Deuteronomy, Chapter 2.2: Honor your God-ordained Judges, Priests, and Kings (16:18 - 19:21)

Introduction: The character and responsibilities of the judges, officers, and priests in Israel (16:18 - 7:13)

¶Opposite   The judges and officers of the land must be unbiased and not take bribes (16:18 - 7:1)

¶Opposite   The priests and judges will be the final arbiter of all disputes in Israel (17:2 - 13)

Body: The king must be a man chosen by God, who loves Jehovah and hates covetousness (17:14 - 18:8)

¶Unique   Jehovah shall determine who shall be the king over Israel (17:14 - 15)

¶Complement   The king shall not multiply his horses or his wives or his gold and silver (17:16 - 17)

¶Complement   The king shall be a diligent and obedient student of the Law of Moses (17:18 - 20)

¶Opposite   The priests and the tribe of Levi serve Jehovah; therefore they have no part nor inheritance of land with Israel (18:1 - 5)

¶Opposite   If a Levite comes to the place which Jehovah shall choose, he shall have equal portions to eat, along with his brethren (18:6 - 8)

Conclusion: The people must listen to the Prophet like Moses; the judges must punish false witnesses (18:9 - 19:21)

^16:18You shall make judges and officers for you in all your gates, which Jehovah your God is giving you, throughout your tribes; and they shall judge the people with just judgment.

^16:19You shall not pervert judgment; you shall not show partiality; neither take a bribe: for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise, and perverts the words of the righteous.

^16:20That which is altogether just you shall follow, that you may live, and inherit the land which Jehovah your God is giving you.

^16:21You shall not plant yourself any tree as an image of Asherah near to the altar of Jehovah your God, which you shall make you. ^16:22Neither shall you set up any statue, which Jehovah your God hates.

^17:1You shall not sacrifice to Jehovah your God any bull, or sheep, in which is a blemish, or any evil characteristic: for that is an abomination to Jehovah your God.

^17:2If there is found among you, within any of your gates which Jehovah your God is giving you, man or woman, that has done wickedness in the sight of Jehovah your God, in transgressing his Covenant, ^17:3and has gone and served other gods, and worshipped them (either the sun, or moon, or any of the constellations of the zodiac, which I have not commanded); ^17:4and it is told you; and you have heard of it, and inquired diligently; and, behold, it is true, and the thing certain, that such abomination has been done in Israel, ^17:5then you shall bring forth that man or that woman, who has committed that wicked thing, to your gates, even that man or that woman, and shall stone them with stones until they die.

^17:6At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death. ^17:7The hands of the witnesses shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterward the hands of all the people. In this manner you shall put the evil away from among you.

^17:8If there arises a matter too difficult for you in judgment, between blood and blood, between plea and plea, and between stroke and stroke, being matters of controversy within your gates, then you shall arise, and go up into the place which Jehovah your God shall choose; ^17:9and you shall come to the priests the Levites, and to the judge that shall be in those days, and inquire; and they shall show you the sentence of judgment.

^17:10And you shall do according to the sentence, which they of that place which Jehovah shall choose shall show you; and you shall observe to do according to all that they instruct you; ^17:11according to the sentence of the Law which they shall teach you, and according to the judgment which they shall tell you, you shall do. You shall not decline from the sentence which they shall show you, to the right hand, nor to the left.

^17:12And the man that will do presumptuously, and will not listen to the priest that stands to minister there before Jehovah your God, or to the judge, even that man shall die; and you shall put away the evil from Israel. ^17:13And all the people shall hear, and fear, and no longer do presumptuously.

^17:14When you have come to the land which Jehovah your God is giving you, and shall possess it, and shall dwell in it, and shall say, ‘I will set a king over me, like as all the nations that are about me’, ^17:15you shall only set him king over you, whom Jehovah your God shall choose. One from among your brethren shall you set king over you. You may not set a Gentile over you, who is not your brother.

^17:16But he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses; forasmuch as Jehovah has said to you, ‘You shall henceforth return no more that way’; ^17:17neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart does not turn away; neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.

^17:18And it shall be, when he sits upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write himself a copy of this Law in a Book out of that which is before the priests the Levites. ^17:19And it shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear Jehovah his God, to keep all the words of this Law and these Statutes, to do them, ^17:20so that his heart is not lifted up above his brethren; and so that he does not turn aside from the Commandment, either to the right hand, or to the left: to the end that he may prolong his days in his kingdom: he and his children, in the midst of Israel.

^18:1The priests the Levites, and all the tribe of Levi, shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel; they shall eat the offerings of Jehovah made by fire, and his inheritance. ^18:2Therefore they shall have no inheritance among their brethren: Jehovah is their inheritance, as he has said to them. ^18:3And this shall be the priest's due from the people, from them that offer a sacrifice, whether it is ox or sheep; and they shall give to the priest the shoulder, the two cheeks, and the maw; ^18:4the firstfruit also of your grain, of your wine, of your oil, and the first of the fleece of your sheep, shall you give him: ^18:5for Jehovah your God has chosen him out of all your tribes, to stand to minister in the Name of Jehovah: him and his sons forever.

^18:6And if a Levite comes from any of your gates out of all Israel, where he sojourned, and comes with all the desire of his mind to the place which Jehovah shall choose, ^18:7then he shall minister in the Name of Jehovah his God, as all his brethren the Levites do, who stand there before Jehovah. ^18:8They shall have equal portions to eat, besides that which comes of the sale of his patrimony.

§Unique   Conclusion: The people must listen to the Prophet like Moses; the judges must punish false witnesses (18:9 - 19:21)

^18:9When you have come into the land which Jehovah your God is giving you, you shall not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. ^18:10There shall not be found among you anyone that makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that uses divination, or practices astrology, or is an enchanter, or a witch, ^18:11or a charmer, or a spiritist, or a wizard, or a necromancer: ^18:12for all that do these things are an abomination to Jehovah; and because of these abominations Jehovah your God is driving them out from before you.

^18:13You shall be blameless with Jehovah your God: ^18:14for these nations, which you shall dispossess, listened to astrologers and to diviners; but as for you, Jehovah your God has not allowed you to do so.

^18:15Jehovah your God will raise up to you a Prophet from the midst of you, of your brethren, like me. You shall listen to him, ^18:16according to all that you desired of Jehovah your God in Horeb in the day of the assembly; saying, ‘Let me not hear again the voice of Jehovah my God; neither let me see this great fire anymore, so that I do not die.’ ^18:17And Jehovah said to me, ‘They have well spoken that which they have spoken. ^18:18I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like you, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak to them all that I shall command him. ^18:19And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my Name, I will require it of him.

^18:20But the prophet, who shall presume to speak a word in my Name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.’

^18:21And if you say in your heart, ‘How shall we know the word that Jehovah has not spoken?’ ^18:22When a prophet speaks in the Name of Jehovah, if the thing does not follow, nor comes to pass, that is the thing which Jehovah has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.

^19:1When Jehovah your God has cut off the nations, whose land Jehovah your God is giving you, and you succeed them, and dwell in their cities, and in their houses: ^19:2you shall separate three cities for you in the midst of your land, which Jehovah your God is giving you to possess it. ^19:3You shall prepare yourselves a road, and divide the territories of your land, which Jehovah your God is giving you to inherit, into three parts, that every slayer may flee there. ^19:4And this is the case of the slayer, who shall flee there, that he may live: whoso kills his neighbor unintentionally, whom he did not hate in time past ^19:5(as when a man goes into the woods with his neighbor to cut wood, and his hand swings a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slips from the handle and strikes his neighbor that he dies), he shall flee to one of those cities and live. ^19:6Lest the avenger of the blood pursues the slayer, while his heart is hot; and he overtakes him, because the way is long; and he slays him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he did not hate him in times past. ^19:7Therefore I command you, saying, ‘You shall separate three cities for you.’ ^19:8And if Jehovah your God enlarges your border, as he has sworn to your fathers, and gives you all the land which he promised to give to your fathers: ^19:9if you shall keep all these Commandments to do them, which I command you this day, to love Jehovah your God, and to walk always in his ways, then you shall add three more cities for yourselves, beside these three, ^19:10so that innocent blood is not shed in your land, which Jehovah your God is giving you for an inheritance, and so blood be upon you. ^19:11But if any man hates his neighbor, and lies in wait for him, and rises up against him, and smites him mortally that he dies, and flees into one of these cities, ^19:12then the elders of his city shall send and bring him there, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die. ^19:13Your eye shall not pity him, but you shall put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with you.

^19:14You shall not move your neighbor's landmark, which they of old time have set in your inheritance, which you shall inherit in the land that Jehovah your God is giving you to possess it.

^19:15One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sins; at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.

^19:16If a false witness rises up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong, ^19:17then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before Jehovah, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days; ^19:18and the judges shall make diligent inquisition; and, behold, if the witness is a false witness, and has testified falsely against his brother, ^19:19then you shall do to him, as he had thought to have done to his brother. In this manner you shall put the evil away from among you. ^19:20And those who remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you.

^19:21And your eye shall not pity, but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, and foot for foot.

Deuteronomio, Capítulo 2.2: Honrad a tus jueces, sacerdotes y reyes quien fueron nombrados por Dios (16:18 - 19:21)

^16:21No te plantarás ningún árbol de Asera cerca del altar de Jehová tu Dios, que tú te habrás hecho. ^16:22Ni te levantarás estatua; lo cual aborrece Jehová tu Dios.

^17:1No sacrificarás para Jehová tu Dios, buey, o cordero, en el cual haya falta o alguna cosa mala: porque es abominación a Jehová tu Dios.

^17:2Cuando se hallare entre ti, en alguna de tus ciudades que Jehová tu Dios te da, hombre, o mujer, que haya hecho mal en ojos de Jehová tu Dios traspasando su Pacto, ^17:3que hubiere ido y servido a dioses ajenos, y se hubiere inclinado a ellos, ya sea al sol, o a la luna, o a todo el ejército del cielo, lo cual yo no he mandado; ^17:4y te fuere dado aviso, y, después que oyeres y hubieres indagado bien, la cosa parece de verdad cierta, que tal abominación ha sido hecha en Israel; ^17:5entonces sacarás al hombre o mujer que hubiere hecho esta mala cosa, a tus puertas, hombre o mujer, y los apedrearás con piedras, y así morirán.

^17:6Por dicho de dos testigos, o de tres testigos, morirá el que hubiere de morir; no morirá por el dicho de un solo testigo. ^17:7La mano de los testigos será primero sobre él para matarlo, y después la mano de todo el pueblo: así quitarás el mal de en medio de ti.

^17:8Cuando alguna cosa te fuere oculta en juicio entre sangre y sangre, entre causa y causa, y entre llaga y llaga, en negocios de litigio en tus ciudades; entonces te levantarás y recurrirás al lugar que Jehová tu Dios escogiere; ^17:9y vendrás a los sacerdotes levitas, y al juez que fuere en aquellos días, y preguntarás; y te enseñarán la sentencia del juicio.

^17:10Y harás según la sentencia que te indicaren los del lugar que Jehová escogiere, y cuidarás de hacer según todo lo que te manifestaren. ^17:11Según la Ley que ellos te enseñaren, y según el juicio que te dijeren, harás: no te apartarás ni a derecha ni a izquierda de la sentencia que te mostraren.

^17:12Y el hombre que procediere con soberbia, no obedeciendo al sacerdote que está para ministrar allí delante de Jehová tu Dios, o al juez, el tal varón morirá: y quitarás el mal de Israel. ^17:13Y todo el pueblo oirá, y temerá, y no se ensoberbecerán más.

^17:16Pero que no se aumente caballos, ni haga volver el pueblo a Egipto para acrecentar caballos: porque Jehová os ha dicho, ‘No procuraréis volver más por este camino’. ^17:17Ni aumentará para sí esposas, para que su corazón no se desvíe; ni plata ni oro acumulará para sí en gran cantidad.

^17:18Y será, cuando se sentare sobre el trono de su reino, que ha de escribir para sí en un Libro una copia de esta Ley, la cual está delante de los sacerdotes levitas. ^17:19Y la tendrá consigo, y leerá en ella todos los días de su vida, para que aprenda a temer a Jehová su Dios, para guardar todas las palabras de esta Ley y estos Estatutos, para ponerlos por obra; ^17:20para que no se eleve su corazón sobre sus hermanos, ni se aparte del mandamiento a derecha ni a izquierda: a fin que prolongue sus días en su reino, él y sus hijos, en medio de Israel.

^18:1Los sacerdotes levitas, toda la tribu de Leví, no tendrán parte ni heredad con Israel; de las ofrendas encendidas a Jehová, y de la heredad de él comerán. ^18:2No tendrán, pues, heredad entre sus hermanos: Jehová es su heredad, como él les ha dicho. ^18:3Y éste será el derecho de los sacerdotes de parte del pueblo, de los que ofrecieren en sacrificio buey o cordero; darán al sacerdote la espalda, y las quijadas, y el cuajar. ^18:4Las primicias de tu grano, de tu vino, y de tu aceite, y las primicias de la lana de tus ovejas le darás: ^18:5porque le ha escogido Jehová tu Dios de todas tus tribus, para que esté para ministrar al Nombre de Jehová, él y sus hijos para siempre.

^18:6Y cuando el Levita saliere de alguna de tus ciudades de todo Israel, donde hubiere peregrinado, y viniere con todo deseo de su alma al lugar que Jehová escogiere, ^18:7ministrará al Nombre de Jehová su Dios, como todos sus hermanos los levitas que estuvieren allí delante de Jehová. ^18:8Tendrán porciones iguales para comer, aparte de lo que obtengan por la venta de sus patrimonios.

^18:9Cuando hubieres entrado en la tierra que Jehová tu Dios te da, no aprenderás a hacer según las abominaciones de aquellas naciones. ^18:10No sea hallado en ti quien haga pasar a su hijo o a su hija por el fuego, ni quien practique adivinación, ni agorero, ni sortílego, ni hechicero, ^18:11ni encantador, ni adivino, ni espiritista, ni quien consulte a los muertos: ^18:12porque es abominación a Jehová cualquiera que hace estas cosas, y por estas abominaciones Jehová tu Dios las echa de delante de ti.

^18:13Perfecto serás para con Jehová tu Dios: ^18:14porque estas naciones que has de heredar, escuchan a agoreros y a adivinos; pero en cuanto a ti, Jehová tu Dios no te ha permitido eso.

^18:15Jehová tu Dios te levantará un Profeta desde el medio de ti, de tus hermanos, como yo. Escucharás a él, ^18:16conforme a todo lo que pediste a Jehová tu Dios en Horeb el día de la asamblea, diciendo, ‘No me dejes oír de nuevo la voz de Jehová mi Dios; ni me dejes ver este gran fuego nunca más, para que no muera’. ^18:17Y Jehová me dijo, ‘Han hablado bien en lo que han dicho. ^18:18Les levantaré un Profeta de entre sus hermanos, como tú; y pondré mis palabras en su boca, y él les hablará todo lo que yo le mandaré. ^18:19Y sucederá que a cualquiera que no escuche mis palabras de que hablará en mi Nombre, lo requeriré desde él.

^18:20Pero el profeta que tenga la presunción de hablar palabra en mi Nombre que yo no le haya mandado hablar, o que hable en Nombre de dioses ajenos, el tal profeta morirá’.

^18:21Y si dices en tu corazón, ‘¿Cómo conoceremos la palabra que Jehová no ha hablado?’ ^18:22Cuando un profeta hable en el Nombre de Jehová, y no acontece tal cosa, ni se cumple, es palabra que Jehová no ha hablado; con presunción la habló el tal profeta; no tengas temor de él.

¶El complemento   Los jueces castigarán severamente a los testigos falsos (19:1 - 21)

^19:1Cuando Jehová tu Dios cortare a las naciones cuya tierra Jehová tu Dios te da a ti, y tú las heredares, y habitares en sus ciudades y en sus casas; ^19:2te apartarás tres ciudades en medio de tu tierra que Jehová tu Dios te da para que la poseas. ^19:3Te arreglarás el camino, y dividirás en tres partes el término de tu tierra, que Jehová tu Dios te dará en heredad, y será para que todo homicida huya allí. ^19:4Y éste es el caso del homicida que ha de huir allí para salvar su vida; el que hiriere a su prójimo por yerro, al cual no le tenía aversión previamente. ^19:5Como el que fue con su prójimo al monte a cortar leña, y poniendo fuerza con su mano en el hacha para cortar algún leño, saltó el hierro del cabo, y encontró a su prójimo, y murió; aquél huirá a una de estas ciudades, y vivirá; ^19:6no sea que el pariente del muerto vaya tras el homicida, cuando se enardeciere su corazón, y le alcance por ser largo el camino, y le hiera de muerte, no debiendo ser condenado a muerte; por cuanto no tenía enemistad con su prójimo previamente. ^19:7Por tanto yo te mando, diciendo, ‘Tres ciudades te apartarás’. ^19:8Y si Jehová tu Dios ensanchare tu territorio, como lo juró a tus padres, y te diere toda la tierra que prometió dar a tus padres; ^19:9y guardares todos estos Mandamientos, que yo te prescribo hoy, para ponerlos por obra; que ames a Jehová tu Dios y andes en sus caminos todos los días, entonces añadirás tres ciudades a más de estas tres; ^19:10para que no sea derramada sangre inocente en medio de tu tierra que Jehová tu Dios te da por heredad, y sea sobre ti sangre. ^19:11Pero cuando hubiere alguno que aborreciere a su prójimo, y lo acechare, y se levantare sobre él, y lo hiriere de muerte, y muriere, y huyere a alguna de estas ciudades; ^19:12entonces los Ancianos de su ciudad enviarán y lo sacarán de allí, y lo entregarán en mano del pariente del muerto, y morirá. ^19:13No le perdonará tu ojo; y quitarás de Israel la sangre inocente, y te irá bien.

^19:14No reducirás el término de tu prójimo, el cual señalaron los antiguos en tu heredad, la que poseyeres en la tierra que Jehová tu Dios te da para que la poseas.

^19:15No valdrá un solo testigo contra ninguno en cualquier delito ni en cualquier pecado, en cualquier pecado que se cometiere. En el testimonio de dos testigos, o en el testimonio de tres testigos consistirá el asunto.

^19:16Cuando se levantare testigo falso contra alguno, para testificar alguna transgresión contra él, ^19:17entonces los dos hombres litigantes se presentarán delante de Jehová, delante de los sacerdotes y jueces que fueren en aquellos días. ^19:18Y los jueces inquirirán bien, y si aquel testigo resultare falso, y que testificó falsamente contra su hermano, ^19:19entonces haréis a él como él pensó hacer a su hermano; y quitarás el mal de en medio de ti. ^19:20Y los que quedaren oirán, y temerán, y no volverán más a hacer una mala cosa como ésta, en medio de ti.

^19:21Y no perdonará tu ojo; vida por vida, ojo por ojo, diente por diente, mano por mano, pie por pie.
