Numbers, Chapter 2.1: Israel moved from troubles to victory as they approached the Promised Land (20:1 - 21:35)

Introduction: Moses allowed his old nature to guide his response to the demand of the people for water, and he was punished (20:1 - 13)

^20:1Then the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came into the desert of Zin in the first month; and the people stayed in Kadesh.

And Miriam died there;

and she was buried there.

^20:2And there was no water for the congregation.

And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron; ^20:3and the people contended with Moses, and spoke, saying, “Would God that we had died when our brethren died before Jehovah! ^20:4And why have you brought up the congregation of Jehovah into this wilderness, that we and our livestock should die there? ^20:5And why have you made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us into this evil place? It is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.”

¶Opposite   Moses and Aaron disobeyed the command of Jehovah to speak to the rock and were punished (20:6 - 13)

^20:6And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the door of the Tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces; and the glory of Jehovah appeared to them.

^20:7And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying, ^20:8“Take the rod; and gather the assembly together (you and Aaron your brother), and speak to the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and you shall bring forth water to them out of the rock; so shall you give the congregation and their beasts drink.”

^20:9And Moses took the rod from before Jehovah, as he commanded him; ^20:10and Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels! Must we bring you water out of this rock?" ^20:11And Moses lifted up his hand, and he struck the rock twice with his rod; and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.

^20:12And Jehovah spoke to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not believe me, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel; therefore you shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.”

^20:13This is the water of Meribah, because the children of Israel contended with Jehovah; and he was sanctified in them.

§Complement   Body: The children of Israel were forced to circle the land of Edom, and experienced losses and victories along the way (20:14 - 21:9)

^20:14And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, saying, “Thus says your brother Israel: ‘You know all the travail that has befallen us: ^20:15how our fathers went down into Egypt.

And we have dwelt in Egypt a long time.

And the Egyptians oppressed us, and our fathers.

^20:16And when we cried to Jehovah, he heard our voice.

And he sent a messenger; and he has brought us forth out of Egypt.

¶Opposite   The Edomites refused to allow Israel passage through their land (20:16b - 21)

And, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of your border. ^20:17Please, let us pass through your country. We will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards; neither will we drink of the water of the wells. We will go by the king's high way; and we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed your borders.’”

^20:18And Edom said to him, “You shall not pass by me, lest I come out against you with the sword.”

^20:19And the children of Israel said to him, “We will go by the highway; and if I and my livestock drink of your water, then I will pay for it; I will only, without doing anything else, go through on my feet.”

^20:20And he said, “You shall not go through." And Edom came out against him with many people, and with a strong hand.

^20:21Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border; therefore Israel turned away from him.

¶Complement   Jehovah took the life of Aaron and Eleazar his son replaced him (20:22 - 29)

^20:22And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, journeyed from Kadesh, and they came to mount Hor.

^20:23And Jehovah spoke to Moses and Aaron in mount Hor, by the territory of the land of Edom, saying, ^20:24“Aaron shall be gathered to his people: for he shall not enter into the land which I have given to the children of Israel, because you rebelled against my Word at the water of Meribah.

^20:25Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up to mount Hor; ^20:26and strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son. And Aaron shall be gathered to his people, and shall die there.”

^20:27And Moses did as Jehovah commanded; and they went up into mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation; ^20:28and Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there in the top of the mountain.

And Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain; ^20:29and when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they mourned for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel.

¶Complement   Jehovah gave the lives of king Arad and the people of his land to the army of Israel (21:1 - 3)

^21:1And when king Arad the Canaanite (which dwelt in the south) heard that Israel came by the way of the spies, then he fought against Israel, and took prisoners of them.

^21:2And Israel vowed a vow to Jehovah; and he said, “If you will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.”

^21:3And Jehovah gave heed to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites.

And they utterly destroyed them and their cities.

And he called the name of the place “Hormah.”

¶Unique   Jehovah provided a serpent on a pole as a means of living after being bitten by a serpent (21:4 - 9)

^21:4And they journeyed from mount Hor, by the way of the Red Sea, to circle the land of Edom.

And the soul of the people was very discouraged, because of the way. ^21:5And the people spoke against God; and against Moses, saying, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no bread; neither is there any water. And our soul loathes this light bread!”

^21:6And Jehovah sent fiery serpents among the people; and they bit the people; and many people of Israel died. ^21:7Therefore the people came to Moses, and they said, “We have sinned: for we have spoken against Jehovah, and against you. Pray to Jehovah, that he takes away the serpents from us.”

And Moses prayed for the people; ^21:8and Jehovah said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent; and set it upon a pole. And it shall come to pass, that everyone that is bitten, when he looks upon it, shall live.”

^21:9And Moses made a serpent of brass; and he put it upon a pole. And it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

^21:10And the children of Israel set forward, and camped in Oboth. ^21:11And they journeyed from Oboth; and they camped at Ije-abarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the sunrise. ^21:12From there they moved; and they camped in the valley of Zared. ^21:13From there they moved; and they camped on the other side of the Arnon wadi, which is in the wilderness that comes out of the borders of the Amorites: for Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites. ^21:14Therefore it is said in the book of the wars of Jehovah, “What he did in the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon; ^21:15and at the stream of the brooks that goes down to the dwelling of Ar, and lies upon the border of Moab.”

^21:16And from there they went to Beer; that is the well of which Jehovah spoke to Moses, “Gather the people together; and I will give them water.” ^21:17Then Israel sang this song, “Spring up, O well; sing to it. ^21:18The princes dug the well, the nobles of the people dug it, by the direction of the Lawgiver, with their sticks.”

And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah; ^21:19and from Mattanah to Nahaliel; and from Nahaliel to Bamoth; ^21:20and from Bamoth in the valley, that is in the country of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looks toward Jeshimon. ^21:21And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying, ^21:22“Let me pass through your land. We will not turn into the fields, or into the vineyards; we will not drink of the water of the well; but we will go along by the king's high way, until we are past your borders.”

^21:23And Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness. And he came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

^21:24And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword; and he possessed his land from Arnon to Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon: for the border of the children of Ammon was strong. ^21:25And Israel took all these cities; and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all its villages: ^21:26for Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto Arnon. ^21:27Therefore they that speak in proverbs say, “Come into Heshbon; let the city of Sihon be built and prepared: ^21:28for a fire has gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; it has consumed Ar of Moab, and the lords of the high places of Arnon. ^21:29Woe to you, Moab! You are undone, O people of Chemosh. He has given his sons that escaped, and his daughters, into captivity to Sihon king of the Amorites. ^21:30We have shot at them; Heshbon has perished even to Dibon, and we have laid them waste even to Nophah, which reaches to Medeba." ^21:31Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.

¶Complement   Jehovah gave Og king of Bashan, and his people and their land, to Israel (21:32 - 35)

^21:32And Moses sent men to spy on Jaazer;

and they took its villages, and drove out the Amorites that were there.

^21:33And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan; and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, to the battle at Edrei.

^21:34And Jehovah said to Moses, “Fear him not: for I have delivered him into your hand, and all his people, and his land. And you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.”

^21:35So they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him alive; and they possessed his land.

^20:19Y los hijos de Israel dijeron, “Por el camino real iremos; y si bebiéremos tus aguas yo y mis ganados, daré el precio de ellas; y sin hacer otra cosa, pasaremos a pie”.

^20:20Y él respondió, “No pasarás”. Y salió Edom contra él con mucho pueblo, y mano fuerte.

^20:21No quiso, pues, Edom dejar pasar a Israel por su término; por lo tanto se apartó Israel de él.

^20:25Toma a Aarón y a Eleazar su hijo, y hazlos subir al monte de Hor; ^20:26y haz desnudar a Aarón sus vestiduras, y viste de ellas a Eleazar su hijo. Y Aarón será reunido con su pueblo, y allí morirá”.

^20:27Y Moisés hizo como Jehová le mandó: y subieron al monte de Hor a ojos de toda la congregación. ^20:28Y Moisés hizo desnudar a Aarón de sus vestiduras y se las vistió a Eleazar su hijo: y Aarón murió allí en la cumbre del monte.

Y Moisés y Eleazar descendieron del monte; ^20:29y cuando toda la congregación vio que Aarón había muerto, le hicieron duelo por treinta días todas las familias de Israel.

^21:6Y Jehová envió entre el pueblo serpientes ardientes, que mordían al pueblo: y murió mucho pueblo de Israel. ^21:7Entonces el pueblo vino a Moisés, y dijeron, “Hemos pecado: por haber hablado contra Jehová, y contra ti: ruega a Jehová que quite de nosotros estas serpientes”.

Y Moisés oró por el pueblo. ^21:8Y Jehová dijo a Moisés, “Hazte una serpiente ardiente, y ponla sobre un asta; y será que cualquiera que fuere mordido y mirare a ella, vivirá”.

^21:9Y Moisés hizo una serpiente de bronce y la puso sobre un asta; y sucedía que cuando una serpiente mordía a alguno, si éste miraba a la serpiente de bronce, vivía.

^21:10Y partieron los hijos de Israel, y acamparon en Obot. ^21:11Y habiendo partido de Obot acamparon en Ije-abarim, en el desierto que está delante de Moab, al nacimiento del sol. ^21:12Partiendo de allí, acamparon en el valle de Zered. ^21:13De allí se movieron, y acamparon al otro lado de Arnón, que está en el desierto, y que sale del término del amorreo: porque Arnón es frontera de Moab, entre Moab y el amorreo. ^21:14Por tanto se dice en el libro de las batallas de Jehová, “Lo que hizo en el Mar Rojo, y en los arroyos de Arnón; ^21:15y a la corriente de los arroyos que va a parar en Ar, y descansa en el término de Moab”.

^21:16Y de allí vinieron a Beer; éste es el pozo del cual Jehová habló a Moisés, “Reúne al pueblo, y les daré agua”. ^21:17Entonces cantó Israel esta canción, “Sube, oh pozo; a él cantad. ^21:18Pozo, el cual cavaron los señores; lo cavaron los príncipes del pueblo, y el legislador, con sus báculos”.

Y del desierto se fueron a Mataná, ^21:19y de Mataná a Nahaliel; y de Nahaliel a Bamot; ^21:20y de Bamot al valle que está en los campos de Moab, y a la cumbre de Pisga, que mira a Jesimón. ^21:21Y envió Israel embajadores a Sehón, rey de los amorreos, diciendo, ^21:22“Pasaré por tu tierra: no nos apartaremos por los labrados, ni por las viñas; no beberemos las aguas de los pozos: por el camino real iremos, hasta que pasemos tu término”.

^21:23Pero Sehón no dejó pasar a Israel por su término, antes juntó Sehón todo su pueblo, y salió contra Israel en el desierto; y vino a Jahaza, y peleó contra Israel.

^21:24Y lo hirió Israel a filo de espada, y tomó su tierra desde Arnón hasta Jaboc, hasta los hijos de Amón: porque el término de los hijos de Amón era fuerte. ^21:25Y tomó Israel todas estas ciudades, y habitó Israel en todas las ciudades de los amorreos, en Hesbón y en todas sus aldeas: ^21:26porque Hesbón era la ciudad de Sehón, rey de los amorreos; el cual había tenido guerra antes con el rey de Moab, y tomado de su poder toda su tierra hasta Arnón. ^21:27Por tanto, dicen los proverbistas, “Venid a Hesbón, edifíquese y repárese la ciudad de Sehón: ^21:28que fuego salió de Hesbón, y llama de la ciudad de Sehón, y consumió a Ar de Moab, a los señores de los lugares altos de Arnón. ^21:29¡Ay de ti, Moab! Has perecido, pueblo de Quemos: A sus hijos que escaparon, y sus hijas, dio a cautividad, a Sehón rey de los amorreos. ^21:30Pero devastamos el reino de ellos; pereció Hesbón hasta Dibón, y destruimos hasta Nofa y Medeba”. ^21:31Así habitó Israel en la tierra del amorreo.

^21:34Entonces Jehová dijo a Moisés, “No le tengas miedo, que en tu mano lo he dado, a él y a todo su pueblo, y a su tierra. Y harás de él como hiciste de Sehón, rey de los amorreos, que habitaba en Hesbón”.

^21:35E hirieron a él, y a sus hijos, y a toda su gente, sin que le quedara uno, y poseyeron su tierra.
