^1:1The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests that were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin: ^1:2to whom the Word of Jehovah came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign. ^1:3It came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, to the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah king of Judah, to the carrying away of Jerusalem captive in the fifth month.

^1:4Then the Word of Jehovah came to me, saying, ^1:5“Before I formed you in the belly I knew you; and before you came forth out of the womb I sanctified you; and I ordained you a Prophet to the nations.”

^1:6Then I said, “Ah, Lord Jehovah! Behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child.” ^1:7But Jehovah said to me, “‘Say not, ‘I am a child’: for you shall go to all that I shall send you; and whatsoever I command you, you shall speak. ^1:8Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with you to deliver you,’ says Jehovah.”

^1:9Then Jehovah put forth his hand, and touched my mouth; and Jehovah said to me, “Behold, I have put my words in your mouth.

^1:10“See, this day have I set you over the nations and over the kingdoms: to root out, to pull down, to destroy, to throw down, to build, and to plant.”

^1:11Moreover the Word of Jehovah came to me, saying, “Jeremiah, what do you see?” And I said, “I see a rod of an almond tree.” ^1:12Then Jehovah said to me, “You have seen well: for I will hasten my Word to perform it.”

^1:13And the Word of Jehovah came to me the second time, saying, “What do you see?” And I said, “I see a boiling pot; and its face is toward the north.” ^1:14Then Jehovah said to me, “‘Out of the north an evil shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land: ^1:15for, lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north,’ says Jehovah; ‘and they shall come, and they shall set every one his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all its walls round about, and against all the cities of Judah. ^1:16And I will utter my judgments against them touching all their wickedness, who have forsaken me, and have burned incense to other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands.’”

^1:17“‘Therefore gird up your loins, and arise; and speak to them all that I command you; be not dismayed at their faces, lest I confound you before them.

^1:18“‘For, behold, I have made you this day a fortified city, an iron pillar, and bronze walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against its princes, against its priests, and against the people of the land.

^1:19“‘And they shall fight against you; but they shall not prevail against you: for I am with you,’ says Jehovah, ‘to deliver you.’”

^2:1Moreover the Word of Jehovah came to me, saying, ^2:2“Go and cry in the hearing of Jerusalem, saying, ‘Thus says Jehovah: ‘I remember you, the kindness of your youth, the love of your espousals, when you went after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown. ^2:3Israel was holiness to Jehovah, and the firstfruits of his increase. All that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them,’ says Jehovah.’

^2:4“Hear the Word of Jehovah, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel. ^2:5Thus says Jehovah: ‘What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they have gone far from me, and walked after vanity, and become vain? ^2:6Neither did they say, ‘Where is Jehovah that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt?’ ^2:7And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat its fruit and its goodness; but when you entered, you defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination. ^2:8The priests did not say, ‘Where is Jehovah?’ And they that handle the Law did not know me; the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.’”

^2:9“‘Therefore I will yet contend with you,’ says Jehovah, ‘and with your children's children will I contend: ^2:10for pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send to Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there is such a thing. ^2:11Has a nation ever changed their gods, which are false gods? But my people have exchanged their glory for that which does not benefit. ^2:12Be astonished, O you heavens, at this; and be horribly afraid; be very desolate,’ says Jehovah. ^2:13‘For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the Fountain of Living Water, and hewn themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

^2:14“‘Is Israel a servant? Is he a home-born slave? Why is he plundered? ^2:15The young lions roared upon him, and shouted; and they made his land waste; his cities are burned without an inhabitant. ^2:16Also the children of Noph and Tahpanhes have broken the crown of your head. ^2:17Have you not procured this to yourself, in that you have forsaken Jehovah your God, when he led you by the way? ^2:18And now what have you to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the water of Sihor? Or what have you to do in the way of Assyria, to drink the water of the Euphrates river? ^2:19Your own wickedness shall correct you, and your backslidings shall reprove you; therefore know and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that you have forsaken Jehovah your God, and that my fear is not in you,’ says the Lord Jehovah of hosts.

^2:20“‘For many years I have broken your yoke, and burst your bonds; and you said, ‘I will not transgress’, when upon every high hill and under every green tree you wandered, playing the whore with false gods. ^2:21Yet I had planted you a noble vine, wholly a right seed. How then have you turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine to me? ^2:22For though you wash yourself with lye, and use much soap, yet your iniquity is marked before me,’ says the Lord Jehovah.”

¶Complement   The people of the northern kingdom of Israel have forgotten Jehovah their God (2:23 - 3:5)

^2:23“‘How can you say, ‘I am not polluted; I have not gone after Baalim’? See your way in the valley, and know what you have done. You are a swift dromedary traversing her ways; ^2:24a wild donkey used to the wilderness, that snuffs up the wind at her pleasure. In her occasion who can turn her away? All they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.

^2:25“‘Withhold your foot from being unshod, and your throat from thirst; but you said, ‘There is no hope; no, for I have loved strangers, and I will go after them.’ ^2:26As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so the house of Israel is ashamed: they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets; ^2:27saying to a piece of wood, ‘You are my father’; and to a stone, ‘You have brought me forth’: for they have turned their back to me, and not their face.

“‘But in the time of their trouble they will say, ‘Arise, O Jehovah, and save us.’ ^2:28But where are your gods that you have made for you? Let them arise, if they can save you in the time of your trouble: for according to the number of your cities are your gods, O Judah. ^2:29Why will you contend with me? All of you have transgressed against me,’ says Jehovah. ^2:30‘In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction. Your own sword has devoured your Prophets, like a destroying lion.’”

^2:31“‘O evil generation, see the Word of Jehovah! Have I been a wilderness to Israel? A land of darkness? Why do my people say, ‘We are lords; we will not come to you anymore’? ^2:32Can a virgin forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Yet my people have forgotten me days without number. ^2:33Why do you trim your way to seek love? Therefore you have also taught the wicked ones your ways. ^2:34Also in your skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocent children. I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these altars to idols. ^2:35Yet you say, ‘Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me.’ Behold, I will contend with you, because you say, ‘I have not sinned.’ ^2:36Why do you go about so much to change your way? You shall also be ashamed of Egypt, as you were ashamed of Assyria. ^2:37Moreover, you shall go forth from him with your hands upon your head: for Jehovah has rejected your confidences, and you shall not prosper in them.

^3:1“‘They say, ‘If a man divorces his wife, and she goes from him, and becomes another man's wife, shall he return to her again? Shall that land not be greatly polluted?’ But even though you have played the whore with many lovers, yet return again to me,’ says Jehovah. ^3:2‘Lift up your eyes to the high places, and see where you have not been lain with. You have sat for them in the ways, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and you have polluted the land with your whoredoms and with your wickedness. ^3:3Therefore the showers have been withheld, and there has been no latter rain; and you had a whore's forehead; you refused to be ashamed. ^3:4Will you not from this time cry to me, ‘My father, you are the guide of my youth? ^3:5Will he reserve his anger forever? Will he keep it to the end?’ But behold, you have spoken and done evil things as you could.’”

¶Complement   Jehovah called the northern Kingdom of Israel to repentance (3:6 - 4:4)

^3:6Jehovah also said to me in the days of Josiah the king, “‘Have you seen that which backsliding Israel has done? She has gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree; and has played the whore there with false gods. ^3:7And I said after she had done all these things, ‘Turn unto me.’ But she did not return; and her treacherous sister Judah saw it. ^3:8And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce, yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but went and played the whore also. ^3:9And it came to pass through the casualness of her whoredom, that she defiled the land; and she committed adultery with stones and with pieces of wood. ^3:10And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah has not turned to me with her whole heart, but in pretense,’ says Jehovah.”

^3:11And Jehovah said to me, “The backsliding Israel has justified herself more than treacherous Judah. ^3:12Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, ‘’Return, you backsliding Israel,’ says Jehovah; ’and I will not cause my anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful,’ says Jehovah; ’and I will not remain angry forever. ^3:13Only acknowledge your iniquity, that you have transgressed against Jehovah your God, and have scattered your ways to the strange gods under every green tree, and you have not obeyed my voice,’ says Jehovah. ^3:14‘Turn, O backsliding children,’ says Jehovah, ‘for I am married to you; and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion. ^3:15And I will give you pastors according to my heart, who shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.

^3:16“‘And it shall come to pass, when you are multiplied and increased in the land, in those days,’ says Jehovah, ‘they shall no longer say, ‘The Ark of the Covenant of Jehovah’; neither shall it come to mind; neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit it; and neither shall that be done anymore. ^3:17At that time, they shall call Jerusalem ‘The throne of Jehovah’; and all the nations shall be gathered to it, to the Name of Jehovah, to Jerusalem; neither shall they walk anymore after the stubbornness of their evil heart. ^3:18In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given for an inheritance to your fathers.

^3:19“‘But I said, ‘How shall I put you among the children, and give you a pleasant land, a beautiful heritage of the hosts of nations?’ And I said, ‘You shall call me, ‘My father’, and shall not turn away from me.’ ^3:20Surely as a wife treacherously departs from her husband, so have you dealt treacherously with me, O house of Israel,’ says Jehovah. ^3:21‘A voice was heard upon the high places, weeping and supplications of the children of Israel: for they have perverted their way, and they have forgotten Jehovah their God. ^3:22Return, you backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings.’” “Behold, we come to you: for you are Jehovah our God. ^3:23Truly in vain is deliverance hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains; truly the deliverance of Israel is in Jehovah our God. ^3:24For shame has devoured the labor of our fathers from our youth: their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters. ^3:25We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covers us: for we have sinned against Jehovah our God, both we and our fathers, from our youth even until this day, and have not obeyed the voice of Jehovah our God.”

^4:1“‘If you will truly return, O Israel,’ says Jehovah, ‘return to me; and if you will put away your abominations out of my sight, then you shall not move from the land. ^4:2And you shall swear ‘Jehovah lives’, in truth, in judgment, and in righteousness. And the nations shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory.’ ^4:3For thus says Jehovah to the men of Judah and Jerusalem: ‘Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns. ^4:4Circumcise yourselves to Jehovah, and take away the foreskins of your heart, you men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, lest my fury comes forth like fire, and burns so that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.’”

¶Opposite   Evil is coming from the north toward Jerusalem (4:5 - 22)

^4:5“‘Declare in Judah, and publish in Jerusalem; and say, ‘Blow the trumpet in the land!’ Cry, gather together, and say, ‘Assemble yourselves, and let us go into the fortified cities!’ ^4:6Set up the standard toward Zion; retire, and delay not: for I will bring evil from the north, and a great destruction. ^4:7The lion has come up from his thicket, and the destroyer of the Gentiles is on his way; he has gone forth from his place to make your land desolate; and your cities shall be laid waste, without an inhabitant. ^4:8For this gird yourself with sackcloth, lament and howl, ‘For the fierce anger of Jehovah has not turned back from us!’ ^4:9And it shall come to pass at that day,’ says Jehovah, ’that the heart of the king shall perish, and the heart of the princes; and the priests shall be astonished, and the prophets shall wonder.’” ^4:10Then I said, “Ah, Lord Jehovah! Surely you have greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, ‘You shall have peace’, whereas the sword reaches unto the soul.”

^4:11“At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, ‘A dry wind of the high places in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people’, but not to fan, nor to cleanse, ^4:12even a full wind from those places shall come to me; now also will I give sentence against them. ^4:13“Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots shall be as a whirlwind; his horses are swifter than eagles.” Woe to us! For we are plundered.”

^4:14“‘O Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness, that you may be saved. How long shall your vain thoughts lodge within you? ^4:15For a voice declares from Dan, and publishes affliction from mount Ephraim: ^4:16‘Make mention to the nations! Behold, publish against Jerusalem, that watchers come from a far country, and give out their voice against the cities of Judah!’ ^4:17As keepers of a field, are they against her round about, because she has been rebellious against me,’ says Jehovah. ^4:18‘Your way and your doings have procured these things to you; this is your wickedness, because it is bitter, because it reaches to your heart.’”

^4:19“My bowels, my bowels! I am pained at my very heart. My heart makes a noise in me; I cannot hold my peace, because you have heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war! ^4:20Destruction upon destruction is cried: for the whole land is plundered; suddenly are my tents plundered, and my curtains in a moment. ^4:21How long shall I see the standard, and hear the sound of the trumpet?

^4:22“For my people are foolish. They have not known me. They are foolish children, and they have no understanding. They are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.”

¶Opposite   The people of Israel and Judah refused to repent of their sins (4:23 - 5:19)

^4:23“‘I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light. ^4:24I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly. ^4:25I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled. ^4:26I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all its cities were broken down at the presence of Jehovah, and by his fierce anger.’ ^4:27For Jehovah has said this, ‘The whole land shall be desolate, yet will I not make a full end. ^4:28For this the earth shall mourn, and the heavens above be black, because I have spoken it; I have purposed it, and will not repent; neither will I turn back from it. ^4:29The whole city shall flee for the noise of the horsemen and bowmen; they shall go into thickets, and climb up upon the rocks; every city shall be forsaken, and not a man dwell in it. ^4:30And when you are plundered, what will you do? Though you clothe yourself with crimson, though you adorn yourself with ornaments of gold, though you enlarge your eyes with painting, you shall make yourself beautiful in vain; your lovers will despise you; they will seek your life: ^4:31for I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, and the anguish as of her that brings forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of Zion, that bewails herself, that spreads her hands, saying, ‘Woe is me now! For my soul is wearied because of murderers.’

^5:1“‘Run to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in its broad places, if you can find a man, if there is anyone that executes judgment, that seeks the truth; and I will pardon it. ^5:2And though they say, ‘Jehovah lives’, surely they swear falsely.’”

^5:3“O Jehovah, are not your eyes upon the truth? You have smitten them, but they have not grieved; you have consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction. They have made their faces harder than a rock. They have refused to return. ^5:4Therefore I said, ‘Surely these are poor; they are foolish: for they do not know the way of Jehovah, nor the judgment of their God. ^5:5I will go to the great men, and will speak to them: for they have known the way of Jehovah, and the judgment of their God.’ But these also have altogether broken the yoke, and burst the bonds; ^5:6therefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, and a wolf of the desert shall plunder them; a leopard shall watch over their cities. Every one that goes out from there shall be torn in pieces, because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased.”

^5:7“‘How shall I pardon you for this? Your children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are not gods; when I had fed them to the full, then they committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the prostitutes' houses. ^5:8They were like fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbor's wife. ^5:9Shall I not visit for these things,’ says Jehovah; ‘and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? ^5:10Go up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end; take away her battlements: for they are not Jehovah's. ^5:11For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me,’ says Jehovah. ^5:12‘They have denied Jehovah, and said, ’It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine; ^5:13and the prophets shall become wind, and the Word is not in them; thus shall it be done to them.’’

^5:14“Therefore thus says Jehovah the God of hosts: ‘Because you speak this word, behold, I will make my words in your mouth as fire, and this people as wood, and it shall devour them! ^5:15See, I will bring a nation upon you from afar, O house of Israel,’ says Jehovah. ‘It is a mighty nation; it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language you do not know; neither do you understand what they say. ^5:16Their quiver is like an open tomb; they are all mighty men. ^5:17And they shall eat up your harvest, and your bread, which your sons and your daughters should eat; they shall eat up your flocks and your herds; they shall eat up your vines and your fig trees; they shall impoverish your fortified cities, which you trusted in, with the sword. ^5:18Nevertheless in those days,’ says Jehovah, ‘I will not make a full end with you.’ ^5:19And it shall come to pass, when you shall say, ‘Why does Jehovah our God do all these things to us?’ Then you shall answer them, ‘Like as you have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall you serve strangers in a land that is not yours.’”

^5:20“Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying, ^5:21‘Now hear this, O foolish people, and without understanding, who have eyes, but see not; who have ears, but hear not. ^5:22Do you not fear me?’ says Jehovah. ‘Will you not tremble at my presence, who have placed the sand for the boundary of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it; and though its waves toss themselves, yet they cannot prevail; though they roar, yet they cannot pass over it?

^5:23“‘But this people has a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone. ^5:24Neither do they say in their heart, ‘Let us now fear Jehovah our God, that gives rain, both the former and the latter, in his season. He reserves to us the appointed weeks of the harvest.’ ^5:25Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withheld good things from you: ^5:26for among my people are found wicked men; they lay wait, as he that sets snares; they set a trap; they catch men. ^5:27As a cage is full of birds, so their houses are full of deceit; therefore they have become great, and grown rich. ^5:28They have grown fat; they shine; yea, they surpass even the deeds of the wicked! They judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge. ^5:29Shall I not visit for these things?’ says Jehovah. ‘Shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? ^5:30An astonishing and horrible thing is committed in the land: ^5:31the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their own authority; and my people love it this way; and what will you do in its end?’”

^6:1“O you children of Benjamin, gather yourselves to flee out of the midst of Jerusalem, and blow the trumpet in Tekoa, and set up a sign of fire in Beth-haccerem: for evil appears out of the north, and great destruction. ^6:2I have likened the daughter of Zion to a lovely and delicate woman. ^6:3The shepherds with their flocks shall come to her; they shall pitch their tents against her round about; they shall feed every one in his place, saying, ^6:4‘Prepare war against her; arise, and let us go up at noon.’” (“Woe unto us! For the day is going away: for the shadows of the evening are stretched out.”) ^6:5“‘Arise, and let us go by night, and let us destroy her palaces.’’ ^6:6For thus has Jehovah of hosts said, ‘Cut down trees, and build a siege mound against Jerusalem. This is the city to be visited; she is full of oppression in her midst. ^6:7As a fountain casts out her water, so she casts out her wickedness; violence and plunder is heard in her; before me continually is grief and wounds. ^6:8Be instructed, O Jerusalem, lest my soul departs from you, lest I make you desolate, a land not inhabited.’

^6:9“Thus says Jehovah of hosts: ‘They shall thoroughly glean the remnant of Israel as a vine; turn back your hand as a grape-gatherer into the baskets.’”

^6:10“To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? Behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot listen; behold, the Word of Jehovah is a reproach to them; they have no delight in it.” ^6:11“‘Therefore I am full of the fury of Jehovah; I am weary with holding in. I will pour it out upon the children abroad, and upon the assembly of young men together, because even the husband with the wife shall be taken, and the aged with him that is full of days; ^6:12and their houses shall be turned to others, with their fields and wives together: for I will stretch out my hand upon the inhabitants of the land,’ says Jehovah. ^6:13‘For from the least of them even to the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even to the priest everyone deals falsely. ^6:14They have also healed the hurt of my people superficially, saying, ‘Peace, peace’, when there is no peace. ^6:15Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? No, they were not at all ashamed; neither could they blush; therefore they shall fall among them that fall. At the time that I visit them they shall be cast down,’ says Jehovah.”

^6:16“Thus says Jehovah: ‘Stand in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; and you shall find rest for your souls. ^6:20“‘To what purpose does incense from Sheba, and the sweet calamus from a far country come to me? Your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor are your sacrifices sweet to me.’ ^6:21Therefore thus says Jehovah: ‘Behold, I will lay stumblingblocks before this people, and the fathers and the sons together shall fall upon them; the neighbor and his friend shall perish.’”

^6:22“Thus says Jehovah: ‘Behold, a people is coming from the north country, and a great nation shall be raised from the sides of the earth. ^6:23They shall lay hold on bow and spear; they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roars like the sea; and they ride upon horses, set in array as men for war against you, O daughter of Zion!’”

^6:24“We have heard its fame; our hands grow feeble. ^2:9“‘Por tanto, todavía yo contendré con ustedes,’ dice Jehová, ‘y con los hijos de vuestros hijos contendré: ^2:10porque pasad a las islas de Quitim y mirad; y enviad a Cedar, y considerad cuidadosamente, y ved si ha habido cosa semejante. ^2:11¿Alguna nación ha cambiado sus dioses, cual son dioses falsos? Pero mi pueblo ha cambiado su gloria por lo que no beneficia. ^2:12Asombraos, oh cielos, de esto; y tened miedo terriblemente; sé muy desolado”, dice Jehová. ^2:13‘Porque mi pueblo ha cometido dos males: me han abandonado, la Fuente de Agua Viva, y se han hecho cisternas, cisternas rotas, que no pueden contener agua.

^2:14“‘¿Es Israel siervo? ¿Es esclavo? ¿Por qué ha sido despojado? ^2:15Los cachorros de los leones rugieron sobre él, alzaron su voz; y asolaron su tierra; quemadas están sus ciudades, sin morador. ^2:16Aun los hijos de Nof y de Tafnes te quebrantaron la coronilla. ^2:17¿No te acarreaste esto tú mismo, al haber dejado a Jehová tu Dios, cuando él te guiaba por el camino? ^2:18Ahora pues, ¿qué tienes tú en el camino de Egipto, para que bebas agua del Nilo? ¿Y qué tienes tú en el camino de Asiria, para que bebas agua del río? ^2:19Tu maldad te castigará, y tus rebeldías te condenarán; sabe, pues, y ve cuán malo y amargo es el haber dejado tú a Jehová tu Dios, y faltar mi temor en ti,’ dice el Señor, Jehová de los ejércitos.

^2:20“‘Porque desde hace mucho quebré tu yugo, y rompí tus ataduras; y dijiste, ‘No serviré’. Con todo eso, sobre todo collado alto y debajo de todo árbol frondoso corrías tú, oh ramera. ^2:21Y yo te planté como una vid escogida, simiente verdadera toda ella. ¿Cómo, pues, te me has tornado sarmientos de vid extraña? ^2:22Aunque te laves con lejía, y amontones jabón sobre ti, tu pecado está sellado delante de mí,’ dice el Señor Jehová”.

^2:23“‘¿Cómo puedes decir, ‘No soy inmunda, nunca anduve tras los Baales’? Mira tu proceder en el valle, reconoce lo que has hecho, dromedaria ligera que entrevera sus caminos, ^2:24asna montés acostumbrada al desierto, que en el ardor de su deseo olfatea el viento; en su celo, ¿quién la detendrá? Todos los que la buscaren no se cansarán; la hallarán en su mes.

^2:25“‘Guarda tus pies de andar descalzos, y tu garganta de la sed; pero dijiste, ‘No hay esperanza, no: porque amo a los extraños y tras ellos he de ir’. ^2:26Como se avergüenza el ladrón cuando es tomado, así se avergonzará la casa de Israel; ellos, sus reyes, sus príncipes, sus sacerdotes y sus profetas, ^2:27que dicen al leño, ‘Mi padre eres tú’; y a la piedra, ‘Tú me has engendrado’; pues me volvieron la cerviz, y no el rostro;

“‘Pero en el tiempo de su tribulación dicen, ‘Levántate, y líbranos’. ^2:28¿Y dónde están tus dioses que hiciste para ti? Levántense, a ver si te pueden librar en el tiempo de tu aflicción: porque según el número de tus ciudades, oh Judá, fueron tus dioses. ^2:29¿Por qué contendéis conmigo? Todos ustedes prevaricasteis contra mí,’ dice Jehová. ^2:30‘Por demás he azotado vuestros hijos; no han recibido corrección. Vuestra espada devoró a vuestros profetas como león destructor’”.

^2:31“‘¡Oh generación malvada, mirad la Palabra de Jehová! ¿He sido yo a Israel soledad, o tierra de tinieblas? ¿Por qué ha dicho mi pueblo, ‘Somos señores; nunca más vendremos a ti’? ^2:32¿Se olvidará la virgen de sus adornos, o la desposada de sus atavíos? Pero mi pueblo se ha olvidado de mí por innumerables días. ^2:33¿Por qué realzas tu camino para hallar amor? Pues aun a las malvadas enseñaste tus caminos. ^2:34También en tus faldas se halló la sangre de las almas de los pobres, de los inocentes; no la hallé en indagación secreta, sino en todas estas cosas. ^2:35Y dices, ‘Porque soy inocente, de cierto su ira se desviará de mí’. He aquí yo entraré en juicio contigo: porque dijiste, ‘No he pecado’. ^2:36¿Para qué discurres tanto, mudando tus caminos? También serás avergonzada de Egipto, como fuiste avergonzada de Asiria. ^2:37También saldrás de él con tus manos sobre tu cabeza: porque Jehová desechó a aquellos en quienes confías, y no prosperarás por ellos.

^3:1“‘Dicen, ‘Si alguno dejare su esposa, y yéndose ésta de él se juntare a otro hombre, ¿volverá a ella más? ¿No será tal tierra del todo amancillada?’ Tú, pues, te has prostituido con muchos amantes; pero vuélvete a mí,’ dice Jehová. ^3:2‘Alza tus ojos a los lugares altos, y ve en qué lugar no se han acostado contigo; para ellos te sentabas en los caminos, como árabe en el desierto; y has contaminado la tierra con tu prostitución y tu maldad. ^3:3Por esta causa las aguas han sido detenidas, y faltó la lluvia tardía; y has tenido frente de ramera, y no quisiste tener vergüenza. ^3:4A lo menos desde ahora, ¿no clamarás a mí, ‘Padre mío, guiador de mi juventud? ^3:5¿Guardará su enojo para siempre? ¿Eternamente lo guardará?’ He aquí que has hablado y hecho cuantas maldades pudiste’”.

^3:6Y me dijo Jehová en días del rey Josías, “‘¿Has visto lo que ha hecho la infiel Israel? Ella se va sobre todo monte alto y debajo de todo árbol frondoso, y allí se prostituye. ^3:7Y le dije después que hizo todo esto, ‘Vuélvete a mí’; pero no se volvió. Y lo vio la rebelde su hermana Judá. ^3:8Y yo vi cuando por causa de todo esto, cometió adulterio la infiel Israel, yo la había despedido dándole carta de divorcio; y aún así no tuvo temor la rebelde Judá su hermana, sino que también ella fue y se prostituyó. ^3:9Y sucedió que por la liviandad con que se prostituyó la tierra, fue contaminada, y adulteró con la piedra y con el leño. ^3:10Y con todo esto, su hermana la rebelde Judá no se volvió a mí de todo su corazón, sino en pretensión,’ dice Jehová”.

^3:11Y me dijo Jehová, “Se ha justificado más la rebelde Israel en comparación con la desleal Judá. ^3:12Ve, y proclama estas palabras hacia el norte, y di, ‘‘Vuélvete, oh rebelde Israel,’ dice Jehová, ‘y no haré caer mi ira sobre ustedes: porque misericordioso soy yo,’ dice Jehová, ‘y no guardaré para siempre el enojo. ^3:13Sólo reconoce tu maldad: porque contra Jehová tu Dios has prevaricado, y tus caminos has derramado a los extraños debajo de todo árbol frondoso, y no oíste mi voz,’ dice Jehová. ^3:14‘Convertíos, hijos rebeldes,’ dice Jehová, ‘porque soy vuestro esposo; y os tomaré uno de una ciudad, y dos de una familia, y os introduciré en Sión. ^3:15Y os daré pastores según mi corazón, que os apacienten con conocimiento e inteligencia.

^3:16“‘Y acontecerá, que cuando os multiplicareis y creciereis en la tierra, en aquellos días,’ dice Jehová, ‘no se dirá más, ‘El arca del Pacto de Jehová’; ni vendrá al pensamiento, ni se acordarán de ella, ni la visitarán, ni la volverán a hacer. ^3:17En aquel tiempo llamarán a Jerusalén ‘El trono de Jehová’; y todas las naciones se unirán a ella en el Nombre de Jehová en Jerusalén; y no andarán más tras la dureza de su malvado corazón. ^3:18En aquellos tiempos irán de la casa de Judá a la casa de Israel, y vendrán juntamente de la tierra del norte a la tierra que hice heredar a vuestros padres’”.

^3:19“‘Pero yo dije, ‘¿Cómo he de ponerte entre los hijos, y darte la tierra deseable, la rica heredad de los ejércitos de las naciones?’ Y dije, ‘‘Padre mío’ me llamarás, y no te apartarás de en pos de mí’. ^3:20Pero como la esposa infiel quiebra la fe de su compañero, así prevaricasteis contra mí, oh casa de Israel,’ dice Jehová. ^3:21‘Voz sobre las alturas fue oída, llanto de los ruegos de los hijos de Israel: porque han torcido su camino, se han olvidado de Jehová su Dios: ^3:22‘Convertíos, hijos rebeldes, y sanaré vuestra infidelidad’”. “He aquí nosotros venimos a ti: porque tú eres Jehová nuestro Dios. ^3:23Ciertamente en vano es esperar que la salvación venga de los collados, o de la multitud de las montañas; ciertamente en Jehová nuestro Dios está la salvación de Israel. ^3:24Confusión consumió el trabajo de nuestros padres desde nuestra juventud; sus ovejas, sus vacas, sus hijos y sus hijas. ^3:25Yacemos en nuestra confusión, y nuestra afrenta nos cubre: porque pecamos contra Jehová nuestro Dios, nosotros y nuestros padres, desde nuestra juventud y hasta este día; y no hemos obedecido la voz de Jehová nuestro Dios”.

^4:1“‘Si verdaderamente regresarás, oh Israel,’ dice Jehová, ‘vuelve a mi; y si quitares de delante de mí tus abominaciones, no andarás de acá para allá. ^4:2Y jurarás, diciendo, ‘Vive Jehová’, en verdad, en juicio y en justicia; y las naciones se bendecirán en él, y en él se gloriarán’. ^4:3Porque así dice Jehová a todo varón de Judá y de Jerusalén, ‘Haced barbecho para ustedes, y no sembréis entre espinos. ^4:4Circuncidaos para Jehová, y quitad los prepucios de vuestro corazón, varones de Judá y moradores de Jerusalén; no sea que mi ira salga como fuego, y se encienda y no haya quien la apague, por la maldad de vuestras obras’”.

^4:5“‘Anunciad en Judá, y haced oír en Jerusalén, y decid, ‘¡Tocad trompeta en la tierra!’ Pregonad, juntaos, y decid, ‘¡Reuníos, y entremos en las ciudades fortificadas!’ ^4:6Alzad bandera en Sión, juntaos, no os detengáis: porque yo hago venir mal del norte, y destrucción grande. ^4:7El león sube de su guarida, y el destructor de los gentiles viene en camino; ha salido de su lugar para tornar tu tierra en desolación; tus ciudades quedarán en ruinas, y sin morador. ^4:8Por esto vestíos de cilicio, endechad y aullad: porque la ira de Jehová no se ha apartado de nosotros. ^4:9Y será en aquel día,’ dice Jehová, ‘que desfallecerá el corazón del rey, y el corazón de los príncipes, y los sacerdotes estarán atónitos, y se maravillarán los profetas’”. ^4:10Y dije, “¡Ay, ay, Jehová Dios! verdaderamente en gran manera has engañado a este pueblo y a Jerusalén, diciendo, ‘Paz tendréis’; pues la espada ha venido hasta el alma”.

^4:11“En aquel tiempo se dirá de este pueblo y de Jerusalén, ‘Viento seco de las alturas del desierto vino a la hija de mi pueblo’, no para aventar, ni para limpiar. ^4:12Viento más vehemente que éste vendrá a mí; y ahora yo pronunciaré juicios contra ellos. ^4:13He aquí que subirá como nube, y su carro como torbellino; sus caballos son más ligeros que las águilas”. “¡Ay de nosotros: porque hemos sido saqueados!”.

^4:14“‘Lava tu corazón de maldad, oh Jerusalén, para que seas salva. ¿Hasta cuándo permanecerán en medio de ti los pensamientos de iniquidad? ^4:15Porque una voz proclama desde Dan, y anuncia calamidad desde el monte de Efraín: ^4:16‘¡Decid a las naciones; he aquí, haced oír sobre Jerusalén, guardas vienen de tierra lejana, y darán su voz sobre las ciudades de Judá!’ ^4:17Como guardas de campo, estuvieron contra ella en derredor: porque ha sido rebelde contra mí,’ dice Jehová. ^4:18‘Tu camino y tus obras te hicieron esto, ésta es tu maldad; por lo cual amargura penetrará hasta tu corazón’”.

^4:19“¡Mis entrañas, mis entrañas! ¡Me duelen las fibras de mi corazón; mi corazón se agita dentro de mí; no callaré: porque voz de trompeta has oído, oh alma mía, pregón de guerra! ^4:20Destrucción tras destrucción es anunciada: porque toda la tierra es devastada; de repente son destruidas mis tiendas, en un momento mis cortinas. ^4:21¿Hasta cuándo he de ver bandera, y he de oír sonido de trompeta?

^4:22“Porque mi pueblo es necio; no me han conocido, son hijos ignorantes y sin entendimiento; son sabios para hacer el mal, pero hacer el bien no lo saben”.

¶Lo opuesto   El pueblo de Israel y Judá rehusaron arrepentirse de sus pecados (4:23 - 5:19)

^4:23“‘Miré la tierra, y he aquí que estaba desordenada y vacía; y los cielos, y no había en ellos luz. ^4:24Miré los montes, y he aquí que temblaban, y todos los collados fueron destruidos. ^4:25Miré, y no había hombre alguno, y todas las aves del cielo se habían ido. ^4:26Miré, y he aquí la tierra fértil era un desierto, y todas sus ciudades estaban asoladas a la presencia de Jehová, delante del furor de su ira’. ^4:27Porque así dice Jehová, ‘Toda la tierra será asolada; pero no haré consumación. ^4:28Por esto se enlutará la tierra, y los cielos arriba se oscurecerán: porque hablé, lo determiné, y no me arrepentiré, ni me retraeré de ello. ^4:29Por el estruendo de la gente de a caballo y de los arqueros huirá toda la ciudad; entrarán en las espesuras de los bosques, y subirán a los peñascos; todas las ciudades serán abandonadas, y no quedará en ellas morador alguno. ^4:30Y tú, asolada, ¿qué harás? Aunque te vistas de grana, aunque te adornes con atavíos de oro, aunque pintes con antimonio tus ojos, en vano te engalanas; te menospreciaron tus amantes, buscarán tu vida: ^4:31porque oí una voz como de mujer que está de parto, angustia como de primeriza; voz de la hija de Sión que lamenta y extiende sus manos, diciendo, ‘¡Ay ahora de mí! Que mi alma desmaya a causa de los asesinos’.

^5:1“‘Recorred las calles de Jerusalén, y mirad ahora, y sabed, y buscad en sus plazas si podéis hallar algún hombre, si hay alguno que haga juicio, que busque verdad; y yo la perdonaré. ^5:2Y aunque digan, ‘Vive Jehová’; ciertamente juran falsamente’”.

^5:3“Oh Jehová, ¿no miran tus ojos a la verdad? Los azotaste, y no les dolió; los consumiste, pero no quisieron recibir corrección; endurecieron sus rostros más que la piedra, no quisieron arrepentirse. ^5:4Pero yo dije, ‘Ciertamente ellos son pobres, han enloquecido, pues no conocen el camino de Jehová, el juicio de su Dios. ^5:5Me iré a los grandes, y les hablaré: porque ellos conocen el camino de Jehová, el juicio de su Dios’. Pero ellos también quebraron el yugo y rompieron las coyundas. ^5:6Por tanto, el león de la selva los herirá, los destruirá el lobo del desierto, el leopardo acechará sobre sus ciudades; cualquiera que de ellas saliere, será despedazado: porque sus rebeliones se han multiplicado, se han aumentado sus deslealtades”.

^5:7“‘¿Cómo te he de perdonar por esto? Tus hijos me dejaron, y juraron por lo que no es Dios. Los sacié, y adulteraron, y en casa de rameras se juntaron en compañías. ^5:8Como caballos bien alimentados de mañana, cada cual relinchaba tras la esposa de su prójimo. ^5:9¿No he de castigar por esto?’ dice Jehová. ‘De una gente como ésta ¿no se ha de vengar mi alma? ^5:10Escalad sus muros, y destruid; pero no hagáis consumación; quitad las almenas de sus muros: porque no son de Jehová: ^5:11porque resueltamente se rebelaron contra mí la casa de Israel y la casa de Judá,’ dice Jehová. ^5:12‘Negaron a Jehová, y dijeron, ‘Él no es, y no vendrá mal sobre nosotros, ni veremos espada ni hambre; ^5:13y los profetas serán como el viento, y no hay en ellos Palabra; así se hará a ellos’’.

^5:14“Por tanto, así dice Jehová Dios de los ejércitos, ‘¡Porque hablasteis esta palabra, he aquí yo pongo mis palabras en tu boca por fuego, y a este pueblo por leña, y los consumirá! ^5:15He aquí yo traigo sobre ustedes gente de lejos, oh casa de Israel,’ dice Jehová; ‘gente robusta, gente antigua, gente cuya lengua ignorarás, y no entenderás lo que hablare. ^5:16Su aljaba es como sepulcro abierto, todos ellos son valientes. ^5:17Y comerán tu mies y tu pan, que habían de comer tus hijos y tus hijas; comerán tus ovejas y tus vacas, comerán tus viñas y tus higueras; y a espada destruirán tus ciudades fuertes en que tú confías. ^5:18Pero en aquellos días,’ dice Jehová, no os destruiré del todo’. ^5:19Y será que cuando dijereis, ‘¿Por qué Jehová el Dios nuestro hace con nosotros todas estas cosas?’, entonces les dirás, ‘De la manera que me dejasteis a mí, y servisteis a dioses ajenos en vuestra tierra, así servirás a extraños en una tierra que no es tuya’”.

§El complemento   Conclusión: El pueblo de Israel y Judá están maduras para el juicio de Dios (5:20 - 6:30)

¶El complemento   Los oídos de las personas están incircuncisos y no pueden escuchar la Palabra de Dios (5:20 - 6:15)

^5:20“Anunciad esto en la casa de Jacob, y haced que esto se oiga en Judá, diciendo, ^5:21‘Oíd ahora esto, pueblo necio y sin corazón, que tiene ojos y no ve, que tiene oídos y no oye. ^5:22¿A mí no me temeréis?’ dice Jehová; ‘¿No os amedrentaréis ante mi presencia, que al mar puse arena por término por ordenación eterna, la cual no quebrantará? Se levantarán tempestades, pero no prevalecerán; bramarán sus ondas, pero no lo pasarán.

^5:23“‘Pero este pueblo tiene corazón falso y rebelde; se volvieron y se fueron. ^5:24Y no dijeron en su corazón, ‘Temamos ahora a Jehová Dios nuestro, que da lluvia temprana y tardía en su tiempo; él nos guarda los tiempos establecidos de la siega’. ^5:25Vuestras iniquidades han estorbado estas cosas; y vuestros pecados detuvieron de ustedes el bien: ^5:26porque fueron hallados en mi pueblo hombres impíos; acechan como quien pone lazos; ponen trampa para cazar hombres. ^5:27Como jaula llena de pájaros, así están sus casas llenas de engaño; así se hicieron grandes y ricos. ^5:28Engordaron y se pusieron lustrosos, y sobrepasaron los hechos del malo; no juzgaron la causa, la causa del huérfano; con todo, se hicieron prósperos, y la causa de los pobres no juzgaron. ^5:29¿No he de castigar por esto?’ dice Jehová; ‘¿y de tal nación no se vengará mi alma? ^5:30Cosa espantosa y fea es hecha en la tierra: ^5:31los profetas profetizaron mentira, y los sacerdotes dirigían por su propia mano; y mi pueblo así lo quiso. ¿Qué, pues, haréis al final de esto?’”.

^6:1“Huid, hijos de Benjamín, de en medio de Jerusalén, y tocad bocina en Tecoa, y alzad por señal humo sobre Bet-haquerem: porque del norte se ve venir el mal, y destrucción grande. ^6:2A mujer hermosa y delicada com paré a la hija de Sión. ^6:3A ella vendrán pastores y sus rebaños; junto a ella en derredor pondrán sus tiendas; cada uno apacentará en su lugar. ^6:4Declarad guerra contra ella; levantaos y asaltémosla al mediodía’”. “¡Ay de nosotros! Que va cayendo ya el día, que las sombras de la tarde se han extendido”. ^6:5“‘Levantaos, y subamos de noche, y destruyamos sus palacios: ^6:6porque así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, ‘Cortad árboles, y levantad baluarte junto a Jerusalén; ésta es la ciudad que toda ella ha de ser castigada; toda ella está llena de violencia. ^6:7Como la fuente nunca cesa de manar sus aguas, así ella nunca cesa de manar su maldad; injusticia y robo se oye en ella; continuamente en mi presencia, enfermedad y herida. ^6:8Corrígete, Jerusalén, para que no se aparte mi alma de ti, para que no te convierta en desierto, en tierra inhabitada’.

^6:9“Así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, ‘Del todo rebuscarán como a vid al remanente de Israel; vuelve tu mano como vendimiador a los cestos’”.

^6:10“‘¿A quién debo de hablar y amonestar, para que oigan? He aquí que sus oídos son incircuncisos, y no pueden escuchar; he aquí que la Palabra de Jehová les es cosa vergonzosa, no la aman”. ^6:11“‘Por tanto, estoy lleno de la ira de Jehová, cansado estoy de contenerme; la derramaré sobre los niños en la calle, y sobre la reunión de los jóvenes juntamente: porque el marido también será preso con la esposa, el viejo con el lleno de días. ^6:12Y sus casas serán traspasadas a otros, sus heredades y también sus esposas: porque extenderé mi mano sobre los moradores de la tierra,’ dice Jehová. ^6:13‘Porque desde el más chico de ellos hasta el más grande de ellos, cada uno sigue la avaricia; y desde el profeta hasta el sacerdote, todos son engañadores. ^6:14Y curan el quebrantamiento de la hija de mi pueblo con liviandad, diciendo, ‘Paz, paz’; y no hay paz. ^6:15¿Se han avergonzado de haber hecho abominación? Ciertamente no se han avergonzado, ni siquiera se han ruborizado; por tanto, caerán entre los que caigan; cuando los castigue, caerán,’ dice Jehová”.

¶El complemento   El pueblo de Israel y Judá son como plata sin valor (6:16 - 30)

^6:16“Así dice Jehová, ‘Paraos en los caminos, y mirad, y preguntad por las sendas antiguas, cuál es el buen camino, y andad por él, y hallaréis descanso para vuestra alma. Pero dijeron, ‘No andaremos’. ^6:17Puse también atalayas sobre ustedes, que dijesen, ‘¡Escuchad el sonido de la trompeta!’ Y dijeron ellos, ‘No escucharemos’. ^6:18Por tanto oíd, naciones, y entended, oh congregación, lo que hay entre ellos. ^6:19Oye, tierra. He aquí yo traigo mal sobre este pueblo, el fruto de sus pensamientos: porque no atendieron a mis palabras, y aborrecieron mi Ley.

^6:20“‘¿Para qué viene a mí este incienso de Seba, y la caña olorosa de tierra lejana? Vuestros holocaustos no son aceptables, ni vuestros sacrificios me agradan’. ^6:21Por tanto, Jehová dice esto, ‘He aquí yo pongo a este pueblo piedras de tropiezo, y caerán en ellas los padres y los hijos juntamente, el vecino y su compañero perecerán’”.

^6:22“Así dice Jehová, ‘¡He aquí que viene pueblo de la tierra del norte, y una nación grande se levantará de los confines de la tierra. ^6:23Arco y lanza empuñarán; crueles son, y no tendrán misericordia; sonará la voz de ellos como el mar, y montarán a caballo como hombres dispuestos para la guerra, contra ti, oh hija de Sión!’”

^6:24“Su fama hemos oído, y nuestras manos se descoyuntan; angustia se apodera de nosotros, dolor como de mujer que está de parto. ^6:25No salgas al campo, ni andes por el camino: porque espada de enemigo y temor hay por todas partes. ^6:26Hija de mi pueblo, cíñete de cilicio, y revuélcate en ceniza; haz luto como por hijo único, llanto de amarguras: porque pronto vendrá sobre nosotros el destructor”.

^6:27“Por fortaleza te he puesto en mi pueblo, y por torre; conocerás pues, y examinarás el camino de ellos. ^6:28Todos ellos son rebeldes obstinados, andan con calumniadores; son bronce y hierro; todos ellos son corruptores. ^6:29Se quemó el fuelle, por el fuego se ha consumido el plomo; por demás fundió el fundidor, pues los malvados no han sido desarraigados. ^6:30Plata desechada los llamarán: porque Jehová los desechó”.
