^20:3But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, “Behold, you are but a dead man because of the woman that you have taken: for she is a man’s wife.”

^20:4But Abimelech had not come near her, and he said, “Lord, will you also slay a righteous nation? ^20:5Did he not say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she, even she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ In the integrity of my heart and innocence of my hands have I done this.” ^20:6And God said to him in a dream, “Yes, I know that you did this in the integrity of your heart, because I also withheld you from sinning against me; therefore I did not allow you to touch her. ^20:7Now therefore restore to the man his wife: for he is a Prophet; and he shall pray for you, and you shall live. And if you do not restore her, know that you shall surely die: you and all that are yours.”

^20:8Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears;

and the men were very afraid.

¶Opposite   King Abimelech restored Sarah to Abraham with a gift of silver (20:9 - 18)

^20:9Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said to him, “What have you done to us? And what have I offended you, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? You have done things to me that should not be done.”

^20:10And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What did you see, that you have done this thing?” ^20:11And Abraham said, “Because I thought, ‘Surely the fear of God is not in this place, and they will slay me for my wife’s sake.’ ^20:12And yet in truth she is my sister: she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife. ^20:13And it came to pass when God caused me to wander from my father’s house, that I said to her, ‘This is your kindness that you shall show to me: at every place where we shall come, say of me: ‘He is my brother.’’”

^20:14And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and maidservants, and gave them to Abraham, and restored to him Sarah his wife. ^20:15And Abimelech said, “Behold, my land is before you; live where it pleases you.”

^20:16And he said to Sarah, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver. Behold, he is to you a covering of the eyes, to all that are with you, and with all others.” Thus she was reproved.

^20:17So Abraham prayed to God; and God healed Abimelech, his wife, and his maidservants; and they bore children: ^20:18for Jehovah had completely closed up all the wombs of the household of Abimelech, because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.

^21:1And Jehovah visited Sarah as he had said, and Jehovah did to Sarah as he had spoken: ^21:2for Sarah conceived, and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. ^21:3And Abraham called the name of his son that was born to him, whom Sarah bore to him, “Isaac.” ^21:4And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded him. ^21:5And Abraham was one hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born to him. ^21:6And Sarah said, “God has made me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me.” ^21:7And she said, “Who would have said to Abraham, that Sarah would nurse children? For I have born him a son in his old age.”

^21:8And the child grew, and was weaned; and Abraham made a great feast the day that Isaac was weaned. ^21:9And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born to Abraham, laughing. ^21:10Therefore she said to Abraham, “Cast out this maidservant and her son! For the son of this maidservant shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.” ^21:11And the thing was very grievous in Abraham’s sight because of his son. ^21:12And God said to Abraham, “Let it not be grievous in your sight because of the boy, and because of your maidservant; in all that Sarah has said to you, obey her voice: for in Isaac shall your seed be called. ^21:13And also of the son of the maidservant will I make a nation, because he is your seed.”

^21:14And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a skin of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away. And she departed; and wandered in the wilderness of Beer-sheba.

^21:15And the water in the skin was gone; and she cast the child under one of the shrubs. ^21:16And she went, and sat down a good way off from him, about a bowshot: for she said, “Let me not see the death of the child.” And she sat over against him, and lifted up her voice, and wept. ^21:17And God heard the voice of the boy; and the angel of God called Hagar out of Heaven, and said to her, “What troubles you, Hagar? Fear not: for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is. ^21:18Arise; lift up the boy, and hold him in your hand: for I will make him a great nation.”

^21:19And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the skin with water, and gave the boy drink. ^21:20And God was with the boy; and he grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer. ^21:21And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.

¶Complement   God protected Isaac from the Philistines by leading them to make a covenant with Abraham (21:22 - 34)

^21:22And it came to pass at that time, that Abimelech and Phichol the chief captain of his army spoke to Abraham, saying, “God is with you in all that you do. ^21:23Now therefore swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my grandson; but according to the kindness that I have done to you, you shall do to me, and to the land in which you have visited.” ^21:24And Abraham said, “I will swear.”

^21:25And Abraham rebuked Abimelech because of a well of water, which Abimelech’s servants had violently taken away. ^21:26And Abimelech said, “I do not know who has done this thing; neither did you tell me; neither yet did I hear of it, but today.” ^21:27And Abraham took sheep and oxen, and gave them to Abimelech. And both of them made a covenant.

^21:28And Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves. ^21:29And Abimelech said to Abraham, “What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs which you have set by themselves?” ^21:30And he said, “Because you shall take these seven ewe lambs of my hand, that they may be a witness for me that I have dug this well.” ^21:31Therefore he called that place Beer-sheba, because there they swore, both of them. ^21:32Thus they made a covenant at Beer-sheba.

Then Abimelech rose up, and Phichol the chief captain of his army; and they returned into the land of the Philistines.

^21:33And Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beer-sheba; and he called there on the Name of Jehovah, the Everlasting God. ^21:34And Abraham stayed in the Philistines’ land many days.

¶Complement   God protected the life of Isaac during a test of the faith of Abraham (22:1 - 14)

^22:1And it came to pass after these things, that God tested Abraham. And he said to him, “Abraham.” And he said, “Behold, I am here.” ^22:2And he said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains that I will tell you of.” ^22:3And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his donkey; and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering; and he rose up; and went to the place of which God had told him.

^22:4Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place far away. ^22:5And Abraham said to his young men, “You wait here with the donkey; and the boy and I will go over there and worship; and come again to you.” ^22:6And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together. ^22:7And Isaac spoke to Abraham his father, and said, “My father”; and he said, “Here I am, my son.” And he said, “Behold the fire and the wood; but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” ^22:8And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering.”

^22:9So they went both of them together; and they came to the place that God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. ^22:10And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. ^22:11And the angel of Jehovah called to him out of Heaven, and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” ^22:12And he said, “Lay not your hand upon the boy; neither do anything to him: for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son from me.”

^22:13And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked; and behold, behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the place of his son.

^22:14And Abraham called the name of that place “Jehovah-jireh”: as it is said to this day, “In the mountain of Jehovah it shall be seen.”

^22:15And the angel of Jehovah called to Abraham out of Heaven the second time; ^22:16and he said, “‘I have sworn by myself’, says Jehovah; ‘for because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son, ^22:17that in blessing I will bless you, and in multiplying I will multiply your seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the seashore.

“And your Seed shall possess the gate of his enemies.

^22:18“And in your Seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.’”

^22:19So Abraham returned to his young men; and they rose up and went together to Beer-sheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beer-sheba.

^22:20And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, “Behold, Milcah, she has also born children to your brother Nahor: ^22:21Huz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel (the father of Aram), ^22:22Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel; ^22:23and Bethuel begot Rebecca.” These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham’s brother. ^22:24And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she bore also Tebah, Gaham, Thahash, and Maachah.

¶Opposite   Abraham bargained with Ephron the Hittite for a burial place for Sarah his wife (23:1 - 20)

^23:1And Sarah was one hundred and twenty-seven years old: these were the years of the life of Sarah.

^23:2And Sarah died in Kirjath-arba: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan.

And Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her. ^23:3And Abraham stood up from before his dead, and spoke to the sons of Heth, saying, ^23:4“I am a stranger and a visitor with you; give me a possession of a burial place with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.” ^23:5And the children of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him, ^23:6“Hear us, my lord: you are a mighty prince among us. In the best of our graves bury your dead; none of us shall withhold his grave from you, so that you may bury your dead.” ^23:7And Abraham stood up, and bowed himself to the people of the land, even to the children of Heth; ^23:8and he communed with them, saying, “If it is your mind that I should bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and intercede for me to Ephron the son of Zohar, ^23:9that he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he has, which is in the end of his field. For as much money as it is worth he shall give it to me for a possession of a burial place among you.”

^23:10And Ephron dwelt among the children of Heth; and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the audience of the children of Heth, even of all that went in at the gate of his city, saying, ^23:11“No, my lord, hear me: I give you the field; and the cave that is in it, I give it to you. In the presence of the sons of my people I give it to you; bury your dead.” ^23:12And Abraham bowed himself down before the people of the land. ^23:13And he spoke to Ephron in the audience of the people of the land, saying, “But if you will, please hear me: I will give you money for the field; take it of me, and I will bury my dead there.” ^23:14And Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him, ^23:15“My lord, listen to me: the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver; what is that between you and me? Therefore bury your dead.” ^23:16And Abraham gave heed to Ephron, and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver, which he had named in the audience of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, current money with the merchant. ^23:17And the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre: the field, and the cave which was in it, and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all the borders round about, were made sure ^23:18to Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth, before all that went in at the gate of his city.

^23:19And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan. ^23:20And the field, and the cave that is in it, were made sure to Abraham for a possession of a burial place by the sons of Heth.

^24:1And Abraham was old and well advanced in age; and Jehovah had blessed Abraham in all things. ^24:2And Abraham said to his oldest servant of his household that ruled over all that he had, “Please, put your hand under my thigh; ^24:3and I will make you swear by Jehovah (the God of Heaven and the God of the earth), that you will not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live. ^24:4But you shall go to my country, and to my relatives; and take a wife to my son Isaac.” ^24:5And the servant said to him, “Perhaps the woman will not be willing to follow me to this land; must I bring your son again to the land where you came from?” ^24:6And Abraham said to him, “Beware that you do not bring my son there again. ^24:7Jehovah, the God of Heaven, which took me from my father’s household, and from the land of my relatives, and who spoke to me, and that swore to me, saying, ‘This land will I give to your seed’: he shall send his angel before you; and you shall take a wife to my son from there. ^24:8And if the woman will not be willing to follow you, then you shall be clear from this my oath; only do not bring my son there again.” ^24:9And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning that matter.

^24:10And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed: for all the goods of his master were in his hand; and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor. ^24:11And he made his camels to kneel down outside the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, the time that women go out to draw water. ^24:12And he said, “O Jehovah, God of my master Abraham, please send me good speed this day, and show kindness to my master Abraham. ^24:13Behold, I stand here by the well of water, and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water. ^24:14Now let it come to pass, that the young woman to whom I shall say, ‘Please, let down your pitcher, that I may drink’, and she shall say, ‘Drink, and I will give your camels drink also’: let the same be she that you have appointed for your servant Isaac; and thereby I shall know that you have shown kindness to my master.” ^24:15And it came to pass, before he had finished speaking, that, behold, Rebecca came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder. ^24:16And the girl was very beautiful to look upon, a virgin: no man had known her; and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up. ^24:17And the servant ran to meet her, and said, “Please, let me drink a little water of your pitcher.” ^24:18And she said, “Drink, my lord.” And she hurried, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him a drink. ^24:19And when she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I will draw water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking.” ^24:20And she hurried, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again to the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels. ^24:21And the man wondering at her held his peace: to know whether Jehovah had made his journey prosperous or not. ^24:22And it came to pass, after the camels had finished drinking, that the man took a golden earring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold, ^24:23and said, “Whose daughter are you? Please tell me, is there room in your father’s house for us to lodge in?” ^24:24And she said to him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, which she bore to Nahor.” ^24:25She said moreover to him, “We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in.” ^24:26And the man bowed down his head, and worshipped Jehovah; ^24:27and he said, “Blessed is Jehovah, the God of my master Abraham, who has not left my master destitute of his mercy and his truth. I being in the Way, Jehovah led me to the house of my master’s brethren.”

^24:28And the girl ran, and told them of her mother’s house these things. ^24:29And Rebecca had a brother, and his name was Laban; and Laban ran out to the man, to the well. ^24:30And it came to pass, when he saw the earring and bracelets upon his sister’s hands, and when he heard the words of Rebecca his sister, saying, “Thus spoke the man to me”, that he came to the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the well. ^24:31And he said, “Come in, you blessed of Jehovah. Why do you stand outside? For I have prepared the house, and room for the camels.” ^24:32And the man came into the house, and he ungirded his camels, and gave straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the men’s feet that were with him. ^24:33And there was set food before him to eat, but he said, “I will not eat, until I have told my errand.” And he said, “Speak on.” ^24:34And he said, “I am Abraham’s servant. ^24:35And Jehovah has blessed my master greatly; and he has become great. And he has given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and womenservants, and camels, and donkeys. ^24:36And Sarah my master’s wife bore a son to my master when she was old; and he has given him all that he has. ^24:37And my master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live, ^24:38but you shall go to my father’s house, and to my relatives, and take a wife to my son.’ ^24:39And I said to my master, ‘It may be that the woman will not follow me.’ ^24:40And he said to me, ‘Jehovah, before whom I walk, will send his angel with you, and prosper your way. And you shall take a wife for my son of my relatives, and of my father’s household. ^24:41Then you shall be clear from this my oath, when you have come to my relatives. And if they do not give you one, you shall be clear from my oath.’ ^24:42And I came this day to the well, and said, ‘O Jehovah, God of my master Abraham, if now you are prospering my way that I go, ^24:43behold, I stand by the well of water; and if it shall come to pass, that when the virgin comes forth to draw water, and I say to her, ‘Please give me a little water of your pitcher to drink’, ^24:44and she says to me, ‘Both drink yourself, and I will also draw for your camels’, let the same be the woman whom Jehovah has appointed out for my master’s son.’ ^24:45And before I had finished speaking in my heart, behold, Rebecca came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down to the well, and drew water; and I said to her, ‘Please, let me drink.’ ^24:46And she hurried, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, ‘Drink, and I will give your camels drink also’, so I drank, and she made the camels drink also. ^24:47And I asked her, and said, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ And she said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bore to him.’ And I put the earring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands. ^24:48And I bowed down my head, and worshipped Jehovah, and blessed Jehovah, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me in the right way to take my master’s brother’s daughter to his son. ^24:49And now if you will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.” ^24:50Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, “The thing proceeds from Jehovah. We cannot speak to you either bad or good. ^24:51Behold, Rebecca is before you: take her, and go, and let her be your master’s son’s wife, as Jehovah has spoken.” ^24:52And it came to pass, that when Abraham’s servant heard their words, he worshipped Jehovah, bowing himself to the earth. ^24:53And the servant brought forth jewelry of silver, and jewelry of gold, and clothing, and gave them to Rebecca; he also gave precious things to her brother and to her mother. ^24:54And they ate and drank, he and the men that were with him, and stayed all night.

And they rose up in the morning, and he said, “Send me away to my master.” ^24:55And her brother and her mother said, “Let the girl stay with us a few days, or at the least ten; and after that she shall go.” ^24:56And he said to them, “Hinder me not, seeing Jehovah has prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master.” ^24:57And they said, “We will call the girl, and ask at her mouth.” ^24:58And they called Rebecca, and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” And she said, “I will go.” ^24:59And they sent away Rebecca their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham’s servant, and his men. ^24:60And they blessed Rebecca, and said to her, “You are our sister; be the mother of thousands of millions, and let your seed possess the gate of those that hate them.” ^24:61And Rebecca arose, and her young servant girls, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man. And the servant took Rebecca, and went his way.

^24:62And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahai-roi, for he dwelt in the south country. ^24:63And Isaac went out to meditate in the field in the evening, and he lifted up his eyes, and saw; and behold, the camels were coming. ^24:64And Rebecca lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she dismounted from the camel: ^24:65for she said to the servant, “What man is this that walks in the field to meet us?” ^24:66And the servant said, “It is my master.” Therefore she took a veil and covered herself. ^24:67And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done. And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent, and took Rebecca, and she became his wife; and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

¶Complement   Abraham and Ishmael died, but Isaac remained (25:1 - 18)

^25:1Then Abraham again took a wife, and her name was Keturah. ^25:2And she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. ^25:3And Jokshan begot Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim. ^25:4And the sons of Midian: Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abidah, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah. ^25:5And Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac. ^25:6But to the sons of the concubines, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son, while he still lived, eastward, to the east country. ^25:7And these  are the days of the years of Abraham’s life that he lived: one hundred and seventy-five years. ^25:8Then Abraham gave up the spirit, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and he was gathered to his people. ^25:9And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre: ^25:10the field which Abraham purchased of the sons of Heth; there Abraham was buried, and Sarah his wife.

^25:11And it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac dwelt by the well Lahai-roi.

^25:12Now these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s maidservant, bore to Abraham.

^25:13And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: Nebajoth the firstborn of Ishmael, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,^25:14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa, ^25:15Hadar, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. ^25:16These are the sons of Ishmael; and these are their names, by their towns, and by their castles: twelve princes according to their nations.

^25:17And these are the years of the life of Ishmael: one hundred and thirty-seven years. And he gave up the spirit and died, and was gathered to his people. ^25:18And they dwelt from Havilah to Shur, that is before Egypt, as you go toward Assyria. And he died in the presence of all his brethren.

^20:4Pero Abimelec no se había llegado a ella, y dijo, “Señor, ¿matarás también la gente justa? ^20:5¿No me dijo él, ‘Ella es mi hermana’?; y ella también dijo, ‘Es mi hermano’. Con sencillez de mi corazón, y con limpieza de mis manos he hecho esto”. ^20:6Y le dijo Dios en sueños, “Sí, sé que usted hizo esto en la integridad de su corazón; y yo también te detuve de pecar contra mí, y así no te permití que la tocases. ^20:7Ahora, pues, devuélvele su esposa a este hombre: porque él es Profeta, y orará por ti, y vivirás. Y si tú no la devolvieres, sabe que de cierto morirás, con todo lo que fuere tuyo”.

^20:8Entonces Abimelec se levantó de mañana, y llamó a todos sus siervos, y dijo todas estas palabras en los oídos de ellos;

y temieron los hombres en gran manera.

^20:10Y dijo más Abimelec a Abraham, “¿Qué viste para que hicieses esto?”. ^20:11Y Abraham respondió, “Porque dije para mí, ‘Cierto no hay temor de Dios en este lugar, y me matarán por causa de mi esposa’. ^20:12Y a la verdad también es mi hermana, hija de mi padre, pero no hija de mi madre, y la tomé por esposa. ^20:13Y fue que, cuando Dios me hizo salir errante de la casa de mi padre, yo le dije, ‘Ésta es la merced que tú me harás, que en todos los lugares adonde lleguemos, digas de mí, ‘Él es mi hermano’’”.

^20:14Entonces Abimelec tomó ovejas y vacas, y siervos y siervas, y lo dio a Abraham, y le devolvió a Sara su esposa. ^20:15Y dijo Abimelec, “He aquí mi tierra está delante de ti; habita donde bien te pareciere”.

^21:1Y visitó Jehová a Sara, como había dicho, e hizo Jehová con Sara como había hablado. ^21:2Y Sara concibió y dio a luz un hijo a Abraham en su vejez, en el tiempo que Dios le había dicho. ^21:3Y llamó Abraham el nombre de su hijo que le nació, que le dio a luz Sara, “Isaac”. ^21:4Y circuncidó Abraham a su hijo Isaac de ocho días, como Dios le había mandado. ^21:5Y era Abraham de cien años, cuando le nació Isaac su hijo. ^21:6Entonces dijo Sara, “Dios me ha hecho reír, y cualquiera que lo oyere, se reirá conmigo”. ^21:7Y añadió, “¿Quién dijera a Abraham que Sara había de dar de mamar a hijos? Pues que le he dado un hijo en su vejez”.

^21:8Y creció el niño, y fue destetado; e hizo Abraham gran banquete el día que fue destetado Isaac. ^21:9Y vio Sara al hijo de Agar la egipcia, el cual ésta le había dado a luz a Abraham, que se burlaba. ^21:10Por tanto dijo a Abraham, “¡Echa a esta sierva y a su hijo! Pues el hijo de esta sierva no ha de heredar con mi hijo, con Isaac”. ^21:11Este dicho pareció grave en gran manera a Abraham a causa de su hijo. ^21:12Entonces dijo Dios a Abraham, “No te parezca grave a causa del muchacho y de tu sierva; en todo lo que te dijere Sara, oye su voz: porque en Isaac te será llamada descendencia. ^21:13Y también del hijo de la sierva haré una nación: porque es tu simiente”.

^21:14Entonces Abraham se levantó muy de mañana, y tomó pan, y un odre de agua, y lo dio a Agar, poniéndolo sobre su hombro, y le entregó el muchacho, y la despidió. Y ella partió, y andaba errante por el desierto de Beerseba.

^21:15Y faltó el agua del odre, y echó al muchacho debajo de un árbol; ^21:16y se fue y se sentó enfrente, alejándose como a un tiro de arco: porque decía, “No veré cuando el muchacho morirá”. Y se sentó enfrente, y alzó su voz y lloró. ^21:17Y oyó Dios la voz del muchacho; y el Ángel de Dios llamó a Agar desde el Cielo, y le dijo, “¿Qué tienes, Agar? No temas: porque Dios ha oído la voz del muchacho en donde está. ^21:18Levántate, alza al muchacho, y tómalo en tus manos: porque haré de él una gran nación”.

^21:19Entonces abrió Dios sus ojos, y vio una fuente de agua; y fue, y llenó el odre de agua, y dio de beber al muchacho. ^21:20Y Dios fue con el muchacho; y creció, y habitó en el desierto, y fue tirador de arco. ^21:21Y habitó en el desierto de Parán; y su madre le tomó esposa de la tierra de Egipto.

^21:22Y aconteció en aquel mismo tiempo que habló Abimelec, y Ficol, príncipe de su ejército, a Abraham diciendo, “Dios es contigo en todo cuanto haces. ^21:23Ahora pues, júrame aquí por Dios, que no faltarás a mí, ni a mi hijo, ni a mi nieto; sino que conforme a la bondad que yo hice contigo, harás tú conmigo y con la tierra donde has peregrinado”. ^21:24Y respondió Abraham, “Yo juraré”.

^21:25Y Abraham reconvino a Abimelec a causa de un pozo de agua, que los siervos de Abimelec le habían quitado. ^21:26Y respondió Abimelec, “No sé quién haya hecho esto, ni tampoco tú me lo hiciste saber, ni yo lo he oído hasta hoy”. ^21:27Y tomó Abraham ovejas y vacas, y dio a Abimelec; e hicieron ambos alianza.

^21:28Y puso Abraham siete corderas del rebaño aparte. ^21:29Y dijo Abimelec a Abraham, “¿Qué significan esas siete corderas que has puesto aparte?”. ^21:30Y él respondió, “Que estas siete corderas tomarás de mi mano, para que me sean en testimonio de que yo cavé este pozo”. ^21:31Por esto llamó a aquel lugar Beerseba: porque allí juraron ambos. ^21:32Así hicieron alianza en Beerseba.

Y se levantó Abimelec y Ficol, príncipe de su ejército, y se volvieron a tierra de los filisteos.

^21:33Y plantó Abraham un bosque en Beerseba, e invocó allí el Nombre de Jehová, el Dios eterno. ^21:34Y moró Abraham en tierra de los filisteos muchos días.

¶El complemento   Dios protegió la vida de Isaac durante una prueba de la fe de Abraham (22:1 - 14)

^22:1Y aconteció después de estas cosas, que probó Dios a Abraham, y le dijo, “Abraham”. Y él respondió, “Heme aquí”. ^22:2Y dijo, “Toma ahora tu hijo, tu único, Isaac, a quien amas, y vete a tierra de Moriah, y ofrécelo allí en holocausto sobre uno de los montes que yo te diré”. ^22:3Y Abraham se levantó muy de mañana, y enalbardó su asno, y tomó consigo dos mozos suyos, y a Isaac su hijo: y cortó leña para el holocausto, y se levantó, y fue al lugar que Dios le dijo.

^22:4Al tercer día alzó Abraham sus ojos, y vio el lugar de lejos. ^22:5Entonces dijo Abraham a sus siervos, “Esperaos aquí con el asno, y yo y el muchacho iremos hasta allí, y adoraremos, y volveremos a ustedes”. ^22:6Y tomó Abraham la leña del holocausto, y la puso sobre Isaac su hijo: y él tomó en su mano el fuego y el cuchillo; y fueron ambos juntos. ^22:7Entonces habló Isaac a Abraham su padre, y dijo, “Padre mío”. Y él respondió, “Heme aquí, mi hijo”. Y él dijo, “He aquí el fuego y la leña. ¿Pero dónde está el cordero para el holocausto?”. ^22:8Y respondió Abraham, “Dios se proveerá él mismo el cordero para el holocausto, hijo mío”. E iban juntos.

^22:9Y cuando llegaron al lugar que Dios le había dicho, edificó allí Abraham un altar, y compuso la leña, y ató a Isaac su hijo, y le puso en el altar sobre la leña. ^22:10Y extendió Abraham su mano, y tomó el cuchillo, para degollar a su hijo. ^22:11Entonces el Ángel de Jehová le dio voces desde el Cielo, y dijo, “¡Abraham, Abraham!”. Y él respondió, “Heme aquí”. ^22:12Y dijo, “No extiendas tu mano sobre el muchacho, ni le hagas nada; que ya conozco que temes a Dios, pues que no me rehusaste tu hijo, tu único”.

^22:13Entonces alzó Abraham sus ojos, y miró, y he aquí un carnero a sus espaldas trabado en un zarzal por sus cuernos; y fue Abraham, y tomó el carnero, y le ofreció en holocausto en lugar de su hijo.

^22:14Y llamó Abraham el nombre de aquel lugar, “Jehová proveerá”: por tanto se dice hoy, “En el monte de Jehová será provisto”.

¶Lo opuesto   Jehová prometió bendecir a Abrahán y su Simiente porque él obedeció su voz (22:15 - 22:24)

^22:15Y el Ángel de Jehová llamó a Abraham por segunda vez desde el Cielo, ^22:16y dijo, “‘Por mí mismo he jurado,’ dice Jehová, ‘que por cuanto has hecho esto, y no me has rehusado tu hijo, tu único; ^22:17bendiciendo te bendeciré, y multiplicando multiplicaré tu simiente como las estrellas del cielo, y como la arena que está a la orilla del mar.

“Y tu simiente poseerá las puertas de sus enemigos.

^22:18“Y en tu simiente serán benditas todas las naciones de la tierra, por cuanto obedeciste a mi voz’”.

^22:19Y volvió Abraham a sus siervos; y se levantaron y se fueron juntos a Beerseba; y habitó Abraham en Beerseba.

^22:20Y aconteció después de estas cosas, que fue dada nueva a Abraham, diciendo, “He aquí que también Milca ha dado a luz hijos a Nacor tu hermano: ^22:21a Uz su primogénito, y a Buz su hermano, y a Quemuel padre de Aram, ^22:22y a Quesed, y a Hazo, y a Pildas, y a Jidlaf, y a Betuel; ^22:23y Betuel engendró a Rebeca”. Estos ocho hijos dio a luz Milca a Nacor, hermano de Abraham. ^22:24Y su concubina, que se llamaba Reúma, dio a luz también a Teba, a Gaham, a Tahas y a Maaca”.

^23:1Y fue la vida de Sara ciento veintisiete años; tantos fueron los años de la vida de Sara.

^23:2Y murió Sara en Quiriat-arba, que es Hebrón, en la tierra de Canaán.

Y vino Abraham a hacer duelo a Sara y a llorarla. ^23:3Y se levantó Abraham de delante de su muerta, y habló a los hijos de Het, diciendo: ^23:4“Peregrino y advenedizo soy entre ustedes; dadme heredad de sepultura con ustedes, y sepultaré mi muerta de delante de mí”. ^23:5Y respondieron los hijos de Het a Abraham, y le dijeron: ^23:6“Escúchanos, señor mío, eres un príncipe de Dios entre nosotros; en lo mejor de nuestras sepulturas sepulta a tu muerta; ninguno de nosotros te impedirá su sepultura, para que entierres tu muerta”. ^23:7Y Abraham se levantó, y se inclinó al pueblo de aquella tierra, a los hijos de Het; ^23:8y habló con ellos, diciendo, “Si tenéis voluntad que yo sepulte mi muerta de delante de mí, oídme, e interceded por mí con Efrón, hijo de Zoar, ^23:9para que me dé la cueva de Macpela, que tiene al cabo de su heredad; que por su justo precio me la dé, para posesión de sepultura en medio de ustedes”.

^23:10Este Efrón se hallaba entre los hijos de Het; y respondió Efrón heteo a Abraham, en oídos de los hijos de Het, de todos los que entraban por la puerta de su ciudad, diciendo: ^23:11“No, señor mío, óyeme: te doy la heredad, y te doy también la cueva que está en ella; delante de los hijos de mi pueblo te la doy; sepulta tu muerta”. ^23:12Y Abraham se inclinó delante del pueblo de la tierra. ^23:13Y respondió a Efrón en oídos del pueblo de la tierra, diciendo, “Antes, si te place, te ruego que me oigas; yo daré el precio de la heredad, tómalo de mí, y sepultaré en ella mi muerta”. ^23:14Y respondió Efrón a Abraham, diciéndole: ^23:15“Señor mío, escúchame: la tierra vale cuatrocientos siclos de plata; ¿qué es esto entre tú y yo? Entierra, pues, tu muerta”. ^23:16Entonces Abraham se convino con Efrón, y pesó Abraham a Efrón el dinero que dijo, oyéndolo los hijos de Het, cuatrocientos siclos de plata, de buena ley entre mercaderes. ^23:17Y el campo de Ephron, que estaba en Machpelah, que estaba antes de Mamre: el campo, y la cueva que estaba en él, y todos los árboles que estaban en el campo, que estaban en todas las fronteras alrededor, fueron asegurados ^23:18a Abraham para una posesión en presencia de los hijos de Het, antes de todo lo que entró en la puerta de su ciudad.

^23:19Y después de esto sepultó Abraham a Sara su esposa en la cueva de la heredad de Macpela enfrente de Mamre, que es Hebrón en la tierra de Canaán. ^23:20Así Abraham adquirió de los hijos de Het el campo y la cueva que había en él, como una propiedad para sepultura.

^24:1Y Abraham era viejo y bien entrado en días; y Jehová había bendecido a Abraham en todo. ^24:2Y dijo Abraham a un criado suyo, el más viejo de su casa, que era el que gobernaba en todo lo que tenía, “Pon ahora tu mano debajo de mi muslo, ^24:3y te haré jurar por Jehová (Dios de lo s Cielo y Dios de la tierra), que no has de tomar esposa para mi hijo de las hijas de los cananeos, entre los cuales yo habito; ^24:4sino que irás a mi tierra y a mi parentela, y tomarás esposa para mi hijo Isaac”. ^24:5Y el criado le respondió, “Quizá la mujer no querrá venir en pos de mí a esta tierra: ¿volveré, pues, tu hijo a la tierra de donde saliste?”. ^24:6Y Abraham le dijo: Guárdate que no vuelvas a mi hijo allá. ^24:7Jehová, Dios de los Cielo, que me tomó de la casa de mi padre y de la tierra de mi parentela, y me habló y me juró, diciendo, ‘A tu simiente daré esta tierra’: él enviará su ángel delante de ti, y tú tomarás de allá esposa para mi hijo. ^24:8Y si la mujer no quisiere venir en pos de ti, serás libre de este mi juramento; solamente que no vuelvas allá a mi hijo”. ^24:9Entonces el criado puso su mano debajo del muslo de Abraham su señor, y le juró sobre este asunto.

^24:10Y el criado tomó diez camellos de los camellos de su señor, y se fue, pues tenía a su disposición todos los bienes de su señor: y puesto en camino, llegó a Mesopotamia, a la ciudad de Nacor. ^24:11E hizo arrodillar los camellos fuera de la ciudad, junto a un pozo de agua, a la hora de la tarde, a la hora en que salen las doncellas por agua. ^24:12Y dijo, “Oh Jehová, Dios de mi señor Abraham, dame, te ruego, el tener hoy buen encuentro, y haz misericordia con mi señor Abraham. ^24:13He aquí, yo estoy junto a la fuente de agua, y las hijas de los varones de esta ciudad salen por agua. ^24:14Sea, pues, que la doncella a quien yo dijere, ‘Baja tu cántaro, te ruego, para que yo beba’, y ella respondiere, ‘Bebe, y también daré de beber a tus camellos’: que sea ésta la que tú has destinado para tu siervo Isaac. Y en esto conoceré que habrás hecho misericordia con mi señor”. ^24:15Y aconteció que antes que él acabase de hablar, he aquí Rebeca, que había nacido a Betuel, hijo de Milca, esposa de Nacor hermano de Abraham, la cual salía con su cántaro sobre su hombro. ^24:16Y la doncella era de muy hermoso aspecto, virgen, a la que varón no había conocido; la cual descendió a la fuente, y llenó su cántaro, y se volvía. ^24:17Entonces el criado corrió hacia ella, y dijo, “Te ruego que me des a beber un poco de agua de tu cántaro”. ^24:18Y ella respondió, “Bebe, señor mío”. Y se dio prisa a bajar su cántaro sobre su mano, y le dio a beber. ^24:19Y cuando acabó de darle a beber, dijo, “También para tus camellos sacaré agua, hasta que acaben de beber”. ^24:20Y se dio prisa, y vació su cántaro en la pila, y corrió otra vez al pozo para sacar agua, y sacó para todos sus camellos. ^24:21Y el hombre estaba maravillado de ella, callando, para saber si Jehová había prosperado o no su viaje. ^24:22Y sucedió que cuando los camellos acabaron de beber, el hombre le presentó un pendiente de oro que pesaba medio siclo, y dos brazaletes para sus manos que pesaban diez siclos de oro, ^24:23y dijo, “¿De quién eres hija? Te ruego me digas, ¿hay lugar en casa de tu padre donde posemos?”. ^24:24Y ella respondió, “Soy hija de Betuel, hijo de Milca, el cual ella dio a luz a Nacor”. ^24:25Y añadió, “También hay en nuestra casa paja y mucho forraje, y lugar para posar”. ^24:26El hombre entonces se inclinó, y adoró a Jehová. ^24:27Y dijo, “Bendito sea Jehová, Dios de mi amo Abraham, que no apartó su misericordia y su verdad de mi amo, guiándome Jehová en el camino a casa de los hermanos de mi amo”.

^24:28Y la doncella corrió, e hizo saber en casa de su madre estas cosas. ^24:29Y Rebeca tenía un hermano que se llamaba Labán, el cual corrió afuera al hombre, a la fuente. ^24:30Y sucedió que cuando él vio el pendiente y los brazaletes en las manos de su hermana, y cuando oyó las palabras de su hermana Rebeca, que decía, “Así me habló aquel hombre”, vino a él; y he aquí que él estaba con los camellos junto a la fuente. ^24:31Y le dijo, “Ven, bendito de Jehová. ¿Por qué estás fuera? Yo he limpiado la casa, y el lugar para los camellos”. ^24:32Entonces el hombre vino a casa, y Labán desató los camellos; y les dio paja y forraje, y agua para lavar los pies de él, y los pies de los hombres que con él venían. ^24:33Y le pusieron delante qué comer; pero él dijo, “No comeré hasta que haya dicho mi mensaje”. Y él le dijo, “Habla”. ^24:34Entonces dijo, “Soy criado de Abraham; ^24:35y Jehová ha bendecido mucho a mi amo, y él se ha engrandecido. Y le ha dado ovejas y vacas, plata y oro, siervos y siervas, camellos y asnos. ^24:36Y Sara, la esposa de mi amo, en su vejez dio a luz un hijo a mi señor, a quien le ha dado todo cuanto tiene. ^24:37Y mi amo me hizo jurar, diciendo, ‘No tomarás esposa para mi hijo de las hijas de los cananeos, en cuya tierra habito; ^24:38sino que irás a la casa de mi padre, y a mi parentela, y tomarás esposa para mi hijo’. ^24:39Y yo dije a mi señor, ‘Quizás la mujer no querrá seguirme’. ^24:40Entonces él me respondió, ‘Jehová, en cuya presencia he andado, enviará su ángel contigo, y prosperará tu camino; y tomarás esposa para mi hijo de mi linaje y de la casa de mi padre. ^24:41Entonces serás libre de mi juramento, cuando hubieres llegado a mi linaje; y si no te la dieren, serás libre de mi juramento’. ^24:42Llegué, pues, hoy a la fuente, y dije, ‘Jehová, Dios de mi señor Abraham, si tú prosperas ahora mi camino por el cual ando; ^24:43he aquí yo estoy junto a la fuente de agua; sea, pues, que la doncella que saliere a sacar agua, a la cual dijere, ‘Dame a beber, te ruego, un poco de agua de tu cántaro’, ^24:44y ella me respondiere, ‘Bebe tú, y también para tus camellos sacaré agua’, sea ésta la mujer que destinó Jehová para el hijo de mi señor’. ^24:45Y antes que acabase de hablar en mi corazón, he aquí Rebeca, que salía con su cántaro sobre su hombro; y descendió a la fuente, y sacó agua; y le dije, ‘Te ruego que me des a beber’. ^24:46Y prestamente bajó su cántaro de sobre su hombro, y dijo, ‘Bebe, y también a tus camellos daré a beber’: y bebí; y también dio de beber a mis camellos. ^24:47Entonces le pregunté, y dije, ‘¿De quién eres hija?’ Y ella respondió, ‘Hija de Betuel, hijo de Nacor, que le dio a luz Milca’. Entonces le puse un pendiente sobre su nariz, y brazaletes sobre sus manos. ^24:48Y me incliné, y adoré a Jehová, y bendije a Jehová, Dios de mi señor Abraham, que me había guiado por camino de verdad para tomar la hija del hermano de mi señor para su hijo. ^24:49Ahora, pues, si ustedes hacéis misericordia y verdad con mi señor, declarádmelo; y si no, declarádmelo; y me iré a la derecha o a la izquierda”. ^24:50Entonces Labán y Betuel respondieron y dijeron, “De Jehová ha salido esto; no podemos hablarte malo ni bueno. ^24:51He ahí Rebeca delante de ti; tómala y vete, y sea esposa del hijo de tu señor, como lo ha dicho Jehová”. ^24:52Y aconteció que cuando el criado de Abraham oyó sus palabras, se inclinó a tierra, y adoró a Jehová. ^24:53Y sacó el criado vasos de plata y vasos de oro y vestidos, y dio a Rebeca; también dio cosas preciosas a su hermano y a su madre. ^24:54Y comieron y bebieron él y los varones que venían con él, y durmieron.

Y levantándose de mañana, dijo, “Enviadme a mi señor”. ^24:55Entonces respondió su hermano y su madre, “Espere la doncella con nosotros a lo menos diez días, y después irá”. ^24:56Y él les dijo, “No me detengáis, pues que Jehová ha prosperado mi camino; despachadme para que me vaya a mi señor”. ^24:57Respondieron entonces, “Llamemos a la doncella y preguntémosle”. ^24:58Y llamaron a Rebeca, y le dijeron, “¿Irás tú con este varón?”. Y ella respondió, “Sí, iré”. ^24:59Entonces dejaron ir a Rebeca su hermana, y a su nodriza, y al criado de Abraham y a sus hombres. ^24:60Y bendijeron a Rebeca, y le dijeron, “Nuestra hermana eres; sé madre de millares de millares, y tu generación posea la puerta de sus enemigos”. ^24:61Se levantó entonces Rebeca y sus mozas, y subieron sobre los camellos, y siguieron al hombre; y el criado tomó a Rebeca, y se fue.

^24:62Y Isaac vino del camino del pozo Lahai-roi: porque él habitaba en la tierra del sur. ^24:63Y había salido Isaac a orar al campo, a la hora de la tarde; y alzando sus ojos miró, y he aquí los camellos que venían. ^24:64Rebeca también alzó sus ojos, y vio a Isaac, y descendió del camello; ^24:65porque había preguntado al criado, “¿Quién es este varón que viene por el campo hacia nosotros?”. Y el siervo había respondido, “Éste es mi señor”. Ella entonces tomó el velo, y se cubrió. ^24:66Entonces el criado contó a Isaac todo lo que había hecho. ^24:67Y la introdujo Isaac a la tienda de su madre Sara, y tomó a Rebeca por esposa; y la amó. Y se consoló Isaac después de la muerte de su madre.

¶El complemento   Abraham e Ismael murieron, pero Isaac se mantuvo (25:1 - 18)

^25:1Y Abraham tomó otra esposa, cuyo nombre era Cetura; ^25:2la cual le dio a luz a Zimram, a Jocsán, a Medán, a Madián, a Isbac y a Súa. ^25:3Y Jocsán engendró a Seba y a Dedán: y los hijos de Dedán fueron Asurim, Letusim y Leumim. ^25:4Y los hijos de Madián: Efa, Efer, Hanoc, Abida y Eldaa. Todos éstos fueron hijos de Cetura. ^25:5Y Abraham dio todo cuanto tenía a Isaac. ^25:6Y a los hijos de sus concubinas dio Abraham dones, y los envió lejos de Isaac su hijo, cuando aún él vivía, hacia el oriente, a la tierra oriental. ^25:7Y éstos fueron los días de vida que vivió Abraham; ciento setenta y cinco años. ^25:8Y exhaló el espíritu, y murió Abraham en buena vejez, anciano y lleno de días y fue unido a su pueblo. ^25:9Y lo sepultaron Isaac e Ismael sus hijos en la cueva de Macpela, en la heredad de Efrón, hijo de Zoar heteo, que está enfrente de Mamre: ^25:10heredad que compró Abraham de los hijos de Het; allí fue Abraham sepultado, y Sara su esposa.

^25:11Y sucedió, después de muerto Abraham, que Dios bendijo a Isaac su hijo: y Isaac habitó junto al pozo “Lahai-roi”.

^25:12Y éstas son las generaciones de Ismael, hijo de Abraham, que le dio a luz Agar egipcia, sierva de Sara.

^25:13Éstos, pues, son los nombres de los hijos de Ismael, por sus nombres, por sus linajes: El primogénito de Ismael, Nebaiot, Cedar, Abdeel, Mibsam, ^25:14Misma, Duma, Massa, ^25:15Hadar, Tema, Jetur, Nafis y Cedema. ^25:16Éstos son los hijos de Ismael, y éstos sus nombres por sus villas y por sus campamentos; doce príncipes por sus familias.

^25:17Y éstos fueron los años de la vida de Ismael, ciento treinta y siete años; y exhaló el espíritu Ismael, y murió; y fue unido a su pueblo. ^25:18Y habitaron desde Havila hasta Shur, que está enfrente de Egipto (viniendo a Asiria); y murió en presencia de todos sus hermanos.
