Joshua & Judges, Chapter 1.3: The senior tribes of Israel received their inheritance (13:1 - 17:18)

Introduction: The tribes west of Jordan had not yet taken their inheritances (13:1 - 33)

^13:1Now Joshua was old and advanced in years; and Jehovah said to him, “You are old and advanced in years; and there remains very much land yet to be possessed.

^13:2“This is the land that still remains: all the borders of the Philistines, and all Geshuri, ^13:3from Sihor, which is before Egypt, even to the borders of Ekron northward, which is counted to the Canaanite; five lords of the Philistines: the Gazathites, the Ashdothites, the Eshkalonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites, also the Avites; ^13:4from the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that is beside the Sidonians, to Aphek, to the borders of the Amorites; ^13:5and the land of the Giblites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrise, from Baal-gad under mount Hermon to the entering in to Hamath. ^13:6All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth-maim, and all the Sidonians, them will I drive out from before the children of Israel; only divide it by lot to the Israelites for an inheritance, as I have commanded you.

^13:7“Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes, and the half tribe of Manasseh; ^13:8with whom the Reubenites and the Gadites have received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond Jordan eastward, even as Moses the servant of Jehovah gave them: ^13:9from Aroer, that is upon the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the river, and all the plain of Medeba to Dibon; ^13:10and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, which reigned in Heshbon, to the border of the children of Ammon; ^13:11and Gilead, and the border of the Geshurites and Maachathites, and all mount Hermon, and all Bashan to Salcah; ^13:12all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, which reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei, who remained of the remnant of the Giants: for these did Moses smite, and cast them out.”

^13:13Nevertheless the children of Israel did not expel the Geshurites, nor the Maachathites; but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites until this day.

^13:14Only he gave no inheritance to the tribe of Levi: the sacrifices of Jehovah God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, as he said to them.

^13:15And Moses gave to the tribe of the children of Reuben inheritance according to their families. ^13:16And their territory was from Aroer, that is on the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the river, and all the plain by Medeba; ^13:17Heshbon, and all her cities that are in the plain; also Dibon, Bamoth-baal, Beth-baal-meon, ^13:18Jahaza, Kedemoth, Mephaath, ^13:19Kirjathaim, Sibmah, Zareth-shahar in the mount of the valley, ^13:20Beth-peor, Ashdoth-pisgah, Beth-jeshimoth, ^13:21and all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, which reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses smote with the princes of Midian: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, which were Dukes of Sihon, dwelling in the country. ^13:22Balaam also the son of Beor, the soothsayer, did the children of Israel slay with the sword among them that were slain by them. ^13:23And the border of the children of Reuben was Jordan, and its border. This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben after their families, the cities and their villages.

^13:24And Moses gave inheritance to the tribe of Gad, even to the children of Gad according to their families; ^13:25and their territory was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the children of Ammon, to Aroer that is before Rabbah; ^13:26and from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh, and Betonim; and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir; ^13:27and in the valley, Beth-aram, and Beth-nimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, Jordan and his border, even to the edge of the sea of Chinnereth on the other side of Jordan eastward. ^13:28This was the inheritance of the children of Gad: after their families, the cities, and their villages.

^13:29And Moses gave inheritance to the half tribe of Manasseh; and this was the possession of the half tribe of the children of Manasseh by their families: ^13:30and their territory was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities; ^13:31and half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were pertaining to the children of Machir the son of Manasseh, even to the one half of the children of Machir by their families.

^13:32These were the territories which Moses distributed for inheritance in the plains of Moab, on the other side of Jordan, by Jericho, eastward.

^13:33But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance. Jehovah God of Israel was their inheritance, as he said to them.

^14:1And these are the territories which the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, distributed for inheritance to them.

^14:2By lot was their inheritance, as Jehovah commanded by the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes, and for the half tribe.

^14:3For Moses had given the inheritance of two tribes and a half tribe on the other side of Jordan; but he gave no inheritance to the Levites among them.

^14:4For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim; therefore they gave no part to the Levites in the land, except cities to dwell in, with their suburbs for their cattle and for their substance.

^14:5As Jehovah commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did; and they divided the land.

¶Complement   Joshua gave Hebron to Caleb as his inheritance (14:6 - 15:12)

^14:6Then the children of Judah came to Joshua in Gilgal. And Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said to him, “You know the thing that Jehovah said to Moses the man of God concerning you and I in Kadesh-barnea. ^14:7I was forty years old when Moses the servant of Jehovah sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in my heart. ^14:8Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt. But I wholly followed Jehovah my God. ^14:9And Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘Surely the land that your feet have walked upon shall be your inheritance, and your children's forever, because you have wholly followed Jehovah my God.’

^14:10“And now, behold, Jehovah has kept me alive, as he said, these forty-five years, even since Jehovah spoke this word to Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness. And now, lo, I am this day eighty-five years old. ^14:11As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me; as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in. ^14:12Now therefore give me this mountain, of which Jehovah spoke in that day. For you heard in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fortified. If so be Jehovah will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as Jehovah said.”

^14:13And Joshua blessed him, and gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh Hebron for an inheritance. ^14:14Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite until this day, because he wholly followed Jehovah God of Israel. ^14:15Now the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-arba; and this Arba was a great man among the Anakims.

And the land rested from war.

^15:1This then was the lot of the tribe of the children of Judah by their families; even to the border of Edom the wilderness of Zin southward was the uttermost part of the south border. ^15:2And their south border was from the shore of the salt sea, from the bay that looks southward; ^15:3and it went out to the south side to Maaleh-acrabbim, and passed along to Zin, and ascended up on the south side to Kadesh-barnea, and passed along to Hezron, and went up to Adar, and made a circle to Karkaa; ^15:4from there it passed toward Azmon, and went out to the river of Egypt; and the goings out of that border were at the sea: this shall be your south border. ^15:5And the east border was the salt sea, even to the end of Jordan. And their border in the north side was from the bay of the sea at the uttermost part of Jordan; ^15:6and the border went up to Beth-hogla, and passed along by the north of Beth-arabah; and the border went up to the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben; ^15:7and the border went up toward Debir from the valley of Achor, and so northward, looking toward Gilgal, that is before the going up to Adummim, which is on the south side of the river; and the border passed toward the water of En-shemesh, and outgoings of it were at En-rogel. ^15:8And the border went up by the valley of the son of Hinnom to the south side of the Jebusite (the same is Jerusalem); and the border went up to the top of the mountain that lies before the valley of Hinnom westward, which is at the end of the valley of the giants northward. ^15:9And the border was drawn from the top of the hill to the fountain of the water of Nephtoah, and went out to the cities of mount Ephron; and the border was drawn to Baalah (which is Kirjath-jearim); ^15:10and the border circled from Baalah westward to mount Seir, and passed along to the side of mount Jearim (which is Chesalon), on the north side, and went down to Beth-shemesh, and passed on to Timnah; ^15:11and the border went out to the side of Ekron northward; and the border was drawn to Shicron, and passed along to mount Baalah, and went out to Jabneel; and the goings out of the border were at the sea. ^15:12And the west border was to the great sea, and its territory. This is the territory of the children of Judah round about according to their families.

¶Complement   Caleb and his family took Hebron as his inheritance by war (15:13 - 63)

^15:13And to Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a part among the children of Judah, according to the Commandment of Jehovah to Joshua, even the city of Arba the father of Anak, which city is Hebron. ^15:14And Caleb drove the three sons of Anak from there: which were Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anak.

^15:15And he went up from there to the inhabitants of Debir; and the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher. ^15:16And Caleb said, “He that smites Kirjath-sepher, and takes it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to be his wife.” ^15:17And Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it; and he gave him Achsah his daughter to be his wife.

^15:18And it came to pass, as she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field; and she dismounted from her donkey; and Caleb said to her, “What do you want?” ^15:19Who answered, “Give me a blessing: for you have given me a south land; give me also springs of water.” And he gave her the upper springs, and the lower springs.

^15:20This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Judah according to their families. ^15:21And the uttermost cities of the tribe of the children of Judah toward the border of Edom southward were Kabzeel, Eder, Jagur, ^15:22Kinah, Dimonah, Adadah, ^15:23Kedesh, Hazor, Ithnan, ^15:24Ziph, Telem, Bealoth, ^15:25Hazor, Hadattah, Kerioth, Hezron (which is Hazor), ^15:26Amam, Shema, Moladah, ^15:27Hazar-gaddah, Heshmon, Beth-palet, ^15:28Hazar-shual, Beer-sheba, Bizjothjah, ^15:29Baalah, Iim, Azem, ^15:30Eltolad, Chesil, Hormah, ^15:31Ziklag, Madmannah, Sansannah, ^15:32Lebaoth, Shilhim, Ain, and Rimmon: all the cities are twenty-nine, with their villages. ^15:33And in the valley were Eshtaol, Zoreah, Ashnah, ^15:34Zanoah, En-gannim, Tappuah, Enam, ^15:35Jarmuth, Adullam, Socoh, Azekah, ^15:36Sharaim, Adithaim, Gederah, and Gederothaim: fourteen cities with their villages; ^15:37Zenan, Hadashah, Migdal-gad, ^15:38Dilean, Mizpeh, Joktheel, ^15:39Lachish, Bozkath, Eglon, ^15:40Cabbon, Lahmam, Kithlish, ^15:41Gederoth, Beth-dagon, Naamah, and Makkedah: sixteen cities with their villages; ^15:42Libnah, Ether, Ashan, ^15:43Jiphtah, Ashnah, Nezib, ^15:44Keilah, Achzib, and Mareshah: nine cities with their villages; ^15:45Ekron, with her towns and her villages, ^15:46from Ekron even to the sea, all that lay near Ashdod, with their villages; ^15:47Ashdod with her towns and her villages, Gaza with her towns and her villages, to the river of Egypt, and the great sea, and its border. ^15:48And in the mountains were Shamir, Jattir, Socoh, ^15:49Dannah, Kirjath-sannah (which is Debir), ^15:50Anab, Eshtemoh, Anim, ^15:51Goshen, Holon, and Giloh: eleven cities with their villages; ^15:52Arab, Dumah, Eshean, ^15:53Janum, Beth-tappuah, Aphekah, ^15:54Humtah, Kirjath-arba (which is Hebron), and Zior: nine cities with their villages; ^15:55Maon, Carmel, Ziph, Juttah, ^15:56Jezreel, Jokdeam, Zanoah, ^15:57Cain, Gibeah, and Timnah: ten cities with their villages; ^15:58Halhul, Beth-zur, Gedor, ^15:59Maarath, Beth-anoth, and Eltekon: six cities with their villages; ^15:60Kirjath-baal (which is Kirjath-jearim), and Rabbah: two cities with their villages. ^15:61In the wilderness were Beth-arabah, Middin, Secacah, ^15:62Nibshan, the city of salt, and En-gedi: six cities with their villages.

^15:63As for the Jebusites the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive them out; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem until this day.

¶Opposite   The inheritance of the children of Ephraim in the Promised Land (16:1 - 10)

^16:1And the lot of the children of Joseph fell from Jordan by Jericho, to the water of Jericho on the east, to the wilderness that goes up from Jericho throughout mount Bethel; ^16:2and goes out from Bethel to Luz, and passes along to the borders of Archi to Ataroth, ^16:3and goes down westward to the border of Japhleti, to the border of Beth-horon the lower, and to Gezer; and outgoings of it are at the sea.

^16:4So the children of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, took their inheritance; ^16:5and the border of the children of Ephraim according to their families was this: even the border of their inheritance on the east side was Ataroth-addar, to Beth-horon the upper; ^16:6and the border went out toward the sea to Michmethah on the north side; and the border went about eastward to Taanath-shiloh, and passed by it on the east to Janohah; ^16:7and it went down from Janohah to Ataroth, and to Naarath, and came to Jericho, and went out at Jordan. ^16:8The border went out from Tappuah westward to the river Kanah; and outgoings of it were at the sea.

This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Ephraim by their families.

^16:9And the separate cities for the children of Ephraim were among the inheritance of the children of Manasseh, all the cities with their villages.

^16:10And they did not drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwell among the Ephraimites until this day, and serve under tribute.

¶Opposite   The inheritance of the daughters of Zelophehad in the tribe of Manasseh in the Promised Land (17:1 - 4)

^17:1There was also a lot for the tribe of Manasseh: for he was the firstborn of Joseph (that is to say, for Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead). Because he was a man of war, therefore he had Gilead and Bashan.

^17:2There was also a lot for the rest of the children of Manasseh by their families: for the children of Abiezer, and for the children of Helek, and for the children of Asriel, and for the children of Shechem, and for the children of Hepher, and for the children of Shemida: these were the male children of Manasseh the son of Joseph by their families.

^17:2But Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but daughters. And these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

^17:4And they came near before Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the princes, saying, “Jehovah commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brethren.”

Therefore according to the Commandment of Jehovah he gave them an inheritance among the brethren of their father.

§Complement   Conclusion: The inheritance of the children of Joseph (17:5 - 18)

¶Complement   The inheritance of the half tribe of Manasseh on the western side of Jordan in the Promised Land (17:5 - 11)

^17:5And there fell ten portions to Manasseh, beside the land of Gilead and Bashan, which were on the other side of Jordan, ^17:6because the daughters of Manasseh had an inheritance among his sons; and the rest of Manasseh's sons had the land of Gilead.

^17:7And the territory of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethah, that lies before Shechem; and the border went along on the right hand to the inhabitants of En-tappuah.

^17:8Now Manasseh had the land of Tappuah.

But the city of Tappuah on the border of Manasseh belonged to the children of Ephraim; ^17:9and the border descended to the river Kanah, southward of the river. These cities of Ephraim are among the cities of Manasseh; the border of Manasseh also was on the north side of the river, and the outgoings of it were at the sea. ^17:10Southward it was Ephraim's, and northward it was Manasseh's, and the sea is his border; and they met together in Asher on the north, and in Issachar on the east.

^17:11And Manasseh had in Issachar and in Asher Beth-shean and her towns, and Ibleam and her towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, and the inhabitants of Endor and her towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and her towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: even three countries.

¶Complement   Joshua encouraged the children of Joseph to take their inheritance by force (17:12 - 18)

^17:12Yet the children of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

^17:13Yet it came to pass, when the children of Israel became strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute; but did not utterly drive them out.

^17:14And the children of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, “Why have you given me but one lot and one portion to inherit, seeing I am a great people, forasmuch as Jehovah has blessed me until now?” ^17:15And Joshua answered them, “If you are a great people, then go up to the wood country; and cut down for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the giants, if mount Ephraim is too confined for you.”

^17:16And the children of Joseph said, “The hill is not enough for us; and all the Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both they who are of Beth-shean and her towns, and they who are of the valley of Jezreel.” ^17:17And Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, “You are a great people; and have great power; you shall not have only one lot; ^17:18but the mountain shall be yours: for it is a forest, and you shall cut it down.

“And the outgoings of it shall be yours: for you shall drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots, and though they are strong.”

^13:15Y Moisés dio heredad a la tribu de los hijos de Rubén conforme a sus familias. ^13:16Y fue el territorio de ellos desde Aroer, que está a la orilla del arroyo de Arnón, y la ciudad que está en medio del valle, y toda la llanura hasta Medeba; ^13:17Hesbón, con todas sus ciudades que están en la llanura; Dibón, y Bamot-baal, y Bet-baal-meón, ^13:18y Jahaza, y Cademot, y Mefaat, ^13:19y Quiriataim, y Sibma, y Zeretsahar en el monte del valle, ^13:20y Bet-peor, y Asdot-pisga y Bet-jesimot, ^13:21y todas las ciudades de la llanura, y todo el reino de Sehón rey de los amorreos, que reinó en Hesbón, al cual hirió Moisés, y a los príncipes de Madián, Hevi, Requem, Zur, Hur y Reba, príncipes de Sehón que habitaban en aquella tierra. ^13:22También mataron a espada los hijos de Israel a Balaam el adivino, hijo de Beor, con los demás que mataron. ^13:23Y el Jordán fue el término de los hijos de Rubén con su frontera. Ésta fue la heredad de los hijos de Rubén conforme a sus familias, estas ciudades con sus aldeas.

^13:24Asimismo Moisés dio heredad a la tribu de Gad, a los hijos de Gad, conforme a sus familias. ^13:25Y el término de ellos fue Jazer, y todas las ciudades de Galaad, y la mitad de la tierra de los hijos de Amón hasta Aroer, que está delante de Rabá. ^13:26Y desde Hesbón hasta Ramat-mispe, y Betonim; y desde Mahanaim hasta el término de Debir; ^13:27y el valle de Bet-aram, y Bet-nimra, y Sucot, y Safón, resto del reino de Sehón, rey de Hesbón; el Jordán y su término hasta el cabo del mar de Cineret al otro lado del Jordán, al oriente. ^13:28Ésta es la heredad de los hijos de Gad, por sus familias, estas ciudades con sus aldeas.

^13:29También dio Moisés heredad a la media tribu de Manasés; y fue de la media tribu de los hijos de Manasés, conforme a sus familias. ^13:30El término de ellos fue desde Mahanaim, todo Basán, todo el reino de Og rey de Basán, y todas las aldeas de Jair que están en Basán, sesenta poblaciones. ^13:31Y la mitad de Galaad, y Astarot, y Edrei, ciudades del reino de Og en Basán, fueron para los hijos de Maquir, hijo de Manasés, para la mitad de los hijos de Maquir conforme a sus familias.

^13:32Éstos son los territorios que Moisés repartió en heredad en los llanos de Moab, del otro lado del Jordán de Jericó, al oriente.

^13:33Pero Moisés no dio heredad a la tribu de Leví; Jehová Dios de Israel fue la heredad de ellos como él les había dicho.

§El complemento   Cuerpo: Caleb y los hijos de Judá toman su herencia por la fuerza en la Tierra Prometida (14:1 - 17:4)

¶Único   Los hijos de Israel dividieron la tierra en el lado occidental de Jordania (14:1 - 5)

^14:1Éstos, pues, son los territorios que los hijos de Israel tomaron por heredad en la tierra de Canaán, lo cual les repartieron Eleazar sacerdote, y Josué hijo de Nun, y los principales de los padres de las tribus de los hijos de Israel.

^14:2Por suerte se les dio su heredad, como Jehová lo había mandado por Moisés, que diese a las nueve tribus y a la media tribu.

^14:3Porque a las dos tribus, y a la media tribu, Moisés les había dado heredad al otro lado del Jordán; pero a los levitas no dio heredad entre ellos.

^14:4Porque los hijos de José fueron dos tribus, Manasés y Efraín; y no dieron parte a los levitas en la tierra, sino ciudades en que morasen, con sus ejidos para sus ganados y rebaños.

^14:5De la manera que Jehová lo había mandado a Moisés, así lo hicieron los hijos de Israel en la repartición de la tierra.

¶El complemento   Josué le dio Hebrón a Caleb como su herencia (14:6 - 15:12)

^14:6Y los hijos de Judá vinieron a Josué en Gilgal. Y Caleb, hijo de Jefone cenezeo, le dijo, “Tú sabes lo que Jehová dijo a Moisés, varón de Dios, en Cades-barnea, tocante a mí y a ti. ^14:7Yo tenía cuarenta años de edad cuando Moisés, siervo de Jehová, me envió de Cades-barnea a reconocer la tierra; y yo le referí el asunto como lo tenía en mi corazón. ^14:8Pero mis hermanos, los que habían subido conmigo, menguaron el corazón del pueblo; pero yo cumplí siguiendo a Jehová mi Dios. ^14:9Y Moisés juró, diciendo, ‘Ciertamente la tierra que holló tu pie será para ti, y para tus hijos en herencia perpetua, por cuanto cumpliste siguiendo a Jehová mi Dios’.

^14:10“Ahora bien, Jehová me ha hecho vivir, como él dijo, estos cuarenta y cinco años, desde el tiempo que Jehová habló estas palabras a Moisés, cuando Israel andaba por el desierto; y ahora, he aquí, hoy día soy de ochenta y cinco años; ^14:11pero aún hoy estoy tan fuerte como el día que Moisés me envió; cual era entonces mi fuerza, tal es ahora, para la guerra, y para salir y para entrar. ^14:12Dame, pues, ahora esta montaña, de la cual habló Jehová aquel día: porque tú oíste en aquel día que los Anaceos están allí, y que las ciudades son grandes y fortificadas. Quizá Jehová será conmigo, y los echaré como Jehová ha dicho”.

^14:13Josué entonces le bendijo, y dio a Caleb hijo de Jefone a Hebrón por heredad. ^14:14Por tanto, Hebrón fue de Caleb, hijo de Jefone cenezeo, en heredad hasta hoy: porque siguió cumplidamente a Jehová Dios de Israel. ^14:15Ahora el nombre de Hebron antes era Quiriat-arba; y este Arba fue un gran hombre entre los Anaceos.

Y la tierra tuvo reposo de las guerras.

^15:1Y la parte que tocó en suerte a la tribu de los hijos de Judá, por sus familias; se extendía hasta el término de Edom en el desierto de Zin hacia el sur, éste era el extremo sur. ^15:2Y su frontera sur era desde la costa del Mar Salado, desde la bahía que mira hacia el sur; ^15:3y salía hacia el sur de la subida de Acrabim, pasando hasta Zin; y subiendo por el sur hasta Cades-barnea, pasaba a Hezrón, y subiendo por Adar daba vuelta a Carca. ^15:4De allí pasaba a Asmón, y salía al arroyo de Egipto; y sale este término al occidente. Éste, pues, os será el término del sur. ^15:5El término del oriente es el Mar Salado hasta el fin del Jordán. Y el término de la parte del norte, desde la bahía del mar, desde el fin del Jordán; ^15:6y sube este término por Bet-hogla, y pasa del norte a Bet-araba, y de aquí sube este término a la piedra de Bohán, hijo de Rubén. ^15:7Y torna a subir este término a Debir desde el valle de Acor; y al norte mira sobre Gilgal, que está delante de la subida de Adumín, la cual está al sur del arroyo; y pasa este término a las aguas de Ensemes, y sale a la fuente de Rogel; ^15:8y sube este término por el valle del hijo de Hinom al lado sur del jebuseo; ésta es Jerusalén. Luego sube este término por la cumbre del monte que está delante del valle de Hinom hacia el occidente, el cual está en el extremo del valle de los nephilim hacia el norte. ^15:9Y rodea este término desde la cumbre del monte hasta la fuente de las aguas de Neftoa, y sale a las ciudades del monte de Efrón, rodeando luego el mismo término a Baala, la cual es Quiriat-jearim. ^15:10Y este límite rodeaba desde Baala hacia el occidente al monte de Seir; y pasa al lado del monte de Jearim hacia el norte, ésta es Quesalón, y desciende a Bet-semes, y pasa a Timna. ^15:11Sale luego este límite al lado de Ecrón hacia el norte; y rodea el mismo término a Sicrón, y pasa por el monte de Baala, y sale a Jabneel; y sale este término al mar. ^15:12El término del occidente es el Mar Grande y su costa. Éste es el término de los hijos de Judá en derredor por sus familias.

¶El complemento   Caleb y su familia tomaron Hebrón como su herencia por guerra (15:13 - 63)

^15:13Pero a Caleb, hijo de Jefone, dio parte entre los hijos de Judá, conforme al mandamiento de Jehová a Josué, esto es, a Quiriat-arba, del padre de Anac, que es Hebrón. ^15:14Y Caleb echó de allí tres hijos de Anac, a Sesai, Ahimán, y Talmai, hijos de Anac.

^15:15De aquí subió a los que moraban en Debir; y el nombre de Debir era antes Quiriat-sefer. ^15:16Y dijo Caleb, “Al que hiriere a Quiriat-sefer, y la tomare, yo le daré a mi hija Acsa por esposa”. ^15:17Y la tomó Otoniel, hijo de Cenaz, hermano de Caleb; y él le dio por esposa a su hija Acsa.

^15:18Y aconteció que cuando ella vino a él, ella le persuadió para pedir a su padre un campo. Ella entonces se bajó del asno, y Caleb le dijo, “¿Qué quieres?”. ^15:19Y ella respondió, “Dame una bendición; puesto que me has dado tierra de sequedal; dame también fuentes de aguas”. Él entonces le dio las fuentes de arriba, y las fuentes de abajo.

^15:20Ésta, pues, es la heredad de la tribu de los hijos de Judá por sus familias. ^15:21Y fueron las ciudades del término de la tribu de los hijos de Judá hacia el término de Edom hacia el sur; Cabseel, Eder, Jagur, ^15:22Cina, Dimona, Adada, ^15:23Cedes, Hazor, Itnán, ^15:24Zif, Telem, Bealot, ^15:25Hazor-hadata, Queriot-hezrón, que es Hazor, ^15:26Amam, Sema, Molada, ^15:27Asar-gada, Hesmón, Bet-pelet, ^15:28Hasar-sual, Beerseba, Bizotia, ^15:29Baala, Iim, Esem, ^15:30Eltolad, Cesil, Horma, ^15:31Siclag, Madmana, Sansana, ^15:32Lebaot, Silim, Aín y Rimón; en todas veintinueve ciudades con sus aldeas. ^15:33En las llanuras, Estaol, Zora, Asena, ^15:34Zanoa, Enganim, Tapúa, Enam, ^15:35Jarmut, Adulam, Soco, Azeca, ^15:36Saaraim, Aditaim, Gedera y Gederotaim; catorce ciudades con sus aldeas. ^15:37Senán, Hadasa, Migdalgad, ^15:38Dilán, Mizpa, Jocteel, ^15:39Laquis, Boscat, Eglón, ^15:40Cabón, Lamas, Quitlis, ^15:41Gederot, Bet-dagón, Naama y Maceda; dieciséis ciudades con sus aldeas. ^15:42Libna, Eter, Asán, ^15:43Jifta, Asena, Nesib, ^15:44Keila, Aczib y Maresa; nueve ciudades con sus aldeas. ^15:45Ecrón con sus villas y sus aldeas; ^15:46desde Ecrón hasta el mar, todas las que están a la costa de Asdod con sus aldeas. ^15:47Asdod con sus villas y sus aldeas, Gaza con sus villas y sus aldeas hasta el río de Egipto, y el Mar Grande con sus términos. ^15:48Y en las montañas, Samir, y Jatir, y Soco, ^15:49Dana, Quiriat-sana, que es Debir, ^15:50Anab, Estemoa, Anim, ^15:51Gosén, Holón y Gilo; once ciudades con sus aldeas. ^15:52Arab, Duma, Esán, ^15:53Janum, Bet-tapúa, Afeca, ^15:54Humta, Quiriat-arba, que es Hebrón y Sior; nueve ciudades con sus aldeas. ^15:55Maón, el Carmelo, Zif, Juta, ^15:56Jezreel, Jocdeam, Zanoa, ^15:57Caín, Gabaa y Timna; diez ciudades con sus aldeas. ^15:58Halhul, Bet-zur, Gedor, ^15:59Maarat, Bet-anot y Eltecón; seis ciudades con sus aldeas. ^15:60Quiriat-baal, que es Quiriat-jearim y Rabá; dos ciudades con sus aldeas. ^15:61En el desierto, Bet-araba, Midín, Secaca, ^15:62Nibsan, la ciudad de la sal y Engadi; seis ciudades con sus aldeas.

^15:63Pero a los jebuseos que habitaban en Jerusalén, los hijos de Judá no los pudieron desarraigar; antes quedó el jebuseo en Jerusalén con los hijos de Judá, hasta hoy.

¶Lo opuesto   La herencia de los hijos de Efraín en la Tierra Prometida (16:1 - 10)

^16:1Y la suerte de los hijos de José salió desde el Jordán de Jericó hasta las aguas de Jericó hacia el oriente, al desierto que sube de Jericó al monte de Betel. ^16:2Y de Betel sale a Luz, y pasa al término de Arqui en Atarot; ^16:3y torna a descender hacia el mar al término de Jaflet, hasta el término de Bet-horón la de abajo, y hasta Gezer; y sale al mar.

^16:4Entonces los hijos de José, Manasés y Efraín, tomaron su herencia; ^16:5y fue el término de los hijos de Efraín por sus familias, fue el término de su herencia a la parte oriental, desde Atarot-adar hasta Bet-horón la de arriba; ^16:6y sale este término al mar, y a Micmetat al norte, y da vuelta este término hacia el oriente a Tanat-silo, y de aquí pasa al oriente a Janoa. ^16:7Y de Janoa desciende a Atarot, y a Naara, y toca en Jericó, y sale al Jordán. ^16:8Y de Tapúa torna este término hacia el mar al arroyo de Cana, y sale al mar.

Ésta es la heredad de la tribu de los hijos de Efraín por sus familias.

^16:9Hubo también ciudades que se apartaron para los hijos de Efraín en medio de la herencia de los hijos de Manasés, todas ciudades con sus aldeas.

^16:10Y no expulsaron a los cananeos que moraban en Gezer; pero los cananeos habitan entre los de Efraín hasta el día de hoy, y sirven bajo tributo.

¶Lo opuesto   La herencia de las hijas de Zelofehad entre la tribu de Manasés en la Tierra Prometida (17:1 - 4)

^17:1También hubo suerte para la tribu de Manasés, pues él era el primogénito de José; y Maquir el primogénito de Manasés, y padre de Galaad, el cual fue hombre de guerra, tuvo a Galaad y a Basán.

^17:2Tuvieron también suerte los otros hijos de Manasés conforme a sus familias; los hijos de Abiezer, y los hijos de Helec, y los hijos de Asriel, y los hijos de Siquem, y los hijos de Hefer, y los hijos de Semida; éstos fueron los hijos varones de Manasés hijo de José, por sus familias.

^17:3Pero Zelofehad, hijo de Hefer, hijo de Galaad, hijo de Maquir, hijo de Manasés, no tuvo hijos, sino hijas, los nombres de las cuales son estos: Maala, Noa, Hogla, Milca y Tirsa.

^17:4Éstas vinieron delante de Eleazar sacerdote, y de Josué hijo de Nun, y de los príncipes, y dijeron, “Jehová mandó a Moisés que nos diese heredad entre nuestros hermanos”.

Por lo tanto, de acuerdo con el Mandamiento de Jehová, les dio una herencia entre los hermanos de su padre.

§El complemento   Conclusión: La herencia de los hijos de José (17:5 - 18)

¶El complemento   La herencia de la media tribu de Manasés en el lado occidental de Jordania en la Tierra Prometida (17:5 - 11)

^17:5Y a Manasés le tocaron diez porciones, además de la tierra de Galaad y de Basán, que está al otro lado del Jordán: ^17:6porque las hijas de Manasés tuvieron heredad entre sus hijos, y la tierra de Galaad fue de los otros hijos de Manasés.

^17:7Y fue el término de Manasés desde Aser hasta Micmetat, la cual está delante de Siquem; y va este término a la mano derecha, a los que habitan en Tapúa.

^17:8Y la tierra de Tapúa fue de Manasés;

pero la ciudad de Tapúa, que está junto al término de Manasés, es de los hijos de Efraín. ^17:9Y desciende este término al arroyo de Cana, hacia el lado sur del arroyo. Estas ciudades de Efraín están entre las ciudades de Manasés; y el término de Manasés es desde el norte del mismo arroyo, y sus salidas son al mar. ^17:10Efraín al sur, y Manasés al norte, y el mar es su término; y se encuentran con Aser al lado del norte, y con Isacar al oriente.

^17:11Tuvo también Manasés en Isacar y en Aser a Bet-seán y sus aldeas, e Ibleam y sus aldeas, y los moradores de Dor y sus aldeas, y los moradores de Endor y sus aldeas, y los moradores de Taanac y sus aldeas, y los moradores de Meguido y sus aldeas; tres provincias.

¶El complemento   Josué alentó a los hijos de José a tomar su herencia a la fuerza (17:12 - 18)

^17:12Pero los hijos de Manasés no pudieron echar a los de aquellas ciudades; antes el cananeo quiso habitar en la tierra.

^17:13Pero cuando los hijos de Israel se hicieron fuertes, pusieron a tributo al cananeo, pero no lo echaron.

^17:14Y los hijos de José hablaron a Josué, diciendo, “¿Por qué me has dado por heredad una sola suerte y una sola parte, siendo yo un pueblo tan grande y que Jehová me ha así bendecido hasta ahora?”. ^17:15Y Josué les respondió, “Si eres pueblo tan grande, sube tú al monte, y corta para ti allí en la tierra del ferezeo y de los nephilim, pues que el monte de Efraín es angosto para ti”.

^17:16Y los hijos de José dijeron, “No nos bastará a nosotros este monte; y todos los cananeos que habitan la tierra de la llanura, tienen carros herrados; los que están en Bet-seán y en sus aldeas, y los que están en el valle de Jezreel”. ^17:17Entonces Josué respondió a la casa de José, a Efraín y Manasés, diciendo, “Tú eres gran pueblo, y tienes gran fuerza; no tendrás sólo una suerte; ^17:18sino que aquel monte será tuyo: porque aunque es bosque, tú lo desmontarás.

“Y serán tuyos sus términos: porque tú echarás al cananeo, aunque tenga carros herrados, y aunque sea fuerte”.
