Daniel & Zechariah, Chapter 2.4 (Zechariah): Jehovah will deliver his people from the Greeks, but not the Romans before the first Coming of Christ (9:1 - 11:17)

Introduction: Alexander the Great will conquer Tyrus, but Jehovah will defend his people from a different invading army of Greeks (9:1 - 17)

Body: Jehovah will strengthen the house of Judah and return the people to the land of Israel (the Hasmonian Dynasty 110 - 63 B.C.) (10:1 - 12)

¶Complement   Jehovah has made the house of Judah as his excellent horse in the battle (10:3 - 4)

“And Damascus shall be its rest, when the eyes of man, as of all the tribes of Israel, shall be toward Jehovah. ^9:2And Hamath also shall border thereby; also Tyrus and Zidon, though it is very wise. ^9:3And Tyrus built herself a stronghold, and heaped up silver as the dust, and fine gold as the mud of the streets.

^9:4Behold, the Lord will cast her out, and he will smite her power in the sea; and she shall be devoured with fire.

^9:5Askelon shall see it, and fear; Gaza shall also see it, and be very sorrowful; and Ekron: for her expectation shall be ashamed; and the king shall perish from Gaza, and Askelon shall not be inhabited. ^9:6And a bastard shall dwell in Ashdod, and I will cut off the pride of the Philistines. ^9:7And I will take away his blood out of his mouth, and his abominations from between his teeth; but he that remains, even he, shall be for our God, and he shall be as a governor in Judah, and Ekron as a Jebusite.

^9:8And I will camp around my House because of the army, because of him that passes by, and because of him that returns. And no oppressor shall pass through them anymore: for now have I seen with my eyes.

^9:9Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem; behold, your King is coming to you. He is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon a donkey; and upon a colt, the foal of a donkey.

^9:10And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off. And he shall speak peace to the heathen; and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth. ^9:11As for you also, by the blood of your Covenant have I sent forth your prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water.

^9:12Turn to the stronghold, you prisoners of hope; even today do I declare that I will render double to you, ^9:13when I have bent Judah for me, filled the bow with Ephraim, and raised up your sons, O Zion, against your sons, O Greece, and made you as the sword of a mighty man. ^9:14And Jehovah shall be seen over them, and his arrow shall go forth as the lightning; and the Lord Jehovah shall blow the trumpet, and shall go with whirlwinds of the south.

^9:15Jehovah of hosts shall defend them; and they shall devour, and subdue with sling stones; and they shall drink, and make a noise as through wine; and they shall be filled like bowls, and as the corners of the altar.

^9:16And Jehovah their God shall save them in that day as the flock of his people: for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon his land: ^9:17for how great is his goodness, and how great is his beauty! Grain shall make the young men cheerful, and new wine the maids.

^10:1Ask of Jehovah rain in the time of the latter rain; so shall Jehovah make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to everyone grass in the field: ^10:2for the idols have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams. They comfort in vain; therefore they went their way as a flock. They were troubled, because there was no shepherd.

^10:3My anger was kindled against the shepherds; and I punished the goats: for Jehovah of hosts, has visited his flock the house of Judah, and has made them as his excellent horse in the battle. ^10:4Out of him came forth the Corner Stone; out of him came forth the Nail; out of him came forth the Battle Bow; out of him came forth every exactor together.

^10:5And they shall be like mighty men, which tread down their enemies in the mire of the streets in the battle; and they shall fight, because Jehovah is with them, and the riders on horses shall be ashamed. ^10:6And I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph, and I will bring them again to place them: for I will have mercy upon them. And they shall be as though I had not cast them off: for I am Jehovah their God, and will hear them. ^10:7And they of Ephraim shall be like a mighty man, and their heart shall rejoice as through wine; moreover, their children shall see it, and be glad; their heart shall rejoice in Jehovah.

^10:8I will whistle for them, and gather them: for I have redeemed them; and they shall increase as they have increased. ^10:9And I will sow them among the people; and they shall remember me in far countries; and they shall live with their children, and return. ^10:10I will also bring them again out of the land of Egypt, and gather them out of Assyria; and I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon; and room shall not be found for them.

^10:11And he shall pass through the sea with affliction, and shall smite the waves in the sea, and all the deeps of the river shall dry up; and the pride of Assyria shall be brought down, and the scepter of Egypt shall depart away. ^10:12And I will strengthen them in Jehovah; and they shall walk up and down in his Name, says Jehovah.

^11:4Thus says Jehovah my God: ‘Feed the flock of the slaughter, ^11:5whose possessors slay them, and hold themselves not guilty; and they that sell them say, ‘Blessed is Jehovah: for I am rich’; and their own shepherds do not pity them.

^11:6For I will no longer pity the inhabitants of the land,’ says Jehovah; ‘but, lo, I will deliver every one of the men into his neighbor's hand, and into the hand of his king. And they shall smite the land, and I will not deliver them out of their hand.

^11:7And I will feed the flock of slaughter, even you, O poor of the flock.

And I took to me two staffs: the one I called Beauty, and the other I called Bands; and I fed the flock. ^11:8Three shepherds also I cut off in one month; and my soul loathed them, and their soul also abhorred me. ^11:9Then I said, ‘I will not feed you. That which is dying, let it die; and that which is to be cut off, let it be cut off; and let the rest eat every one the flesh of another.’

^11:10And I took my staff, even Beauty, and cut it in two, that I might break my Covenant which I had made with all the people. ^11:11And it was broken in that day; and so the poor of the flock that waited upon me knew that it was the Word of Jehovah. ^11:12And I said to them, ‘If you think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear.’ So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver. ^11:13And Jehovah said to me, ‘Cast it to the potter; a good price that I was valued of them.’ And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the House of Jehovah.

^11:14Then I cut in pieces my other staff, even Bands, that I might break the brotherhood between Judah and Israel.

^11:15And Jehovah said to me, ‘Take to you yet the instruments of a foolish shepherd. ^11:16For, lo, I will raise up a shepherd in the land, which shall not visit those that are cut off; neither shall he seek the young one, nor heal that which is broken, nor feed that which stands still; but he shall eat the flesh of the fat, and tear their claws in pieces.

^11:17Woe to the idol shepherd that leaves the flock! The sword shall be upon his arm, and upon his right eye; his arm shall be completely dried up, and his right eye shall be utterly darkened.’’”

^9:15Jehová de los ejércitos los defenderá, y ellos devorarán y subyugarán con piedras de la honda, y beberán y harán estrépito como embriagados de vino; y se llenarán como tazones y como las esquinas del altar.

^10:5Y serán como valientes, que en la batalla pisotean al enemigo en el lodo de las calles; y pelearán: porque Jehová será con ellos; y los que cabalgan en caballos serán avergonzados. ^10:6Porque yo fortaleceré la casa de Judá, y guardaré la casa de José; y los volveré a traer porque tendré misericordia de ellos; y serán como si no los hubiera desechado: porque soy Jehová su Dios, y los oiré. ^10:7Y será Efraín como valiente, y se alegrará su corazón como por el vino; sus hijos también verán y se alegrarán; su corazón se gozará en Jehová.

^10:8Yo les silbaré y los reuniré: porque los he redimido; y se multiplicarán como antes fueron multiplicados. ^10:9Y los sembraré entre los pueblos, aun en lejanos países se acordarán de mí; y vivirán con sus hijos, y volverán. ^10:10Yo los traeré de la tierra de Egipto, y los recogeré de Asiria; y los traeré a la tierra de Galaad y del Líbano, y no les bastará.

^11:6Por tanto, no tendré ya más piedad de los moradores de la tierra,’ dice Jehová; ‘porque he aquí, yo entregaré los hombres, cada cual en mano de su compañero, y en mano de su rey; y herirán la tierra, y yo no los libraré de sus manos.

^11:7Apacentaré, pues, las ovejas de la matanza, esto es, a ustedes, los pobres del rebaño.

Y tomé para mí dos cayados; al uno puse por nombre Hermosura, y al otro Lazos; y apacenté las ovejas. ^11:8Y destruí a tres pastores en un mes, y mi alma los detestó, y también el alma de ellos me aborreció a mí. ^11:9Y dije, ‘No os apacentaré; la que ha de morir, que muera; y la que se ha de perder, que se pierda; y las que quedaren, que cada una coma la carne de su compañera’.

^11:10Tomé luego mi cayado Hermosura, y lo quebré, para deshacer mi pacto que concerté con todos los pueblos. ^11:11Y fue deshecho en ese día, y así conocieron los pobres del rebaño que miraban a mí, que era la Palabra de Jehová. ^11:12Y les dije, ‘Si os parece bien, dadme mi salario; y si no, dejadlo’. Y pesaron por mi salario treinta piezas de plata. ^11:13Y me dijo Jehová, ‘Échalo al tesoro, ¡hermoso precio con que me han apreciado!’ Y tomé las treinta piezas de plata, y las eché en la Casa de Jehová al tesoro.

^11:14Quebré luego mi segundo cayado, Lazos, para romper la hermandad entre Judá e Israel.

^11:15Y me dijo Jehová, ‘Toma aún los aperos de un pastor insensato: ^11:16porque he aquí, yo levanto pastor en la tierra, que no visitará las perdidas, no buscará la pequeña, no curará la perniquebrada, ni llevará la cansada a cuestas; sino que comerá la carne de la engordada, y romperá sus pezuñas.

^11:17¡Ay del pastor inútil que abandona el rebaño! Espada caiga sobre su brazo, y sobre su ojo derecho; del todo se secará su brazo, y su ojo derecho será totalmente oscurecido’’”.
