó contra mí asamblea para quebrantar mis jóvenes; como lagar ha pisoteado el Señor a la virgen hija de Judá.

^1:16Por esta causa yo lloro; mis ojos, mis ojos fluyen aguas: porque el consolador que debiera reanimar mi alma se alejó de mí; mis hijos están desolados: porque el enemigo prevaleció.

El complemento  Jehová ha juzgado la ciudad para rebelarse contra su Mandamiento (1:17 - 19)

^1:17Sión extendió sus manos, no tiene quien la consuele; Jehová dio mandamiento contra Jacob, que sus enemigos lo rodeasen; Jerusalén fue como una mujer menstruosa entre ellos.

^1:18Jehová es justo; pues yo contra su Palabra me rebelé. Oíd ahora, pueblos todos, y ved mi dolor; mis vírgenes y mis jóvenes fueron en cautiverio.

^1:19Llamé a mis amantes, pero ellos me han engañado. Mis sacerdotes y mis ancianos en la ciudad perecieron, cuando buscaban comida para sí con que entretener su vida.

El complemento  Jehová traerá el día de Jehová sobre los enemigos de la ciudad (1:20 - 22)

^1:20Mira, oh Jehová, que estoy atribulada; mis entrañas hierven, mi corazón se revuelve dentro de mí: porque me rebelé en gran manera; de fuera la espada priva de hijos, en casa señorea la muerte.

^1:21Oyeron que gemía, pero no hay consolador para mí. Todos mis enemigos han oído mi mal, se han alegrado de que tú lo hiciste. Harás venir el día que has anunciado, y serán como yo.

^1:22Venga delante de ti toda su maldad, y haz con ellos como hiciste conmigo por todas mis rebeliones: porque muchos son mis suspiros, y mi corazón desfallece.

§Lo opuesto   La Hija de Sión

¶El complemento   Parte 1: La hija de Sión fue destruida por Jehová (2:9 - 11)

Único   Jehová era como un enemigo a la hija de Sión (2:1 - 5)

^2:1¡Cómo oscureció el Señor en su furor a la hija de Sión! Derribó del Cielo a la tierra la hermosura de Israel, y no se acordó del estrado de sus pies en el día de su ira.

^2:2Destruyó el Señor, y no perdonó; Devoró en su furor todas las tiendas de Jacob; echó por tierra las fortalezas de la hija de Judá, humilló el reino y a sus príncipes.

^2:3Cortó con el furor de su ira todo el cuerno de Israel; Hizo volver atrás su diestra delante del enemigo; y se encendió en Jacob como llama de fuego que ha devorado todo en derredor.

^2:4Entesó su arco como enemigo, afirmó su mano derecha como adversario, y destruyó todo lo que era agradable a la vista; en la tienda de la hija de Sión derramó como fuego su enojo.

^2:5El Señor fue como un enemigo, devoró a Israel; destruyó todos sus palacios, demolió sus fortalezas; y multiplicó en la hija de Judá la tristeza y el lamento.

El complemento   Jehová ha desechado su Tabernáculo y la pared de la hija de Sion (2:6 - 8)

^2:6Y violentamente arrancó su Tabernáculo como de un huerto, destruyó el lugar donde se congregaban; Jehová ha hecho olvidar en Sión las fiestas solemnes y los Sábados, y en el ardor de su ira ha desechado al rey y al sacerdote.

^2:7El Señor desechó su altar, menospreció su Santuario, ha entregado en mano del enemigo los muros de sus palacios; han dado gritos en la Casa de Jehová como en día de fiesta.

^2:8Jehová determinó destruir el muro de la hija de Sión; Extendió el cordel, no retrajo su mano de destruir; hizo, pues, que se lamentara el antemuro y el muro; languidecen juntos.

El complemento   Jehová le ha dado la espalda a la hija de Sion (2:9 - 11)

^2:9Sus puertas fueron echadas por tierra, destruyó y quebrantó sus cerrojos; su rey y sus príncipes están entre los gentiles donde no hay Ley; sus Profetas tampoco hallaron visión de Jehová.

^2:10Se sentaron en tierra, callaron los ancianos de la hija de Sión; echaron polvo sobre sus cabezas, se ciñeron de cilicio; las vírgenes de Jerusalén bajaron sus cabezas a tierra.

^2:11Mis ojos desfallecieron de lágrimas, se conmovieron mis entrañas, mi hígado se derramó por tierra por el quebrantamiento de la hija de mi pueblo, cuando desfallecía el niño y el que mamaba, en las plazas de la ciudad.

¶El complemento   Parte 2: La hija de Sión fue burlado por todos (2:12 - 22)

El complemento   Los pecados del hija de Sión eran grandes (2:12 - 14)

^2:12Decían a sus madres, “¿Dónde está el trigo y el vino?”. Desfallecían como heridos en las calles de la ciudad, derramando sus almas en el regazo de sus madres.

^2:13¿Qué testigo te traeré, o a quién te haré semejante, hija de Jerusalén? ¿A quién te compararé para consolarte, oh virgen hija de Sión? Porque tu quebrantamiento es grande como el mar. ¿Quién te sanará?

^2:14Tus profetas vieron para ti vanidad y locura; y no descubrieron tu pecado para impedir tu cautiverio, sino que te predicaron vanas profecías y extravíos.

El complemento   Todos sus enemigos se ríen y se regocijan hacia la hija de Jerusalén (2:15 - 17)

^2:15Todos los que pasaban por el camino, batieron las manos sobre ti; silbaron, y movieron sus cabezas sobre la hija de Jerusalén, diciendo, “¿Es ésta la ciudad que llamaban, ‘La perfección de la hermosura’, y ‘El gozo de toda la tierra’?”.

^2:16Todos tus enemigos abrieron contra ti su boca, silbaron, y rechinaron los dientes; dijeron, “La hemos devorado; ciertamente éste es el día que esperábamos; lo hemos hallado, lo hemos visto”.

^2:17Jehová ha hecho lo que tenía determinado, ha cumplido su Palabra que él había mandado desde tiempo antiguo; destruyó, y no perdonó; y ha hecho que se alegre sobre ti el enemigo, y ha enaltecido el cuerno de tus adversarios.

Único   Por favor, ten piedad sobre la hija de Sión (2:18 - 22)

^2:18El corazón de ellos clamaba al Señor, “Oh muro de la hija de Sión, corran tus lágrimas como un arroyo día y noche; no descanses, ni cesen las niñas de tus ojos”.

^2:19Levántate, da voces en la noche, en el principio de las vigilias; derrama como agua tu corazón ante la presencia del Señor; alza tus manos hacia él por la vida de tus pequeñitos, que desfallecen de hambre en las entradas de todas las calles.

^2:20Mira, oh Jehová, y considera a quién has hecho así. ¿Han de comer las mujeres su fruto, los pequeñitos de sus crías? ¿Han de ser muertos en el santuario del Señor el sacerdote y el profeta?

^2:21Niños y viejos yacían por tierra en las calles; Mis vírgenes y mis jóvenes cayeron a espada; mataste en el día de tu furor, degollaste, no perdonaste.

^2:22Has llamado, como a día de solemnidad, mis temores de todas partes; y en el día del furor de Jehová no hubo quien escapase ni quedase vivo; los que crié y mantuve, mi enemigo los acabó.

§El complemento  El Hombre de Sión (3:1 - 66)

¶El complemento   Parte 1: El Hombre de Sión tiene esperanza en Jehová (3:1 - 33)

Único   Jehová me ha castigado por mis pecados (3:1 - 15)

^3:1Soy el hombre que ha visto aflicción por la vara de su enojo. ^3:2Me guió y me llevó en tinieblas, y no en luz. ^3:3Ciertamente contra mí volvió y revolvió su mano todo el día.

^3:4Hizo envejecer mi carne y mi piel; quebrantó mis huesos. ^3:5Edificó contra mí, y me cercó de tósigo y de trabajo. ^3:6Me asentó en oscuridades, como los ya muertos de mucho tiempo.

^3:7Me cercó por todos lados, y no puedo salir; ha hecho pesadas mis cadenas. ^3:8Aun cuando clamé y di voces, cerró los oídos a mi oración. ^3:9Cercó mis caminos con piedra tajada, torció mis senderos.

^3:10Como oso que acecha fue para mí, como león en escondrijos. ^3:11Torció mis caminos, y me despedazó; me dejó asolado. ^3:12Su arco entesó, y me puso como blanco a la saeta.

^3:13Hizo entrar en mis entrañas las saetas de su aljaba. ^3:14Fui escarnio a todo mi pueblo, canción de ellos todos los días. ^3:15Me hartó de amarguras, me embriagó de ajenjos.

El complemento   Las misericordias de Jehová son nuevas cada mañana (3:16 - 24)

^3:16Me quebró los dientes con cascajo, me cubrió de ceniza. ^3:17Y mi alma se alejó de la paz, me olvidé del bien. ^3:18Y dije, “Perecieron mis fuerzas, y mi esperanza de Jehová”.

^3:19Acuérdate de mí aflicción y de mi abatimiento, del ajenjo y de la hiel. ^3:20Mi alma aún lo recuerda, y se humilla dentro de mí. ^3:21Esto traigo a mi memoria, por lo cual tengo esperanza.

^3:22Es por la misericordia de Jehová que no hemos sido consumidos: porque nunca decayeron sus misericordias. ^3:23Nuevas son cada mañana; grande es tu fidelidad. ^3:24Mi porción es Jehová, dijo mi alma; por tanto en él esperaré.

El complemento   Jehová no desecha para siempre, pero tener compasión según su mucha misericordia (3:25 - 33)

^3:25Bueno es Jehová a los que en él esperan, al alma que le busca. ^3:26Bueno es esperar en silencio la salvación de Jehová. ^3:27Bueno le es al hombre, llevar el yugo desde su juventud.

^3:28Que se siente solo, y calle: porque es él quien se lo impuso. ^3:29Ponga su boca en el polvo, por si aún hay esperanza. ^3:30Dé la mejilla al que le hiere; y sea colmado de afrenta.

^3:31Porque el Señor no desecha para siempre; ^3:32antes bien, si aflige, también se compadece según la multitud de sus misericordias. ^3:33Porque no aflige ni acongoja de su corazón a los hijos de los hombres.

¶El complemento   Parte 2: El Hombre de Sión insta arrepentimiento (3:34 - 66)

El complemento   Nos dejó busquen y probamos nuestros caminos, y volvámonos a Jehová (3:34 - 42)

^3:34Desmenuzar bajo de sus pies a todos los encarcelados de la tierra, ^3:35hacer apartar el derecho del hombre ante la presencia del Altísimo, ^3:36trastornar al hombre en su causa, el Señor no lo aprueba.

^3:37¿Quién será aquel que diga, que vino algo que el Señor no mandó? ^3:38¿De la boca del Altísimo no sale lo malo y lo bueno? ^3:39¿Por qué murmura el hombre viviente, el hombre en su pecado?

^3:40Examinemos nuestros caminos, y busquemos, y volvámonos a Jehová. ^3:41Levantemos nuestros corazones con las manos a Dios en los cielos. ^3:42Nosotros nos hemos rebelado, y fuimos desleales; tú no perdonaste.

El complemento   Mi ojo se escurre hacia abajo con lágrimas hasta Jehová miró hacia abajo desde el Cielo (3:43 - 51)

^3:43Desplegaste la ira, y nos perseguiste; mataste, no perdonaste. ^3:44Te cubriste de nube, para que no pasase la oración nuestra. ^3:45Nos has vuelto escoria y abominación en medio de los pueblos.

^3:46Todos nuestros enemigos abrieron contra nosotros su boca. ^3:47Temor y lazo nos han sobrevenido, asolamiento y quebranto. ^3:48Ríos de aguas derraman mis ojos, por el quebrantamiento de la hija de mi pueblo.

^3:49Mis ojos destilan, y no cesan: porque no hay alivio, ^3:50hasta que Jehová mire y vea desde los Cielo. ^3:51Mis ojos contristaron mi corazón, por todas las hijas de mi ciudad.

Único   Paga a nuestros enemigos con tu maldición (3:52 - 66)

^3:52Mis enemigos me dieron caza como a ave, sin haber por qué. ^3:53Ataron mi vida en mazmorra, pusieron piedra sobre mí. ^3:54Aguas cubrieron mi cabeza; yo dije, “Muerto soy”.

^3:55Invoqué tu Nombre, oh Jehová, desde la cárcel profunda. ^3:56Oíste mi voz; no escondas tu oído a mi suspiro, a mi clamor. ^3:57Te acercaste el día que te invoqué; dijiste, “No temas”.

^3:58Abogaste, Señor, la causa de mi alma; redimiste mi vida. ^3:59Tú has visto, oh Jehová, mi agravio; defiende mi causa. ^3:60Tú has visto toda su venganza; todos sus pensamientos contra mí.

^3:61Tú has oído el oprobio de ellos, oh Jehová, todas sus maquinaciones contra mí; ^3:62los dichos de los que contra mí se levantaron, y su designio contra mí todo el día. ^3:63Mira su sentarse, y su levantarse; yo soy su canción.

^3:64Dales el pago, oh Jehová, según la obra de sus manos. ^3:65Dales dureza de corazón, tu maldición caiga sobre ellos. ^3:66¡Persíguelos en tu furor, y quebrántalos de debajo de los cielos, oh Jehová!

¶El complemento   Parte 1: Los Hijos de Sión están famélico (4:1 - 11)

Único   Los niños se mueren de hambre para la comida (4:1 - 5)

^4:1¡Cómo se ha oscurecido el oro! ¡Cómo el buen oro se ha demudado! Las piedras del santuario están esparcidas por las encrucijadas de todas las calles.

^4:2Los hijos de Sión, preciados y estimados más que el oro puro, ¡cómo son tenidos por vasos de barro, obra de manos de alfarero!

^4:3Aun los monstruos marinos sacan la teta; y amamantan a sus chiquitos, pero la hija de mi pueblo se ha vuelto cruel, como los avestruces en el desierto.

^4:4La lengua del niño de pecho, se pegó a su paladar, a causa de la sed; los pequeños pidieron pan, y no hubo quien para ellos lo partiese.

^4:5Los que comían delicadamente, asolados fueron en las calles; los que se criaron entre púrpura, abrazaron los muladares.

El complemento   Sus nazarenos parecen esqueletos (4:6 - 8)

^4:6Y se aumentó la iniquidad de la hija de mi pueblo más que el pecado de Sodoma, que fue derribada en un momento, sin que manos asentaran sobre ella.

^4:7Sus nazareos fueron más puros que la nieve, más blancos que la leche. Sus cuerpos más rubicundos que los rubíes, más bellos que el zafiro.

^4:8Oscuro más que la negrura es su aspecto; no los conocen por las calles; su piel está pegada a sus huesos, seca como un palo.

El complemento   Las mujeres lastimoso comieron a sus propios hijos (4:9 - 11)

^4:9Más dichosos fueron los muertos a espada que los muertos por el hambre: porque éstos murieron poco a poco por falta de los frutos de la tierra.

^4:10Las manos de las mujeres piadosas cocieron a sus propios hijos; les sirvieron de comida en el quebrantamiento de la hija de mi pueblo.

^4:12Jehová cumplió su enojo, derramó el ardor de su ira; y encendió fuego en Sión, que consumió sus cimientos.

¶El complemento   Parte 2: Los Hijos de Sión están contaminados (4:12 - 22)

El complemento   Los Hijos de Sión contaminado ellos mismos con sangre (4:12 - 14)

^4:12Nunca los reyes de la tierra, ni todos los que habitan en el mundo, creyeron que el enemigo y el adversario entrarían por las puertas de Jerusalén.

^4:13Es por los pecados de sus profetas, por las maldades de sus sacerdotes, que derramaron en medio de ella la sangre de los justos.

^4:14Titubearon como ciegos en las calles, fueron contaminados con sangre, de modo que no pudiesen tocar a sus vestiduras.

El complemento   El rostro de Jehová los ha dividido; él los mirará no más (4:15 - 17)

^4:15“¡Apartaos! ¡Inmundos!”. les gritaban, “¡Apartaos, apartaos, no toquéis!”. Cuando huyeron y fueron dispersados, dijeron entre las naciones, “Nunca más morarán aquí”.

^4:16La ira de Jehová los apartó; no los mirará más. No respetaron la faz de los sacerdotes, ni tuvieron compasión de los viejos.

^4:17Aun han desfallecido nuestros ojos tras nuestro vano socorro; en nuestra esperanza aguardamos a una nación que no puede salvar.

Único   Jehová visitará la iniquidad de Edom (4:18 - 22)

^4:18Cazaron nuestros pasos para que no anduviésemos por nuestras calles; se cercó nuestro fin, se cumplieron nuestros días: porque llegó nuestro fin.

^4:19Nuestros perseguidores fueron más ligeros que las águilas del cielo; sobre los montes nos persiguieron, en el desierto nos tendieron emboscada.

^4:20El aliento de nuestra nariz, el ungido de Jehová fue apresado en sus fosos; de quien habíamos dicho, “A su sombra tendremos vida entre las naciones”.

^4:21Gózate y alégrate, hija de Edom, la que habitas en tierra de Uz; la copa también pasará a ti; te embriagarás y te desnudarás.

^4:22Se ha cumplido el castigo de tu iniquidad, oh hija de Sión; nunca más te hará llevar cautiva. Él castigará tu iniquidad, oh hija de Edom; pondrá al descubierto tus pecados.

^5:7Nuestros padres pecaron, y han muerto; y nosotros llevamos su castigo.

^5:8Siervos se enseñorearon de nosotros; no hay quien de su mano nos libre.

^5:9Con peligro de nuestras vidas traíamos nuestro pan a causa de la espada del desierto.

^5:10Nuestra piel se ennegreció como un horno a causa del ardor del hambre.

^5:11Violaron a las mujeres en Sión, a las vírgenes en las ciudades de Judá.

^5:15Cesó el gozo de nuestro corazón; nuestra danza se cambió en luto.

^5:16Cayó la corona de nuestra cabeza. ¡Ay ahora de nosotros: porque pecamos!

^5:17Por esto fue entristecido nuestro corazón, por esto se entenebrecieron nuestros ojos.

^5:18Por el monte de Sión que está asolado; zorras andan por él.

^5:19Pero tú, Jehová, permanecerás para siempre; tu trono permanece desde generación a generación.

^5:20¿Por qué te olvidarás para siempre de nosotros, y nos dejarás por largos días?

^5:21Vuélvenos, oh Jehová, a ti, y nos volveremos; renueva nuestros días como al principio.

^5:22Porque nos has desechado; en gran manera te has airado contra nosotros.
