Deuteronomy, Chapter 1.5: Do not forget the mercy that Jehovah your God extended to you in spite of your rebellion (9:1 - 11:32)

Introduction: It was only the grace of Jehovah that saved Israel from destruction at Mount Sinai (9:1 - 29)

¶Opposite   Jehovah would drive out the Canaanites before Israel because of their wickedness, not because of Israel's righteousness (9:1 - 7)

¶Opposite   Moses protected Israel from the wrath of Jehovah, because of their idolatry (9:8 - 29)

Body: Jehovah forgave Israel and restored them to his favor (10:1 - 11:1)

¶Unique   Moses cut two more tablets of stone to replace the stones he had destroyed (10:1 - 5)

¶Complement   Aaron died and was buried on the way to the Promised Land because of his sin (10:6 - 7)

¶Complement   And Jehovah separated the tribe of Levi to minister to Him (10:8 - 9)

¶Opposite   But Moses persuaded Jehovah to have mercy on the people of Israel and not to destroy them (10:10 - 11)

¶Opposite   Therefore fear Jehovah and walk in his ways with all your heart and all your soul (10:12 - 11:1)

Conclusion: Israel must choose between the blessing of Jehovah or the curse of Jehovah (11:2 - 32)

¶Complement   There was a curse behind Israel, but a blessing in front of Israel, if they diligently obeyed the Commandments (11:2 - 17)

^9:1Hear, O Israel: this day you are to pass over Jordan, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to heaven; ^9:2a people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom you know, and of whom you have heard it said, ‘Who can stand before the children of Anak!’ ^9:3Therefore understand this day, that Jehovah your God is he who is going over before you. As a consuming fire shall he destroy them; and he shall bring them down before your face. So shall you drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as Jehovah has said to you.

^9:4Speak not in your heart, after that Jehovah your God has cast them out from before you, saying, ‘For my righteousness Jehovah has brought me in to possess this land’; but rather for the wickedness of these nations Jehovah is driving them out from before you.

^9:5Not for your righteousness, nor for the uprightness of your heart, do you go to possess their land; but for the wickedness of these nations Jehovah your God is driving them out from before you, that he may perform the Word which Jehovah swore to your fathers: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

^9:6Therefore understand, that Jehovah your God does not give you this good land to possess it for your own righteousness: for you are a stiff-necked people.

^9:7Remember and do not forget, how you provoked Jehovah your God to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that you departed from the land of Egypt, until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against Jehovah.

¶Opposite   Moses protected Israel from the wrath of Jehovah, because of their idolatry (9:8 - 29)

^9:8Also in Horeb you provoked Jehovah to wrath, so that Jehovah was angry with you to have destroyed you. ^9:9When I went up into the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, even the tablets of the Covenant which Jehovah made with you, then I stayed in the mountain forty days and forty nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water. ^9:10And Jehovah delivered to me two tablets of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which Jehovah spoke with you in the mountain out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly.

^9:11And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that Jehovah gave me the two tablets of stone, even the tablets of the Covenant. ^9:12And Jehovah said to me, ‘Arise; go down quickly from here: for your people that you brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted themselves; they have quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them: for they have made themselves a molten image.’ ^9:13Furthermore Jehovah spoke to me, saying, ‘I have seen this people; and, behold, it is a stiff-necked people. ^9:14Let me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven; and I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they!’

^9:15So I turned and came down from the mountain, and the mountain burned with fire; and the two tablets of the Covenant were in my two hands. ^9:16And I looked; and, behold, you had sinned against Jehovah your God, and had made you a molten calf; you had turned aside quickly out of the way that Jehovah had commanded you. ^9:17And I took the two tablets, and cast them out of my two hands, and broke them before your eyes. ^9:18And I fell down before Jehovah, as at the first, forty days and forty nights; I neither ate bread, nor drank water, because of all your sins which you sinned, in doing wickedly in the sight of Jehovah, to provoke him to anger: ^9:19for I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure, with which Jehovah was furious against you to destroy you. But Jehovah listened to me at that time also. ^9:20And Jehovah was very angry with Aaron to have destroyed him; and I prayed for Aaron also the same time. ^9:21And I took your sin, the calf which you had made, and burned it with fire, and stamped it, and ground it very small, even until it was as small as dust; and I cast its dust into the brook that descended out of the mountain. ^9:22And at Taberah, at Massah, and at Kibroth-hattaavah, you provoked Jehovah to wrath.

^9:23Likewise when Jehovah sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, ‘Go up and possess the land which I have given you’, then you rebelled against the command of Jehovah your God, and you did not believe him, nor listen to his voice. ^9:24You have been rebellious against Jehovah from the day that I knew you.

^9:25Thus I fell down before Jehovah forty days and forty nights, as I fell down the first time, because Jehovah had said he would destroy you. ^9:26Therefore I prayed to Jehovah, and said, ‘O Lord Jehovah, do not destroy your people and your inheritance, which you have redeemed through your greatness, which you have brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand. ^9:27Remember your servants; Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; look not to the stubbornness of this people, nor to their wickedness, nor to their sin, ^9:28lest the land from where you brought us out says, ‘Because Jehovah was not able to bring them into the land which he promised them, and because he hated them, he has brought them out to slay them in the wilderness.’ ^9:29Yet they are your people and your inheritance, which you brought out by your mighty power and by your stretched out arm.’

§Complement   Body: Jehovah forgave Israel and restored them to his favor (10:1 - 11:1)

^10:1At that time Jehovah said to me, ‘Cut two tablets of stone like the first, and come up to me into the mountain, and make you an Ark of wood. ^10:2And I will write on the tablets the words that were in the first tablets that you broke, and you shall put them in the Ark.’ ^10:3And I made an Ark of acacia wood, and cut two tablets of stone like the first, and went up into the mountain, having the two tablets in my hand. ^10:4And he wrote on the tablets, according to the first writing, the Ten Commandments, which Jehovah spoke to you in the mountain out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly; and Jehovah gave them to me. ^10:5And I turned myself and came down from the mountain. And I put the tablets in the Ark that I had made; and there they are, as Jehovah commanded me.

^10:6And the children of Israel took their journey from Beeroth of the children of Jaakan to Mosera; there Aaron died, and there he was buried; and Eleazar his son ministered in the priest's office in his place. ^10:7From there they journeyed to Gudgodah; and from Gudgodah to Jotbath, a land of rivers of water.

^10:8At that time Jehovah separated the tribe of Levi, to carry the Ark of the Covenant of Jehovah, to stand before Jehovah to minister to him, and to bless in his Name, until this day. ^10:9Therefore Levi has no part nor inheritance with his brethren; Jehovah is his inheritance, according as Jehovah your God promised him.

^10:10And I stayed in the mountain, according to the first time, forty days and forty nights; and Jehovah listened to me at that time also, and Jehovah would not destroy you. ^10:11And Jehovah said to me, ‘Arise, take your journey before the people, that they may go in and possess the land, which I swore to their fathers to give them.’

^10:12And now, Israel, what does Jehovah your God require of you, but to fear Jehovah your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, and to serve Jehovah your God with all your heart and with all your soul, ^10:13to keep the Commandments of Jehovah, and his Statutes, which I command you this day for your good? ^10:14Behold, the heaven and the Heaven of heavens is Jehovah your God's, the earth also, with all that is in it. ^10:15Only Jehovah had a delight in your fathers to love them; and he chose their seed after them, even you above all people, as it is this day. ^10:16Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no longer stiff-necked: ^10:17for Jehovah your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords: a great God, a mighty and a dreadful, who does not respect persons, nor take a bribe. ^10:18He executes the judgment of the fatherless and widow; and he loves the stranger, in giving him food and clothing. ^10:19Therefore love the stranger: for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. ^10:20You shall fear Jehovah your God: him shall you serve; and to him shall you be faithful, and swear by his Name. ^10:21He is your praise, and he is your God, that has done for you these great and dreadful things, which your eyes have seen. ^10:22Your fathers went down into Egypt with seventy people; and now Jehovah your God has made you as the stars of heaven for multitude. ^11:1Therefore you shall love Jehovah your God, and keep his charge, his Statutes, his Judgments, and his Commandments, always.

^11:2And know this day: for I do not speak with your children which have not known, and which have not seen the discipline of Jehovah your God, his greatness, his mighty hand, his stretched out arm, ^11:3his miracles, and his acts, which he did in the midst of Egypt to Pharaoh the king of Egypt, and to all his land; ^11:4and what he did to the army of Egypt, to their horses, and to their chariots: how he made the water of the Red sea to overflow them as they pursued after you, and how Jehovah has destroyed them until this day; ^11:5and what he did to you in the wilderness, until you came into this place; ^11:6and what he did to Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, the son of Reuben: how the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and their tents, and all the substance that was in their possession, in the midst of all Israel;

^11:7but your eyes have seen all the great acts of Jehovah which he did.

^11:8Therefore you shall keep all the Commandments which I command you this day, that you may be strong, and go in and possess the land, where you are going to possess it; ^11:9and so you may prolong your days in the land, which Jehovah swore to your fathers to give to them and to their seed, a land that flows with milk and honey. ^11:10For the land, where you are going in to possess it, is not as the land of Egypt, the place where you came from (where you sowed your seed, and watered it with your foot, as a garden of herbs); ^11:11but the land, where you are going to possess it, is a land of hills and valleys, and drinks water of the rain of heaven. ^11:12It is a land which Jehovah your God cares for: the eyes of Jehovah your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even to the end of the year.

^11:13‘And it shall come to pass, if you shall diligently pay attention to my Commandments which I command you this day, to love Jehovah your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul, ^11:14that I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that you may gather in your grain, your wine, and your oil. ^11:15And I will send grass in your fields for your cattle, that you may eat and be full.’

^11:16Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and you turn aside, and serve other gods and worship them; ^11:17and then Jehovah's wrath is kindled against you, and he shuts up the heaven, so that there is no rain, and that the land does not yield her fruit; and you perish quickly from off the good land which Jehovah is giving you.

^11:18Therefore you shall lay up these my words in your heart, and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. ^11:19And you shall teach them your children: speaking of them, when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. ^11:20And you shall write them upon the doorposts of your house, and upon your gates, ^11:21that your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which Jehovah swore to your fathers to give them, as the days of Heaven upon the earth.

^11:22For if you shall diligently keep all these Commandments which I command you (to do them, to love Jehovah your God, to walk in all his ways, and to be faithful to him), ^11:23then will Jehovah drive out all these nations from before you, and you shall possess greater nations and mightier than yourselves. ^11:24Every place whereon the soles of your feet shall tread shall be yours: from the wilderness and Lebanon, from the river, the river Euphrates, even to the uttermost sea shall your border be. ^11:25No man shall be able to stand before you: for Jehovah your God shall lay the fear of you and the dread of you upon all the land that you shall tread upon, as he has said to you.

^11:26Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse: ^11:27a blessing, if you obey the Commandments of Jehovah your God, which I command you this day; ^11:28and a curse, if you will not obey the Commandments of Jehovah your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which you have not known.

^11:29And it shall come to pass, when Jehovah your God has brought you in to the land where you are going to possess it, that you shall put the blessing upon Mount Gerizim, and the curse upon Mount Ebal. ^11:30Are they not on the other side of Jordan, by the way where the sun goes down, in the land of the Canaanites, who dwell in the desert next to Gilgal, beside the plains of Moreh?

^11:31For you shall pass over Jordan to go in to possess the land that Jehovah your God is giving you, and you shall possess it, and dwell in it. ^11:32And you shall observe to do all the Statutes and Judgments that I set before you this day.

^9:15Y volví y descendí del monte, el cual ardía en fuego, con las tablas del Pacto en mis dos manos. ^9:16Y miré, y he aquí habíais pecado contra Jehová vuestro Dios; os habíais hecho un becerro de fundición, apartándoos pronto del camino que Jehová os había mandado. ^9:17Entonces tomé las dos tablas, y las arrojé de mis dos manos, y las quebré delante de vuestros ojos. ^9:18Y me postré delante de Jehová, como antes, cuarenta días y cuarenta noches; no comí pan ni bebí agua, a causa de todo vuestro pecado que habíais cometido haciendo mal en ojos de Jehová para enojarlo: ^9:19porque temí a causa del furor y de la ira con que Jehová estaba enojado contra ustedes para destruiros. Pero Jehová me escuchó también esta vez. ^9:20Contra Aarón también se enojó Jehová en gran manera para destruirlo; y también oré por Aarón entonces. ^9:21Y tomé vuestro pecado, el becerro que habíais hecho, y lo quemé en el fuego, y lo desmenucé moliéndolo muy bien, hasta que fue reducido a polvo; y eché el polvo de él en el arroyo que descendía del monte. ^9:22También en Tabera, y en Masah, y en Kibrot-hataava, enojasteis a Jehová.

^9:23Y también cuando Jehová os envió desde Cades-barnea, diciendo, ‘Subid y poseed la tierra que yo os he dado’, también fuisteis rebeldes al mandato de Jehová vuestro Dios, y no le creísteis, ni obedecisteis a su voz. ^9:24Rebeldes habéis sido a Jehová desde el día que yo os conozco.

^9:25Me postré, pues, delante de Jehová cuarenta días y cuarenta noches (como me había postrado antes) porque Jehová dijo que os había de destruir. ^9:26Y oré a Jehová, diciendo, ‘Oh Señor Jehová, no destruyas a tu pueblo y a tu heredad que has redimido con tu grandeza, que sacaste de Egipto con mano fuerte. ^9:27Acuérdate de tus siervos: Abraham, Isaac, y Jacob; no mires a la dureza de este pueblo, ni a su impiedad, ni a su pecado; ^9:28no sea que digan los de la tierra de donde nos sacaste, ‘Por cuanto no pudo Jehová introducirlos en la tierra que les había dicho, o porque los aborrecía, los sacó para matarlos en el desierto’. ^9:29Y son tu pueblo y tu heredad, que sacaste con tu gran fortaleza y con tu brazo extendido’.

§El complemento   Cuerpo: Jehová perdonó a Israel y los restauró a su favor (10:1 - 11:1)

^10:1En aquel tiempo Jehová me dijo, ‘Lábrate dos tablas de piedra como las primeras, y sube a mí al monte, y hazte un Arca de madera; ^10:2y escribiré en aquellas tablas palabras que estaban en las tablas primeras que quebraste; y las pondrás en el Arca’. ^10:3E hice un arca de madera de acacia, y labré dos tablas de piedra como las primeras, y subí al monte con las dos tablas en mi mano. ^10:4Y escribió en las tablas conforme a la primera escritura, los diez Mandamientos que Jehová os había hablado en el monte de en medio del fuego, el día de la asamblea; y me las dio Jehová. ^10:5Y volví y descendí del monte, y puse las tablas en el arca que había hecho; y allí están, como Jehová me mandó.

^10:6Después partieron los hijos de Israel de Beerot-bene-jaacán a Moserá; allí murió Aarón, y allí fue sepultado; y en lugar suyo tuvo el sacerdocio su hijo Eleazar. ^10:7De allí partieron a Gudgod, y de Gudgod a Jotbata, tierra de arroyos de aguas.

^10:8En aquel tiempo apartó Jehová la tribu de Leví, para que llevase el arca del Pacto de Jehová, para que estuviese delante de Jehová para servirle, y para bendecir en su Nombre, hasta hoy. ^10:9Por lo cual Leví no tuvo parte ni heredad con sus hermanos; Jehová es su heredad, como Jehová tu Dios le dijo.

^11:2Y comprended hoy: porque no hablo con vuestros hijos que no han sabido ni visto el castigo de Jehová vuestro Dios, su grandeza, su mano fuerte, y su brazo extendido, ^11:3y sus señales, y sus obras que hizo en medio de Egipto a Faraón, rey de Egipto, y a toda su tierra; ^11:4y lo que hizo al ejército de Egipto, a sus caballos y a sus carros; cómo hizo que las aguas del Mar Rojo cayeran sobre ellos cuando venían tras ustedes, y Jehová los destruyó hasta hoy; ^11:5y lo que ha hecho con ustedes en el desierto, hasta que habéis llegado a este lugar; ^11:6y lo que hizo con Datán y Abiram, hijos de Eliab hijo de Rubén; cómo abrió la tierra su boca, y se tragó a ellos y a sus casas, y sus tiendas, y toda la hacienda que tenían en pie en medio de todo Israel.

^11:7Pero vuestros ojos han visto todos los grandes hechos que Jehová ha ejecutado.

^11:8Guardad, pues, todos los Mandamientos que yo os prescribo hoy, para que seáis fortalecidos, y entréis y poseáis la tierra, a la cual pasáis para poseerla; ^11:9y para que os sean prolongados los días sobre la tierra, que juró Jehová a vuestros padres, que había de darla a ellos y a su simiente, tierra que fluye leche y miel. ^11:10Que la tierra a la cual entras para poseerla, no es como la tierra de Egipto de donde habéis salido, donde sembrabas tu simiente, y regabas con tu pie, como huerto de hortaliza. ^11:11La tierra a la cual pasáis para poseerla, es tierra de montes y de vegas; que bebe el agua de la lluvia del cielo; ^11:12tierra de la cual Jehová tu Dios cuida; siempre están sobre ella los ojos de Jehová tu Dios, desde el principio del año hasta el fin del año.

^11:13‘Y será que, si obedeciereis cuidadosamente mis Mandamientos que yo os prescribo hoy, amando a Jehová vuestro Dios, y sirviéndole con todo vuestro corazón, y con toda vuestra alma, ^11:14yo daré la lluvia de vuestra tierra en su tiempo, la temprana y la tardía; y recogerás tu grano, y tu vino, y tu aceite. ^11:15Daré también hierba en tu campo para tus bestias; y comerás, y te saciarás’.

^11:16Guardaos, pues, que vuestro corazón no se infatúe, y os apartéis, y sirváis a dioses ajenos, y os inclinéis a ellos; ^11:17y así se encienda el furor de Jehová sobre ustedes, y cierre los cielos, y no haya lluvia, ni la tierra dé su fruto, y perezcáis pronto de la buena tierra que os da Jehová.

¶El complemento   Israel debe poner la bendición en el Monte Gerizim y la maldición en el Monte Ebal después de haber entrado Canaán (11:18 - 32)

^11:18Por tanto, pondréis estas mis palabras en vuestro corazón y en vuestra alma, y las ataréis por señal en vuestra mano, y serán por frontales entre vuestros ojos. ^11:19Y las enseñaréis a vuestros hijos, hablando de ellas, cuando estés sentado en tu casa, y cuando andes por el camino; cuando te acuestes, y cuando te levantes; ^11:20y las escribirás en los postes de tu casa, y en tus puertas; ^11:21para que sean aumentados vuestros días, y los días de vuestros hijos, sobre la tierra que juró Jehová a vuestros padres que les había de dar, como los días de los Cielos sobre la tierra.

^11:22Porque si guardareis cuidadosamente todos estos Mandamientos que yo os prescribo, para que los cumpláis; y si amareis a Jehová vuestro Dios andando en todos sus caminos, y siguiéndole a él, ^11:23Jehová también echará a todas estas naciones de delante de ustedes y poseeréis naciones grandes y más fuertes que ustedes. ^11:24Todo lugar que pisare la planta de vuestro pie, será vuestro; desde el desierto y el Líbano, desde el río, el río Éufrates, hasta el mar postrero será vuestro término. ^11:25Nadie se sostendrá delante de ustedes; miedo y temor de ustedes pondrá Jehová vuestro Dios sobre la faz de toda la tierra que hollareis, como él os ha dicho.

^11:26He aquí yo pongo hoy delante de ustedes la bendición y la maldición: ^11:27la bendición, si obedeciereis los Mandamientos de Jehová vuestro Dios, que yo os prescribo hoy; ^11:28y la maldición, si no obedeciereis los Mandamientos de Jehová vuestro Dios, y os apartareis del camino que yo os ordeno hoy, para ir en pos de dioses ajenos que no habéis conocido.

^11:29Y será que, cuando Jehová tu Dios te introdujere en la tierra a la cual vas para poseerla, pondrás la bendición sobre el monte Gerizim, y la maldición sobre el monte Ebal. ^11:30¿No están éstos al otro lado del Jordán, hacia donde se pone el sol, en la tierra de los cananeos, que habitan el Arabá, frente a Gilgal, junto a la llanura de Moreh?

^11:31Porque ustedes pasáis el Jordán, para ir a poseer la tierra que os da Jehová vuestro Dios; y la poseeréis, y habitaréis en ella. ^11:32Cuidaréis, pues, de poner por obra todos los Estatutos y Derechos que yo presento hoy delante de ustedes.
