^1:5“No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life.”

^1:8“This Book of the Law shall not depart out of your mouth; but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it: for only then shall you make your way prosperous, and only then shall you have good success.

^1:9“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and very courageous; be not afraid; neither be dismayed: for Jehovah your God is with you wheresoever you go.”

Then you shall return to the land of your possession, and enjoy it, which Moses Jehovah's servant gave you on this side of Jordan toward the sunrise.’” ^1:16And they answered Joshua, saying, “All that you command us we will do; and wheresoever you send us, we will go. ^1:17According as we gave heed to Moses in all things, so will we give heed to you; only Jehovah your God be with you, as he was with Moses. ^1:18Whosoever he is that rebels against your command, and will not give heed to your words in all that you command him, he shall be put to death; only be strong and very courageous.”

^2:1And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, “Go view the land, even Jericho.” And they went, and came into a prostitute's house, who was named Rahab, and lodged there. ^2:2And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, “Behold, men of the children of Israel came in here tonight to spy out the country.” ^2:3And the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring forth the men that have come to you, which have entered into your house: for they have come to spy out all the country.” ^2:4And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said this, “Men came to me, but I did not know where they were from; ^2:5and it came to pass about the time of shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out. Where the men went, I do not know; pursue after them quickly: for you shall overtake them.” ^2:6But she had brought them up to the roof of the house, and hidden them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof. ^2:7And the men pursued after them the way to Jordan to the fords; and as soon as they which pursued after them went out, they shut the gate.

^2:8And before they had laid down, she came up to them upon the roof; ^2:9and she said to the men, “I know that Jehovah has given you the land, and that your terror has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you: ^2:10for we have heard how Jehovah dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when you came out of Egypt; and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side of Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed. ^2:11And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts melted; neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for Jehovah your God, he is the true God in heaven above, and in earth beneath. ^2:12Now therefore, please, swear to me by Jehovah, since I have shown you kindness, that you will also show kindness to my father's house, and give me a true token; ^2:13and that you will save alive my father, my mother, my brothers, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.” ^2:14And the men answered her, “Our life for yours, if you do not reveal this our business. And it shall be, when Jehovah has given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with you.” ^2:15Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall. ^2:16And she said to them, “Go to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers have returned; and afterward you may go your way.” ^2:17And the men said to her, “We will be blameless of this your oath which you have made us swear. ^2:18Behold, when we come into the land, you shall bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which you let us down by; and you shall bring your father, your mother, your brothers, and all your father's household, home to you. ^2:19And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless. And whosoever shall be with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand is upon him. ^2:20And if you reveal this our business, then we will be free of your oath which you have made us to swear.” ^2:21And she said, “According to your words, so be it.” And she sent them away, and they departed; and she bound the scarlet line in the window.

^2:22And they went, and came to the mountain, and remained there three days, until the pursuers were returned; and the pursuers searched for them throughout all the way, but did not find them. ^2:23So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over Jordan, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all things that befell them. ^2:24And they said to Joshua, “Truly Jehovah has delivered into our hands all the land: for even all the inhabitants of the country are fainthearted because of us.”

^3:1And Joshua rose early in the morning; and they moved from Shittim, and came to Jordan, he and all the children of Israel, and lodged there before they passed over.

^3:2And it came to pass after three days, that the officers went through the army; ^3:3and they commanded the people, saying, “When you see the Ark of the Covenant of Jehovah your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then you shall move from your place, and go after it. ^3:4Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure. Do not come near to it, that you may know the way by which you must go: for you have not passed this way before.”

^3:5And Joshua said to the people, “Sanctify yourselves: for tomorrow Jehovah will do wonders among you.”

^3:6And Joshua spoke to the priests, saying, “Take up the Ark of the Covenant, and pass over before the people.” And they took up the Ark of the Covenant, and went before the people. ^3:7And Jehovah said to Joshua, “This day will I begin to magnify you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so will I be with you. ^3:8And you shall command the priests that bear the Ark of the Covenant, saying, ‘When you have come to the brink of the water of Jordan, you shall stand still in Jordan.’”

^3:9And Joshua said to the children of Israel, “Come here, and hear the words of Jehovah your God.” ^3:10And Joshua said, “Hereby you shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Hivites, the Perizzites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, and the Jebusites. ^3:11Behold, the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord of all the earth is passing over before you into Jordan. ^3:12Now therefore take you twelve men out of the tribes of Israel, out of every tribe a man. ^3:13And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the Ark of Jehovah, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the water of Jordan, that the water of Jordan shall be cut off from the water that comes down from above; and it shall stand upon a heap.”

^3:14And it came to pass, when the people moved from their tents, to pass over Jordan, and the priests bearing the Ark of the Covenant before the people; ^3:15and as they that carried the Ark came to Jordan, and the feet of the priests that carried the Ark were dipped in the brim of the water (for Jordan overflows all his banks all the time of harvest), ^3:16that the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon a heap very far from the city Adam (that is beside Zaretan); and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off; and the people passed over right before Jericho. ^3:17And the priests that carried the Ark of the Covenant of Jehovah stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were completely passed over Jordan.

^4:1And it came to pass, when all the people were completely passed over Jordan, that Jehovah spoke to Joshua, saying, ^4:2“Take twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man; ^4:3and command them, saying, ‘Take from here out of the midst of Jordan, out of the place where the priests' feet stood firm, twelve stones; and you shall carry them over with you, and leave them in the lodging place, where you shall lodge this night.’”

^4:4Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man; ^4:5and Joshua said to them, “Pass over before the Ark of Jehovah your God into the midst of Jordan, and every man of you take up a stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel: ^4:6that this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, ‘What do you mean by these stones?’ ^4:7Then you shall answer them, that the water of Jordan was cut off before the Ark of the Covenant of Jehovah; when it passed over Jordan, the water of Jordan was cut off; and these stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever.”

^4:8And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as Jehovah spoke to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them to the place where they lodged, and laid them down there. ^4:9And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests which carried the Ark of the Covenant stood; and they are there until this day: ^4:10for the priests which carried the Ark stood in the midst of Jordan, until everything was finished that Jehovah commanded Joshua to speak to the people, according to all that Moses commanded Joshua; and the people hurried and passed over. ^4:11And it came to pass, when all the people were completely passed over, that the Ark of Jehovah passed over, and the priests, in the presence of the people. ^4:12And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh, passed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spoke to them: ^4:13about forty thousand prepared for war passed over before Jehovah to battle, to the plains of Jericho. ^4:14On that day Jehovah magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of his life.

^4:15And Jehovah spoke to Joshua, saying, ^4:16“Command the priests that bear the Ark of the testimony, that they come up out of Jordan.” ^4:17Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, “Come up out of Jordan.” ^4:18And it came to pass, when the priests that carried the Ark of the Covenant of Jehovah were come up out of the midst of Jordan, and the soles of the priests' feet were lifted up to the dry land, that the waters of Jordan returned to its' place, and flowed over all his banks, as they did before. ^4:19And the people came up out of Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and camped in Gilgal, in the east border of Jericho. ^4:20And those twelve stones, which they took out of Jordan, Joshua set up in Gilgal. ^4:21And he spoke to the children of Israel, saying, “When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, ‘What do these stones mean?’, ^4:22then you shall let your children know, saying, ‘Israel came over this Jordan on dry land. ^4:23For Jehovah your God dried up the water of Jordan from before you, until you were passed over, as Jehovah your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we went over; ^4:24that all the people of the earth might know the hand of Jehovah, that it is mighty, that you might fear Jehovah your God forever.’”

^5:1And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the westward side of Jordan, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that Jehovah had dried up the water of Jordan from before the children of Israel until we had passed over, that their hearts melted; neither was there spirit in them anymore, because of the children of Israel.

^5:2At that time Jehovah said to Joshua, “Make sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.” ^5:3And Joshua made him sharp knives; and he circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.

^5:4And this is the reason that Joshua circumcised them: all the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt. ^5:5For all the people that came out were circumcised; but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised: ^5:6for the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, until all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they did not obey the voice of Jehovah; to whom Jehovah had sworn that he would not show them the land, which Jehovah swore to their fathers that he would give us, a land that flows with milk and honey. ^5:7And their children, whom he raised up in their place, them Joshua circumcised: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way.

^5:8And it came to pass, when they finished circumcising all the people, that they remained in their places in the camp, until they were whole.

^5:9And Jehovah said to Joshua, “This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you"; therefore the name of the place is called Gilgal until this day.

^5:10And the children of Israel camped in Gilgal; and they kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month at evening in the plains of Jericho.

^5:12And the manna ceased on the next day after they had eaten of the old grain of the land;

and the children of Israel did not have manna anymore;

but they ate of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

^6:1Now Jericho was strictly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in. ^6:2And Jehovah said to Joshua, “See, I have given into your hand Jericho, and its king, and the mighty men of valor. ^6:3And you shall circle the city, all the men of war, and go round about the city once: you shall do this six days. ^6:4And seven priests shall bear before the Ark seven trumpets of rams' horns; and the seventh day you shall circle the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets. ^6:5And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram's horn; and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him.”

^6:6And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said to them, “Take up the Ark of the Covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the Ark of Jehovah.” ^6:7And he said to the people, “Pass on, and circle the city, and let him that is armed pass on before the Ark of Jehovah.” ^6:8And it came to pass, when Joshua had spoken to the people, that the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns passed on before Jehovah, and blew with the trumpets; and the Ark of the Covenant of Jehovah followed them. ^6:9And the armed men went before the priests that blew with the trumpets, and the rear guard came after the Ark, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets. ^6:10And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, “You shall not shout, nor make any noise with your voice; neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day that I tell you to shout, then you shall shout.” ^6:11So the Ark of Jehovah circled the city, going around it once; and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp.

^6:12And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the Ark of Jehovah. ^6:13And seven priests bearing seven trumpets of rams' horns before the Ark of Jehovah went on continually, and blew with the trumpets; and the armed men went before them; but the rear guard came after the Ark of Jehovah, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets. ^6:14And the second day they circled the city once, and returned into the camp: so did they six days.

^6:15And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early about the dawning of the day, and circled the city after the same manner seven times: only on that day they circled the city seven times. ^6:16And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew with the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, “Shout! For Jehovah has given you the city. ^6:17And the city shall be cursed, even it, and all that are in it, to Jehovah; only Rahab the prostitute shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent. ^6:18And you, in any manner keep yourselves from the cursed thing, lest you make yourselves cursed, when you take of the cursed thing, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it. ^6:19But all the silver, gold, and vessels of bronze and iron, are consecrated to Jehovah: they shall come into the treasury of Jehovah.” ^6:20So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets; and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him; and they took the city. ^6:21And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, ox, sheep, and donkey, with the edge of the sword.

^6:25And Joshua saved Rahab the prostitute alive, and her father's household, and all that she had; and she dwells in Israel even until this day, because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

^6:26And Joshua adjured them at that time, saying, “Cursed is the man before Jehovah, that rises up and builds this city Jericho.

“He shall lay its foundation in his firstborn; and in his youngest son shall he set up its gates.”

^6:27So Jehovah was with Joshua; and his fame spread throughout all the region.

§El complemento   Cuerpo: Josué llevó a los hijos de Israel a cruzar el río Jordán sobre tierra seca (1:10 - 6:5)

¶Único   Rahab, la prostituta, protegió a los espías, y aseguró la supervivencia de sí misma y su familia desde la destrucción de la ciudad (1:10 - 2:24)

^1:10Y Josué mandó a los oficiales del pueblo, diciendo, ^1:11“Pasad por medio del campamento, y mandad al pueblo, diciendo, ‘Preparaos provisiones: porque dentro de tres días pasaréis el Jordán, para que entréis a poseer la tierra que Jehová vuestro Dios os da para que la poseáis’”.

^1:12También habló Josué a los Rubenitas y Gaditas, y a la media tribu de Manasés, diciendo, ^1:13“Acordaos de la Palabra que Moisés, siervo de Jehová, os mandó diciendo, ‘Jehová vuestro Dios os ha dado reposo, y os ha dado esta tierra. ^1:14Vuestras esposas, vuestros niños y vuestras bestias quedarán en la tierra que Moisés os ha dado a este lado del Jordán; pero ustedes, todos los valientes y fuertes, pasaréis armados delante de vuestros hermanos, y les ayudaréis; ^1:15hasta tanto que Jehová haya dado reposo a vuestros hermanos como a ustedes, y que ellos también posean la tierra que Jehová vuestro Dios les da; entonces volveréis a la tierra de vuestra herencia y la disfrutaréis, la cual Moisés siervo de Jehová os dio, a este lado del Jordán hacia donde nace el sol’”. ^1:16Entonces respondieron a Josué, diciendo, “Nosotros haremos todas las cosas que nos has mandado, e iremos adondequiera que nos mandes. ^1:17De la manera que obedecimos a Moisés en todas las cosas, así te obedeceremos a ti; solamente que Jehová tu Dios esté contigo como estuvo con Moisés. ^1:18Cualquiera que fuere rebelde a tu mandamiento, y no obedeciere a tus palabras en todas las cosas que le mandares, que muera; solamente esfuérzate y sé valiente”.

^2:1Y Josué, hijo de Nun, envió desde Sitim dos espías secretamente, diciéndoles, “Andad, reconoced la tierra, y a Jericó”. Y fueron, y entraron en casa de una mujer ramera que se llamaba Rahab, y posaron allí. ^2:2Y fue dado aviso al rey de Jericó, diciendo, “He aquí que hombres de los hijos de Israel han venido aquí esta noche a espiar la tierra”. ^2:3Entonces el rey de Jericó, envió a decir a Rahab, “Saca fuera los hombres que han venido a ti, y han entrado en tu casa: porque han venido a espiar toda la tierra”. ^2:4Pero la mujer había tomado los dos hombres, y los había escondido; y dijo, “Verdad que hombres vinieron a mí, pero no supe de dónde eran. ^2:5Y a la hora de cerrar la puerta, siendo ya oscuro, esos hombres salieron, y no sé a dónde se han ido; seguidlos aprisa y los alcanzaréis”. ^2:6Pero ella los había hecho subir al terrado, y los había escondido entre manojos de lino que en aquel terrado tenía puestos. ^2:7Y los hombres fueron tras ellos por el camino del Jordán, hasta los vados; y la puerta fue cerrada después que salieron los que tras ellos iban.

^2:8Y antes que ellos durmiesen, ella subió a ellos al terrado, y les dijo, ^2:9“Sé que Jehová os ha dado esta tierra: porque el temor de ustedes ha caído sobre nosotros, y todos los moradores del país desmayan por causa de ustedes: ^2:10porque hemos oído que Jehová hizo secar las aguas del Mar Rojo delante de ustedes, cuando salisteis de Egipto, y lo que habéis hecho a los dos reyes de los amorreos que estaban al otro lado del Jordán, a Sehón y a Og, a los cuales habéis destruido. ^2:11Oyendo esto, ha desmayado nuestro corazón, y no ha quedado más ánimo en hombre alguno por causa de ustedes: porque Jehová vuestro Dios es Dios arriba en los Cielo y abajo en la tierra. ^2:12Os ruego pues, ahora, que me juréis por Jehová, que como he hecho misericordia con ustedes, así la haréis ustedes con la casa de mi padre, de lo cual me daréis una señal segura; ^2:13y que salvaréis la vida a mi padre y a mi madre, y a mis hermanos y hermanas, y a todo lo que es suyo; y que libraréis nuestras vidas de la muerte”. ^2:14Y le respondieron, “Nuestra alma por ustedes hasta la muerte, si no denunciareis este nuestro asunto; y cuando Jehová nos hubiere dado la tierra, nosotros haremos contigo misericordia y verdad”. ^2:15Entonces ella los hizo descender con una cuerda por la ventana: porque su casa estaba a la pared del muro, y ella vivía en el muro. ^2:16Y les dijo, “Marchaos al monte, para que los que fueron tras ustedes no os encuentren; y permaneced escondidos allí tres días, hasta que los que os siguen hayan vuelto; y después os iréis por vuestro camino”. ^2:17Y le dijeron, “Nosotros quedaremos libres de este juramento que nos has hecho jurar. ^2:18He aquí, cuando nosotros entremos en la tierra, tú atarás este cordón de grana a la ventana por la cual nos descolgaste; y tú juntarás en tu casa a tu padre y a tu madre, a tus hermanos y a toda la familia de tu padre. ^2:19Cualquiera que saliere fuera de las puertas de tu casa, su sangre será sobre su cabeza, y nosotros seremos sin culpa. Pero cualquiera que se estuviere en casa contigo, su sangre será sobre nuestra cabeza, si mano le tocare. ^2:20Y si tú denunciares este nuestro asunto, nosotros seremos libres de este tu juramento con que nos has hecho jurar”. ^2:21Y ella respondió, “Sea así como habéis dicho”. Luego los despidió, y se fueron; y ella ató el cordón de grana a la ventana.

^2:22Y caminando ellos, llegaron al monte, y estuvieron allí tres días, hasta que los que los seguían se hubiesen vuelto; y los que los siguieron, buscaron por todo el camino, pero no los hallaron. ^2:23Y volviéndose los dos varones, descendieron del monte, y pasaron, y vinieron a Josué hijo de Nun, y le contaron todas las cosas que les habían acontecido. ^2:24Y dijeron a Josué: “Jehová ha entregado toda la tierra en nuestras manos; y también todos los moradores del país desmayan delante de nosotros”.

¶El complemento   Josué y los líderes del ejército prepararon a los hijos de Israel para cruzar el río Jordán (3:1 - 13)

^3:1Y Josué se levantó de mañana, y partieron de Sitim, y vinieron hasta el Jordán, él y todos los hijos de Israel, y reposaron allí antes de pasarlo.

^3:2Y pasados tres días, los oficiales atravesaron por medio del campamento, ^3:3y mandaron al pueblo, diciendo, “Cuando viereis el arca del Pacto de Jehová vuestro Dios, y los sacerdotes y levitas que la llevan, ustedes partiréis de vuestro lugar, y marcharéis en pos de ella; ^3:4pero entre ustedes y ella habrá una distancia como de la medida de dos mil codos, no os acercaréis a ella; para que sepáis el camino por el cuál debéis ir, por cuanto ustedes no habéis pasado antes por este camino”.

^3:5Y Josué dijo al pueblo, “Santificaos: porque mañana Jehová hará maravillas entre ustedes”.

^3:6Y habló Josué a los sacerdotes, diciendo, “Tomad el arca del Pacto, y pasad delante del pueblo”. Y ellos tomaron el arca del Pacto, y fueron delante del pueblo. ^3:7Entonces Jehová dijo a Josué, “Desde este día comenzaré a engrandecerte delante de los ojos de todo Israel, para que entiendan que como estuve con Moisés, así estaré contigo. ^3:8Tú, pues, mandarás a los sacerdotes que llevan el arca del Pacto, diciendo, ‘Cuando hubiereis entrado hasta el borde del agua del Jordán, pararéis en el Jordán’”.

^3:9Y Josué dijo a los hijos de Israel, “Llegaos acá, y escuchad las palabras de Jehová vuestro Dios”. ^3:10Y añadió Josué, “En esto conoceréis que el Dios viviente está en medio de ustedes, y que él echará de delante de ustedes al cananeo, y al heteo, y al heveo, y al ferezeo, y al gergeseo, y al amorreo, y al jebuseo. ^3:11He aquí, el arca del Pacto del Señor de toda la tierra pasa el Jordán delante de ustedes. ^3:12Tomad, pues, ahora doce hombres de las tribus de Israel, de cada tribu uno. ^3:13Y cuando las plantas de los pies de los sacerdotes que llevan el arca de Jehová Señor de toda la tierra, fueren asentadas sobre las aguas del Jordán, las aguas del Jordán se partirán: porque las aguas que vienen de arriba se detendrán en un montón”.

^3:14Y aconteció que cuando el pueblo partió de sus tiendas para pasar el Jordán con los sacerdotes delante del pueblo llevando el arca del Pacto, ^3:15cuando los que llevaban el arca entraron en el Jordán, así como los pies de los sacerdotes que llevaban el arca se mojaron a la orilla del agua (porque el Jordán suele desbordarse sobre todas sus riberas todo el tiempo de la siega), ^3:16las aguas que venían de arriba, se pararon como en un montón bien lejos de la ciudad de Adam, que está al lado de Zaretán; y las que descendían al mar del Arabá, el Mar Salado, se acabaron y fueron partidas; y el pueblo pasó frente a Jericó. ^3:17Pero los sacerdotes que llevaban el arca del Pacto de Jehová, estuvieron en seco, firmes en medio del Jordán, hasta que todo el pueblo hubo acabado de pasar el Jordán; y todo Israel pasó en seco.

^4:1Y cuando toda el pueblo hubo acabado de pasar el Jordán, Jehová habló a Josué, diciendo, ^4:2“Tomad del pueblo doce hombres, uno de cada tribu, ^4:3y mandadles, diciendo, ‘Tomaos de aquí del medio del Jordán, del lugar donde están firmes los pies de los sacerdotes, doce piedras, las cuales pasaréis con ustedes, y las asentaréis en el alojamiento donde habéis de pasar la noche’”.

^4:4Entonces Josué llamó a los doce hombres, los cuales él había preparado de entre los hijos de Israel, uno de cada tribu. ^4:5Y les dijo Josué, “Pasad delante del arca de Jehová vuestro Dios al medio del Jordán; y cada uno de ustedes tome una piedra sobre su hombro, conforme al número de las tribus de los hijos de Israel; ^4:6para que esto sea señal entre ustedes; y cuando vuestros hijos preguntaren a sus padres mañana, diciendo, ‘¿Qué significan para ustedes estas piedras?’ ^4:7Les responderéis, ‘Que las aguas del Jordán fueron partidas delante del arca del Pacto de Jehová; cuando ella pasó el Jordán, las aguas del Jordán se partieron; y estas piedras serán por memorial a los hijos de Israel para siempre’”.

^4:8Y los hijos de Israel lo hicieron así como Josué les mandó. Tomaron doce piedras del medio del Jordán, como Jehová lo había dicho a Josué, conforme al número de las tribus de los hijos de Israel, y las pasaron consigo al alojamiento, y las asentaron allí. ^4:9Josué también levantó doce piedras en medio del Jordán, en el lugar donde estuvieron los pies de los sacerdotes que llevaban el arca del Pacto; y han estado allí hasta hoy. ^4:10Y los sacerdotes que llevaban el arca se pararon en medio del Jordán, hasta tanto que se hizo todo lo que Jehová había mandado a Josué que hablase al pueblo, conforme a todas las cosas que Moisés había mandado a Josué; y el pueblo se dio prisa y pasó. ^4:11Y sucedió que cuando todo el pueblo acabó de pasar, también pasó el arca de Jehová, y los sacerdotes, en presencia del pueblo. ^4:12También los hijos de Rubén y los hijos de Gad, y la media tribu de Manasés, pasaron armados delante de los hijos de Israel, según Moisés les había dicho: ^4:13como cuarenta mil hombres armados a punto pasaron hacia la llanura de Jericó delante de Jehová a la guerra. ^4:14En aquel día Jehová engrandeció a Josué en ojos de todo Israel; y le temieron, como habían temido a Moisés, todos los días de su vida.

^4:15Y Jehová habló a Josué, diciendo, ^4:16“Manda a los sacerdotes que llevan el arca del testimonio, que suban del Jordán”. ^4:17Y Josué mandó a los sacerdotes, diciendo, “Subid del Jordán”. ^4:18Y aconteció que cuando los sacerdotes que llevaban el arca del Pacto de Jehová, subieron del medio del Jordán, y las plantas de los pies de los sacerdotes estuvieron en lugar seco, las aguas del Jordán se volvieron a su lugar, corriendo como antes sobre todos sus bordes. ^4:19Y el pueblo subió del Jordán el día diez del mes primero, y acamparon en Gilgal, al lado oriental de Jericó. ^4:20Y Josué erigió en Gilgal las doce piedras que habían traído del Jordán. ^4:21Y habló a los hijos de Israel, diciendo, “Cuando mañana preguntaren vuestros hijos a sus padres, y dijeren, ‘¿Qué significan para ustedes estas piedras?’ ^4:22Declararéis a vuestros hijos, diciendo, ‘Israel pasó en seco por este Jordán: ^4:23porque Jehová vuestro Dios secó las aguas del Jordán delante de ustedes, hasta que habíais pasado, a la manera que Jehová vuestro Dios lo había hecho en el Mar Rojo, al cual secó delante de nosotros hasta que pasamos: ^4:24para que todos los pueblos de la tierra conozcan la mano de Jehová, que es poderosa; para que temáis a Jehová vuestro Dios todos los días’”.

¶Lo opuesto   Josué hizo que los hombres de Israel se circuncidaran en Gilgal (5:1 - 9)

^5:1Y sucedió que cuando todos los reyes de los amorreos, que estaban al otro lado del Jordán al occidente, y todos los reyes de los cananeos, que estaban cerca del mar, oyeron cómo Jehová había secado las aguas del Jordán delante de los hijos de Israel hasta que hubieron pasado, desfalleció su corazón, y no hubo más espíritu en ellos delante de los hijos de Israel.

^5:2En aquel tiempo Jehová dijo a Josué, “Hazte cuchillos afilados, y vuelve a circuncidar por segunda vez a los hijos de Israel”. ^5:3Y Josué se hizo cuchillos afilados, y circuncidó a los hijos de Israel en el monte de los prepucios.

^5:4Ésta es la causa por la cual Josué los circuncidó: todo el pueblo que había salido de Egipto, los varones, todos los hombres de guerra, habían muerto en el desierto por el camino, después que salieron de Egipto. ^5:5Porque todos los del pueblo que habían salido, estaban circuncidados; pero todos los del pueblo que había nacido en el desierto, por el camino, después que salieron de Egipto, no estaban circuncidados: ^5:6porque los hijos de Israel anduvieron por el desierto cuarenta años, hasta que toda el pueblo de los hombres de guerra que habían salido de Egipto, fue consumida, por cuanto no obedecieron a la voz de Jehová; por lo cual Jehová les juró que no les dejaría ver la tierra, de la cual Jehová había jurado a sus padres que nos la daría, tierra que fluye leche y miel. ^5:7Y a los hijos de ellos, que él había levantado en su lugar, Josué los circuncidó; pues eran incircuncisos: porque no habían sido circuncidados por el camino.

^5:8Y sucedió que cuando terminaron de circuncidar a toda el pueblo, se quedaron en su lugar en el campamento, hasta que sanaron.

^5:9Y Jehová dijo a Josué, “Hoy he quitado de ustedes el oprobio de Egipto”; por lo cual el nombre de aquel lugar fue llamado Gilgal, hasta hoy.

¶Lo opuesto    Los hijos de Israel celebraron la Pascua y la Fiesta de los Panes sin Levadura; y luego, el maná cesó (5:10 - 12)

^5:10Y los hijos de Israel acamparon en Gilgal, y celebraron la pascua a los catorce días del mes, por la tarde, en los llanos de Jericó.

^5:11Y al otro día de la pascua comieron del fruto de la tierra los panes sin levadura, y en el mismo día espigas nuevas tostadas.

^5:12Y el maná cesó el día siguiente, desde que comenzaron a comer del fruto de la tierra;

y los hijos de Israel nunca más tuvieron maná;

pero comieron de los frutos de la tierra de Canaán aquel año.

^5:13Y sucedió que cuando Josué estaba cerca de Jericó, alzó sus ojos, y he aquí, un varón estaba delante de él, con su espada desenvainada en su mano. Y Josué fue hacia él y le dijo, “¿Eres de los nuestros, o de nuestros enemigos?”. ^5:14Y él respondió, “No; sino que he venido ahora como Príncipe del ejército de Jehová”. Y Josué postrándose sobre su rostro a la tierra y adoró; y le dijo, “¿Qué dice mi Señor a su siervo?”. ^5:15Y el Príncipe del ejército de Jehová respondió a Josué, “Quita las sandalias de tus pies: porque el lugar donde estás es santo”. Y Josué lo hizo así.

^6:1Ahora Jericó estaba cerrada, bien cerrada, a causa de los hijos de Israel: nadie entraba, ni salía. ^6:2Y Jehová dijo a Josué, “Mira, yo he entregado en tu mano a Jericó y a su rey, con sus varones de guerra. ^6:3Cercaréis, pues, la ciudad todos los hombres de guerra, yendo alrededor de la ciudad una vez; y esto haréis seis días. ^6:4Y siete sacerdotes llevarán siete trompetas de cuernos de carneros delante del arca; y al séptimo día daréis siete vueltas a la ciudad, y los sacerdotes tocarán las trompetas. ^6:5Y cuando tocaren prolongadamente el cuerno de carnero, así que oyereis el sonido de la trompeta, todo el pueblo gritará a gran voz, y el muro de la ciudad se vendrá abajo; entonces el pueblo subirá cada uno en derecho de sí”.

^6:6Y llamando Josué hijo de Nun a los sacerdotes, les dijo, “Llevad el arca del Pacto, y que siete sacerdotes lleven trompetas de cuernos de carneros delante del arca de Jehová”. ^6:7Y dijo al pueblo, “Pasad, y rodead la ciudad; y los que están armados pasarán delante del arca de Jehová”. ^6:8Y sucedió que cuando Josué hubo hablado al pueblo, los siete sacerdotes, llevando las siete trompetas de cuernos de carneros, pasaron delante del arca de Jehová y tocaron las trompetas; y el arca del Pacto de Jehová los seguía. ^6:9Y los hombres armados iban delante de los sacerdotes que tocaban las trompetas, y el pueblo reunida iba detrás del arca, andando y tocando las trompetas. ^6:10Y Josué mandó al pueblo, diciendo, “Ustedes no gritaréis, ni se oirá vuestra voz, ni saldrá palabra de vuestra boca, hasta el día que yo os diga, ‘Gritad’; entonces gritaréis”. ^6:11Así hizo que el arca de Jehová diera una vuelta alrededor de la ciudad, y volvieron luego al campamento, y en el campamento pasaron la noche.

^6:12Y Josué se levantó de mañana, y los sacerdotes tomaron el arca de Jehová. ^6:13Y los siete sacerdotes, llevando las siete trompetas de cuernos de carneros, fueron delante del arca de Jehová, andando siempre y tocando las trompetas; y los hombres armados iban delante de ellos, y el pueblo reunida iba detrás del arca de Jehová, andando y tocando las trompetas. ^6:14Así dieron otra vuelta a la ciudad el segundo día, y volvieron al campamento; de esta manera hicieron por seis días.

^6:15Y sucedió que en el séptimo día se levantaron temprano, al despuntar el alba, y dieron vuelta a la ciudad de la misma manera; solamente ese día dieron vuelta alrededor de la ciudad siete veces. ^6:16Y aconteció que cuando los sacerdotes tocaron las trompetas la séptima vez, Josué dijo al pueblo, “¡Gritad! Porque Jehová os ha entregado la ciudad. ^6:17Pero la ciudad será anatema a Jehová, ella con todas las cosas que están en ella; solamente Rahab la ramera vivirá, con todos los que estuvieren en casa con ella, por cuanto escondió los mensajeros que enviamos. ^6:18Pero guardaos ustedes del anatema, que ni toquéis, ni toméis alguna cosa del anatema, no sea que hagáis anatema el campo de Israel, y lo turbéis. ^6:19Pero toda la plata y el oro, y los vasos de bronce y de hierro, son consagrados a Jehová. Entrarán al tesoro de Jehová”. ^6:20Entonces el pueblo gritó, y los sacerdotes tocaron las trompetas; y aconteció que cuando el pueblo oyó el sonido de la trompeta, el pueblo gritó con gran vocerío, y el muro cayó a plomo; y el pueblo subió luego a la ciudad, cada uno en derecho de sí, y la tomaron. ^6:21Y destruyeron a filo de espada todo lo que había en la ciudad; hombres y mujeres, jóvenes y viejos, hasta los bueyes, ovejas y asnos.

¶El complemento   Josué pronunció una maldición sobre las ruinas de Jericó (6:22 - 27)

^6:22Pero Josué dijo a los dos hombres que habían reconocido la tierra, “Entrad en casa de la mujer ramera, y haced salir de allá a la mujer, y a todo lo que fuere suyo, como lo jurasteis”. ^6:23Y los jóvenes espías entraron, y sacaron a Rahab, a su padre, a su madre, a sus hermanos y todo lo que era suyo; y también sacaron a toda su parentela, y los pusieron fuera del campamento de Israel. ^6:24Y consumieron con fuego la ciudad, y todo lo que en ella había; solamente pusieron en el tesoro de la Casa de Jehová la plata, y el oro, y los vasos de bronce y de hierro.

^6:25Pero Josué salvó la vida a Rahab la ramera, y a la casa de su padre, y a todo lo que ella tenía; y habitó ella entre los israelitas hasta hoy; por cuanto escondió los mensajeros que Josué envió a reconocer a Jericó.

^6:26Y en aquel tiempo Josué les juramentó diciendo, “Maldito delante de Jehová el hombre que se levantare y reedificare esta ciudad de Jericó.

“Él pondrá su Fundación en su primogénito, y en su hijo menor asiente sus puertas”.

^6:27Así Jehová fue con Josué, y su nombre se divulgó por toda la tierra.
