Genesis, Chapter 2.3: Jehovah sent Joseph into Egypt (37:1 - 41:45a)

Introduction: God used the evil plots of his brothers to send Joseph into Egypt ahead of them (37:1 - 36)

^37:1And Jacob dwelt in the land in which his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan. ^37:2These are the generations of Jacob.

Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers, and the boy was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives; and Joseph brought to his father a report of their evil deeds.

^37:3Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age; and he made him a coat of many colors. ^37:4And when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him, and could not speak peacefully to him.

^37:5And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brothers; and they hated him even more. ^37:6And he said to them, “Please, hear this dream which I have dreamed: ^37:7for, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field; and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and prostrated themselves to my sheaf.” ^37:8And his brothers said to him, “Shall you indeed reign over us? Or shall you indeed rule over us?” And they hated him even more for his dreams, and for his words.

^37:9And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brothers, and said, “Behold, I have dreamed another dream; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars prostrated themselves to me.” ^37:10And he told it to his father, and to his brothers. And his father rebuked him, and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow down ourselves to you to the earth?” ^37:11And his brothers envied him, but his father considered the saying.

^37:12And his brothers went to feed their father’s flock in Shechem. ^37:13And Israel said to Joseph, “Do not your brothers feed the flock in Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them.” And he said to him, “Here I am.” ^37:14And he said to him, “Please, go see whether it is well with your brothers, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again.” So he sent him out of the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.

^37:15And a certain man found him. And, behold, he was wandering in the field; and the man asked him, saying, “What are you looking for?” ^37:16And he said, “I am looking for my brothers; please, tell me where they feed their flocks.” ^37:17And the man said, “They departed from here: for I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’”

And Joseph went after his brothers, and found them in Dothan. ^37:18And when they saw him far away, even before he came near to them, they conspired against him to kill him; ^37:19and they said one to another, “Behold, this dreamer is coming; ^37:20therefore come now, and let us kill him, and cast him into some pit. And we will say, ‘Some evil beast has devoured him’; and we shall see what will become of his dreams.” ^37:21And Reuben heard it; and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, “Let us not kill him.” ^37:22And Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness; and lay no hand upon him” (that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again).

^37:23And it came to pass, when Joseph came to his brothers, that they stripped Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colors that was on him. ^37:24And they took him, and cast him into a pit; and the pit was empty, there was no water in it. ^37:25And they sat down to eat bread. And they lifted up their eyes and looked; and, behold, a company of Ishmaelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spices and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt. ^37:26And Judah said to his brothers, “What good is it if we kill our brother, and conceal his blood? ^37:27Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites; and let our hand not be upon him: for he is our brother and our flesh.” And his brothers were content.

^37:28Then Midianite merchantmen passed by, and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver; and they brought Joseph into Egypt. ^37:29And Reuben returned to the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he tore his clothes. ^37:30And he returned to his brothers, and said, “The boy is gone. And I, where shall I go?” ^37:31And they took Joseph’s coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood; ^37:32and they sent the coat of many colors, and brought it to their father, and said, “We have found this. Know now whether it is your son’s coat or not.” ^37:33And he recognized it, and said, “It is my son’s coat; a wild beast has devoured him; Joseph is without doubt torn in pieces.” ^37:34And Jacob tore his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins; and he mourned for his son many days. ^37:35And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted; and he said, “For I will go down into the grave to my son mourning.” Thus his father wept for him. ^37:36And the Midianites sold him into Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, and captain of the guard.

^38:3And she conceived, and bore a son; and he called his name Er. ^38:4And she conceived again, and bore a son; and she called his name Onan. ^38:5And she conceived yet again, and bore a son; and called his name Shelah; and he was at Chezib, when she bore him.

^38:6And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar. ^38:7And Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of Jehovah; and Jehovah slew him. ^38:8And Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to your brother.” ^38:9And Onan knew that the seed would not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in to his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest he should give seed to his brother. ^38:10And the thing which he did displeased Jehovah; therefore he slew him also.

^38:11Then Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, “Remain a widow at your father’s house, until Shelah my son has grown”: for he said, “Lest perhaps he also dies, as his brothers did.” And Tamar went and dwelt in her father’s house.

^38:12And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah’s wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheep shearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite. ^38:13And it was told Tamar, saying, “Behold, your father-in-law is going up to Timnath to shear his sheep.” ^38:14And she put her widow’s garments off from her, and covered herself with a veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the road to Timnath: for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given to him to be his wife. ^38:15When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, because she had covered her face. ^38:16And he turned to her by the road, and said, “Come now, please, let me come in to you” (for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law). And she said, “What will you give me, that you may come in to me?” ^38:17And he said, “I will send you a kid from the flock.” And she said, “Will you give me a pledge, until you send it?” ^38:18And he said, “What pledge shall I give you?” And she said, “Your signet, and your bracelets, and your staff that is in your hand.” And he gave them to her, and came in to her, and she conceived by him. ^38:19And she arose, and went away, and laid by her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

^38:20And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman’s hand, but he did not find her. ^38:21Then he asked the men of that place, saying, “Where is the prostitute, that was openly by the roadside?” And they said, “There was no prostitute in this place.” ^38:22And he returned to Judah, and said, “I cannot find her. And also the men of the place said, ‘There was no prostitute in this place.’” ^38:23And Judah said, “Let her take it to her, lest we are shamed; behold, I sent this kid, and you have not found her.”

^38:24And it came to pass about three months later, that it was told Judah, saying, “Tamar your daughter-in-law has played the whore; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom.” And Judah said, “Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.”

^38:25When she was brought forth, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, “By the man, whose these are, am I with child.” And she said, “Please discern whose these are: the signet, bracelets, and staff.” ^38:26And Judah acknowledged them, and said, “She has been more righteous than I, because I did not give her to Shelah my son.” And he did not know her again.

^38:27And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb. ^38:28And it came to pass, when she labored, that one of them put out his hand; and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, “This one came out first.” ^38:29And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out; and she said, “How have you broken forth? This breach is upon you.” Therefore his name was called Pharez. ^38:30And afterward his brother came out, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand; and his name was called Zarah.

¶Complement   Joseph was blessed by Jehovah even after he was imprisoned (39:1 - 23)

^39:1And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmaelites, which had brought him down there. ^39:2And Jehovah was with Joseph; and he was a prosperous man. And he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. ^39:3And his master saw that Jehovah was with him, and that Jehovah made all that he did to prosper in his hand. ^39:4And Joseph found grace in his sight; and he served him. And he made him overseer over his household, and all that he had he put into his hand. ^39:5And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his household, and over all that he had, that Jehovah blessed the Egyptian’s household for Joseph’s sake; and the blessing of Jehovah was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field. ^39:6And he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand; and he did not know anything that he had, except the bread which he ate. And Joseph was handsome and masculine.

^39:7And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, “Lie with me.” ^39:8But he refused, and said to his master’s wife, “Behold, my master does not know what is with me in the house; and he has committed all that he has to my hand. ^39:9There is no one greater in this house than I; neither has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” ^39:10And it came to pass, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not listen to her, to lie by her, or to be with her.

^39:11And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business, and there was none of the men of the household there within. ^39:12And she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me”; and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and ran out. ^39:13And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and had run away, ^39:14that she called to the men of her household, and spoke to them, saying, “See, he has brought in a Hebrew to us to mock us; he came in to me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice; ^39:15and it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and ran away.” ^39:16And she laid up his garment with her, until his lord came home. ^39:17And she spoke to him according to these words, saying, “The Hebrew servant, which you brought to us, came in to me to mock me; ^39:18and it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and ran away.”

^39:19And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, “After this manner your servant did this to me”, that his wrath was kindled. ^39:20And Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were bound; and he was there in the prison.

^39:21But Jehovah was with Joseph, and showed him mercy; and gave him favor in the sight of the warden of the prison. ^39:22And the warden of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it. ^39:23The warden of the prison did not look to anything that was under his hand, because Jehovah was with him; and that which he did, Jehovah made it to prosper.

¶Complement   Joseph correctly interpreted the dreams of the chief baker and butler of Pharaoh, but remained in prison (40:1 - 23)

^40:1And it came to pass after these things, that the butler and baker of the king of Egypt offended their lord the king of Egypt. ^40:2And Pharaoh was furious against two of his officers: against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers. ^40:3And he put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound. ^40:4And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them. And they continued for some time in custody.

^40:5And they dreamed a dream both of them, each man his dream in the same night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, which were bound in the prison. ^40:6And Joseph came in to them in the morning, and looked upon them; and, behold, they were sad. ^40:7And he asked Pharaoh’s officers that were with him in the prison of his lord’s house, saying, “Why do you look so sad today?” ^40:8And they said to him, “We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it.” And Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me, please.” ^40:9And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph. And he said to him, “In my dream, behold, a vine was before me; ^40:10and in the vine were three branches; and it was as though it budded, and her blossoms shot forth, and its clusters brought forth ripe grapes. ^40:11And Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand.” ^40:12And Joseph said to him, “This is the interpretation of it: the three branches are three days; yet ^40:13within three days shall Pharaoh lift up your head, and restore you to your place; and you shall deliver Pharaoh’s cup into his hand, after the former manner when you were his butler. ^40:14But remember me when it shall be well with you, and please show kindness to me, and make mention of me to Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house: ^40:15for indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews; and also here have I done nothing that they should put me in the dungeon.”

^40:16When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Joseph, “I also was in my dream; and, behold, I had three white baskets on my head; ^40:17and in the uppermost basket was of all manner of baked goods for Pharaoh; and the birds ate them out of the basket upon my head.” ^40:18And Joseph answered and said, “This is the interpretation of it: the three baskets are three days; ^40:19yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up your head from off you, and shall hang you on a tree; and the birds shall eat your flesh from off you.”

^40:20And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a feast to all his servants; and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants. ^40:21And he restored the chief butler to his position again, and he gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand; ^40:22but he hung the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them.

^40:23Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.

¶Unique   The chief butler told Pharaoh about Joseph in the prison who had correctly interpreted his dream (41:1 - 13)

^41:1And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed; and, behold, he stood by the river. ^41:2And, behold, there came up out of the river seven well favored and fat fleshed cows, and they fed in a meadow. ^41:3And, behold, seven other cows came up after them out of the river, which were ugly and gaunt; and they stood by the other cows upon the brink of the river. ^41:4And the ugly and gaunt cows ate up the seven well favored and fat cows. So Pharaoh awoke.

^41:5And he slept and dreamed the second time: and, behold, seven ears of grain came up upon one stalk, plump and good. ^41:6And, behold, seven other ears, thin and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them; ^41:7and the seven thin ears devoured the seven plump and full ears. And Pharaoh awoke; and, behold, it was a dream.

^41:8And it came to pass in the morning, that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all its wise men; and Pharaoh told them his dream, but there was no one that could interpret them to Pharaoh.

^41:9Then the chief butler spoke to Pharaoh, saying, “I remember my faults this day. ^41:10Pharaoh was angry with his servants, and put me in custody in the captain of the guard’s house, both me and the chief baker. ^41:11And we dreamed a dream in the same night, I and he: we dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream.

^41:12“And a young man was there with us, a Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard; and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams: to each man according to his dream he interpreted. ^41:13And it came to pass, as he interpreted to us, so it was: me he restored to my office, and him he hung.”

^41:17And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “In my dream, behold, I stood upon the bank of the river; ^41:18and, behold, seven cows came up out of the river, fat fleshed and well favored, and they fed in a meadow; ^41:19and, behold, seven other cows came up after them, poor and very ugly and gaunt, such as I never saw in all the land of Egypt for ugliness; ^41:20and the gaunt and the ugly cows ate up the first seven fat cows; ^41:21and when they had eaten them up, it could not be known that they had eaten them, but they were still ugly, as at the beginning. So I awoke. ^41:22And I saw in my dream: and, behold, seven ears came up in one stalk, full and good; ^41:23and, behold, seven ears, withered, thin, and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them; ^41:24and the thin ears devoured the seven good ears. And I told this to the magicians, but there was no one that could declare it to me.”

^41:25And Joseph said to Pharaoh, “The dream of Pharaoh is the same: God has shown Pharaoh what he is about to do. ^41:26The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good ears are seven years: the dream is the same. ^41:27And the seven thin and ugly cows that came up after them are seven years, and the seven empty ears blasted with the east wind shall be seven years of famine.

^41:28“This is the thing that I have spoken to Pharaoh: what God is about to do he is showing to Pharaoh. ^41:29Behold, seven years of great abundance throughout all the land of Egypt are coming; ^41:30and after them shall arise seven years of famine. And all the abundance shall be forgotten in the land of Egypt, and the famine shall consume the land; ^41:31and the abundance shall not be known in the land by reason of that famine following: for it shall be very grievous. ^41:32And for that reason the dream was repeated to Pharaoh twice: it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.

^41:33“Now therefore let Pharaoh look out a man discreet and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt. ^41:34Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint officers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the harvest of the land of Egypt in the seven abundant years. ^41:35And let them gather all the food of those good years that are coming, and lay up grain under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities. ^41:36And that food shall be for reserve to the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Egypt, so that the land does not perish through the famine.”

¶Complement   Pharaoh accepted Joseph’s advice and made him his prime minister over all Egypt (41:37 - 45a)

^41:37And the thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants.

^41:38And Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom is the Spirit of God?”

^41:39And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Forasmuch as God has shown you all this, there is no one so discreet and wise as you. ^41:40You shall be over my household; and according to your word shall all my people be ruled. Only in the throne will I be greater than you.”

^41:41And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.” ^41:42And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph’s hand; and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain around his neck; ^41:43and he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him, “Bow the knee!” And he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt.

^41:44And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh; and without you shall no man lift up his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.” ^41:45And Pharaoh called Joseph’s name Zaphnath-paaneah; and he gave him Asenath the daughter of Poti-pherah priest of On to be his wife.

^37:5Y soñó José un sueño y lo contó a sus hermanos; y vinieron a aborrecerle más todavía. ^37:6Y él les dijo, “Oíd ahora este sueño que he soñado: ^37:7he aquí que atábamos manojos en medio del campo, y he aquí que mi manojo se levantaba, y estaba derecho, y que vuestros manojos estaban alrededor, y se inclinaban al mío”. ^37:8Y le respondieron sus hermanos, “¿Has de reinar tú sobre nosotros? ¿O te has de enseñorear sobre nosotros?”. Y le aborrecieron aún más a causa de sus sueños y de sus palabras.

^37:9Y soñó aún otro sueño, y lo contó a sus hermanos, diciendo, “He aquí, que he soñado otro sueño, y he aquí que el sol y la luna y once estrellas se inclinaban a mí”. ^37:10Y lo contó a su padre y a sus hermanos: y su padre le reprendió, y le dijo, “¿Qué sueño es éste que soñaste? ¿Hemos de venir yo y tu madre, y tus hermanos, a inclinarnos a ti a tierra?”. ^37:11Y sus hermanos le tenían envidia, pero su padre guardaba aquellas palabras.

¶Lo opuesto   Los hermanos de José conspiraron contra él y mintieron a su padre para encubrir sus acciones (37:12 - 36)

^37:12Y fueron sus hermanos a apacentar las ovejas de su padre en Siquem. ^37:13Y dijo Israel a José, “¿No están tus hermanos apacentando las ovejas en Siquem? Ven, y te enviaré a ellos”. Y él respondió, “Heme aquí”. ^37:14Y él le dijo, “Ve ahora, mira cómo están tus hermanos y cómo están las ovejas, y tráeme la respuesta”. Y lo envió del valle de Hebrón, y llegó a Siquem.

^37:15Y lo halló un hombre, andando él extraviado por el campo, y le preguntó aquel hombre, diciendo, “¿Qué buscas?”. ^37:16Y él respondió, “Busco a mis hermanos; te ruego que me muestres dónde apacientan sus ovejas”. ^37:17Y aquel hombre respondió, “Ya se han ido de aquí; yo les oí decir, ‘Vamos a Dotán’”.

Entonces José fue tras de sus hermanos, y los halló en Dotán. ^37:18Y cuando ellos lo vieron de lejos, antes que llegara cerca de ellos, conspiraron contra él para matarle. ^37:19Y dijeron el uno al otro, “He aquí viene el soñador; ^37:20venid, pues, ahora; matémosle y echémosle en un pozo, y diremos, ‘Alguna mala bestia le devoró’; y veremos qué será de sus sueños”. ^37:21Y cuando Rubén oyó esto, lo libró de sus manos y dijo, “No lo matemos”. ^37:22Y les dijo Rubén, “No derraméis sangre; echadlo en este pozo que está en el desierto, y no pongáis mano en él” (por librarlo así de sus manos, para hacerlo volver a su padre).

^37:23Y sucedió que, cuando llegó José a sus hermanos, hicieron desnudar a José su ropa, la ropa de colores que tenía sobre sí; ^37:24y le tomaron y le echaron en el pozo; pero el pozo estaba vacío, no había agua en él. ^37:25Y se sentaron a comer pan; y alzando los ojos miraron, y he aquí una compañía de ismaelitas que venía de Galaad, y sus camellos traían aromas y bálsamo y mirra, e iban para llevarlo a Egipto. ^37:26Entonces Judá dijo a sus hermanos, “¿Qué provecho hay en que matemos a nuestro hermano y encubramos su muerte? ^37:27Venid, y vendámosle a los ismaelitas, y no sea nuestra mano sobre él; que nuestro hermano es nuestra carne”. Y sus hermanos acordaron con él.

^37:28Y cuando pasaron los mercaderes madianitas, sacaron ellos a José del pozo y le trajeron arriba, y le vendieron a los ismaelitas por veinte piezas de plata. Y llevaron a José a Egipto. ^37:29Y Rubén volvió al pozo, y he aquí, José no estaba en el pozo, y rasgó sus vestiduras. ^37:30Y volvió a sus hermanos, y dijo, “El joven no aparece. ¿Y yo, adónde iré yo?”. ^37:31Entonces tomaron ellos la túnica de José, y degollaron un cabrito de las cabras, y tiñeron la túnica con la sangre; ^37:32y enviaron la túnica de colores y la trajeron a su padre, y dijeron, “Esto hemos hallado, reconoce ahora si es o no la túnica de tu hijo”. ^37:33Y él la reconoció, y dijo, “La túnica de mi hijo es; alguna mala bestia le devoró; José ha sido despedazado”. ^37:34Entonces Jacob rasgó sus vestiduras, y puso cilicio sobre sus lomos, y se enlutó por su hijo muchos días. ^37:35Y se levantaron todos sus hijos y todas sus hijas para consolarlo; pero él no quiso recibir consuelo, y dijo, “Porque yo descenderé enlutado a mi hijo hasta la sepultura”. Y lo lloró su padre. ^37:36Y los madianitas lo vendieron en Egipto a Potifar, oficial de Faraón, capitán de la guardia.

§El complemento   Cuerpo: José pasó tiempo en prisión en Egipto por una acusación falsa, pero Dios estaba con él (38:1 - 41:13)

¶Lo opuesto   Los primeros dos hijos de Judá fueron asesinados por Jehová, dejando a Tamar viuda y sin hijos (38:1 - 11)

^38:1Y aconteció en aquel tiempo, que Judá descendió de donde estaban sus hermanos; y se fue a un varón adulamita, que se llamaba Hira.

^38:2Y Judá vio allí a la hija de un hombre cananeo, el cual se llamaba Súa; y la tomó, y entró a ella.

^38:3La cual concibió, y dio a luz un hijo; y llamó su nombre Er. ^38:4Y concibió otra vez, y dio a luz un hijo, y llamó su nombre Onán. ^38:5Y volvió a concebir, y dio a luz un hijo, y llamó su nombre Sela. Y estaba en Quezib cuando lo dio a luz.

^38:6Y Judá tomó esposa para su primogénito Er, la cual se llamaba Tamar. ^38:7Y Er, el primogénito de Judá, fue malo ante los ojos de Jehová, y Jehová le quitó la vida. ^38:8Entonces Judá dijo a Onán, “Entra a la esposa de tu hermano, y despósate con ella, y levanta simiente a tu hermano”. ^38:9Y sabiendo Onán que la simiente no había de ser suya, sucedía que cuando entraba a la esposa de su hermano vertía en tierra, por no dar simiente a su hermano. ^38:10Y desagradó en ojos de Jehová lo que hacía, y a él también le quitó la vida.

^38:11Y Judá dijo a Tamar su nuera, “Quédate viuda en casa de tu padre, hasta que crezca Sela mi hijo”: porque dijo, “No sea que como sus hermanos también él muera”. Y se fue Tamar, y moró en la casa de su padre.

¶Lo opuesto   Tamar engañó Judá para hacer a ella a embarazada, pero salvó su vida con la promesa desde Judá (38:12 - 30)

^38:12Y pasaron muchos días, y murió la hija de Súa, esposa de Judá; y Judá se consoló, y subía a los trasquiladores de sus ovejas a Timnat, él y su amigo Hira el adulamita. ^38:13Y fue dado aviso a Tamar, diciendo, “He aquí tu suegro sube a Timnat a trasquilar sus ovejas”. ^38:14Entonces ella se quitó los vestidos de su viudez, y se cubrió con un velo, y se arrebozó, y se puso a la puerta de las Aguas que está junto al camino de Timnat: porque veía que había crecido Sela, y ella no era dada a él por esposa. ^38:15Y cuando la vio Judá, pensó que era una ramera: porque ella había cubierto su rostro. ^38:16Y se apartó del camino hacia ella, y le dijo, “Vamos, déjame ahora allegarme a ti” (pues no sabía que era su nuera). Y ella dijo, “¿Qué me darás si te allegares a mí?”. ^38:17Él respondió, “Yo te enviaré del ganado un cabrito de las cabras”. Y ella dijo, “¿Me darás prenda hasta que lo envíes?”. ^38:18Entonces él dijo, “¿Qué prenda te daré?”. Ella respondió, “Tu anillo, tu cordón y el bordón que tienes en tu mano”. Y él se los dio y entró a ella, la cual concibió de él. ^38:19Entonces ella se levantó, y se fue; y se quitó el velo de sobre sí, y se vistió las ropas de su viudez.

^38:20Y Judá envió el cabrito de las cabras por mano de su amigo el adulamita, para que tomase la prenda de mano de la mujer; pero no la halló. ^38:21Y preguntó a los hombres de aquel lugar, diciendo, “¿Dónde está la ramera de las aguas junto al camino?”. Y le dijeron, “Aquí no ha estado ninguna ramera”. ^38:22Entonces él se volvió a Judá, y dijo, “No la he hallado; y también los hombres del lugar dijeron, ‘Ninguna ramera ha estado aquí’”. ^38:23Y Judá dijo, “Tómeselo para sí, para que no seamos menospreciados; he aquí yo he enviado este cabrito, y tú no la hallaste”.

^38:24Y aconteció que al cabo de unos tres meses fue dado aviso a Judá, diciendo, “Tamar tu nuera ha fornicado, y he aquí que está encinta de las fornicaciones”. Y Judá dijo, “Sacadla, y sea quemada”.

^38:25Y cuando la sacaban, ella envió a decir a su suegro, “Del varón cuyas son estas cosas, estoy encinta”. También dijo, “Mira ahora de quién son estas cosas, el anillo, el cordón y el bordón”. ^38:26Entonces Judá los reconoció, y dijo, “Más justa es que yo, por cuanto no la he dado a Sela mi hijo”. Y nunca más la conoció.

^38:27Y aconteció que al tiempo de dar a luz, he aquí había dos en su vientre. ^38:28Y sucedió que cuando daba a luz, uno de ellos sacó la mano, y la partera tomó y ató a su mano un hilo de grana, diciendo, “Éste salió primero”. ^38:29Y aconteció que tornando él a meter la mano, he aquí su hermano salió; y ella dijo, “¿Por qué has hecho? Sobre ti rotura”. Y llamó su nombre Fares. ^38:30Y después salió su hermano, el que tenía en su mano el hilo de grana, y llamó su nombre Zara.

¶El complemento   José fue bendecido por Jehová incluso después de haber sido encarcelado (39:1 - 23)

^39:1Y José fue llevado a Egipto; y Potifar, oficial de Faraón, capitán de la guardia, varón egipcio, lo compró de mano de los ismaelitas que lo habían llevado allá. ^39:2Pero Jehová estaba con José, y fue un varón próspero; y estaba en la casa de su señor el egipcio. ^39:3Y vio su señor que Jehová estaba con él, y que todo lo que él hacía, Jehová lo hacía prosperar en su mano. ^39:4Así halló José gracia en sus ojos, y le servía; y él le hizo mayordomo de su casa, y entregó en su poder todo lo que tenía. ^39:5Y aconteció que, desde cuando le dio el encargo de su casa, y de todo lo que tenía, Jehová bendijo la casa del egipcio a causa de José; y la bendición de Jehová estaba sobre todo lo que tenía, así en casa como en el campo. ^39:6Y dejó todo lo que tenía en mano de José; y él no se preocupaba de nada sino del pan que comía. Y era José de hermoso semblante y bella presencia.

^39:7Y aconteció después de esto, que la esposa de su señor puso sus ojos en José, y dijo, “Acuéstate conmigo”. ^39:8Y él no quiso, y dijo a la esposa de su señor, “He aquí que mi señor no sabe conmigo lo que hay en casa, y ha puesto en mi mano todo lo que tiene. ^39:9No hay otro mayor que yo en esta casa, y ninguna cosa me ha reservado sino a ti, por cuanto tú eres su esposa. ¿Cómo, pues, haría yo este grande mal y pecaría contra Dios?”. ^39:10Y fue que, hablando ella a José cada día, que él no la escuchó para acostarse al lado de ella, o para estar con ella.

^39:11Y sucedió que entró él un día en casa para hacer su oficio, y no había nadie de los de casa allí. ^39:12Y ella lo asió por su ropa, diciendo: Acuéstate conmigo. Entonces él dejó su ropa en las manos de ella, y huyó y salió. ^39:13Y aconteció que cuando vio ella que le había dejado su ropa en sus manos, y había huido fuera, ^39:14llamó a los de casa, y les habló, diciendo, “Mirad, nos ha traído un hebreo para que hiciese burla de nosotros. Vino él a mí para acostarse conmigo, y yo di grandes voces; ^39:15y viendo que yo alzaba la voz y gritaba, dejó junto a mí su ropa, y salió huyendo afuera”. ^39:16Y ella puso junto a sí la ropa de él, hasta que vino su señor a su casa. ^39:17Entonces le habló ella semejantes palabras, diciendo, “El siervo hebreo que nos trajiste, vino a mí para deshonrarme; ^39:18y como yo alcé mi voz y grité, él dejó su ropa junto a mí, y huyó fuera”.

^39:19Y sucedió que como oyó su señor las palabras que su esposa le hablaba, diciendo, “Así me ha tratado tu siervo”, se encendió su furor. ^39:20Y tomó su señor a José, y le puso en la cárcel, donde estaban los presos del rey, y estuvo allí en la cárcel.

^39:21Pero Jehová estaba con José, y extendió a él su misericordia, y le dio gracia ante los ojos del jefe de la cárcel. ^39:22Y el jefe de la cárcel entregó en mano de José todos los presos que había en aquella prisión; todo lo que hacían allí, él lo dirigía. ^39:23No veía el jefe de la cárcel cosa alguna que en su mano estaba: porque Jehová estaba con él, y lo que él hacía, Jehová lo prosperaba.

¶El complemento   José interpretó correctamente los sueños del panadero y mayordomo de Faraón, pero permaneció en prisión (40:1 - 23)

^40:1Y aconteció después de estas cosas, que el mayordomo del rey de Egipto y el panadero delinquieron contra su señor el rey de Egipto. ^40:2Y Faraón se enojó contra sus dos oficiales, contra el jefe de los mayordomos, y contra el jefe de los panaderos, ^40:3y los puso en prisión en la casa del capitán de la guardia, en la cárcel donde José estaba preso. ^40:4Y el capitán de la guardia dio cargo de ellos a José, y él les servía: y estuvieron días en la prisión.

^40:5Y ambos, el mayordomo y el panadero del rey de Egipto, que estaban arrestados en la prisión, tuvieron un sueño, cada uno su propio sueño en una misma noche, cada uno conforme a la interpretación de su sueño. ^40:6Y por la mañana José vino a ellos, y los miró, y he aquí que estaban tristes. ^40:7Y él preguntó a aquellos oficiales de Faraón, que estaban con él en la prisión de la casa de su señor, diciendo, “¿Por qué parecen hoy mal vuestros semblantes?”. ^40:8Y le dijeron, “Hemos tenido un sueño, y no hay quien lo interprete”. Entonces les dijo José, “¿No son de Dios las interpretaciones? Contádmelo ahora”. ^40:9Entonces el jefe de los mayordomos contó su sueño a José, y le dijo, “Yo soñaba que veía una vid delante de mí, ^40:10y en la vid tres sarmientos; y ella como que brotaba, y arrojaba su flor, viniendo a madurar sus racimos de uvas. ^40:11Y que la copa de Faraón estaba en mi mano, y tomaba yo las uvas, y las exprimía en la copa de Faraón, y daba yo la copa en mano de Faraón”. ^40:12Y le dijo José, “Ésta es su interpretación: los tres sarmientos son tres días: ^40:13al cabo de tres días Faraón te hará levantar cabeza, y te restituirá a tu puesto: y darás la copa a Faraón en su mano, como solías cuando eras su mayordomo. ^40:14Acuérdate, pues, de mí cuando tuvieres ese bien, y te ruego que uses conmigo de misericordia, y hagas mención de mí a Faraón, y me saques de esta casa: ^40:15porque fui hurtado de la tierra de los hebreos; y tampoco he hecho aquí por qué me hubiesen de poner en la cárcel”.

^40:16Y viendo el jefe de los panaderos que había interpretado para bien, dijo a José, “También yo soñaba que veía tres canastillos blancos sobre mi cabeza; ^40:17y en el canastillo más alto había de toda clase de pastelería para Faraón; y las aves las comían del canastillo de sobre mi cabeza”. ^40:18Entonces respondió José, y dijo, “Ésta es la interpretación: Los tres canastillos tres días son. ^40:19Al cabo de tres días quitará Faraón tu cabeza de sobre ti, y te hará colgar en la horca, y las aves comerán tu carne de sobre ti”.

^40:20Y aconteció el tercer día, que era el día del cumpleaños de Faraón, que hizo banquete a todos sus sirvientes: y alzó la cabeza del jefe de los mayordomos, y la cabeza del jefe de los panaderos, entre sus servidores. ^40:21E hizo volver a su oficio al jefe de los mayordomos; y dio éste la copa en mano de Faraón. ^40:22Pero hizo ahorcar al jefe de los panaderos, como le había interpretado José.

^40:23Y el jefe de los mayordomos no se acordó de José, sino que le olvidó.

¶Único   El jefe de mayordomos le contó a Faraón acerca de José en la prisión quien había interpretado correctamente su sueño (41:1 - 13)

^41:1Y aconteció que pasados dos años tuvo Faraón un sueño: le parecía que estaba junto al río. ^41:2Y que del río subían siete vacas, hermosas a la vista, y muy gordas, y pacían en el prado; ^41:3y que otras siete vacas subían tras ellas del río, de feo aspecto, y enjutas de carne, y se pararon cerca de las vacas hermosas a la orilla del río; ^41:4y que las vacas de feo aspecto y enjutas de carne devoraban a las siete vacas hermosas y muy gordas. Y despertó Faraón.

^41:5Se durmió de nuevo, y soñó la segunda vez, que siete espigas llenas y hermosas subían de una sola caña: ^41:6y que otras siete espigas delgadas y abatidas del viento solano, salían después de ellas: ^41:7y las siete espigas delgadas devoraban a las siete espigas gruesas y llenas. Y despertó Faraón, y he aquí que era sueño.

^41:8Y aconteció que a la mañana estaba agitado su espíritu; y envió e hizo llamar a todos los magos de Egipto, y a todos sus sabios: y les contó Faraón sus sueños, pero no había quien los declarase a Faraón.

^41:9Entonces el principal de los mayordomos habló a Faraón, diciendo, “Me acuerdo hoy de mis faltas: ^41:10Faraón se enojó contra sus siervos, y a mí me echó a la prisión de la casa del capitán de la guardia, a mí y al principal de los panaderos. ^41:11Y él y yo vimos un sueño una misma noche; cada uno soñó conforme a la interpretación de su sueño.

^41:12“Y estaba allí con nosotros un joven hebreo, sirviente del capitán de la guardia; y se lo contamos, y él nos interpretó nuestros sueños, a cada uno conforme a su sueño, él interpretó. ^41:13Y aconteció que como él nos lo interpretó, así sucedió: a mí me hizo volver a mi puesto, e hizo colgar al otro”.

§El complemento   Conclusión: José sabiamente interpretó los sueños de Faraón, y fue nombrado primer ministro de todo Egipto (41:14 - 45a)

¶El complemento   José interpretó los sueños de Faraón y le aconsejó que designara a un hombre para preparar a Egipto para la gran hambruna (41:14 - 36)

^41:14Entonces Faraón envió y llamó a José, y le sacaron aprisa de la cárcel; y se cortó el pelo y cambió su vestidura, y vino a Faraón. ^41:15Y dijo Faraón a José, “Yo he tenido un sueño, y no hay quien lo interprete; pero he oído decir de ti, que oyes sueños para interpretarlos”. ^41:16Y respondió José a Faraón, diciendo, “No está en mí; Dios será el que responda paz a Faraón”.

^41:17Entonces Faraón dijo a José, “En mi sueño me parecía que estaba a la orilla del río; ^41:18y que del río subían siete vacas de gruesas carnes y hermosa apariencia, que pacían en el prado; ^41:19y que otras siete vacas subían después de ellas, flacas y de muy fea traza; tan extenuadas, que no he visto otras semejantes en toda la tierra de Egipto en fealdad; ^41:20y las vacas flacas y feas devoraban a las siete primeras vacas gruesas. ^41:21Y entraban en sus entrañas, pero no se conocía que hubiese entrado en ellas: porque su parecer era aún malo, como de primero. Y yo desperté. ^41:22Y vi también en mi sueño que siete espigas crecían en una misma caña, llenas y hermosas; ^41:23y que otras siete espigas delgadas, marchitas, abatidas del viento solano, subían después de ellas. ^41:24Y las espigas delgadas devoraban a las siete espigas hermosas; y lo he contado a los magos, pero no hay quien me lo interprete”.

^41:25Entonces respondió José a Faraón, “El sueño de Faraón es uno mismo: Dios ha mostrado a Faraón lo que va a hacer. ^41:26Las siete vacas hermosas siete años son; y las espigas hermosas son siete años: el sueño es uno mismo. ^41:27También las siete vacas flacas y feas que subían tras ellas, son siete años; y las siete espigas delgadas y marchitas del viento solano, siete años serán de hambre.

^41:28“Esto es lo que respondo a Faraón. Lo que Dios va a hacer, lo ha mostrado a Faraón. ^41:29He aquí vienen siete años de gran abundancia en toda la tierra de Egipto; ^41:30y se levantarán tras ellos siete años de hambre; y toda la abundancia será olvidada en la tierra de Egipto; y el hambre consumirá la tierra. ^41:31Y aquella abundancia no se echará de ver a causa del hambre siguiente, la cual será gravísima. ^41:32Y el suceder el sueño a Faraón dos veces, significa que la cosa es firme de parte de Dios, y que Dios se apresura a hacerla.

^41:33“Por tanto, provéase ahora Faraón de un varón prudente y sabio, y póngalo sobre la tierra de Egipto. ^41:34Haga esto Faraón, y ponga gobernadores sobre el país, y recaude la quinta parte de la tierra de Egipto en los siete años de la abundancia. ^41:35Y junten toda la provisión de estos buenos años que vienen, y alleguen el trigo bajo la mano de Faraón para mantenimiento de las ciudades; y guárdenlo. ^41:36Y esté aquella provisión en depósito para el país, para los siete años del hambre que serán en la tierra de Egipto; y el país no perecerá de hambre”.

¶El complemento   Faraón aceptó el consejo de José y le hizo su primer ministro sobre todo Egipto (41:37 - 45a)

^41:37Y la idea pareció bien a Faraón, y a sus siervos.

^41:38Y dijo Faraón a sus siervos, “¿Hemos de hallar otro hombre como éste, en quien esté el Espíritu de Dios?”.

^41:39Y dijo Faraón a José, “Pues que Dios te ha hecho saber todo esto, no hay entendido ni sabio como tú. ^41:40Tú serás sobre mi casa, y por tu palabra se gobernará todo mi pueblo: solamente en el trono seré yo mayor que tú”.

^41:41Dijo más Faraón a José, “He aquí yo te he puesto sobre toda la tierra de Egipto”. ^41:42Entonces Faraón quitó el anillo de su mano, y lo puso en la mano de José, y le hizo vestir de ropas de lino finísimo, y puso un collar de oro en su cuello. ^41:43Y lo hizo subir en su segundo carro, y pregonaron delante de él, “¡Doblad la rodilla!”. Y le puso sobre toda la tierra de Egipto.

^41:44Y dijo Faraón a José, “Yo Faraón; y sin ti ninguno alzará su mano ni su pie en toda la tierra de Egipto”. ^41:45Y llamó Faraón el nombre de José, Zafnat-paanea; y le dio por esposa a Asenat, hija de Potifera, sacerdote de On.
