Publish, and do not conceal; say, ‘Babylon is taken; Bel is ashamed; Merodach is broken in pieces; her idols are ashamed; her images are broken in pieces! ^50:3For out of the north a nation is coming up against her, which shall make her land desolate; and no one shall dwell in it; they shall remove, and they shall depart, both man and beast.

^50:4“‘In those days, and in that time,’ says Jehovah, ‘the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together, going and weeping; they shall go, and seek Jehovah their God. ^50:5They shall ask the way to Zion with their faces in that direction, saying, ‘Come, and let us join ourselves to Jehovah in a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten.’

^50:6“‘My people have been lost sheep. Their shepherds have caused them to go astray; they have turned them away on the mountains; they have gone from mountain to hill; they have forgotten their resting place. ^50:7All that found them have devoured them; and their adversaries said, ‘We do not offend, because they have sinned against Jehovah, the habitation of justice; even Jehovah, the hope of their fathers.’”

^50:8“‘Go out of the midst of Babylon, and go forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as the male goats before the flocks: ^50:9for, lo, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the north country; and they shall set themselves in array against her. She shall be captured from there. Their arrows shall be as of a mighty expert man; none shall return in vain. ^50:10And Chaldea shall be a plunder; all that plunder her shall be satisfied,’ says Jehovah.

^50:11“‘Because you were glad, because you rejoiced, O you destroyers of my heritage, because you have grown fat as the heifer at grass, and bellow as bulls, ^50:12your mother shall be greatly ashamed; yea, she that bore you shall be ashamed. Behold, the hindermost of the nations shall be a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert. ^50:13Because of the wrath of Jehovah it shall not be inhabited, but it shall be wholly desolate; everyone that goes by Babylon shall be astonished, and whistle at all her plagues.’”

^50:14“‘Put yourselves in array against Babylon round about; all you that bend the bow, shoot at her, and spare no arrows, because she has sinned against Jehovah. ^50:15Shout against her round about. She has given her hand; her foundations are fallen, and her walls are thrown down: for it is the vengeance of Jehovah. Take vengeance upon her; as she has done, so do to her. ^50:16Cut off the sower from Babylon, and him that handles the sickle in the time of harvest. For fear of the oppressing sword they shall turn every one to his people; and they shall flee every one to his own land.

^50:17“‘Israel is a scattered sheep; the lions have driven him away; first the king of Assyria has devoured him, and last this Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon has broken his bones.’ ^50:18Therefore thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, I will punish the king of Babylon and his land, as I have punished the king of Assyria. ^50:19And I will bring Israel again to his habitation; and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul shall be satisfied upon mount Ephraim and Gilead. ^50:20In those days, and in that time,’ says Jehovah, ‘the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will pardon them whom I reserve.’”

^50:21“‘Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod. Waste and utterly destroy after them,’ says Jehovah, ‘and do according to all that I have commanded you. ^50:22A sound of battle is in the land, and of great destruction. ^50:23How is the hammer of the whole earth cut apart and broken! How has Babylon become a desolation among the nations! ^50:24I have laid a snare for you, and you are also taken, O Babylon, and you were not aware. You are found, and also caught, because you have striven against Jehovah. ^50:25Jehovah has opened his armory, and has brought forth the weapons of his indignation: for this is the work of the Lord Jehovah of hosts in the land of the Chaldeans. ^50:26Come against her from the utmost border, and open her storehouses. Cast her up as heaps, and utterly destroy her; let nothing of her be left. ^50:27Slay all her bulls; let them go down to the slaughter. Woe to them! For their day has come, the time of their visitation. ^50:28The voice of them that flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of Jehovah our God, the vengeance of his Temple. ^50:29Call together the archers against Babylon! All you that bend the bow, camp against it round about, and let no one of it escape. Repay her according to her work; according to all that she has done, do to her, because she has been proud against Jehovah, against the Holy One of Israel. ^50:30Therefore shall her young men fall in the streets, and all her men of war shall be cut off in that day,’ says Jehovah. ^50:31‘Behold, I am against you, O you most proud,’ says the Lord Jehovah of hosts, ‘for your day has come, the time that I will visit you. ^50:32And the most proud shall stumble and fall, and no one shall raise him up; and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all round about him.’

^50:33“Thus says Jehovah of hosts: ‘The children of Israel and the children of Judah were oppressed together. And all that took them captives held them fast; they refused to let them go. ^50:34But their Redeemer is strong, and Jehovah of hosts is his Name; he shall thoroughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the land, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.

^50:35“‘A sword is upon the Chaldeans,’ says Jehovah, ‘and upon the inhabitants of Babylon, and upon her princes, and upon her wise men. ^50:36A sword is upon the liars, and they shall be fools. A sword is upon her mighty men, and they shall be dismayed. ^50:37A sword is upon their horses, and upon their chariots, and upon all the mingled people that are in the midst of her; and they shall become as women. A sword is upon her treasures, and they shall be robbed. ^50:38A drought is upon her waters, and they shall be dried up: for it is the land of carved images, and they are insane upon their idols. ^50:39Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wild beasts of the islands shall dwell there, and the owls shall dwell in it; and it shall not be inhabited anymore forever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation. ^50:40As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and its neighbor cities,’ says Jehovah, ‘so no man shall stay there; neither shall any son of man dwell in it.’”

^50:41“‘Behold, a people shall come from the north, and a great nation; and many kings shall be raised up from the ends of the earth. ^50:42They shall hold the bow and the lance; they are cruel, and will not show mercy; their voice shall roar like the sea, and they shall ride upon horses, everyone put in array, like a man to the battle, against you, O daughter of Babylon! ^50:43The king of Babylon has heard the report of them, and his hands grew feeble. Anguish took hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in travail. ^50:44Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan to the habitation of the strong; but I will make them suddenly run away from her. And who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? For who is like me? And who will appoint me the time? And who is that shepherd that will stand before me?’

^50:45“Therefore hear the counsel of Jehovah, that he has taken against Babylon; and his purposes, that he has purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: ‘Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out; surely he shall make their habitation desolate with them. ^50:46At the noise of the taking of Babylon the earth is moved; and the cry is heard among the nations.’

^51:1“Thus says Jehovah: ‘Behold, I will raise up against Babylon, and against them that dwell in the midst of them that rise up against me, a destroying wind; ^51:2and I will send to Babylon fanners, that shall fan her, and shall empty her land: for in the day of trouble they shall be against her round about. ^51:3Against him that bends the bow, let the archer bend his bow, and against him that lifts himself up in his armor; and spare not her young men: utterly destroy all her army. ^51:4Thus the slain shall fall in the land of the Chaldeans, and they that are thrust through in her streets: ^51:5for Israel has not been forsaken, nor Judah of his God, by Jehovah of hosts, though their land was filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel.’”

^51:6“‘Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul; be not cut off in her iniquity: for this is the time of Jehovah's vengeance; he will render to her a recompense. ^51:7Babylon has been a golden cup in Jehovah's hand, that made all the earth drunk. The nations have drunk of her wine; therefore the nations are insane. ^51:8Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed. Howl for her; take balm for her pain, if perhaps she may be healed. ^51:9We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed. Forsake her, and let us go everyone into his own country: for her judgment reaches to Heaven, and is lifted up even to the skies.

^51:10“‘Jehovah has brought forth our righteousness. Come, and let us declare in Zion the work of Jehovah our God.’”

^51:11“‘Make bright the arrows, gather the shields. Jehovah has raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes: for his plan is against Babylon, to destroy it, because it is the vengeance of Jehovah, and the vengeance of his Temple. ^51:12Set up the standard upon the walls of Babylon, make the watch strong, set up the watchmen, and prepare the ambushes: for Jehovah has both devised and done that which he spoke against the inhabitants of Babylon. ^51:13O you that dwell upon many waters, abundant in treasures, your end has come, and the measure of your covetousness. ^51:14Jehovah of hosts has sworn by himself, saying, ‘Surely I will fill you with men, as with caterpillars; and they shall lift up a shout against you.’’

^51:15“‘He has made the earth by his power; he has established the world by his wisdom; and has stretched out the heaven by his understanding. ^51:16When he utters his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens; and he causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning with rain, and brings forth the wind out of his treasures.’”

^51:17“‘Every man is stupid by his knowledge; every goldsmith is ashamed by the engraved image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them. ^51:18They are vanity, the work of errors; in the time of their visitation they shall perish.

^51:19“‘The Portion of Jacob is not like them: for he is the Maker of all things, and Israel is the rod of his inheritance; Jehovah of hosts is his Name.

^51:20“‘You are my battle-ax and weapons of war: for with you will I break in pieces the nations, and with you will I destroy kingdoms; ^51:21and with you will I break in pieces the horse and his rider; and with you will I break in pieces the chariot and his rider; ^51:22with you also will I break in pieces man and woman; and with you will I break in pieces old and young; and with you will I break in pieces the young man and the virgin; ^51:23I will also break in pieces with you the shepherd and his flock; and with you will I break in pieces the farmer and his yoke of oxen; and with you will I break in pieces captains and rulers; ^51:24and I will render to Babylon and to all the inhabitants of Chaldea all their evil that they have done in Zion in your sight,’ says Jehovah.”

^51:25“‘Behold, I am against you, O destroying mountain,’ says Jehovah, ‘which destroys all the earth; and I will stretch out my hand upon you, and roll you down from the rocks, and will make you a burnt mountain. ^51:26And they shall not take of you a stone for a corner, nor a stone for foundations; but you shall be desolate forever,’ says Jehovah.

^51:27“‘Set up a standard in the land, blow the trumpet among the nations, prepare the nations against her, and call together against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashchenaz; appoint a captain against her; cause the horses to come up as the rough caterpillars. ^51:28Prepare against her the nations with the kings of the Medes, its captains, and all its rulers, and all the land of his dominion. ^51:29And the land shall tremble and sorrow, because every purpose of Jehovah shall be performed against Babylon: to make the land of Babylon a desolation without an inhabitant.

^51:30“‘The mighty men of Babylon have forborne to fight; they have remained in their holds; their might has failed; they became as women; they have burned her dwelling places, and her bars are broken. ^51:31One runner shall run to meet another, and one messenger to meet another, to show the king of Babylon that his city is taken at one end, ^51:32and that the passages are stopped, and they have burned the reeds with fire, and the men of war are terrified.’ ^51:33For thus says Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘The daughter of Babylon is like a threshingfloor; it is time to thresh her; yet a little while, and the time of her harvest shall come.’”

^51:34“‘Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon has devoured me; he has crushed me; he has made me an empty vessel; he has swallowed me up like a dragon; he has filled his belly with my delicates. He has cast me out. ^51:35The violence done to me and to my flesh be upon Babylon,’ shall the inhabitant of Zion say; ‘and my blood be upon the inhabitants of Chaldea,’ shall Jerusalem say.

^51:36“Therefore thus says Jehovah: ‘Behold, I will plead your cause, and take vengeance for you; and I will dry up her sea, and make her springs dry. ^51:37And Babylon shall become heaps, a dwelling place for dragons, an astonishment, and a mockery, without an inhabitant. ^51:38They shall roar together like lions; they shall yelp as lions' cubs. ^51:39In their heat will I make their feasts; and I will make them drunk, that they may rejoice, and sleep a perpetual sleep, and not awake,’ says Jehovah. ^51:40‘I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams with male goats.’”

¶Complement   Jehovah will execute judgment upon the carved images of Babylon (51:41 - 58)

^51:41“‘How is Sheshach taken! And how is the praise of the whole earth surprised! How has Babylon become an astonishment among the nations! ^51:42The sea has come up upon Babylon; she is covered with the multitude of its waves. ^51:43Her cities are a desolation, a dry land, and a wilderness: a land that no man dwells in; neither does any son of man pass thereby. ^51:44And I will punish Bel in Babylon, and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he has swallowed up. And the nations shall not flow together anymore to him; moreover, the wall of Babylon shall fall.

^51:45“‘My people, go out of her midst, and deliver every man his soul from the fierce anger of Jehovah. ^51:46And lest your heart faint, and you fear for the news that shall be heard in the land, a report shall both come one year, and after that in another year shall come a report, and violence in the land, ruler against ruler.

^51:47“‘Therefore, behold, the days are coming, that I will do judgment upon the carved images of Babylon; and her whole land shall be ashamed, and all her slain shall fall in her midst. ^51:48Then the heaven and the earth, and all that is in it, shall sing for Babylon: for the plunderers shall come to her from the north,’ says Jehovah. ^51:49‘As Babylon has caused the slain of Israel to fall, so at Babylon shall fall the slain of all the land.’”

^51:50“‘You that have escaped the sword, go away, and do not stand still. Remember Jehovah afar off, and let Jerusalem come into your mind.’” ^51:51“We are ashamed, because we have heard reproach; shame has covered our faces: for strangers have come into the Sanctuaries of the House of Jehovah.”

^51:52“‘Therefore, behold, the days are coming,’ says Jehovah, ‘that I will do judgment upon her carved images; and through all her land the wounded shall groan. ^51:53Though Babylon should mount up to Heaven, and though she should fortify the height of her strength, yet from me shall plunderers come to her,’ says Jehovah. ^51:54‘A sound of a cry comes from Babylon, and great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans, ^51:55because Jehovah has plundered Babylon, and destroyed out of her the great voice. When her waves roar like great water, a noise of their voice is uttered, ^51:56because the plunderer has come upon her, even upon Babylon. And her mighty men are taken; every one of their bows is broken: for Jehovah God of recompenses shall surely repay. ^51:57And I will make drunk her princes, and her wise men, her captains, and her rulers, and her mighty men; and they shall sleep a perpetual sleep, and not awake,’ says the King, whose Name is Jehovah of hosts. ^51:58Thus says Jehovah of hosts: ‘The broad walls of Babylon shall be utterly broken; and her high gates shall be burned with fire; and the people shall labor in vain, and the folk in the fire, and they shall be weary!’”

¶Unique   Jeremiah commanded Seraiah to read his prophecies against Babylon and cast it into the Euphrates river (51:59 - 64)

^51:59The Word which Jeremiah the Prophet commanded Seraiah the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, when he went with Zedekiah the king of Judah into Babylon in the fourth year of his reign.

And this Seraiah was a quiet prince.

^51:60So Jeremiah wrote in a Book all the evil that should come upon Babylon, even all these words that are written against Babylon. ^51:61And Jeremiah said to Seraiah, “When you come to Babylon, and shall see, and shall read all these words, ^51:62then shall you say, ‘O Jehovah, you have spoken against this place, to cut it off, that no one shall remain in it; neither man nor beast, but that it shall be desolate forever.’

^51:63And it shall be, when you have made an end of reading this Book, that you shall bind a stone to it, and cast it into the midst of Euphrates. ^51:64And you shall say, ‘In this manner shall Babylon sink, and shall not arise from the evil that I will bring upon her; and they shall be weary!’”

Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.

^52:1Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah. ^52:2And he did that which was evil in the eyes of Jehovah, according to all that Jehoiakim had done: ^52:3for through the anger of Jehovah it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah, until he had cast them out from his presence, that Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.

^52:4And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came, he and all his army, against Jerusalem. And they camped against it; and built a siege wall against it round about. ^52:5So the city was besieged until the eleventh year of king Zedekiah.

^52:6And in the fourth month, in the ninth day of the month, the famine was intense in the city, so that there was no bread for the people of the land. ^52:7Then the city wall was broken through; and all the men of war fled. And they went forth out of the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king's garden (now the Chaldeans were by the city round about); and they went by the way of the plain.

^52:8But the army of the Chaldeans pursued after the king, and they overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho; and all his army was scattered from him.

^52:9Then they took the king; and they carried him up to the king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath, where he gave judgment upon him; ^52:10and the king of Babylon executed the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes; also he slew all the princes of Judah in Riblah. ^52:11Then he put out the eyes of Zedekiah; and the king of Babylon bound him in chains, and carried him to Babylon. And he put him in prison until the day of his death.

^52:12Now in the fifth month, in the tenth day of the month, which was the nineteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, Nebuzar-adan, captain of the guard, who served the king of Babylon, came into Jerusalem; ^52:13and he burned the House of Jehovah; and the king's house, and all the houses of Jerusalem, and all the houses of the great men, he burned with fire. ^52:14And all the army of the Chaldeans that were with the captain of the guard broke down all the walls of Jerusalem round about.

^52:15Then Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carried away captive some of the poor of the people, and the rest of the people that remained in the city, and those that fell away, that fell to the king of Babylon, and the rest of the multitude. ^52:16But Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard left a few of the poor of the land for vinedressers and for farmers. ^52:17Also the Chaldeans broke the pillars of bronze that were in the House of Jehovah, and the bases, and the bronze sea that was in the House of Jehovah, and carried all the bronze of them to Babylon. ^52:18Also they took away the caldrons, the shovels, the snuffers, the bowls, the spoons, and all the vessels of bronze with which they ministered. ^52:19And the basins, the fire pans, the bowls, the caldrons, the candlesticks, the spoons, and the cups: that which was of gold in gold, and that which was of silver in silver, the captain of the guard took them away. ^52:20The two pillars, one sea, and twelve bronze bulls that were under the bases, which king Solomon had made in the House of Jehovah; the bronze of all these vessels was immeasurable. ^52:21And concerning the pillars, the height of one pillar was eighteen cubits; and it had a fillet of twelve cubits in circumference; and its thickness was four fingers; it was hollow. ^52:22And a capital of bronze was upon it; and the height of one capital was five cubits, with network and pomegranates upon the capitals round about, all of bronze. The second pillar also and the pomegranates were like these. ^52:23And there were ninety-six pomegranates on a side; and all the pomegranates upon the network were one hundred round about.

^52:24And the captain of the guard took Seraiah the chief priest, and Zephaniah the second priest, and the three keepers of the door. ^52:25Also he took out of the city a eunuch, who had the charge of the men of war; and seven men of them that were near the king's person, who were found in the city; and the principal scribe of the army, who mustered the people of the land; and sixty men of the people of the land, that were found in the midst of the city. ^52:26So Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard took them, and brought them to the king of Babylon to Riblah. ^52:27And the king of Babylon smote them, and put them to death in Riblah in the land of Hamath. Thus Judah was carried away captive out of his own land.

^52:28This is the number of people whom Nebuchadrezzar carried away captive in the seventh year: three thousand and twenty-three Jews. ^52:29In the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar he carried away captive from Jerusalem eight hundred and thirty-two persons. ^52:30And in the twenty-third year of Nebuchadrezzar Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carried away captive of the Jews seven hundred and forty-five persons: all the persons were four thousand and six hundred.

^52:31And it came to pass in the thirty-seventh year of the captivity of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, in the twenty-fifth day of the month, that Evil-merodach king of Babylon in the first year of his reign lifted up the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah. And he brought him forth out of prison; ^52:32and he spoke kindly to him; and he set his throne above the throne of the kings that were with him in Babylon. ^52:33And he changed his prison garments. And he continually ate bread before him all the days of his life. ^52:34And for his diet, there was a regular ration given him by the king of Babylon, every day a portion until the day of his death, all the days of his life.

^50:1Palabra que habló Jehová contra Babilonia, y contra la tierra de los caldeos, por medio del Profeta Jeremías: ^50:2“‘Anunciad entre las naciones, proclamad y levantad bandera; publicad, y no encubráis; decid, ‘¡Tomada es Babilonia, Bel es confundido, deshecho es Merodac; confundidas son sus esculturas, quebrados son sus ídolos! ^50:3Porque una nación del norte subirá contra ella, la cual pondrá su tierra en asolamiento, y no habrá ni hombre ni animal que en ella more; tanto hombres como animales se irán.

^50:4“‘En aquellos días y en aquel tiempo,’ dice Jehová, ‘vendrán los hijos de Israel, ellos y los hijos de Judá juntamente; e irán andando y llorando, y buscarán a Jehová su Dios. ^50:5Preguntarán por el camino de Sión, hacia donde volverán sus rostros, diciendo, ‘Venid y unámonos a Jehová, con un Pacto eterno que jamás será olvidado’.

^50:6“‘Ovejas perdidas fueron mi pueblo. Sus pastores las hicieron errar; por los montes las descarriaron; anduvieron de monte en collado; se olvidaron de sus majadas. ^50:7Todos los que los hallaban, los comían; y decían sus enemigos, ‘No pecamos: porque ellos pecaron contra Jehová morada de justicia, contra Jehová, esperanza de sus padres’”.

^50:8“‘Huid de en medio de Babilonia, y salid de la tierra de los caldeos, y sed como los machos cabríos delante del ganado: ^50:9porque he aquí que yo levanto y hago subir contra Babilonia reunión de grandes pueblos de la tierra del norte; y desde allí se prepararán contra ella, y será tomada; sus flechas como de valiente diestro; ninguno se volverá vacío. ^50:10Y Caldea será para despojo; todos los que la saquearen, quedarán saciados,’ dice Jehová.

^50:11“‘Porque os alegrasteis, porque os gozasteis destruyendo mi heredad, porque os llenasteis como becerra sobre la hierba, y mugís como toros. ^50:12Vuestra madre será en gran manera avergonzada, se avergonzará la que os engendró; he aquí la última de las naciones será un desierto, tierra seca, y páramo. ^50:13Por la ira de Jehová no será habitada, sino será asolada toda ella; todo hombre que pasare por Babilonia se asombrará, y silbará sobre todas sus plagas.

^50:14“‘Apercibíos contra Babilonia alrededor, todos los que entesáis arco; tirad contra ella, no escatiméis las saetas: porque pecó contra Jehová. ^50:15Gritad contra ella en derredor; se rindió; han caído sus fundamentos, derribados son sus muros: porque venganza es de Jehová. Tomad venganza de ella; haced con ella como ella hizo. ^50:16Talad de Babilonia al sembrador, y al que mete hoz en tiempo de la siega; delante de la espada opresora cada uno volverá el rostro hacia su pueblo, cada uno huirá hacia su tierra.

^50:17“‘Oveja descarriada es Israel; leones lo dispersaron; el rey de Asiria lo devoró primero; este Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia lo deshuesó después’. ^50:18Por tanto, así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, ‘He aquí que yo castigaré al rey de Babilonia y a su tierra como castigué al rey de Asiria. ^50:19Y volveré a traer a Israel a su morada, y pacerá en el Carmelo y en Basán; y en el monte de Efraín y de Galaad su alma será saciada. ^50:20En aquellos días y en aquel tiempo,’ dice Jehová, ‘la maldad de Israel será buscada, y no aparecerá; y los pecados de Judá, y no se hallarán: porque perdonaré a los que yo hubiere dejado’”.

^50:21“‘Sube contra la tierra de Merataim, contra ella, y contra los moradores de Pekod. Destruye y mata en pos de ellos,’ dice Jehová, ‘y haz conforme a todo lo que yo te he mandado. ^50:22Estruendo de guerra hay en la tierra, y destrucción grande. ^50:23¡Cómo fue cortado y quebrado el martillo de toda la tierra! ¡Cómo se convirtió Babilonia en desierto entre las naciones! ^50:24Te puse lazos, y aun fuiste tomada, oh Babilonia, y tú no lo supiste; fuiste hallada, y aun presa: porque provocaste a Jehová. ^50:25Jehová ha abierto su arsenal, y ha sacado las armas de su indignación: porque ésta es obra de Jehová, Dios de los ejércitos, en la tierra de los caldeos. ^50:26Venid contra ella desde el extremo de la tierra; abrid sus almacenes; convertidla en montones, y destruidla; y no quede nada de ella. ^50:27Matad todos sus novillos; que vayan al matadero. ¡Ay de ellos! porque ha venido su día, el tiempo de su castigo. ^50:28Voz de los que huyen y escapan de la tierra de Babilonia, para dar las nuevas en Sión de la venganza de Jehová nuestro Dios, de la venganza de su Templo. ^50:29Haced juntar contra Babilonia arqueros, a todos los que entesan arco; acampad contra ella alrededor; no escape de ella ninguno; pagadle según su obra; conforme a todo lo que ella hizo, haced con ella: porque contra Jehová se ensoberbeció, contra el Santo de Israel. ^50:30Por tanto, sus jóvenes caerán en sus calles, y todos sus hombres de guerra serán talados en aquel día,’ dice Jehová. ^50:31‘He aquí yo contra ti, oh soberbio, dice el Señor, Jehová de los ejércitos: porque tu día ha venido, el tiempo en que te visitaré. ^50:32Y el soberbio tropezará y caerá, y no tendrá quien lo levante; y encenderé fuego en sus ciudades, y quemaré todos sus alrededores’.

^50:33“Así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, ‘Oprimidos fueron los hijos de Israel y los hijos de Judá juntamente; y todos los que los tomaron cautivos, los retuvieron; no los quisieron soltar. ^50:34El Redentor de ellos es el Fuerte; Jehová de los ejércitos es su Nombre; de cierto abogará la causa de ellos, para hacer reposar la tierra, y turbar a los moradores de Babilonia.

^50:35“‘Espada sobre los caldeos,’ dice Jehová, ‘y sobre los moradores de Babilonia, y sobre sus príncipes, y sobre sus sabios. ^50:36Espada sobre los engañadores, y se atontarán; espada sobre sus valientes, y serán quebrantados. ^50:37Espada sobre sus caballos, y sobre sus carros, y sobre todo el vulgo que está en medio de ella, y serán como mujeres; espada sobre sus tesoros, y serán saqueados. ^50:38Sequedad sobre sus aguas, y se secarán: porque es tierra de imágenes, y con sus ídolos se enloquecen. ^50:39Por tanto, allí morarán las fieras del desierto junto con las hienas, y los búhos también morarán en ella; y nunca más será poblada ni será habitada, por generación y generación. ^50:40Como Dios destruyó a Sodoma y a Gomorra y a las ciudades vecinas,’ dice Jehová, ‘así no morará allí hombre, ni hijo de hombre la habitará’”.

§El complemento   Cuerpo: Jehová hará que Babilonia esté desolada para siempre, y juzgará sus imágenes talladas (50:41 - 51:64)

¶Lo opuesto   Jehová levantará una coalición de ejércitos contra Babilonia (50:41 - 51:10)

^50:41“‘He aquí viene un pueblo del norte; y una nación grande, y muchos reyes se levantarán de los extremos de la tierra. ^50:42Arco y lanza manejarán; serán crueles, y no tendrán misericordia; su voz sonará como el mar, y montarán sobre caballos; se apercibirán como hombre para la batalla, contra ti, oh hija de Babilonia. ^50:43Oyó la noticia el rey de Babilonia, y sus manos se debilitaron; angustia le tomó, dolor como de mujer de parto. ^50:44He aquí que como león subirá de la espesura del Jordán a la morada fuerte: porque muy pronto le haré huir de ella, y al que fuere escogido la encargaré: porque ¿quién es semejante a mí? ¿y quién me emplazará? ¿o quién será aquel pastor que me podrá resistir?’

^50:45“Por tanto, oíd el consejo de Jehová, que ha acordado sobre Babilonia, y sus pensamientos que ha formado sobre la tierra de los caldeos, ‘Ciertamente los más pequeños del rebaño los arrastrarán, y destruirán sus moradas con ellos. ^50:46Al grito de la toma de Babilonia la tierra tembló, y el clamor se oyó entre las naciones’.

^51:1“Así dice Jehová, ‘He aquí que yo levanto un viento destruidor contra Babilonia, y contra sus moradores que se levantan contra mí. ^51:2Y enviaré a Babilonia aventadores que la avienten, y vaciarán su tierra: porque serán contra ella de todas partes en el día del mal. ^51:3Diré al arquero que entesa su arco, y al que se enorgullece en su coraza; no perdonéis a sus jóvenes, destruid todo su ejército. ^51:4Y caerán muertos en la tierra de los caldeos, y alanceados en sus calles: ^51:5porque Israel y Judá no han enviudado de su Dios, Jehová de los ejércitos, aunque su tierra fue llena de pecado contra el Santo de Israel’”.

^51:6“‘Huid de en medio de Babilonia, y librad cada uno su alma, para que no perezcáis a causa de su maldad: porque éste es el tiempo de la venganza de Jehová; él le dará su pago. ^51:7Copa de oro fue Babilonia en la mano de Jehová, que embriagó a toda la tierra. Las naciones bebieron de su vino; se enloquecieron, por tanto, las naciones. ^51:8En un momento cayó Babilonia, y se despedazó; gemid sobre ella; tomad bálsamo para su dolor, quizá sanará. ^51:9Curamos a Babilonia, y no ha sanado; dejadla, y vayamos cada uno a su tierra: porque su juicio ha llegado hasta el Cielo, y se ha levantado hasta las nubes.

^51:10“‘Jehová sacó a luz nuestras justicias; venid, y contemos en Sión la obra de Jehová nuestro Dios’”.

¶Lo opuesto   Israel es el hacha de batalla y las armas de guerra de Jehová contra las naciones (51:11 - 24)

^51:11“‘Limpiad las saetas, tomad los escudos; Jehová ha despertado el espíritu de los reyes de Media: porque contra Babilonia es su pensamiento para destruirla: porque venganza es de Jehová, venganza de su templo. ^51:12Levantad bandera sobre los muros de Babilonia, reforzad la guardia, colocad centinelas, tended emboscadas: porque deliberó Jehová, y aun pondrá en efecto lo que ha dicho contra los moradores de Babilonia. ^51:13Oh tú que habitas entre muchas aguas, rica en tesoros, ha venido tu fin, la medida de tu codicia. ^51:14Jehová de los ejércitos juró por sí mismo, diciendo, ‘Yo te llenaré de hombres como de langostas, y levantarán contra ti gritería’.

^51:15“‘Él es el que hizo la tierra con su poder, el que afirmó el mundo con su sabiduría, y extendió los cielos con su inteligencia. ^51:16Cuando emite su voz, tumulto de aguas se producen en los cielos, y hace subir las nubes de lo último de la tierra; él hace relámpagos con la lluvia, y saca el viento de sus tesoros’”.

^51:17“‘Todo hombre se ha infatuado por su conocimiento; se avergüenza todo artífice de la escultura: porque mentira es su imagen de fundición, y no tienen espíritu en ellos. ^51:18Vanidad son, obra irrisoria; en el tiempo de su visitación perecerán.

^51:19No es como ellos la porción de Jacob: porque él es el Formador de todo; e Israel es la vara de su heredad: Jehová de los ejércitos es su Nombre.

^51:20“‘Maza me sois, y armas de guerra; contigo quebrantaré naciones, y contigo destruiré reinos. ^51:21Contigo destruiré caballo y jinete, y contigo destruiré carros y a los que en ellos suben; ^51:22contigo destruiré hombres y mujeres, contigo destruiré viejos y niños, y contigo destruiré jóvenes y doncellas. ^51:23También destruiré contigo al pastor y a su rebaño; destruiré contigo a labradores y sus yuntas; a príncipes y gobernadores destruiré contigo. ^51:24Y pagaré a Babilonia y a todos los moradores de Caldea, todo el mal que hicieron en Sión delante de vuestros ojos,’ dice Jehová”.

¶El complemento   Jehová hará a Babilonia desolada para siempre (51:25 - 40

^51:25“‘He aquí yo contra ti, oh monte destruidor,’ dice Jehová, que destruiste toda la tierra; y extenderé mi mano sobre ti, y te haré rodar de las peñas, y te tornaré en monte quemado. ^51:26Y no tomarán de ti piedra para esquina, ni piedra para cimiento: porque para siempre serás desolada,’ dice Jehová.

^51:27“‘Alzad bandera en la tierra, tocad trompeta en las naciones, preparaos naciones contra ella; convocad contra ella a los reinos de Ararat, de Mini, y de Askenaz; señalad contra ella capitán, haced subir caballos como langostas erizadas. ^51:28Apercibid contra ella a las naciones; a los reyes de Media, sus capitanes y todos sus príncipes, y a toda la tierra de su señorío. ^51:29Y temblará la tierra, y se afligirá: porque confirmado es contra Babilonia todo el pensamiento de Jehová, para poner la tierra de Babilonia en soledad, y que no haya morador.

^51:30“‘Los valientes de Babilonia dejaron de pelear, se han quedado en sus fortalezas; les faltaron las fuerzas, se han vuelto como mujeres; encendieron sus casas, quebrados están sus cerrojos. ^51:31Un correo se encontrará con otro correo, un mensajero se encontrará con otro mensajero, para notificar al rey de Babilonia que su ciudad es tomada por todas partes. ^51:32Y los vados fueron tomados, y los juncos fueron quemados a fuego, y los hombres de guerra están aterrados’. ^51:33Porque así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel, ‘La hija de Babilonia es como una era; tiempo es ya de trillarla; de aquí a poco le vendrá el tiempo de la siega’”.

^51:34“‘Me comió, me desmenuzó Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia; me dejó como un vaso vacío, me tragó como dragón, llenó su vientre de mis delicadezas, y me echó fuera. ^51:35Sobre Babilonia caiga la violencia hecha a mí y a mi carne,’ dirá la moradora de Sión; ‘y mi sangre sobre los moradores de Caldea,’ dirá Jerusalén’.

^51:36“Por tanto, así dice Jehová, ‘He aquí que yo juzgo tu causa y haré tu venganza; y secaré su mar, y haré que se seque su manantial. ^51:37Y Babilonia se convertirá en escombros, en morada de dragones, en espanto y escarnio, sin morador. ^51:38A una rugirán como leones; como cachorros de leones gruñirán. ^51:39En su calor les pondré sus banquetes; y les haré que se embriaguen, para que se alegren, y duerman eterno sueño y no despierten,’ dice Jehová. ^51:40‘Los haré traer como corderos al matadero, como carneros y machos cabríos’”.

¶El complemento   Jehová ejecutará juicio sobre las imágenes talladas de Babilonia (51:41 - 58)

^51:41“‘¡Cómo fue apresada Sesac, y fue tomada la que era alabada por toda la tierra! ¡Cómo vino a ser Babilonia objeto de horror entre las naciones! ^51:42Subió el mar sobre Babilonia; de la multitud de sus ondas fue cubierta. ^51:43Sus ciudades fueron asoladas, la tierra seca y desierta, tierra que no morará en ella nadie, ni pasará por ella hijo de hombre. ^51:44Y juzgaré a Bel en Babilonia, y sacaré de su boca lo que ha tragado; y no vendrán más naciones a él; y el muro de Babilonia caerá.

^51:45“‘Salid de en medio de ella, pueblo mío, y salvad cada uno su vida de la ira del furor de Jehová. ^51:46No sea que desmaye vuestro corazón, y temáis a causa del rumor que se oirá por la tierra, en un año vendrá el rumor, y después en otro año un rumor, y violencia en la tierra, gobernante contra gobernante.

^51:47“‘Por tanto, he aquí vienen días que yo destruiré los ídolos de Babilonia, y toda su tierra será avergonzada, y todos sus muertos caerán en medio de ella. ^51:48Y los cielos y la tierra, y todo lo que está en ellos, cantarán de gozo sobre Babilonia: porque del norte vendrán sobre ella destructores,’ dice Jehová. ^51:49‘Como Babilonia causó que los muertos de Israel cayesen, así en Babilonia caerán los muertos de toda la tierra’”.

^51:50“‘Los que escapasteis de la espada, andad, no os detengáis; acordaos por muchos días de Jehová, y acordaos de Jerusalén’”. ^51:51“Estamos avergonzados: porque hemos escuchado reproche; confusión cubrió nuestros rostros: porque extraños han venido dentro de los santuarios de la Casa de Jehová”.

^51:52“‘Por tanto, he aquí vienen días,’ dice Jehová, ‘que yo visitaré sus esculturas, y en toda su tierra gemirán los heridos. ^51:53Aunque suba Babilonia al Cielo, aunque se fortifique hasta lo alto de su fuerza, de mi parte vendrán a ella destructores,’ dice Jehová. ^51:54‘¡Se oye el clamor de Babilonia, y destrucción grande de la tierra de los caldeos! ^51:55Porque Jehová destruye a Babilonia, y quitará de ella el mucho estruendo; y bramarán sus olas, como muchas aguas será el sonido de la voz de ellos, ^51:56porque vino destruidor contra ella, contra Babilonia, y sus valientes fueron apresados, el arco de ellos fue quebrado: porque Jehová, Dios de retribuciones, dará la paga. ^51:57Y embriagaré a sus príncipes y a sus sabios, a sus capitanes y a sus nobles y a sus fuertes; y dormirán sueño eterno y no despertarán,’ dice el Rey, cuyo Nombre es Jehová de los ejércitos. ^51:58Así dice Jehová de los ejércitos, ‘El muro ancho de Babilonia será derribado enteramente, y sus altas puertas serán quemadas a fuego; y en vano trabajarán pueblos y gentes en el fuego, y se cansarán’”.

¶Único   Jeremías le mandó a Seraías que leyera sus profecías contra Babilonia y lo arrojara al río Eufrates (51:59 - 64)

^51:59Palabra que envió el Profeta Jeremías a Seraías hijo de Nerías, hijo de Maasías, cuando iba con Sedequías rey de Judá a Babilonia, en el cuarto año de su reinado.

Y era Seraías el principal camarero.

^51:60Escribió, pues, Jeremías en un libro todo el mal que había de venir sobre Babilonia, todas las palabras que están escritas contra Babilonia. ^51:61Y dijo Jeremías a Seraías, “Cuando llegares a Babilonia, y vieres y leyeres todas estas cosas, ^51:62dirás, ‘Oh Jehová, tú has dicho contra este lugar que lo habías de talar, hasta no quedar en él morador, ni hombre ni animal, sino que para siempre ha de ser asolado’.

^51:63Y será que cuando acabares de leer este libro, le atarás una piedra, y lo echarás en medio del Éufrates; y dirás, ‘¡Así se hundirá Babilonia, y no se levantará del mal que yo traigo sobre ella; y serán rendidos!’”

Hasta aquí son las palabras de Jeremías.

§Único   Conclusión: Nabucodonosor conquistó Jerusalén y llevó al pueblo cautivo a Babilonia (52:1 - 34)

¶El complemento   El ejército de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, conquistó Jerusalén y ejecutó el juicio sobre el rey y los príncipes (52:1 - 11)

^52:1Era Sedequías de edad de veintiún años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó once años en Jerusalén. Su madre se llamaba Amutal, hija de Jeremías, de Libna. ^52:2E hizo lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, conforme a todo lo que hizo Joacim. ^52:3Y a causa de la ira de Jehová sucedió esto contra Jerusalén y Judá, hasta que los echó de su presencia; y se rebeló Sedequías contra el rey de Babilonia.

^52:4Aconteció por tanto a los nueve años de su reinado, en el mes décimo, a los diez días del mes, que vino Nabucodonosor rey de Babilonia, él y todo su ejército, contra Jerusalén, y contra ella acamparon, y de todas partes edificaron baluartes contra ella. ^52:5Y estuvo sitiada la ciudad hasta el undécimo año del rey Sedequías.

^52:6En el mes cuarto, a los nueve del mes, prevaleció el hambre en la ciudad, hasta no haber pan para el pueblo de la tierra. ^52:7Entonces fue abierta una brecha en la ciudad, y todos los hombres de guerra huyeron, y salieron de la ciudad de noche por el camino de la puerta de entre los dos muros, que había cerca del jardín del rey, y se fueron por el camino del desierto, estando aún los caldeos junto a la ciudad alrededor.

^52:8Pero el ejército de los caldeos siguió al rey, y alcanzaron a Sedequías en los llanos de Jericó; y se dispersó de él todo su ejército.

^52:9Entonces prendieron al rey, y le hicieron venir al rey de Babilonia, a Ribla en tierra de Hamat, donde pronunció sentencia contra él. ^52:10Y degolló el rey de Babilonia a los hijos de Sedequías delante de sus ojos, y también degolló a todos los príncipes de Judá en Ribla. ^52:11Después el rey de Babilonia le sacó los ojos a Sedequías, y le aprisionó con grillos y lo hizo llevar a Babilonia; y lo puso en la cárcel hasta el día en que murió.

¶El complemento   Nabucodonosor llevó cautivo a algunos de los habitantes de Judá a Babilonia, en tres grupos separados (52:12 - 34)

^52:12Y en el mes quinto, a los diez del mes, que era el año diecinueve del reinado de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, entró a Jerusalén Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, que solía estar delante del rey de Babilonia. ^52:13Y quemó la Casa de Jehová, y la casa del rey, y todas las casas de Jerusalén; y le prendió fuego a todo grande edificio. ^52:14Y todo el ejército de los caldeos, que venía con el capitán de la guardia, destruyó todos los muros de Jerusalén en derredor.

^52:15E hizo trasportar Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, a algunos de los pobres del pueblo, y al remanente del pueblo que había quedado en la ciudad, y a los desertores que se habían pasado al rey de Babilonia, y a todo el resto de la multitud. ^52:16Pero de los pobres del país dejó Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, para viñadores y labradores. ^52:17Y los caldeos quebraron las columnas de bronce que estaban en la Casa de Jehová, y las bases, y el mar de bronce que estaba en la Casa de Jehová, y llevaron todo el bronce a Babilonia. ^52:18Se llevaron también los calderos, las palas, las despabiladeras, los tazones, las cucharas, y todos los vasos de bronce con que se ministraba, ^52:19y las copas, incensarios, tazones, ollas, candeleros, escudillas y tazas: lo que de oro de oro, y lo que de plata de plata, se llevó el capitán de la guardia. ^52:20Las dos columnas, un mar, y doce bueyes de bronce que estaban debajo de las bases, que había hecho el rey Salomón en la Casa de Jehová: no se podía pesar el bronce de todos estos vasos. ^52:21En cuanto a las columnas, la altura de la columna era de dieciocho codos, y un hilo de doce codos la rodeaba; y su grueso era de cuatro dedos, y hueca. ^52:22Y el capitel de bronce que había sobre ella, era de altura de cinco codos, con una red y granadas en el capitel alrededor, todo de bronce; y lo mismo era lo de la segunda columna con sus granadas. ^52:23Había noventa y seis granadas en cada hilera; todas ellas eran ciento sobre la red alrededor.

^52:24Tomó también el capitán de la guardia a Seraías, el principal sacerdote, y a Sofonías, el segundo sacerdote, y a los tres guardas de la puerta. ^52:25Y de la ciudad tomó a un oficial que era capitán sobre los hombres de guerra, y siete hombres de los consejeros del rey, que se hallaron en la ciudad; y al principal secretario de la milicia, que pasaba revista al pueblo de la tierra para la guerra; y sesenta hombres del vulgo del país, que se hallaron dentro de la ciudad. ^52:26Los tomó, pues, Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, y los llevó al rey de Babilonia a Ribla. ^52:27Y el rey de Babilonia los hirió, y los mató en Ribla en tierra de Hamat. Así fue Judá trasportado de su tierra.

^52:28Éste es el pueblo que Nabucodonosor hizo trasportar: en el año séptimo, tres mil veintitrés Judíos. ^52:29En el año dieciocho de Nabucodonosor él llevó cautivas de Jerusalén a ochocientas treinta y dos personas. ^52:30En el año veintitrés de Nabucodonosor, Nabuzaradán capitán de la guardia, llevó cautivas a setecientas cuarenta y cinco personas de los Judíos: todas las personas fueron cuatro mil seiscientas.

^52:31Y aconteció que en el año treinta y siete de la cautividad de Joaquín rey de Judá, en el mes duodécimo, a los veinticinco del mes, Evil-merodac, rey de Babilonia, en el año primero de su reinado, alzó la cabeza de Joaquín rey de Judá y lo sacó de la cárcel; ^52:32y habló con él amigablemente, e hizo poner su trono sobre los tronos de los reyes que estaban con él en Babilonia. ^52:33Le hizo mudar también su ropa de prisionero, y comía pan delante del rey siempre todos los días de su vida. ^52:34Y continuamente se le daba una ración de parte del rey de Babilonia, cada cosa en su día, todos los días de su vida, hasta el día de su muerte.
