Numbers, Chapter 1.4: The people rebelled against Jehovah at Kadesh-Barnea (12:1 - 14:45)

And Jehovah heard it.

^12:3Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth. ^12:4And Jehovah spoke suddenly to Moses, to Aaron, and to Miriam, “Come out, you three, to the Tabernacle of the congregation!” And they three came out.

^12:5And Jehovah came down in the pillar of the cloud; and he stood in the door of the Tabernacle. And he called Aaron and Miriam; and they both came forth. ^12:6And he said, “Hear now my words: if there is a Prophet among you, I Jehovah will make myself known to him in a vision, and I will speak to him in a dream. ^12:7My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all my house. ^12:8With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even appearing in person, and not in dark sayings; and the similitude of Jehovah shall he behold. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?”

^12:9And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against them, and he departed; ^12:10and the cloud departed from the Tabernacle. And, behold, Miriam became leprous: as white as snow; and Aaron looked upon Miriam: and, behold, she was leprous. ^12:11And Aaron said to Moses, “Alas, my lord, please, do not lay the sin upon us, wherein we have done foolishly, and wherein we have sinned. ^12:12Let her not be as one dead, of whom the flesh is half consumed when he comes out of his mother's womb!”

^12:13And Moses cried to Jehovah, saying, “Please heal her now, O God!” ^12:14And Jehovah said to Moses, “If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be ashamed seven days? Let her be shut out from the camp seven days; and after that let her be received in again.”

^12:15And Miriam was shut out from the camp seven days.

And the people did not journey until Miriam was brought in again.

^12:16And afterward the people moved from Hazeroth, and camped in the wilderness of Paran.

All those men were leaders of the children of Israel. ^13:4And these were their names: of the tribe of Reuben: Shammua the son of Zaccur; ^13:5of the tribe of Simeon: Shaphat the son of Hori; ^13:6of the tribe of Judah: Caleb the son of Jephunneh; ^13:7of the tribe of Issachar: Igal the son of Joseph; ^13:8of the tribe of Ephraim: Oshea the son of Nun; ^13:9of the tribe of Benjamin: Palti the son of Raphu; ^13:10of the tribe of Zebulun: Gaddiel the son of Sodi; ^13:11of the tribe of Joseph (of the tribe of Manasseh): Gaddi the son of Susi; ^13:12of the tribe of Dan: Ammiel the son of Gemalli; ^13:13of the tribe of Asher: Sethur the son of Michael; ^13:14of the tribe of Naphtali: Nahbi the son of Vophsi; ^13:15of the tribe of Gad: Geuel the son of Machi. ^13:16These are the names of the men which Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun: “Jehoshua”.

^13:17And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and he said to them, “Go up this way into the south, and go up into the mountain. ^13:18And see the land, what it is; and the people that dwell in it, whether they are strong or weak, few or many; ^13:19and see what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in tents, or in strongholds; ^13:20and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean; whether there is wood in it, or not. And be courageous, and bring some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the time of the first ripe grapes.

^13:21So they went up, and searched the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, as men come to Hamath. ^13:22And they ascended by the south, and came to Hebron, where were Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

^13:23And they came to the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from there a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they carried it between two men upon a staff; and they brought some of the pomegranates and some of the figs. ^13:24The place was called the brook Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from there.

^13:25And they returned from searching of the land after forty days. ^13:26And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and they brought back word to them, and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. ^13:27And they told him, and said, “We came to the land where you sent us, and truly it flows with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.

^13:28Nevertheless the people are strong that dwell in the land; and the cities are walled, and very great; and moreover we saw the children of Anak there. ^13:29The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south; and the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the territory of Jordan.”

^13:30And Caleb stilled the people before Moses; and said, “Let us go up at once, and possess it: for we are well able to overcome it!”

^13:31But the men that went up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people: for they are stronger than we.”

^13:32And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched to the children of Israel, saying, “The land, through which we went to search it, is a land that eats up its inhabitants. And all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. ^13:33And there we saw the Nephalim, the giant sons of Anak, which come of the Nephalim. And we were in our own sight like grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.”

^14:1And all the congregation lifted up their voices, and cried; and the people wept that night.

^14:2And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron; and the whole congregation said to them, “Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt!” Or, “Would God we had died in this wilderness! ^14:3And why has Jehovah brought us to this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? Is it not better for us to return into Egypt?”

^14:4And they said one to another, “Let us make a leader; and let us return into Egypt!”

^14:5Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel. ^14:6And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, tore their clothes. ^14:7And they spoke to all the company of the children of Israel, saying, “The land, which we passed through to search it, is a very good land. ^14:8If Jehovah delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it to us: a land that flows with milk and honey. ^14:9Only do not rebel against Jehovah; neither fear the people of the land: for they are bread for us. Their defense has departed from them, and Jehovah is with us. Fear them not!”

^14:10But all the congregation said to stone them with stones.

And the glory of Jehovah appeared in the Tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel. ^14:11And Jehovah said to Moses, “How long will this people provoke me? And how long will it be before they believe me, for all the signs which I have shown among them? ^14:12I will smite them with the plague, and disinherit them. And I will make of you a greater nation and mightier than they.”

^14:13And Moses said to Jehovah, “Then the Egyptians shall hear it: for you brought up this people in your might from among them; ^14:14and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land.

For they have heard that you Jehovah are among this people, that you Jehovah are seen face to face; and that your cloud stands over them, and that you go before them, by daytime in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.

^14:15Now if you shall kill all these people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of you will speak, saying, ^14:16‘Because Jehovah was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them; therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.’

^14:17And now, please let the power of my Lord be great; according as you have spoken, saying, ^14:18‘Jehovah is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation.’ ^14:19Please, pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your mercy, and as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.”

¶Unique   Jehovah pronounced Judgment against the ten unbelieving spies, but blessed Caleb for his faith (14:20 - 25)

^14:20And Jehovah said, “I have pardoned according to your word;

^14:21but as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of Jehovah.

^14:22Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not listened to my voice, ^14:23surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers; neither shall any of them that provoked me see it.

^14:24But my servant Caleb, because he had another Spirit with him, and has followed me fully, him will I bring into the land where he went; and his seed shall possess it.”

^14:25(Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) “Tomorrow turn; and go into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.”

And all that were counted of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me, ^14:30doubtless you shall not come into the land, concerning which I swore to make you dwell in it, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

^14:31But your little ones, which you said should be a prey, them will I bring in. And they shall know the land which you have despised.

^14:32But as for you, your corpses, they shall fall in this wilderness. ^14:33And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your corpses are wasted in the wilderness.

^14:34After the number of the days in which you searched the land (forty days, each day for a year) shall you bear your iniquities, even forty years; and you shall know my breach of promise.’

^14:35I Jehovah have said, ‘I will surely do it to all this evil congregation that have gathered together against me. They shall be consumed in this wilderness, and there shall they die.’”

^14:36And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned and made all the congregation to murmur against him by bringing up a slander upon the land, ^14:37even those men that brought up the evil report upon the land died by the plague before Jehovah.

^14:38But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived.

^14:39And Moses told these sayings to all the children of Israel; and the people mourned greatly.

^14:40And they rose up early in the morning; and they went up into the top of the mountain, saying, “See, we are here. And we will go up to the place which Jehovah has promised: for we have sinned.” ^14:41And Moses said, “Why do you now transgress the command of Jehovah? But it shall not prosper. ^14:42Do not go up (for Jehovah is not among you), so that you are not smitten before your enemies: ^14:43for the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you. And you shall fall by the sword, because you have turned away from Jehovah; therefore Jehovah will not be with you.”

^14:44But they presumed to go up to the hilltop; nevertheless the Ark of the Covenant of Jehovah, and Moses, departed not out of the camp. ^14:45Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill; and they smote them, and destroyed them, even unto Hormah.

Y esforzaos, y tomad del fruto del país”. Y el tiempo era el tiempo de las primeras uvas.

^13:21Y ellos subieron, y reconocieron la tierra desde el desierto de Zin hasta Rehob, entrando en Hamat. ^13:22Y subieron por el sur, y vinieron hasta Hebrón: y allí estaban Ahimán, y Sesai, y Talmai, hijos de Anac. (Hebrón fue edificada siete años antes de Zoán, la de Egipto.)

^13:23Y llegaron hasta el valle de Escol, y de allí cortaron un sarmiento con un racimo de uvas, el cual trajeron dos en un palo, y de las granadas y de los higos. ^13:24Y se llamó aquel lugar el valle de Escol por el racimo que cortaron de allí los hijos de Israel.

^13:31Pero los varones que subieron con él, dijeron, “No podremos subir contra aquel pueblo: porque es más fuerte que nosotros”.

^13:32Y vituperaron entre los hijos de Israel la tierra que habían reconocido, diciendo, “La tierra por donde pasamos para reconocerla, es tierra que traga a sus moradores; y todo el pueblo que vimos en medio de ella, son hombres de gran estatura. ^13:33También vimos allí nephilim, hijos de Anac, raza de los nephilim; y éramos nosotros, a nuestro parecer, como langostas; y así les parecíamos a ellos”.

^14:5Entonces Moisés y Aarón cayeron sobre sus rostros delante de toda la multitud de la congregación de los hijos de Israel. ^14:6Y Josué hijo de Nun, y Caleb hijo de Jefone, que eran de los que habían reconocido la tierra, rompieron sus vestiduras; ^14:7y hablaron a toda la congregación de los hijos de Israel, diciendo, “La tierra por donde pasamos para reconocerla, es tierra en gran manera buena. ^14:8Si Jehová se agradare de nosotros, él nos meterá en esta tierra, y nos la entregará; tierra que fluye leche y mil. ^14:9Por tanto, no seáis rebeldes contra Jehová, ni temáis al pueblo de esta tierra: porque nuestro pan son; su amparo se ha apartado de ellos, y con nosotros está Jehová. ¡No los temáis!”.

Y la gloria de Jehová se mostró en el Tabernáculo de la congregación a todos los hijos de Israel. ^14:11Y Jehová dijo a Moisés, “¿Hasta cuándo me ha de irritar este pueblo? ¿Hasta cuándo no me ha de creer con todas las señales que he hecho en medio de ellos? ^14:12Yo le heriré de mortandad, y lo destruiré, y a ti te pondré sobre una nación más grande y más fuerte que ellos”.

^14:13Y Moisés respondió a Jehová, “Lo oirán luego los egipcios: porque de en medio de ellos sacaste a este pueblo con tu fortaleza; ^14:14y lo dirán a los moradores de esta tierra;

porque han oído que tú, oh Jehová, estabas en medio de este pueblo, que ojo a ojo aparecías tú, oh Jehová, y que tu nube estaba sobre ellos, y que de día ibas delante de ellos en columna de nube, y de noche en columna de fuego.

^14:15Ahora, si matas a todo este pueblo como a un hombre, luego las naciones que hubieren oído tu fama hablarán, diciendo, ^14:16‘Porque no pudo Jehová meter este pueblo en la tierra de la cual les había jurado, los mató en el desierto’.

^14:17Ahora, pues, yo te ruego que sea magnificada la fortaleza del Señor, como tú has hablado, diciendo, ^14:18‘Jehová, lento para la ira y grande en misericordia, que perdona la iniquidad y la rebelión, y en ninguna manera tendrá por inocente al culpable; que visita la maldad de los padres sobre los hijos hasta la tercera y cuarta generación’. ^14:19Perdona ahora la iniquidad de este pueblo según la grandeza de tu misericordia, y como has perdonado a este pueblo desde Egipto hasta aquí”.

¶Único   Jehová pronunció juicio contra los diez espías incrédulos, pero bendijo a Caleb por su fe (14:20 - 25)

^14:20Y Jehová dijo, “Yo lo he perdonado conforme a tu palabra.

^14:21Pero tan cierto como vivo yo, que toda la tierra será llena de la gloria de Jehová.

^14:22Porque todos los que vieron mi gloria y mis señales que he hecho en Egipto y en el desierto, y me han tentado ya diez veces, y no han oído mi voz, ^14:23no verán la tierra de la cual juré a sus padres; no, ninguno de los que me han irritado la verá.

^14:24Salvo mi siervo Caleb, por cuanto hubo en él otro espíritu, y cumplió de ir en pos de mí, yo le meteré en la tierra donde entró y su simiente la recibirá en heredad”.

^14:25(Ahora bien, el amalecita y el cananeo habitan en el valle.) “Volveos mañana, y salid al desierto, camino del Mar Rojo”.

^14:26Y Jehová habló a Moisés y a Aarón, diciendo, ^14:27“¿Hasta cuándo oiré esta depravada multitud que murmura contra mí, las querellas de los hijos de Israel, que de mí se quejan? ^14:28Diles, ‘‘Vivo yo,’ dice Jehová, ‘que según habéis hablado a mis oídos, así haré yo con ustedes: ^14:29en este desierto caerán vuestros cuerpos; todos vuestros contados según toda vuestra cuenta, de veinte años para arriba, los cuales han murmurado contra mí, ^14:30ustedes a la verdad no entraréis en la tierra, por la cual juré que os haría habitar en ella; excepto Caleb, hijo de Jefone, y Josué, hijo de Nun.

^14:31Pero a vuestros chiquitos, de los cuales dijisteis que serían por presa, yo los introduciré, y ellos conocerán la tierra que ustedes despreciasteis.

^14:32Y en cuanto a ustedes, vuestros cuerpos caerán en este desierto. ^14:33Y vuestros hijos andarán pastoreando en el desierto cuarenta años, y ellos llevarán vuestras fornicaciones, hasta que vuestros cuerpos sean consumidos en el desierto.

^14:34Conforme al número de los días, de los cuarenta días en que reconocisteis la tierra, llevaréis vuestras iniquidades cuarenta años, un año por cada día; y conoceréis mi incumplimiento de promesa’.

^14:35Yo Jehová he hablado, ‘Así haré a toda esta multitud perversa que se ha juntado contra mí; en este desierto serán consumidos, y ahí morirán’”.

¶El complemento   Jehová se negó a bendecir la desobediencia de ellos a el mandó de él para ir al desierto (14:36 - 45)

^14:36Y los varones que Moisés envió a reconocer la tierra, que volvieron e hicieron murmurar contra él a toda la congregación, desacreditando aquel país, ^14:37aquellos varones que habían hablado mal de la tierra, murieron de plaga delante de Jehová.

^14:38Pero Josué hijo de Nun, y Caleb hijo de Jefone, quedaron con vida de entre aquellos hombres que habían ido a reconocer la tierra.

^14:39Y Moisés dijo estas cosas a todos los hijos de Israel, y el pueblo se enlutó mucho.

^14:40Y se levantaron por la mañana, y subieron a la cumbre del monte, diciendo, “Henos aquí para subir al lugar del cual ha hablado Jehová: porque hemos pecado”. ^14:41Y dijo Moisés, “¿Por qué quebrantáis el mandamiento de Jehová? Esto tampoco os sucederá bien. ^14:42No subáis (porque Jehová no está en medio de ustedes), no seáis heridos delante de vuestros enemigos: ^14:43porque el amalecita y el cananeo están allí delante de ustedes, y caeréis a espada: porque habéis dejado de seguir a Jehová, por eso Jehová no será con ustedes”.

^14:44Sin embargo, se obstinaron en subir a la cima del monte; pero el Arca del Pacto de Jehová, y Moisés, no se apartaron de en medio del campamento. ^14:45Y descendieron el amalecita y el cananeo, que habitaban en aquel monte, y los hirieron y los derrotaron, persiguiéndolos hasta Horma.
