Daniel & Zechariah, Chapter 1.2 (Daniel): The coming of the Kingdom was confirmed by Jehovah’s authority over rulers (4:1 - 5:31)

Introduction: Through the fulfillment of a dream, Jehovah taught Nebuchadnezzar that He was the only true God (4:1 - 37)

And how mighty are his wonders! His Kingdom is an everlasting Kingdom; and his dominion is from generation to generation.

^4:4I Nebuchadnezzar was at rest in my house, and flourishing in my palace. ^4:5But I saw a dream which made me afraid; and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me.

^4:6Therefore I made a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream. ^4:7Then the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers came in; and I told the dream before them, but they did not make known to me its interpretation.

^4:8But at last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the Spirit of the Holy God. And before him I told the dream, saying, ^4:9“O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the Spirit of the Holy God is in you, and no secret troubles you, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and its interpretation. ^4:10These were the visions of my head in my bed: I saw, and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and its height was great. ^4:11The tree grew, and was strong; and its height reached to heaven, and the sight of it to the end of all the earth; ^4:12its leaves were lovely, and its fruit abundant, and in it was food for all; the beasts of the field had shade under it, and the birds of the heaven dwelt in its branches, and all flesh was fed by it. ^4:13I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed; and, behold, a watcher and a holy one came down from Heaven; ^4:14he cried aloud, and said this: ‘Cut down the tree, and cut off his branches; shake off his leaves, and scatter his fruit; let the beasts get away from under it, and the birds from his branches! ^4:15Nevertheless leave the stump of his roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and bronze, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth; ^4:16let his heart be changed from man's, and let a beast's heart be given him; and let seven times pass over him. ^4:17This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones, to the intent that the living may know that the most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomsoever he will, and sets up over it the basest of men.’

^4:18This dream I king Nebuchadnezzar have seen. Now you, O Belteshazzar, declare its interpretation, forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation; but you are able: for the Spirit of the Holy God is in you.”

^4:19Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonished for one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. The king spoke, and said, “Belteshazzar, do not let the dream, nor its interpretation, trouble you.” Belteshazzar answered and said, “My lord, the dream is to them that hate you, and its interpretation to your enemies. ^4:20The tree that you saw, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached to the heaven, and the sight of it to all the earth, ^4:21whose leaves were lovely, and its fruit abundant, and in it was food for all; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the birds of the heaven had their habitation: ^4:22it is you, O king, that have grown and become strong: for your greatness has grown, and reaches to heaven, and your dominion to the end of the earth. ^4:23And whereas the king saw a watcher and a holy one coming down from Heaven, and saying, ‘Cut down the tree, and destroy it; yet leave the stump of its roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and bronze, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, until seven times pass over him’: ^4:24this is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the most High, which has come upon my lord the king, ^4:25that they shall drive you from men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make you to eat grass as oxen, and they shall wet you with the dew of heaven; and seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomsoever he will. ^4:26And whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the tree roots: your kingdom shall be sure to you, after that you shall know that the Heavens rule. ^4:27Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you; and break off your sins by righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of your tranquility.”

^4:28All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar. ^4:29At the end of twelve months he walked in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon. ^4:30The king spoke, and said, “Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honor of my majesty?” ^4:31While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from Heaven, saying, “O king Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: the kingdom has departed from you. ^4:32And they shall drive you from men. And your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field; they shall make you to eat grass like oxen. And seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomsoever he will.” ^4:33The same hour the thing was fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar; and he was driven from men; and he ate grass like oxen; and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, until his hairs were grown like eagle's feathers, and his nails like bird's claws.

^4:34And at the end of the days, I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up my eyes to Heaven; and my understanding returned to me, and I blessed the most High; and I praised and honored him that lives forever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his Kingdom from generation to generation. ^4:35And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; and he does according to his will in the army of Heaven, and the inhabitants of the earth. And no one can restrain his hand, or say to him, “What are you doing?”

^4:36At the same time my reason returned to me; and for the glory of my kingdom, my honor and brightness returned to me; and my counselors and my lords sought to me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added to me.

^4:37Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of Heaven: all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment; and those that walk in pride he is able to humble.

^5:2Belshazzar, while he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the Temple which was in Jerusalem, so that the king, his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink in them.

^5:3Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the Temple of the House of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them. ^5:4They drank wine; and praised the gods of gold, of silver, of bronze, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

^5:5In the same hour fingers of a man's hand came forth, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaster of the wall of the king's palace;

and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

¶Opposite   Belshazzar asked the wise men of Babylon to read the message and interpret it, but none could (5:6 - 9)

^5:6Then the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his back were loosed, and his knees knocked one against another.

^5:7The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers.

The king spoke, and said to the wise men of Babylon, “Whosoever shall read this writing, and show me its interpretation, shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom!”

^5:8Then all the king's wise men came in, but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king its interpretation.

^5:9Then king Belshazzar was greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his lords were perplexed.

¶Complement   The queen told Belshazzar about Daniel, who could interpret the message (5:10 - 12)

^5:10The queen, by reason of the words of the king and his lords, came into the banquet house.

The queen spoke and said, “O king, live forever;

let your thoughts not trouble you, nor let your countenance be changed.

^5:11There is a man in your kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of your father, light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar your father, the king, I say, your father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers: ^5:12forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and showing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar.

Now let Daniel be called, and he will show the interpretation.”

^5:13Then Daniel was brought in before the king; the king spoke and said to Daniel, “Are you that Daniel, which are of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Jewry?

^5:14I have even heard of you, that the spirit of the gods is in you, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in you.

^5:15And now the wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known to me its interpretation; but they could not show the interpretation of the thing.

^5:16And I have heard of you, that you can make interpretations, and dissolve doubts.

Now if you can read the writing, and make known to me its interpretation, you shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about your neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.”

^5:17Then Daniel answered and said before the king, “Let your gifts be to yourself, and give your rewards to another;

yet I will read the writing to the king, and make known to him the interpretation.

^5:18O you king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father a kingdom, majesty, glory, and honor;

^5:19and for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him. Whom he would he slew, and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up, and whom he would he put down.

^5:20But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him; ^5:21and he was driven from the sons of men, and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys; they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, until he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appoints over it whomsoever he will.

^5:26This is the interpretation of the thing: ‘MENE’: God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it. ^5:27‘TEKEL’: you have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting. ^5:28‘PERES’: your kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.”

^5:29Then Belshazzar commanded; and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck.

And they made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

^5:30In that night, Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans was slain; ^5:31and Darius the Median took the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old.

Debajo de él se ponían a la sombra las bestias del campo, y en sus ramas hacían morada las aves del cielo, y se mantenía de él toda carne. ^4:13Veía en las visiones de mi cabeza estando en mi cama, y he aquí que un vigilante y santo descendía del Cielo. ^4:14Y clamaba fuertemente y decía así, ‘Derribad el árbol, y cortad sus ramas, quitadle su follaje, y derramad su fruto; váyanse las bestias que están debajo de él, y las aves de sus ramas. ^4:15Pero la cepa de sus raíces dejaréis en la tierra, y con atadura de hierro y de bronce entre la hierba del campo; y sea mojado con el rocío del cielo, y su parte con las bestias en la hierba de la tierra. ^4:16Sea mudado su corazón de hombre, y le sea dado corazón de bestia, y pasen sobre él siete tiempos. ^4:17La sentencia es por decreto de los vigilantes, y por dicho de los santos la demanda: para que conozcan los vivientes que el Altísimo señorea en el reino de los hombres, y que a quien él quiere lo da, y constituye sobre él al más bajo de los hombres’.

^4:18Yo el rey Nabucodonosor he visto este sueño. Tú, pues, Beltsasar, dirás la interpretación de él: porque todos los sabios de mi reino nunca pudieron mostrarme su interpretación; pero tú puedes: porque hay en ti espíritu de los dioses santos”.

Respondió Beltsasar, y dijo, “Señor mío, el sueño sea para los que te aborrecen, y su interpretación para tus enemigos. ^4:20El árbol que viste, que crecía y se hacía fuerte, y que su altura llegaba hasta el cielo, y que era visible a toda la tierra; ^4:21y cuyo follaje era hermoso, y su fruto en abundancia, y que para todos había mantenimiento en él; debajo del cual moraban las bestias del campo, y en sus ramas habitaban las aves del cielo, ^4:22eres tú mismo, oh rey, que creciste, y te hiciste fuerte, pues creció tu grandeza, y ha llegado hasta el cielo, y tu señorío hasta el cabo de la tierra. ^4:23Y en cuanto a lo que vio el rey, un vigilante y santo que descendía del Cielo, y decía, ‘Cortad el árbol y destruidlo; pero la cepa de sus raíces dejaréis en la tierra, y con atadura de hierro y de bronce en la hierba del campo; y sea mojado con el rocío del cielo, y su parte sea con las bestias del campo, hasta que pasen sobre él siete tiempos’: ^4:24ésta es la interpretación, oh rey, y la sentencia del Altísimo, que ha venido sobre el rey mi señor: ^4:25que te echarán de entre los hombres, y con las bestias del campo será tu morada, y te harán comer hierba del campo, como los bueyes, y con rocío del cielo serás bañado; y siete tiempos pasarán sobre ti, hasta que entiendas que el Altísimo señorea en el reino de los hombres, y que a quien él quiere lo da. ^4:26Y lo que dijeron, que dejasen en la tierra la cepa de las raíces del mismo árbol, significa que tu reino te quedará firme, luego que reconozcas que el señorío es de los Cielos. ^4:27Por tanto, oh rey, acepta mi consejo, y rompe con tus pecados mediante justicia, y con tus iniquidades mediante misericordias para con los pobres; que tal vez será eso una prolongación de tu tranquilidad”.

^4:28Todo esto vino sobre el rey Nabucodonosor. ^4:29Al cabo de doce meses, paseando en el palacio del reino de Babilonia, ^4:30habló el rey, y dijo, “¿No es ésta la gran Babilonia, que yo edifiqué para casa del reino, con la fuerza de mi poder, y para gloria de mi grandeza?”. ^4:31Aún estaba la palabra en la boca del rey, cuando descendió una voz del Cielo, diciendo, “A ti se te dice, rey Nabucodonosor; el reino es traspasado de ti. ^4:32Y de entre los hombres te echan, y con las bestias del campo será tu morada, y como a los bueyes te apacentarán; y siete tiempos pasarán sobre ti, hasta que reconozcas que el Altísimo señorea en el reino de los hombres, y que a quien él quiere lo da”. ^4:33En la misma hora se cumplió la palabra sobre Nabucodonosor, y fue echado de entre los hombres; y comía hierba como los bueyes, y su cuerpo se bañaba con el rocío del cielo, hasta que su pelo creció como las plumas de águila, y sus uñas como de aves.

^4:34Pero al fin del tiempo yo Nabucodonosor alcé mis ojos al Cielo, y mi sentido me fue vuelto; y bendije al Altísimo, y alabé y glorifiqué al que vive para siempre: porque su señorío es eterno, y su reino por todas las edades. ^4:35Y todos los moradores de la tierra son estimados como nada, y él hace según su voluntad en el ejército del Cielo, y en los habitantes de la tierra; nadie puede detener su mano, y le diga, “¿Qué estás haciendo?”.

^4:36En el mismo tiempo mi sentido me fue vuelto, y la majestad de mi reino, mi dignidad y mi grandeza volvieron a mí, y mis gobernadores y mis grandes me buscaron; y fui restituido a mi reino, y mayor grandeza me fue añadida.

^4:37Ahora yo Nabucodonosor alabo, engrandezco y glorifico al Rey del Cielo: porque todas sus obras son verdad, y sus caminos juicio; y humillar puede a los que andan con soberbia.

^5:3Entonces fueron traídos los vasos de oro que habían traído del Templo de la casa de Dios que estaba en Jerusalén, y bebieron con ellos el rey y sus príncipes, sus esposas y sus concubinas. ^5:4Bebieron vino, y alabaron a los dioses de oro y de plata, de bronce, de hierro, de madera y de piedra.

^5:5En aquella misma hora salieron unos dedos de mano de hombre, y escribían delante del candelero sobre lo encalado de la pared del palacio real;

y el rey veía la palma de la mano que escribía.

^5:6Entonces demudó el semblante del rey, y sus pensamientos lo turbaron, y se desataron las ceñiduras de sus lomos, y sus rodillas se batían la una con la otra.

^5:7El rey gritó en alta voz que hiciesen venir magos, caldeos, y adivinos.

Habló el rey, y dijo a los sabios de Babilonia, “¡Cualquiera que leyere esta escritura, y me mostrare su interpretación, será vestido de púrpura, y tendrá collar de oro a su cuello; y gobernará como el tercero en el reino!”.

^5:8Entonces fueron introducidos todos los sabios del rey, y no pudieron leer la escritura, ni mostrar al rey su interpretación.

^5:9Entonces el rey Belsasar se turbó en gran manera, y se le demudó su semblante y sus príncipes quedaron atónitos.

¶El complemento   La reina le dijo a Belsasar sobre Daniel, quien podría interpretar el mensaje (5:10 - 12)

^5:10La reina, por las palabras del rey y de sus príncipes, entró a la sala del banquete.

Habló la reina, y dijo, “Rey, para siempre vive;

no te asombren tus pensamientos, ni se demude tu semblante.

^5:11En tu reino hay un varón, en el cual mora el espíritu de los dioses santos; y en los días de tu padre se halló en él luz e inteligencia y sabiduría, como la sabiduría de los dioses; al cual tu padre, el rey Nabucodonosor, digo, tu padre el rey, constituyó príncipe sobre todos los magos, astrólogos, caldeos, y adivinos; ^5:12por cuanto fue hallado en él un mayor espíritu, y conocimiento e inteligencia, para interpretar sueños, declarar enigmas, y deshacer dudas, es decir, en Daniel; al cual el rey puso por nombre Beltsasar.

Llámese, pues, ahora a Daniel, y él mostrará la interpretación”.

¶El complemento   El rey Belsasar le pidió a Daniel que interpretara el mensaje (5:13 - 16)

^5:13Entonces Daniel fue traído delante del rey; habló el rey, y dijo a Daniel, “¿Eres tú aquel Daniel de los hijos de la cautividad de Judá, que mi padre trajo de Judea?

^5:14Yo he oído de ti que el espíritu de los dioses santos está en ti, y que en ti se halló luz, y entendimiento y mayor sabiduría.

^5:15Y ahora fueron traídos delante de mí, sabios, astrólogos, que leyesen esta escritura, y me mostrasen su interpretación; pero no han podido mostrar la declaración del asunto.

^5:16Yo pues he oído de ti que puedes interpretar sueños y disolver las dudas.

Si ahora pudieres leer esta escritura, y mostrarme su interpretación, serás vestido de púrpura, y collar de oro tendrás en tu cuello, y en el reino serás el tercer señor”.

¶Único   Daniel le recordó a Belsasar la experiencia de su abuelo Nabucodonosor con Jehová Dios (5:17 - 21)

^5:17Entonces Daniel respondió, y dijo delante del rey, “Tus dones sean para ti, y tus presentes dalos a otro.

Todavía la escritura yo la leeré al rey, y le declararé la interpretación.

^5:18El Altísimo Dios, oh rey, dio a Nabucodonosor tu padre el reino, y la grandeza, y la gloria, y la honra;

^5:19y por la grandeza que le dio, todos los pueblos, naciones, y lenguas, temblaban y temían delante de él. A quien quería, mataba, y a quien quería, dejaba con vida; a quien quería, engrandecía, y a quien quería, humillaba.

^5:20Pero cuando su corazón se ensoberbeció, y su espíritu se endureció en altivez, fue depuesto del trono de su reino, y traspasaron de él la gloria; ^5:21y fue echado de entre los hijos de los hombres; y su corazón fue puesto con las bestias, y con los asnos monteses fue su morada. Hierba le hicieron comer como a buey, y su cuerpo fue bañado con el rocío del cielo, hasta que reconoció que el Altísimo Dios señorea en el reino de los hombres, y que pone sobre él a quien le place.

§El complemento   Conclusión: Daniel reprendió al rey, y el rey fue asesinado esa misma noche (5:22 - 31)

¶El complemento   Daniel reprendió la arrogancia y el orgullo del rey, que usó los vasos de Jehová Dios para emborracharse (5:22 - 23)

^5:22Y tú, su hijo Belsasar, no has humillado tu corazón, sabiendo todo esto;

^5:23sino te has levantado a sí mismo contra el Señor del Cielo.

E hiciste traer delante de ti los vasos de su casa; y tú y tus príncipes, tus esposas y tus concubinas, habéis bebido vino en ellos;

y tú has alabado a los dioses de plata y oro, de bronce, hierro, madera y piedra; cual no ven ni oyen; ni saber.

Y al Dios en cuya mano está tu vida, y de quien son todos tus caminos, no honraste.

¶El complemento   El rey nombró a Daniel como tercer gobernante del reino, justo antes de que lo matara el ejército de los medianos (5:24 - 31)

^5:24Entonces de su presencia fue enviada la palma de la mano que esculpió esta escritura. ^5:25Y la escritura que esculpió es, ‘MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPARSIN’.

^5:26Ésta es la interpretación del asunto, ‘MENE’: Contó Dios tu reino, y le ha puesto fin. ^5:27‘TEKEL’: Pesado has sido en balanza y fuiste hallado falto. ^5:28‘PERES’: Tu reino ha sido dividido, y dado a los medos y a los persas”.

^5:29Entonces, Belsasar mandó; vistieron a Daniel de púrpura, y en su cuello fue puesto un collar de oro.

Y pregonaron de él que fuese el tercer señor en el reino.

^5:30La misma noche fue muerto Belsasar, rey de los caldeos; ^5:31y Darío de Media tomó el reino, siendo de sesenta y dos años.
