Jeremiah, Chapter 2.3: Jehovah will judge the Jews of Judah who fled into Egypt (39:1 - 45:5)

Introduction: Jehovah delivered Zedekiah and his army to the king of Babylon, but delivered Jeremiah and Ebed-melech (39:1 - 18)

^39:1In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem; and they besieged it.

^39:2And in the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, the ninth day of the month, the city wall was breached. ^39:3And all the princes of the king of Babylon came in, and sat in the middle gate, even Nergal-sharezer, Samgar-nebo, Sarsechim, Rab-saris, Nergal-sharezer, Rabmag, with all the rest of the princes of the king of Babylon.

^39:4And it came to pass, that when Zedekiah the king of Judah saw them, and all the men of war, then they fled. And they went forth out of the city by night, by the way of the king's garden, by the gate between the two walls; and he went out the way of the plain.

^39:5But the Chaldeans' army pursued after them, and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho.

And when they had captured him, they brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath, where he gave judgment upon him. ^39:6Then the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah in Riblah before his eyes; also the king of Babylon slew all the nobles of Judah. ^39:7Moreover he put out the eyes of Zedekiah, and bound him with chains, to carry him to Babylon. ^39:8And the Chaldeans burned the king's house, and the houses of the people, with fire, and broke down the walls of Jerusalem.

¶Opposite   Jehovah promised to deliver Ebed-melech from the army of Babylon and protect his life (39:9 - 18)

^39:9Then Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carried away captive into Babylon the rest of the people that remained in the city, and those that fell away, that fell to him, with the rest of the people that remained. ^39:10But Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard left some of the poor of the people, who had nothing, in the land of Judah; and he gave them vineyards and fields at the same time.

^39:11Now Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon gave charge concerning Jeremiah to Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard, saying, ^39:12“Take him, and look well to him, and do him no harm; but do to him even as he shall say to you.” ^39:13So Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard sent, and also Nebushasban, Rab-saris, and Nergal-sharezer, Rabmag, and all the king of Babylon's princes: ^39:14even they sent, and they took Jeremiah out of the court of the prison, and they committed him to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, that he should carry him home; so he dwelt among the people.

^39:15Now the Word of Jehovah came to Jeremiah, while he was shut up in the court of the prison, saying, ^39:16“Go and speak to Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, ‘Thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will bring my words upon this city for evil, and not for good; and they shall be accomplished in that day before you.

^39:17“‘But I will deliver you in that day,’ says Jehovah. ‘And you shall not be given into the hand of the men of whom you are afraid. ^39:18For I will surely deliver you; and you shall not fall by the sword.

“‘But your life shall be for a prize to you, because you have put your trust in me,’ says Jehovah.”

^40:1The Word that came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, after that Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him being bound in chains among all that were carried away captive of Jerusalem and Judah, who were carried away captive to Babylon.

^40:2And the captain of the guard took Jeremiah, and said to him, “Jehovah your God has pronounced this evil upon this place. ^40:3Now Jehovah has brought it, and done according as he has said, because you have sinned against Jehovah, and have not obeyed his voice; therefore this thing has come upon you.

^40:4“And now, behold, I release you this day from the chains that were upon your hand. If it seems good to you to come with me into Babylon, come, and I will look after you; but if it seems ill to you to come with me into Babylon, forbear; behold, all the land is before you; wherever it seems good and convenient for you to go, there go.”

^40:5Now while he had not yet gone back, he said, “Go back also to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people; or go wherever it seems convenient for you to go.” So the captain of the guard gave him provisions and a reward, and let him go.

^40:6Then Jeremiah went to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah; and he dwelt with him among the people that were left in the land.

¶Opposite   The captains of the army of Judah warned Gedaliah that Ishmael was coming to kill him, but he didn’t believe them (40:7 - 16)

^40:7Now when all the captains of the armies which were in the fields, even they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land, and had committed to him men, women, children, and of the poor of the land, of them that were not carried away captive to Babylon, ^40:8then they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of a Maachathite, they and their men. ^40:9And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan swore to them and to their men, saying, “Fear not to serve the Chaldeans. Dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you. ^40:10As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mizpah to serve the Chaldeans, who will come to us; but you, gather wine, summer fruits, and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that you have taken.”

^40:11Likewise when all the Jews that were in Moab, and among the Ammonites, and in Edom, and that were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah, and that he had set over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, ^40:12even all the Jews returned out of all places where they were driven, and came to the land of Judah to Gedaliah, to Mizpah; and they gathered wine and summer fruits in abundance.

^40:13Moreover Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the armies that were in the fields, came to Gedaliah to Mizpah; ^40:14and they said to him, “Are you aware that Baalis the king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to slay you?” But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam did not believe them.

^40:15Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, “Please, let me go, and I will slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it. Why should he slay you, that all the Jews who are gathered to you should be scattered, and the remnant in Judah perish?”

^40:16But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said to Johanan the son of Kareah, “You shall not do this thing: for you speak falsely of Ishmael.”

^41:1Now it came to pass in the seventh month, that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah the son of Elishama, of the royal seed, and the princes of the king, even ten men with him, came to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah; and they ate bread together there in Mizpah.

^41:2Then Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and the ten men that were with him arose and smote Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan with the sword, and slew him, whom the king of Babylon had made governor over the land.

^41:3Ishmael also slew all the Jews that were with him, even with Gedaliah, at Mizpah, and the Chaldeans that were found there, and the men of war.

^41:4And it came to pass the second day after he had slain Gedaliah, and no man knew it, ^41:5that there came certain from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria, even eighty men, having their beards shaven, and their clothes torn, and having cut themselves, with offerings and incense in their hand, to bring them to the House of Jehovah. ^41:6And Ishmael the son of Nethaniah went forth from Mizpah to meet them, weeping as he went along; and it came to pass, as he met them, he said to them, “Come to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam.”

^41:7And it was so, when they came into the midst of the city, that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah slew them, and cast them into the midst of the pit, he and the men that were with him. ^41:8But ten men were found among them that said to Ishmael, “Do not kill us: for we have treasures in the field, of wheat, of barley, of oil, and of honey.” So he forbore, and did not slay them among their brethren. ^41:9Now the pit in which Ishmael had cast all the dead bodies of the men, whom he had slain because of Gedaliah, was it which Asa the king had made for fear of Baasha king of Israel; and Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with the slain.

¶Complement   The captains of the armies of Judah rescued the people of Mizpeh from captivity to Ishmael (41:10 - 18)

^41:10Then Ishmael carried away captive all the remainder of the people that were in Mizpah, even the king's daughters, and all the people that remained in Mizpah, whom Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard had committed to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam; and Ishmael the son of Nethaniah carried them away captive; and departed to go over to the Ammonites.

^41:11But when Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the armies that were with him, heard of all the evil that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done, ^41:12then they took all the men, and went to fight with Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and found him by the great pool that is in Gibeon.

^41:13Now it came to pass, that when all the people who were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the armies that were with him, then they were glad. ^41:14So all the people that Ishmael had carried away captive from Mizpah turned around and returned, and went to Johanan the son of Kareah.

^41:15But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escaped from Johanan with eight men, and went to the Ammonites.

^41:16Then Johanan the son of Kareah and all the captains of the armies that were with him took all the remainder of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, from Mizpah, after he had slain Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, even mighty men of war, and the women, the children, and the eunuchs, whom he had brought again from Gibeon; ^41:17and they departed, and dwelt in the habitation of Chimham, which is by Bethlehem, to go to enter into Egypt, ^41:18because of the Chaldeans: for they were afraid of them, because Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had slain Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon made governor in the land.

¶Unique   Jehovah warned the captains of the armies through Jeremiah not to go into Egypt, but they rejected the Word of God (42:1 - 43:7)

^42:1Then all the captains of the armies, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least even to the greatest, came near; ^42:2and they said to Jeremiah the Prophet, “Please, let our supplication be accepted before you, and pray for us to Jehovah your God, even for all this remnant: for we are left but a few of many, as your eyes do behold us, ^42:3so that Jehovah your God may show us the way that we may walk in, and the thing that we may do.”

^42:4Then Jeremiah the Prophet said to them, “I have heard you; behold, I will pray to Jehovah your God according to your words; and it shall come to pass, that whatsoever thing Jehovah shall answer you, I will declare it to you; I will keep back nothing from you.” ^42:5Then they said to Jeremiah, “Jehovah is a true and faithful witness between us, if we do not do even according to all things for which Jehovah your God shall send you to us. ^42:6Whether it is good, or whether it is evil, we will obey the voice of Jehovah our God, to whom we send you, so that it may be well with us, when we obey the voice of Jehovah our God.”

^42:7And it came to pass after ten days, that the Word of Jehovah came to Jeremiah. ^42:8Then he called Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the armies which were with him, and all the people from the least even to the greatest; ^42:9and he said to them, “Thus says Jehovah, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your supplication before him: ^42:10‘‘If you will continue to remain in this land, then will I build you, and not pull you down; and I will plant you, and not pluck you up: for I have changed my mind of the evil that I have done to you. ^42:11Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom you are afraid; do not be afraid of him,’ says Jehovah, ‘for I am with you to save you, and to deliver you from his hand. ^42:12And I will show mercies to you, that he may have mercy upon you, and cause you to return to your own land.’’”

^42:13“But if you say, ‘We will not dwell in this land; neither obey the voice of Jehovah your God’, ^42:14saying, ‘No; but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor have hunger of bread; and there will we dwell’; ^42:15and now therefore hear the Word of Jehovah, you remnant of Judah: ‘Thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘If you wholly set your faces to enter into Egypt, and go to sojourn there, then it shall come to pass, ^42:16that the sword, which you feared, shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine, of which you were afraid, shall follow close after you there in Egypt; and there shall you die. ^42:17So shall it be with all the men that set their faces to go into Egypt to sojourn there: they shall die by the sword, by famine, and by disease; and none of them shall remain or escape from the evil that I will bring upon them.’ ^42:18For thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘As my anger and my fury has been poured forth upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so shall my fury be poured forth upon you, when you shall enter into Egypt; and you shall be an oath, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach; and you shall not see this place anymore.’’ ^42:19Jehovah has said concerning you, O you remnant of Judah, ‘Do not go into Egypt!’ Know certainly that I have admonished you this day: ^42:20for you were insincere in your hearts, when you sent me to Jehovah your God, saying, ‘Pray for us to Jehovah our God; and according to all that Jehovah our God shall say, so declare to us, and we will do it.’ ^42:21And now I have this day declared it to you; but you have not obeyed the voice of Jehovah your God, nor any thing for which he has sent me to you. ^42:22Now therefore know certainly that you shall die by the sword, by famine, and by disease, in the place where you desire to go and to sojourn.”

^43:1And it came to pass, that when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking to all the people all the words of Jehovah their God, for which Jehovah their God had sent him to them, even all these words, ^43:2then spoke Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the proud men, saying to Jeremiah, “You speak falsely. Jehovah our God has not sent you to say, ‘Do not go into Egypt to sojourn there’; ^43:3but Baruch the son of Neriah incites you against us, in order to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they might put us to death, and carry us away captives into Babylon.” ^43:4So Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the armies, and all the people, did not obey the voice of Jehovah, to dwell in the land of Judah. ^43:5But Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the armies, took all the remnant of Judah, that had returned from all nations, where they had been driven, to dwell in the land of Judah: ^43:6even men, women, children, the king's daughters, and every person that Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the Prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah. ^43:7So they came into the land of Egypt, because they did not obey the voice of Jehovah; thus they came even to Tahpanhes.

^43:8Then the Word of Jehovah came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying, ^43:9“Take large stones in your hand, and hide them in the clay in the brick kiln, which is at the entry of Pharaoh's house in Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah; ^43:10and say to them, ‘Thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will set his throne upon these stones that I have hidden; and he shall spread his royal pavilion over them.

^43:11“‘‘And when he comes, he shall smite the land of Egypt; and deliver such as are for death to death, and such as are for captivity to captivity, and such as are for the sword to the sword. ^43:12And I will kindle a fire in the houses of the gods of Egypt; and he shall burn them, and carry them away captives. And he shall array himself with the land of Egypt, as a shepherd puts on his garment; and he shall go forth from there in peace. ^43:13He shall also break the images of Beth-shemesh, that are in the land of Egypt; and he shall burn the houses of the gods of the Egyptians with fire.’’”

^44:1The Word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews who dwell in the land of Egypt, who dwell at Migdol, at Tahpanhes, and at Noph, and in the country of Pathros, saying, ^44:2“Thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘You have seen all the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, and upon all the cities of Judah; and, behold, this day they are a desolation, and no man dwells in it, ^44:3because of their wickedness which they have committed to provoke me to anger, in that they went to burn incense, and to serve other gods, whom they did not know, neither they, you, nor your fathers. ^44:4Nevertheless, I sent to you all my servants the Prophets, rising early and sending them, saying, ‘Oh, do not do this abominable thing that I hate.’ ^44:5But they did not listen, nor incline their ear to turn from their wickedness, to not burn incense to other gods. ^44:6Therefore, my fury and my anger was poured forth, and was kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they are wasted and desolate, as at this day.’ ^44:7Now therefore thus says Jehovah, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Why do you commit this great evil against your own souls, to cut off from you man and woman, child and infant, out of Judah, to leave you none to remain, ^44:8in that you provoke me to wrath with the works of your hands, burning incense to other gods in the land of Egypt, where you have gone to dwell, that you might cut yourselves off, and that you might be a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth? ^44:9Have you forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, and the wickedness of the kings of Judah, and the wickedness of their wives, and your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives, which they have committed in the land of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem? ^44:10They are not humbled even until this day; neither have they feared, nor walked in my Law, nor in my Statutes, that I set before you and before your fathers.’ ^44:11Therefore thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, I will set my face against you for evil, and to cut off all Judah. ^44:12And I will take the remnant of Judah, that have set their faces to go into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, and they shall all be consumed, and fall in the land of Egypt. They shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine; they shall die, from the least even to the greatest, by the sword and by the famine. And they shall be an oath, an astonishment, a curse, and a reproach: ^44:13for I will punish them that dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, by the sword, by famine, and by disease, ^44:14so that none of the remnant of Judah, who have gone into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, shall escape or remain, that they should return into the land of Judah, to the land which they have a desire to return to dwell there: for none shall return but such as shall escape.’”

^44:15Then all the men who knew that their wives had burned incense to other gods, and all the women that stood by, a great multitude, even all the people that dwelt in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying, ^44:16“As for the Word that you have spoken to us in the Name of Jehovah, we will not listen to you. ^44:17But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goes forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done: we, our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then we had plenty of food, and were well, and saw no evil. ^44:18But since we ceased to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings to her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine. ^44:19And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven, and poured out drink offerings to her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings to her, without our men's knowledge?” ^44:20Then Jeremiah said to all the people, to the men, to the women, and to all the people who had given him that answer, saying, ^44:21“The incense that you burned in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, you, your fathers, your kings, your princes, and the people of the land, did not Jehovah remember them, and did it not come into his mind? ^44:22So that Jehovah could no longer bear, because of the evil of your doings, and because of the abominations which you have committed; therefore your land is a desolation, an astonishment, and a curse, without an inhabitant, as at this day. ^44:23Because you have burned incense, and because you have sinned against Jehovah, and have not obeyed the voice of Jehovah, nor walked in his Law, nor in his Statutes, nor in his Testimonies, therefore this evil has happened to you, as at this day.”

^44:24Moreover Jeremiah said to all the people, and to all the women, “Hear the Word of Jehovah, all Judah that are in the land of Egypt; ^44:25thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, ‘You and your wives have both spoken with your mouths, and fulfilled with your hand, saying, ‘We will surely perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings to her.’ You will surely accomplish your vows, and surely perform your vows.’ ^44:26Therefore hear the Word of Jehovah, all Judah that dwells in the land of Egypt: ‘‘Behold, I have sworn by my great Name,’ says Jehovah, ‘that my Name shall not be named anymore in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, ‘The Lord Jehovah lives.’ ^44:27Behold, I will watch over them for evil, and not for good; and all the men of Judah that are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine, until there is an end of them. ^44:28Yet a small number that escape the sword shall return out of the land of Egypt into the land of Judah; and all the remnant of Judah, that have gone into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, shall know whose words shall stand: mine, or theirs. ^44:29And this shall be a sign to you,’ says Jehovah, ‘that I will punish you in this place, that you may know that my words shall surely stand against you for evil’: ^44:30thus says Jehovah: ‘Behold, I will give Pharaoh-hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies, and into the hand of them that seek his life, as I gave Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, his enemy, and that sought his life.’’”

¶Complement   Jehovah comforted Baruch the son of Neriah that He would protect his life in the midst of his judgment upon Judah (45:1 - 5)

^45:1The Word that Jeremiah the Prophet spoke to Baruch the son of Neriah, when he had written these words in a Book at the mouth of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, saying, ^45:2“Jehovah the God of Israel says this to you, O Baruch: ^45:3‘You said, ‘Woe is me now! For Jehovah has added grief to my sorrow; I fainted in my sighing, and I find no rest.’’

^45:4“‘Thus shall you say to him, ‘Thus says Jehovah: ‘Behold, that which I have built will I break down; and that which I have planted will I pluck up, even this whole land.’’”

“^45:5‘‘And do you seek great things for yourself?

“‘‘Seek them not.

“‘‘For, behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh,’ says Jehovah. ‘But your life will I give to you for a prize in all places that you go.’’”

^39:1En el noveno año de Sedequías rey de Judá, en el mes décimo, vino Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia con todo su ejército contra Jerusalén, y la sitiaron.

^39:2Y en el año undécimo de Sedequías, en el mes cuarto, a los nueve días del mes, fue abierta brecha en el muro de la ciudad. ^39:3Y entraron todos los príncipes del rey de Babilonia, y asentaron a la puerta del medio: Nergal-sarezer, Samgar-nebo, Sarsequim, y Rabsaris, Nergal-sarezer, Rabmag, y todos los demás príncipes del rey de Babilonia.

^39:4Y sucedió que al verlos Sedequías rey de Judá y todos los hombres de guerra, huyeron y salieron de noche de la ciudad por el camino del huerto del rey, por la puerta entre los dos muros; y el rey salió por el camino del desierto.

^39:5Pero el ejército de los caldeos los siguió, y alcanzaron a Sedequías en los llanos de Jericó.

Y cuando le capturaron, y le hicieron subir a Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia, a Ribla, en tierra de Hamat, y le sentenció. ^39:6Y degolló el rey de Babilonia a los hijos de Sedequías en su presencia en Ribla, haciendo asimismo degollar el rey de Babilonia a todos los nobles de Judá. ^39:7Y sacó los ojos al rey Sedequías, y le aprisionó con grillos para llevarle a Babilonia. ^39:8Y los caldeos prendieron fuego a la casa del rey y a las casas del pueblo, y derribaron los muros de Jerusalén.

¶Lo opuesto   Jehová prometió liberar a Ebedmelec del ejército de Babilonia y proteger su vida (39:9 - 18)

^39:9Y al resto del pueblo que había quedado en la ciudad, y a los que se habían adherido a él, con todo el resto del pueblo que había quedado, los trasportó a Babilonia Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia. ^39:10Pero Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, hizo quedar en tierra de Judá a los más pobres del vulgo que no tenían nada, y en ese tiempo les dio viñas y campos.

^39:11Y Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia había ordenado a Nabuzaradán capitán de la guardia, acerca de Jeremías, diciendo, ^39:12“Tómale, y mira por él, y no le hagas mal alguno; sino que harás con él como él te dijere”. ^39:13Envió por tanto Nabuzaradán capitán de la guardia, y Nabusazbán, Rabsaris, y Nergal-sarezer, y Rabmag, y todos los príncipes del rey de Babilonia; ^39:14enviaron entonces, y tomaron a Jeremías del patio de la cárcel, y lo entregaron a Gedalías hijo de Ahicam, hijo de Safán, para que lo llevase a casa; y vivió entre el pueblo.

^39:15Y la Palabra de Jehová vino a Jeremías, estando preso en el patio de la cárcel, diciendo, ^39:16“Ve, y habla a Ebedmelec etíope, diciendo, ‘Así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, ‘He aquí yo traigo mis palabras sobre esta ciudad para mal, y no para bien; y se cumplirán en aquel día en presencia tuya.

^39:17“‘Pero en aquel día yo te libraré,’ dice Jehová, ‘y no serás entregado en mano de aquellos a quienes tú temes: ^39:18porque ciertamente te libraré, y no caerás por la espada.

“‘Pero tu vida te será por despojo: porque pusiste tu confianza en mí,’ dice Jehová”.

§El complemento   Cuerpo: Ismael asesinó a Gedaliah, llevando al remanente de los judíos a huir a Egipto, en contra de la advertencia de Jehová (40:1 - 43:7)

^40:1Palabra que vino a Jeremías de parte de Jehová, después que Nabuzaradán capitán de la guardia le envió desde Ramá, cuando le tomó estando atado con esposas entre todos los que fueron llevados cautivos de Jerusalén y de Judá que fueron desterrados a Babilonia.

^40:2Tomó pues, el capitán de la guardia a Jeremías, y le dijo, “Jehová tu Dios habló este mal contra este lugar. ^40:3Y Jehová lo ha traído y hecho según lo había dicho: porque pecasteis contra Jehová, y no oísteis su voz, por eso os ha venido esto.

^40:4Y ahora yo te he soltado hoy de las esposas que tenías en tus manos. Si te parece bien venir conmigo a Babilonia, ven, y yo miraré por ti; pero si no te parece bien venir conmigo a Babilonia, déjalo; mira, toda la tierra está delante de ti; ve a donde mejor y más cómodo te pareciere ir”.

^40:5Y aún no se había vuelto él, cuando le dijo, “Vuélvete a Gedalías hijo de Ahicam, hijo de Safán, al cual el rey de Babilonia ha puesto sobre todas las ciudades de Judá, y vive con él en medio del pueblo; o ve a donde te pareciere más cómodo ir”. Y el capitán de la guardia le dio provisiones y un presente, y le despidió.

^40:6Se fue entonces Jeremías a Gedalías hijo de Ahicam, a Mizpa, y moró con él en medio del pueblo que había quedado en la tierra.

¶Lo opuesto   Los capitanes del ejército de Judá advirtieron a Gedaliah que Ismael vendría a matarlo, pero no les creyó (40:7 - 16)

^40:7Y como oyeron todos los príncipes del ejército que estaba por el campo, ellos y sus hombres, que el rey de Babilonia había puesto a Gedalías hijo de Ahicam sobre la tierra, y que le había encomendado los hombres, y las mujeres, y los niños, y los pobres de la tierra, que no fueron llevados cautivos a Babilonia. ^40:8Vinieron luego a Gedalías en Mizpa, esto es, Ismael hijo de Netanías, y Johanán y Jonatán hijos de Carea, y Seraías hijo de Tanhumet, y los hijos de Efi netofatita, y Jezanías hijo de un maacatita, ellos y sus hombres. ^40:9Y les juró Gedalías hijo de Ahicam, hijo de Safán, a ellos y a sus hombres, diciendo, “No tengáis temor de servir a los caldeos; habitad en la tierra, y servid al rey de Babilonia, y tendréis bien. ^40:10Y he aquí que yo habito en Mizpa, para estar delante de los caldeos que vendrán a nosotros; pero ustedes, tomad el vino, los frutos del verano y el aceite, y ponedlo en vuestros almacenes, y quedaos en vuestras ciudades que habéis tomado”.

^40:11Asimismo todos los Judíos que estaban en Moab, y entre los hijos de Amón, y en Edom, y los que estaban en todas las tierras, cuando oyeron decir como el rey de Babilonia había dejado un remanente en Judá, y que había puesto sobre ellos a Gedalías hijo de Ahicam, hijo de Safán, ^40:12todos estos Judíos regresaron entonces de todos los lugares adonde habían sido echados, y vinieron a tierra de Judá, a Gedalías en Mizpa; y tomaron vino y muchísima fruta de verano.

^40:13Y Johanán, hijo de Carea, y todos los príncipes de la gente de guerra que estaban en el campo, vinieron a Gedalías en Mizpa, ^40:14y le dijeron, “¿No sabes de cierto como Baalis, rey de los hijos de Amón, ha enviado a Ismael hijo de Netanías, para matarte?”. Pero Gedalías hijo de Ahicam no les creyó.

^40:15Entonces Johanán hijo de Carea habló a Gedalías en secreto, en Mizpa, diciendo, “Yo iré ahora, y heriré a Ismael hijo de Netanías, y ningún hombre lo sabrá. ¿Por qué te ha de matar, y todos los Judíos que se han reunido a ti se dispersarán, y perecerá el resto de Judá?”.

^40:16Pero Gedalías hijo de Ahicam dijo a Johanán hijo de Carea, “No hagas esto: porque es falso lo que tú dices de Ismael”.

^41:1Y aconteció en el mes séptimo, que vino Ismael hijo de Netanías, hijo de Elisama, de la simiente real, y algunos príncipes del rey, y diez hombres con él, a Gedalías hijo de Ahicam en Mizpa; y juntos comieron pan allí en Mizpa.

^41:2Y se levantó Ismael hijo de Netanías, y los diez hombres que con él estaban, e hirieron a espada a Gedalías hijo de Ahicam, hijo de Safán, matando así a aquel a quien el rey de Babilonia había puesto sobre la tierra.

^41:3Asimismo hirió Ismael a todos los Judíos que estaban con él, con Gedalías en Mizpa, y a los soldados caldeos que allí se hallaron.

^41:4Sucedió además, un día después que mató a Gedalías, cuando nadie lo sabía aún, ^41:5que venían unos hombres de Siquem y de Silo y de Samaria, ochenta hombres, raída la barba, y rotas las ropas, y arañados y traían en sus manos ofrenda y perfume para llevar a la Casa de Jehová. ^41:6Y de Mizpa les salió al encuentro, llorando, Ismael hijo de Netanías; y aconteció que como los encontró, les dijo, “Venid a Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam”.

^41:7Y fue que cuando llegaron al medio de la ciudad, Ismael hijo de Netanías los degolló, y los echó dentro de una cisterna, él y los hombres que con él estaban. ^41:8Pero entre aquellos fueron hallados diez hombres que dijeron a Ismael, “No nos mates: porque tenemos en el campo tesoros de trigos, y cebadas, y aceite, y miel”. Y los dejó, y no los mató entre sus hermanos. ^41:9Y la cisterna en que echó Ismael todos los cadáveres de los hombres que él había matado a causa de Gedalías, era la misma que había hecho el rey Asa a causa de Baasa, rey de Israel; la llenó de muertos Ismael, hijo de Netanías.

¶El complemento   Los capitanes de los ejércitos de Judá rescataron al pueblo de Mizpa del cautiverio a Ismael (41:10 - 18)

^41:10Después Ismael llevó cautivo a todo el resto del pueblo que estaba en Mizpa; a las hijas del rey y a todo el pueblo que en Mizpa había quedado, el cual Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, había encargado a Gedalías hijo de Ahicam. Los llevó, pues, cautivos Ismael hijo de Netanías, y se fue para pasarse a los hijos de Amón.

^41:11Y oyó Johanán hijo de Carea, y todos los príncipes de la gente de guerra que estaban con él, todo el mal que había hecho Ismael, hijo de Netanías. ^41:12Entonces tomaron todos los hombres, y fueron a pelear con Ismael hijo de Netanías, y lo hallaron junto al gran estanque que está en Gabaón.

^41:13Y aconteció que como todo el pueblo que estaba con Ismael vio a Johanán hijo de Carea, y a todos los príncipes de la gente de guerra que estaban con él, se alegraron. ^41:14Y todo el pueblo que Ismael había traído cautivo de Mizpa, se tornaron, y volvieron, y se fueron a Johanán hijo de Carea.

^41:15Pero Ismael hijo de Netanías se escapó delante de Johanán con ocho hombres, y se fue a los hijos de Amón.

^41:16Y Johanán hijo de Carea, y todos los príncipes de la gente de guerra que con él estaban, tomaron todo el resto del pueblo que habían recobrado de Ismael hijo de Netanías, de Mizpa, después que hirió a Gedalías hijo de Ahicam: hombres de guerra, y mujeres, y niños, y los eunucos que Johanán había hecho tornar de Gabaón; ^41:17y fueron y habitaron en Gerut-quimam, que es cerca de Belén, a fin de partir y meterse en Egipto, ^41:18por causa de los caldeos; pues temían de ellos: porque Ismael hijo de Netanías había matado a Gedalías hijo de Ahicam, al cual el rey de Babilonia había puesto sobre la tierra.

¶Único   Jehová advirtió a los capitanes de los ejércitos a través de Jeremías que no entraran a Egipto, pero rechazaron la Palabra de Dios (42:1 - 43:7)

^42:1Y vinieron todos los capitanes de la gente de guerra, y Johanán hijo de Carea, y Jezanías hijo de Osaías, y todo el pueblo desde el menor hasta el mayor, ^42:2y dijeron al Profeta Jeremías, “Sea acepta nuestra súplica delante de ti, y ora por nosotros a Jehová tu Dios, por todo este remanente (pues de muchos hemos quedado unos pocos, como nos ven tus ojos), ^42:3para que Jehová tu Dios nos enseñe el camino por donde vayamos, y lo que hemos de hacer”.

^42:4Y el Profeta Jeremías les dijo, “Ya he oído. He aquí que voy a orar a Jehová vuestro Dios, como habéis dicho; y será que todo lo que Jehová os respondiere, os lo declararé; no os reservaré palabra”. ^42:5Y dijeron a Jeremías, “Jehová sea testigo entre nosotros de la verdad y de la lealtad, si no hiciéremos conforme a todo aquello para lo cual Jehová tu Dios te enviare a nosotros. ^42:6Sea bueno, o sea malo, a la voz de Jehová nuestro Dios, al cual te enviamos, obedeceremos; para que, obedeciendo a la voz de Jehová nuestro Dios, tengamos bien”.

^42:7Y aconteció que al cabo de diez días vino Palabra de Jehová a Jeremías. ^42:8Y llamó a Johanán hijo de Carea, y a todos los capitanes de la gente de guerra que con él estaban, y a todo el pueblo desde el menor hasta el mayor; ^42:9y les dijo, “Así ha dicho Jehová Dios de Israel, al cual me enviasteis para presentar vuestras súplicas delante de él: ^42:10‘‘Si os quedareis quietos en esta tierra, os edificaré, y no os destruiré; os plantaré, y no os arrancaré: porque arrepentido estoy del mal que os he hecho. ^42:11No temáis de la presencia del rey de Babilonia, del cual tenéis temor; no temáis de su presencia,’ ha dicho Jehová, ‘porque con ustedes estoy yo para salvaros y libraros de su mano. ^42:12Y os daré misericordias, y tendrá misericordia de ustedes, y os hará volver a vuestra tierra’’.

^42:13Pero si dijereis, ‘No moraremos en esta tierra, no obedeciendo así a la voz de Jehová vuestro Dios’, ^42:14y diciendo, ‘No, antes nos entraremos en tierra de Egipto, en la cual no veremos guerra, ni oiremos sonido de trompeta, ni tendremos hambre de pan, y allá moraremos’; ^42:15ahora por eso, oíd la Palabra de Jehová, remanente de Judá: ‘Así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, ‘Si ustedes volviereis vuestros rostros para entrar en Egipto, y entrareis para peregrinar allá, ^42:16entonces sucederá que la espada que teméis, os alcanzará allí en tierra de Egipto, y el hambre de que tenéis temor, allá en Egipto se os pegará; y allí moriréis. ^42:17Será, pues, que todos los hombres que tornaren sus rostros para entrarse en Egipto, para peregrinar allí, morirán a espada, de hambre, y de pestilencia; no habrá de ellos quien quede vivo, ni quien escape delante del mal que traeré yo sobre ellos’. ^42:18Porque así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, ‘Como se derramó mi enojo y mi ira sobre los moradores de Jerusalén, así se derramará mi ira sobre ustedes, cuando entrareis en Egipto; y seréis por juramento y por espanto, y por maldición y por afrenta; y no veréis más este lugar’’. ^42:19Jehová habló sobre ustedes, oh remanente de Judá, ‘¡No entréis en Egipto!’ Sabed por cierto que os aviso hoy. ^42:20¿Por qué hicisteis errar vuestras almas? Porque ustedes me enviasteis a Jehová vuestro Dios, diciendo, ‘Ora por nosotros a Jehová nuestro Dios; y conforme a todas las cosas que Jehová nuestro Dios dijere, háznoslo saber así, y lo pondremos por obra’. ^42:21Y os lo he denunciado hoy, y no habéis obedecido a la voz de Jehová vuestro Dios, ni a todas las cosas por las cuales me envió a ustedes. ^42:22Ahora, pues, sabed de cierto que moriréis a espada, de hambre y de pestilencia, en el lugar donde deseasteis entrar para peregrinar allí”.

^43:1Y aconteció que como Jeremías acabó de hablar a todo el pueblo todas las palabras de Jehová su Dios, esto es, todas las palabras por las cuales Jehová su Dios le había enviado a ellos, ^43:2dijo Azarías hijo de Osaías, y Johanán hijo de Carea, y todos los varones soberbios dijeron a Jeremías, “Mentira dices; no te ha enviado Jehová nuestro Dios para decir, ‘No entréis en Egipto a peregrinar allí’; ^43:3sino que Baruc, hijo de Nerías te incita contra nosotros, para entregarnos en mano de los caldeos, para matarnos y para hacernos trasportar a Babilonia”. ^43:4No obedeció, pues, Johanán hijo de Carea, y todos los capitanes de la gente de guerra, y todo el pueblo, a la voz de Jehová para quedarse en tierra de Judá; ^43:5sino que tomó Johanán hijo de Carea, y todos los capitanes de la gente de guerra, a todo el remanente de Judá que había vuelto de todas las naciones adonde habían sido echados, para habitar en la tierra de Judá; ^43:6a hombres y mujeres y niños, y a las hijas del rey, y a toda alma que Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, había dejado con Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam hijo de Safán, y al Profeta Jeremías y a Baruc, hijo de Nerías; ^43:7y entraron en tierra de Egipto: porque no obedecieron a la voz de Jehová; y llegaron hasta Tafnes.

^43:8Y vino Palabra de Jehová a Jeremías en Tafnes, diciendo, ^43:9“Toma con tu mano piedras grandes, y escóndelas en el barro, en el enladrillado que está a la puerta de la casa de Faraón en Tafnes, a vista de los hombres de Judá; ^43:10y diles, ‘Así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, ‘He aquí que yo enviaré y tomaré a Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia, mi siervo, y pondré su trono sobre estas piedras que he escondido, y extenderá su pabellón sobre ellas.

^43:11“‘‘Y vendrá, y herirá la tierra de Egipto; los que a muerte, a muerte, y los que a cautiverio, a cautiverio, y los que a espada, a espada. ^43:12Y yo pondré a fuego las casas de los dioses de Egipto; y las quemará, y a ellos llevará cautivos; y él se vestirá la tierra de Egipto, como el pastor se viste su capa, y saldrá de allá en paz. ^43:13Además, quebrará las estatuas de Bet-semes, que está en tierra de Egipto, y las casas de los dioses de Egipto quemará a fuego’’”.

^44:1Palabra que vino a Jeremías acerca de todos los Judíos que moraban en la tierra de Egipto, que moraban en Migdol, y en Tafnes, y en Nof, y en tierra de Patros, diciendo, ^44:2“Así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, ‘Ustedes habéis visto todo el mal que traje sobre Jerusalén y sobre todas las ciudades de Judá; y he aquí que ellas están el día de hoy asoladas, y ni hay en ellas morador; ^44:3a causa de la maldad que ellos cometieron para hacerme enojar, yendo a ofrecer incienso, honrando a dioses ajenos que ellos no habían conocido, ni ustedes, ni vuestros padres. ^44:4Y envié a ustedes a todos mis siervos los Profetas, madrugando y enviándolos, diciendo, ‘No hagáis ahora esta cosa abominable que yo aborrezco’. ^44:5Pero no oyeron ni inclinaron su oído para convertirse de su maldad, para no ofrecer incienso a dioses ajenos. ^44:6Se derramó, por tanto, mi furor y mi ira, y se encendió en las ciudades de Judá y en las calles de Jerusalén, y fueron destruidas y desoladas, como están hoy’. ^44:7Ahora pues, así dice Jehová, el Dios de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: ‘¿Por qué cometes este gran mal contra tus propias almas, cortarle a usted hombre y mujer, niño e infante, fuera de Judá, dejarte ninguno a permanecer, ^44:8en que me provocas a ira con las obras de tus manos, quemando incienso a otros dioses en la tierra de Egipto, donde has ido a habitar, que os podéis cortar ustedes mismos apagado, y que ustedes podríais ser una maldición y un oprobio entre todas las naciones de la tierra? ^44:9¿Has olvidado la maldad de tus padres, la maldad de los reyes de Judá, la maldad de sus mujeres, tu propia maldad y la maldad de tus mujeres, cual ellos han cometido en la tierra de Judá y en el calles de Jerusalén? ^44:10No se han humillado hasta el día de hoy, ni han tenido temor, ni han caminado en mi Ley, ni en mis Estatutos que puse delante de ustedes y delante de vuestros padres’. ^44:11Por tanto, así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, ‘He aquí que yo pongo mi rostro contra ustedes para mal, y para destruir a todo Judá. ^44:12Y tomaré el remanente de Judá que puso su rostro para entrar en la tierra de Egipto para morar allí, y en la tierra de Egipto serán todos consumidos. Caerán a espada y por el hambre serán consumidos; por la espada y el hambre morirán desde el menor hasta el mayor; y serán causa de blasfemia, de espanto, de maldición y de oprobio. ^44:13Pues castigaré a los que moran en tierra de Egipto, como castigué a Jerusalén, con espada, y con hambre, y con pestilencia. ^44:14Y del remanente de Judá que entraron en tierra de Egipto para morar allí, no habrá quien escape, ni quien quede vivo, para volver a la tierra de Judá, por la cual suspiran ellos por volver para habitar allí: porque no volverán sino los que escaparen’”.

^44:15Entonces todos los hombres que sabían que sus mujeres habían quemado incienso a otros dioses, y a todas las mujeres que estaban allí presentes, una gran multitud, aun toda la gente que moraba en la tierra de Egipto, en Pathros, respondieron Jeremías, diciendo: ^44:16“En cuanto a la Palabra que nos has hablado en el Nombre de Jehová, no te escucharemos; ^44:17pero ciertamente haremos todo que ha salido de nuestra boca, para quemar incienso a la reina del cielo y derramar libaciones a ella, como lo hemos hecho: nosotros, nuestros padres, nuestros reyes y nuestros príncipes, en las ciudades de Judá y en las calles de Jerusalén: porque entonces teníamos mucha comida, y estábamos bien, y no vimos ningún mal. ^44:18Pero ya que hemos dejado de quemar incienso a la reina del cielo y de derramarle libaciones, nos han faltado todas las cosas, y hemos sido consumidos por la espada y por la hambruna. ^44:19Y cuando quemábamos incienso a la reina del cielo, y le derramamos libaciones, ¿le hicimos pasteles para adorarla, y le derramamos libaciones sin que lo supieran nuestros hombres?”. ^44:20Y habló Jeremías a todo el pueblo, a los hombres y a las mujeres, y a todo el vulgo que le había respondido esto, diciendo, ^44:21“¿No se ha acordado Jehová, y no ha venido a su memoria el incienso que ofrecisteis en las ciudades de Judá, y en las plazas de Jerusalén, ustedes y vuestros padres, vuestros reyes y vuestros príncipes, y el pueblo de la tierra? ^44:22Y no pudo soportar más Jehová a causa de la maldad de vuestras obras, a causa de las abominaciones que habíais hecho; por tanto vuestra tierra fue en asolamiento, y en espanto, y en maldición, hasta no quedar morador, como hoy. ^44:23Porque habéis quemado incienso y pecasteis contra Jehová, y no obedecisteis a la voz de Jehová, ni anduvisteis en su Ley, ni en sus Estatutos, ni en sus Testimonios; por tanto ha venido sobre ustedes este mal, como en este día”.

^44:24Y dijo Jeremías a todo el pueblo, y a todas las mujeres, “Oíd Palabra de Jehová, todos los de Judá que estáis en tierra de Egipto: ^44:25así habla Jehová de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel, diciendo, ‘Ustedes y vuestras esposas hablasteis con vuestras bocas, y con vuestras manos lo ejecutasteis, diciendo, ‘Cumpliremos efectivamente nuestros votos que hicimos, de ofrecer incienso a la reina del cielo y de derramarle libaciones’. Confirmáis a la verdad vuestros votos, y ponéis vuestros votos por obra’. ^44:26Por tanto, oíd Palabra de Jehová, todo Judá que habitáis en tierra de Egipto, ‘‘He aquí he jurado por mi grande Nombre,’ dice Jehová, que mi Nombre no será más invocado en toda la tierra de Egipto por boca de ningún hombre judío, diciendo, ‘Vive el Señor Jehová’. ^44:27He aquí que yo velo sobre ellos para mal, y no para bien; y todos los hombres de Judá que están en la tierra de Egipto, serán consumidos a espada y de hambre, hasta que perezcan del todo. ^44:28Sin embargo, un pequeño número de ellos que escapan de la espada regresarán desde la tierra de Egipto a la tierra de Judá; y todo el remanente de Judá que ha entrado en la tierra de Egipto para residir allí, sabrán de quién cuyas palabras perdurarán: las mías o las de ellos. ^44:29Y esto tendréis por señal,’ dice Jehová, ‘de que en este lugar os visito, para que sepáis que de cierto permanecerán mis palabras para mal sobre ustedes’. ^44:30Así dice Jehová, ‘He aquí que yo entrego a Faraón Hofra rey de Egipto en mano de sus enemigos, en mano de los que buscan su vida, como entregué a Sedequías rey de Judá en mano de Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia, su enemigo que buscaba su vida’’”.

¶El complemento   Jehová consoló a Baruc, hijo de Neriah, de que protegería su vida en medio de su juicio sobre Judá (45:1 - 5)

^45:1Palabra que habló el Profeta Jeremías a Baruc hijo de Nerías, cuando escribía en el libro estas palabras de boca de Jeremías, en el año cuarto de Joacim hijo de Josías, rey de Judá, diciendo, ^45:2“Así dice Jehová Dios de Israel, a ti, oh Baruc: ^45:3‘Tú dijiste, ‘¡Ay de mí ahora! Porque Jehová ha añadido tristeza a mi dolor; fatigado estoy de mi gemir, y no hallo descanso’’.

^45:4“‘Así le dirás, ‘Así dice Jehová: He aquí que yo destruyo lo que edifiqué, y arranco lo que planté, y toda esta tierra’’”.

“^45:5‘‘¿Y tú buscas para ti grandes cosas?

“‘‘No las busques.

“‘‘Porque he aquí que yo traigo mal sobre toda carne,’ dice Jehová. ‘Pero su vida, le daré a usted por un premio en todos los lugares a los que vas’’”.
