Deuteronomy, Chapter 2.3: Do what is just toward your family (20:1 - 22:30)

Introduction: Be compassionate to your soldiers and harsh to your enemies (20:1 - 20)

¶Opposite   Be compassionate to those in the army who are not prepared to die (20:1 - 9)

¶Opposite   Be harsh to your enemies who will not make peace with you or whom Jehovah has commanded you to destroy (20:10 - 20)

Body: Do justice to your children (21:1 - 23)

¶Opposite   Ask Jehovah for mercy when a dead person is found in the field, but no one knows who killed him (21:1 - 9)

¶Opposite   Treat a foreign woman with justice who was brought captive from a foreign city after a war (21:10 - 14)

¶Complement   A man with two wives shall be just in his treatment of the children of both woman (21:15 - 17)

¶Complement   The parents of a stubborn and rebellious son shall take him to the elders of his city to receive legal justice (21:18 - 21)

^20:1When you go out to battle against your enemies, and see horses, chariots, and a people more than yourself, be not afraid of them: for Jehovah your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.

^20:2And it shall be, when you have come near to the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak to the people, ^20:3and shall say to them, ‘Hear, O Israel: you approach this day to battle against your enemies; let your hearts not faint, fear not, and do not tremble; neither be terrified because of them: ^20:4for Jehovah your God is he that is going with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.’

^20:5And the officers shall speak to the people, saying, ‘What man is there that has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he dies in the battle, and another man dedicates it. ^20:6And what man is he that has planted a vineyard, and has not yet eaten of it? Let him also go and return to his house, lest he dies in the battle, and another man eats of it. ^20:7And what man is there that has betrothed a wife, and has not taken her? Let him go and return to his house, lest he dies in the battle, and another man takes her.’

^20:8And the officers shall speak further to the people, and they shall say, ‘What man is there that is fearful and fainthearted? Let him go and return to his house, lest his brethren's heart faint as well as his heart.’

^20:9And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking to the people, that they shall make captains of the armies to lead the people.

¶Opposite   Be harsh to your enemies who will not make peace with you or whom Jehovah has commanded you to destroy (20:10 - 20)

^20:10When you come near to a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace to it.

^20:11And it shall be, if it makes you an answer of peace, and opens to you, then it shall be, that all the people that are found in it shall be tributaries to you, and they shall serve you.

^20:12And if it will not make peace with you, but will make war against you, then you shall besiege it. ^20:13And when Jehovah your God has delivered it into your hands, you shall smite every male of it with the edge of the sword; ^20:14but the women, the little ones, the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all its plunder, you shall take to yourself; and you shall eat the plunder of your enemies, which Jehovah your God has given you. ^20:15Thus shall you do to all the cities that are very far off from you, which are not of the cities of these nations.

^20:16But of the cities of these people, which Jehovah your God is giving you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes; ^20:17but you shall utterly destroy them (namely, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, as Jehovah your God has commanded you), ^20:18that they do not teach you to do after all their abominations, which they have done to their gods; in this manner you would sin against Jehovah your God.

^20:19When you shall besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, you shall not destroy its fruit trees by forcing an axe against them: for you may eat of them. And you shall not cut them down (for the tree of the field is man's life) to employ them in the siege. ^20:20Only the trees which you know that they are not trees for food, you shall destroy and cut them down; and you shall build bulwarks against the city that makes war with you, until it has been subdued.

§Complement   Body: Do justice to your children (21:1 - 23)

^21:1If one is found slain in the land which Jehovah your God is giving you to possess it, lying in the field, and it is not known who has slain him, ^21:2then your elders and your judges shall come forth, and they shall measure to the cities which are round about him that has been slain; ^21:3and it shall be, that the city which is next to the slain man, even the elders of that city shall take a heifer, which has not been worked with, and which has not drawn in the yoke; ^21:4and the elders of that city shall bring the heifer down to a rough valley, which is neither plowed nor sown, and shall strike off the heifer's head there in the valley. ^21:5And the priests the sons of Levi shall come near (for Jehovah your God has chosen them to minister to him, and to bless in the Name of Jehovah; and by their word shall every controversy and every stroke be tried); ^21:6and all the elders of that city, that are next to the slain man, shall wash their hands over the heifer that was beheaded in the valley; ^21:7and they shall answer and say, ‘Our hands have not shed this blood; neither have our eyes seen it. ^21:8Be merciful, O Jehovah, to your people Israel, whom you have redeemed; and lay not innocent blood to your people of Israel's charge.’ And the blood shall be forgiven them. ^21:9In this manner you shall put away the guilt of innocent blood from among you, when you shall do that which is right in the sight of Jehovah.

^21:10When you go forth to make war against your enemies, and Jehovah your God has delivered them into your hands; and you have taken them captive, ^21:11and see among the captives a beautiful woman, and have a desire to her, that you would have her to be your wife, ^21:12then you shall bring her home to your house; and she shall shave her head, and trim her nails; ^21:13and she shall put the garments of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in your house, and bewail her father and her mother a full month; and after that you shall go in to her, and be her husband, and she shall be your wife. ^21:14And it shall be, if you have no delight in her, then you shall let her go where she wishes; but you shall not sell her at all for money; you shall not make merchandise of her, because you have humbled her.

^21:15If a man has two wives, one beloved, and another hated, and they have born him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the firstborn son is hers that was hated, ^21:16then it shall be, when he makes his sons to inherit that which he has, that he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn before the son of the hated, who is truly the firstborn; ^21:17but he shall acknowledge the son of the hated as the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he has: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.

^21:18If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son, who will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and when they have disciplined him, will not listen to them, ^21:19then his father and his mother shall lay hold on him, and bring him out to the elders of his city, and to the gate of his place; ^21:20and they shall say to the elders of his city, ‘This our son is stubborn and rebellious; he will not obey our voice. He is a glutton, and a drunkard.’ ^21:21And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, so that he dies. In this manner you shall put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

^21:22And if a man has committed a sin worthy of death, and he is to be put to death, and you hang him on a tree: ^21:23his body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but you shall in any manner bury him that same day (for he that is hung is accursed by God), so that your land is not defiled, which Jehovah your God is giving you for an inheritance.

^22:1You shall not see your brother's ox or his sheep go astray, and hide yourself from them; you shall in any case return them to your brother. ^22:2And if your brother is not near to you, or if you do not know him, then you shall bring it to your own house; and it shall be with you until your brother seeks after it, and you shall restore it to him again. ^22:3In like manner you shall do with his donkey; and so shall you do with his garments; and with all lost things of your brother's, which he has lost, and you have found, you shall do likewise; you may not hide yourself. ^22:4You shall not see your brother's donkey or his ox fall down by the way, and hide yourself from them. You shall surely help him to lift them up again.

^22:5The woman shall not wear that which pertains to a man; neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination to Jehovah your God.

^22:6If a bird's nest chances to be before you in the way in any tree, or on the ground, whether they are young ones, or eggs, and the mother sitting upon the young, or upon the eggs, you shall not take the mother with the young. ^22:7But you shall in any case let the mother go, and take the young to you, that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days. ^22:8When you build a new house, then you shall make a parapet for your roof, so that you do not bring blood upon your house, if any man falls from there.

^22:9You shall not sow your vineyard with diverse seeds, lest the fruit of your seed that you have sown, and the fruit of your vineyard, is defiled. ^22:10You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey together. ^22:11You shall not wear a garment of diverse sorts, such as of wool and linen together.

^22:12You shall make yourself fringes upon the four quarters of your vesture, with which you cover yourself.

¶Complement   Do justice in matters of immorality (22:13 - 30)

^22:13If any man takes a wife, and goes in to her, and hates her, ^22:14and gives occasions of speech against her, and brings up an evil name upon her, and says, ‘I took this woman as my wife; and when I came to her, I did not find her a virgin’; ^22:15then the father of the girl, and her mother, shall take and bring forth the evidence of the girl's virginity to the elders of the city in the gate. ^22:16And the girl's father shall say to the elders, ‘I gave my daughter to this man to be his wife, and he hates her; ^22:17and, see, he has given occasions of speech against her, saying, ‘I did not find your daughter a virgin’; and yet this is the proof of my daughter's virginity.’ And they shall spread the cloth before the elders of the city. ^22:18And the elders of that city shall take that man and chastise him; ^22:19and they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver, and give them to the father of the girl, because he has brought up an evil name upon a virgin of Israel. And she shall be his wife; he may not divorce her all his days.

^22:20But if this thing is true, and the proofs of virginity are not found for the girl, ^22:21then they shall bring the girl out to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she dies, because she has done foolishly in Israel, to play the whore in her father's house; in this manner you shall put away evil from among you.

^22:22If a man is found lying with a woman married to a husband, then they shall both of them die: both the man that lay with the woman, and the woman; in this manner you shall put evil away from Israel.

^22:23If a girl that is a virgin is betrothed to a husband, and a man finds her in the city, and lies with her, ^22:24then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them with stones that they die: the girl, because she did not cry, being in the city; and the man, because he has humbled his neighbor's wife; in this manner you shall put away evil from among you. ^22:25But if a man finds a betrothed girl in the field, and the man forces her, and lies with her, then only the man that lay with her shall die; ^22:26but to the girl you shall do nothing; there is no sin worthy of death in the girl: for as when a man rises against his neighbor, and slays him, even so is this matter: ^22:27for he found her in the field, and the betrothed girl cried, and there was none to save her. ^22:28If a man finds a virgin girl who is not betrothed, and lays hold on her and lies with her, and they are found, ^22:29then the man that lay with her shall give fifty shekels of silver to the girl's father, and she shall be his wife. Because he has humbled her, he may not divorce her all his days.

^22:30A man shall not take his father's wife, nor discover his father's skirt.

^20:2Y será que, cuando os acercareis para combatir, vendrá el sacerdote, y hablará al pueblo, ^20:3y les dirá, ‘Oye, Israel, ustedes os juntáis hoy en batalla contra vuestros enemigos; no desmaye vuestro corazón, no temáis, no os azoréis, ni tampoco os desalentéis delante de ellos: ^20:4porque Jehová vuestro Dios va con ustedes, para pelear por ustedes contra vuestros enemigos, para salvaros’.

^20:5Y los oficiales hablarán al pueblo, diciendo, ‘¿Quién ha edificado casa nueva, y no la ha estrenado? Vaya, y vuélvase a su casa, no sea que muera en la batalla, y algún otro la estrene. ^20:6¿Y quién ha plantado viña, y no ha hecho común uso de ella? Vaya, y vuélvase a su casa, no sea que muera en la batalla, y algún otro la goce. ^20:7¿Y quién se ha desposado con mujer, y no la ha tomado? Vaya, y vuélvase a su casa, no sea que muera en la batalla, y algún otro la tome’.

^20:8Y los oficiales hablarán otra vez al pueblo, y dirán: ¿Quién es hombre medroso y apocado de corazón? Vaya, y vuélvase a su casa, y no apoque el corazón de sus hermanos, como el corazón suyo.

^20:9Y será que, cuando los oficiales acabaren de hablar al pueblo, entonces los capitanes de los ejércitos mandarán delante del pueblo.

¶Lo opuesto   Sed severo con tus enemigos quien no va a hacer la paz con usted o con los que Jehová os mandó destruir (20:10 - 20)

^20:10Cuando te acercares a una ciudad para combatirla, le proclamarás la paz.

^20:11Y será que, si te diere una respuesta de paz, y te abriere, todo el pueblo que en ella fuere hallado te será tributario, y te servirá.

^20:12Pero si no hiciere paz contigo, y emprendiere guerra contra ti, entonces la sitiarás. ^20:13Luego que Jehová tu Dios la entregare en tu mano, herirás a todo varón suyo a filo de espada. ^20:14Pero las mujeres y los niños, y los animales, y todo lo que haya en la ciudad, todo el despojo, tomarás para ti; comerás del despojo de tus enemigos, que Jehová tu Dios te ha entregado. ^20:15Así harás a todas las ciudades que están muy lejos de ti, que no son de las ciudades de estas naciones.

^20:16Pero de las ciudades de estos pueblos que Jehová tu Dios te da por heredad, no dejarás con vida nada que respire; ^20:17sino que del todo los destruirás; al heteo, al amorreo, al cananeo, al ferezeo, al heveo y al jebuseo, como Jehová tu Dios te ha mandado; ^20:18para que no os enseñen a hacer según todas sus abominaciones, que ellos hacen para sus dioses, y pequéis contra Jehová vuestro Dios.

^20:19Cuando pusieres cerco a alguna ciudad, peleando contra ella muchos días para tomarla, no destruirás sus árboles frutales metiendo hacha en ellos: porque de ellos podrás comer; y no los talarás para emplearlos en el sitio: porque el árbol del campo es la vida del hombre. ^20:20Pero el árbol que supieres que no es árbol para comer, lo destruirás y lo talarás, y construye baluarte contra la ciudad que pelea contigo, hasta sojuzgarla.

§El complemento   Cuerpo: Haced justicia a tus hijos (21:1 - 23)

^21:1Y si en la tierra que Jehová tu Dios te da para que la poseas, fuere hallado alguien muerto, tendido en el campo, y no se supiere quién lo mató, ^21:2entonces tus Ancianos y tus jueces saldrán y medirán hasta las ciudades que están alrededor del muerto. ^21:3Y será, que los Ancianos de aquella ciudad, de la ciudad más cercana al muerto, tomarán de la vacada una becerra que no haya trabajado, que no haya llevado yugo; ^21:4y los Ancianos de aquella ciudad traerán la becerra a un valle áspero, que nunca haya sido arado ni sembrado, y cortarán el cuello a la becerra allí en el valle. ^21:5Entonces vendrán los sacerdotes hijos de Leví: porque a ellos escogió Jehová tu Dios para que le sirvan, y para bendecir en Nombre de Jehová; y por la palabra de ellos se resolverá toda controversia y toda ofensa. ^21:6Y todos los Ancianos de aquella ciudad más cercana al muerto lavarán sus manos sobre la becerra degollada en el valle. ^21:7Y protestarán, y dirán, ‘Nuestras manos no han derramado esta sangre, ni nuestros ojos lo vieron. ^21:8Sé misericordioso, oh Jehová, para con tu pueblo Israel, al cual tú redimiste; y no imputes la sangre inocente a tu pueblo Israel’. Y la sangre les será perdonada. ^21:9Y tú quitarás la culpa de la sangre inocente de en medio de ti, cuando hicieres lo que es recto a los ojos de Jehová.

^21:10Cuando salieres a la guerra contra tus enemigos, y Jehová tu Dios los entregare en tu mano, y tomares de ellos cautivos, ^21:11y vieres entre los cautivos alguna mujer hermosa, y la codiciares, y la tomares para ti por esposa, ^21:12la meterás en tu casa; y ella rasurará su cabeza, y cortará sus uñas, ^21:13y se quitará el vestido de su cautiverio, y se quedará en tu casa y llorará a su padre y a su madre por todo un mes; y después entrarás a ella, y tú serás su marido, y ella será tu esposa. ^21:14Y si ella no te agradare, entonces la dejarás en libertad; no la venderás por dinero, ni mercadearás con ella, por cuanto la humillaste.

^21:15Y si un hombre tuviere dos esposas, una amada y otra aborrecida, y la amada y la aborrecida le dieren hijos, y el hijo primogénito fuere de la aborrecida; ^21:16será que, el día que hiciere heredar a sus hijos lo que tuviere, no podrá dar el derecho de primogenitura al hijo de la amada con preferencia al hijo de la aborrecida, que es el primogénito; ^21:17sino que al hijo de la aborrecida reconocerá por primogénito, dándole una porción doble de todo lo que tiene: porque él es el principio de su vigor, suyo es el derecho de la primogenitura.

^21:18Cuando alguno tuviere hijo contumaz y rebelde, que no obedeciere a la voz de su padre ni a la voz de su madre, y habiéndolo castigado, no les obedeciere; ^21:19entonces su padre y su madre lo tomarán, y lo sacarán a los Ancianos de su ciudad, y a la puerta de su ciudad; ^21:20y dirán a los Ancianos de la ciudad, ‘Este nuestro hijo es contumaz y rebelde, no obedece a nuestra voz; es glotón y borracho’. ^21:21Entonces todos los hombres de su ciudad lo apedrearán hasta que muera; así quitarás el mal de en medio de ti; y todo Israel oirá, y temerá.

^21:22Y si alguno hubiere cometido algún pecado digno de muerte, y lo hiciereis morir, y lo colgareis de un madero, ^21:23su cuerpo no ha de permanecer toda la noche en el madero, sino que sin falta lo enterrarás el mismo día: porque maldito por Dios es el colgado; y no contaminarás tu tierra que Jehová tu Dios te da por heredad.

§El complemento   Conclusión: Siempre haced justicia (22:1 - 30)

^22:1No verás el buey de tu hermano, o su cordero, perdidos, y te retirarás de ellos; sin falta los volverás a tu hermano. ^22:2Y si tu hermano no fuere tu vecino, o no le conocieres, los recogerás en tu casa, y estarán contigo hasta que tu hermano los busque, y se los devolverás. ^22:3Y así harás con su asno, así harás también con su vestido, y lo mismo harás con toda cosa perdida de tu hermano que se le perdiere y tú la hallares; no podrás retraerte de ello. ^22:4No verás el asno de tu hermano, o su buey, caídos en el camino, y te esconderás de ellos; sin falta le ayudarás a levantarlos.

^22:5No vestirá la mujer ropa de hombre, ni el hombre se pondrá vestido de mujer: porque abominación es a Jehová tu Dios cualquiera que esto hace.

^22:6Si encontrares en el camino algún nido de ave en cualquier árbol, o sobre la tierra, con pollos o huevos, y estuviere la madre echada sobre los pollos o sobre los huevos, no tomarás la madre con los hijos; ^22:7sin falta dejarás ir a la madre, y tomarás los pollos para ti; para que te vaya bien, y prolongues tus días. ^22:8Cuando edificares casa nueva, harás pretil a tu terrado, para que no pongas sangre en tu casa, si de él cayere alguno.

^22:9No sembrarás tu viña con varias semillas, para que no se pierda la plenitud de la semilla que sembraste, y el fruto de la viña. ^22:10No ararás con buey y con asno juntamente. ^22:11No vestirás ropa con mixtura de lana y lino juntamente.

^22:12Te harás flecos en las cuatro orillas de tu manto con que te cubrieres.

¶El complemento   Haced justicia es justo en asuntos de inmoralidad (22:13 - 30)

^22:13Cuando alguno tomare esposa, y después de haber entrado a ella la aborreciere, ^22:14y le atribuyere algunas faltas, y esparciere sobre ella mala fama y dijere, ‘Tomé a esta mujer y me llegué a ella, y no la hallé virgen’; ^22:15entonces el padre de la joven y su madre tomarán, y sacarán las señales de la virginidad de la doncella a los Ancianos de la ciudad, en la puerta. ^22:16Y dirá el padre de la joven a los Ancianos, ‘Yo di mi hija a este hombre por esposa, y él la aborrece; ^22:17y he aquí, él le pone tachas de algunas cosas, diciendo, ‘No encontré virgen a tu hija’. Pero he aquí las señales de la virginidad de mi hija’. Y extenderán la sábana delante de los Ancianos de la ciudad. ^22:18Entonces los Ancianos de la ciudad tomarán al hombre y lo castigarán; ^22:19y le multarán con cien siclos de plata, los cuales darán al padre de la joven, por cuanto esparció mala fama sobre una virgen de Israel; y ella será su esposa; no podrá despedirla en todos sus días.

^22:20Pero si esto fuere verdad, que no se hubiere hallado virginidad en la joven, ^22:21entonces la sacarán a la puerta de la casa de su padre, y la apedrearán con piedras los hombres de su ciudad, y morirá; por cuanto hizo vileza en Israel fornicando en casa de su padre; así quitarás el mal de en medio de ti.

^22:22Cuando se sorprendiere alguno acostado con mujer casada con marido, ambos morirán, el hombre que se acostó con la mujer, y la mujer; así quitarás el mal de Israel.

^22:23Si hubiere una doncella virgen desposada con marido, y alguno la hallare en la ciudad, y se acostare con ella; ^22:24entonces los sacaréis a ambos a la puerta de aquella ciudad, y los apedrearán con piedras, y morirán; la doncella porque no dio voces en la ciudad, y el hombre porque humilló a la esposa de su prójimo; así quitarás el mal de en medio de ti. ^22:25Pero si el hombre hallare en el campo a una doncella desposada, y él la forzare y se acostare con ella, entonces morirá sólo el hombre que se acostó con ella; ^22:26y a la doncella no harás nada; la doncella no tiene culpa de muerte: porque como cuando alguno se levanta contra su prójimo, y le quita la vida, así es en este caso: ^22:27porque él la halló en el campo; y la doncella desposada dio voces, pero no hubo quien la librase. ^22:28Cuando alguno hallare doncella virgen, que no fuere desposada, y la tomare y se acostare con ella, y fueren hallados; ^22:29entonces el hombre que se acostó con ella dará al padre de la doncella cincuenta siclos de plata, y ella será su esposa. Por cuanto la humilló, no la podrá despedir en todos sus días.

^22:30No tomará alguno la esposa de su padre, ni descubrirá el regazo de su padre.
