Kings, Chapter 2.3: Jehovah sent Jehu to judge the house of Ahab the king of Israel (2 Kings 8:1 - 12:21)

Introduction: Elisha sent the wealthy Gentile woman to sojourn outside of Israel and told Hazael that he would become king of Syria (2 Kings 8:1 - 15)

¶Opposite   Jehovah brought the king of Israel and the wealthy woman together at the same moment that he was asking about Elisha’s miracles (2 Kings 8:1 - 6)

^8:2And the woman arose; and she did after the saying of the man of God.

And she went with her household, and sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years.

^8:3And it came to pass at the seven years’ end, that the woman returned out of the land of the Philistines; and she went forth to cry to the king for her house and for her land. ^8:4And the king talked with Gehazi the servant of the man of God, saying, “Please, tell me all the great things that Elisha has done.”

^8:5And it came to pass, as he was telling the king how he had restored a dead body to life, that, behold, the woman, whose son he had restored to life, cried to the king for her house and for her land. And Gehazi said, “My lord, O king, this is the woman; and this is her son, whom Elisha restored to life.” ^8:6And when the king asked the woman, she told him. So the king appointed to her a certain officer, saying, “Restore all that was hers, and all the fruits of the field since the day that she left the land, even until now.”

^8:7And Elisha came to Damascus. And Ben-hadad the king of Syria was sick; and it was told him, saying, “The man of God has come here.” ^8:8And the king said to Hazael, “Take a present in your hand; and go, meet the man of God, and inquire of Jehovah by him, saying, ‘Shall I recover of this disease?’”

^8:9So Hazael went to meet him, and took a present with him, even of every good thing of Damascus, forty camels’ burden; and came and stood before him, and said, “Your son Ben-hadad, king of Syria, has sent me to you, saying, ‘Shall I recover of this disease?’” ^8:10And Elisha said to him, “Go, say to him, ‘You may certainly recover’; nevertheless Jehovah has shown me that he shall surely die.”

^8:11And he settled his countenance steadfastly, until he was ashamed; and the man of God wept. ^8:12And Hazael said, “Why does my lord weep?” And he answered, “Because I know the evil that you will do to the children of Israel: you will set their strongholds on fire; and you will slay their young men with the sword, and will dash their children, and rip up their women with child.” ^8:13And Hazael said, “But what, is your servant a dog, that he should do this great thing?” And Elisha answered, “Jehovah has shown me that you shall be king over Syria.”

^8:14So he left Elisha, and came to his master, who said to him, “What did Elisha say to you?” And he answered, “He told me that you would surely recover.”

^8:15And it came to pass on the next day, that he took a thick cloth, and dipped it in water, and spread it on his face, so that he died; and Hazael reigned in his place.

^8:16And in the fifth year of Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel, Jehoshaphat then being king of Judah, Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah began to reign. ^8:17He was thirty-two years old when he began to reign; and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem.

^8:18And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab did: for the daughter of Ahab was his wife; and he did evil in the sight of Jehovah. ^8:19Yet Jehovah would not destroy Judah for David his servant’s sake, as he promised him to give him always a light, and to his children.

^8:20In his days Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah, and made a king over themselves. ^8:21So Joram went over to Zair, and all the chariots with him; and he rose by night, and smote the Edomites which surrounded him, and the captains of the chariots; and the people fled into their tents. ^8:22Yet Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah until this day. Then Libnah revolted at the same time. ^8:23And the rest of the acts of Joram, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? ^8:24And Joram slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David; and Ahaziah his son reigned in his place.

^8:25In the twelfth year of Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel, Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah began to reign. ^8:26Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he began to reign; and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Athaliah, the daughter of Omri king of Israel. ^8:27And he walked in the way of the house of Ahab, and did evil in the sight of Jehovah, as the house of Ahab did: for he was the son-in-law of the house of Ahab. ^8:28And he went with Joram the son of Ahab to the war against Hazael king of Syria in Ramoth-gilead; and the Syrians wounded Joram. ^8:29And king Joram went back to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds that the Syrians had given him at Ramah, when he fought against Hazael king of Syria. And Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Joram the son of Ahab in Jezreel, because he was sick.

^9:1And Elisha the prophet called one of the children of the prophets, and said to him, “Gather your robe around your waist, and take this box of oil in your hand, and go to Ramoth-gilead. ^9:2And when you come there, look out there Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi; and go in, and make him rise up from among his brethren, and escort him to an inner chamber. ^9:3Then take the box of oil, and pour it on his head, and say, ‘Thus says Jehovah: ‘I have anointed you king over Israel.’’ Then open the door and flee, and do not delay.” ^9:4So the young man, even the young man the prophet, went to Ramoth-gilead. ^9:5And when he came, behold, the captains of the army were sitting; and he said, “I have an errand to you, O captain.” And Jehu said, “To which of all us?” And he said, “To you, O captain.” ^9:6And he arose, and went into the house; and he poured the oil on his head, and said to him, “Thus says Jehovah God of Israel: ‘I have anointed you king over the people of Jehovah, even over Israel. ^9:7And you shall smite the house of Ahab your master, that I may avenge the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of Jehovah, at the hand of Jezebel: ^9:8for the whole house of Ahab shall perish; and I will cut off from Ahab all the males, and him that is shut up and left in Israel; ^9:9and I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah; ^9:10and the dogs shall eat Jezebel in the portion of Jezreel, and there shall be none to bury her.’” And he opened the door, and fled. ^9:11Then Jehu came forth to the servants of his lord; and one of them said to him, “Is everything well? Why did this madman come to you?” And he said to them, “You know the man, and his message.” ^9:12And they said, “It is not true; tell us now.” And he said, “Thus and thus he spoke to me, saying, ‘Thus says Jehovah: ‘I have anointed you king over Israel.’’” ^9:13Then they hurried, and took every man his garment, and put it under him on the top of the stairs, and blew with trumpets, saying, “Jehu is king!” ^9:14So Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi conspired against Joram.

¶Opposite   Jehu executed both Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah at Jezreel (2 Kings 9:14b - 29)

Now Joram had kept Ramoth-gilead, he and all Israel, because of Hazael king of Syria. ^9:15But king Joram had returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds that the Syrians had given him, when he fought with Hazael king of Syria.

And Jehu said, “If it is your minds, then let none go forth nor escape out of the city to go to tell it in Jezreel.” ^9:16So Jehu rode in a chariot, and went to Jezreel: for Joram lay there.

And Ahaziah king of Judah came down to see Joram. ^9:17And a watchman stood on the tower in Jezreel; and he spied the company of Jehu as he came, and said, “I see a company.” And Joram said, “Take a horseman, and send to meet them, and let him say, ‘Is it peace?’” ^9:18So one man went on horseback to meet him, and said, “Thus says the king: ‘Is it peace?’” And Jehu said, “What have you to do with peace? Turn behind me.” And the watchman told, saying, “The messenger came to them, but he does not come again.”

^9:19Then he sent out a second on horseback, which came to them, and said, “Thus says the king: ‘Is it peace?’” And Jehu answered, “What have you to do with peace? Turn behind me.” ^9:20And the watchman told, saying, “He came even to them, and does not come again; and the driving is like the driving of Jehu the son of Nimshi: for he drives furiously.”

^9:21And Joram said, “Make ready.” And his chariot was made ready; and Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah went out, each in his chariot, and they went out against Jehu, and met him in the portion of Naboth the Jezreelite. ^9:22And it came to pass, when Joram saw Jehu, that he said, “Is it peace, Jehu?” And he answered, “What peace, so long as the whoredoms of your mother Jezebel and her witchcrafts are so many?” ^9:23And Joram turned his hands, and fled, and said to Ahaziah, “There is treachery, O Ahaziah!” ^9:24And Jehu drew a bow with his full strength, and smote Jehoram between his arms, and the arrow went out at his heart, and he sank down in his chariot. ^9:25Then Jehu said to Bidkar his captain, “Take him up, and cast him in the portion of the field of Naboth the Jezreelite: for remember how that, when you and I rode together after Ahab his father, Jehovah laid this burden upon him: ^9:26‘‘Surely I have seen yesterday the blood of Naboth, and the blood of his sons,’ says Jehovah; ‘and I will repay you in this plot of ground,’ says Jehovah.’ Now therefore take and cast him into the plot of Naboth, according to the Word of Jehovah.” ^9:27But when Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled by the way of the garden house. And Jehu followed after him, and said, “Smite him also in the chariot.” And they did so at the going up to Gur, which is by Ibleam. And he fled to Megiddo, and died there. ^9:28And his servants carried him in a chariot to Jerusalem, and buried him in his grave with his fathers in the city of David. ^9:29And it was in the eleventh year of Joram the son of Ahab, that Ahaziah began to reign over Judah.

¶Complement   Jehu destroyed Jezebel and seventy sons of Ahab (1 Kings 9:30 - 10:11)

^9:30And when Jehu came to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her face, and adorned her head, and looked out at a window. ^9:31And as Jehu entered in at the gate, she said, “Did Zimri have peace, who slew his master?” ^9:32And he lifted up his face to the window, and said, “Who is on my side? Who?!” And two or three eunuchs looked out to him. ^9:33And he said, “Throw her down!” So they threw her down; and some of her blood was sprinkled on the wall, and on the horses; and he trampled her under foot.

^9:34And when he came in, he ate and drank; and said, “Go, see now this cursed woman, and bury her: for she is a king’s daughter.” ^9:35And they went to bury her, but they found no more of her than the skull, the feet, and the palms of her hands; ^9:36therefore they came again, and told him.

And he said, “This is the Word of Jehovah, which he spoke by his servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying, ‘In the portion of Jezreel shall dogs eat the flesh of Jezebel; ^9:37and the carcass of Jezebel shall be as dung upon the face of the field in the portion of Jezreel, so that they shall not say, ‘This is Jezebel.’’”

^10:1And Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. And Jehu wrote letters, and sent to Samaria, to the rulers of Jezreel, to the elders, and to them that brought up Ahab’s children, saying, ^10:2“Now as soon as this letter comes to you, seeing your master’s sons are with you, and there are with you chariots and horses, a fortified city also, and armor, ^10:3look even out the best and fittest of your master’s sons, and set him on his father’s throne, and fight for your master’s house.” ^10:4But they were exceedingly afraid, and said, “Behold, two kings did not stand before him; how then shall we stand?” ^10:5And he that was over the house, and he that was over the city, the elders also, and the bringers up of the children, sent to Jehu, saying, “We are your servants, and will do all that you shall tell us; we will not make any king: do that which is good in your eyes.”

^10:6Then he wrote a letter the second time to them, saying, “If you are mine, and if you will give heed to my voice, take the heads of the men your master’s sons, and come to me to Jezreel by tomorrow this time.” Now the king’s sons, being seventy men, were with the great men of the city, which brought them up. ^10:7And it came to pass, when the letter came to them, that they took the king’s sons, and executed the seventy men, and put their heads in baskets, and sent them to Jezreel to him. ^10:8And a messenger came, and told him, saying, “They have brought the heads of the king’s sons.” And he said, “Lay them in two heaps at the entering in of the gate until the morning.” ^10:9And it came to pass in the morning, that he went out, and stood, and said to all the people, “You are righteous! Behold, I conspired against my master, and killed him; but who killed all these? ^10:10Know now that nothing of the Word of Jehovah shall fall to the earth, which Jehovah spoke concerning the house of Ahab: for Jehovah has done that which he spoke by his servant Elijah.” ^10:11So Jehu executed all that remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men, and his kinfolks, and his priests, until he left him none remaining.

¶Complement   Jehu destroyed the rest of Ahab’s family out of Samaria and Baal worship in Israel (2 Kings 10:12 - 28)

^10:12And he arose and departed, and came to Samaria. And as he was at the shearing house in the way, ^10:13Jehu met with the brethren of Ahaziah king of Judah, and said, “Who are you?” And they answered, “We are the brethren of Ahaziah; and we go down to salute the children of the king and the children of the queen.” ^10:14And he said, “Take them alive.” And they took them alive, and executed them at the pit of the shearing house, even forty-two men; neither did he leave any of them.

^10:15And when he left there, he happened upon Jehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him; and he greeted him, and said to him, “Is your heart right, as my heart is with your heart?” And Jehonadab answered, “It is.” “If it is, give me your hand.” And he gave him his hand; and he took him up to him into the chariot. ^10:16And he said, “Come with me, and see my zeal for Jehovah.” So they made him ride in his chariot.

^10:17And when he came to Samaria, he executed all that remained to Ahab in Samaria, until he had destroyed him, according to the saying of Jehovah, which he spoke to Elijah.

^10:18And Jehu gathered all the people together, and said to them, “Ahab served Baal a little, but Jehu shall serve him much. ^10:19Now therefore call to me all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests; let none be missing: for I have a great sacrifice to do to Baal; whosoever shall be wanting, he shall not live.” But Jehu did it in subtlety, to the intent that he might destroy the worshipers of Baal. ^10:20And Jehu said, “Proclaim a solemn assembly for Baal.” And they proclaimed it. ^10:21And Jehu sent through all Israel; and all the worshipers of Baal came, so that there was not a man left that did not come. And they came into the house of Baal; and the house of Baal was full from one end to another. ^10:22And he said to him that was in charge of the wardrobe, “Bring forth vestments for all the worshipers of Baal.” And he brought them forth vestments. ^10:23And Jehu went, and Jehonadab the son of Rechab, into the house of Baal, and said to the worshipers of Baal, “Search, and look that there are here with you none of the servants of Jehovah, but only the worshipers of Baal.” ^10:24And when they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings, Jehu appointed eighty men outside, and said, “If any of the men whom I have brought into your hands escape, he that lets him go, his life shall be for the life of him.” ^10:25And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, that Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, “Go in, and slay them: let none come forth.” And they smote them with the edge of the sword; and the guard and the captains cast them out, and went to the city of the house of Baal. ^10:26And they brought forth the images out of the house of Baal, and burned them. ^10:27And they broke down the image of Baal, and broke down the house of Baal, and made it a toilet house until this day.

^10:28Thus Jehu destroyed Baal out of Israel.

¶Unique   Jehu failed to eliminate the worship of the golden calves in Dan and Bethel (2 Kings 10:29 - 36)

^10:29Nevertheless from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, Jehu departed not from after them, namely, the golden calves that were in Bethel, and that were in Dan.

^10:30And Jehovah said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in executing that which is right in my eyes, and have done to the house of Ahab according to all that was in my heart, your children of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.”

^10:31But Jehu took no heed to walk in the Law of Jehovah God of Israel with all his heart: for he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam, which made Israel to sin.

^10:32In those days Jehovah began to cut Israel short; and Hazael smote them in all the territory of Israel: ^10:33from Jordan eastward, all the land of Gilead: the Gadites, the Reubenites, and the Manassites, from Aroer, which is by the river Arnon, even Gilead and Bashan.

^10:34Now the rest of the acts of Jehu, and all that he did, and all his might, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? ^10:35And Jehu slept with his fathers; and they buried him in Samaria. And Jehoahaz his son reigned in his place. ^10:36And the time that Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty-eight years.

^11:1And when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal seed. ^11:2But Jehosheba, the daughter of king Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah and stole him from among the king’s sons which were slain; and they hid him, even him and his nurse, in the bedroom from Athaliah, so that he was not slain. ^11:3And he was with her hidden in the House of Jehovah six years.

And Athaliah reigned over the land.

^11:4And the seventh year Jehoiada sent and brought the rulers over hundreds, with the captains and the guard, and brought them to him into the House of Jehovah; and made a covenant with them, and took an oath of them in the House of Jehovah, and showed them the king’s son. ^11:5And he commanded them, saying, “This is the thing that you shall do: a third part of you that enter in on the Sabbath shall even be keepers of the watch of the king’s house, ^11:6and a third part shall be at the gate of Sur, and a third part at the gate behind the guard. So you shall keep the watch of the house, so that it is not broken down. ^11:7And two parts of you all that go forth on the Sabbath, even they shall keep the watch of the House of Jehovah round about the king. ^11:8And you shall surround the king, every man with his weapons in his hand; and he that comes within the ranks of soldiers, let him be slain; and you be with the king as he goes out and as he comes in.” ^11:9And the captains over the hundreds did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest commanded; and they took every man his men that were to come in on the Sabbath, with them that should go out on the Sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest. ^11:10And the priest gave to the captains over hundreds king David’s spears and shields, that were in the Temple of Jehovah. ^11:11And the guard stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, round about the king, from the right corner of the Temple to the left corner of the Temple, along by the altar and the Temple. ^11:12And he brought forth the king’s son, and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony; and they made him king, and anointed him; and they clapped their hands, and said, “Long live the king!”

^11:13And when Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she came to the people into the Temple of Jehovah. ^11:14And when she looked, behold, the king stood by a pillar, as the manner was, and the princes and the trumpeters by the king, and all the people of the land rejoiced, and blew with trumpets; and Athaliah tore her clothes, and cried, “Treason; Treason!” ^11:15But Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds, the officers of the army, and said to them, “Take her outside under guard; and him that follows her execute with the sword.” For the priest had said, “Let her not be executed in the House of Jehovah.” ^11:16And they laid hands on her; and she went by the way by which the horses came into the king’s house; and she was executed there.

^11:17And Jehoiada made a covenant between Jehovah and the king and the people that they should be Jehovah’s people; also between the king and the people. ^11:18And all the people of the land went into the house of Baal, and broke it down; they thoroughly broke his altars and his images into pieces, and executed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest appointed officers over the House of Jehovah. ^11:19And he took the rulers over hundreds, and the captains, and the guard, and all the people of the land; and they brought down the king from the House of Jehovah, and came by the way of the gate of the guard to the king’s house. And he sat on the throne of the kings. ^11:20And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was in quiet; and they executed Athaliah with the sword beside the king’s house.

¶Complement   Jehoash king of Judah repaired the House of Jehovah (2 Kings 11:21 - 12:21)

^11:21Jehoash was seven years old when he began to reign. ^12:1In the seventh year of Jehu, Jehoash began to reign; and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Zibiah of Beer-sheba.

^12:2And Jehoash did right in the sight of Jehovah all his days in which Jehoiada the priest instructed him. ^12:3But the high places were not taken away: the people still sacrificed and burned incense in the high places.

^12:4And Jehoash said to the priests, “All the money of the dedicated things that is brought into the House of Jehovah, even the money of everyone that passes the account, the money that every man is set at, and all the money that comes into any man’s heart to bring into the House of Jehovah, ^12:5let the priests take it to them, every man of his acquaintance; and let them repair the breaches of the House, wheresoever any breach shall be found.” ^12:6But it was so, that in the twenty-third year of king Jehoash the priests had not repaired the breaches of the House. ^12:7Then king Jehoash called for Jehoiada the priest, and the other priests, and said to them, “Why do you not repair the breaches of the House? Now therefore receive no more money of your acquaintance, but deliver it for the breaches of the House.” ^12:8And the priests agreed to receive no more money of the people; neither to repair the breaches of the House. ^12:9But Jehoiada the priest took a chest, and bored a hole in the lid of it, and set it beside the altar, on the right side as one comes into the House of Jehovah; and the priests that kept the door put in it all the money that was brought into the House of Jehovah. ^12:10And it was so, when they saw that there was much money in the chest, that the king’s scribe and the high priest came up, and they tied up in bags, and counted the money that was found in the House of Jehovah. ^12:11And they gave the money, being tallied, into the hands of them that did the work, that had the oversight of the House of Jehovah; and they laid it out to the carpenters and builders, that worked upon the House of Jehovah, ^12:12and to masons, and cutters of stone; and to buy timber and cut stone to repair the breaches of the House of Jehovah, and for all that was laid out for the House to repair it. ^12:13Nevertheless there were not made for the House of Jehovah any bowls of silver, snuffers, basins, trumpets, any vessels of gold, or vessels of silver, of the money that was brought into the House of Jehovah; ^12:14but they gave that to the workmen; and with it they repaired the House of Jehovah. ^12:15Moreover they did not reckon with the men, into whose hand they delivered the money to be bestowed on workmen: for they dealt faithfully. ^12:16The trespass money and sin money was not brought into the House of Jehovah: it was the priests’.

^12:17Then Hazael king of Syria went up, and fought against Gath, and took it; and Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem. ^12:18And Jehoash king of Judah took all the hallowed things that Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had dedicated, and his own hallowed things, and all the gold that was found in the treasures of the House of Jehovah, and in the king’s house, and sent it to Hazael king of Syria; and he went away from Jerusalem.

Y ella se fue con su familia, y vivió en tierra de los filisteos siete años.

^8:3Y aconteció que cuando habían pasado los siete años, la mujer volvió de la tierra de los filisteos y fue a clamar al rey por su casa y por sus tierras. ^8:4Y el rey estaba hablando con Giezi, criado del varón de Dios, diciéndole, “Te ruego que me cuentes todas las maravillas que ha hecho Eliseo”.

^8:5Y sucedió que mientras él contaba al rey cómo había hecho vivir a un muerto, he aquí la mujer, a cuyo hijo había hecho vivir, que clamaba al rey por su casa y por sus tierras. Entonces dijo Giezi, “Rey señor mío, ésta es la mujer, y éste es su hijo, al cual Eliseo hizo vivir”. ^8:6Y preguntando el rey a la mujer, ella se lo contó. ^8:9Tomó pues Hazael en su mano un presente de todos los bienes de Damasco, cuarenta camellos cargados; y lo salió a recibir; y llegó, y se puso delante de él, y dijo, “Tu hijo Ben-hadad, rey de Siria, me ha enviado a ti, diciendo, ‘¿He de sanar de esta enfermedad?’” ^8:10Y Eliseo le dijo, “Ve, dile, ‘Seguramente vivirás’. Sin embargo Jehová me ha mostrado que él ciertamente ha de morir”.

^8:11Y el varón de Dios le miró fijamente, hasta avergonzarlo; y lloró el varón de Dios. ^8:12Entonces Hazael le dijo, “¿Por qué llora mi señor?”. Y él respondió, “Porque sé el mal que has de hacer a los hijos de Israel: a sus fortalezas prenderás fuego, y a sus jóvenes matarás a espada, y estrellarás a sus niños, y abrirás el vientre a sus mujeres encinta”. ^8:13Y Hazael dijo, “¿Acaso es tu siervo, un perro, para que haga tan enorme cosa?”. Y respondió Eliseo, “Jehová me ha mostrado que tú serás rey de Siria”.

^8:14Y él se fue de Eliseo, y vino a su señor, el cual le dijo, “¿Qué te ha dicho Eliseo?”. Y él respondió, “Me dijo que seguramente sanarás”.

^8:15Y sucedió que al día siguiente tomó un paño grueso y lo metió en agua, y lo puso sobre el rostro de Ben-hadad, y murió. Y reinó Hazael en su lugar.

^8:18Y anduvo en el camino de los reyes de Israel, como hizo la casa de Acab: porque una hija de Acab fue su esposa; e hizo lo malo en ojos de Jehová. ^8:19Con todo eso, Jehová no quiso cortar a Judá, por amor de David su siervo, como le había prometido darle lámpara a él y a sus hijos perpetuamente.

^8:20En su tiempo se rebeló Edom de debajo de la mano de Judá, y pusieron rey sobre sí. ^8:21Joram por tanto pasó a Seir, y todos sus carros con él; y levantándose de noche hirió a los edomitas, los cuales le habían cercado, y a los capitanes de los carros; y el pueblo huyó a sus tiendas. ^8:22No obstante, Edom se rebeló de la mano de Judá, hasta hoy. Libna también se rebeló en el mismo tiempo. ^8:23Lo demás de los hechos de Joram, y todas las cosas que hizo, ¿no está escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá? ^8:24Y durmió Joram con sus padres, y fue sepultado con sus padres en la ciudad de David; y su hijo Ocozías reinó en su lugar.

^8:25En el año doce de Joram hijo de Acab rey de Israel, comenzó a reinar Ocozías hijo de Joram rey de Judá. ^8:26Veintidós años tenía Ocozías cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó un año en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre fue Atalía hija de Omri rey de Israel. ^8:27Y anduvo en el camino de la casa de Acab, e hizo lo malo en ojos de Jehová, como la casa de Acab: porque era yerno de la casa de Acab. ^8:28Y fue a la guerra con Joram hijo de Acab a Ramot de Galaad, contra Hazael rey de Siria; y los Sirios hirieron a Joram. ^8:29Y el rey Joram se volvió a Jezreel, para curarse de las heridas que los Sirios le hicieron en Ramá, cuando peleó contra Hazael rey de Siria. Y descendió Ocozías hijo de Joram rey de Judá, a visitar a Joram hijo de Acab en Jezreel: porque estaba enfermo.

^9:1Entonces el Profeta Eliseo llamó a uno de los hijos de los Profetas, y le dijo, “Ciñe tus lomos, y toma este frasco de aceite en tu mano, y ve a Ramot de Galaad. ^9:2Y cuando llegares allá, verás allí a Jehú hijo de Josafat hijo de Nimsi; y entrando, haz que se levante de entre sus hermanos, y mételo en la recámara. ^9:3Toma luego el frasco de aceite, y derrámalo sobre su cabeza, y di, ‘Así dijo Jehová, ‘Yo te he ungido por rey sobre Israel’’. Y abriendo la puerta, echa a huir, y no esperes”. ^9:4Fue, pues, el siervo, el siervo del Profeta, a Ramot de Galaad. ^9:5Y como él entró, he aquí los príncipes del ejército que estaban sentados. En seguida abrió la puerta, y huyó. ^9:11Después salió Jehú a los siervos de su señor, y le dijeron, “¿Todo está bien? ¿Para qué entró a ti aquel loco?”. Y él les dijo, “Ustedes conocéis al hombre y sus palabras”. ^9:12Y dijeron, “Mentira; decláranoslo ahora”. Y él dijo, “Así y así me habló, diciendo, ‘Así dice Jehová, ‘Yo te he ungido por rey sobre Israel’’”. ^9:13Entonces se apresuraron y cada uno tomó su ropa, y la puso debajo de él, sobre las gradas, y tocaron trompeta, y dijeron, “¡Jehú es rey!”. ^9:14Así conjuró Jehú hijo de Josafat hijo de Nimsi, contra Joram.

Ahora Joram había guardado a Ramot de Galaad con todo Israel, por causa de Hazael rey de Siria. ^9:15Pero se había vuelto el rey Joram a Jezreel, para curarse de las heridas que los Sirios le habían hecho, peleando contra Hazael rey de Siria.

Y Jehú dijo, “Si es vuestra voluntad, ninguno escape de la ciudad, para ir a dar las nuevas en Jezreel”. ^9:16Entonces Jehú cabalgó, y se fue a Jezreel: porque Joram estaba allí enfermo.

Y Ocozías rey de Judá había descendido a visitar a Joram. ^9:17Y el atalaya que estaba en la torre de Jezreel, vio la cuadrilla de Jehú, que venía, y dijo, “Yo veo una cuadrilla”. Y Joram dijo, “Toma uno de a caballo, y envía a reconocerlos, y que les diga, ‘¿Es paz?’” ^9:18Fue, pues, el de a caballo a reconocerlos, y dijo, “El rey dice así, ‘¿Es paz?’” Y Jehú le dijo, “¿Qué tienes tú que ver con la paz? Vuélvete tras mí”. El atalaya dio luego aviso, diciendo, “El mensajero llegó hasta ellos, y no vuelve”.

^9:19Entonces envió otro de a caballo, el cual llegando a ellos, dijo, “El rey dice así, ‘¿Es paz?’” Y Jehú respondió, “¿Qué tienes tú que ver con la paz? Vuélvete tras mí”. ^9:20El atalaya volvió a decir, “También éste llegó a ellos y no vuelve; pero el marchar del que viene es como el marchar de Jehú hijo de Nimsi: porque viene impetuosamente”.

^9:21Entonces Joram dijo, “Unce”. Y uncido que fue su carro, salió Joram rey de Israel, y Ocozías rey de Judá, cada uno en su carro, y salieron a encontrar a Jehú, al cual hallaron en la heredad de Nabot de Jezreel. ^9:22Y sucedió que cuando Joram vio a Jehú, dijo, “¿Es paz, Jehú?”. Y él respondió, “¿Qué paz, con las fornicaciones de Jezabel tu madre, y sus muchas hechicerías?”. ^9:23Entonces Joram volviendo la mano huyó, y dijo a Ocozías, “¡Traición, Ocozías!”. ^9:24Pero Jehú flechó su arco, e hirió a Joram entre las espaldas, y la saeta salió por su corazón, y cayó en su carro. ^9:25Dijo luego Jehú a Bidcar su capitán, “Tómalo y échalo a un cabo de la heredad de Nabot de Jezreel. Acuérdate que cuando tú y yo íbamos juntos con la gente de Acab su padre, Jehová pronunció esta sentencia sobre él, diciendo, ^9:26‘‘Ciertamente yo vi ayer la sangre de Nabot, y la sangre de sus hijos,’ dijo Jehová; ‘y tengo que darte la paga en esta heredad,’ dijo Jehová’. Tómale, pues, ahora, y échalo en la heredad, conforme a la Palabra de Jehová”. ^9:27Y viendo esto Ocozías rey de Judá, huyó por el camino de la casa del huerto. Y lo siguió Jehú, diciendo, “Herid también a éste en el carro”. Y le hirieron a la subida de Gur, junto a Ibleam. Y él huyó a Meguido, y murió allí. ^9:28Y sus siervos le llevaron en un carro a Jerusalén, y allá le sepultaron con sus padres, en su sepulcro en la ciudad de David. ^9:29Y fue en el undécimo año de Joram hijo de Acab, que comenzó a reinar Ocozías sobre Judá.

¶El complemento   Jehú destruyó a Jezabel y setenta hijos de Acab (1 Kings 9:30 - 10:11)

^9:30Vino después Jehú a Jezreel, y como Jezabel lo oyó; adornó sus ojos con alcohol, y atavió su cabeza, y se asomó a una ventana. ^9:31Y como entraba Jehú por la puerta, ella dijo, “¿Zimri tuvo paz, quien mató a su señor?”. ^9:32Alzando él entonces su rostro hacia la ventana, dijo, “¿Quién está conmigo? ¿Quién?”. Y miraron hacia él dos o tres eunucos. ^9:33Y él les dijo, “¡Echadla abajo!”. Y ellos la echaron; y parte de su sangre fue salpicada en la pared, y en los caballos; y él la atropelló.

^9:34Entró luego, y después que comió y bebió, dijo, “Id ahora a ver aquella maldita, y sepultadla; que es hija de rey”. ^9:35Y cuando fueron para sepultarla, no hallaron de ella más que la calavera, y los pies, y las palmas de las manos; ^9:36por lo tanto volvieron, y se lo dijeron.

Y él dijo, “Ésta es la Palabra de Jehová, la cual él habló por medio de su siervo Elías Tisbita, diciendo, ‘En la heredad de Jezreel comerán los perros las carnes de Jezabel. ^9:37Y el cuerpo de Jezabel fue cual estiércol sobre la faz de la tierra en la heredad de Jezreel; de manera que nadie pueda decir, ‘Ésta es Jezabel’’.”

^10:1Y tenía Acab en Samaria setenta hijos; y escribió cartas Jehú, y las envió a Samaria a los principales de Jezreel, a los ancianos y a los ayos de los hijos de Acab, diciendo, ^10:2“Presto que lleguen estas cartas a ustedes, siendo que tenéis los hijos de vuestro señor, y que tenéis carros y gente de a caballo, la ciudad fortificada, y las armas, ^10:3mirad cuál es el mejor y el más recto de los hijos de vuestro señor, y ponedlo en el trono de su padre, y pelead por la casa de vuestro señor”. ^10:4Pero ellos tuvieron gran temor, y dijeron, “He aquí dos reyes no pudieron resistirle, ¿cómo le resistiremos nosotros?”. ^10:5Y el mayordomo, y el presidente de la ciudad, y los ancianos, y los ayos de los hijos, enviaron a decir a Jehú, “Siervos tuyos somos, y haremos todo lo que nos mandares; no elegiremos por rey a ninguno; tú harás lo que bien te pareciere”.

^10:6Él entonces les escribió la segunda vez diciendo, “Si sois míos, y queréis obedecerme, tomad las cabezas de los varones hijos de vuestro señor, y venid mañana a estas horas a mí a Jezreel”. Y los hijos del rey, setenta varones, estaban con los principales de la ciudad, que los criaban. ^10:7Y sucedió que cuando la carta llegó a ellos, tomaron a los hijos del rey, y degollaron a los setenta varones, y pusieron sus cabezas en canastas, y se las enviaron a Jezreel. ^10:8Y vino un mensajero que le dio las nuevas, diciendo, “Han traído las cabezas de los hijos del rey”. Y él le dijo, “Ponedlas en dos montones a la entrada de la puerta hasta la mañana”. ^10:9Y sucedió que venida la mañana, salió él, y estando en pie dijo a todo el pueblo, “Ustedes sois justos; he aquí yo he conspirado contra mi señor, y lo maté, ¿pero quién mató a todos éstos? ^10:10Sabed ahora que de la Palabra que Jehová habló sobre la casa de Acab, nada caerá en tierra; y que Jehová ha hecho lo que dijo por su siervo Elías”. ^10:11Mató entonces Jehú a todos los que habían quedado de la casa de Acab en Jezreel, y a todos sus príncipes, y a todos sus familiares, y a sus sacerdotes, que no le quedó ninguno.

^10:12Y se levantó de allí, y vino a Samaria; y llegando él en el camino a una casa de esquileo de pastores, ^10:13halló allí a los hermanos de Ocozías rey de Judá, y les dijo, “¿Quién sois ustedes?”. Y dijeron, “Somos hermanos de Ocozías, y hemos venido a saludar a los hijos del rey, y a los hijos de la reina”. ^10:14Entonces él dijo, “Prendedlos vivos”. Y después que los tomaron vivos, los degollaron junto al pozo de la casa de esquileo, cuarenta y dos varones, sin dejar ninguno de ellos.

^10:15Yéndose luego de allí se encontró con Jonadab hijo de Recab; que venía a su encuentro, y después de saludarle, le dijo, “¿Es recto tu corazón, como el mío es recto con el tuyo?”. Y Jonadab dijo, “Lo es”. “Pues que lo es, dame la mano”. Y él le dio su mano. Luego lo hizo subir consigo en el carro. ^10:16Y le dijo, “Ven conmigo, y verás mi celo por Jehová”. Lo pusieron, pues, en su carro.

^10:17Y luego que hubo Jehú llegado a Samaria, mató a todos los que habían quedado de Acab en Samaria, hasta extirparlos, conforme a la Palabra de Jehová, que había hablado por Elías.

^10:18Y juntó Jehú todo el pueblo, y les dijo, “Acab sirvió poco a Baal; pero Jehú lo servirá mucho. ^10:19Llamadme, pues, luego, a todos los profetas de Baal, a todos sus siervos, y a todos sus sacerdotes; que no falte uno: porque tengo un gran sacrificio para Baal; cualquiera que faltare, no vivirá”. Esto hacía Jehú con astucia, para destruir a los que honraban a Baal. ^10:20Y dijo Jehú, “Santificad un día solemne a Baal”. Y ellos convocaron. ^10:21Y envió Jehú por todo Israel, y vinieron todos los siervos de Baal, que no faltó ninguno que no viniese. Y entraron en el templo de Baal, y el templo de Baal se llenó de cabo a cabo. ^10:22Entonces dijo al que tenía el cargo de las vestiduras, “Saca vestiduras para todos lo siervos de Baal”. Y él les sacó vestiduras. ^10:23Y entró Jehú con Jonadab hijo de Recab en el templo de Baal, y dijo a los siervos de Baal, “Mirad y ved que por dicha no haya aquí entre ustedes alguno de los siervos de Jehová, sino sólo los siervos de Baal”. ^10:24Y cuando entraron para hacer sacrificios y holocaustos, Jehú puso fuera ochenta hombres, y les dijo, “Cualquiera que dejare vivo alguno de aquellos hombres que yo he puesto en vuestras manos, su vida será por la del otro”. ^10:25Y aconteció que cuando acabó de hacer el holocausto, Jehú dijo a los de su guardia y a los capitanes, “Entrad, y matadlos; que no escape ninguno”. Y los hirieron a espada; y los dejaron tendidos los de la guardia y los capitanes, y fueron hasta la ciudad del templo de Baal. ^10:26Y sacaron las estatuas de la casa de Baal, y las quemaron. ^10:27Y quebraron la estatua de Baal, y derribaron el templo de Baal, y lo tornaron en letrina, hasta hoy.

^10:28Así Jehú extinguió a Baal fuera de Israel.

¶Único  Jehú no eliminó la adoración de los becerros de oro en Dan y Bethel (2 Reyes 10:29 - 36)

^10:29Con todo eso Jehú no se apartó de los pecados de Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, que hizo pecar a Israel; es decir, de ir en pos de los becerros de oro que estaban en Betel y en Dan.

^10:30Y Jehová dijo a Jehú, “Por cuanto has hecho bien ejecutando lo recto delante de mis ojos, e hiciste a la casa de Acab conforme a todo lo que estaba en mi corazón, tus hijos se sentarán en el trono de Israel hasta la cuarta generación”.

^10:31Pero Jehú no cuidó de andar en la Ley de Jehová Dios de Israel con todo su corazón, ni se apartó de los pecados de Jeroboam, el que había hecho pecar a Israel.

^10:32En aquellos días comenzó Jehová a talar en Israel; y los hirió Hazael en todos los términos de Israel, ^10:33desde el Jordán al nacimiento del sol, toda la tierra de Galaad, de Gad, de Rubén, y de Manasés, desde Aroer que está junto al arroyo de Arnón, a Galaad y a Basán.

^10:34Lo demás de los hechos de Jehú, y todas las cosas que hizo, y toda su valentía, ¿no está escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Israel? ^10:35Y durmió Jehú con sus padres, y lo sepultaron en Samaria. Y reinó en su lugar Joacaz su hijo. ^10:36El tiempo que reinó Jehú sobre Israel en Samaria, fue veintiocho años.

^11:1Atalía madre de Ocozías, viendo que su hijo era muerto, se levantó, y destruyó toda la simiente real. ^11:2Pero tomando Josaba hija del rey Joram, hermana de Ocozías, a Joás hijo de Ocozías, lo sacó a escondidas de entre los hijos del rey, a quienes estaban dando muerte, y lo ocultó de delante de Atalía, a él y a su ama, en la cámara de las camas, y así no lo mataron. ^11:3Y estuvo con ella escondido en la Casa de Jehová seis años.

Y Atalía reinó sobre el país.

^11:4Pero al séptimo año envió Joiada, y tomó centuriones, capitanes, y gente de la guardia, y los metió consigo en la Casa de Jehová; e hizo con ellos pacto, y les hizo tomar juramento en la Casa de Jehová; y les mostró al hijo del rey. ^11:5Y les mandó, diciendo, “Esto es lo que habéis de hacer: la tercera parte de ustedes, los que entrarán el Sábado, tendrán la guardia de la casa del rey; ^11:6y la otra tercera parte estará a la puerta de Sur, y la otra tercera parte a la puerta del postigo de la guardia; así guardaréis la casa, para que no sea allanada. ^11:7Y las dos partes de todos ustedes los que salen en el Sábado, tendréis la guardia de la Casa de Jehová junto al rey. ^11:8Y estaréis alrededor del rey de todas partes, teniendo cada uno sus armas en las manos, y cualquiera que entrare dentro de estos órdenes, sea muerto. Y habéis de estar con el rey cuando saliere, y cuando entrare”. ^11:9Los centuriones pues, hicieron todo como el sacerdote Joiada les mandó; y cada uno de ellos tomó sus hombres, esto es, los que habían de entrar el Sábado y los que habían de salir el Sábado, y vinieron a Joiada el sacerdote. ^11:10Y el sacerdote dio a los centuriones las lanzas y los escudos que habían sido del rey David, que estaban en la Casa de Jehová. ^11:11Y los de la guardia se pusieron en orden, teniendo cada uno sus armas en sus manos, desde el lado derecho de la casa hasta el lado izquierdo, junto al altar y el templo, en derredor del rey. ^11:12Sacando luego Joiada al hijo del rey, le puso la corona y el testimonio, y le hicieron rey ungiéndole; y batiendo las manos dijeron, “¡Viva el rey!”.

^11:13Y oyendo Atalía el estruendo del pueblo que corría, entró al pueblo en el Templo de Jehová. ^11:14Y cuando miró, he aquí que el rey estaba junto a la columna, conforme era la costumbre, y los príncipes y los trompeteros junto al rey; y todo el pueblo del país se regocijaba, y tocaban las trompetas. Entonces Atalía, rasgando sus vestidos, gritó, “¡Traición, traición!”. ^11:15Pero el sacerdote Joiada mandó a los centuriones que gobernaban el ejército, y les dijo, “Sacadla fuera del recinto del templo, y al que la siguiere, matadle a espada”. (Porque el sacerdote dijo que no la matasen en el Templo de Jehová.) ^11:16Entonces le echaron mano, cuando iba en el camino por donde entran los de a caballo a la casa del rey, allí la mataron.

^11:17Entonces Joiada hizo alianza entre Jehová y el rey y el pueblo, que serían pueblo de Jehová; y asimismo entre el rey y el pueblo. ^11:18Y todo el pueblo de la tierra entró en el templo de Baal, y lo derribaron; asimismo despedazaron enteramente sus altares y sus imágenes, y mataron a Matán sacerdote de Baal delante de los altares. Y el sacerdote puso guarnición sobre la Casa de Jehová. ^11:19Después tomó los centuriones, los capitanes, la guardia y a todo el pueblo de la tierra, e hicieron descender al rey de la Casa de Jehová, y vinieron por el camino de la puerta de la guardia a la casa del rey; y se sentó el rey sobre el trono de los reyes. ^11:20Y todo el pueblo de la tierra hizo alegrías, y la ciudad estuvo en reposo, habiendo sido Atalía muerta a espada junto a la casa del rey.

¶El complemento   Joás rey de Judá reparó la casa de Jehová (2 Reyes 11:21 - 12:21)

^11:21Siete años tenía Joás cuando comenzó a reinar. ^12:1En el séptimo año de Jehú comenzó a reinar Joás, y reinó cuarenta años en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre fue Sibia, de Beerseba.

^12:2Y Joás hizo lo recto en ojos de Jehová todo el tiempo que le instruyó el sacerdote Joiada. ^12:3Con todo eso los lugares altos no se quitaron; pues el pueblo aún sacrificaba y quemaba incienso en los lugares altos.

^12:4Y Joás dijo a los sacerdotes, “Todo el dinero de las santificaciones que se suele traer a la Casa de Jehová, el dinero de los que pasan en cuenta, el dinero por las personas, cada cual según su tasa, y todo el dinero que cada uno de su propia voluntad mete en la Casa de Jehová, ^12:5recíbanlo los sacerdotes, cada uno de sus familiares, y reparen las grietas del Templo dondequiera que éstas se hallen”. ^12:6Pero en el año veintitrés del rey Joás, los sacerdotes aún no habían reparado las grietas del Templo. ^12:7Llamando entonces el rey Joás al sacerdote Joiada y a los demás sacerdotes, les dijo, “¿Por qué no reparáis las grietas del Templo? Ahora, pues, no toméis más dinero de vuestros familiares, sino dadlo para reparar las grietas del Templo”. ^12:8Y los sacerdotes consintieron en no tomar más dinero del pueblo, ni tener cargo de reparar las grietas del Templo. ^12:9Pero el sacerdote Joiada tomó un arca, y le hizo en la tapa un agujero, y la puso junto al altar, a la mano derecha conforme se entra en el Templo de Jehová; y los sacerdotes que guardaban la puerta, ponían allí todo el dinero que se traía a la Casa de Jehová. ^12:10Y cuando veían que había mucho dinero en el arca, venía el escriba del rey y el sumo sacerdote, y contaban el dinero que hallaban en el Templo de Jehová, y lo guardaban. ^12:11Y daban el dinero suficiente en mano de los que hacían la obra, y de los que tenían el cargo de la Casa de Jehová; y ellos lo gastaban en pagar a los carpinteros y maestros que reparaban la Casa de Jehová, ^12:12y a los albañiles y canteros; y en comprar la madera y piedra de cantería para reparar las aberturas de la Casa de Jehová; y en todo lo que se gastaba en la Casa para repararla. ^12:13Pero de aquel dinero que se traía a la Casa de Jehová, no se hacían tazas de plata, ni despabiladeras, ni jofainas, ni trompetas; ni ningún otro vaso de oro ni de plata se hacía para el Templo de Jehová: ^12:14porque lo daban a los que hacían la obra, y con él reparaban la Casa de Jehová. ^12:15Y no se pedían cuentas a los hombres en cuyas manos el dinero era entregado, para que ellos lo diesen a los que hacían la obra: porque ellos procedían con fidelidad. ^12:16El dinero por el delito, y el dinero por los pecados, no se metía en la Casa de Jehová: porque era de los sacerdotes.

^12:17Entonces subió Hazael rey de Siria, y peleó contra Gat, y la tomó; y puso Hazael su rostro para subir contra Jerusalén; ^12:18por lo que tomó Joás rey de Judá todas las ofrendas que había dedicado Josafat, y Joram y Ocozías sus padres, reyes de Judá, y las que él había dedicado, y todo el oro que se halló en los tesoros de la Casa de Jehová, y en la casa del rey, y lo envió a Hazael rey de Siria; y él se retiró de Jerusalén.

^12:19Lo demás de los hechos de Joás, y todas las cosas que hizo, ¿no está escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá? ^12:20Y se levantaron sus siervos, y conspiraron, y mataron a Joás en la casa de Milo, descendiendo él a Sila. ^12:21Pues Josacar hijo de Simeat, y Jozabad hijo de Somer, sus siervos, le hirieron, y murió. Y le sepultaron con sus padres en la ciudad de David, y reinó en su lugar Amasías su hijo.
