Joshua & Judges, Chapter 2.1: Israel failed to drive out the Canaanites, whose gods were a snare to them (1:1 - 5:31a)

^1:3And Judah said to Simeon his brother, “Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and likewise I will go with you into your lot.” So Simeon went with him. ^1:4And Judah went up; and Jehovah delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand; and they slew ten thousand men of them in Bezek.

^1:5And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek; and they fought against him; and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites. ^1:6But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes. ^1:7And Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their food under my table; as I have done, so has God repaid me.” And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

^1:8Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire. ^1:9And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley. ^1:10And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-arba); and they slew Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai. ^1:11And from there he went against the inhabitants of Debir; and the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher. ^1:12And Caleb said, “He that smites Kirjath-sepher and takes it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to be his wife.” ^1:13And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife. ^1:14And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field; and she dismounted from her donkey; and Caleb said to her, “What do you want?” ^1:15And she said to him, “Give me a blessing: for you have given me a south land; give me also springs of water.” And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

^1:16And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people. ^1:17And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah. ^1:18Also Judah took Gaza with its territory, and Askelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory. ^1:19And Jehovah was with Judah; and he drove out the inhabitants of the mountain, but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron. ^1:20And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses said; and he expelled from there the three sons of Anak.

^1:21And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem until this day.

^1:22And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel; and Jehovah was with them. ^1:23And the house of Joseph sent to spy out Bethel (now the name of the city before was Luz). ^1:24And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said to him, “Please, show us the entrance into the city; and we will show you mercy.” ^1:25And when he showed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family. ^1:26And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called its name Luz, which is its name until this day.

^1:27Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns; but the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land. ^1:28And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, but did not utterly drive them out.

^1:29Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them. ^1:30Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries. ^1:31Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob; ^1:32but the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out. ^1:33Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became tributaries to them. ^1:34And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not allow them to come down to the valley; ^1:35but the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim. Yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries. ^1:36And the territory of the Amorites was from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.

^2:1And an angel of Jehovah came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, “I made you to go up out of Egypt; and have brought you to the land which I swore to your fathers. And I said, ‘I will never break my Covenant with you. ^2:2And you shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; you shall throw down their altars.’ But you have not obeyed my voice. Why have you done this? ^2:3Therefore I also said, ‘I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare to you.’” ^2:4And it came to pass, when the angel of Jehovah spoke these words to all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept. ^2:5And they called the name of that place Bochim; and they sacrificed there to Jehovah.

^2:8And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Jehovah, died, being one hundred and ten years old. ^2:9And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash.

^2:10And also all that generation were gathered to their fathers.

And there arose another generation after them, which did not know Jehovah, nor yet the works that he had done for Israel. ^2:11And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of Jehovah, and served Baalim. ^2:12And they forsook Jehovah God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves to them, and provoked Jehovah to anger. ^2:13And they forsook Jehovah, and served Baal and Ashtaroth.

^2:14And the anger of Jehovah was hot against Israel; and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that plundered them. And he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies. ^2:15Wheresoever they went out, the hand of Jehovah was against them for evil, as Jehovah had said, and as Jehovah had sworn to them; and they were greatly distressed.

¶Opposite   The people would not listen to their judges, so Jehovah left the Gentile nations in the land to test their loyalty to Him (2:16 - 3:4)

^2:16Nevertheless Jehovah raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that plundered them. ^2:17And yet they would not listen to their judges, but went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves to them. They turned quickly out of the way which their fathers had walked in, who had obeyed the Commandments of Jehovah; but they did not do so.

^2:18And when Jehovah raised them up judges, then Jehovah was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented Jehovah because of their groaning by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them. ^2:19And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down to them. They ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.

^2:20And the anger of Jehovah was hot against Israel; and he said, “Because this people has transgressed my Covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not given heed to my voice, ^2:21I also will not henceforth drive out from before them any of the nations which Joshua left when he died, ^2:22that through them I may test Israel, to see whether they will keep the way of Jehovah to walk in it, as their fathers kept it, or not.” ^2:23Therefore Jehovah left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither did he deliver them into the hand of Joshua.

^3:1Now these are the nations which Jehovah left, to test Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan ^3:2(only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing of it): ^3:3namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon to the entering in of Hamath.

^3:4And they were to test Israel by them, to know whether they would give heed to the Commandments of Jehovah, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

¶Complement   Othniel the son of Kenaz delivered Israel from the king of Mesopotamia (3:5 - 11)

^3:5And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites; ^3:6and they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods. ^3:7And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of Jehovah, and forgot Jehovah their God, and served Baalim and the images of Asherah.

^3:8Therefore the anger of Jehovah was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the children of Israel served Chushan-rishathaim eight years.

^3:9And when the children of Israel cried to Jehovah, Jehovah raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them: Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother. ^3:10And the Spirit of Jehovah came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war; and Jehovah delivered Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushan-rishathaim.

^3:11And the land had rest forty years.

And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

¶Complement   Ehud the son of Gera delivered Israel from the Moabites (3:12 - 30)

^3:12And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of Jehovah; and Jehovah strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of Jehovah. ^3:13And he gathered to him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees. ^3:14So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

^3:15But when the children of Israel cried to Jehovah, Jehovah raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a left-handed man; and by him the children of Israel sent a present to Eglon the king of Moab. ^3:16But Ehud made himself a dagger which had two edges, one cubit long; and he girded it under his clothing upon his right thigh. ^3:17And he brought the present to Eglon king of Moab; and Eglon was a very fat man. ^3:18And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that carried the present. ^3:19But he himself returned from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, “I have a secret errand to you, O king"; who said, “Keep silence.” And all that stood by him went out from him. ^3:20And Ehud came to him; and he was sitting in a summer parlor, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, “I have a message from God to you.” And he arose out of his seat. ^3:21And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly; ^3:22and the haft also went in after the blade, and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out. ^3:23Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlor upon him, and locked them. ^3:24When he went out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlor were locked, they said, “Surely he is relieving himself in his summer chamber.” ^3:25And they waited until they were ashamed; and, behold, he did not open the doors of the parlor; therefore they took a key, and opened them; and, behold, their lord had fallen down dead on the earth. ^3:26And Ehud escaped while they waited, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped to Seirath.

^3:27And it came to pass, when he came, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mountain, and he before them. ^3:28And he said to them, “Follow after me: for Jehovah has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand!”. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and allowed not a single man to pass over. ^3:29And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all strong, and all men of valor; and not a single man escaped. ^3:30So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel.

And the land had rest eighty years.

^3:31And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who slew six hundred men of the Philistines with an ox goad; and he also delivered Israel.

¶Unique   Barak the son of Abinoam delivered Israel from Jabin king of Hazor, with the support of Deborah a prophetess (4:1 - 24)

^4:1And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of Jehovah, when Ehud was dead. ^4:2And Jehovah sold them into the hand of Jabin, a king of Canaan that reigned in Hazor, the captain of whose army was Sisera, who dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles. ^4:3And the children of Israel cried to Jehovah: for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel.

^4:4And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time. ^4:5And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in mount Ephraim; and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment. ^4:6And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-Naphtali, and said to him, “Has not Jehovah God of Israel commanded, saying, ‘Go and draw toward mount Tabor, and take with you ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun’? ^4:7‘And I will draw Sisera, the captain of Jabin's army, with his chariots and his multitude, to the river Kishon to you; and I will deliver him into your hand.’“ ^4:8And Barak said to her, “If you will go with me, then I will go; but if you will not go with me, then I will not go.” ^4:9And she said, “I will surely go with you; notwithstanding the journey that you take shall not be for your honor: for Jehovah shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman.” And Deborah arose; and she went with Barak to Kedesh. ^4:10And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; and he went up with ten thousand men at his feet; and Deborah went up with him.

^4:11Now Heber the Kenite, which was of the children of Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, had separated himself from the Kenites, and pitched his tent unto the plain of Zaanaim, which is by Kedesh. ^4:12And they showed Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam had gone up to mount Tabor. ^4:13And Sisera gathered together all his chariots, even nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people that were with him, from Harosheth of the Gentiles to the river of Kishon. ^4:14And Deborah said to Barak, ”Get up: for this is the day in which Jehovah has delivered Sisera into your hand. Has not Jehovah gone out before you?” So Barak went down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him. ^4:15And Jehovah smote Sisera, and all his chariots, and all his army, with the edge of the sword before Barak, so that Sisera dismounted from his chariot, and fled away on his feet. ^4:16But Barak pursued after the chariots, and after the army, as far as Harosheth of the Gentiles; and all the army of Sisera fell upon the edge of the sword; and not a man was left.

^4:17Nevertheless Sisera fled away on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite: for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite. ^4:18And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said to him, “Turn in, my lord; turn in to me: fear not.” And when he had turned in to her into the tent, she covered him with a blanket. ^4:19And he said to her, “Please, give me a little water to drink: for I am thirsty.” And she opened a bottle of milk, and gave him drink, and covered him. ^4:20Again he said to her, “Stand in the door of the tent, and it shall be, when any man comes and inquires of you, and asks, ‘Is there any man here?’, that you shall say, ‘No.’” ^4:21Then Jael Heber's wife took a peg of the tent, and took a hammer in her hand, and went softly to him, and smote the peg into his temples, and fastened it into the ground: for he was fast asleep and weary. So he died. ^4:22And, behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said to him, “Come, and I will show you the man whom you seek.” And when he came into her tent, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the peg was in his temples.

^4:23So God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan before the children of Israel. ^4:24And the hand of the children of Israel prospered; and they prevailed against Jabin the king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.

^5:6“In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were unoccupied, and the travelers walked through byways. ^5:7The inhabitants of the villages ceased, they ceased in Israel, until that I Deborah arose, that I arose a mother in Israel. ^5:8They chose new gods, then war was in the gates. Was there a shield or spear seen among forty thousand in Israel? ^5:9My heart is toward the governors of Israel, that offered themselves willingly among the people. Bless Jehovah.

^5:10“Speak, you that ride on white donkeys, you that sit in judgment, and walk by the way. ^5:11They that are delivered from the noise of archers in the places of drawing water, there shall they rehearse the righteous acts of Jehovah, even the righteous acts toward the inhabitants of his villages in Israel, then shall the people of Jehovah go down to the gates.

^5:12“Awake, awake, Deborah; awake, awake, utter a song; arise, Barak, and lead your captivity captive, you son of Abinoam. ^5:13Then he made him that remains rule over the nobles among the people; Jehovah made me have dominion over the mighty. ^5:14Out of Ephraim was there a root of them against Amalek; after you, Benjamin, among your people; out of Machir came down governors, and out of Zebulun they that handle the pen of the writer. ^5:15And the princes of Issachar were with Deborah; even Issachar, and also Barak: he was sent on foot into the valley. For the divisions of Reuben, there were great thoughts of heart. ^5:16Why do you remain among the sheepfolds, to hear the bleating of the flocks? For the divisions of Reuben, there was great searching of heart. ^5:17Gilead abode beyond Jordan; and why did Dan remain in ships? Asher continued on the sea shore, and remained in his breaches. ^5:18Zebulun and Naphtali were a people that risked their lives to the death in the high places of the field.”

^5:24“Blessed above women shall be Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite; blessed shall she be above women in the tent. ^5:25He asked water, and she gave him milk; she brought forth butter in a lordly dish. ^5:26She put her hand to the peg, and her right hand to the workmen's hammer; and with the hammer she smote Sisera, she smote off his head, when she had pierced and stricken through his temples. ^5:27At her feet he bowed, he fell, he lay down; at her feet he bowed, he fell; where he bowed, there he fell down dead.

^5:28“The mother of Sisera looked out at a window, and cried through the lattice, ‘Why is his chariot so long in coming? Why do the wheels of his chariots delay?’ ^5:29Her wise ladies answered her (indeed, she returned answer to herself), ^5:30‘Have they not sped? Have they not divided the plunder: to every man a girl or two; to Sisera a plunder of diverse colors, a plunder of diverse colors of needlework, of diverse colors of needlework on both sides, appropriate for the necks of them that take the plunder?’

^5:31“So let all your enemies perish, O Jehovah; but let them that love him be as the sun when he goes forth in his might.”

^1:3Y Judá dijo a Simeón su hermano, “Sube conmigo a mi suerte, y peleemos contra el cananeo, y yo también iré contigo a tu suerte”. Y Simeón fue con él. ^1:4Y subió Judá, y Jehová entregó en sus manos al cananeo y al ferezeo; y de ellos hirieron en Bezec diez mil hombres.

^1:5Y hallaron a Adoni-bezec en Bezec, y pelearon contra él; e hirieron al cananeo y al ferezeo. ^1:6Pero Adoni-bezec huyó; y le siguieron, y le prendieron, y le cortaron los pulgares de las manos y de los pies. ^1:7Entonces dijo Adoni-bezec, “Setenta reyes, cortados los pulgares de sus manos y de sus pies, recogían las migajas debajo de mi mesa; como yo hice, así me ha pagado Dios”. Y le metieron en Jerusalén, donde murió.

^1:8Y habían combatido los hijos de Judá a Jerusalén, y la habían tomado, y herido a filo de espada, y puesto a fuego la ciudad. ^1:9Después los hijos de Judá descendieron para pelear contra el cananeo que habitaba en las montañas, y en el sur, y en el valle. ^1:10Y partió Judá contra el cananeo que habitaba en Hebrón, la cual se llamaba antes Quiriat-arba; e hirieron a Sesai, y a Ahimán, y a Talmai. ^1:11Y de allí fue a los que habitaban en Debir, que antes se llamaba Quiriat-sefer. ^1:12Y dijo Caleb, “El que hiriere a Quiriat-sefer, y la tomare, yo le daré a Acsa mi hija por esposa”. ^1:13Y la tomó Otoniel hijo de Cenaz, hermano menor de Caleb; y él le dio a Acsa su hija por esposa. ^1:14Y sucedió que cuando ella vino a él, ella le persuadió para pedir a su padre un campo. Y ella se bajó del asno, y Caleb le dijo, “¿Qué quieres?”. ^1:15Ella entonces le respondió, “Dame una bendición; puesto que me has dado tierra de sequedal, dame también fuentes de aguas”. Entonces Caleb le dio las fuentes de arriba, y las fuentes de abajo.

^1:16Y los hijos del cineo, suegro de Moisés, subieron de la ciudad de las palmeras con los hijos de Judá, al desierto de Judá que está al sur de Arad; y fueron y habitaron con el pueblo. ^1:17Y fue Judá a su hermano Simeón, e hirieron al cananeo que habitaba en Sefat, y la asolaron; y pusieron por nombre a la ciudad, Horma. ^1:18Tomó también Judá a Gaza con su término, y a Ascalón con su término, y a Ecrón con su término. ^1:19Y Jehová estaba con Judá, y echó a los de las montañas; pero no pudo echar a los que habitaban en los llanos: porque ellos tenían carros herrados. ^1:20Y dieron Hebrón a Caleb, como Moisés había dicho; y él echó de allí a los tres hijos de Anac.

¶Lo opuesto   El resto de las tribus fallaron a expulsar a los cananeos fuera de su tierra (1:21 - 2:5)

^1:21Pero los hijos de Benjamín no echaron al jebuseo que habitaba en Jerusalén, y así el jebuseo habitó con los hijos de Benjamín en Jerusalén hasta hoy.

^1:22También los de la casa de José subieron a Betel; y Jehová fue con ellos. ^1:23Y los de la casa de José pusieron espías en Betel (la cual ciudad antes se llamaba Luz). ^1:24Y los que espiaban vieron un hombre que salía de la ciudad, y le dijeron, “Muéstranos ahora la entrada de la ciudad, y haremos contigo misericordia”. ^1:25Y él les mostró la entrada a la ciudad, y la hirieron a filo de espada; pero dejaron a aquel hombre con toda su familia. ^1:26Y se fue el hombre a la tierra de los heteos, y edificó una ciudad, a la cual llamó Luz; y éste es su nombre hasta hoy.

^1:27Tampoco Manasés echó a los de Bet-seán, ni a los de sus aldeas, ni a los de Taanac y sus aldeas, ni a los de Dor y sus aldeas, ni a los habitantes de Ibleam y sus aldeas, ni a los que habitaban en Meguido y en sus aldeas; pero los cananeos quisieron habitar en esta tierra. ^1:28Y sucedió que cuando Israel se hizo fuerte hizo al cananeo tributario, pero no lo echó del todo.

^1:29Tampoco Efraín echó al cananeo que habitaba en Gezer; antes habitó el cananeo en medio de ellos en Gezer. ^1:30Tampoco Zabulón echó a los que habitaban en Quitrón ni a los que habitaban en Naalal; pero el cananeo habitó en medio de él, y le fueron tributarios. ^1:31Tampoco Aser echó a los que habitaban en Aco, ni a los que habitaban en Sidón, ni en Ahlab, ni en Aczib, ni en Helba, ni en Afec, ni en Rehob. ^1:32Antes moró Aser entre los cananeos que habitaban en la tierra; pues no los echó. ^1:33Tampoco Neftalí echó a los que habitaban en Bet-semes, ni a los que habitaban en Bet-anat, sino que moró entre los cananeos que habitaban en la tierra; sin embargo los moradores de Bet-semes y los moradores de Bet-anatles les fueron tributarios. ^1:34Y los amorreos presionaron a los hijos de Dan hasta la montaña; y no los dejaron descender a la llanura. ^1:35Y quiso el amorreo habitar en la montaña de Heres, en Ajalón y en Saalbim; sin embargo la mano de la casa de José prevaleció, y los hicieron tributarios. ^1:36Y el término del amorreo fue desde la subida de Acrabim, desde la piedra, y arriba.

^2:1Y el Ángel de Jehová subió de Gilgal a Boquim, y dijo, “Yo os saqué de Egipto, y os introduje en la tierra de la cual había jurado a vuestros padres; y dije, ‘No invalidaré jamás mi Pacto con ustedes; ^2:2con tal que ustedes no hagáis alianza con los moradores de esta tierra, cuyos altares habéis de derribar’; pero ustedes no habéis obedecido a mi voz. ¿Por qué habéis hecho esto? ^2:3Por tanto yo también dije, ‘No los echaré de delante de ustedes, sino que serán como espinas en vuestros costados, y sus dioses os serán por tropiezo’”. ^2:4Y aconteció que cuando el Ángel de Jehová habló estas palabras a todos los hijos de Israel, el pueblo lloró en alta voz. ^2:5Y llamaron por nombre aquel lugar Boquim; y ofrecieron allí sacrificios a Jehová.

§El complemento   Cuerpo: Jehová levantó arriba juez tras juez para liberó a la gente desde sus enemigos, pero la gente siguió volviendo a la idolatría (2:6 - 4:24)

¶Lo opuesto   La gente volvió a la idolatría después de la muerte de Josué y su generación, lo que enfureció a Jehová (2:6 - 15)

^2:6Porque ya Josué había despedido al pueblo, y los hijos de Israel se habían ido cada uno a su heredad para poseerla. ^2:7Y el pueblo había servido a Jehová todo el tiempo de Josué, y todo el tiempo de los ancianos que vivieron largos días después de Josué, los cuales habían visto todas las grandes obras de Jehová, que él había hecho por Israel.

^2:8Y murió Josué hijo de Nun, siervo de Jehová, siendo de ciento diez años. ^2:9Y lo enterraron en el término de su heredad en Timnat-sera, en el monte de Efraín, al norte del monte de Gaas.

^2:10Y toda aquella generación fue también recogida con sus padres.

Y se levantó después de ellos otra generación, que no conocía a Jehová, ni la obra que él había hecho por Israel. ^2:11Y los hijos de Israel hicieron lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, y sirvieron a los Baales. ^2:12Y dejaron a Jehová el Dios de sus padres, que los había sacado de la tierra de Egipto, y se fueron tras otros dioses, los dioses de los pueblos que estaban en sus alrededores, a los cuales adoraron; y provocaron a ira a Jehová. ^2:13Y dejaron a Jehová, y adoraron a Baal y a Astarot.

^2:14Y el furor de Jehová se encendió contra Israel, el cual los entregó en manos de robadores que los saquearon, y los vendió en manos de sus enemigos de alrededor; y ya no pudieron estar de pie delante de sus enemigos. ^2:15Por dondequiera que salían, la mano de Jehová era contra ellos para mal, como Jehová había dicho, y como Jehová se lo había jurado; así los afligió en gran manera.

¶Lo opuesto   La gente no escucharía a sus jueces, por lo que Jehová dejó a las naciones gentiles en la tierra para probar su lealtad a él (2:16 - 3:4)

^2:16Pero Jehová levantó jueces que los librasen de mano de los que los saqueaban. ^2:17Y tampoco oyeron a sus jueces, sino que fornicaron tras dioses ajenos, a los cuales adoraron; se apartaron pronto del camino en que anduvieron sus padres obedeciendo a los Mandamientos de Jehová; pero ellos no hicieron así.

^2:18Y cuando Jehová les levantaba jueces, Jehová era con el juez, y los libraba de mano de los enemigos todo el tiempo de aquel juez: porque Jehová se arrepentía por sus gemidos a causa de los que los oprimían y afligían. ^2:19Pero acontecía que al morir el juez, volvían atrás y se corrompían aun más que sus padres, siguiendo dioses ajenos para servirles, e inclinándose delante de ellos; y no desistían de sus obras, ni de su obstinado camino.

^2:20Y la ira de Jehová se encendió contra Israel, y dijo, “Por cuanto esta gente traspasa mi Pacto que ordené a sus padres, y no obedecen mi voz, ^2:21tampoco yo echaré más de delante de ellos a ninguna de estas naciones que dejó Josué cuando murió; ^2:22para que por ellas probara yo a Israel, si guardarían o no el camino de Jehová andando por él, como sus padres lo guardaron”. ^2:23Por esto dejó Jehová aquellas naciones, y no las desarraigó luego, ni las entregó en mano de Josué.

^3:1Éstas, pues, son las naciones que dejó Jehová para probar con ellas a Israel, a todos aquellos que no habían conocido todas las guerras de Canaán; ^3:2para que al menos el linaje de los hijos de Israel conociese, para enseñarlos en la guerra, al menos a los que antes no la habían conocido. ^3:3Cinco príncipes de los filisteos, y todos los cananeos, y los sidonios, y los heveos que habitaban en el monte Líbano; desde el monte de Baal-hermón hasta llegar a Hamat.

^3:4Éstos, pues, fueron para probar por ellos a Israel, para saber si obedecerían a los Mandamientos de Jehová, que él había prescrito a sus padres por mano de Moisés.

¶El complemento   Otoniel hijo de Kenaz liberó a Israel desde el rey de Mesopotamia (3:5 - 11)

^3:5Así los hijos de Israel habitaban entre los cananeos, heteos, amorreos, ferezeos, heveos, y jebuseos. ^3:6Y tomaron de sus hijas por esposas, y dieron sus hijas a los hijos de ellos, y sirvieron a sus dioses. ^3:7Hicieron, pues, los hijos de Israel lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, y olvidaron a Jehová su Dios, y sirvieron a los Baales, y a las imágenes de Asera.

^3:8Y la ira de Jehová se encendió contra Israel, y los vendió en manos de Cusan-risataim rey de Mesopotamia; y sirvieron los hijos de Israel a Cusan-risataim ocho años.

^3:9Y cuando los hijos de Israel clamaron a Jehová; Jehová levantó un libertador a los hijos de Israel y los libró; esto es, a Otoniel hijo de Cenaz, hermano menor de Caleb. ^3:10Y el Espíritu de Jehová fue sobre él, y juzgó a Israel, y salió a batalla, y Jehová entregó en su mano a Cusan-risataim, rey de Mesopotamia, y prevaleció su mano contra Cusan-risataim.

^3:11Y reposó la tierra cuarenta años;

y murió Otoniel, hijo de Cenaz.

¶El complemento   Ehud el hijo de Gera liberó a Israel de los moabitas (3:12 - 30)

^3:12Y los hijos de Israel volvieron a hacer lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová; y Jehová esforzó a Eglón rey de Moab contra Israel, por cuanto habían hecho lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová. ^3:13Y juntó consigo a los hijos de Amón y de Amalec, y fue, e hirió a Israel, y tomó la ciudad de las palmas. ^3:14Y los hijos de Israel sirvieron a Eglón rey de los moabitas dieciocho años.

^3:15Y los hijos de Israel clamaron a Jehová; y Jehová les levantó un libertador, a Aod, hijo de Gera, benjamita, el cual era zurdo. Y los hijos de Israel enviaron con él un presente a Eglón rey de Moab. ^3:16Y Aod se había hecho un puñal de dos filos, de un codo de largo; y se lo ciñó debajo de sus ropas sobre su muslo derecho. ^3:17Y trajo el presente a Eglón rey de Moab; y Eglón era un hombre muy obeso. ^3:18Y luego que hubo entregado el presente, despidió a la gente que lo había traído. ^3:19Pero él se volvió desde los ídolos que estaban en Gilgal, y dijo, “Rey, una palabra secreta tengo que decirte”. Él entonces dijo, “Calla”. Y salieron de delante de él todos los que con él estaban. ^3:20Y se acercó Aod a él, el cual estaba sentado solo en una sala de verano. Y Aod dijo, “Tengo palabra de Dios para ti”. Él entonces se levantó de su silla. ^3:21Pero Aod metió su mano izquierda, y tomó el puñal de su lado derecho, y se lo metió por el vientre; ^3:22y la empuñadura también entró tras la hoja, y la grosura encerró la hoja, que él no sacó el puñal de su vientre; y salió el estiércol. ^3:23Y saliendo Aod al patio, cerró tras sí las puertas de la sala y les puso el cerrojo. ^3:24Y salido él, vinieron sus siervos, los cuales viendo las puertas de la sala cerradas, dijeron, “Sin duda él cubre sus pies en la sala de verano”. ^3:25Y habiendo esperado hasta estar confusos, pues que él no abría las puertas de la sala, tomaron la llave y abrieron; y he aquí su señor caído en tierra, muerto. ^3:26Pero entre tanto que ellos se detuvieron, Aod se escapó, y pasando los ídolos, escapó a Seirat.

^3:27Y aconteció que cuando hubo entrado, tocó la trompeta en el monte de Efraín, y los hijos de Israel descendieron con él del monte, y él iba delante de ellos. ^3:28Entonces él les dijo, “Seguidme: porque Jehová ha entregado vuestros enemigos los moabitas en vuestras manos”. Y descendieron en pos de él, y tomaron los vados del Jordán a Moab, y no dejaron pasar a ninguno. ^3:29Y en aquel tiempo hirieron de los moabitas como a diez mil hombres, todos valientes y todos hombres de guerra; no escapó hombre. ^3:30Así quedó Moab sojuzgado aquel día bajo la mano de Israel.

Y reposó la tierra ochenta años.

^3:31Después de éste fue Samgar hijo de Anat, el cual hirió seiscientos hombres de los filisteos con una aguijada de bueyes; y él también libró a Israel.

¶Único   Barac, hijo de Abinoam, liberó a Israel desde Jabín, rey de Jasor, con el apoyo de Débora, profetisa (4:1 - 24)

^4:1Y después de la muerte de Aod, los hijos de Israel volvieron a hacer lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová. ^4:2Y Jehová los vendió en mano de Jabín rey de Canaán, el cual reinó en Hazor; y el capitán de su ejército se llamaba Sísara, y él habitaba en Haroset de los gentiles. ^4:3Y los hijos de Israel clamaron a Jehová: porque aquél tenía novecientos carros herrados; y había afligido en gran manera a los hijos de Israel por veinte años.

^4:4Y gobernaba en aquel tiempo a Israel una mujer, Débora, profetisa, esposa de Lapidot. ^4:5Y ella se sentaba bajo la palmera de Débora, entre Ramá y Betel, en el monte de Efraín; y los hijos de Israel subían a ella a juicio. ^4:6Y ella envió a llamar a Barac hijo de Abinoam, de Cedes de Neftalí, y le dijo, “¿No te ha mandado Jehová Dios de Israel, diciendo, ‘Ve, y retírate hasta el monte de Tabor, y toma contigo diez mil hombres de los hijos de Neftalí, y de los hijos de Zabulón; ^4:7y yo atraeré a ti al arroyo de Cisón a Sísara, capitán del ejército de Jabín, con sus carros y su ejército, y lo entregaré en tus manos?’” ^4:8Y Barac le respondió, “Si tú vas conmigo, yo iré; pero si no vas conmigo, no iré”. ^4:9Y ella dijo, “Iré contigo; pero no será tu honra en el camino que vas: porque en mano de mujer venderá Jehová a Sísara”. Y levantándose Débora fue con Barac a Cedes. ^4:10Y juntó Barac a Zabulón y a Neftalí en Cedes, y subió con diez mil hombres a su mando, y Débora subió con él.

^4:11Y Heber cineo, de los hijos de Hobab suegro de Moisés, se había apartado de los cineos, y puesto su tienda hasta el valle de Zaananim, que está junto a Cedes. ^4:12Vinieron pues, las nuevas a Sísara como Barac hijo de Abinoam había subido al monte de Tabor. ^4:13Y reunió Sísara todos sus carros, novecientos carros herrados, con todo el pueblo que con él estaba, desde Haroset de los gentiles hasta el arroyo de Cisón. ^4:14Entonces Débora dijo a Barac, “Levántate: porque éste es el día en que Jehová ha entregado a Sísara en tus manos. ¿No ha salido Jehová delante de ti?”. Y Barac descendió del monte de Tabor, y diez mil hombres en pos de él. ^4:15Y Jehová desbarató a Sísara, y a todos sus carros y a todo su ejército, a filo de espada delante de Barac; y Sísara descendió del carro, y huyó a pie. ^4:16Pero Barac siguió los carros y el ejército hasta Haroset de los gentiles, y todo el ejército de Sísara cayó a filo de espada hasta no quedar ni uno.

^4:17Y Sísara huyó a pie a la tienda de Jael, esposa de Heber cineo: porque había paz entre Jabín, rey de Hazor, y la casa de Heber el cineo. ^4:18Y saliendo Jael a recibir a Sísara, le dijo, “Ven, señor mío, ven a mí, no tengas temor”. Y él vino a ella a la tienda, y ella le cubrió con una manta. ^4:19Y él le dijo, “Te ruego me des a beber un poco de agua, pues tengo sed”. Y ella abrió un odre de leche y le dio de beber, y le volvió a cubrir. ^4:20Y él le dijo, “Estate a la puerta de la tienda, y si alguien viniere, y te preguntare, diciendo, ‘¿Hay aquí alguno?’ Tú responderás que, ‘No’”. ^4:21Y Jael, esposa de Heber, tomó una estaca de la tienda, y poniendo un mazo en su mano, vino a él calladamente, y le metió la estaca por las sienes, y lo enclavó en la tierra, pues él estaba cargado de sueño y cansado; y así murió. ^4:22Y siguiendo Barac a Sísara, Jael salió a recibirlo, y le dijo, “Ven, y te mostraré al varón que tú buscas”. Y él entró con ella, y he aquí Sísara yacía muerto con la estaca en la sien.

^4:23Así abatió Dios aquel día a Jabín, rey de Canaán, delante de los hijos de Israel. ^4:24Y la mano de los hijos de Israel prosperó y prevaleció contra Jabín rey de Canaán; hasta que destruyeron a Jabín, rey de Canaán.

§El complemento   Conclusión: Deborah y Barak cantaron alabanzas a Jehová (5:1 - 31a)

¶El complemento   Débora y Barac le cantaron a Jehová sobre ellos mismos y las tribus (5:1 - 18)

^5:1Y aquel día cantó Débora, con Barac, hijo de Abinoam, diciendo, ^5:2“Porque ha vengado las injurias de Israel: porque el pueblo se ha ofrecido voluntariamente, load a Jehová. ^5:3Oíd, oh reyes; escuchad, oh príncipes; yo cantaré a Jehová, cantaré salmos a Jehová Dios de Israel.

^5:4“Cuando saliste de Seir, oh Jehová, cuando te apartaste del campo de Edom, la tierra tembló, y los cielos destilaron, y las nubes gotearon aguas. ^5:5Los montes se derritieron delante de Jehová, aun aquel Sinaí, delante de Jehová Dios de Israel”.

^5:6“En los días de Samgar hijo de Anat, en los días de Jael, cesaron los caminos, y los que andaban por las sendas se apartaban por senderos torcidos. ^5:7Los aldeanos cesaron en Israel, decayeron; hasta que yo Débora me levanté, me levanté como madre en Israel. ^5:8Escogieron nuevos dioses, la guerra estaba a las puertas. ¿Se veía escudo o lanza entre cuarenta mil en Israel? ^5:9Mi corazón es para los príncipes de Israel, los que se ofrecieron voluntariamente entre el pueblo. ¡Bendecid a Jehová!

^5:10“Ustedes los que cabalgáis en asnas blancas, los que presidís en juicio, y ustedes los que viajáis, hablad. ^5:11Lejos del ruido de los arqueros, en los abrevaderos, allí repetirán los hechos justos de Jehová, los hechos justos para con los habitantes de sus aldeas en Israel; entonces descenderá el pueblo de Jehová a las puertas.

^5:12“Despierta, despierta, Débora; despierta, despierta, profiere un cántico. Levántate, Barac, y lleva tus cautivos, hijo de Abinoam. ^5:13Entonces ha hecho que el que quedó del pueblo, señoree sobre los nobles; Jehová me hizo señorear sobre los poderosos. ^5:14De Efraín salió su raíz contra Amalec, tras ti, Benjamín, con tus pueblos; de Maquir descendieron príncipes, y de Zabulón los que solían manejar punzón de escribiente. ^5:15Príncipes también de Isacar fueron con Débora; y como Isacar, también Barac fue enviado a pie por el valle. Por las divisiones de Rubén hubo grandes impresiones del corazón. ^5:16¿Por qué te quedaste entre los apriscos, para oír los balidos de los rebaños? Por las divisiones de Rubén grandes fueron las reflexiones del corazón. ^5:17Galaad se quedó al otro lado del Jordán; y Dan ¿por qué se estuvo junto a los navíos? Se mantuvo Aser a la ribera del mar, y se quedó en sus puertos. ^5:18El pueblo de Zabulón expuso su vida a la muerte, y Neftalí en las alturas del campo”.

¶El complemento   Débora y Barac celebraron la victoria de Jael, la esposa de Heber el Kenite, sobre Sísara (5:19 - 31a)

^5:19“Vinieron reyes y pelearon; entonces pelearon los reyes de Canaán en Taanac, junto a las aguas de Meguido, pero no llevaron ganancia alguna de dinero. ^5:20De los cielos pelearon; las estrellas desde sus órbitas pelearon contra Sísara. ^5:21Los barrió el torrente de Cisón, el antiguo torrente, el torrente de Cisón; hollaste, oh alma mía, con fortaleza. ^5:22Se rompieron entonces los cascos de los caballos por el galopar, por el galopar de sus valientes.

^5:23“‘Maldecid a Meroz,’ dijo el ángel de Jehová, ‘Maldecid severamente a sus moradores: porque no vinieron al socorro de Jehová, al socorro de Jehová contra los fuertes’”.

^5:24“Bendita sea entre las mujeres Jael, esposa de Heber el cineo; sobre las mujeres bendita sea en la tienda. ^5:25Él pidió agua, y ella le dio leche; en tazón de nobles le presentó nata. ^5:26Con su mano tomó la estaca, y con su diestra el mazo de trabajadores; y golpeó a Sísara, hirió su cabeza, horadó y atravesó sus sienes. ^5:27Cayó encorvado entre sus pies, quedó tendido; entre sus pies cayó encorvado; donde se encorvó, allí cayó muerto.

^5:28“La madre de Sísara se asoma a la ventana, y por entre las celosías a voces dice, ‘¿Por qué tarda su carro en venir? ¿Por qué se demoran las ruedas de sus carros?’ ^5:29Las más avisadas de sus damas le respondían (y aun ella se respondía a sí misma), ^5:30‘¿Acaso no han hallado despojo, y lo están repartiendo? A cada uno una doncella, o dos; las prendas de colores para Sísara, las prendas bordadas de colores; la ropa de color bordada de ambos lados, para los cuellos de los que han tomado el despojo’.

^5:31“Así perezcan todos tus enemigos, oh Jehová; pero los que te aman, sean como el sol cuando sale en su fuerza”.
