Kings, Chapter 2.5: Jehovah sent Babylon to judge the Kingdom of Judah (2 Kings 18:1 - 36)

Also his mother’s name was Abi, the daughter of Zachariah. ^18:3And he did right in the sight of Jehovah, according to all that David his father did. ^18:4He removed the high places, and broke the images, and cut down the images of Asherah. And he broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made: for until those days the children of Israel burned incense to it; and he called it Nehushtan. ^18:5He trusted in Jehovah God of Israel, so that after him were none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him: ^18:6for he was faithful to Jehovah, and departed not from following him, but kept his Commandments, which Jehovah commanded Moses. ^18:7And Jehovah was with him; and he prospered wheresoever he went forth; and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and did not serve him. ^18:8He smote the Philistines, even unto Gaza, and its borders, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city.

^18:9And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria, and besieged it. ^18:10And at the end of three years they took it: in the sixth year of Hezekiah, that is the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken. ^18:11And the king of Assyria carried Israel away to Assyria, and put them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes, ^18:12because they did not obey the voice of Jehovah their God, but transgressed his Covenant, and all that Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded; and they would not hear them, nor do them.

^18:13Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah, and took them. ^18:14And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, “I have offended; return from me; that which you put on me I will bear.” And the king of Assyria appointed to Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold. ^18:15And Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the House of Jehovah, and in the treasures of the king’s house. ^18:16At that time Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors of the Temple of Jehovah, and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.

^18:17And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rabsaris and Rab-shakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great army against Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they had come up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is in the highway of the fuller’s field. ^18:18And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder. ^18:19And Rab-shakeh said to them, “Speak now to Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: ‘What confidence is this in which you trust? ^18:20You say (but they are but vain words), ‘I have counsel and strength for the war.’ Now on whom do you trust, that you rebel against me? ^18:21Now, behold, you rely upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt; on which if a man leans, it will go into his hand, and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust on him. ^18:22But if you say to me, ‘We trust in Jehovah our God’: is that not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?’ ^18:23Now therefore, please, give pledges to my lord the king of Assyria, and I will deliver you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders upon them. ^18:24How then will you turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put your trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? ^18:25Have I now come up without Jehovah against this place to destroy it? Jehovah said to me, ‘Go up against this land, and destroy it.’’”

^18:26Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, Shebna, and Joah, said to Rab-shakeh, “Please, speak to your servants in the Aramaic language: for we understand it; and do not talk with us in the Jews’ language in the ears of the people that are on the wall.” ^18:27But Rab-shakeh said to them, “Has my master sent me to your master, and to you, to speak these words? Has he not sent me to the men who sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own urine with you?” ^18:28Then Rab-shakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and spoke, saying, “Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria! ^18:29Thus says the king: ‘Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand; ^18:30neither let Hezekiah make you trust in Jehovah, saying, ‘Jehovah will certainly deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.’’ ^18:31Do not listen to Hezekiah: for thus says the king of Assyria: ‘Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me; and then every man shall eat of his own vine, and everyone of his fig tree, and everyone drink the water of his cistern, ^18:32until I come and take you away to a land like your own land: a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive oil and of honey, so that you may live, and not die. And do not listen to Hezekiah, when he persuades you, saying, ‘Jehovah will deliver us.’ ^18:33Have any of the gods of the nations delivered at all his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? ^18:34Where are the gods of Hamath and of Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? ^18:35Who are they among all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their country out of my hand, that Jehovah should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?’” ^18:36But the people held their peace, and did not answer him a word: for the king’s command was, saying, “Answer him not.”

^18:37Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah (which was over the household), Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn; and they told him the words of Rab-shakeh. ^19:1And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he tore his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the House of Jehovah. ^19:2And he sent Eliakim, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz. ^19:3And they said to him, “Thus says Hezekiah: ‘This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and blasphemy: for the children have come to the birth, and there is not strength to give birth. ^19:4It may be Jehovah your God will hear all the words of Rab-shakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to reproach the living God; and will reprove the words which Jehovah your God has heard; therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that are left.’” ^19:5So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah. ^19:6And Isaiah said to them, “Thus shall you say to your master, ‘Thus says Jehovah: ‘Do not be afraid of the words which you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. ^19:7Behold, I will send a spirit upon him; and he shall hear a rumor, and shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.’’”

^19:8So Rab-shakeh returned; and he found the king of Assyria making war against Libnah: for he had heard that he had departed from Lachish. ^19:9And when he heard it was said of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, “Behold, he has come out to fight against you”, he sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying, ^19:10“Thus shall you speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, ‘Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, ‘Jerusalem shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.’ ^19:11Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly; and shall you be delivered? ^19:12Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed: such as Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Thelasar? ^19:13Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivah?’” ^19:14And Hezekiah received the letter of the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up into the House of Jehovah, and spread it before Jehovah. ^19:15And Hezekiah prayed to Jehovah. And he said, “O Jehovah God of Israel, which dwells between the cherubims: you are the true God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made Heaven and earth. ^19:16Jehovah, bow down your ear, and hear; open, Jehovah, your eyes, and see, and hear the words of Sennacherib, which has sent him to reproach the living God. ^19:17It is true, Jehovah, the kings of Assyria have destroyed the nations and their lands, ^19:18and have cast their gods into the fire. For they were not real gods, but only the work of men’s hands: wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them. ^19:19Now therefore, O Jehovah our God, please, save us out of his hand; that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you are Jehovah God, even you only.”

^19:20Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, “Thus says Jehovah God of Israel: ‘That which you have prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard. ^19:21This is the Word that Jehovah has spoken concerning him: ‘The virgin the daughter of Zion has despised you, and laughed you to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you. ^19:22Whom have you reproached and blasphemed? And against whom have you exalted your voice, and lifted up your eyes on high? Even against the Holy One of Israel. ^19:23By your messengers you have reproached the Lord, and have said, ‘With the multitude of my chariots I have come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon, and will cut down its tall cedar trees, and its choice fir trees; and I will enter into the lodgings of his borders, and into the forest of his Carmel. ^19:24I have dug and drunk strange water, and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of besieged places.’ ^19:25Have you not heard long ago how I have done it, and of ancient times that I have formed it? Now I have brought it to pass, that you should be to lay waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps. ^19:26Therefore their inhabitants were weak; they were dismayed and ashamed; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as grain, wind-blown before it has grown up. ^19:27But I know your abode, and your going out, and your coming in, and your rage against me. ^19:28Because your rage against me and your tumult has come up into my ears; therefore I will put my hook in your nose, and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way that you came.’

^19:29“And this shall be a sign to you: this year you shall eat such things as grow of themselves; and in the second year that which springs of the same; and in the third year sow and reap, and plant vineyards and eat its fruit. ^19:30And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall yet again take root downward, and bear fruit upward. ^19:31For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion; the zeal of Jehovah of hosts shall do this.’ ^19:32Therefore thus says Jehovah concerning the king of Assyria: ‘He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor build a siege mound against it. ^19:33By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city,’ says Jehovah. ^19:34‘For I will defend this city, to save it, for my own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.’”

^19:35And it came to pass that night, that the angel of Jehovah went out; and he smote in the camp of the Assyrians one hundred and eighty-five thousand soldiers. And when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses. ^19:36So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed; and he went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh. ^19:37And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Armenia. And Esar-haddon his son reigned in his place.

And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him; and said to him, “Thus says Jehovah: ‘Set your house in order: for you shall die; and not live.’” ^20:2Then he turned his face to the wall; and he prayed to Jehovah, saying, ^20:3“Please, O Jehovah, remember now how I have walked before you in truth and with a loyal heart; and I have done that which is good in your sight.” And Hezekiah wept grievously.

^20:4And it came to pass, before Isaiah went out into the middle court, that the Word of Jehovah came to him, saying, ^20:5“Return, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, ‘Thus says Jehovah, the God of David your father: ‘I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Behold, I will heal you; on the third day you shall go up to the House of Jehovah. ^20:6And I will add to your days fifteen years. And I will deliver you and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for my own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.’’”

^20:7And Isaiah said, “Take a lump of figs.” And they took and laid it on the boil; and he recovered. ^20:8And Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “What shall be the sign that Jehovah will heal me, and that I shall go up into the House of Jehovah the third day?” ^20:9And Isaiah said, “This sign shall you have of Jehovah, that Jehovah will do the thing that he has spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten degrees, or go back ten degrees?” ^20:10And Hezekiah answered, “It is a light thing for the shadow to go down ten degrees; no, but let the shadow return backward ten degrees.” ^20:11And Isaiah the prophet cried to Jehovah; and he brought the shadow ten degrees backward, by which it had gone down in the dial of Ahaz.

^20:12At that time Berodach-baladan, the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present to Hezekiah: for he had heard that Hezekiah had been sick. ^20:13And Hezekiah gave heed to them, and showed them all the house of his precious things: the silver, the gold, the spices, the precious ointment, all the house of his armor, and all that was found in his treasures. There was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah did not show them. ^20:14Then Isaiah the prophet came to king Hezekiah, and said to him, “What did these men say? And where did they come from to you?” And Hezekiah said, “They have come from a far country, even from Babylon.” ^20:15And he said, “What have they seen in your house?” And Hezekiah answered, “They have seen everything that is in my house; there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shown them.” ^20:16And Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the Word of Jehovah: ^20:17‘‘Behold, the days are coming, that all that is in your house, and that which your fathers have laid up in store until this day, shall be carried into Babylon; nothing shall be left,’ says Jehovah. ^20:18‘And of your sons that shall issue from you, which you shall beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.’’” ^20:19Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “Good is the Word of Jehovah which you have spoken.” And he said, “Is it not good, if peace and truth are in my days?”

^20:20And the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and all his might; and how he made a pool, and a tunnel, and brought water into the city, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? ^20:21And Hezekiah slept with his fathers; and Manasseh his son reigned in his place.

^21:1Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Hephzi-bah. ^21:2And he did evil in the sight of Jehovah, after the abominations of the heathen, whom Jehovah cast out before the children of Israel: ^21:3for he rebuilt the high places which Hezekiah his father had destroyed; and he raised up altars for Baal, and made an image of Asherah, as Ahab king of Israel did; and worshipped all the constellations of the zodiac, and served them. ^21:4And he built altars in the House of Jehovah, of which Jehovah said, “In Jerusalem will I put my Name.” ^21:5And he built altars for all the constellations of the zodiac in the two courts of the House of Jehovah. ^21:6And he made his son to pass through the fire, and practiced astrology, and used witchcraft, and dealt with spiritists and witches; he did much wickedness in the sight of Jehovah, to provoke him to anger. ^21:7And he set a carved image of Asherah that he had made in the House of God; of which Jehovah said to David, and to Solomon his son, “In this House, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all tribes of Israel, will I put my Name forever; ^21:8neither will I make the feet of Israel move anymore out of the land which I gave their fathers; but only if they will observe to do according to all that I have commanded them, and according to all the Law that my servant Moses commanded them.” ^21:9But they did not listen; and Manasseh seduced them to do more evil than did the nations whom Jehovah destroyed before the children of Israel. ^21:10And Jehovah spoke by his servants the prophets, saying, ^21:11“Because Manasseh king of Judah has done these abominations, and has done wickedly above all that the Amorites did, which were before him, and has made Judah also to sin with his idols; ^21:12therefore thus says Jehovah God of Israel: ‘Behold, I am bringing such evil upon Jerusalem and Judah, that whosoever hears of it, both his ears shall tingle. ^21:13And I will stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria, and the plummet of the house of Ahab; and I will wipe Jerusalem as one wipes a dish, wiping it, and turning it upside down. ^21:14And I will forsake the remnant of my inheritance, and deliver them into the hand of their enemies; and they shall become a prize and a plunder to all their enemies, ^21:15because they have done evil in my sight, and have provoked me to anger, since the day their fathers came forth out of Egypt, even until this day.’” ^21:16Moreover Manasseh shed innocent blood very much, until he had filled Jerusalem from one end to another, beside his sin by which he made Judah to sin, in doing evil in the sight of Jehovah.

^21:17Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh, and all that he did, and his sin that he sinned, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? ^21:18And Manasseh slept with his fathers, and was buried in the garden of his own house, in the garden of Uzza; and Amon his son reigned in his place.

^21:19Amon was twenty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned two years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Meshullemeth, the daughter of Haruz of Jotbah. ^21:20And he did evil in the sight of Jehovah, as his father Manasseh did. ^21:21And he walked in all the way that his father walked in, and served the idols that his father served, and worshipped them. ^21:22And he forsook Jehovah God of his fathers; and did not walk in the way of Jehovah.

^21:23And the servants of Amon conspired against him, and slew the king in his own house. ^21:24And the people of the land executed all them that had conspired against king Amon; and the people of the land made Josiah his son king in his place.

^21:25Now the rest of the acts of Amon which he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? ^21:26And he was buried in his grave in the garden of Uzza; and Josiah his son reigned in his place.

^22:1Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jedidah, the daughter of Adaiah of Boscath. ^22:2And he did right in the sight of Jehovah, and walked in all the way of David his father, and did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.

^22:3And it came to pass in the eighteenth year of king Josiah, that the king sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, the son of Meshullam, the scribe, to the House of Jehovah, saying, ^22:4“Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he may count the silver which is brought into the House of Jehovah, which the keepers of the door have gathered of the people; ^22:5and let them deliver it into the hand of the doers of the work, that have the oversight of the House of Jehovah; and let them give it to the doers of the work which is in the House of Jehovah, to repair the breaches of the House: ^22:6to carpenters, builders, and masons; and to buy timber and cut stone to repair the House.” ^22:7Nevertheless there was no accounting made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand, because they dealt faithfully.

^22:8And Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, “I have found the Book of the Law in the House of Jehovah.” And Hilkiah gave the Book to Shaphan, and he read it. ^22:9And Shaphan the scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and said, “Your servants have gathered the money that was found in the House, and have delivered it into the hand of them that do the work, that have the oversight of the House of Jehovah.” ^22:10And Shaphan the scribe showed the king, saying, “Hilkiah the priest has delivered me a Book.” And Shaphan read it before the king.

^22:11And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the Book of the Law, that he tore his clothes. ^22:12And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Achbor the son of Michaiah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asahiah a servant of the king’s, saying, ^22:13“Go, inquire of Jehovah for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this Book that is found: for great is the wrath of Jehovah that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not given heed to the words of this Book, to do according to all that which is written concerning us.” ^22:14So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asahiah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college); and they communed with her. ^22:15And she said to them, “Thus says Jehovah God of Israel: ‘Tell the man that sent you to me: ^22:16‘Thus says Jehovah: ‘Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon its inhabitants, even all the words of the Book which the king of Judah has read, ^22:17because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and shall not be quenched.’’

^22:18“But to the king of Judah which sent you to inquire of Jehovah, thus shall you say to him, ‘Thus says Jehovah God of Israel: ‘As touching the words which you have heard: ^22:19because your heart was tender, and you have humbled yourself from Jehovah, when you heard what I spoke against this place, and against its inhabitants, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and have torn your clothes, and wept before me: I also have heard you,’ says Jehovah. ^22:20‘Therefore, behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered into your grave in peace; and your eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place.’’”

And they brought the king word again. ^23:1And the king sent, and they gathered to him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem. ^23:2And the king went up into the House of Jehovah, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great; and he read in their ears all the words of the Book of the Covenant which was found in the House of Jehovah. ^23:3And the king stood by a pillar, and made a covenant from Jehovah: to walk after Jehovah, and to keep his Commandments and his Testimonies and his Statutes with all their heart and all their soul: to perform the words of this Covenant that were written in this Book. And all the people stood to the covenant.

^23:4And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the keepers of the door, to bring forth out of the Temple of Jehovah all the vessels that were made for Baal, and for the image of Asherah, and for all the constellations of the zodiac; and he burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them to Bethel. ^23:5And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; he also put down them that burned incense to Baal, to the sun, to the moon, to the planets, and to all the constellations of the zodiac. ^23:6And he brought out the image of Asherah from the House of Jehovah, outside Jerusalem, to the brook Kidron, and burned it at the brook Kidron, and stamped it small to powder, and cast its powder upon the graves of the children of the people. ^23:7And he broke down the houses of the sodomites, that were by the House of Jehovah, where the women wove hangings for the image of Asherah. ^23:8And he brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah, and defiled the high places where the priests had burned incense, from Geba to Beer-sheba, and broke down the high places of the gates that were in the entering in of the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, which were on a man’s left hand at the gate of the city. ^23:9(Nevertheless the priests of the high places did not come up to the altar of Jehovah in Jerusalem, but they ate of the unleavened bread among their brethren.) ^23:10And he defiled Tophet, which is in the valley of the children of Hinnom, that no man might make his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molech. ^23:11And he took away the horses that the kings of Judah had given to the sun, at the entering in of the House of Jehovah, by the chamber of Nathan-melech the chamberlain, which was in the suburbs, and burned the chariots of the sun with fire. ^23:12And the altars that were on the top of the upper chamber of Ahaz, which the kings of Judah had made, and the altars which Manasseh had made in the two courts of the House of Jehovah, did the king beat down, and broke them down from there, and cast the dust of them into the brook Kidron. ^23:13And the high places that were before Jerusalem, which were on the right hand of the mount of corruption, which Solomon the king of Israel had built for Ashtoreth the abomination of the Zidonians, and for Chemosh the abomination of the Moabites, and for Milcom the abomination of the children of Ammon, did the king defile. ^23:14And he broke in pieces the statues, and cut down the images of Asherah, and filled their places with the bones of men. ^23:15Moreover the altar that was at Bethel, and the high place which Jeroboam the son of Nebat (who made Israel to sin) had made, both that altar and the high place he broke down, and burned the high place, and stamped it small to powder, and burned the image of Asherah. ^23:16And as Josiah turned himself, he saw the graves that were there in the mountain; and he sent, and took the bones out of the graves, and burned them upon the altar, and polluted it, according to the Word of Jehovah which the man of God proclaimed, who proclaimed these words. ^23:17Then he said, “What gravestone is that, that I see?” And the men of the city told him, “It is the grave of the man of God, which came from Judah, and proclaimed these things that you have done against the altar of Bethel.” ^23:18And he said, “Let him alone. Let no man move his bones.” So they let his bones alone, with the bones of the prophet that came out of Samaria. ^23:19And all the houses also of the high places that were in the cities of Samaria, which the kings of Israel had made to provoke Jehovah to anger, Josiah took away, and did to them according to all the acts that he had done in Bethel. ^23:20And he executed all the priests of the high places that were there upon the altars, and burned men’s bones upon them, and returned to Jerusalem.

^23:21And the king commanded all the people, saying, “Keep the Passover to Jehovah your God, as it is written in the Book of this Covenant.” ^23:22Surely such a Passover was not held from the days of the judges that judged Israel, nor in all the days of the kings of Israel, nor of the kings of Judah; ^23:23but in the eighteenth year of king Josiah, in which this Passover was held to Jehovah in Jerusalem. ^23:24Moreover the spiritists, and the witches, and the images, and the idols, and all the abominations that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, did Josiah put away, that he might perform the words of the Law which were written in the Book that Hilkiah the priest found in the House of Jehovah. ^23:25And like him was there no king before him, that turned to Jehovah with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the Law of Moses; neither after him did there arise any like him.

^23:26Notwithstanding Jehovah did not turn from the fierceness of his great wrath, wherewith his anger was kindled against Judah, because of all the provocations that Manasseh had provoked him with. ^23:27And Jehovah said, “I will also remove Judah out of my sight, as I have removed Israel, and will cast off this city Jerusalem which I have chosen, and the House of which I said, ‘My Name shall be there.’”

^23:28Now the rest of the acts of Josiah, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? ^23:29In his days Pharaoh-nechoh king of Egypt went up against the king of Assyria to the Euphrates river; and king Josiah went against him. And he slew him at Megiddo, when he had seen him. ^23:30And his servants carried him in a chariot dead from Megiddo, and brought him to Jerusalem, and buried him in his own grave. And the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, and anointed him, and made him king in his father’s place.

¶Unique   Judah was ruled first by the king of Egypt, and then by the king of Babylon (2 Kings 23:31 - 24:17)

^23:31Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he began to reign; and he reigned three months in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Hamutal, the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah. ^23:32And he did evil in the sight of Jehovah, according to all that his fathers had done.

^23:33And Pharaoh-nechoh put him in bonds at Riblah in the land of Hamath, that he might not reign in Jerusalem; and he put the land to a tribute of one hundred talents of silver, and a talent of gold. ^23:34And Pharaoh-nechoh made Eliakim the son of Josiah king in the place of Josiah his father; and he changed his name to Jehoiakim. And he took Jehoahaz away; and he came to Egypt, and died there. ^23:35And Jehoiakim gave the silver and the gold to Pharaoh. But he taxed the land to give the money according to the command of Pharaoh. He taxed the silver and the gold of the people of the land, of everyone according to his taxation, to give it to Pharaoh-nechoh.

^23:36Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Zebudah, the daughter of Pedaiah of Rumah. ^23:37And he did evil in the sight of Jehovah, according to all that his fathers had done. ^24:1In his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up, and Jehoiakim became his servant three years.

Then he turned and rebelled against him. ^24:2And Jehovah sent against him bands of the Chaldees, and bands of the Syrians, and bands of the Moabites, and bands of the children of Ammon; and he sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the Word of Jehovah, which he spoke by his servants the prophets. ^24:3Surely at the Commandment of Jehovah this came upon Judah, to remove them out of his sight, for the sins of Manasseh, according to all that he did; ^24:4and also for the innocent blood that he shed: for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood, which Jehovah would not pardon. ^24:5Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? ^24:6So Jehoiakim slept with his fathers; and Jehoiachin his son reigned in his place. ^24:7And the king of Egypt did not come again anymore out of his land: for the king of Babylon had taken from the river of Egypt to the Euphrates river all that belonged to the king of Egypt.

^24:8Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. And his mother’s name was Nehushta, the daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem. ^24:9And he did evil in the sight of Jehovah, according to all that his father had done. ^24:10At that time the servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against Jerusalem, and the city was besieged. ^24:11And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came against the city, and his servants besieged it. ^24:12And Jehoiachin the king of Judah went out to the king of Babylon: he, his mother, his servants, his princes, and his officers; and the king of Babylon took him in the eighth year of his reign. ^24:13And he carried out from there all the treasures of the House of Jehovah, and the treasures of the king’s house, and cut in pieces all the vessels of gold which Solomon king of Israel had made in the Temple of Jehovah, as Jehovah had said. ^24:14And he carried away all Jerusalem, and all the princes, and all the mighty men of valor (even ten thousand captives), and all the craftsmen and smiths: none remained, except the poorest sort of the people of the land. ^24:15And he carried Jehoiachin away to Babylon; and the king’s mother, the king’s wives, his officers, and the mighty of the land: those he also carried into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon. ^24:16And all the men of might, even seven thousand, and craftsmen and smiths a thousand, all that were strong and fit for war, even them the king of Babylon brought captive to Babylon. ^24:17And the king of Babylon made Mattaniah his father’s brother king in his place, and changed his name to Zedekiah.

^25:1And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon (he and all his army) came against Jerusalem, and pitched against it. And they built forts against it round about. ^25:2And the city was besieged until the eleventh year of king Zedekiah.

^25:3And on the ninth day of the fourth month the famine prevailed in the city; and there was no bread for the people of the land. ^25:4And the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled by night by the way of the gate between two walls, which is by the king’s garden (now the Chaldees were against the city round about); and the king went the way toward the plain. ^25:5And the army of the Chaldees pursued after the king, and overtook him in the plains of Jericho; and all his army was scattered from him.

^25:6So they took the king, and brought him up to the king of Babylon to Riblah; and they gave judgment upon him. ^25:7And they executed the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes; and they put out the eyes of Zedekiah, and bound him with fetters of bronze, and carried him to Babylon.

¶Complement   The remnant of Judah in the land fled to Egypt after Gedaliah was assassinated by Ishmael (2 Kings 25:8 - 30)

^25:8And in the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month, which is the nineteenth year of king Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, Nebuzar-adan, captain of the guard, a servant of the king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem; ^25:9and he burned the House of Jehovah, and the king’s house, and all the houses of Jerusalem; and every great man’s house did he burn with fire. ^25:10And all the army of the Chaldees, that were with the captain of the guard, broke down the walls of Jerusalem round about.

^25:11Now the rest of the people that were left in the city, and the fugitives that fell away to the king of Babylon, with the remnant of the multitude, Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carried them away. ^25:12But the captain of the guard left some of the poor of the land to be vine dressers and farmers. ^25:13And the pillars of bronze that were in the House of Jehovah, and the bases, and the bronze sea that was in the House of Jehovah, the Chaldees broke them in pieces, and carried the bronze of them to Babylon. ^25:14And the pots, and the shovels, and the snuffers, and the spoons, and all the vessels of bronze which they ministered with, they took away. ^25:15And the fire pans, the bowls, and such things as were of gold, in gold, and of silver, in silver, the captain of the guard took away. ^25:16The two pillars, one sea, and the bases which Solomon had made for the House of Jehovah: the weight of the bronze of all these vessels was unknown. ^25:17The height of the one pillar was eighteen cubits, and the capital upon it was bronze; and the height of the capital three cubits; and the wreathen work, and pomegranates upon the capital round about: all of bronze; and like these was the second pillar with wreathen work. ^25:18And the captain of the guard took Seraiah the chief priest, and Zephaniah the second priest, and the three keepers of the door; ^25:19and out of the city he took an officer that was set over the men of war, and five men of them that were in the king’s presence, which were found in the city, and the principal scribe of the army, which numbered the people of the land, and sixty men of the people of the land that were found in the city; ^25:20and Nebuzar-adan captain of the guard took these, and brought them to the king of Babylon to Riblah; ^25:21and the king of Babylon smote them, and executed them at Riblah in the land of Hamath. So Judah was carried away out of their land.

^25:22And as for the people that remained in the land of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had left, even over them he made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, ruler. ^25:23And when all the captains of the armies, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah governor, there came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophasite, and Jaazaniah the son of a Maachasite, they and their men. ^25:24And Gedaliah swore to them, and to their men, and said to them, “Fear not to be the servants of the Chaldees. Dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon; and it shall be well with you.”

^25:25But it came to pass in the seventh month, that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama (of the royal seed) came, and ten men with him; and they smote Gedaliah, that he died, and the Jews and the Chaldees that were with him at Mizpah. ^25:26And all the people, both small and great, and the captains of the armies, arose; and they came to Egypt: for they were afraid of the Chaldees.

^25:27And it came to pass in the thirty-seventh year of the captivity of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, that Evil-merodach king of Babylon in the year that he began to reign, lifted up the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah out of prison. ^25:28And he spoke kindly to him; and set his throne above the throne of the kings that were with him in Babylon; ^25:29and changed his prison garments. And he ate bread continually before him all the days of his life; ^25:30and his provision was a regular ration given him by the king, a daily rate for every day, all the days of his life.

^18:37Entonces Eliaquim hijo de Hilcías, que era mayordomo, y Sebna el escriba, y Joah hijo de Asaf, el cronista, vinieron a Ezequías, rasgadas sus vestiduras, y le declararon las palabras del Rabsaces. ^19:1Y aconteció que cuando el rey Ezequías lo oyó, rasgó sus vestiduras, y se cubrió de cilicio, y entró en la Casa de Jehová. ^19:2Y envió a Eliaquim el mayordomo, y a Sebna escriba, y a los ancianos de los sacerdotes, vestidos de cilicio, al Profeta Isaías, hijo de Amoz. ^19:3Y le dijeron, “Así ha dicho Ezequías, ‘Este día es día de angustia, de reprensión y de blasfemia: porque los hijos están a punto de nacer, y la que da a luz no tiene fuerzas. ^19:4Quizá oirá Jehová tu Dios todas las palabras del Rabsaces, al cual el rey de los aSirios su señor ha enviado para injuriar al Dios vivo, y para vituperar con palabras, las cuales Jehová tu Dios ha oído; por tanto, eleva oración por el remanente que aún queda”. ^19:5Vinieron, pues, los siervos del rey Ezequías a Isaías. ^19:6E Isaías les respondió, “Así diréis a vuestro señor, ‘Así dice Jehová; ‘No temas por las palabras que has oído, con las cuales me han blasfemado los siervos del rey de Asiria. ^19:7He aquí pondré yo en él un espíritu, y oirá rumor, y se volverá a su tierra; y yo haré que en su tierra caiga a espada’’”.

^19:8Y regresando el Rabsaces, halló al rey de Asiria combatiendo a Libna: porque había oído que se había ido de Laquis. ^19:9Y oyó decir de Tirhaca rey de Etiopía, “He aquí es salido para hacerte guerra”. Entonces volvió él, y envió embajadores a Ezequías, diciendo, ^19:10“Así diréis a Ezequías rey de Judá, ‘No te engañe tu Dios en quien tú confías, para decir, ‘Jerusalén no será entregada en mano del rey de Asiria’. ^19:11He aquí tú has oído lo que han hecho los reyes de Asiria a todas las tierras, destruyéndolas; ¿y serás tú librado? ^19:12¿Acaso las libraron los dioses de las naciones que mis padres destruyeron, es decir, Gozán, y Harán, y Rezef, y los hijos de Edén que estaban en Telasar? ^19:13¿Dónde está el rey de Hamat, el rey de Arfad, el rey de la ciudad de Sefarvaim, de Hena, y de Iva?’” ^19:14Y tomó Ezequías la carta de mano de los embajadores; y después que la hubo leído, subió a la Casa de Jehová, y la extendió Ezequías delante de Jehová. ^19:15Y oró Ezequías delante de Jehová, diciendo, “Jehová Dios de Israel, que habitas entre los querubines, solo tú eres Dios de todos los reinos de la tierra; tú hiciste el Cielo y la tierra. ^19:16Inclina, oh Jehová, tu oído, y oye; abre, oh Jehová, tus ojos, y mira; y oye las palabras de Senaquerib, que ha enviado a blasfemar al Dios viviente. ^19:17Es verdad, oh Jehová, que los reyes de Asiria han destruido las naciones y sus tierras; ^19:18y que pusieron en el fuego a sus dioses, por cuanto ellos no eran dioses, sino obra de manos de hombres, madera o piedra, y así los destruyeron. ^19:19Ahora pues, oh Jehová Dios nuestro, sálvanos, te suplico, de su mano, para que sepan todos los reinos de la tierra que sólo tú, Jehová, eres Dios verdadero”.

^19:20Entonces Isaías hijo de Amoz envió a decir a Ezequías, “Así dice Jehová, Dios de Israel: ‘Lo que me rogaste acerca de Senaquerib rey de Asiria, he oído. ^19:21Ésta es la Palabra que Jehová ha hablado contra él, ‘Te ha menospreciado, te ha escarnecido la virgen hija de Sión; ha movido su cabeza detrás de ti la hija de Jerusalén. ^19:22¿A quién has injuriado y a quién has blasfemado? ¿Y contra quién has alzado tu voz, y has alzado en alto tus ojos? Contra el Santo de Israel. ^19:23Por mano de tus mensajeros has proferido injuria contra el Señor, y has dicho, ‘Con la multitud de mis carros he subido a las cumbres de los montes, a las cuestas del Líbano; y cortaré sus altos cedros, sus abetos más escogidos; y me alojaré en la morada más lejana, en el monte Carmelo. ^19:24Yo he cavado y bebido las aguas extrañas, he secado con las plantas de mis pies todos los ríos de Egipto’. ^19:25¿Nunca has oído que hace mucho tiempo yo lo hice, y que desde los días de la antigüedad lo dispuse? Y ahora lo he hecho venir, y tú serás para hacer desolaciones, para reducir las ciudades fortificadas en montones de ruinas. ^19:26Y sus moradores fueron de corto poder, quebrantados y confundidos, fueron cual hierba del campo, como legumbre verde, como heno de los terrados, marchitado antes de su madurez. ^19:27Yo conozco tu sentarte, tu salir y tu entrar, y tu furor contra mí. ^19:28Por cuanto te has airado contra mí, y tu estruendo ha subido a mis oídos, yo por tanto pondré mi gancho en tu nariz, y mi freno en tus labios, y te haré volver por el camino por donde viniste’.

^19:29“Y esto te será por señal: este año comerás lo que nacerá de suyo, y el segundo año lo que nacerá de suyo; y el tercer año sembrad y segad, plantad viñas y comed de su fruto. ^19:30Y lo que hubiere escapado, lo que habrá quedado de la casa de Judá, tornará a echar raíz abajo, y hará fruto arriba: ^19:31porque saldrá de Jerusalén un remanente, y del monte de Sión los que escaparen; el celo de Jehová de los ejércitos hará esto’. ^19:32Por tanto, Jehová dice así del rey de Asiria, ‘No entrará en esta ciudad, ni echará saeta en ella; ni vendrá delante de ella escudo, ni será echado contra ella baluarte. ^19:33Por el camino que vino se volverá, y no entrará en esta ciudad,’ dice Jehová. ^19:34‘Porque yo ampararé a esta ciudad para salvarla, por amor a mí mismo, y por amor a David mi siervo’”.

^19:35Y aconteció que la misma noche salió el ángel de Jehová, e hirió en el campamento de los asirios ciento ochenta y cinco mil; y cuando se levantaron por la mañana, he aquí, todo era cuerpos de muertos. ^19:36Entonces Senaquerib, rey de Asiria partió, y fue y regresó a Nínive, donde se quedó. ^19:37Y aconteció que mientras él adoraba en el templo de Nisroc su dios, Adramelec y Sarezer sus hijos lo mataron a espada; y huyeron a tierra de Ararat. Y reinó en su lugar Esar-hadón su hijo.

§El complemento   Cuerpo: Los pecados del hijo y nieto de Ezequías hicieron imposible que Josías salvara a Judá de la ira de Dios (2 Reyes 20:1 - 24:17)

¶Lo opuesto   La oración de Ezequías para la curación fue respondida por Jehová con un gran signo y maravilla (2 Reyes 20:1 - 21)

^20:1En aquellos días Ezequías cayó enfermo de muerte, y vino a él el Profeta Isaías, hijo de Amoz, y le dijo, “Jehová dice así, ‘Pon tu casa en orden: porque morirás, y no vivirás’”. ^20:2Entonces volvió él su rostro a la pared, y oró a Jehová, y dijo, ^20:3“Te ruego, oh Jehová, te ruego que hagas memoria de que he andado delante de ti en verdad y con íntegro corazón, y que he hecho las cosas que te agradan”. Y lloró Ezequías con gran lloro.

^20:4Y aconteció que antes que Isaías saliese hasta la mitad del patio, vino Palabra de Jehová a Isaías, diciendo, ^20:5“Vuelve, y di a Ezequías, príncipe de mi pueblo, ‘Así dice Jehová, el Dios de David tu padre, ‘Yo he oído tu oración, y he visto tus lágrimas; he aquí yo te sano; al tercer día subirás a la Casa de Jehová. ^20:6Y añadiré a tus días quince años, y te libraré a ti y a esta ciudad de mano del rey de Asiria; y ampararé esta ciudad por amor de mí, y por amor de David mi siervo’’”.

^20:7Y dijo Isaías, “Tomad masa de higos”. Y tomándola, la pusieron sobre la llaga, y sanó. ^20:8Y Ezequías había dicho a Isaías, “¿Qué señal tendré de que Jehová me sanará, y que subiré a la Casa de Jehová al tercer día?”. ^20:9Y respondió Isaías, “Esta señal tendrás de Jehová, de que Jehová hará esto que ha dicho: ¿Avanzará la sombra diez grados, o retrocederá diez grados?”. ^20:10Y Ezequías respondió, “Fácil cosa es que la sombra decline diez grados; pero no que la sombra vuelva atrás diez grados”. ^20:11Entonces el Profeta Isaías clamó a Jehová; e hizo volver la sombra por los grados que había descendido en el reloj de Acaz, diez grados atrás.

^20:12En aquel tiempo Berodac-baladán hijo de Baladán, rey de Babilonia, envió cartas y un presente a Ezequías: porque había oído que Ezequías había caído enfermo. ^20:13Y Ezequías los oyó, y les mostró toda la casa de sus tesoros, plata, oro, y especiería, y preciosos ungüentos; y la casa de sus armas, y todo lo que había en sus tesoros; ninguna cosa quedó que Ezequías no les mostrase, así en su casa como en todo su señorío. ^20:14Entonces el Profeta Isaías vino al rey Ezequías, y le dijo, “¿Qué dijeron aquellos varones, y de dónde vinieron a ti?”. Y Ezequías le respondió, “De lejanas tierras han venido, de Babilonia”. ^20:15Y él le volvió a decir, “¿Qué vieron en tu casa?”. Y Ezequías respondió, “Vieron todo lo que hay en mi casa; nada quedó en mis tesoros que no les mostrase”. ^20:16Entonces Isaías dijo a Ezequías, “Oye Palabra de Jehová: ^20:17‘‘He aquí vienen días, en que todo lo que hay en tu casa, y todo lo que tus padres han atesorado hasta hoy, será llevado a Babilonia, sin quedar nada,’ dice Jehová. ^20:18‘Y de tus hijos que saldrán de ti, que habrás engendrado, tomarán; y serán eunucos en el palacio del rey de Babilonia’’”. ^20:19Entonces Ezequías dijo a Isaías, “La Palabra de Jehová que has hablado, es buena”. Después dijo, “¿Pero no habrá paz y verdad en mis días?”.

^20:20Los demás hechos de Ezequías, y todo su poderío, y cómo hizo el estanque, y el conducto, y metió las aguas en la ciudad, ¿no están escritos en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá? ^20:21Y durmió Ezequías con sus padres, y reinó en su lugar Manasés su hijo.

¶Lo opuesto   El hijo y el nieto de Ezequías rechazaron a Jehová y adoraron ídolos (2 Reyes 21:1 - 26)

^21:1Doce años tenía Manasés cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó en Jerusalén cincuenta y cinco años; el nombre de su madre era Hefziba. ^21:2E hizo lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, según las abominaciones de las naciones que Jehová había echado delante de los hijos de Israel: ^21:3porque él volvió a edificar los lugares altos que Ezequías su padre había derribado, y levantó altares a Baal, e hizo una imagen de Asera, como había hecho Acab rey de Israel; y adoró a todo el ejército del cielo, y sirvió a aquellas cosas. ^21:4Asimismo edificó altares en la Casa de Jehová, de la cual Jehová había dicho, “Yo pondré mi Nombre en Jerusalén”. ^21:5Y edificó altares para todo el ejército del cielo en los dos atrios de la Casa de Jehová. ^21:6Y pasó a su hijo por fuego, y miró en tiempos, y fue agorero, e instituyó encantadores y adivinos, multiplicando así el hacer lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, para provocarlo a ira. ^21:7Y puso una imagen tallada de Asera que él había hecho, en la casa de la cual había Jehová dicho a David y a Salomón su hijo, “Yo pondré mi Nombre para siempre en esta casa, y en Jerusalén, a la cual escogí de todas las tribus de Israel; ^21:8y no volveré a hacer que el pie de Israel sea movido de la tierra que di a sus padres, con tal que guarden y hagan conforme a todas las cosas que yo les he mandado, y conforme a toda la Ley que mi siervo Moisés les mandó”. ^21:9Pero ellos no escucharon; y Manasés los indujo a que hiciesen más mal que las gentes que Jehová destruyó delante de los hijos de Israel. ^21:10Y habló Jehová por medio de sus siervos los Profetas, diciendo, ^21:11“Por cuanto Manasés rey de Judá ha hecho estas abominaciones, y ha hecho más mal que todo lo que hicieron los amorreos que fueron antes de él, y también ha hecho pecar a Judá con sus ídolos; ^21:12por tanto, así dice Jehová el Dios de Israel, ‘He aquí yo traigo tal mal sobre Jerusalén y sobre Judá, que el que lo oyere, le retiñirán ambos oídos. ^21:13Y extenderé sobre Jerusalén el cordel de Samaria, y la plomada de la casa de Acab; y yo limpiaré a Jerusalén como se limpia un plato, que se refriega y se pone boca abajo. ^21:14Y desampararé el resto de mi heredad, y los entregaré en manos de sus enemigos; y serán para presa y despojo de todos sus adversarios; ^21:15por cuanto han hecho lo malo ante mis ojos, y me han provocado a ira, desde el día que sus padres salieron de Egipto hasta hoy’”. ^21:16Fuera de esto, derramó Manasés mucha sangre inocente en gran manera, hasta llenar a Jerusalén de un extremo a otro; además de su pecado con que hizo pecar a Judá, para que hiciese lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová.

^21:17Los demás hechos de Manasés, y todas las cosas que hizo, y su pecado que cometió, ¿no están escritos en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá? ^21:18Y durmió Manasés con sus padres, y fue sepultado en el huerto de su casa, en el huerto de Uza; y reinó en su lugar Amón su hijo.

^21:19Veintidós años tenía Amón cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó dos años en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre era Mesalemet hija de Harus de Jotba. ^21:20E hizo lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, como había hecho Manasés su padre. ^21:21Y anduvo en todos los caminos en que su padre anduvo, y sirvió a los ídolos a los cuales había servido su padre, y a ellos adoró. ^21:22Y dejó a Jehová el Dios de sus padres, y no anduvo en el camino de Jehová.

^21:23Y los siervos de Amón conspiraron contra él, y mataron al rey en su casa. ^21:24Entonces el pueblo de la tierra mató a todos los que habían conspirado contra el rey Amón; y puso el pueblo de la tierra por rey en su lugar a Josías su hijo.

^21:25Los demás hechos de Amón, que él hizo, ¿no están escritos en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá? ^21:26Y fue sepultado en su sepulcro en el huerto de Uza, y reinó en su lugar Josías su hijo.

¶El complemento   Josías reconstruyó el Templo de Jehová y el Libro de Deuteronomio fue descubierto adentro (2 Reyes 22:1 - 20a)

^22:1Ocho años tenía Josías cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó en Jerusalén treinta y un años. El nombre de su madre fue Jedida hija de Adaías de Boscat. ^22:2E hizo lo recto ante los ojos de Jehová, y anduvo en todo el camino de David su padre, sin apartarse ni a derecha ni a izquierda.

^22:3Y aconteció que a los dieciocho años del rey Josías, el rey envió a Safán, hijo de Azalías, hijo de Mesulam, escriba, a la Casa de Jehová, diciendo, ^22:4“Ve a Hilcías, sumo sacerdote, dile que recoja el dinero que se ha metido en la Casa de Jehová, que han juntado del pueblo los guardianes de la puerta; ^22:5y que lo pongan en manos de los que hacen la obra, que tienen cargo de la Casa de Jehová, y que lo entreguen a los que hacen la obra de la Casa de Jehová, para reparar las grietas de la casa; ^22:6a los carpinteros, a los maestros y a los albañiles, para comprar madera y piedra de cantería para reparar la casa”. ^22:7Y no se les pedía cuentas del dinero entregado en sus manos: porque ellos procedían con fidelidad.

^22:8Entonces dijo el sumo sacerdote Hilcías a Safán escriba, “He hallado el Libro de la Ley en la Casa de Jehová”. E Hilcías dio el libro a Safán, y lo leyó. ^22:9Viniendo luego Safán escriba al rey, dio al rey la respuesta, y dijo, “Tus siervos han juntado el dinero que se halló en el templo, y lo han entregado en poder de los que hacen la obra, que tienen cargo de la Casa de Jehová”. ^22:10Asimismo Safán escriba declaró al rey, diciendo, “Hilcías el sacerdote me ha dado un Libro”. Y lo leyó Safán delante del rey.

^22:11Y sucedió que cuando el rey hubo oído las palabras del Libro de la Ley, rasgó sus vestiduras. ^22:12Luego mandó el rey a Hilcías el sacerdote, y a Ahicam hijo de Safán, y a Acbor hijo de Micaías, y a Safán escriba, y a Asaías siervo del rey, diciendo, ^22:13“Id, y consultad a Jehová por mí, y por el pueblo, y por todo Judá, acerca de las palabras de este Libro que se ha hallado: porque grande es la ira de Jehová que se ha encendido contra nosotros, por cuanto nuestros padres no escucharon las palabras de este Libro, para hacer conforme a todo lo que nos fue escrito”. ^22:14Entonces fue Hilcías el sacerdote, y Ahicam y Acbor y Safán y Asaías, a Hulda profetisa, esposa de Salum hijo de Ticva hijo de Araas, guarda de las vestiduras, la cual moraba en Jerusalén en la segunda parte de la ciudad, y hablaron con ella. ^22:15Y ella les dijo, “Así dice Jehová el Dios de Israel, ‘Decid al varón que os envió a mí: ^22:16‘Así dice Jehová, ‘He aquí yo traigo mal sobre este lugar, y sobre los que en él moran, según, todas las palabras del Libro que ha leído el rey de Judá, ^22:17por cuanto me dejaron a mí, y quemaron incienso a dioses ajenos, provocándome a ira en toda obra de sus manos; y mi furor se ha encendido contra este lugar, y no se apagará’’.

^22:18“Pero al rey de Judá que os ha enviado para que consultaseis a Jehová, diréis así, ‘Así dice Jehová el Dios de Israel, ‘Por cuanto oíste las palabras del Libro, ^22:19y tu corazón se enterneció, y te humillaste delante de Jehová, cuando oíste lo que yo he pronunciado contra este lugar y contra sus moradores, que vendrían a ser asolados y malditos, y rasgaste tus vestiduras, y lloraste en mi presencia, también yo te he oído,’ dice Jehová. ^22:20‘Por tanto, he aquí yo te recogeré con tus padres, y tú serás recogido a tu sepulcro en paz, y no verán tus ojos todo el mal que yo traigo sobre este lugar’’”.

¶El complemento   Josías intentó apaciguar la ira de Dios con la reforma externa de la nación de Judá, pero fracasó (2 Reyes 22:20b - 23:30)

Y dieron la respuesta al rey. ^23:1Entonces el rey mandó que se reuniesen con él todos los ancianos de Judá y de Jerusalén. ^23:2Y subió el rey a la Casa de Jehová con todos los varones de Judá, y con todos los moradores de Jerusalén, con los sacerdotes y Profetas y con todo el pueblo, desde el más chico hasta el más grande; y leyó, oyéndolo ellos, todas las palabras del libro del pacto que había sido hallado en la Casa de Jehová. ^23:3Y el rey se puso en pie junto a la columna, e hizo pacto delante de Jehová, de que irían en pos de Jehová, y guardarían sus Mandamientos, y sus Testimonios, y sus Estatutos con todo su corazón y con toda su alma, y que cumplirían las palabras del pacto que estaban escritas en aquel libro. Y todo el pueblo confirmó el pacto.

^23:4Entonces mandó el rey al sumo sacerdote Hilcías, y a los sacerdotes de segundo orden, y a los guardianes de la puerta, que sacasen del Templo de Jehová todos los vasos que habían sido hechos para Baal, para Asera, y para todo el ejército del cielo; y los quemó fuera de Jerusalén en el campo de Cedrón, e hizo llevar las cenizas de ellos a Betel. ^23:5Y quitó a los sacerdotes idólatras que habían puesto los reyes de Judá para que quemasen incienso en los lugares altos en las ciudades de Judá, y en los alrededores de Jerusalén; y asimismo a los que quemaban incienso a Baal, al sol y a la luna, y a los signos del zodiaco y a todo el ejército del cielo. ^23:6También sacó la imagen de Asera fuera de la Casa de Jehová, fuera de Jerusalén, al torrente de Cedrón, y la quemó en el torrente de Cedrón, y la redujo a polvo, y echó el polvo de ella sobre los sepulcros de los hijos del pueblo. ^23:7Además derribó las casas de los sodomitas que estaban en la Casa de Jehová, en las cuales las mujeres tejían pabellones para Asera. ^23:8E hizo venir todos los sacerdotes de las ciudades de Judá, y profanó los lugares altos donde los sacerdotes quemaban incienso, desde Gabaa hasta Beerseba; y derribó los altares de las puertas que estaban a la entrada de la puerta de Josué, gobernador de la ciudad, que estaban a la mano izquierda, a la puerta de la ciudad. ^23:9(Pero los sacerdotes de los lugares altos no subían al altar de Jehová en Jerusalén, sólo comían panes sin levadura entre sus hermanos.) ^23:10Asimismo profanó a Tofet, que está en el valle del hijo de Hinom, para que ninguno pasase su hijo o su hija por fuego a Moloc. ^23:11Quitó también los caballos que los reyes de Judá habían dedicado al sol a la entrada del Templo de Jehová, junto a la cámara de Natán-melec eunuco, el cual tenía cargo de los ejidos; y quemó al fuego los carros del sol. ^23:12Derribó además el rey los altares que estaban sobre la azotea de la sala de Acaz, que los reyes de Judá habían hecho, y los altares que había hecho Manasés en los dos atrios de la Casa de Jehová; y de allí corrió y arrojó el polvo en el torrente de Cedrón. ^23:13Asimismo profanó el rey los lugares altos que estaban delante de Jerusalén, a la mano derecha del monte de la destrucción, los cuales Salomón rey de Israel había edificado a Astarot, abominación de los sidonios, y a Quemos abominación de Moab, y a Milcom abominación de los hijos de Amón. ^23:14Y quebró las estatuas, y derribó las imágenes de Asera, y llenó el lugar de ellos de huesos de hombres. ^23:15Igualmente el altar que estaba en Betel, y el lugar alto que había hecho Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, el que hizo pecar a Israel, aquel altar y el alto destruyó; y quemó el lugar alto, y lo hizo polvo, y puso fuego a la imagen de Asera. ^23:16Y se volvió Josías, y viendo los sepulcros que estaban allí en el monte, envió y sacó los huesos de los sepulcros, y los quemó sobre el altar para contaminarlo, conforme a la Palabra de Jehová que había profetizado el varón de Dios, el cual había anunciado estas cosas. ^23:17Y después dijo, “¿Qué monumento es éste que veo?”. Y los de la ciudad le respondieron, “Éste es el sepulcro del varón de Dios que vino de Judá, y profetizó estas cosas que tú has hecho sobre el altar de Betel”. ^23:18Y él dijo, “Dejadlo; ninguno mueva sus huesos”. Y así fueron preservados sus huesos, y los huesos del profeta que había venido de Samaria. ^23:19Y todas las casas de los lugares altos que estaban en las ciudades de Samaria, las cuales habían hecho los reyes de Israel para provocar a ira al Señor, las quitó también Josías, e hizo de ellas como había hecho en Betel. ^23:20Mató además sobre los altares a todos los sacerdotes de los lugares altos que allí estaban, y quemó sobre ellos huesos de hombres, y volvió a Jerusalén.

^23:21Entonces mandó el rey a todo el pueblo, diciendo, “Haced la Pascua a Jehová vuestro Dios, conforme a lo que está escrito en el Libro de este Pacto”. ^23:22En verdad que no se había celebrado tal Pascua desde los días de los jueces que gobernaron a Israel, ni en todos los días de los reyes de Israel, y de los reyes de Judá. ^23:23En el año dieciocho del rey Josías se celebró aquella Pascua a Jehová en Jerusalén. ^23:24Asimismo barrió Josías los encantadores, los adivinos, las imágenes y los ídolos, y todas las abominaciones que se veían en la tierra de Judá y en Jerusalén, para cumplir las palabras de la Ley que estaban escritas en el libro que el sacerdote Hilcías había hallado en la Casa de Jehová. ^23:25No hubo antes otro rey como él que se convirtiese a Jehová con todo su corazón, y con toda su alma, y con todas sus fuerzas, conforme a toda la Ley de Moisés; ni después de él se levantó otro igual.

^23:26Con todo, Jehová no desistió del furor de su grande ira con la cual se había encendido su enojo contra Judá, a causa de todas las provocaciones con que Manasés le había irritado. ^23:27Y dijo Jehová, “También quitaré de mi presencia a Judá, como quité a Israel, y desecharé a esta ciudad que había escogido, a Jerusalén, y a la casa de la cual había yo dicho, ‘Mi Nombre estará allí’”.

^23:28Los demás hechos de Josías, y todo lo que hizo, ¿no está escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá? ^23:29En aquellos días Faraón Necao rey de Egipto subió contra el rey de Asiria al río Éufrates, y salió contra él el rey Josías; pero aquél así que le vio, lo mató en Meguido. ^23:30Y sus siervos lo pusieron en un carro, y lo trajeron muerto de Meguido a Jerusalén, y lo sepultaron en su sepulcro. Entonces el pueblo de la tierra tomó a Joacaz hijo de Josías, y le ungieron y le pusieron por rey en lugar de su padre.

¶Único   Judá fue gobernado primero por el rey de Egipto, y luego por el rey de Babilonia (2 Reyes 23:31 - 24:17)

^23:31Veintitrés años tenía Joacaz cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó tres meses en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre era Amutal, hija de Jeremías de Libna. ^23:32E hizo lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, conforme a todas las cosas que sus padres habían hecho.

^23:33Y Faraón Necao le encarceló en Ribla en la provincia de Hamat, para que no reinase él en Jerusalén; e impuso sobre la tierra un tributo de cien talentos de plata, y uno de oro. ^23:34Entonces Faraón Necao puso por rey a Eliaquim hijo de Josías, en lugar de Josías su padre, y le cambió el nombre por el de Joacim; y tomó a Joacaz, y lo llevó a Egipto, y allí murió. ^23:35Y Joacim pagó a Faraón la plata y el oro; e impuso gravamen sobre la tierra para dar el dinero conforme al mandamiento de Faraón, sacando la plata y el oro del pueblo de la tierra, de cada uno según la estimación de su hacienda, para dar a Faraón Necao.

^23:36Veinticinco años tenía Joacim cuando comenzó a reinar, y once años reinó en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre era Zebuda hija de Pedaías, de Ruma. ^23:37E hizo lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, conforme a todas las cosas que sus padres habían hecho. ^24:1En su tiempo subió Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia, y Joacim vino a ser su siervo por tres años.

Pero luego volvió y se rebeló contra él. ^24:2Pero Jehová envió contra él tropas de caldeos, tropas de Sirios, tropas de moabitas y tropas de amonitas; los cuales envió contra Judá para que la destruyesen, conforme a la Palabra de Jehová que había hablado por sus siervos los Profetas. ^24:3Ciertamente vino esto contra Judá por mandato de Jehová, para quitarla de su presencia, por los pecados de Manasés, conforme a todo lo que él hizo; ^24:4asimismo por la sangre inocente que derramó, pues llenó a Jerusalén de sangre inocente; lo cual Jehová no quiso perdonar. ^24:5Los demás hechos de Joacim, y todo lo que hizo, ¿no está escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá? ^24:6Y durmió Joacim con sus padres, y reinó en su lugar Joaquín su hijo. ^24:7Y nunca más el rey de Egipto salió de su tierra: porque el rey de Babilonia le tomó todo lo que era suyo, desde el río de Egipto hasta el río Éufrates.

^24:8Dieciocho años tenía Joaquín cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó en Jerusalén tres meses. El nombre de su madre era Neusta hija de Elnatán, de Jerusalén. ^24:9E hizo lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, conforme a todas las cosas que había hecho su padre. ^24:10En aquel tiempo subieron los siervos de Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia contra Jerusalén y la ciudad fue sitiada. ^24:11Vino también Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia contra la ciudad, cuando sus siervos la tenían sitiada. ^24:12Entonces salió Joaquín rey de Judá al rey de Babilonia, él y su madre, sus siervos, sus príncipes y sus oficiales; y lo apresó el rey de Babilonia en el octavo año de su reinado. ^24:13Y sacó de allí todos los tesoros de la Casa de Jehová, y los tesoros de la casa real, y quebró en piezas todos los vasos de oro que había hecho Salomón rey de Israel en la Casa de Jehová, como Jehová había dicho. ^24:14Y llevó en cautiverio a toda Jerusalén, a todos los príncipes, y a todos los hombres valientes, hasta diez mil cautivos, y a todos los artesanos y herreros. No quedó nadie, excepto los pobres del pueblo de la tierra. ^24:15Asimismo llevó cautivos a Babilonia a Joaquín, y a la madre del rey, y a las esposas del rey, y a sus oficiales, y a los poderosos de la tierra; cautivos los llevó de Jerusalén a Babilonia. ^24:16A todos los hombres de guerra, que fueron siete mil, y a los artesanos y herreros, que fueron mil, y a todos los hombres fuertes y aptos para la guerra, llevó cautivos el rey de Babilonia. ^24:17Y el rey de Babilonia puso por rey en lugar de Joaquín a Matanías su tío, y le cambió el nombre por el de Sedequías.

§Único   Conclusión: Sedequías, rey de Judá, fue llevado cautivo a Babilonia, y el resto del pueblo huyó a Egipto (2 Reyes 24:18 - 25:30)

¶El complemento   Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, derrocó a Sedequías, rey de Judá, y le llevó a Babilonia (2 Reyes 24:18 - 25:7)

^24:18Veintiún años tenía Sedequías cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó en Jerusalén once años. El nombre de su madre era Amutal hija de Jeremías, de Libna.

^24:19E hizo lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, conforme a todo lo que había hecho Joacim. ^24:20Fue, pues, la ira de Jehová contra Jerusalén y Judá, hasta que los echó de su presencia. Y Sedequías se rebeló contra el rey de Babilonia.

^25:1Y aconteció en el noveno año de su reinado, en el mes décimo, en el día diez del mes, que Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia vino con todo su ejército contra Jerusalén, y la sitió; y levantaron contra ella baluartes alrededor. ^25:2Y la ciudad estuvo sitiada hasta el año undécimo del rey Sedequías.

^25:3A los nueve días del cuarto mes prevaleció el hambre en la ciudad, hasta que no hubo pan para el pueblo de la tierra. ^25:4Y abriendo una brecha en el muro de la ciudad, todos los hombres de guerra huyeron de noche por el camino de la puerta que estaba entre los dos muros, junto a los huertos del rey, estando los caldeos alrededor de la ciudad; y el rey se fue por el camino del desierto. ^25:5Y el ejército de los caldeos siguió al rey, y lo tomó en las llanuras de Jericó, habiéndose dispersado todo su ejército.

^25:6Y apresaron al rey y lo trajeron al rey de Babilonia a Ribla, y pronunciaron sentencia contra él. ^25:7Y degollaron a los hijos de Sedequías en presencia suya; y a Sedequías le sacaron los ojos, y atado con cadenas lo llevaron a Babilonia.

¶El complemento   El remanente de Judá en la tierra huyó a Egipto después de que Gedalías fue asesinado por Ismael (2 Reyes 25:8 - 30)

^25:8En el mes quinto, en el séptimo día del mes, siendo el año diecinueve de Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia, vino a Jerusalén Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, siervo del rey de Babilonia. ^25:9Y quemó la Casa de Jehová, y la casa del rey, y todas las casas de Jerusalén; y todas las casas de los príncipes quemó a fuego. ^25:10Y todo el ejército de los caldeos que estaba con el capitán de la guardia, derribó los muros alrededor de Jerusalén.

^25:11Y a los del pueblo que habían quedado en la ciudad, y a los que se habían juntado al rey de Babilonia, con los que habían quedado del vulgo, los llevó cautivos Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia. ^25:12Pero de los pobres de la tierra dejó Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, para que labrasen las viñas y las tierras. ^25:13Y quebraron los caldeos las columnas de bronce que estaban en la Casa de Jehová, y las bases, y el mar de bronce que estaba en la Casa de Jehová, y llevaron el bronce de ello a Babilonia. ^25:14También se llevaron las ollas, las paletas, las despabiladeras, los cucharones y todos los vasos de bronce con que ministraban. ^25:15Incensarios, cuencos, los que de oro, en oro, y los que de plata, en plata, todo lo llevó el capitán de la guardia. ^25:16Las dos columnas, un mar, y las bases que Salomón había hecho para la Casa de Jehová; y del bronce de todos estos vasos, no había peso. ^25:17La altura de una columna era de dieciocho codos y tenía encima un capitel de bronce, y la altura del capitel era de tres codos; y sobre el capitel había una red y granadas alrededor, todo de bronce; y semejante obra había en la otra columna con la red. ^25:18Tomó entonces el capitán de la guardia a Seraías, el primer sacerdote, y a Sofonías, el segundo sacerdote y a los tres guardas de la puerta; ^25:19y de la ciudad tomó a un oficial que estaba a cargo de los hombres de guerra, y a cinco varones de los que estaban en la presencia del rey que se hallaban en la ciudad; y al principal escriba del ejército, que reclutaba la gente del país; y sesenta varones del pueblo de la tierra, que se hallaban en la ciudad. ^25:20Éstos tomó Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, y los llevó a Ribla al rey de Babilonia. ^25:21Y el rey de Babilonia los hirió y mató en Ribla, en tierra de Hamat. Así fue trasportado Judá de sobre su tierra.

^25:22Y al pueblo que Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia dejó en tierra de Judá, puso por gobernador a Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam hijo de Safán. ^25:23Y oyendo todos los príncipes del ejército, ellos y su gente, que el rey de Babilonia había puesto por gobernador a Gedalías, vinieron a él en Mizpa, esto es, Ismael hijo de Netanías, y Johanán hijo de Carea, y Seraías hijo de Tanhumet netofatita, y Jaazanías hijo de un maacatita, ellos con los suyos. ^25:24Entonces Gedalías les hizo juramento, a ellos y a los suyos, y les dijo, “No temáis de ser siervos de los caldeos; habitad en la tierra, y servid al rey de Babilonia, y os irá bien”.

^25:25Pero sucedió que en el mes séptimo vino Ismael hijo de Netanías, hijo de Elisama, de la estirpe real, y con él diez varones, e hirieron a Gedalías, y murió; y también a los judíos y caldeos que estaban con él en Mizpa. ^25:26Y levantándose todo el pueblo, desde el menor hasta el mayor, con los capitanes del ejército, se fueron a Egipto por temor de los caldeos.

^25:27Y aconteció a los treinta y siete años del cautiverio de Joaquín rey de Judá, en el mes duodécimo, a los veintisiete días del mes, que Evil-merodac rey de Babilonia, en el primer año de su reinado, levantó la cabeza de Joaquín rey de Judá, sacándolo de la casa de la cárcel. ^25:28Y le habló bien, y puso su asiento sobre el asiento de los reyes que estaban con él en Babilonia. ^25:29Y le cambió las vestiduras de su prisión. Y comió siempre delante de él todos los días de su vida; ^25:30y diariamente le fue dado su sustento de parte del rey, una porción para cada día, todos los días de su vida.
