Deuteronomy, Chapter 1.1: Remember how your fathers rebelled against Jehovah at Kadesh-Barnea (1:1 - 46)

Introduction: The journey to Kadesh-Barnea started well (1:1 - 18)

¶Opposite   Jehovah commanded Israel to go to Canaan and possess it (1:1 - 8)

¶Opposite   Moses charged the new judges over the people with their responsibilities before God (1:9 - 18)

Body: Jehovah sent the children of Israel to possess the land of Canaan (1:19 - 31)

¶Unique   Moses commanded the children of Israel to go up and possess the land of Canaan (1:19 - 21)

¶Complement   Moses chose 12 men at the suggestion of the people to spy out the land (1:22 - 23)

¶Complement   The twelve spies returned and reported that the land was good (1:24 - 25)

¶Opposite   The people rebelled against the command of Jehovah (1:26 - 28)

¶Opposite   But Moses tried to encourage them (1:29 - 31)

Conclusion: The children of Israel forfeited Jehovah’s blessing upon them by their refusal to obey Him (1:32 - 46)

¶Complement   Jehovah was angry with both Israel and Moses (1:32 - 40)

¶Complement   Jehovah refused to bless Israel as they tried to possess the land of Canaan against his will (1:41 - 46)

§Unique   Introduction: The journey to Kadesh-Barnea started well (1:1 - 18)

¶Opposite   Jehovah commanded Israel to go to Canaan and possess it (1:1 - 8)

^1:1These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel on this side of Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain next to the Red Sea, between Paran, Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab. ^1:2(There are eleven days' journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea.)

^1:3And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spoke to the children of Israel, according to all that Jehovah had given him in commandment to them;

^1:4after he had slain Sihon the king of the Amorites, which dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, which dwelt at Astaroth in Edrei.

^1:5On this side of Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses began to declare this Law, saying, ^1:6“Jehovah our God spoke to us in Horeb, saying, ‘You have dwelt long enough in this mountain. ^1:7Turn, and take your journey, and go to the mountain of the Amorites, and to all the places near to it, in the plain, in the hills, in the vale, in the south, and by the seaside, to the land of the Canaanites, and to Lebanon, to the great river, the river Euphrates.

^1:8Behold, I have set the land before you; go in and possess the land which Jehovah swore to your fathers: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: to give it to them and to their seed after them.’

¶Opposite   Moses charged the new judges over the people with their responsibilities before God (1:9 - 18)

^1:9And I spoke to you at that time, saying, ‘I am not able to carry you myself alone. ^1:10Jehovah your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude. ^1:11Jehovah God of your fathers make you a thousand times as many more as you are, and bless you, as he has promised you! ^1:12How can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, your burden, and your strife? ^1:13Take wise and understanding men, and known among your tribes; and I will make them rulers over you.’ ^1:14And you answered me, and said, ‘The thing that you have spoken is good for us to do.’

^1:15So I took the leaders of your tribes (wise men, and known); and I made them heads over you: captains over thousands, captains over hundreds, captains over fifties, captains over tens, and officers among your tribes.

^1:16And I charged your judges at that time, saying, ‘Hear the issues between your brethren; and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the Gentile that is with him. ^1:17You shall not respect persons in judgment, but you shall hear the small as well as the great. You shall not be afraid of the face of man: for the judgment is God's.

And the cause that is too hard for you, bring it to me; and I will hear it.’

^1:18And I commanded you at that time all the things that you should do.

§Complement   Body: Jehovah sent the children of Israel to possess the land of Canaan (1:19 - 31)

^1:19And when we left Horeb, we went through all that great and dreadful wilderness, which you saw by the way of the mountain of the Amorites, as Jehovah our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea. ^1:20And I said to you, ‘You have come to the mountain of the Amorites, which Jehovah our God is giving to us. ^1:21Behold, Jehovah your God has set the land before you. Go up and possess it, as Jehovah God of your fathers has said to you. Fear not; neither be discouraged.’

^1:22And you came near to me every one of you; and you said, ‘We will send men before us; and they shall search us out the land, and bring us word again by what way we must go up, and into what cities we shall come.’ ^1:23And the saying pleased me well; and I took twelve men of you, one of a tribe.

^1:24And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came to the valley of Eshcol, and searched it out. ^1:25And they took some of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down to us, and brought us word again, and said, ‘It is a good land that Jehovah our God is giving us.’

^1:26Notwithstanding you would not go up, but rebelled against the command of Jehovah your God. ^1:27And you murmured in your tents, and said, ‘Because Jehovah hated us, he has brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us. ^1:28Where shall we go up? Our brethren have discouraged our hearts, saying, ‘The people are greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there.’’

^1:29Then I said to you, ‘Do not dread; neither be afraid of them. ^1:30Jehovah your God who goes before you, he shall fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes; ^1:31and in the wilderness, where you have seen how that Jehovah your God carried you, as a man carries his son, in all the way that you went, until you came into this place.’

^1:32Yet in this thing you did not believe Jehovah your God, ^1:33who went in the way before you, to search out a place for you to pitch your tent, in fire by night to show you by what way you should go, and in a cloud by day.

^1:34And Jehovah heard the voice of your words; and he was furious, and he swore, saying, ^1:35‘Surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see that good land, which I swore to give to your fathers; ^1:36except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, he shall see it; and to him will I give the land that he has walked upon, and to his children, because he has wholly followed Jehovah.’

^1:37Also Jehovah was angry with me for your sakes, saying, ‘You also shall not go in there.

^1:38But Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, he shall go in there. Encourage him: for he shall cause Israel to inherit it. ^1:39Moreover your little ones, who you said should be a prey, and your children, who in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in there. And I will give it to them; and they shall possess it.

^1:40But as for you, turn and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.’

¶Complement   Jehovah refused to bless Israel as they tried to possess the land of Canaan against his will (1:41 - 46)

^1:41Then you answered and said to me, ‘We have sinned against Jehovah; we will go up and fight, according to all that Jehovah our God commanded us.’ And when every man of you had girded on his weapons of war, you were ready to go up into the hill.

^1:42And Jehovah said to me, ‘Say to them, ‘Do not go up; neither fight: for I am not among you, lest you are smitten before your enemies.’’

^1:43So I spoke to you; and you would not listen, but you rebelled against the command of Jehovah, and presumptuously went up into the hill. ^1:44And the Amorites, who dwelt in that mountain, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and destroyed you in Seir, even unto Hormah.

^1:45And you returned, and wept before Jehovah; but Jehovah would not give heed to your voice, nor listen to you.

^1:46So you stayed in Kadesh many days, according to the days that you stayed there.

^1:1Éstas son las palabras que habló Moisés a todo Israel a este lado del Jordán en el desierto, en la llanura frente al Mar Rojo, entre Parán, y Tofel, y Labán, y Haserot y Dizahab ^1:2(hay once días de viaje desde Horeb, por el camino del monte Seir a Cades-barnea).

^1:3Y aconteció que a los cuarenta años, en el mes undécimo, al primer día del mes, Moisés habló a los hijos de Israel conforme a todas las cosas que Jehová le había mandado acerca de ellos;

^1:4después que hirió a Sehón rey de los amorreos, que habitaba en Hesbón, y a Og rey de Basán, que habitaba en Astarot en Edrei.

^1:5En este lado del Jordán, en tierra de Moab, comenzó Moisés a declarar esta Ley, diciendo, ^1:6“Jehová nuestro Dios nos habló en Horeb, diciendo, ‘Bastante tiempo habéis estado en este monte. ^1:7Volveos, e id al monte del amorreo, y a todas sus comarcas, en el llano, en el monte, en los valles, en el sur, en la costa del mar, en la tierra del cananeo y el Líbano, hasta el gran río, el río Éufrates.

^1:8Mirad, yo he puesto la tierra delante de ustedes; entrad y poseed la tierra que Jehová juró a vuestros padres Abraham, Isaac y Jacob, que les daría a ellos y a su simiente después de ellos’.

^1:9Y yo os hablé entonces, diciendo, ‘Yo solo no puedo llevaros. ^1:10Jehová vuestro Dios os ha multiplicado, y he aquí hoy ustedes sois como las estrellas del cielo en multitud. ^1:11¡Jehová el Dios de vuestros padres os haga mil veces más de lo que sois, y os bendiga, como os ha prometido! ^1:12¿Cómo llevaré yo solo vuestras molestias, vuestras cargas y vuestros pleitos? ^1:13Dadme de entre ustedes, de vuestras tribus, varones sabios y entendidos y expertos, para que yo los ponga por vuestros jefes’. ^1:14Y me respondisteis, y dijisteis, ‘Bueno es hacer lo que has dicho’.

^1:15Y tomé los principales de vuestras tribus, varones sabios y expertos, y los puse por jefes sobre ustedes, jefes de millares, y jefes de cientos, y jefes de cincuenta, y jefes de diez, y oficiales entre vuestras tribus.

^1:16Y entonces mandé a vuestros jueces, diciendo, ‘Oíd las querellas entre vuestros hermanos, y juzgad justamente entre el hombre y su hermano, y el extranjero que está con él. ^1:17No hagáis acepción de personas en el juicio; así al pequeño como al grande oiréis: No tendréis temor del hombre: porque el juicio es de Dios.

Y el caso que os fuere difícil, lo traeréis a mí, y yo lo oiré.

^1:18Os mandé, pues, en aquel tiempo todo lo que habíais de hacer.

§El complemento   Cuerpo: Jehová envió a los hijos de Israel a poseer la tierra de Canaán (1:19 - 31)

^1:19Y habiendo salido de Horeb, anduvimos todo aquel grande y terrible desierto que habéis visto, por el camino del monte del amorreo, como Jehová nuestro Dios nos lo mandó; y llegamos hasta Cades-barnea. ^1:20Entonces os dije, ‘Habéis llegado al monte del amorreo, el cual Jehová nuestro Dios nos da. ^1:21Mira, Jehová tu Dios ha puesto la tierra delante de ti; sube y poséela, como Jehová el Dios de tus padres te ha dicho; no temas ni desmayes’.

^1:22Y os acercasteis a mí todos ustedes, y dijisteis, ‘Enviemos varones delante de nosotros, que nos reconozcan la tierra y nos traigan de vuelta razón del camino por donde hemos de subir, y de las ciudades adonde hemos de llegar’. ^1:23Y el dicho me pareció bien; y tomé doce varones de ustedes, un varón por tribu.

^1:24Y se encaminaron, y subieron al monte, y llegaron hasta el valle de Escol, y reconocieron la tierra. ^1:25Y tomaron en sus manos del fruto del país, y nos lo trajeron, y nos dieron cuenta, y dijeron, ‘Es buena la tierra que Jehová nuestro Dios nos da’.

^1:26Sin embargo, no quisisteis subir, antes fuisteis rebeldes al mandato de Jehová vuestro Dios; ^1:27y murmurasteis en vuestras tiendas, diciendo, ‘Porque Jehová nos aborrece, nos ha sacado de la tierra de Egipto, para entregarnos en manos del amorreo y destruirnos. ^1:28¿A dónde subiremos? Nuestros hermanos han hecho desfallecer nuestro corazón, diciendo, ‘Este pueblo es mayor y más alto que nosotros, las ciudades grandes y amuralladas hasta el cielo; y también vimos allí hijos de nephilim’’.

^1:29Entonces os dije, ‘No temáis, ni tengáis miedo de ellos. ^1:30Jehová vuestro Dios, el cual va delante de ustedes, él peleará por ustedes, conforme a todas las cosas que hizo por ustedes en Egipto delante de vuestros ojos; ^1:31y en el desierto has visto que Jehová tu Dios te ha traído, como trae el hombre a su hijo, por todo el camino que habéis andado, hasta llegar a este lugar’.

§El complemento   Conclusión: Los hijos de Israel perdieron la bendición de Jehová sobre ellos por su negativa a obedecerle (1:32 - 46)

¶El complemento   Jehová fue enojó tanto con Israel y con Moisés (1:32 - 40)

^1:32Y aun con esto no creísteis a Jehová vuestro Dios, ^1:33quien iba delante de ustedes por el camino, para buscaros el lugar donde habíais de acampar, con fuego de noche para mostraros el camino por donde debíais andar, y con nube de día.

^1:34Y oyó Jehová la voz de vuestras palabras, y se enojó, y juró diciendo, ^1:35‘Ciertamente ninguno de los hombres, de esta mala generación, verá la buena tierra que juré daría a vuestros padres, ^1:36excepto Caleb hijo de Jefone; él la verá, y a él le daré la tierra que ha pisado, y a sus hijos: porque él ha seguido fielmente a Jehová’.

^1:37También contra mí se enojó Jehová por causa de ustedes, y me dijo, ‘Tampoco tú entrarás allá.

^1:38Josué hijo de Nun, que está delante de ti, él entrará allá: anímale: porque él la hará heredar a Israel. ^1:39Además vuestros chiquitos, de los cuales dijisteis serían por presa, y vuestros hijos que en aquel tiempo no sabían entre el bien y mal, ellos entrarán allá, y a ellos la daré, y ellos la poseerán.

^1:40Pero ustedes volveos, e id al desierto, camino del Mar Rojo’.

¶El complemento   Jehová negó a bendecir a Israel como ellos trataron de poseer la tierra de Canaán contra su voluntad (1:41 - 46)

^1:41Entonces respondisteis y me dijisteis, ‘Hemos pecado contra Jehová; nosotros subiremos y pelearemos, conforme a todo lo que Jehová nuestro Dios nos ha mandado’. Y os armasteis cada uno de sus armas de guerra, y os apercibisteis para subir al monte.

^1:42Y Jehová me dijo, ‘Diles, ‘No subáis, ni peleéis, pues no estoy entre ustedes; para que no seáis vencidos delante de vuestros enemigos’.’

^1:43Y os hablé, y no quisisteis oír; antes fuisteis rebeldes al mandamiento de Jehová, y persistiendo con altivez subisteis al monte. ^1:44Y los amorreos que habitaban en aquel monte salieron a vuestro encuentro, y os persiguieron como lo hacen las avispas, y os derrotaron en Seir, hasta Horma.

^1:45Y volvisteis, y llorasteis delante de Jehová; pero Jehová no escuchó vuestra voz, ni os prestó oído.

^1:46Y estuvisteis en Cades por muchos días, de acuerdo a los días que habéis estado allí.
