Then Elisha said, “Shoot.” And he shot. And he said, “The arrow of Jehovah’s deliverance, and the arrow of deliverance from Syria: for you shall smite the Syrians in Aphek, until you have consumed them.” ^13:18And he said, “Take the arrows.” And he took them. And he said to the king of Israel, “Smite upon the ground.” And he smote three times, and stopped. ^13:19And the man of God was angry with him, and said, “You should have smitten five or six times, then you would have beaten Syria until you had consumed it! Whereas now you shall beat Syria but three times.”

And the bands of the Moabites invaded the land at the coming in of the year. ^13:21And it came to pass, as they were burying a man, that, behold, they spied a band of men; and they cast the man into the grave of Elisha. Three times did Joash defeat him, and recovered the cities of Israel.

¶Unique Joash king of Israel proved to be a better warrior than Amaziah king of Judah (2 Kings 14:1 - 22)

And his mother’s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. ^14:3And he did right in the sight of Jehovah, yet not like David his father: he did according to all things as Joash his father did. ^14:4Nevertheless the high places were not taken away; as yet the people sacrificed and burned incense on the high places. ^14:5And it came to pass, as soon as the kingdom was confirmed in his hand, that he executed his servants which had killed the king his father. ^14:6But he did not execute the children of the murderers: according to that which is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, in which Jehovah commanded, saying, “The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor shall the children be put to death for the fathers; but every man shall be put to death for his own sin.”

^14:7He slew ten thousand of Edom in the valley of salt, and took Selah by war, and called the name of it Joktheel until this day. ^14:8Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, the son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, “Come, let us look one another in the face.” ^14:9And Jehoash the king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, “The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son to be his wife’; and a wild beast passed by that was in Lebanon, and trampled down the thistle. ^14:10You have indeed smitten Edom, and your heart has lifted you up; glory of that, and stay at home: for why should you meddle to your harm, that you should fall, both you and Judah with you?” ^14:11But Amaziah would not listen; therefore Jehoash king of Israel went up; and he and Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at Beth-shemesh, which belongs to Judah. ^14:12And Judah was put to the worse before Israel; and they fled every man to their tents. ^14:13And Jehoash king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Jehoash the son of Ahaziah, at Beth-shemesh; and came to Jerusalem, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits. ^14:14And he took all the gold and silver, and all the vessels that were found in the House of Jehovah, and in the treasures of the king’s house, and hostages, and returned to Samaria.

¶Opposite Jotham king of Judah was a good man, but accomplished very little for Jehovah (2 Kings 15:32 - 38)

^15:32In the second year of Pekah the son of Remaliah king of Israel, Jotham the son of Uzziah king of Judah began to reign. ^15:33He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jerusha, the daughter of Zadok.

^16:1In the seventeenth year of Pekah the son of Remaliah, Ahaz the son of Jotham king of Judah began to reign. ^16:2Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign; and reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. And he did not do right in the sight of Jehovah his God, like David his father; ^16:3but walked in the way of the kings of Israel; moreover, and he made his son to pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the heathen, whom Jehovah cast out from before the children of Israel. ^16:4And he sacrificed and burned incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.

^16:5Then Rezin king of Syria and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to war; and they besieged Ahaz, but could not overcome him. ^16:6At that time Rezin king of Syria recovered Elath to Syria, and drove the Jews from Elath; and the Syrians came to Elath, and dwelt there until this day. ^16:7So Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, saying, “I am your servant and your son. Come up, and save me out of the hand of the king of Syria, and out of the hand of the king of Israel, which rise up against me.” ^16:8And Ahaz took the silver and gold that was found in the House of Jehovah, and in the treasures of the king’s house, and sent it for a present to the king of Assyria. ^16:9And the king of Assyria gave heed to him: for the king of Assyria went up against Damascus, and took it, and carried the people of it captive to Kir, and slew Rezin.

^16:10And king Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, and saw an altar that was at Damascus; and king Ahaz sent to Urijah the priest the design of the altar, and its pattern, according to all its workmanship. ^16:11And Urijah the priest built an altar according to all that king Ahaz had sent from Damascus. So Urijah the priest made it before king Ahaz came from Damascus. ^16:12And when the king came from Damascus, the king saw the altar; and the king approached to the altar, and offered on it. ^16:13And he burned his burnt offering and his meal offering, and poured his drink offering, and sprinkled the blood of his peace offerings upon the altar. ^16:14And he also brought the bronze altar, which was before Jehovah, from the forefront of the House, from between the altar and the House of Jehovah, and put it on the north side of the altar.

^16:15And king Ahaz commanded Urijah the priest, saying, “Upon the great altar burn the morning burnt offering, and the evening meal offering, and the king’s burnt sacrifice, and his meal offering, with the burnt offering of all the people of the land, and their meal offering, and their drink offerings; and sprinkle upon it all the blood of the burnt offering, and all the blood of the sacrifice; and the bronze altar shall be for me to inquire by.” ^16:16Urijah the priest did in this manner, according to all that king Ahaz commanded. ^16:17And king Ahaz cut off the borders of the bases, and removed the laver from off them; and took down the sea from off the bronze oxen that were under it, and put it upon a pavement of stones. ^16:18And the covert for the Sabbath that they had built in the House, and the king’s entry outside, did he turn from the House of Jehovah for the king of Assyria.

^17:19Also Judah did not keep the Commandments of Jehovah their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made. ^17:20And Jehovah rejected all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of plunderers, until he had cast them out of his sight: ^17:21for he tore Israel from the house of David; and they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king; and Jeroboam drove Israel from following Jehovah, and made them sin a great sin: ^17:22for the children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did; they departed not from them, ^17:23until Jehovah removed Israel out of his sight, as he had said by all his servants the prophets. So Israel was carried away out of their own land to Assyria until this day.

^17:40Nevertheless they did not listen but they did after their former manner. ^17:41So these nations both feared Jehovah, and served their carved images, both their children, and their children’s children; as their fathers did, so do they until this day.

^17:19Pero ni aun Judá guardó los Mandamientos de Jehová su Dios; antes anduvieron en los estatutos de Israel, los cuales habían ellos hecho. ^17:20Y desechó Jehová toda la simiente de Israel, y los afligió, y los entregó en manos de saqueadores, hasta echarlos de su presencia: ^17:21porque separó a Israel de la casa de David, y hicieron rey a Jeroboam hijo de Nabat; y Jeroboam apartó a Israel de en pos de Jehová, y les hizo cometer gran pecado. ^17:22Y los hijos de Israel anduvieron en todos los pecados de Jeroboam que él hizo, sin apartarse de ellos; ^17:23hasta que Jehová quitó a Israel de delante de su rostro, como él lo había dicho por medio de todos los Profetas sus siervos; e Israel fue llevado cautivo de su tierra a Asiria, hasta hoy.

^17:25Y aconteció al principio, cuando comenzaron a habitar allí, que no temiendo ellos a Jehová, envió Jehová contra ellos leones que mataron a muchos de ellos. ^17:26Entonces dijeron al rey de Asiria, “Las gentes que tú trasladaste y pusiste en las ciudades de Samaria, no conocen la costumbre del Dios de aquella tierra, y él ha echado leones en medio de ellos, y he aquí los matan: porque no conocen la costumbre del Dios de la tierra”. ^17:27Entonces el rey de Asiria mandó, diciendo, “Llevad allí a alguno de los sacerdotes que trajeron de allá, y vayan y habiten allí, y les enseñen la costumbre del Dios del país”. ^17:28Y vino uno de los sacerdotes que habían trasportado de Samaria, y habitó en Betel, y les enseñó cómo habían de temer a Jehová.

^17:29Sin embargo, cada nación hizo sus propios dioses, y los pusieron en las casas de los lugares altos que habían hecho los de Samaria; cada nación en su ciudad donde habitaba. ^17:30Los de Babilonia hicieron a Sucot-benot, y los de Cuta hicieron a Nergal, y los de Hamat hicieron a Asima; ^17:31los aveos hicieron a Nibhaz y a Tartac; y los de Sefarvaim quemaban sus hijos en el fuego como ofrenda a Adramelec y a Anamelec, dioses de Sefarvaim.

^17:32Y temían a Jehová; e hicieron del pueblo bajo sacerdotes de los lugares altos, quienes sacrificaban para ellos en los templos de los lugares altos. ^17:33Temían a Jehová, y honraban a sus dioses, según la costumbre de las gentes de donde habían sido trasladados. ^17:34Hasta hoy hacen como entonces; que ni temen a Jehová, ni guardan sus Estatutos, ni sus Ordenanzas, ni hacen según la Ley y los Mandamientos que prescribió Jehová a los hijos de Jacob, al cual puso el nombre de Israel; ^17:35con los cuales había Jehová hecho Pacto, y les mandó, diciendo, “No temeréis a otros dioses, ni los adoraréis, ni les serviréis, ni les ofreceréis sacrificios. ^17:36Pero a Jehová, que os sacó de tierra de Egipto con grande poder y brazo extendido, a éste temeréis, y a éste adoraréis, y a éste haréis sacrificio. ^17:37Los Estatutos, y Derechos, y Ley, y Mandamientos, que os dio por escrito, cuidaréis siempre de ponerlos por obra, y no temeréis a dioses ajenos. ^17:38Y no olvidaréis el pacto que hice con ustedes; ni temeréis a dioses ajenos. ^17:39Pero temed a Jehová vuestro Dios, y él os librará de mano de todos vuestros enemigos”.

^17:40Pero ellos no escucharon; antes hicieron según su costumbre antigua. ^17:41Así temieron a Jehová aquellas gentes, y juntamente sirvieron a sus ídolos; y como hicieron sus padres, así hacen hasta hoy sus hijos y sus nietos.
