C Book 1.3: The Character of the Righteous and the Wicked

C Part 1: The Character of the Righteous

U Chapter 1.1: The Ideal of the Righteous Man (Psalm 112)

Part 1: The fear of Jehovah imparts inward goodness to the Believer

C: His seed shall be mighty upon Earth, because he fears Jehovah

U Praise Jehovah!

C Blessed is the man that fears Jehovah, that delights greatly in his Commandments.

C His seed shall be mighty upon earth.

C: His household shall be blessed, because he fears Jehovah

U The generation of the upright shall be blessed.

C Wealth and riches shall be in his house.

C And his righteousness endures forever.

U: The fear of Jehovah makes him a good man

O To the upright there arises light in the darkness.

O He is gracious, full of compassion, and righteous.

C A good man shows favor, and lends.

C He will guide his affairs with discretion.

U Surely he shall not be moved forever.

Part 2: The righteous man reflects the goodness of God from his heart to others

U: His heart is steadfast and established in the face of his enemies

O The righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance.

O He shall not be afraid of evil news.

C His heart is steadfast, trusting in Jehovah.

C His heart is established.

U He shall not be afraid, until he looks upon the destruction of his enemies.

C: He shall be honored for his righteous works

U He has dispersed; he has given to the poor.

C His righteousness endures forever.

C His horn shall be exalted with honor.

C: The wicked shall see his righteous works and be grieved

U The wicked shall see it, and be grieved.

C He shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away.

C The desire of the wicked shall perish.

C Chapter 1.2: The righteous man vs. the Evil-doer (Psalm 37)

Part 1: The evil-doers will perish, but you shall be blessed if you trust in Jehovah

C: Trust in Jehovah and dont concern yourself with evil-doers

U Fret not yourself because of evil-doers; neither be envious against the workers of iniquity: for they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.

C Trust in Jehovah, and do good; dwell in the land, and truly you shall be fed. Delight yourself also in Jehovah; and he shall give you the desires of your heart.

C Commit your way to Jehovah; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. And he shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your judgment as the noonday.

C: Evil-doers shall be cut off, but those that wait upon Jehovah shall inherit the land

U Rest in Jehovah, and wait patiently for him; do not fret yourself because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked devices to pass.

C Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; do not fret yourself in any manner to do evil: for evil-doers shall be cut off; but those that wait upon Jehovah, they shall inherit the land.

C For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be; moreover, you shall diligently consider his place, and it shall not be; but the meek shall inherit the land, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

U: The wicked want to slay the just, but they shall perish

O The wicked plots against the just, and gnashes upon him with his teeth. The Lord shall laugh at him: for he sees that his day is coming.

O The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as are of upright conduct. Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken.

C A little that a righteous man has is better than the riches of many wicked: for the arms of the wicked shall be broken; but Jehovah upholds the righteous.

C Jehovah knows the days of the upright; and their inheritance shall be forever. They shall not be ashamed in the evil time, and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.

U But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of Jehovah shall be as the fat of lambs; they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.

Part 2: Jehovah will bless you if you trust in Him

U: Do good, because Jehovah will not forsake his saints

O The wicked borrows, and does not repay; but the righteous shows mercy, and gives: for those who are blessed of him shall inherit the land; and they that are cursed of him shall be cut off.

O The steps of a righteous man are ordered by Jehovah; and he delights in his way. Though he falls, he shall not be utterly cast down, because Jehovah upholds him with his hand.

C I have been young, and now am old, yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. He is always merciful, and lends; and his seed is blessed.

C Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell forevermore: for Jehovah loves judgment, and does not forsake his saints; they are preserved forever, but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.

U The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein forever.

C: Jehovah will protect the righteous from the wicked

U The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom, and his tongue talks of judgment. The Law of his God is in his heart; therefore none of his steps shall slide.

C The wicked watches the righteous, and seeks to slay him. Jehovah will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged.

C Wait on Jehovah, and keep his way, and he shall exalt you to inherit the land; when the wicked are cut off, you shall see it.

C: Jehovah will deliver the righteous from the wicked

U I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree. Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was gone; moreover, I sought him, but he could not be found.

C Mark the blameless man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace. But the transgressors shall be destroyed together; the end of the wicked shall be cut off.

C But the salvation of the righteous is of Jehovah; he is their strength in the time of trouble. And Jehovah shall help them and deliver them; he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.

C Chapter 1.3: The Righteous Man vs. Troubles and Afflictions (Psalm 34)

Part 1: Jehovah delivered the righteous man out of his troubles

C: The righteous man praises Jehovah at all times

U I will bless Jehovah at all times; his praise shall be continually in my mouth.

C My soul shall make her boast in Jehovah; the humble shall hear this, and be glad.

C O magnify Jehovah with me, and let us exalt his Name together.

C: The righteous man sought Jehovah and was delivered

U I sought Jehovah; and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

C They looked to him, and were enlightened;

C and their faces were not ashamed.

U: Blessed in the man that trusts and fears Jehovah

O This poor man cried; and Jehovah heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.

O The angel of Jehovah camps round about them that fear him, and delivers them.

C O taste and see that Jehovah is good; blessed is the man that trusts in him.

C O fear Jehovah, you his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him.

U The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger; but they that seek Jehovah shall not want any good thing.

Part 2: Jehovah hears the prayer of the righteous, but is against the evil-doer

U: The fear of Jehovah gives long life and good things

O Come, you children, listen to me, and I will teach you the fear of Jehovah.

O What man is he that desires life, and loves many days, that he may see good?

C Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking guile.

C Depart from evil, and do good. Seek peace, and pursue it.

U For the eyes of Jehovah are upon the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry.

C: The face of the LORD is against the evil-doer, but near the righteous

U The face of Jehovah is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

C The righteous cry, and Jehovah hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles.

C Jehovah is near to them who have a broken heart; and delivers those who have a contrite spirit.

C: The righteous suffers affliction, but the LORD redeems their soul

U Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but Jehovah delivers him out of them all. He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken.

C Evil shall slay the wicked, and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate.

C But Jehovah redeems the soul of his servants; and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.

O Chapter 1.4: Jehovah is the portion of the righteous man (Psalm 16)

U Preserve me, O God: for in you do I put my trust.

C O my soul, you have said to Jehovah, You are my Lord. My goodness does not extend to you, but to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.

C Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god; their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips.

O Jehovah is the portion of my inheritance and of my cup; you maintain my lot. The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; moreover, I have a wonderful inheritance.

O I will bless Jehovah, who has given me counsel; my reins also instruct me in the night seasons. I have set Jehovah always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; my flesh also shall rest in hope: for you will not leave my soul in Hell; neither will you allow your Holy One to see corruption. You will show me the path of Life; in your presence is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

O Chapter 1.5: The righteous man will bring forth fruit in old age (Psalm 92)

O It is good to give thanks to Jehovah, and to sing praises to your Name, O God most High; to show forth your lovingkindness in the morning, and your faithfulness every night, upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery, upon the harp with a solemn sound. For you, Jehovah, have made me glad through your work; I will triumph in the works of your hands.

O O Jehovah, how great are your works! And your thoughts are very deep. A stupid man does not know; neither does a fool understand this.

C When the wicked spring as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity flourish, it is only that they shall be destroyed forever. But you, Jehovah, are most High forevermore: for, lo, your enemies, O Jehovah: for, lo, your enemies shall perish; all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.

C But my horn shall you exalt like the horn of a wild ox; I shall be anointed with fresh oil. My eye also shall look upon the destruction of my enemies, and my ears shall hear the destruction of the wicked that rise up against me.

U The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree; he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those that are planted in the House of Jehovah shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall continue to bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing, to show that Jehovah is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

C Part 2: The Character of the Wicked

U Chapter 2.1: The wicked are liars from birth (Psalm 58)

U Introduction

U Do you indeed speak righteousness, O congregation? Do you judge uprightly, O you sons of men?

C Indeed, you work wickedness in your heart;

C you weigh the violence of your hands in the earth.

C Body

O The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies. Their poison is like the poison of a serpent; they are like the deaf adder that stops her ear, which will not listen to the voice of charmers, charming never so wisely.

O Break their teeth, O God, in their mouth; break out the great teeth of the young lions, O Jehovah.

C Let them melt away as water which runs continually.

C When he bends his bow to shoot his arrows, let them be as cut in pieces.

U As a snail which melts, let every one of them pass away; like the untimely birth of a woman, that they may not see the sun.

C Conclusion

C Before your pots can feel the thorns, he shall take them away as with a whirlwind, both living, and in his wrath.

C The righteous shall rejoice when he sees the vengeance; he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.

U So that a man shall say, Truly there is a reward for the righteous; truly he is a God that judges in the earth.

C Chapter 2.2: The wicked have set their eyes on the earth (Psalm 17)

U Introduction

U Hear the right, O Jehovah; attend to my cry; give ear to my prayer, that goes not out of deceitful lips.

C Let my sentence come forth from your presence. Let your eyes behold the things that are equal. You have tested my heart; you have visited me in the night; you have tested me, and shall find nothing; I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress. Concerning the words of men, by the Word of your lips I have kept myself from the paths of the destroyer.

C Hold up my goings in your paths, that my footsteps do not slip. I have called upon you: for you will hear me.

C Body

U O God, incline your ear to me, and hear my speech.

C Show your marvelous lovingkindness, O you that save by your right hand them who put their trust in you from those that rise up against them.

C Keep me as the apple of the eye; hide me under the shadow of your wings from the wicked that oppress me; from my deadly enemies, who surround me.

O They are enclosed in their own fat; with their mouth they speak proudly.

O They have now surrounded us in our steps; they have set their eyes bowing down to the earth, like a lion that is greedy of his prey, and as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.

C Conclusion

C Arise, O Jehovah; disappoint him; cast him down; deliver my soul from the wicked, who are your sword;

C from men who are your hand, O Jehovah; from men of the world, who have their portion in this life, and whose belly you fill with your hidden wrath; they are full of children, and leave the rest of their possessions to their young ones.

U As for me, I will behold your face in righteousness; I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with your likeness.

C Chapter 2.3: The wicked have set their eyes against the poor (Psalm 10)

U Introduction

U Why do you stand far away, O Jehovah? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?

C The wicked in his pride persecutes the poor; let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined.

C For the wicked boasts of his hearts desire, and blesses the covetous, whom Jehovah abhors.

C Body

U The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek God; all his thoughts are, There is no God. His ways are always grievous; your Judgments are far above out of his sight.

C As for all his enemies, he rails at them. He has said in his heart, I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity. His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and fraud; under his tongue is mischief and vanity.

C He sits in the lurking places of the villages; in the secret places he murders the innocent; his eyes are secretly set against the poor. He lays in wait secretly as a lion in his den; he lays in wait to catch the poor. He catches the poor, when he draws him into his net. He crouches, and humbles himself, that the poor may fall by his strong ones. He has said in his heart, God has forgotten; he hides his face; he will never see it.

O Arise, O Jehovah; O God, lift up your hand: forget not the humble.

O Why does the wicked scorn God? He has said in his heart, You will not require it. But you have seen it: for you behold mischief and spite, to repay it with your hand.

C Conclusion

C The poor commits himself to you. You are the helper of the fatherless. Break the arm of the wicked and the evil man; seek out his wickedness until you find none.

C Jehovah is King forever and ever; the heathen have perished out of his land.

U Jehovah, you have heard the desire of the humble; you will prepare their heart; you will cause your ear to hear: to judge the fatherless and the oppressed, so that the man of the earth may no longer oppress.

O Chapter 2.4: Jehovah will judge the wicked with fire and brimstone (Psalm 11)

U In Jehovah do I put my trust.

C Why do you say to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain? For, see, the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may secretly shoot at the upright in heart.

C If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?

O Jehovah is in his Holy Temple. Jehovahs throne is in Heaven. His eyes behold, his eyelids test, the children of men.

O Jehovah tests the righteous; but the wicked and him that loves violence his soul hates. Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and a horrible tempest; this shall be the portion of their cup. For the righteous Jehovah loves righteousness; his countenance beholds the upright.

O Chapter 2.5: The wicked do not fear Jehovah (Psalm 36)

O The transgression of the wicked says within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes: for he flatters himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity is found to be hateful. The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit; he has left off to be wise, and to do good. He devises mischief upon his bed; he sets himself in a way that is not good; he abhors not evil.

O Your mercy, O Jehovah, is in the heavens, and your faithfulness reaches unto the clouds. Your righteousness is like the great mountains; your Judgments are like a great ocean. O Jehovah, you preserve man and beast.

C How excellent is your lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of your wings. They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of your House; and you shall make them drink of the river of your pleasures. For with you is the fountain of Life; in your Light shall we see Light.

C O continue your lovingkindness to them that know you, and your righteousness to the upright in heart. Let not the foot of pride come against me, and let not the hand of the wicked remove me.

U The workers of iniquity have fallen there; they are cast down, and shall not be able to rise.
