Deuteronomy, Chapter 1.3: Do not forget the Covenant that Jehovah your God made with you at Mount Sinai (4:1 - 43)

Introduction: Do the Statutes and Judgments and live, because they came directly from the one true God Jehovah (4:1 - 14)

¶Opposite   Do the Statutes and Judgments of Jehovah that you might live (4:1 - 6)

¶Opposite   Jehovah declared his Covenant with Israel out of the midst of the fire (4:7 - 14)

Body: Be careful lest you corrupt yourselves by worshiping idols and the stars of the heaven (4:15 - 22)

¶Unique   Therefore take good heed to yourselves: for you saw no form on the day that Jehovah spoke to you in Horeb (4:15)

¶Complement   lest you corrupt yourselves, and make for yourselves a carved idol for worship (4:16 - 18)

¶Complement   lest you lift up your eyes to heaven and be driven to worship the stars and the host of heaven (4:19)

¶Opposite   But Jehovah has taken you to be a people of inheritance to Him (4:20)

¶Opposite   But Jehovah was angry with me for your sakes (4:21 - 22)

Conclusion: The one true God, Jehovah, revealed Himself to Israel; therefore keep his Commandments (4:23 - 43)

^4:1Now therefore listen carefully, O Israel, to the Statutes and to the Judgments, which I teach you, for you to do them; that you may live, and go in and possess the land that Jehovah God of your fathers is giving you. ^4:2You shall not add to the Word which I command you; neither shall you diminish anything from it, that you may keep the Commandments of Jehovah your God which I command you.

^4:3Your eyes have seen what Jehovah did because of Baal-peor: for all the men that followed Baal-peor, Jehovah your God has destroyed them from among you.

^4:4But you that held fast to Jehovah your God are alive every one of you this day.

^4:5Behold, I have taught you Statutes and Judgments, even as Jehovah my God commanded me, that you should do so in the land where you are going to possess it.

^4:6Therefore keep, and do them: for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, who shall hear all these Statutes, and say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’

^4:7For what other nation is there so great, which has the true God so near to them, as Jehovah our God is in all things that we call upon him for? ^4:8And what other nation is there so great, that has Statutes and Judgments so righteous as all this Law, which I set before you this day?

^4:9Only take heed to yourself, and protect your soul diligently; lest you forget the things which your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart, all the days of your life; but teach them your sons, and your grandsons.

^4:10Especially the day that you stood before Jehovah your God in Horeb, when Jehovah said to me, ‘Gather me the people together; and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.’

^4:11And you came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire into the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness. ^4:12And Jehovah spoke to you out of the midst of the fire. You heard the voice of the words, but saw no form; you heard only a voice. ^4:13And he declared his Covenant to you, which he commanded you to perform, even Ten Commandments; and he wrote them on two tablets of stone.

^4:14And Jehovah commanded me at that time to teach you Statutes and Judgments, that you might do them in the land, where you are going over Jordan to possess it.

§Complement   Body: Be careful lest you corrupt yourselves by worshiping idols and the stars of the heaven (4:15 - 22)

^4:15Therefore take good heed to yourselves: for you saw no form on the day that Jehovah spoke to you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire;

^4:16lest you corrupt yourselves, and make yourself a carved image: the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female, ^4:17the likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the air, ^4:18the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, or the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth;

^4:19and lest you lift up your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun, the moon, and the stars, even all the constellations, you should be driven to worship them, and serve them, which Jehovah your God has divided to all nations under the whole heaven.

^4:20But Jehovah has taken you; and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be a people of inheritance unto him, as you are this day.

^4:21Furthermore, Jehovah was angry with me for your sakes; and he swore that I would not go over Jordan; and that I would not go into that good land, which Jehovah your God is giving you for an inheritance. ^4:22For I am dying in this land; I must not go over Jordan; but you shall go over, and possess that good land.

§Complement   Conclusion: Jehovah is the one true God; therefore keep his Commandments (4:23 - 43)

^4:23Take heed to yourselves, lest you forget the Covenant of Jehovah your God, which he made with you, and make you a carved image, or the likeness of any thing, which Jehovah your God has forbidden you: ^4:24for Jehovah your God is a consuming fire, a Jealous God. ^4:25When you shall beget children and grandchildren, and you shall have remained long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make a carved image, or the likeness of any thing, and shall do evil in the sight of Jehovah your God, to provoke him to anger, ^4:26I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that you shall soon utterly perish from off the land where you are going over Jordan to possess it. You shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall be utterly destroyed. ^4:27And Jehovah shall scatter you among the nations, and you shall be left few in number among the heathen, where Jehovah shall lead you. ^4:28And there shall you serve false gods: the work of men's hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.

^4:29But if from there you shall seek Jehovah your God, you shall find him, if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul. ^4:30When you are in tribulation, and all these things have come upon you, even in the Latter Days, if you turn to Jehovah your God, and shall be obedient to his voice ^4:31(for Jehovah your God is a merciful God), he will not forsake you; neither destroy you, nor forget the Covenant of your fathers which he swore to them.

^4:32For ask now of the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and ask from the one side of heaven to the other, whether there has been any such thing as this great thing is, or has been heard like it?

^4:33Did any people ever hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and live?

^4:34Or has God ever tried to go and take himself a nation from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, by war, by a mighty hand, by a stretched out arm, and by great terrors, according to all that Jehovah your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?

¶Complement   Jehovah is the one true God; therefore keep his Commandments that it may go well with you and your children (4:35 - 43)

^4:35Unto you it was shown, that you might know that Jehovah, he is the true God; there is no other beside him. ^4:36From the Heavens, he made you to hear his voice, that he might instruct you. And upon earth he showed you his great fire; and you heard his words out of the midst of the fire.

^4:37And because he loved your fathers; therefore he chose their seed after them, and brought you out in his sight with his mighty power out of Egypt; ^4:38to drive out greater and mightier nations than you from before you; to bring you in, and give you their land for an inheritance, as it is this day.

^4:39Know therefore this day, and consider it in your heart, that Jehovah, he is the true God in Heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is no other God.

^4:40Therefore, you shall keep his Statutes and his Commandments, which I command you this day; that it may go well with you, and with your children after you; and that you may prolong your days upon the land, which Jehovah your God is giving you forever.”

^4:41Then Moses designated three cities on this side of Jordan toward the sunrise, ^4:42that the slayer might flee there who should kill his neighbor accidentally, and did not hate him in times past; and that fleeing to one of these cities he might live: ^4:43namely, Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain country, of the Reubenites; and Ramoth in Gilead, of the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, of the Manassites.

^4:4Pero ustedes que os aferrasteis a Jehová vuestro Dios, todos estáis vivos hoy.

^4:5Mirad, yo os he enseñado Estatutos y Derechos tal como Jehová mi Dios me mandó, para que hagáis así en medio de la tierra en la cual entráis para poseerla.

^4:6Guardadlos, pues, y ponedlos por obra: porque ésta es vuestra sabiduría y vuestra inteligencia ante los ojos de los pueblos, los cuales oirán todos estos Estatutos, y dirán, ‘Ciertamente pueblo sabio y entendido, nación grande es ésta’.

^4:7Porque ¿qué nación grande hay que tenga a Dios tan cerca a sí, como lo está Jehová nuestro Dios en todo cuanto le pedimos? ^4:8¿Y qué nación grande hay que tenga Estatutos y Derechos tan justos como toda esta Ley que hoy pongo delante de ustedes?

^4:9Por tanto, guárdate, y guarda tu alma con diligencia, que no te olvides de las cosas que tus ojos han visto, y no se aparten de tu corazón todos los días de tu vida; antes bien, las enseñarás a tus hijos, y a los hijos de tus hijos.

^4:10Especialmente el día que estuviste delante de Jehová tu Dios en Horeb, cuando Jehová me dijo, ‘Reúneme el pueblo, para que yo les haga oír mis palabras, las cuales aprenderán, para temerme todos los días que vivieren sobre la tierra: y las enseñarán a sus hijos’.

^4:11Y os acercasteis, y os pusisteis al pie del monte; y el monte ardía en fuego hasta en medio de los cielos con tinieblas, nube, y oscuridad. ^4:12Y Jehová habló con ustedes de en medio del fuego; oísteis la voz de sus palabras, pero a excepción de oír la voz, ninguna figura visteis. ^4:13Y él os anunció su Pacto, el cual os mandó poner por obra, los diez Mandamientos; y los escribió en dos tablas de piedra.

^4:14A mí también me mandó Jehová en aquel tiempo a enseñaros los Estatutos y Derechos, para que los pusieseis por obra en la tierra a la cual pasáis para poseerla.

^4:15Guardad, pues, mucho vuestras almas: pues ninguna figura visteis el día que Jehová habló con ustedes de en medio del fuego;

^4:16para que no os corrompáis, y hagáis para ustedes escultura, imagen de figura alguna, efigie de varón o hembra, ^4:17figura de algún animal que sea en la tierra, figura de ave alguna alada que vuele por el aire, ^4:18figura de ningún animal que vaya arrastrando por la tierra, figura de pez alguno que haya en el agua debajo de la tierra.

^4:19No sea que alzando tus ojos al cielo, y viendo el sol y la luna y las estrellas, y todo el ejército del cielo, seas incitado, y te inclines a ellos, y les sirvas: porque Jehová tu Dios los ha concedido a todos los pueblos debajo de todos los cielos.

^4:20Pero a ustedes Jehová os tomó, y os ha sacado del horno de hierro, de Egipto, para que le seáis por pueblo, por heredad, como en este día.

^4:21Y Jehová se enojó contra mí por causa de ustedes, y juró que yo no pasaría el Jordán, ni entraría en la buena tierra, que Jehová tu Dios te da por heredad. ^4:22Así que yo voy a morir en esta tierra, y no cruzaré el Jordán; pero ustedes pasaréis y poseeréis aquella buena tierra.

^4:23Guardaos, no sea que olvidéis el Pacto de Jehová vuestro Dios, que él estableció con ustedes, y os hagáis escultura o imagen de cualquier cosa, que Jehová tu Dios te ha prohibido: ^4:24porque Jehová tu Dios es fuego consumidor, Dios Celoso. ^4:25Cuando hubiereis engendrado hijos y nietos, y hubiereis envejecido en la tierra, y os corrompiereis, e hiciereis escultura o imagen de cualquier cosa, e hiciereis lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová vuestro Dios, para enojarlo; ^4:26yo pongo hoy por testigos al cielo y a la tierra, que presto pereceréis totalmente de la tierra hacia la cual pasáis el Jordán para poseerla: no estaréis en ella largos días sin que seáis totalmente destruidos. ^4:27Y Jehová os esparcirá entre los pueblos, y quedaréis pocos en número entre las naciones a las cuales os llevará Jehová. ^4:28Y serviréis allí a dioses hechos de manos de hombres, de madera y de piedra, que no ven, ni oyen, ni comen, ni huelen.

^4:29Pero si desde allí buscares a Jehová tu Dios, lo hallarás, si lo buscares con todo tu corazón y con toda tu alma. ^4:30Cuando estuviereis en angustia, y te alcanzaren todas estas cosas, si en los postreros días te volvieres a Jehová tu Dios, y oyeres su voz; ^4:31(porque Jehová tu Dios es Dios misericordioso), él no te abandonará, ni te destruirá, ni se olvidará del Pacto que juró a tus padres.

^4:32Pues pregunta ahora acerca de los tiempos pasados que fueron antes de ti, desde el día en que Dios creó al hombre sobre la tierra, y desde un extremo del cielo hasta el otro, si se ha hecho cosa tan grande como ésta, o se ha oído algo como esto.

^4:33¿Ha oído pueblo alguno la voz de Dios, hablando de en medio del fuego, como tú la has oído, y ha sobrevivido?

^4:34¿O ha intentado Dios venir a tomar para sí una nación de en medio de otra nación, con pruebas, con señales, con milagros y con guerra, y mano fuerte y brazo extendido, y grandes terrores, como todo lo que hizo con ustedes Jehová vuestro Dios en Egipto ante tus ojos?

¶El complemento   Jehová es el único Dios verdadero; por lo tanto, guardad sus mandamientos, para que ello pueda ir bien con ustedes y sus hijos (4:35 - 43)

^4:35A ti te fue mostrado, para que supieses que Jehová, él es Dios; no hay otro fuera de él. ^4:36Desde el Cielo te hizo oír su voz, para enseñarte; y sobre la tierra te mostró su gran fuego, y has oído sus palabras de en medio del fuego.

^4:37Y porque él amó a tus padres, escogió a su simiente después de ellos, y te sacó delante de sí de Egipto con su gran poder; ^4:38para echar de delante de ti naciones grandes y más fuertes que tú, y para introducirte, y darte su tierra por heredad, como hoy.

^4:39Reconoce pues, hoy, y reconsidera en tu corazón que Jehová, él es Dios arriba en el Cielo, y abajo sobre la tierra; no hay otro.

^4:40Y guarda sus Estatutos y sus Mandamientos que yo te mando hoy, para que te vaya bien a ti y a tus hijos después de ti, y prolongues tus días sobre la tierra que Jehová tu Dios te da para siempre”.

^4:41Entonces apartó Moisés tres ciudades de este lado del Jordán al nacimiento del sol, ^4:42para que huyese allí el homicida que matase a su prójimo por yerro, sin haber tenido enemistad con él en el pasado; y que huyendo a una de estas ciudades salvase su vida; ^4:43a Beser en el desierto, en tierra de la llanura, de los rubenitas; y a Ramot en Galaad, de los gaditas; y a Golán en Basán, de los de Manasés.
