Leviticus, Chapter 1.4: The Law of clean and unclean creatures (11:1 - 47)

Introduction: Clean and unclean creatures that may or may not be eaten or touched (11:1 - 28)

¶Opposite   Creatures (clean or unclean) that may or may not be eaten (11:1 - 12)

¶Opposite   Creatures (with exceptions) whose carcass must not be touched (11:13 - 28)

Body: Small creatures that creep whose carcasses are unclean to touch (11:29 - 38)

¶Opposite   Do not touch the carcasses of these small creatures (11:29 - 31)

¶Opposite   If their carcass falls on anything, it will be unclean (11:32 - 35)

¶Complement   Water is clean except where their carcass fell (11:36)

¶Unique   But if water is put on the sowing seed, and a carcass falls on it, it is unclean (11:38)

Conclusion: Do not eat or touch the carcass of creeping things, for Jehovah your God is holy (11:39 - 47)

^11:1And Jehovah spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying to them, ^11:2“Speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘These are the beasts which you shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth: ^11:3whatsoever parts the hoof, and is cloven-footed, and chews the cud among the beasts: that shall you eat.

^11:4Nevertheless you shall not eat these of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the hoof: the camel (because he chews the cud, but does not divide the hoof: he is unclean to you), ^11:5the coney (because he chews the cud, but does not divide the hoof: he is unclean to you), ^11:6the rabbit (because he chews the cud, but does not divide the hoof: he is unclean to you), ^11:7and the pig (though he divides the hoof, and is cloven-footed, yet he does not chew the cud: he is unclean to you).

^11:8You shall not eat of their flesh; and you shall not touch their carcass; they are unclean to you.

^11:9These shall you eat of all that are in the water: whatsoever has fins and scales in the water, in the sea, and in the rivers: them you shall eat.

^11:10And all that do not have fins and scales in the sea, and in the rivers (of all that move in the water, and of any living thing which is in the waters), they shall be an abomination to you. ^11:11They shall even be an abomination to you; you shall not eat of their flesh; but you shall have their carcasses in abomination. ^11:12Whatsoever has no fins or scales in the water, that shall be an abomination to you.

^11:13And these are they which you shall have in abomination among the birds (they shall not be eaten; they are an abomination): the eagle, the ossifrage, the osprey, ^11:14the vulture, the kite after his kind, ^11:15every raven after his kind, ^11:16the ostrich, the night hawk, the seagull, the hawk after his kind, ^11:17the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl, ^11:18the swan, the pelican, the gier eagle, ^11:19the stork, the heron after her kind, the lapwing, and the bat.

^11:20All flying insects that creep, going upon all four, shall be an abomination to you. ^11:21Yet these may you eat of every flying creeping thing that goes upon all four feet, which has legs above their feet to leap with upon the earth ^11:22(even these of them you may eat): the locust after his kind, and the bald locust after his kind, and the beetle after his kind, and the grasshopper after his kind. ^11:23But all other flying creeping things, which have four feet, shall be an abomination to you.

^11:24And for these you shall be unclean (whosoever touches the carcass of them shall be unclean until the evening; ^11:25and whosoever carries any of the carcass of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening): ^11:26the carcasses of every beast which divides the hoof, and is not cloven-footed, nor chews the cud, are unclean to you; everyone that touches them shall be unclean.

^11:27And whatsoever goes upon his paws, among all manner of beasts that go on all four feet: those are unclean to you.

Whoso touches their carcass shall be unclean until the evening. ^11:28And he that carries their carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening; they are unclean to you.

§Complement   Body: Small creatures that creep whose carcasses are unclean to touch (11:29 - 38)

^11:29These also shall be unclean to you among the creeping things that creep upon the earth: the weasel, the mouse, the tortoise after his kind, ^11:30the ferret, the chameleon, the lizard, the snail, and the mole. ^11:31These are unclean to you among all that creep. Whosoever touches them, when they are dead, shall be unclean until the evening.

^11:32And upon whatsoever any of them (when they are dead) falls, it shall be unclean; whether it is any vessel of wood, or clothing, or leather, or sack (whatsoever vessel it is, in which any work is done), it must be put into water; and it shall be unclean until the evening, so shall it be cleansed. ^11:33And every earthen vessel, in which any of them falls, whatsoever is in it shall be unclean; and you shall break it. ^11:34Of all food which may be eaten, that on which such water comes shall be unclean; and all drink that may be drunk in every such vessel shall be unclean. ^11:35And every thing upon which any part of their carcass falls shall be unclean; whether it is oven or cooking pots, they shall be broken down: for they are unclean; and they shall be unclean to you.

^11:36Nevertheless a fountain or pit in which there is plenty of water shall be clean; but that which touches their carcass shall be unclean.

^11:37And if any part of their carcass falls upon any sowing seed which is to be sown, it shall be clean.

^11:38But if any water is put upon the seed, and any part of their carcass falls on it, it shall be unclean to you.

§Complement   Conclusion: Do not eat or touch the carcass of creeping things, for Jehovah your God is holy (11:39 - 47)

¶Complement   Creeping things that go on the belly, or all four feet, or have many feet must not be eaten (11:39 - 43)

^11:39And if any beast (of which you may eat) dies, he that touches its carcass shall be unclean until the evening. ^11:40And he that eats of its carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening.

He also that carries its carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening.

^11:41And every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth shall be an abomination: it shall not be eaten.

^11:42Whatsoever goes upon the belly, and whatsoever goes upon all four, or whatsoever has more feet among all creeping things that creep upon the earth, you shall not eat them: for they are an abomination.

^11:43You shall not make yourselves abominable with any creeping thing that creeps; neither shall you make yourselves unclean with them, that you should be defiled thereby.

¶Complement   Jehovah demands holiness in the matter of unclean creeping creatures, birds, and beasts (11:44 - 47)

^11:44For I am Jehovah your God;

therefore you shall sanctify yourselves.

And you shall be holy, for I am holy; neither shall you defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.

^11:45For I am Jehovah that is bringing you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God; therefore you shall be holy, for I am holy.

^11:46This is the Law of the beasts, and of the bird; and of every living creature that moves in the water, and of every creature that creeps upon the earth: ^11:47to make a difference between the unclean and clean, and between the beast that may be eaten and the beast that may not be eaten.’”

¶Único   Pero si se echa agua sobre la semilla de la siembra, y cae sobre ella un cadáver, queda inmunda (11:38)

Conclusión: No comáis ni toquéis los cadáveres de cosas que se arrastran, porque santo es Jehová vuestro Dios (11:39 - 47)

^11:1Y Jehová habló a Moisés y a Aarón, diciéndoles: ^11:2“Hablad a los hijos de Israel, diciendo, ‘Éstos son los animales que comeréis de todos los animales que están sobre la tierra. ^11:3De entre los animales, todo el de pezuña, y que tiene las pezuñas hendidas, y que rumia, éste comeréis.

^11:4Pero no comeréis de los que rumian y de los que tienen pezuña; el camello: porque rumia pero no tiene pezuña hendida, habéis de tenerlo por inmundo. ^11:5También el conejo: porque rumia, pero no tiene pezuña hendida, lo tendréis por inmundo. ^11:6Asimismo la liebre: porque rumia, pero no tiene pezuña hendida, la tendréis por inmunda. ^11:7También el puerco, aunque tiene pezuñas, y es de pezuñas hendidas, pero no rumia, lo tendréis por inmundo.

^11:8De la carne de ellos no comeréis, ni tocaréis su cuerpo muerto; los tendréis por inmundos.

^11:9Esto comeréis de todas las cosas que están en las aguas: todas las cosas que tienen aletas y escamas en las aguas del mar, y en los ríos, aquellas comeréis.

^11:10Pero todas las cosas que no tienen aletas ni escamas en el mar y en los ríos, así de todo reptil de agua como de toda cosa viviente que está en las aguas, las tendréis en abominación. ^11:11Os serán, pues, en abominación: de su carne no comeréis, y abominaréis sus cuerpos muertos. ^11:12Todo lo que no tuviere aletas y escamas en las aguas, lo tendréis en abominación.

¶Lo opuesto   Criaturas (con excepciones) cuyo cadáver no debe ser tocado (11:13 - 28)

^11:13Y de las aves, éstas tendréis en abominación; no se comerán, serán abominación: El águila, el quebrantahuesos, el esmerejón, ^11:14el milano, y el buitre según su especie; ^11:15todo cuervo según su especie. ^11:16El búho, el halcón nocturno, la gaviota, el gavilán según su especie; ^11:17la lechuza, el somormujo, el búho real, ^11:18el calamón, el pelícano, el gallinazo, ^11:19la cigüeña, la garza según su especie, la abubilla y el murciélago.

^11:20Todo insecto alado que anduviere sobre cuatro patas, tendréis en abominación. ^11:21Pero podréis comer de todo insecto alado que anda sobre cuatro patas, que tiene piernas además de sus patas para saltar con ellas sobre la tierra. ^11:22De éstos podéis comer; la langosta según su especie, y el langostín según su especie, y el argol según su especie, y el hagab según su especie. ^11:23Todo insecto alado que tenga cuatro patas, tendréis en abominación.

^11:24Y por estas cosas seréis inmundos: cualquiera que tocare a sus cuerpos muertos, será inmundo hasta la tarde; ^11:25y cualquiera que llevare algo de sus cuerpos muertos, lavará sus vestiduras, y será inmundo hasta la tarde. ^11:26Todo animal de pezuña, pero que no tiene pezuña hendida, ni rumia, tendréis por inmundo: cualquiera que los tocare será inmundo.

^11:27Y de todos los animales que andan en cuatro patas, tendréis por inmundo cualquiera que ande sobre sus garras.

Cualquiera que tocare sus cuerpos muertos, será inmundo hasta la tarde. ^11:28Y el que llevare sus cuerpos muertos, lavará sus vestiduras, y será inmundo hasta la tarde; habéis de tenerlos por inmundos.

§El complemento   Cuerpo: Pequeñas criaturas que se arrastran cuyos cadáveres son impuros al tacto (11:29 - 38)

^11:29Y éstos tendréis por inmundos de los animales que van arrastrando sobre la tierra: la comadreja, y el ratón, y la rana según su especie, ^11:30y el erizo, y el camaleón, y la iguana, y el caracol y el topo. ^11:31Éstos tendréis por inmundos de entre todos los animales; cualquiera que los tocare cuando estuvieren muertos, será inmundo hasta la tarde.

^11:32Y todo aquello sobre que cayere alguno de ellos después de muertos, será inmundo; así vaso de madera, como vestido, o piel, o saco, cualquier instrumento con que se hace obra, será metido en agua, y será inmundo hasta la tarde, y así será limpio. ^11:33Y toda vasija de barro dentro de la cual cayere alguno de ellos, todo lo que estuviere en ella será inmundo, y quebraréis la vasija. ^11:34Toda vianda que se come, sobre la cual viniere el agua de tales vasijas, será inmunda: y toda bebida que se bebiere, será en todas esas vasijas inmunda. ^11:35Y todo aquello sobre que cayere algo del cuerpo muerto de ellos, será inmundo; el horno u hornillos se derribarán; son inmundos, y por inmundos los tendréis.

^11:36Con todo, la fuente y la cisterna donde se recogen aguas, serán limpias; pero lo que hubiere tocado en sus cuerpos muertos será inmundo.

^11:37Y si parte de sus cuerpos muertos cayere sobre alguna semilla que se haya de sembrar, será limpia.

^11:38Pero si se hubiere puesto agua en la semilla, y parte de sus cuerpos muertos cayere sobre ella, la tendréis por inmunda.

§El complemento   Conclusión: No comáis ni toquéis los cadáveres de cosas que se arrastran, porque santo es Jehová vuestro Dios (11:39 - 47)

¶El complemento   No comáis cosas que se arrastran sobre el vientre, o sobre las cuatro patas, o que tienen muchas patas (11:39 - 43)

^11:39Y si algún animal que tuviereis para comer se muriere, el que tocare su cuerpo muerto será inmundo hasta la tarde. ^11:40Y el que comiere de su cuerpo muerto, lavará sus vestiduras, y será inmundo hasta la tarde.

Asimismo el que sacare su cuerpo muerto, lavará sus vestiduras, y será inmundo hasta la tarde.

^11:41Y todo animal que se arrastra sobre la tierra, es abominación; no se comerá.

^11:42Todo lo que anda sobre el pecho, y todo lo que anda sobre cuatro o más patas, de todo animal que se arrastra sobre la tierra, no lo comeréis: porque es abominación.

^11:43No os hagáis abominables con ningún animal que se arrastra, ni os contaminéis con ellos, ni seáis inmundos por ellos.

¶El complemento   Jehová exige santidad en el asunto de cosas que se arrastran, las aves y las bestias inmundas (11:44 - 47)

^11:44Porque soy Jehová vuestro Dios;

por tanto, ustedes os santificaréis.

Y seréis santos: porque yo soy santo; así que no os contaminéis con ningún animal que se arrastra sobre la tierra.

^11:45Porque soy Jehová, que os hago subir de la tierra de Egipto para ser vuestro Dio. Seréis, pues, santos: porque soy santo.

^11:46Ésta es la Ley de los animales y de las aves; y esta es la ley de cada criatura viviente que se mueve en el agua, y de todo animal que anda arrastrando sobre la tierra; ^11:47para hacer diferencia entre inmundo y limpio, y entre los animales que se pueden comer y los animales que no se pueden comer’”.
