Jeremiah, Chapter 2.2: Jehovah will destroy the Kingdom of Judah by the Babylonians (34:1 - 38:28)

Introduction: Zedekiah would become a slave to the king of Babylon; Jehovah condemned the Jews for not freeing their slaves (34:1 - 22)

^34:3“‘‘And you shall not escape out of his hand, but shall surely be taken, and delivered into his hand.

“‘‘And your eyes shall behold the eyes of the king of Babylon, and he shall speak with you mouth to mouth, and you shall go to Babylon.’’”

^34:4“Yet hear the Word of Jehovah, O Zedekiah king of Judah; Jehovah says this of you: ‘You shall not die by the sword, ^34:5but you shall die in peace. And with the burnings of your fathers, the former kings who were before you, so shall they burn odors for you; and they will lament you, saying, ‘Ah lord!’, because I have pronounced the Word,’ says Jehovah.”

^34:6Then Jeremiah the Prophet spoke all these words to Zedekiah king of Judah in Jerusalem, ^34:7when the king of Babylon's army fought against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Judah that were left: against Lachish, and against Azekah, because these fortified cities remained of the cities of Judah.

¶Opposite   Jehovah condemned the Jews in Jerusalem for breaking their covenant to free their slaves (34:8 - 22)

^34:8This is the Word that came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, after king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people who were at Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty to them, ^34:9that every man should let his manservant, and every man his maidservant, being a Hebrew or a Hebrewess, go free; and that no one should serve himself of them, namely, of a Jew his brother.

^34:10Now when all the princes, and all the people, who had entered into the covenant, heard that everyone should let his manservant, and everyone his maidservant, go free, that no one should serve themselves of them anymore, then they obeyed, and let them go. ^34:11But afterward they changed their minds, and caused the menservants and the maidservants, whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for menservants and for maidservants.

^34:12Therefore the Word of Jehovah came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying, ^34:13“Thus says Jehovah, the God of Israel: ‘I made a Covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of menservants, saying, ^34:14‘At the end of seven years let go every man his brother a Hebrew, who has been sold to you; and when he has served you six years, you shall let him go free from you’; but your fathers did not listen to me; neither did they incline their ear.

^34:15“‘And you had now turned, and had done right in my sight, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbor; and you had made a covenant before me in the House which is called by my Name. ^34:16But you turned and polluted my Name, and caused every man his manservant, and every man his maidservant, whom you had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be for menservants and for maidservants to you.’

^34:17“‘Therefore thus says Jehovah: ‘You have not listened to me, in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother, and every man to his neighbor; therefore behold, I proclaim a liberty for you,’ says Jehovah, ‘to the sword, to disease, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth. ^34:18And I will give the men that have transgressed my covenant, which have not performed the words of the covenant which they had made before me, when they cut the calf in two, and passed between its parts: ^34:19the princes of Judah, the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, the priests, and all the people of the land, who passed between the parts of the calf; ^34:20I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life; and their dead bodies shall be for food to the birds of the heaven and to the beasts of the earth. ^34:21And Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes will I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon's army, which have gone up from you. ^34:22Behold, I will command,’ says Jehovah, ‘and cause them to return to this city; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire; and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation without an inhabitant.’”

^35:1The Word which came to Jeremiah from Jehovah in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, saying, ^35:2“Go to the house of the Rechabites, and speak to them, and bring them into the House of Jehovah, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.”

^35:3Then I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, the son of Habaziniah, and his brethren, and all his sons, and the whole house of the Rechabites; ^35:4and I brought them into the House of Jehovah, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan, the son of Igdaliah, a man of God, which was by the chamber of the princes, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah the son of Shallum, the keeper of the door; ^35:5and I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites bowls full of wine, and cups; and I said to them, “Drink wine.” ^35:6But they said, “We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, ‘You shall drink no wine, not you, nor your sons forever; ^35:7neither shall you build a house, nor sow seed, nor plant vineyard, nor have any; but all your days you shall dwell in tents, so that you may live many days in the land where you are strangers.’ ^35:8Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that he has charged us, to drink no wine all our days: we, our wives, our sons, nor our daughters; ^35:9nor to build houses for us to dwell in; neither have we vineyard, nor field, nor seed; ^35:10but we have dwelt in tents, and have obeyed, and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us. ^35:11But it came to pass, when Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came up into the land, that we said, ‘Come, and let us go to Jerusalem for fear of the army of the Chaldeans, and for fear of the army of the Syrians’; so we dwell at Jerusalem.”

^35:12Then the Word of Jehovah came to Jeremiah, saying, ^35:13“Thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, ’’Will you not receive instruction to listen to my words?’ says Jehovah. ^35:14‘The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, that he commanded his sons not to drink wine, are performed: for until this day they drink none, but obey their father's command. Notwithstanding, I have spoken to you, rising early and speaking; but you did not listen to me. ^35:15I have also sent to you all my servants the Prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, ‘Return now every man from his evil way, and amend your doings, and go not after other gods to serve them, and you shall dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your fathers’; but you have not inclined your ear, nor listened to me.’

^35:16“‘‘Because the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the command of their father, which he commanded them; but this people has not listened to me, ^35:17therefore thus says Jehovah, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them, because I have spoken to them, but they have not listened; and I have called to them, but they have not answered.’’”

^35:18And Jeremiah said to the house of the Rechabites, “Thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Because you have obeyed the command of Jonadab your father; and kept all his precepts, and done according to all that he has commanded you’, ^35:19therefore thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me forever.’”

¶Complement   Jeremiah recorded all of the words that Jehovah had spoken to him in a scroll; and he sent his servant to read it to the people of Jerusalem (36:1 - 15)

^36:1And it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, that this Word came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying, ^36:2“Take a scroll of a Book, and write in it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel, and against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I first spoke to you, from the days of Josiah, even until this day. ^36:3It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I purpose to do to them, that they may turn every man from his evil way, that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.”

^36:4Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah; and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of Jehovah, which he had spoken to him, upon a scroll of a Book. ^36:5And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, “I am shut up; I cannot go into the House of Jehovah. ^36:6Therefore go, and read in the scroll, which you have written from my mouth, the words of Jehovah in the hearing of the people in Jehovah's House upon the fasting day; and also you shall read them in the hearing of all Judah that come out of their cities. ^36:7It may be they will present their supplication before Jehovah, and will turn every one from his evil way: for great is the anger and the fury that Jehovah has pronounced against this people.” ^36:8And Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the Prophet commanded him, reading in the Book the words of Jehovah in the House of Jehovah.

^36:9And it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, in the ninth month, that they proclaimed a fast before Jehovah to all the people in Jerusalem, and to all the people that came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem. ^36:10Then Baruch read in the Book the words of Jeremiah in the House of Jehovah, in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe, in the higher court, at the entry of the new gate of Jehovah's House, in the hearing of all the people.

^36:11When Michaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heard out of the Book all the words of Jehovah, ^36:12then he went down into the king's house, into the scribe's chamber; and, lo, all the princes sat there, even Elishama the scribe, and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the princes. ^36:13Then Michaiah declared to them all the words that he had heard, when Baruch read the Book in the hearing of the people.

^36:14Therefore all the princes sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying, “Take in your hand the scroll which you have read in the hearing of the people, and come.” So Baruch the son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand, and came to them. ^36:15And they said to him, “Sit down now, and read it in our hearing.” So Baruch read it in their hearing.

¶Complement   Jehoiakim the king burned the scroll of Jeremiah in the fire; and Jehovah pronounced judgment upon him (36:16 - 32)

^36:16Now it came to pass, when they had heard all the words, they were afraid both one and other, and said to Baruch, “We will surely tell the king of all these words.” ^36:17And they asked Baruch, saying, “Tell us now, how did you write all these words at his mouth?” ^36:18Then Baruch answered them, “He pronounced all these words to me with his mouth, and I wrote them with ink in the Book.” ^36:19Then the princes said to Baruch, “Go, hide yourself, you and Jeremiah; and let no man know where you are.”

^36:20And they went in to the king into the court, but they laid up the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe, and told all the words in the hearing of the king. ^36:21So the king sent Jehudi to bring the scroll; and he took it out of Elishama the scribe's chamber. And Jehudi read it in the hearing of the king, and in the hearing of all the princes who stood beside the king.

^36:22Now the king sat in the winter house in the ninth month; and there was a fire on the hearth burning before him. ^36:23And it came to pass, that when Jehudi had read three or four leaves, he cut it with the penknife, and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth, until all the scroll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth. ^36:24Yet they were not afraid, nor did they tear their garments, not the king, nor any of his servants that heard all these words. ^36:25Nevertheless Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had made intercession to the king that he would not burn the scroll; but he would not listen to them. ^36:26But the king commanded Jerahmeel the son of Hammelech, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to take prisoner Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the Prophet; but Jehovah hid them.

^36:27Then the Word of Jehovah came to Jeremiah, after the king had burned the scroll, and the words which Baruch wrote at the mouth of Jeremiah, saying, ^36:28“Take again another scroll; and write in it all the former words that were in the first scroll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah has burned. ^36:29And you shall say to Jehoiakim the king of Judah, ‘Thus says Jehovah: ‘You have burned this scroll, saying, ‘Why have you written in it, saying, ‘The king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land, and shall cause to cease from there man and beast’?’’’ ^36:30Therefore thus says Jehovah of Jehoiakim king of Judah: ‘He shall have no one to sit upon the throne of David. And his dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost. ^36:31And I will punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Judah, all the evil that I have pronounced against them; but they did not listen.’”

^36:32Then Jeremiah took another scroll, and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah; who wrote in it from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the Book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire; and there were added to them many similar words besides.

¶Opposite   After he became king, Zedekiah asked Jeremiah to pray for Judah (37:1 - 10)

^37:1And king Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah. ^37:2But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, gave heed to the words of Jehovah, which he spoke by the Prophet Jeremiah. ^37:3And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the Prophet Jeremiah, saying, “Pray now to Jehovah our God for us.”

^37:4Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people: for they had not put him into prison.

^37:5Then Pharaoh's army came forth out of Egypt; and when the Chaldeans that besieged Jerusalem heard news of them, they departed from Jerusalem.

^37:6Then the Word of Jehovah came to the Prophet Jeremiah, saying, ^37:7“Thus says Jehovah, the God of Israel: ‘Thus shall you say to the king of Judah, that sent you to me to inquire of me: ‘Behold, Pharaoh's army, who has come forth to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land. ^37:8And the Chaldeans shall come again, and fight against this city, and take it, and burn it with fire.’

^37:9“Thus says Jehovah: ‘Do not deceive yourselves, saying, ‘The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us’: for they shall not depart: ^37:10for though you had defeated the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet would they rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire.’”

¶Opposite   Jeremiah asked the king not to return him to the prison house of Jonathan the scribe (37:11 - 21)

^37:11And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans was broken up from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh's army, ^37:12then Jeremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to separate himself from there in the midst of the people.

^37:13And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he took Jeremiah the Prophet, saying, "You are defecting to the Chaldeans!” ^37:14Then Jeremiah said, “It is not true; I am not defecting to the Chaldeans.” But he did not listen to him, so Irijah took Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes. ^37:15Therefore the princes were angry with Jeremiah, and struck him; and they put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made that the prison.

^37:16When Jeremiah had entered into the dungeon, and into the cells, and Jeremiah had remained there many days, ^37:17then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out; and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, “Is there any Word from Jehovah?” And Jeremiah said, “There is; he said, ‘For you shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.’”

^37:18Moreover Jeremiah said to king Zedekiah, “What have I offended against you, or against your servants, or against this people, that you have put me in prison? ^37:19Now where are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, ‘The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land?’ ^37:20Now therefore, please hear, O my lord the king: please let my supplication be accepted before you, that you do not cause me to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.”

^37:21Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him a piece of bread out of the bakers' street daily, until all the bread in the city was gone. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

§Unique   Conclusion: Jeremiah was rescued from the dungeon and from the princes of Judah (38:1 - 28)

^38:1Then Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchiah, heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken to all the people, saying, ^38:2“Thus says Jehovah: ‘He that remains in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by disease; but he that goes forth to the Chaldeans shall live: for he shall have his life for a prize, and shall live.’ ^38:3Thus says Jehovah: ‘This city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon's army, which shall take it.’”

^38:4Therefore the princes said to the king, “Please, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakens the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words to them: for this man does not seek the welfare of this people, but the harm.” ^38:5Then Zedekiah the king said, “Behold, he is in your hand: for the king is not he that can do anything against you.” ^38:6Then they took Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that was in the court of the prison; and they let down Jeremiah with ropes. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mud; so Jeremiah sank in the mud.

^38:7Now when Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon (the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin), ^38:8Ebed-melech went forth out of the king's house, and spoke to the king, saying, ^38:9“My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the Prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is likely to die for hunger in the place where he is: for there is no more bread in the city.”

^38:10Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, “Take from here thirty men with you, and take up Jeremiah the Prophet out of the dungeon, before he dies.” ^38:11So Ebed-melech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took there old torn cloths and old rotten rags, and let them down by ropes into the dungeon to Jeremiah. ^38:12And Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, “Put now these old torn cloths and rotten rags under your armpits under the cords.” And Jeremiah did so. ^38:13So they pulled up Jeremiah with ropes, and took him up out of the dungeon.

And Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

¶Complement   Zedekiah the king rescued Jeremiah from the princes of Judah (38:14 - 28)

^38:14Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the Prophet to him into the third entry that is in the House of Jehovah; and the king said to Jeremiah, “I want to ask you something; hide nothing from me.” ^38:15Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I declare it to you, will you not surely put me to death? And if I give you counsel, will you not listen to me?” ^38:16So Zedekiah the king swore secretly to Jeremiah, saying, “As Jehovah lives, that made us this soul, I will not put you to death; neither will I give you into the hand of these men that seek your life.”

^38:17Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “Thus says Jehovah, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘If you will surrender to the king of Babylon's princes, then your soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and you shall live, and your family. ^38:18But if you will not surrender to the king of Babylon's princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and you shall not escape out of their hand.’” ^38:19And Zedekiah the king said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Jews that have fallen to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.” ^38:20But Jeremiah said, “They shall not deliver you. Please, obey the voice of Jehovah, which I speak to you, so shall it be well to you, and your soul shall live. ^38:21But if you refuse to surrender, this is the Word that Jehovah has shown me: ^38:22‘And, behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah's house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon's princes, and those women shall say, ‘Your close friends have misled you, and have prevailed against you; your feet are sunk in the mire, and they have turned away back.’ ^38:23So they shall bring out all your wives and your children to the Chaldeans; and you shall not escape out of their hand, but shall be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon; and you shall cause this city to be burned with fire.’”

^38:24Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Let no man know of these words, and you shall not die. ^38:25But if the princes hear that I have talked with you, and they come to you, and say to you, ‘Declare to us now what you have said to the king. Do not hide it from us, and we will not put you to death; also tell us what the king said to you’, ^38:26then you shall say to them, ‘I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan's house, to die there.’”

^38:27Then all the princes came to Jeremiah, and asked him; and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him: for the matter was not perceived.

^38:28So Jeremiah stayed in the court of the prison until the day that Jerusalem was taken, and he was there when Jerusalem was taken.

^34:1La Palabra de Jehová que vino a Jeremías (cuando Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia, y todo su ejército, y todos los reinos de la tierra del señorío de su mano, y todos los pueblos peleaban contra Jerusalén, y contra todas sus ciudades), diciendo, ^34:2“Así dice Jehová Dios de Israel: ‘Ve, y habla a Sedequías rey de Judá, y dile, ‘Así dice Jehová: He aquí yo entregaré esta ciudad en mano del rey de Babilonia, y la quemará con fuego’’.

^34:3“‘‘Y no escaparás tú de su mano, sino que de cierto serás apresado, y en su mano serás entregado.

“‘‘Y tus ojos verán los ojos del rey de Babilonia, y te hablará boca a boca, y tú irás a Babilonia’’”.

^34:4“Aun oye la Palabra de Jehová, oh Sedequías rey de Judá; así dice Jehová de ti, ‘No morirás a espada; 34:5pero en paz morirás, y como quemaron incienso por tus padres, los reyes primeros que fueron antes de ti, así quemarán por ti, y te endecharán, diciendo, ‘¡Ay, señor!’, porque yo he hablado la Palabra,’ dice Jehová”.

^34:6Entonces el Profeta Jeremías habló a Sedequías rey de Judá todas estas palabras en Jerusalén. ^34:7Y el ejército del rey de Babilonia peleaba contra Jerusalén, y contra todas las ciudades de Judá que habían quedado, contra Laquis, y contra Azeca: porque de las ciudades fortificadas de Judá éstas habían quedado.

¶Lo opuesto   Jehová condenó a los judíos en Jerusalén por romper su pacto para liberar a sus esclavos (34:8 - 22)

^34:8Esta es la palabra que vino a Jeremías desde Jehová, después que Sedequías había hecho un pacto con todo el pueblo que estaban en Jerusalén, para promulgarles libertad, ^34:9que todo hombre deje a su siervo y cada uno su sierva, siendo hebreo o hebreo, ir libre; y que ninguno se sirviese de ellos, es decir, de un judío su hermano.

^34:10Ahora cuando oyeron todos los príncipes, y todo el pueblo que habían entrado en el pacto de dejar cada uno su siervo y cada uno su sierva libres, que ninguno usase más de ellos como de siervos, ellos obedecieron, y los dejaron ir. ^34:11Pero después ellos cambiaron de parecer, e hicieron volver a los siervos y a las siervas, a quienes habían dejado libres; y ellos los pusieron en servidumbre por siervos y por siervas.

^34:12Por lo cual vino la Palabra de Jehová a Jeremías, de parte de Jehová, diciendo, ^34:13“Así dice Jehová Dios de Israel, ‘Yo hice pacto con vuestros padres el día que los saqué de tierra de Egipto, de casa de siervos, diciendo, ^34:14‘Al cabo de siete años dejará cada uno a su hermano hebreo que le fuere vendido; te servirá, pues, seis años, y lo enviarás libre de ti’; pero vuestros padres no me oyeron, ni inclinaron su oído.

^34:15“‘Y ustedes os habíais hoy convertido, y hecho lo recto delante de mis ojos, anunciando cada uno libertad a su prójimo; y habíais hecho pacto en mi presencia, en la Casa sobre la cual es invocado mi Nombre. ^34:16Pero os habéis vuelto y profanado mi Nombre, y habéis vuelto a tomar cada uno a su siervo y cada uno a su sierva, que habíais dejado libres a su voluntad; y los habéis sujetado para que os sean siervos y siervas’.

^34:17“Por tanto, así ha dicho Jehová, ‘Ustedes no me habéis oído en promulgar cada uno libertad a su hermano, y cada uno a su compañero; he aquí que yo os promulgo libertad,’ dice Jehová, “a espada y a pestilencia, y a hambre; y haré que seáis removidos a todos los reinos de la tierra. ^34:18Y entregaré a los hombres que traspasaron mi pacto, que no han llevado a efecto las palabras del pacto que celebraron en mi presencia dividiendo en dos partes el becerro y pasando por medio de ellas: ^34:19a los príncipes de Judá y a los príncipes de Jerusalén, a los eunucos y a los sacerdotes, y a todo el pueblo de la tierra, que pasaron entre las partes del becerro, ^34:20los entregaré en mano de sus enemigos y en mano de los que buscan su vida; y sus cuerpos muertos serán para comida de las aves del cielo, y de las bestias de la tierra. ^34:21Y a Sedequías rey de Judá, y a sus príncipes, entregaré en mano de sus enemigos, y en mano de los que buscan su vida, y en mano del ejército del rey de Babilonia, que se fueron de ustedes. ^34:22He aquí, mandaré yo,’ dice Jehová, ‘y los haré volver a esta ciudad, y pelearán contra ella, y la tomarán, y le prenderán fuego; y reduciré a soledad las ciudades de Judá, hasta no quedar morador’”.

¶Único   Jehová bendijo a los hijos de Jonadab por obedecer su padre, pero condenó a Judá y a Jerusalén por no obedecerle (35:1 - 19)

^35:1La Palabra que vino a Jeremías de parte de Jehová en días de Joacim hijo de Josías, rey de Judá, diciendo, ^35:2“Ve a casa de los recabitas, y habla con ellos, e introdúcelos en la Casa de Jehová, en una de las cámaras, y dales a beber vino”.

^35:3Tomé entonces a Jaazanías hijo de Jeremías, hijo de Habasinías, y a sus hermanos, y a todos sus hijos, y a toda la familia de los recabitas; ^35:4y los metí en la Casa de Jehová, en la cámara de los hijos de Hanán, hijo de Igdalías, varón de Dios, la cual estaba junto a la cámara de los príncipes, que estaba sobre la cámara de Maasías hijo de Salum, guarda de la puerta. ^35:5Y puse delante de los hijos de la familia de los recabitas tazas y copas llenas de vino, y les dije, “Bebed vino”. ^35:6Pero dijeron, “No beberemos vino: porque Jonadab hijo de Recab nuestro padre nos mandó, diciendo, ‘No beberéis vino jamás, ni ustedes ni vuestros hijos; ^35:7ni edificaréis casa, ni sembraréis sementera, ni plantaréis viña, ni la poseeréis; sino que moraréis en tiendas todos vuestros días, para que viváis muchos días sobre la faz de la tierra donde ustedes peregrináis’. ^35:8Y nosotros hemos obedecido a la voz de Jonadab nuestro padre, hijo de Recab, en todas las cosas que nos mandó, de no beber vino en todos nuestros días, ni nosotros, ni nuestras esposas, ni nuestros hijos, ni nuestras hijas; ^35:9y de no edificar casas para nuestra morada, y de no tener viña, ni heredad, ni sementera. ^35:10Pero hemos morado en tiendas, y hemos obedecido y hecho conforme a todas las cosas que nos mandó Jonadab nuestro padre. ^35:11Pero sucedió que cuando Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia subió a la tierra, dijimos, ‘Venid, y entrémonos en Jerusalén, por miedo al ejército de los caldeos y por miedo al ejército de los de Siria’; y en Jerusalén nos quedamos”.

^35:12Y vino la Palabra de Jehová a Jeremías, diciendo, ^35:13“Así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel: Ve, y di a los varones de Judá, y a los moradores de Jerusalén, ‘‘¿No recibiréis instrucción para obedecer a mis palabras?’ dice Jehová. ^35:14‘Fue firme la palabra de Jonadab hijo de Recab, el cual mandó a sus hijos que no bebiesen vino, y no lo han bebido hasta hoy, por obedecer al mandamiento de su padre; y yo os he hablado a ustedes, madrugando, y hablando, y no me habéis oído. ^35:15Y envié a ustedes a todos mis siervos los Profetas, madrugando y enviándolos a decir, ‘Volveos ahora cada uno de su mal camino, y enmendad vuestras obras, y no vayáis tras dioses ajenos para servirles, y viviréis en la tierra que di a ustedes y a vuestros padres’; pero no inclinasteis vuestro oído, ni me oísteis.

^35:16“‘‘Ciertamente los hijos de Jonadab, hijo de Recab, tuvieron por firme el mandamiento que les dio su padre; pero este pueblo no me ha obedecido. ^35:17Por tanto, así dice Jehová Dios de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, ‘He aquí traeré yo sobre Judá y sobre todos los moradores de Jerusalén todo el mal que contra ellos he hablado: porque les hablé, y no oyeron; los llamé, y no han respondido’’”.

^35:18Y dijo Jeremías a la familia de los recabitas, “Así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, ‘Porque obedecisteis al mandamiento de Jonadab vuestro padre, y guardasteis todos sus mandamientos, e hicisteis conforme a todas las cosas que os mandó; ^35:19por tanto, así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, ‘No faltará varón de Jonadab, hijo de Recab, que esté en mi presencia todos los días’”.

¶El complemento   Jeremías registró todas las palabras que Jehová le había dicho; y envió a su criado a leerlo al pueblo de Jerusalén (36:1 - 15)

^36:1Y aconteció en el cuarto año de Joacim hijo de Josías, rey de Judá, que vino esta Palabra a Jeremías, de parte de Jehová, diciendo, ^36:2“Tómate un rollo de Libro, y escribe en él todas las palabras que te he hablado contra Israel y contra Judá, y contra todas las gentes, desde el día que comencé a hablarte, desde los días de Josías hasta hoy. ^36:3Quizá oiga la casa de Judá todo el mal que yo pienso hacerles, y se arrepienta cada uno de su mal camino, y yo perdonaré su maldad y su pecado”.

^36:4Y llamó Jeremías a Baruc hijo de Nerías, y escribió Baruc de boca de Jeremías, en un rollo de libro, todas las palabras que Jehová le había hablado. ^36:5Después mandó Jeremías a Baruc, diciendo, “Yo estoy preso, no puedo entrar en la Casa de Jehová; ^36:6entra tú pues, y lee de este rollo que escribiste de mi boca, las palabras de Jehová en oídos del pueblo, en la Casa de Jehová, el día del ayuno; y las leerás también en oídos de todo Judá que vienen de sus ciudades. ^36:7Quizá llegue la oración de ellos a la presencia de Jehová, y se vuelva cada uno de su mal camino: porque grande es el furor y la ira que ha pronunciado Jehová contra este pueblo”. ^36:8Y Baruc hijo de Nerías hizo conforme a todas las cosas que el Profeta Jeremías le mandó, leyendo en el libro las palabras de Jehová en la Casa de Jehová.

^36:9Y aconteció en el año quinto de Joacim hijo de Josías, rey de Judá, en el mes noveno, que promulgaron ayuno en la presencia de Jehová, a todo el pueblo de Jerusalén, y a todo el pueblo que venía de las ciudades de Judá a Jerusalén. ^36:10Entonces Baruc leyó en el libro las palabras de Jeremías en la Casa de Jehová, en la cámara de Gemarías hijo de Safán escriba, en el atrio de arriba, a la entrada de la puerta nueva de la Casa de Jehová, a oídos del pueblo.

^36:11Y Micaías hijo de Gemarías, hijo de Safán, habiendo oído del libro todas las palabras de Jehová, ^36:12descendió a la casa del rey, a la cámara del escriba, y he aquí que todos los príncipes estaban allí sentados: Elisama el escriba, Delaías hijo de Semaías, Elnatán hijo de Acbor, Gemarías hijo de Safán, Sedequías hijo de Ananías, y todos los príncipes. ^36:13Y Micaías les contó todas las palabras que había oído cuando Baruc leyó en el libro a oídos del pueblo.

^36:14Entonces enviaron todos los príncipes a Jehudí hijo de Netanías, hijo de Selemías, hijo de Cusi, para que dijese a Baruc, “Toma el rollo en que leíste a oídos del pueblo, y ven”. Y Baruc, hijo de Nerías, tomó el rollo en su mano, y vino a ellos. ^36:15Y le dijeron, “Siéntate ahora, y léelo a nuestros oídos”. Y leyó Baruc a sus oídos.

¶El complemento   Joaquim el rey quemó el rollo de Jeremías en el fuego; y Jehová pronunció juicio sobre él (36:16 - 32)

^36:16Y aconteció que cuando oyeron todas aquellas palabras, cada uno se volvió espantado a su compañero, y dijeron a Baruc, “Sin duda contaremos al rey todas estas palabras”. ^36:17Preguntaron luego a Baruc, diciendo, “¿Cuéntanos ahora, cómo escribiste de boca de Jeremías todas estas palabras?”. ^36:18Y Baruc les dijo, “Él me dictaba de su boca todas estas palabras, y yo escribía con tinta en el Libro”. ^36:19Entonces dijeron los príncipes a Baruc, “Ve, y escóndete tú y Jeremías, y nadie sepa dónde estáis”.

^36:20Y entraron a donde estaba el rey, al atrio, habiendo depositado el rollo en la cámara de Elisama el escriba; y contaron a oídos del rey todas las palabras. ^36:21Y envió el rey a Jehudí a que tomase el rollo, el cual lo tomó de la cámara del escriba Elisama, y leyó en él Jehudí a oídos del rey, y a oídos de todos los príncipes que junto al rey estaban.

^36:22Y el rey estaba en la casa de invierno en el mes noveno, y había un brasero ardiendo delante de él. ^36:23Y aconteció que cuando Jehudí hubo leído tres o cuatro planas, lo rasgó el rey con un cuchillo de escribanía, y lo echó en el fuego que había en el brasero, hasta que todo el rollo se consumió en el fuego que había en el brasero. ^36:24Y no tuvieron temor, ni rasgaron sus vestiduras, ni el rey ni ninguno de sus siervos que oyeron todas estas palabras. ^36:25Y aunque Elnatán y Delaías y Gemarías rogaron al rey que no quemase aquel rollo, no los quiso oír. ^36:26Antes mandó el rey a Jerameel hijo de Amelec, y a Seraías hijo de Azriel, y a Selemías hijo de Abdeel, que prendiesen a Baruc el escriba y al Profeta Jeremías; pero Jehová los escondió.

^36:27Y vino la Palabra de Jehová a Jeremías, después que el rey quemó el rollo, las palabras que Baruc había escrito de boca de Jeremías, diciendo, ^36:28“Vuelve a tomar otro rollo, y escribe en él todas las palabras primeras que estaban en el primer rollo que quemó Joacim, el rey de Judá. ^36:29Y dirás a Joacim rey de Judá, ‘Así dice Jehová, ‘Tú quemaste este rollo, diciendo, ‘¿Por qué escribiste en él, diciendo, ‘De cierto, vendrá el rey de Babilonia, y destruirá esta tierra, y hará que no queden en ella hombres ni animales’?’’’ ^36:30Por tanto, así dice Jehová acerca de Joacim rey de Judá, ‘No tendrá quien se siente sobre el trono de David; y su cuerpo será echado al calor del día y al hielo de la noche. ^36:31Y castigaré a él y a su simiente y a sus siervos por su maldad; y traeré sobre ellos, y sobre los moradores de Jerusalén, y sobre los varones de Judá, todo el mal que les he dicho y no escucharon’”.

^36:32Y tomó Jeremías otro rollo y lo dio a Baruc hijo de Nerías escriba; y escribió en él de boca de Jeremías todas las palabras del libro que quemó en el fuego Joacim rey de Judá; y aun fueron añadidas sobre ellas muchas otras palabras semejantes.

¶Lo opuesto   Después de convertirse en rey, Sedequías le pidió a Jeremías que rezara por Judá (37:1 - 10)

^37:1Y reinó el rey Sedequías hijo de Josías, en lugar de Conías hijo de Joacim, al cual Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia había constituido por rey en la tierra de Judá. ^37:2Pero ni él, ni sus siervos, ni el pueblo de la tierra obedecieron a las palabras que Jehová habló por medio del Profeta Jeremías. ^37:3Y envió el rey Sedequías a Jucal hijo de Selemías, y a Sofonías hijo de Maasías el sacerdote, para que dijesen al Profeta Jeremías, “Ruega ahora por nosotros a Jehová nuestro Dios”.

^37:4Y Jeremías entraba y salía en medio del pueblo: porque aún no lo habían puesto en la cárcel.

^37:5Y cuando el ejército de Faraón hubo salido de Egipto, y llegó la noticia de ello a oídos de los caldeos que tenían sitiada a Jerusalén, se retiraron de Jerusalén.

^37:6Entonces vino la Palabra de Jehová al Profeta Jeremías, diciendo, ^37:7“Así dice Jehová Dios de Israel, ‘Diréis así al rey de Judá, que os envió a mí para que me consultaseis, ‘He aquí que el ejército de Faraón que había salido en vuestro socorro, se volverá a su tierra en Egipto. ^37:8Y los caldeos volverán y pelearán contra esta ciudad, y la tomarán y le prenderán fuego’.

^37:9“Así dice Jehová, ‘No os engañéis a ustedes mismos, diciendo, ‘De cierto los caldeos se irán de nosotros’: porque no se irán: ^37:10porque aun cuando hirieseis a todo el ejército de los caldeos que pelean contra ustedes, y quedasen de ellos hombres heridos, cada uno se levantará de su tienda, y prenderán fuego a esta ciudad’”.

¶Lo opuesto   Jeremías le pidió al rey que no le devolviera a la prisión de Jonathan el escriba (37:11 - 21)

^37:11Y aconteció que cuando el ejército de los caldeos se retiró de Jerusalén por miedo al ejército de Faraón, ^37:12Jeremías salió de Jerusalén para irse a la tierra de Benjamín, para apartarse allí de en medio del pueblo.

^37:13Y cuando llegó a la puerta de Benjamín, estaba allí un capitán de la guardia que se llamaba Irías, hijo de Selemías hijo de Hananías, el cual apresó al Profeta Jeremías, diciendo, “¡Tú te pasas a los caldeos!”. ^37:14Y Jeremías dijo, “Falso; no me paso a los caldeos”. Pero él no lo escuchó, antes prendió Irías a Jeremías, y lo llevó delante de los príncipes. ^37:15Y los príncipes se airaron contra Jeremías, y le azotaron, y le pusieron en prisión en la casa de Jonatán escriba: porque a ésta la habían convertido en cárcel.

^37:16Entró pues Jeremías en la casa de la mazmorra, y en las camarillas. Y habiendo estado allá Jeremías por muchos días, ^37:17el rey Sedequías envió, y le sacó; y le preguntó el rey escondidamente en su casa, y dijo, “¿Hay alguna cualquier Palabra desde Jehová?”. Y Jeremías dijo: “Hay; él dijo: ‘Porque seréis entregados en manos del rey de Babilonia’”.

^37:18Dijo también Jeremías al rey Sedequías, “¿En qué pequé contra ti, y contra tus siervos, y contra este pueblo, para que me pusieseis en la cárcel? ^37:19¿Y dónde están vuestros profetas que os profetizaban, diciendo, ‘No vendrá el rey de Babilonia contra ustedes, ni contra esta tierra?’ ^37:20Ahora pues, oye, te ruego, oh rey mi señor: caiga ahora mi súplica delante de ti, y no me hagas volver a casa de Jonatán escriba, para que no muera allí”.

^37:21Entonces dio orden el rey Sedequías, y pusieron a Jeremías en el patio de la cárcel, haciéndole dar una torta de pan al día, de la plaza de los Panaderos, hasta que todo el pan de la ciudad se gastase. Y quedó Jeremías en el patio de la cárcel.

^38:1Y oyó Sefatías hijo de Matán, y Gedalías hijo de Pasur, y Jucal hijo de Selemías, y Pasur hijo de Malquías, las palabras que Jeremías hablaba a todo el pueblo, diciendo, ^38:2“Así dice Jehová, ‘El que se quede en esta ciudad morirá a espada, o de hambre, o de pestilencia; pero el que se pase a los caldeos vivirá, pues su vida le será por despojo, y vivirá’. ^38:3Así dice Jehová, ‘De cierto será entregada esta ciudad en mano del ejército del rey de Babilonia, y la tomará’”.

^38:4Y dijeron los príncipes al rey, “Te pedimos que sea muerto este hombre: porque de esta manera hace desmayar las manos de los hombres de guerra que han quedado en esta ciudad, y las manos de todo el pueblo, hablándoles tales palabras: porque este hombre no busca la paz de este pueblo, sino el mal”. ^38:5Y dijo el rey Sedequías, “Helo ahí, en vuestras manos está; pues el rey nada puede hacer contra ustedes”. ^38:6Entonces tomaron ellos a Jeremías, y lo echaron en la mazmorra de Malquías hijo de Amelec, que estaba en el patio de la cárcel; y metieron a Jeremías con sogas. Y en la mazmorra no había agua, sino cieno; y se hundió Jeremías en el cieno.

^38:7Y oyendo Ebedmelec, hombre etíope, eunuco que estaba en casa del rey, que habían puesto a Jeremías en la mazmorra (y estando sentado el rey a la puerta de Benjamín), ^38:8Ebedmelec salió de la casa del rey, y habló al rey, diciendo, ^38:9“Mi señor el rey, mal hicieron estos varones en todo lo que han hecho al Profeta Jeremías, al cual echaron en la mazmorra: porque allí morirá de hambre, pues no hay más pan en la ciudad”.

^38:10Entonces mandó el rey al mismo Ebedmelec etíope, diciendo, “Toma en tu poder treinta hombres de aquí, y saca al Profeta Jeremías de la mazmorra, antes que muera”. ^38:11Y tomó Ebedmelec en su poder hombres, y entró a la casa del rey al lugar debajo de la tesorería, y tomó de allí trapos viejos y raídos, ropas viejas y andrajosas, y los echó a Jeremías con sogas en la mazmorra. ^38:12Y el etíope Ebedmelec dijo a Jeremías, “Pon ahora esos trapos viejos y ropas raídas y andrajosas bajo tus sobacos, debajo de las sogas”. Y lo hizo así Jeremías. ^38:13De este modo sacaron a Jeremías con sogas, y lo subieron de la mazmorra.

Y quedó Jeremías en el patio de la cárcel.

^38:14Después envió el rey Sedequías, e hizo traer a sí al Profeta Jeremías a la tercera entrada que estaba en la Casa de Jehová. Y dijo el rey a Jeremías, “Voy a preguntarte algo, no me ocultes nada”. ^38:15Y Jeremías dijo a Sedequías, “Si te lo declaro, ¿no es verdad que me matarás? Y si te doy un consejo, no me escucharás”. ^38:16Y el rey Sedequías juró en secreto a Jeremías, diciendo, “Vive Jehová que nos hizo esta alma, que no te mataré, ni te entregaré en mano de estos varones que buscan tu vida”.

^38:17Entonces dijo Jeremías a Sedequías, “Así dice Jehová Dios de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, ‘Si en verdad te pasas a los príncipes del rey de Babilonia, tu alma vivirá, y esta ciudad no será puesta a fuego; y vivirás tú y tu casa. ^38:18Pero si no te pasas a los príncipes del rey de Babilonia, esta ciudad será entregada en mano de los caldeos, y le prenderán fuego, y tú no escaparás de sus manos’”. ^38:19Y el rey Sedequías dijo a Jeremías, “Tengo temor de los Judíos que se han pasado a los caldeos, no sea que me entreguen en sus manos y me escarnezcan”. ^38:20Pero Jeremías dijo, “No te entregarán. Te ruego que obedezcas la voz de Jehová, que yo te hablo, y te irá bien y vivirá tu alma. ^38:21Pero si rehúsas salir, esta es la Palabra que me ha mostrado Jehová: ^38:22‘Y he aquí que todas las mujeres que han quedado en casa del rey de Judá, serán llevadas a los príncipes del rey de Babilonia; y ellas mismas dirán, ‘Te han engañado, y han prevalecido contra ti tus amigos; hundieron en el cieno tus pies, se volvieron atrás’. ^38:23Sacarán, pues, todas tus esposas y tus hijos a los caldeos, y tú no escaparás de sus manos, sino que por mano del rey de Babilonia serás apresado, y a esta ciudad quemará a fuego’.”

^38:24Y dijo Sedequías a Jeremías, “Que nadie sepa estas palabras, y no morirás. ^38:25Y si los príncipes oyen que yo he hablado contigo, y vienen a ti y te dicen, ‘Decláranos ahora qué hablaste con el rey, no nos lo encubras, y no te mataremos; y dinos también qué te dijo el rey’; ^38:26tú les dirás, ‘Supliqué al rey que no me hiciese volver a casa de Jonatán para que no me muriese allí’”.

^38:27Y vinieron luego todos los príncipes a Jeremías, y le preguntaron; y él les respondió conforme a todo lo que el rey le había mandado. Con esto se dejaron de él: porque el asunto no se había oído.

^38:28Y quedó Jeremías en el patio de la cárcel hasta el día que fue tomada Jerusalén; y allí estaba cuando Jerusalén fue tomada.
