§Complement Introduction: The relationship between Egypt and Israel changed for the worse after the death of Joseph’s generation (1:1 - 14)

¶Opposite After moving to Egypt, the children of Israel multiplied from seventy souls to a great multitude (1:1 - 7)

^1:1Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt (every man and his household came with Jacob): ^1:2Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, ^1:3Issachar, Zebulun, Benjamin, ^1:4Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

^1:11Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens; and they built treasure cities for Pharaoh: Pithom and Raamses.

^1:12But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew; and they were grieved because of the children of Israel.

^1:13And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with tyranny; ^1:14and they made their lives bitter with hard slavery: in mortar, in brick, and in all manner of service in the field. All their service, in which they made them serve, was with tyranny.

§Complement Body: God prepared Moses for future leadership in the household of Pharaoh king of Egypt (1:15 - 2:17)

¶Unique The midwives refused to obey the command of Pharaoh to kill the male children, so God blessed them (1:15 - 21)

^1:15And the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives (of which the name of one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah); ^1:16and he said, “When you do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the birth stools, if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.”

^1:17But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the male children alive. ^1:18And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, and have saved the male children alive?” ^1:19And the midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women: for they are vigorous, and are delivered before the midwives come in to them.”

^1:20Therefore God dealt well with the midwives; and the people multiplied, and became very mighty.

^1:21And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.

^1:22And Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “Every son that is born you shall cast into the river; and every daughter you shall save alive.”

¶Complement Moses was born and placed in the river in an ark of bulrushes to save his life (1:22 - 2:4)

^2:1And a man of the house of Levi went, and he took a daughter of Levi to be his wife.

¶Complement God moved Pharaoh’s daughter to save Moses from the river and take him as her son (2:5 - 10)

And when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maidservant to bring it. ^2:6And when she opened it, she saw the child; and, behold, the baby wept; and she had compassion on him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”

^2:7Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call to you a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?” ^2:8And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.”

And the girl went and called the child’s mother; ^2:9and Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away, and nurse it for me; and I will give you your wages.” And the woman took the child, and nursed it.

¶Opposite Moses killed an Egyptian to defend one of his Hebrew relatives (2:11 - 14)

^2:11And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out to his brethren; and he looked on their burdens.

§Unique Conclusion: God had mercy on Moses and remembered his Covenant with Israel (2:18 - 25)

¶Complement God had mercy on Moses and gave him a home and a wife with a family of the Midianites (2:18 - 22)

^2:18And when they came to Reuel their father, he said, “How did you come home so soon today?” ^2:19And they said, “An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds; and also he drew enough water for us, and watered the flock.”
