^30:28And he said, “Appoint me your wages, and I will give it.” ^30:29And he said to him, “You know how I have served you, and how your cattle was with me: ^30:30for it was little which you had before I came, and now it has increased to a multitude. And Jehovah has blessed you since my coming; and now when shall I provide for my own household also?” ^30:31And he said, “What shall I give you?” And Jacob said, “You shall not give me anything. But if you will do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep your flock: ^30:32I will pass through all your flock today, removing from there all the speckled and spotted sheep, and all the brown cattle among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats; and of such shall be my wages. ^30:33So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to come, when it shall come for my wages before your face: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the sheep, that shall be considered stolen, if it is with me.”

^30:34And Laban said, “Behold, I would it might be according to your word.” ^30:35And he removed that day the male goats that were streaked and spotted, and all the female goats that were speckled and spotted, and every one that had some white in it, and all the brown among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons. ^30:36And he set three days’ journey between himself and Jacob; and Jacob fed the rest of Laban’s flocks.

^30:37And Jacob took rods of green poplar, and of the hazel and chestnut tree, and peeled white streaks in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods. ^30:38And he set the rods which he had peeled before the flocks in the gutters in the watering troughs when the flocks came to drink, so that they would conceive when they came to drink. ^30:39And the flocks conceived before the rods, and brought forth cattle streaked, speckled, and spotted. ^30:40And Jacob separated the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the streaked, and all the brown in the flock of Laban; and he put his own flocks by themselves, and did not put them with Laban’s cattle. ^30:41And it came to pass, whenever the stronger cattle conceived, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the cattle in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods. ^30:42But when the cattle were feeble, he did not put them in, so the feebler were Laban’s, and the stronger Jacob’s.

^30:43And the man increased exceedingly; and he had many cattle, maidservants, menservants, camels, and donkeys.

^31:1And he heard the words of Laban’s sons, saying, “Jacob has taken away all that was our father’s; and of that which was our father’s has he acquired all this glory.” ^31:2And Jacob beheld the countenance of Laban; and, behold, it was not friendly toward him as before. ^31:3And Jehovah said to Jacob, “Return to the land of your fathers, and to your family; and I will be with you.” ^31:4And Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field to his flock; ^31:5and he said to them, “I see your father’s countenance, that it is not friendly toward me as before, but the God of my father has been with me. ^31:6And you know that with all my power I have served your father. ^31:7And your father has deceived me, and changed my wages ten times, but God did not allow him to hurt me. ^31:8If he said this: ‘The speckled shall be your wages’, then all the cattle bore speckled; and if he said this: ‘The streaked shall be your hire’, then all the cattle bore streaked. ^31:9Thus God has taken away the cattle of your father, and given them to me. ^31:10And it came to pass at the time that the cattle conceived, that I lifted up my eyes, and saw in a dream; and, behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattle were streaked, speckled, and grizzled. ^31:11And the angel of God spoke to me in a dream, saying, ‘Jacob’; and I said, ‘Here I am.’ ^31:12And he said, ‘Lift up your eyes now, and see, all the rams which leap upon the cattle are streaked, speckled, and grizzled: for I have seen all that Laban does to you. ^31:13I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the pillar, and where you vowed a vow to me; now arise, leave this land, and return to the land of your family.’” ^31:14And Rachel and Leah answered and said to him, “Is there still any portion or inheritance for us in our father’s house? ^31:15Are we not counted of him strangers? For he has sold us, and has also completely devoured our money. ^31:16For all the riches which God has taken from our father, that is ours, and our children’s. Now then, whatsoever God has said to you, do.”

^31:17Then Jacob rose up, and set his sons and his wives upon camels; ^31:18and he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had acquired: the cattle of his possession, which he had acquired in Padan-aram, for to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan. ^31:19And Laban went to shear his sheep; but Rachel had stolen the idols that were her father’s. ^31:20And Jacob stole away unawares to Laban the Syrian, in that he did not tell him that he fled. ^31:21So he fled with all that he had; and he rose up, and passed over the river, and set his face toward the mount Gilead. ^31:22And it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob had fled. ^31:23And he took his brethren with him, and pursued after him seven days’ journey; and they overtook him in the mount Gilead. ^31:24And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said to him, “Be careful that you speak not to Jacob either good or bad.”

^31:25Then Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the mountain; and Laban with his brethren camped in the mountain of Gilead. ^31:26And Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done, that you have stolen away unawares to me, and carried away my daughters, as captives taken with the sword? ^31:27Why did you flee away secretly, and steal away from me, and did not tell me, that I might have sent you away with gladness, with songs, with tambourine, and with harp? ^31:28And you have not allowed me to kiss my sons and my daughters? You have now done foolishly in so doing. ^31:29It is in the power of my hand to harm you, but the God of your father spoke to me last night, saying, ‘Be careful that you speak not to Jacob either good or bad.’ ^31:30And now, though you must be gone, because you greatly long after your father’s house, yet why have you stolen my gods?” ^31:31And Jacob answered and said to Laban, “Because I was afraid: for I said, ‘Perhaps you would take your daughters from me by force.’ ^31:32With whomsoever you find your gods, let him not live. Before our brethren discern what is yours with me, and take it to you.” ^31:33For Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them. And Laban went into Jacob’s tent, and into Leah’s tent, and into the two maidservants’ tents, but he did not find them. Then he went out of Leah’s tent, and entered into Rachel’s tent. ^31:34Now Rachel had taken the idols, and put them in the camel’s furniture, and sat upon them. And Laban searched all the tent, but did not find them. ^31:35And she said to her father, “Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before you: for the custom of women is upon me.” And he searched, but did not find the idols.

^31:36And Jacob was furious, and castigated Laban; and Jacob answered and said to Laban, “What is my trespass?! What is my sin, that you have so hotly pursued after me? ^31:37Whereas you have searched all my things, what have you found of all your household belongings? Set it here before my brethren and your brethren, that they may judge between us both. ^31:38These twenty years have I been with you; your ewes and your she goats have not cast their young, and the rams of your flock have I not eaten. ^31:39That which was torn of beasts I did not bring to you: I bore the loss of it; of my hand did you require it, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night. ^31:40Thus I was: in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep departed from my eyes. ^31:41Thus have I been twenty years in your house: I served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your cattle; and you have changed my wages ten times. ^31:42Unless the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely now you would have sent me away empty. God has seen my affliction and the labor of my hands, and rebuked you last night.” ^31:43And Laban answered and said to Jacob, “These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and these cattle are my cattle, and all that you see is mine; and what can I do this day to these my daughters, or to their children which they have born? ^31:44Now therefore come, let us make a covenant, I and you; and let it be for a witness between you and me.” ^31:45And Jacob took a stone, and set it up for a pillar. ^31:46And Jacob said to his brethren, “Gather stones.” And they took stones, and made a heap; and they ate there upon the heap. ^31:47And Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha, but Jacob called it Galeed. ^31:48And Laban said, “This heap is a witness between you and me this day”; therefore its name was called Galeed, ^31:49and Mizpah: for he said, “Jehovah watch between you and me, when we are absent one from another. ^31:50If you shall abuse my daughters, or if you shall take other wives beside my daughters, no man will be with us; see, God is witness between you and me.” ^31:51And Laban said to Jacob, “Behold this heap, and behold this pillar, which I have cast between you and me. ^31:52This heap is witness, and this pillar is witness, that I will not pass over this heap to you; and that you shall not pass over this heap and this pillar to me, for harm. ^31:53The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us.” And Jacob swore by the fear of his father Isaac. ^31:54Then Jacob offered sacrifice upon the mountain, and called his brethren to eat bread; and they ate bread, and stayed all night in the mountain. ^31:55And early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them; and Laban departed, and returned to his place.

^32:1And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him. ^32:2And when Jacob saw them, he said, “This is God’s host.” And he called the name of that place Mahanaim.

^32:3And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother to the land of Seir, the country of Edom; ^32:4and he commanded them, saying, “Thus shall you speak to my lord Esau, ‘Your servant Jacob says this: I have stayed with Laban, and remained there until now; ^32:5and I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, menservants, and maidservants; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in your sight.’” ^32:6And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau. And also he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men with him.” ^32:7Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed. And he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands. ^32:8And he said, “If Esau comes to one company, and attacks it, then the other company which is left shall escape.” ^32:9And Jacob said, “O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Jehovah which said to me, ‘Return to your country, and to your family, and I will deal well with you’, ^32:10I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which you have shown to your servant. For with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I have become two bands. ^32:11Please, deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children. ^32:12And you said, ‘I will surely do you good, and make your seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted for multitude.’” ^32:13And he lodged there that same night. And he took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother: ^32:14two hundred female goats, twenty male goats, two hundred ewes, twenty rams, ^32:15thirty milk camels with their colts, forty cows, ten bulls, twenty female donkeys, and ten foals. ^32:16And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, each herd by themselves, and said to his servants, “Pass over before me, and put a space between each herd.” ^32:17And he commanded the foremost, saying, “When Esau my brother meets you, and asks you, saying, ‘Whose are you? And where are you going? And whose are these before you?’ ^32:18Then you shall say, ‘They are your servant Jacob’s: it is a present sent to my lord Esau; and, behold, he is also behind us.’” ^32:19And so he commanded the second, and the third, and all that followed the herds, saying, “On this manner shall you speak to Esau, when you find him. ^32:20And say moreover, ‘Behold, your servant Jacob is behind us.’” For he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face: perhaps he will accept me.” ^32:21So the present went over before him; and himself lodged that night in the company.

^32:22And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two maidservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok. ^32:23And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over what he had. ^32:24And Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled there with him until the break of day. ^32:25And when he saw that he did not prevail against him, he touched the socket of his hip; and the socket of Jacob’s hip was out of joint, as he wrestled with him. ^32:26And he said, “Let me go, for the day is breaking.” And he said, “I will not let you go, unless you bless me.” ^32:27And he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” ^32:28And he said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince you have power with God and with men, and have prevailed.” ^32:29And Jacob asked him, and said, “Please, tell me your name.” And he said, “Why is it that you ask after my Name?” And he blessed him there. ^32:30And Jacob called the name of the place “Peniel”: for he said, “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.” ^32:31And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh. ^32:32Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank (which is upon the socket of the hip) until this day, because he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip in the sinew that shrank.

^33:1And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked; and, behold, Esau was coming, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children to Leah, and to Rachel, and to the two maidservants. ^33:2And he put the maidservants and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph at the rear. ^33:3And he passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother. ^33:4And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him; and they wept. ^33:5And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children, and said, “Who are those with you?” And he said, “The children which God has graciously given your servant.” ^33:6Then the maidservants came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves. ^33:7And Leah also with her children came near, and bowed themselves; and afterward Joseph and Rachel came near, and they bowed themselves.

^33:8And he said, “What do you mean by all this herd which I met?” And he said, “These are to find grace in the sight of my lord.” ^33:9And Esau said, “I have enough, my brother; keep what you have to yourself.” ^33:10And Jacob said, “No, please; if now I have found grace in your sight, then receive my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen your face, as though I had seen the face of God, and you were pleased with me. ^33:11Please, take my blessing that is brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough.” And he urged him, and he took it.

^33:12And he said, “Let us take our journey; and let us go, and I will go before you.” ^33:13And he said to him, “My lord knows that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young are with me; and if men should overdrive them one day, all the flock will die. ^33:14Please, let my lord pass over before his servant; and I will lead on softly, according as the cattle that are going before me and the children are able to endure, until I come to my lord to Seir.” ^33:15And Esau said, “Let me now leave with you some of the folk that are with me.” And he said, “What need is there? Let me find grace in the sight of my lord.” ^33:16So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir.

^33:17And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built him a house, and made booths for his cattle; therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.

^33:18And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan-aram, and pitched his tent before the city.

^33:19And he bought a parcel of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for one hundred pieces of money.

^33:20And he erected an altar there;

and he called it El-elohe-Israel.

¶Complement   The sons of Jacob slew the men of Shechem to avenge the rape of their sister (34:1 - 31)

^34:1And Dinah, the daughter of Leah, which she bore to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land. ^34:2And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her. ^34:3And his soul was attracted to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young girl, and spoke kindly to the girl. ^34:4And Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, “Get me this girl to be my wife.”

^34:5And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter; now his sons were with his cattle in the field, and Jacob held his peace until they came. ^34:6And Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to commune with him. ^34:7And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it; and the men were grieved, and they were very angry, because he had done foolishness in Israel in lying with Jacob’s daughter, which thing should not be done. ^34:8And Hamor communed with them, saying, “The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter; please give her to him to be his wife. ^34:9And you make marriages with us, and give your daughters to us, and take our daughters to you. ^34:10And you shall dwell with us; and the land shall be before you; live and trade in it, and get possessions in it.” ^34:11And Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, “Let me find grace in your eyes, and what you shall say to me I will give. ^34:12Ask me ever so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as you shall say to me; but give me the young girl to be my wife.” ^34:13And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully (and they said this, because he had defiled Dinah their sister); ^34:14and they said to them, “We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised: for that would be a reproach to us; ^34:15but we will agree to you in this, if you will be as we are, that every male of you be circumcised. ^34:16Then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will live with you, and we will become one people. ^34:17But if you will not give heed to us, to be circumcised, then we will take our daughter; and we will be gone.”

^34:18And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor’s son. ^34:19And the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he delighted in Jacob’s daughter; and he was more honorable than all the household of his father. ^34:20And Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, saying, ^34:21“These men are peaceful with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade in it: for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters. ^34:22Only herein will the men agree to us in order to live with us, to be one people: if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised. ^34:23Shall not their cattle and their wealth and every beast of theirs be ours? Only let us agree to them, and they will dwell with us.” ^34:24And all that went out of the gate of his city gave heed to Hamor and to Shechem his son; and every male was circumcised: all that went out of the gate of his city.

^34:25And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males. ^34:26And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went out. ^34:27The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister. ^34:28They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their donkeys, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field, ^34:29and all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and plundered even all that was in the house.

^34:30And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my household.” ^34:31But they said, “Should he treat our sister like a whore?”

¶Opposite   God commanded Jacob to journey to Bethel and make an altar to Him there (35:1 - 8)

^35:1And God said to Jacob, “Arise; go up to Bethel, and dwell there; and make there an altar to God, that appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.”

^35:2Then Jacob said to his household, and to all that were with him, “Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments. ^35:3And let us arise, and go up to Bethel, and I will make there an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went.” ^35:4And they gave to Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears, and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.

^35:5And they journeyed; and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.

^35:6So Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan: he and all the people that were with him. ^35:7And he built there an altar; and he called the place El-beth-el, because there God appeared to him, when he fled from the face of his brother.

^35:8But Deborah Rebecca’s nurse died, and she was buried beneath Bethel under a terebinth tree; and its name was called Allon-bachuth.

¶Opposite   After meeting with God at Bethel, Jacob suffered the loss of his wife Rachel (35:9 - 21)

^35:9And God appeared to Jacob again, when he came out of Padan-aram, and blessed him. ^35:10And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; your name shall not be called Jacob any longer, but Israel shall be your name”; and he called his name Israel. ^35:11And God said to him, “I am God Almighty; be fruitful and multiply: a nation and a company of nations shall be of you, and kings shall come out of your loins. ^35:12And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, I will give it to you; and to your seed after you will I give the land.”

^35:13And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him. ^35:14And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone; and he poured a drink offering on it, and he poured oil on it. ^35:15And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, Bethel.

^35:16And they journeyed from Bethel, and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath; and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labor. ^35:17And it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said to her, “Fear not; you shall have this son also.”

^35:18And it came to pass, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name Ben-oni, but his father called him Benjamin. ^35:19And Rachel died, and was buried in the road to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem. ^35:20And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave: that is the pillar of Rachel’s grave until this day.

^35:21And Israel journeyed; and he spread his tent beyond the tower of Edar.

^35:22And it came to pass, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine. And Israel heard it.

Now the sons of Jacob were twelve: ^35:23the sons of Leah: Reuben (Jacob’s firstborn), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun; ^35:24the sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin; ^35:25and the sons of Bilhah (Rachel’s maidservant): Dan and Naphtali; ^35:26and the sons of Zilpah (Leah’s maidservant): Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob, which were born to him in Padan-aram.

^35:27And Jacob came to Isaac his father to Mamre, to the city of Arbah (which now is Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac stayed.

^35:28And the days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years.

^35:29And Isaac gave up the spirit, and died; and he was gathered to his people, being old and full of days. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

^36:1Now these are the generations of Esau, who is Edom. ^36:2Esau took his wives of the daughters of Canaan: Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite, ^36:3and Bashemath Ishmael’s daughter, sister of Nebajoth. ^36:4And Adah bore to Esau Eliphaz; and Bashemath bore Reuel; ^36:5and Aholibamah bore Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah; these are the sons of Esau, which were born to him in the land of Canaan. ^36:6And Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, and all the persons of his household; and his cattle, and all his animals, and all his property, which he had acquired in the land of Canaan; and he went into the country from the face of his brother Jacob: ^36:7for their riches were more than that they might live together, and the land in which they were strangers could not support them because of their cattle. ^36:8Thus Esau dwelt in mount Seir; Esau is Edom.

^36:15These were Dukes of the sons of Esau: the sons of Eliphaz the firstborn son of Esau: Duke Teman, Duke Omar, Duke Zepho, Duke Kenaz, ^36:16Duke Korah, Duke Gatam, and Duke Amalek: these are the Dukes that came of Eliphaz in the land of Edom: these were the sons of Adah. ^36:17And these are the sons of Reuel Esau’s son: Duke Nahath, Duke Zerah, Duke Shammah, and Duke Mizzah; these are the Dukes that came of Reuel in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Bashemath Esau’s wife. ^36:18And these are the sons of Aholibamah Esau’s wife: Duke Jeush, Duke Jaalam, and Duke Korah: these were the Dukes that came of Aholibamah the daughter of Anah, Esau’s wife. ^36:19These are the sons of Esau, who is Edom, and these are their Dukes. ^36:20These are the sons of Seir the Horite, who inhabited the land: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, ^36:21Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan; these are the Dukes of the Horites, the children of Seir in the land of Edom. ^36:22And the children of Lotan were Hori and Hemam; and Lotan’s sister was Timna. ^36:23And the children of Shobal were these: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam. ^36:24And these are the children of Zibeon: both Ajah and Anah (this was that Anah that found the mules in the wilderness, as he fed the donkeys of Zibeon his father). ^36:25And the children of Anah were these: Dishon and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah. ^36:26And these are the children of Dishon: Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran. ^36:27The children of Ezer are these: Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan. ^36:28The children of Dishan are these: Uz and Aran. ^36:29These are the Dukes that came of the Horites: Duke Lotan, Duke Shobal, Duke Zibeon, Duke Anah, ^36:30Duke Dishon, Duke Ezer, and Duke Dishan; these are the Dukes that came of Hori, among their Dukes in the land of Seir.

^36:31And these are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom, before there reigned any king over the children of Israel; ^36:32and Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom; and the name of his city was Dinhabah. ^36:33And Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his place. ^36:34And Jobab died, and Husham of the land of Temani reigned in his place. ^36:35And Husham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad, who smote Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his place; and the name of his city was Avith. ^36:36And Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place. ^36:37And Samlah died, and Saul of Rehoboth by the river reigned in his place. ^36:38And Saul died, and Baal-hanan the son of Achbor reigned in his place. ^36:39And Baal-hanan the son of Achbor died, and Hadar reigned in his place; and the name of his city was Pau; and his wife’s name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mezahab.

^30:37Y se tomó Jacob varas de álamo verdes y de avellano, y de castaño, y descortezó en ellas mondaduras blancas, descubriendo así lo blanco de las varas. ^30:38Y puso las varas que había mondado delante de los rebaños, en los canales de los abrevaderos del agua donde venían a beber las ovejas, las cuales concebían cuando venían a beber. ^30:39Y concebían las ovejas delante de las varas, y parían borregos listados, pintados y salpicados de diversos colores. ^30:40Y apartaba Jacob los corderos, y ponía con su rebaño los listados, y todo lo que era oscuro en el hato de Labán. Y ponía su hato aparte, y no lo ponía con las ovejas de Labán. ^30:41Y sucedía que cuando las ovejas más fuertes entraban en celo, Jacob ponía las varas delante de las ovejas en los abrevaderos, para que concibieran a la vista de las varas. ^30:42Y cuando las ovejas eran débiles, no ponía las varas; así las débiles eran para Labán, y las fuertes para Jacob.

^30:43Y se engrandeció el varón muchísimo, y tuvo muchas ovejas, y siervas y siervos, y camellos y asnos.

^31:17Entonces se levantó Jacob, y subió a sus hijos y a sus esposas sobre los camellos. ^31:18Y puso en camino todo su ganado, y todos sus bienes que había adquirido, el ganado de su ganancia que había obtenido en Padan-aram, para volverse a Isaac su padre en la tierra de Canaán. ^31:19Y Labán había ido a trasquilar sus ovejas: y Raquel hurtó los ídolos de su padre. ^31:20Y Jacob engañó a Labán el arameo, al no decirle que se huía. ^31:21Huyó, pues, con todo lo que tenía; y se levantó, y pasó el río, y puso su rostro hacia el monte de Galaad. ^31:22Y al tercer día fue dicho a Labán que Jacob había huido. ^31:23Entonces tomó a sus hermanos consigo, y fue tras él camino de siete días, y le alcanzó en el monte de Galaad. ^31:24Y Dios vino a Labán arameo en sueños aquella noche, y le dijo, “Guárdate que no hables a Jacob descomedidamente”.

^31:25Alcanzó, pues, Labán a Jacob. Y Jacob había fijado su tienda en el monte, y Labán acampó con sus hermanos en el monte de Galaad. ^31:26Y dijo Labán a Jacob, “¿Qué has hecho, que me has engañado, y has traído a mis hijas como cautivas a espada? ^31:27¿Por qué te escondiste para huir, y me hurtaste; y no me lo hiciste saber para que yo te enviara con alegría y con cantares, con tamborín y arpa? ^31:28Y ni siquiera me dejaste besar a mis hijos y a mis hijas. Ahora locamente has hecho. ^31:29Poder hay en mi mano para haceros mal; pero el Dios de vuestro padre me habló anoche diciendo, ‘Ten cuidado de no hablarle a Jacob ni bien ni mal’. ^31:30Y ya que te ibas: porque tenías deseo de la casa de tu padre, ¿por qué me hurtaste mis dioses?”. ^31:31Y Jacob respondió, y dijo a Labán, “Porque tuve miedo; pues dije, ‘que quizás me quitarías por fuerza tus hijas’. ^31:32En quien hallares tus dioses, no viva; delante de nuestros hermanos reconoce lo que yo tuviere tuyo, y llévatelo. Jacob no sabía que Raquel los había hurtado. ^31:33Y entró Labán en la tienda de Jacob, y en la tienda de Lea, y en la tienda de las dos siervas, y no los halló, y salió de la tienda de Lea, y vino a la tienda de Raquel. ^31:34Y tomó Raquel los ídolos, y los puso en una albarda de un camello, y se sentó sobre ellos; y buscó Labán por toda la tienda pero no los halló. ^31:35Y ella dijo a su padre, “No se enoje mi señor: porque no me puedo levantar delante de ti; pues estoy con la costumbre de las mujeres”. Y él buscó, pero no halló los ídolos.

^31:36Entonces Jacob se enojó, y discutió con Labán; y respondió Jacob y dijo a Labán, “¡¿Cuál es mi transgresión?! ¡¿Cuál es mi pecado, para que con tanto ardor hayas venido en mi persecución?! ^31:37Pues que has buscado en todas mis cosas, ¿qué has hallado de todas las alhajas de tu casa? Ponlo aquí delante de mis hermanos y de tus hermanos, y juzguen entre nosotros. ^31:38Estos veinte años he estado contigo: tus ovejas y tus cabras nunca abortaron, ni yo comí carnero de tus ovejas. ^31:39Nunca te traje lo arrebatado por las fieras; yo pagaba el daño; lo hurtado así de día como de noche, de mi mano lo requerías. ^31:40De día me consumía el calor, y de noche la helada, y el sueño huía de mis ojos. ^31:41Así he estado veinte años en tu casa: catorce años te serví por tus dos hijas, y seis años por tu ganado; y has mudado mi salario diez veces. ^31:42Si el Dios de mi padre, el Dios de Abraham, y el temor de Isaac, no fuera conmigo, de cierto me enviarías ahora vacío; pero Dios vio mi aflicción y el trabajo de mis manos, y te reprendió anoche”. ^31:43Y respondió Labán, y dijo a Jacob, “Las hijas son hijas mías, y los hijos, hijos míos son, y las ovejas son mis ovejas, y todo lo que tú ves es mío: ¿y qué puedo yo hacer hoy a estas mis hijas, o a sus hijos que ellas han dado a luz? ^31:44Ven, pues, ahora, hagamos alianza tú y yo; y sea en testimonio entre nosotros dos”. ^31:45Entonces Jacob tomó una piedra, y la levantó por columna. ^31:46Y dijo Jacob a sus hermanos, “Recoged piedras”. Y tomaron piedras e hicieron un majano; y comieron allí sobre aquel majano. ^31:47Y lo llamó Labán Jegar Sahaduta; y lo llamó Jacob Galaad. ^31:48Porque Labán dijo, “Este majano es testigo hoy entre tú y yo”; por eso fue llamado su nombre Galaad, ^31:49y Mizpa, por cuanto dijo, “Atalaye Jehová entre tú y yo, cuando nos hayamos apartado el uno del otro. ^31:50Si afligieres a mis hijas, o si tomares otras esposas además de mis hijas, nadie está con nosotros; mira, Dios es testigo entre tú y yo”. ^31:51Dijo más Labán a Jacob, “He aquí este majano, y he aquí esta columna, que he erigido entre tú y yo. ^31:52Testigo sea este majano, y testigo sea esta columna, que ni yo pasaré contra ti este majano, ni tú pasarás contra mí este majano ni esta columna, para mal. ^31:53El Dios de Abraham, y el Dios de Nacor juzgue entre nosotros, el Dios de sus padres”. Y Jacob juró por el temor de Isaac su padre. ^31:54Entonces Jacob ofreció un sacrificio en el monte y llamó a sus hermanos a comer pan; y comieron pan, y pasaron aquella noche en el monte. ^31:55Y levantándose muy de mañana, Labán besó a sus hijos y a sus hijas, y los bendijo. Luego partió Labán y regresó a su lugar.

^32:1Y Jacob siguió su camino, y le salieron al encuentro ángeles de Dios. ^32:2Y dijo Jacob cuando los vio, “El campamento de Dios es éste”; y llamó el nombre de aquel lugar Mahanaim.

^32:3Y envió Jacob mensajeros delante de sí a Esaú su hermano, a la tierra de Seir, campo de Edom. ^32:4Y les mandó diciendo, “Así diréis a mi señor Esaú, ‘Así dice tu siervo Jacob: Con Labán he morado, y he estado allí hasta ahora; ^32:5y tengo vacas, y asnos, y ovejas, y siervos y siervas; y envío a decirlo a mi señor, por hallar gracia en tus ojos’”. ^32:6Y los mensajeros volvieron a Jacob, diciendo, “Vinimos a tu hermano Esaú, y él también vino a recibirte, y cuatrocientos hombres con él”. ^32:7Entonces Jacob tuvo gran temor, y se angustió; y dividió al pueblo que tenía consigo en dos campamentos, y las ovejas y las vacas y los camellos; ^32:8y dijo, “Si viniere Esaú contra un campamento y lo hiriere, el otro campamento escapará”. ^32:9Y dijo Jacob, “Dios de mi padre Abraham, y Dios de mi padre Isaac, Jehová, que me dijiste, ‘Vuélvete a tu tierra y a tu parentela, y yo te haré bien’, ^32:10no soy digno de la más pequeña de todas las misericordias, y de toda la verdad que has usado para con tu siervo; que con mi bordón pasé este Jordán, y ahora estoy sobre dos campamentos. ^32:11Líbrame ahora de la mano de mi hermano, de la mano de Esaú: porque le temo; no venga quizá, y me hiera a mí, y a la madre con los hijos. ^32:12Y tú has dicho, “Ciertamente yo te haré bien, y pondré tu simiente como la arena del mar, que no se puede contar por la multitud”. ^32:13Y durmió allí aquella noche, y tomó de lo que le vino a la mano un presente para su hermano Esaú: ^32:14doscientas cabras y veinte machos cabríos, doscientas ovejas y veinte carneros, ^32:15treinta camellas paridas, con sus crías, cuarenta vacas y diez novillos, veinte asnas y diez borricos. ^32:16Y lo entregó en mano de sus siervos, cada manada de por sí; y dijo a sus siervos, “Pasad delante de mí, y poned espacio entre manada y manada”. ^32:17Y mandó al primero, diciendo, “Si Esaú mi hermano te encontrare, y te preguntare, diciendo, ‘¿De quién eres? ¿Y adónde vas? ¿Y para quién es esto que llevas delante de ti?’ ^32:18Entonces dirás, ‘Presente es de tu siervo Jacob, que envía a mi señor Esaú; y he aquí también él viene tras nosotros’”. ^32:19Y mandó también al segundo, y al tercero, y a todos los que iban tras aquellas manadas, diciendo, “Conforme a esto hablaréis a Esaú, cuando le hallareis. ^32:20Y diréis también, ‘He aquí tu siervo Jacob viene tras nosotros’”. Porque dijo, “Apaciguaré su ira con el presente que va delante de mí, y después veré su rostro; quizá le seré acepto”. ^32:21Y pasó el presente delante de él; y él durmió aquella noche en el campamento.

^32:22Y se levantó aquella noche, y tomó sus dos esposas, y sus dos siervas, y sus once hijos, y pasó el vado de Jaboc. ^32:23Los tomó, pues, y los hizo pasar el arroyo, e hizo pasar lo que tenía. ^32:24Y Jacob se quedó solo; y luchó con él un varón hasta que rayaba el alba. ^32:25Y cuando vio que no podía con él, tocó en el sitio del encaje de su muslo, y se descoyuntó el muslo de Jacob mientras con él luchaba. ^32:26Y dijo, “Déjame, que raya el alba”. Y él dijo, “No te dejaré, si no me bendices”. ^32:27Y él le dijo, “¿Cuál es tu nombre?”. Y él respondió, “Jacob”. ^32:28Y él dijo, “No se dirá más tu nombre Jacob, sino Israel: porque como príncipe has luchado con Dios y con los hombres, y has vencido”. ^32:29Entonces Jacob le preguntó, y dijo, “Declárame ahora tu nombre”. Y él respondió, “¿Por qué preguntas por mi Nombre?”. Y lo bendijo allí. ^32:30Y llamó Jacob el nombre de aquel lugar Peniel: porque dijo, “Vi a Dios cara a cara, y fue librada mi alma”. ^32:31Y le salió el sol pasado que hubo a Peniel; y cojeaba de su cadera. ^32:32Por esto no comen los hijos de Israel, hasta hoy día, del tendón que se contrajo, el cual está en el encaje del muslo: porque tocó a Jacob este sitio de su muslo en el tendón que se contrajo.

^33:1Y alzando Jacob sus ojos miró, y he aquí venía Esaú, y los cuatrocientos hombres con él; entonces repartió él los niños entre Lea y Raquel y las dos siervas. ^33:2Y puso las siervas y sus niños delante; luego a Lea y a sus niños; y a Raquel y a José los postreros. ^33:3Y él pasó delante de ellos, y se inclinó a tierra siete veces, hasta que llegó a su hermano. ^33:4Y Esaú corrió a su encuentro, y le abrazó, y se echó sobre su cuello, y le besó; y lloraron. ^33:5Y alzó sus ojos, y vio las mujeres y los niños, y dijo, “¿Quiénes son éstos?”. Y él respondió, “Son los niños que Dios ha dado a tu siervo”. ^33:6Y luego se acercaron las siervas, ellas y sus niños, y se inclinaron. ^33:7Y Lea también se acercó con sus niños, y se inclinaron; y después llegó José y Raquel, y también se inclinaron.

^33:8Y él dijo, “¿Qué te propones con todas estas cuadrillas que he encontrado?”. Y él respondió, “El hallar gracia en los ojos de mi señor”. ^33:9Y dijo Esaú, “Suficiente tengo yo, hermano mío; sea para ti lo que es tuyo”. ^33:10Y dijo Jacob, “No, yo te ruego, si he hallado ahora gracia en tus ojos, toma mi presente de mi mano, pues que he visto tu rostro, como si hubiera visto el rostro de Dios; y te has contentado conmigo. ^33:11Acepta, te ruego, mi bendición que te es traída: porque Dios me ha favorecido, y porque tengo lo suficiente”. Y porfió con él, y la tomó.

^33:12Y dijo, “Anda, y vamos; y yo iré delante de ti”. ^33:13Y él le dijo, “Mi señor sabe que los niños son tiernos, y que tengo ovejas y vacas paridas; y si las fatigan, en un día morirán todas las ovejas. ^33:14Pase ahora mi señor delante de su siervo, y yo me iré poco a poco al paso del ganado que va delante de mí, y al paso de los niños, hasta que llegue a mi señor a Seir”. ^33:15Y Esaú dijo, “Permíteme ahora dejar contigo algunos de los que vienen conmigo”. Y él dijo, “¿Para qué esto? Halle yo gracia en los ojos de mi señor”. ^33:16Así volvió Esaú aquel día por su camino a Seir.

¶El complemento   Jacob hizo una casa fuera de la ciudad de Siquem, con la intención de permanecer allí (33:17 - 20)

^33:17Y Jacob se fue a Sucot, y edificó allí casa para sí, e hizo cabañas para su ganado; por tanto, llamó el nombre de aquel lugar Sucot.

^33:18Y Jacob vino a la ciudad de Siquem, que está en la tierra de Canaán, cuando venía de Padan-aram; y acampó delante de la ciudad.

^33:19Y compró una parte del campo, donde tendió su tienda, de mano de los hijos de Hamor, padre de Siquem, por cien monedas.

^33:20Y erigió allí un altar;

y lo llamó “Dios, el Dios de Israel”.
