C Book 1.4: The Mouth of the Righteous and the Wicked

C Part 1: The Mouth of the Righteous

O Chapter 1.1: How long shall my enemy be exalted over me? (Psalm 13)

U How long will you forget me, O Jehovah: forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?

C Consider and hear me, O Jehovah my God.

C Enlighten my eyes, lest I sleep in death; lest my enemy says, I have prevailed against him; and those that trouble me rejoice when I am moved.

O But I have trusted in your mercy; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.

O I will sing to Jehovah, because he has dealt bountifully with me.

O Chapter 1.2: Let my enemies be ashamed and disgraced (Psalm 70)

O Hurry, O God, to deliver me; make haste to help me, O Jehovah. Let them be ashamed and disgraced that seek after my soul. Let them be turned backward and put to confusion that desire my harm. Let them be turned back for a reward of their shame, who say, Aha, aha.

O But let all those that seek you rejoice and be glad in you. And let such as love your salvation say continually, Let God be magnified.

C But I am poor and needy; make haste to me.

C O God, you are my help and my deliverer.

U O Jehovah, make no delay.

C Chapter 1.3: Deliver me from my persecutors (Psalm 142)

U Introduction

U I cried to Jehovah with my voice; with my voice I made my supplication to Jehovah.

C I poured out my complaint before him;

C I showed before him my trouble.

C Body

U When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then you knew my path.

C In the way wherein I walked have they secretly laid a snare for me.

C I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but no man would know me; refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.

O I cried to you, O Jehovah; I said, You are my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.

O Attend to my cry: for I am brought very low.

C Conclusion

C Deliver me from my persecutors: for they are stronger than I.

C Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise your Name.

U The righteous shall surround me: for you shall deal bountifully with me.

C Chapter 1.4: Deliver me from the workers of iniquity (Psalm 59)

U Introduction

U Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; defend me from them that rise up against me. Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloody men.

C For, see, they lie in wait for my soul; the mighty are gathered against me, but not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O Jehovah.

C They run and prepare themselves without my fault; awake to help me, and behold.

C Body

U Therefore, O Jehovah God of hosts, the God of Israel, awake to visit all the heathen; be not merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah.

C They return at evening; they make a sound like a dog, and go around the city. Behold, they pour out profanity with their mouth; swords are in their lips: for they say, Who hears us?

C But you, O Jehovah, shall laugh at them; you shall have all the heathen in derision. Because of his strength will I wait upon you: for God is my defense. The God of my mercy shall go before me; God shall let me look upon the destruction of my enemies.

O Slay them not, lest my people forget; scatter them by your power, and bring them down, O Lord our shield. For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips, let them even be taken in their pride; and for cursing and lying which they speak.

O Consume them in wrath, consume them, that they may not be! And let them know that God rules in Jacob to the ends of the earth. Selah. And at evening let them return, and let them make a sound like a dog, and go around the city. Let them wander up and down for food, and grudge if they are not satisfied.

C Conclusion

C But I will sing of your power.

C Yea, I will sing aloud of your mercy in the morning: for you have been my defense and refuge in the day of my trouble.

U To you, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defense, and the God of my mercy.

U Chapter 1.5: Deliver me from my oppressors (Psalm 56)

U Introduction

U Be merciful to me, O God: for man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresses me. My enemies would daily swallow me up: for there are many that fight against me, O you most High.

C When I am afraid, I will trust in you.

C In God will I praise his Word. I have put my trust in God; therefore I will not fear what flesh can do to me.

C Body

O Every day they twist my words; all their thoughts are against me for evil. They gather themselves together; they hide themselves; they mark my steps, when they wait for my soul.

O Shall they escape by iniquity? In your anger cast down the people, O God.

C You count my wanderings; put my tears into your bottle. Are they not in your Book?

C When I cry unto you, then shall my enemies turn back. I know this, because God is for me.

U In God will I praise his Word; in Jehovah will I praise his Word. I have put my trust in God; therefore I will not fear what man can do to me.

C Conclusion

C Your vows are upon me, O God;

C I will render praises to you: for you have delivered my soul from death.

U Will you not deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?

C Part 2: The Mouth of the Wicked

O Chapter 2.1: The false tongue shall be pierced by sharp arrows (Psalm 120)

U In my distress I cried to Jehovah; and he heard me: Deliver my soul, O Jehovah, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue.

C What shall be given to you? Or what shall be done to you, you false tongue?

C Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of the broom tree.

O Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar!

O My soul has long dwelt with him that hates peace. I am for peace; but when I speak, they are for war.

O Chapter 2.2: God shall shoot at the wicked with an arrow (Psalm 64)

O Hear my voice, O God, in my prayer.

O Preserve my life from fear of the enemy. Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked, from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity, who sharpen their tongue like a sword, and bend their bow to shoot their arrows, even bitter words, that they may shoot in secret at the blameless; suddenly do they shoot at him, and are not afraid. They encourage themselves in an evil matter; they commune of laying snares secretly; they say, Who shall see them? They devise wicked things. They accomplish a diligent search; both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, is deep.

C But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded. So shall they make their own tongue to fall upon themselves.

C All that see them shall flee away; and all men shall fear, and shall declare the work of God: for they shall wisely consider of his doing.

U The righteous shall be glad in Jehovah, and shall trust in him; and all the upright in heart shall glory.

C Chapter 2.3: The tongue of the wicked is like a sharp razor (Psalm 52)

U Introduction

U Why do you boast yourself in mischief, O mighty man? The goodness of God endures continually.

C Your tongue devises mischief, like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.

C You love evil more than good, and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah.

C Body

U You love all devouring words, O you deceitful tongue.

C God shall likewise destroy you forever.

C He shall take you away, and pluck you out of your dwelling place, and root you out of the land of the living. Selah.

O The righteous also shall see, and fear.

O And they shall laugh at him, saying, See, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.

C Conclusion

C But I am like a green olive tree in the House of God; I trust in the mercy of God forever and ever.

C I will praise you forever, because you have done it.

U And I will wait on your Name: for it is good before your saints.

C Chapter 2.4: The tongue of the violent is like a serpent (Psalm 140)

U Introduction

U Deliver me, O Jehovah, from the evil man; preserve me from the violent man, who imagine mischief in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war. They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders poison is under their lips. Selah.

C Protect me, O Jehovah, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man, who have purposed to overthrow my goings.

C The proud have hidden a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set traps for me. Selah.

C Body

U I said to Jehovah, You are my God.

C Hear the voice of my supplications, O Jehovah.

C O Lord Jehovah, the strength of my salvation, you have covered my head in the day of battle.

O Grant not, O Jehovah, the desires of the wicked; further not his wicked device, lest they exalt themselves. Selah.

O As for the head of those that surround me, let the mischief of their own lips cover them. Let burning coals fall upon them; let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again. Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth; evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.

C Conclusion

C I know that Jehovah will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor.

C Surely the righteous shall give thanks to your Name.

U The upright shall dwell in your presence.

U Chapter 2.5: The mouth of the wicked is like a roaring lion (Psalm 57)

U Introduction

U Be merciful to me, O God; be merciful to me: for my soul trusts in you; moreover, in the shadow of your wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities have passed over.

C I will cry unto God most high: unto God that performs all things for me.

C He shall send from Heaven, and save me from the reproach of him that would swallow me up. Selah. God shall send forth his mercy and his truth.

C Body

O My soul is among lions; and I lie among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are like spears and arrows, and their tongue as a sharp sword.

O Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be above all the earth.

C They have prepared a net for my steps.

C My soul is bowed down.

U They have dug a pit before me, into the midst whereof they have fallen themselves. Selah.

C Conclusion

C My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed; I will sing and give praise. Awake up, my glory; awake, psaltery and harp; I myself will awake early.

C I will praise you, O Lord, among the people; I will sing to you among the nations: for your mercy is great to the heavens, and your truth to the clouds.

U Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be above all the earth.
